Deployment Transition Center: Unwind, then go home Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Jordan Lazaro 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The Deployment Transition Center has helped more than 20,000 redeployers “return strong” since 2010. The program assists the transition from deployed environments back to home life, and provides critical reintegration skills and decompression opportunities for redeployers. The DTC recently surpassed 20,000 redeployers who have made this their first stop before returning home. Redeployers is a term used for members who are deployed to one location and will deploy to Ramstein prior to their return home. “Upon arrival redeployers have the opportunity to talk about their deployment. 3 AF, German community leaders stress cooperation in mayors’ forum by Staff Sgt. Christian Conrad American Forces Network Kaiserslautern Maj. Gen. Randall Reed, Third Air Force and Kaiserslautern Military Community commander, co-hosted a forum with local German mayors and community leaders May 6 in Krickenbach. The forum is a biannual conference during which local community leaders and U.S. military leadership can collaborate to the betterment of both their respective communities. This particular meeting was Reed’s last as the KMC commander. His two-year tenure in the position has been marked by a people-oriented focus in an effort to enhance cooperation between German communities and the U.S. service members they host. On the outset of his role, Reed endeavored to open up lines of communication with community leaders to the widest extent possible, even maintaining regular office hours in Kaiserslautern’s German-American Community Office, a previously-unheard of practice by a KMC commander. The widening of that aperture, Reed said, helped to ferry the larger Rheinland-Pfalz area through three once-in-a-lifetime crises: Operations Allies Refuge and Allies Welcome, the COVID-19

there was never a question as to whether our forces could go,” Reed said during the forum. “When the need arose, our forces were there from the start.” Although Reed acknowledged the challenges of accommodating an uptick in readiness exercises and troop movements, he credited the help from community leaders and the GACO’s role in facilitating coordination in keeping the crisis from evolving. “Our combined efforts made a difference in deterring additional aggression and kept it in a place where diplomacy could still work,” he said. With RLP being home to the largest concentration of Americans outside the U.S., the augmenting of communication has become an indispensable asset in not only managing the KMC’s behemoth footprint, but also leveraging it in helping the influx of Ukrainians who’ve recently sought refuge in the area, said Ralf Lessmeister, Kaiserslautern county
commissioner. “Approximately 30,000 Ukrainian refugees are here in Rheinland-Pfalz,” said Lessmeister. “We’ve seen huge support from our communities in taking them in. The U.S. military, too, has been in regular communication with us, which is crucial in handling this crisis together. Thanks to the continued talks and cooperation with General Reed, we’ve been able to handle the crisis and get the refugees the support they need.” In addition to speaking on developments in the Russia and Ukraine conflict, other topics discussed during the forum included updates on the COVID-19 pandemic, noise concerns and logistics related to the newly-announced construction of the Rhine Ordnance Barracks Medical Center, an almost $1 billion investment to replace the aging Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. With Reed’s time as the KMC commander coming to a close, though, the forum was tinged with
a certain wistfulness, with many in attendance voicing their appreciation for the work done by not only Reed, but KMC military leadership as a whole. “I’ve been here for 28 years and you didn’t just ask for our input — we felt that it truly mattered,” said Lessmeister. “Meeting regularly as we have, taking care of this relationship through so many crises and standing on the same side of the response has made a difference.” Reed, too, closed the forum with words of thanks for the work U.S. military leadership and community leaders did throughout his tenure and underscored the importance of the GACO — something he said his successor will continue to abundantly use. “If I can ask one favor of all of you, it’ll be to help the next KMC commander keep the momentum we’ve generated,” Reed said. “So our children and your children can understand that we are successful together.”

May 13, 2022 DTC from Page 1 Support Group Detachment 1 DTC program director. “The DTC also offers an excursion day where redeployers begin the reintegration process into non-deployed life followed by combat bridge.” Combat bridge creates a space for individuals to learn and relate to each other during the process of transitioning from deployment to arriving home. “We try to touch on the whole Airman concept: Mental, physical, social and spiritual fitness as pillars to talk about realistic expectations of reintegration,” said Rodriguez. “Recognizing how they are going to transition from deployed to home life is important because it allows individuals to understand their feelings are normal and the resources that are available.” The DTC program has evolved in the last decade to meet the changing demand of deployed members.
“Initially this program was designed for deployed military members who dealt with combat, but then research started showing individuals with non-combative deployments struggling upon coming home,” said Master Sgt. Antonie Alphabet, 86th MSG Det 1 senior enlisted leader. “After multiple deployments, and being away from family and normal life, non-combative deployers were experiencing some of the same stress reactions and negative outcomes.” Deployments affect everyone differently, but having a support group can make a big difference in the process, Alphabet said. “We are going to do what we can to get them back home in just as good, if not better, condition than they left, ” said Lt. Col. Kenneth Sterling, 86th MSG Det 1 commander. “When we connect them with resources that can help them at their home station, we’ve lowered the barriers to seeking
access for help.” The DTC is supported by 37 team members who come from different Air Force specialty codes and combine their knowledge and skills to better serve redeployers. “Thinking about going home can be overwhelming, so having an opportunity to relax and talk to people who went through the same things I was going through helped me,” said Senior Airman Demyrah Thomas, a redeployer participating in the DTC. “Talking to everyone and breaking down what we experienced was eye opening.” Along with bridging positive combat and homefront skill sets, the DTC works to improve deployed life as well. “We are a readiness program,” said Alphabet. “Our aim is to help them decompress and make improvements in all aspects of deployment readiness.” Currently they are working to expand the DTC and its ability to

The studio is now open in building 2102 and appointments can be made at https:// ramsteinstudio.setmore.com/. Passenger Terminal All restrictions on space-available (Space-A) travel have been lifted. In accordance with DOD Force Health Protection Guidance and the foreign clearance guide, all passengers traveling to the United States via Military Aircraft, age 2 and older, must receive a negative viral test (PCR or Antigen) within three calendar days of departure OR recovery letter within 3 months of positive test result and complete a Threat Health Declaration. All individuals, regardless of vaccination status, must wear a mask on DOD transportation assets and within DOD transportation hubs. Retiree Activities Office Your 86 AW/RAO maintains email addresses for over 1400 retirees and or surviving spouses located throughout the KMC footprint. Before the pandemic the email address elements were quite accurate, but for some reason many email addresses now are being rejected/ undeliverable. If you have been receiving email from the RAO that is good news; if not, you might want to send in your address to have it re-added to their data base. Send to 86aw.rao@us.af.mil. The RAO is also looking
for combat veterans who served during WWII, Korea or Vietnam. This information is for our demographics, the creation of a database, and a possible future event. Satellite Pharmacy at Kaiserslautern Military Community Center The Ramstein Clinic Satellite Pharmacy is now open from Tuesdays to Fridays from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturdays from 12 a.m.-4 p.m. Please note that the pharmacy will be closed every second Tuesday of the month and on federal holidays. The pharmacy provides an opportunity for beneficiaries to retrieve medications for those who have difficulty getting to the clinic during its operating hours. Registry of Motor Vehicles operating hours update The USAREUR-AF Registry of Motor Vehicles customer service desk located in building 216 on Sembach Kaserne is again open Fridays. Operating hours on Fridays are 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron The 86 VRS has established a base shuttle to support deployed/TDY individuals in support of current operations here in the KMC. The shuttle currently services work centers, QoL & lodging facilities on Ramstein Air Base, but has routes planned for lodging at both Kapaun and Landstuhl to be activated as required. Our simple QR code will take you to our current shuttle routes/times so we can remain flexible to changing requirements and keep the latest shuttle schedule posted for all customers. The event thanked military spouses and provided beneficial information from various commu-
nity partners and base organizations. “Military Spouse Appreciation Day is a way for us to give back to those who are not only behind the scenes, but help make our Air Force the best in the world,” said John Falkner, 86th Mission Support Group deputy director. “We want to thank these amazing people who keep the home front locked down so we can accomplish the mission.” To help thank spouses for what they do, agencies and mission partners set up tents where they offered

free food, games, prizes and fun for families. “We’re offering all sorts of activities for spouses and the whole family,” said Marcia James, 86th FSS AFRC Exceptional Family Member Program family support coordinator. “We wanted to give spouses and their family members a chance to come out and have fun. We have partners from all over the Kaiserslautern Military Community offering all sorts of goodies as well as helpful information to help spouses with things like opportunities and resources for education.”
Events like this give the community an opportunity to spread awareness to spouses on the programs that are available to them. “Our spouses embody the whole airman concept,” Falkner said. “They are part of our mission success. It’s our job to help them be aware of the resources available to them so they can continue to help our Air Force be better than it was yesterday.” Military Spouse Appreciation day provides more than free food and prizes, it provides an opportunity for the Air Force to high-
light how important our military spouses are. “When I get up in the morning to go to work, I leave everything behind to go do my job,” Falkner said. “Sometimes I take for granted everything my spouse does to keep the house running and takes care of everything else. Oftentimes, we get so busy we forget to just say ‘Thank you,’ for everything they do for us. This event is mainly here to show appreciation of everything they do for us and let them know the Air Force is here for them every step of the way.”

Since the mid 1750’s Otterberg has celebrated the Frühlingsfest every two years. It takes place on the square in front of the Abbey Church and in the festively decorated main street. At 6 a.m. on Sunday morning, residents are woken up by loud shots, which is the starting signal for Music Club “Harmonie” to walk through the streets and invite residents to join.
The highlight of the festival is the parade on Sunday at 2 p.m. with musicians and participants in historical costumes. The Spring Queen, riding in a decorated carriage drawn by black horses, and her court concludes the procession. Part of the festival, with food and beverage offerings, also takes place in a nearby forest area.

Airlifter runs toward greatness What to do when you encounter a wild boar

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Jared Lovett 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs A noncommissioned officer assigned to the 373rd Training Squadron was celebrated as Airlifter of the Week for his ability to train and inspire Airmen under difficult circumstances, April 21. Tech. Sgt. Ryley S. Jacobs, 373 TRS, Detachment 20 instructor supervisor, is responsible for leading a team of eight NCOs who teach 86th Maintenance Group Airmen the eight core career fields that fall under the 86 MXG. “He is our lead instructor,” said Master Sgt. Matthew Tempest, 373 TRS, DET 20 senior enlisted leader. “He’s in charge of ensuring that all
the other instructors are teaching to the high level of air education and training command.” In January there was a gap between the outgoing and incoming detachment SELs, leaving Jacobs to take the role of flight chief upon himself, while maintaining his own responsibilities. “Coming in as the new SEL, I was expecting the detachment to be running as if there was not a senior NCO in charge for the past four months,” said Tempest. “But he had everything under control.” When he’s not in uniform, Jacobs enjoys running to further his physical fitness. Jacobs, a Buena Vista, Colorado native, began his running journey in 2016 after learning he had
to pass his Physical Fitness Test to finally be able to be stationed overseas. “I wasn’t in the best of shape at the time,” Jacobs said. “I knew I had to make a change.” Jacobs barely passed his test and spent the next three years in England, where he found that running was his passion. Now, he runs approximately 50 miles per week and has competed in 10 Spartan Races. “I’ll be running my first marathon in a few days at St. Wendel,” Jacobs said. “This has been a dream of mine for a long time.” Jacobs is constantly looking for new ways to push his limits through training his body and preparing for the next race.
With so many forested areas within the Kaiserslautern Military Community, we must be aware of how to coexist with wild life. Wild boar call Germany home and they have been seen in the south areas of Ramstein AB, on Kapaun and in Vogelweh housing. Wild boar, also known as the wild swine or wild pig, have stocky, muscular bodies and the larger males can grow up to about five feet long and stand about 30 inches tall at shoulder height. They have short, coarse grey-brown hair and canine teeth which are larger and appear like tusks on males. Males also have a pronounced mane running along their spine. Wild boar are more likely to give you a wide berth if you cross paths, however there are some good practices that will help keep you and your companions safe while enjoying the many forests in Germany. 1. Keep your distance The best thing you can do if you spot a wild boar is simply to steer clear of it. If it doesn’t move out of the area, you should detour or turn back to give it plenty of space. Stay Away from piglets. Sows (female pigs) are protective and can be easily provoked when it comes to their piglets, therefore approaching piglets in the open is

extremely dangerous. Regardless of whether sows are within eyesight, it is very important to always stay away from piglets. 2. Secure your pets Wild boar don’t particularly love dogs and may feel threatened by your dog, so keep your dog on a leash and close to you. 3. Do not attempt to feed them It’s surprisingly common for people to attempt to feed wild boar, but remember, you should not approach them. Also, humans feeding wildlife is what draws them into urban areas and we want them to stay in the wild. 4. Back away slowly If you mistakenly find yourself close to a wild boar, stay calm, stay facing it and slowly back away. 5. Do not run As with so many wildlife encounters, though you may want to run with every cell in your body, this can trigger a chase response where only moments ago the boar wasn’t all that interested in you. 6. Find higher ground If a wild boar charges at you, you won’t have much time – these stocky beasts can move at 25 miles per hour. If possible, climb up a tree, a boulder or onto the roof of the car where their short legs won’t be able to reach you.

For military children — who know that their parents regularly train, prepare, and deploy for military missions as part of their job – current events can cause stress and anxiety. Streams of media images and reports about troubling news events can be outright scary. Talking to kids openly and honestly about the events they see and hear about can help validate their feelings and make them feel reassured that they are safe and loved, said Air Force Col. (Dr.) Eric Flake, a developmental behavioral pediatrician at Madigan Army Medical CenterMadigan Army Medical Center website on Joint Base LewisMcChord, in Washington. During these conversations, he recommends parents: • Keep it simple and honest • Validate their kids’ feelings • Express feelings about how the family might be impacted by what’s going on • Highlight the values and strengths that people demonstrate during hard times Flake highlighted the importance of military parents explaining to their children that the rea-
son for their military service is to protect children and make them feel safe. “Everyone, but especially children, like to feel safe and secure,” he said. “Reassurance is key.” An important part of that is reassuring children that feelings of anxiety are normal, the behavioral specialist said. Parents can help externalize or label feelings and remind children that adults get anxious, too. Children need to understand that it’s OK to feel scared or anxious. “It’s a healthy response, and we all feel it,” said Flake. “Having an emotional response and being sensitive to the suffering of others is healthy and should be supported, not turned off.” It also helps to provide children with the coping skills needed to “ride through” times when anxiety is particularly difficult to manage, he added. “Do healthy things to help bring down the anxiety levels, like eating healthy, exercising, and getting enough sleep,” he added. He recommends the following resources to ease kids’ anxiety: • Eat a meal together without distractions • Go on walks together and talk about things that interest the child • Talk about what is going at the level that the child understands • Develop a personal growth
mindset and teach children about this concept Military children face unique anxieties, even in the best of times, for example that their parents will be leaving for a deployment, or that their family will be moving, said Air Force Maj. (Dr.) Kara Garcia, a staff pediatrician at the 96th Medical Group96th Medical Group website in Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. “Leaving friends, schools, familiar parks, churches, and changing routines can be very disorienting for children,” she said. “It’s important as a parent to talk about the certainties and constants: that they are loved, that the adults around them are happy and healthy, that things will turn out OK in the end.” But if a parent feels that their child is excessively anxious, Flake recommends they make an appointment with their primary physician. “There is also 24/7 help anywhere in the world to address anxiety concerns via Military OneSourceMilitary OneSource website, including virtual counseling,” he said. PARIS from Page 1 you’ve tried the food and maybe even coveted the fashion, but nothing compares to walking the streets of Paris and experiencing Parisian life firsthand. Here are five key tips for your trip to the City of Lights. 1) Dress up a little Paris is one of the world’s greatest fashion capitals, so you’ll be hard pressed to find anyone walking around in sweats or yoga pants. You don’t have to wear a suit and tie or a fancy dress but if you make sure your clothes are “business casual,” or at least clean and not too baggy, you’ll definitely blend in. Blending in is always a good plan when you are travelling, as pickpockets and pushy salespeople are much more likely to pick you out of a crowd when your clothes make you stand out. 2) Wear comfortable shoes Yes, those high heels look fantastic! But Paris is a pedestrian city and you are going to want to explore. Leave the “pretty, but not at all practical” shoes at home and bring ones you’ve already broken in and can walk miles in. Your feet will thank you. 3) Yes… go see the Eiffel Tower, then take a hike I know… you’re in Paris. How can you NOT see the Eiffel Tower?! So go see it. Stand under it. Buy those expensive tickets to go up the elevator to the top if you really want (just to get a sense of how far the sprawl of Paris extends), but then leave the area and go explore the real Paris. Parisians have a love/hate relationship with the tower. Although it draws millions of tourists and is the city’s most visual icon, it also stands in stark contrast to the historic provincial French architecture that makes up the rest of Paris.

The restaurants and stores around the tower are there for tourists, so prices are steep and the experience is less than authentic. Head a few streets away from the tower and main tourist attractions and you’ll start to enjoy the Paris that its citizens adore. 4) Don’t be afraid, but do be polite Scenario #1: You’re standing at a busy intersection in Paris. People and cars are whizzing by. You want to know which way to go to find the Louvre or Eiffel Tower, so you stop someone as they are walking by and ask them where it is. They brush you off and walk away. You think “How rude!” and let it affect the rest of your trip. Let’s take this scenario as seen from
the Parisian’s point of view: You live in Paris and are on your way to or from work when a tourist steps right in your path and asks you, in a foreign language, for directions. Your English isn’t great and you are in a hurry, so you politely say “no, sorry” and walk away. This happens to you almost every week, because there are TONS of tourists wandering around, lost, in Paris and you are just trying to get to work or to meet friends for dinner. So remember, you can do it — you can navigate by yourself! Instead of driving people nuts, you can easily make your way around Paris with a Metro (subway) map, a street map, and a humble attitude. If you are really lost, take half an hour to sit down in a

cafe and study your map, or ask your waiter for directions or a street name. The Metro is a great way to get your bearings, since the stops are on almost every major street and can help you figure out which direction you are headed, no matter where you find yourself in the city. 5) Eat Seriously: Eat everything you find. Eat your way through Paris. Have breakfast at a bakery or cafe, grab lunch at another and then sit down for dinner anywhere you find more Parisians than tourists milling about. You don’t have to go to the most expensive restaurants to get a taste of Paris. If you are on a budget, make lunch your biggest meal of the day, or grab a sandwich at a bakery and picnic in a park. Parisians love their food and you will too!
