by U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa Public Affairs U.S. Air Force Gen. Jeff L. Harrigian took command of both U.S. Air Forces in Europe - Air Forces Africa and NATO Allied Air Command from Gen. Tod D. Wolters during a ceremony at Ramstein Air Base, May 1. As the new commander of USAFEAFAFRICA, Harrigian is responsible for the full spectrum of Air Force war-fighting capabilities supporting two combatant commands, which possess more than one-fifth of the world’s population. “Our NATO Alliance, the oldest and most successful in history, relies on U.S. European Command and U.S.
Africa Command to preserve peace and stability in these challenging times. … In many ways your commands represent hope during troubled times, just as they always have,” said U.S. Air Force Gen. David L. Goldfein, Chief of Staff of the Air Force. Wolters is slated to become commander of European Command and Supreme Allied Commander Europe, succeeding U.S. Army Gen. Curtis M. Scaparrotti. “Under (Wolter’s) leadership, 37,000 total force and civilian Airmen came together as a clenched fist – lethal, agile, highly respected, and always ready. With our partners they trained to be an interoperable and inseparable combined team,” said Goldfein. “We
arm our diplomats with executable military options so they can negotiate from a position of strength and make the world a better place for our children and for our grandchildren. We bring hope. It’s our calling.” “When it came time to pick the next commander to continue the legacy, Gen. Jeff “Cobra” Harrigian, was the obvious choice. He brings the perfect blend of operational expertise and proven combat leadership to take this team to new heights. … Cobra is a combatproven leader I admire,” said Goldfein. With nearly 34 years of service following graduation from the U.S. Air Force Academy, Harrigian brings with him the breadth and depth of experiences of a combat fighter pilot with
more than 4,000 flying hours, having flown combat missions in support of Operation Just Cause, Operation Desert Storm and Operation Inherent Resolve. During his remarks, Scaparrotti commended Harrigian’s qualifications for command. “After having worked with (Harrigian) over the past eight months, I can attest that he’s the right combination of knowledge, experience, and strategic vision for this job,” he said. 86 AW all-call: Recapping past, future objectives
U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Mark R. August, 86th Airlift Wing commander, speaks to a group of Airmen at an all-call on Ramstein Air Base, April 26. During the all-call August outlined his future goals for the wing.
by Senior Airman Milton Hamilton 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Airlift Wing leadership held an all-call at the Southside fitness center on Ramstein Air Base, April 27. During the all-call Brig. Gen. Mark August, 86th AW commander, outlined a few of his goals for the wing, which included resilience, balancing peacetime operations with combat readiness and lethality, training tomorrow’s leaders for contingency operations today, and continuing to earn recognition as the “World’s Best Wing.” August said there is a tremendous opportunity living overseas to influence an entire theatre by partnering with allies. “One of the great initiatives from the operations group, is to team up with our North Atlantic Treaty Organization partners,” said August. “They have access to range, landing zones, drop zones, facilities, and we have the expertise they want. That seems like a pretty fair trade to me.”
Though during the allcall the 86th AW leadership focused on the wings’ mission capabilities and readiness, they were also concerned with the morale and well-being of the Airmen and their families. Chief Master Sgt. Ernesto Rendon, 86th AW command chief, emphasized the wing’s involvement with Wounded Warrior Care events and the wing’s leadership priorities for mental health. “Last time when we talked about resiliency, I talked about mental health,” said Rendon. “We’ve teamed up with the U.S.
Air Force wounded warriors, who are scheduled to hold a Wounded Warrior Care event. This team is going to bring service members who suffer from things such as traumatic brain injuries or post-traumatic stress disorder. This event will give all of us an opportunity to see in action, what resiliency looks like in some of the toughest situations.” In addition to his focusing on mental health, Rendon also spoke about bettering the lives of Airmen and their families who live and work on Ramstein.

Rendon highlighted several suggestions that are being considered after receiving feedback from Airmen and their dependents, such as having basewide wifi, 24/7 access to the Southside gym, and repainting of the lines in the parking lot to allow more visibility when parking. Additionally, Rendon spoke about the 86th AW leadership investing in innovative ideas created by Airmen. “We enabled folks who are right on the front lines of doing the job, to tell us how they can do it better,” said Rendon. “We

allocated 675,000 dollars from our innovation funds to support 14 ideas that would help you do your job safer, faster, and more efficient.” The leaders prepared Airmen for the second iteration of exercise Operation Varsity, and discussed the lessons learned from the prior exercise. Rendon said it was neat to see Airmen respond well to the different challenges thrown at them and be able to effectively do their jobs. “The goal of these exercises is to ensure that we’re able to respond in time to a major crisis,” said Rendon. August concluded by encouraging Airmen to prepare themselves mentally for exercise Operation Varsity 19-02 and challenged all Airmen to be a lead during the exercise. “I care about an organization that is ready, trained and equipped for combat operations,” said August. August said there will be enough scenarios to give everyone an opportunity to solve tactical problems and exercise war time skills.

it because we couldn’t secure that building. You have a piece of all those mission sets.” The Airlifter of the Week program recognizes Ramstein Airmen who, through their hard work and dedication, make the 86th AW the “World’s Best Wing.”

You are creating the next generation of leaders and people with a passion for the sport,” said August. There are approximately 2,000 players spread across 44 teams this spring season. “I want every player sometime today to turn around to the coaches and volunteers and say thank you,” said August.
“When you look across the stands and you see the people in 86th Force Support Squadron jerseys, please thank them too, while the coaches are working with all of you all the time, there are a lot people in the background working to find volunteers and umpires.” August encouraged the audience to enjoy each moment, be passionate about what the kids are doing, and have an amazing season, then threw out the opening pitch to kick off the season.

COMMENTARY Five Leadership Qualities … Do you have them?
by Tech. Sgt. J. Smith 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
Integrity, empowerment, managerial competence with excellent communication skills, compassion with sincere enthusiasm, and being a servant leader are five leadership qualities individuals should strive to possess. If you ask someone the definition of integrity you will probably receive an answer similar to this: “integrity is doing the right thing when no one is looking.” To me, integrity means that, but also so much more. Integrity is about trust, honesty as well as being unified with your organization. A friend once told me integrity also includes the responsibility to stand up and challenge substandard decisions being made. If a substandard decision is decided upon, it is then your responsibility to find answers for questions arising from that decision and it is your job as a leader, and follower to promote that vision to those around you and keep your personal feelings, and opinions out of it. The second quality is empowerment, this sometimes feels like a buzz word. In my mind, empowerment means providing your subordinates, peers and leaders with all
of the needed resources, tools, selfdetermination, and confidence necessary for them to be successful in any task whether it be personal or professional. The goal of empowering individuals around you, should be to make them the best versions of them-
having good working relationships with everyone, splitting work evenly and fairly, also ensuring you are allocating your personnel appropriately. Communication is essential up and down the chain of command in all organizations. Information should
Integrity, empowerment, managerial competence with excellent communication skills, compassion with sincere enthusiasm, and being a servant leader are five leadership qualities individuals should strive to possess.
selves. Each of them need to have the ability to make educated decisions not only for their careers, but their lives as well. Also, when individuals feel empowered they are usually more motivated and productive. Contrarily, if they feel powerless they will not feel valued and their work ethic, integrity and loyalty will drop. Managerial competence with excellent communication skills means managing your organization in a way that ensures the welfare of not only your customers but also your personnel. Being a good manager means
never stop flowing, and it should not get stuck with individuals who fail to pass it up or down. A solid communication strategy is vital to an organization’s success, it is what separates a good from a great organization. Communication is weaved throughout planning steps, relaying expectations as well as ensuring personnel are recognized for their achievements. Compassion with sincere enthusiasm shows workers that you, as a person and a leader, are invested in them and that you genuinely care about them. If you do not feel you are
strong in these areas, try to reframe your thoughts. Along with compassion with sincere enthusiasm comes emotional intelligence. It is a person’s ability to have awareness and control when they express their emotions. Essentially, someone who is emotionally intelligent handles all interpersonal relationships in a manner which brings credit upon themselves and their organization. Lastly, traditional leadership is when a leader’s focus is the prosperity of their organization. A servant leader is very different from a traditional leader. A servant leader shares power, puts the needs of the employees first, and helps their people develop and perform as highly as possible. In general, leadership starts with every one of us. Throughout history it has been shown that great leaders have been more interested in others’ success rather than their own, which is the basis of servant leadership. I challenge you to ask yourself if you possess these qualities. If you answered yes, it is your job to mentor those around you to assist them in acquiring these qualities as well. If you answered no, take some time to self-reflect and figure out your weaker areas and then set goals to strengthen those areas.

NEW COMMANDER from Page 1 missions with forward-based airpower and infrastructure to conduct and enable theater and global operations. U.S. Marine Corps Gen. Thomas D. Waldhauser, USAFRICOM commander, highlighted the accomplishments of the Airmen under Wolter’s leadership. “During General Wolters’ tenure, the men and women of Air Forces Africa overcame many challenges to strengthen partnerships, enhance partner capabilities, and provide enablers necessary to promote security, stability and prosperity on the African continent,” said Waldhauser. Harrigian, who served as the USAFE-AFAFRICA deputy commander for the past seven months, has witnessed, first-hand, the complex and diverse set of challenges in both the European and African theaters. “(Harrigian) brings an impressive resume of leadership, Airmanship, and the expertise to sustain American influ-
ence on the African continent while assisting our partners in strengthening their own airpower institutions to address crises on their own,” Waldhauser added. Harrigian is the 36th USAFEAFAFRICA commander since the Air Force became a separate service in 1947. In closing his remarks, Goldfein offered words of wisdom for the new commander. “At the end of the day, our job as commanders is to take our nation’s most lethal assets – our men and women in uniform like those in formation today, and mold them, train them, pair them with the best technology on the planet to make the world a better place,” Goldfein said. Harrigian ended the ceremony with brief remarks to his new commands. “I am committed to giving you my all. I am fired up to work with each and every one of you. This is our opportunity to make a difference and a chance to put our stamp on history… Let’s get after it.”

2019 Ramstein Bazaar food vendor selection opens May 16 by 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Preparations for the 55th annual Ramstein Bazaar have already begun. Mark your calendars for Sept. 12 to 15. Beginning on May 16 at 6 p.m. , the Ramstein Bazaar Committee will be accepting online applications from private organizations that would like to be Food Vendors for the 2019 Bazaar. Private organizations that are chosen will cook and sell their choice of food items for four days on the flightline to thousands of Bazaar visitors. Each private organization keeps 100 percent of their profits to benefit their group. As this is an 86th Force Support Squadron event that is produced by the Ramstein Officers’ Spouses Club, all business must be authorized with
86th FSS. Registered private organizations which have not already used their three quarterly fundraisers are eligible to apply for a food vendor spot. If you are unsure whether you qualify, contact the 86th FSS Private Organization Office. Private organizations that are registered with 86th FSS will receive an informational email detailing how to access the online application. Please ensure 86th FSS has up-to-date contact information for your organization so you do not miss this great fundraising opportunity. Before applying, the Ramstein Bazaar Committee recommends organizations are prepared with: • Non-military phone numbers and email addresses for two points of contact (one POC must be a first
sergeant, superintendent, or commander/director) • A list of at least four different food items your organization would like to sell at the Bazaar, in order of preference. The Ramstein Bazaar Committee will limit particular food items to one or two vendors (i.e., only two vendors will be allowed to sell hot dogs or bratwurst) to provide bazaar patrons with the greatest variety of food options. Private organizations will be notified by email of their application status once the private organizations and food choices have been approved by 86th FSS and Public Health. Selected private organizations will be required to pay a 200 dollars space
fee. Organizations that are chosen must also participate in two mandatory meetings (Food Vendor Selection & Food Safety Briefing), which will be held in June and August, respectively. At the June meeting, the space fee of 200 dollars will be collected. At the August meeting, organizations will be required to submit an additional check for 250 dollars as a refundable cleaning fee. Please note, failure to attend either meeting will forfeit your space at the Bazaar! For more information, go to the Ramstein Bazaar website https:// www.ramsteinbazaar.org/foodvendor-application or contact the Food Vendor Coordinator at foodvendor@ ramsteinbazaar.org.

Head and neck cancer on the rise

by Alofagia Oney Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Public Affairs In honor of April’s National Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Month, medical providers from the Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic, Oral Surgery Clinic and Speech-Language Pathology Department at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center held a head and neck cancer screening event at both the hospital and the Ramstein Exchange April 17 where over 130 people from the community were evaluated. During the five-minute screenings, patients were examined for signs and symptoms of head and neck cancers and were provided education on ways
to detect and prevent them. “The patient demographic has changed, mostly due to the rise in the frequency of the Human Papilloma virus, or HPV, which is associated with head and neck cancers” said Maj. Whitney Pafford, an otolaryngologist at the LRMC ENT clinic. “Whereas we used to see a predominance of head and neck cancers in older folks, we are now seeing them in people of all ages, even as young as 19, who have never smoked or drank alcohol a day in their lives.” Risk factors for head and neck cancers include tobacco, alcohol – the combination of smoking and drinking alcohol can more than double a per-
son’s risk – genetics, ultraviolet exposure from the sun, poor dental hygiene and viruses like HPV, among others. According to the Centers for Disease and Prevention Control, more than 110,000 people in the United States over the age of 18 are diagnosed with head and neck cancer, and more than 40 percent of those who are diagnosed die within five years. Head and neck cancers have surpassed cervical cancer in HPV related malignancies. Nearly 80 percent of these patients are men who are unaware they were exposed to the virus, according to the CDC. “The good news is that early diagnosis can more than double a patient’s
May 3, 2019 chance of survival, up to nearly 90 percent,” Pafford said. “The vaccine against HPV is approved for children as early as 11 years old, and when the HPV vaccine is received before exposure, it can prevent about 70 to 90 percent of these cancers.” During the event, providers looked for a variety of signs and symptoms such as mouth sores, pain or difficulty swallowing, red or white patches in the mouth, recurrent bleeding in the nose or mouth and numbness in certain parts of the face. “It’s important that people who experience some of the signs or symptoms don’t jump to conclusions and automatically assume they have a head and neck cancer,” said Pafford. “However, lesions, lumps or persistent symptoms for more than 14 days should be evaluated by a professional.” In addition to providers from the ENT clinic, Tracey Fischer, a speech pathologist at LRMC, was also present at the screening event to examine patients. While speech-language pathologists typically treat patients who have problems with speech, language and cognition, they are also specially trained to identify, evaluate and treat dysfunction of the muscles in the head, neck, tongue and mouth. While the Head and Neck Cancer Screening event only lasted for one day, Pafford encourages people to either consult their primary care providers or conduct a head and neck cancer self-exam if they have concerns. “Education is a big part of the process of early detection,” Pafford said. “The more you know about the signs and symptoms, the better you and your providers are able to properly receive treatment if you are diagnosed.” For more information on head and neck cancers, visit www.cdc.gov/cancer/ headneck.
Veterinary Medical Center Europe to offer appointments first Saturday of each month by Veterinary Medical Center Europe Veterinary Medical Center Europe, located on Pulaski Barracks, has expanded their services and is offering appointments on the first Saturday of each month for routine wellness, vaccination, and health certificate exams for DoD ID card holders, and their beneficiaries, in the Kaiserslautern Military Community. The first Saturday clinic will be held May 4. “Because pets feel more like family, we are enhancing our hours to better serve our community,” said Capt. Kristine Moss, Outpatient services Chief of VMCE.
VMCE is open the first Saturday of each month from 8 a.m. to noon for routine wellness, vaccination, and health certificate appointments for pets of service members. “We believe that the bond you share with your pets is vital to living your best life,” Moss said. “VMCE is the KMC’s full-service veterinary treatment facility providing routine and referral care with a fear-free and compassionate focus.” The mission of VMCE is to provide first-class care to military working dogs. This mission includes caring for MWDs who are medically evacuated from down range. Like Landstuhl Regional Medical Center provides care
to injured service members, VMCE is similar, it is a full service hospital for military working dogs which are evacuated from a combat theater or distant-duty site. “It’s a great privilege for us to provide that top-notch care to those dogs and to help those dog handlers whose life might depend on their dog. MWDs and handlers share a strong bond.” In addition to providing care to the military working dogs, the vet clinic also provides care to pets of service members stationed here. The staff at VMCE is available to help prepare for any upcoming PCS moves. If service members have received, or are anticipating orders to
another country, particularly an island assignment such as Guam, Hawaii, UK, Japan, or Korea, it is highly recommended to seek guidance as early as possible. These specific assignments may take months of preparation to meet import requirements, minimize stress, save money, and to allow as smooth a transition as possible. Veterinary Medical Center Europe is located in Bldg. 2928 on Pulaski Barracks. To schedule an appointment, contact the clinic at DSN 493-4444; commercial: 06313406-4444 or visit their Facebook page @ VMCEUR.

Finding a way home
U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Tylor Szatko speaks to Kaiserslautern Military Community members about his experience with the Air Force Assistance Fund April 18, on Ramstein Air Base. The Air Force Assistance Fund is a financial resource available to Airmen and their families.
Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Kaylea Berry 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs People never know how they will react when receiving a call informing them a loved one back home has been injured, or worse, passed away. In that situation, the last thing an Airman wants to worry about is how, or if, they’ll be able to pay for a plane ticket back home. U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Tylor
Szatko, 86th Munitions Squadron munitions inspector, experienced this panic while he was stationed at Kunsan Air Base, South Korea. His grandfather was about to pass away. He was unable to receive help from the American Red Cross due to the fact it wasn’t an immediate family member. Luckily his shop chief told him about the Air Force Assistance Fund through the Airman & Family Readiness Center. “The A&FRC told me about the Falcon Loan through the Air Force Aid
Society and how I was a perfect candidate for the program,” said Szatko. “I got a quote for airline tickets from the travel office on base, applied for the loan, was approved, and then was on my way to the States within a couple of days.” Since the process went quickly, Szatko was able to have some time with his grandfather. “Because of AFAF, I was able to get home and see my grandfather before he passed,” said Szatko. “This would
Page 11 not have been possible without them, and I was more than thankful for how much it helped me out.” Szatko’s grandfather was someone he looked up to growing up and one of the reasons he decided to join the military. “My grandfather and I were close. When I was younger we used to go fishing often and spent lots of time outdoors,” said Szatko. “He was in the Navy during the Vietnam War. My grandfather taught me the importance of hard work and perseverance.” Szatko also says that Airmen who are in a similar situation should take advantage of what the Air Force can offer them. “The military has so many programs in place that are designed to help Airmen with anything from finances, to difficult personal situations that one may have a hard time getting through alone,” said Szatko. “Never be afraid to ask questions, especially when it has to do with your well-being. Supervisors and first sergeants will be able to lead them in the right direction.” For more information about the Air Force Assistance Fund please contact the Airman & Family Readiness Center commercially at 06371-47-5900 / 5100 or by DSN at 480-5900 / 5100. You can also stop by their office in building 2120, Mon to Fri 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Information, opportunities abound at upcoming Military Spouse Appreciation Expo by Azure Hall Army Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation On Friday, May 10, the Kazabra Club on Vogelweh will open its doors for the second annual Military Spouse Appreciation Community Expo put on by Army Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation. This exciting event may be celebrating Military Spouses and the important role they play in our community, but spouses are not the only ones who will find value in the upcoming Community Expo. Particularly geared towards recently arrived military members and their families, this expo will provide a well-rounded educational opportunity on services available in the area. Representatives and info booths will include a number of local organizations ready to share information on what they, as well as Family and MWR, have to offer the Kaiserslautern and Baumholder military communities. However, even those who are not new to the area are encouraged to come out to the event; there is truly something for everyone. Free refreshments and snacks as well as fun activities will be available to sustain and entertain the
entire family. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. and the event lasts until 1:30 p.m. An education isn’t all that attendees have the chance to receive, the numerous local organizations sponsoring the event will be giving out prizes such as 1,000 dollars in European travel and one round trip airline ticket to the United States. Other prizes will include VISA and spa gift cards that are given away at the various Family and MWR info booths. Additionally,
Euler Group BMW will be giving away one pair of tickets to the Father and Daughter Ball at Armstrong’s Club – an event that is already sold out, making this pair of free tickets all the more valuable. Further sponsors include the Stars and Stripes, SATO Vacations, United Airlines, Ramstein Dental Care, the United Service Organizations (USO), SHARP, Landstuhl American Dentistry, Military AutoSource, Beauty Solutions, First Command,

Service Credit Union, and G.I. Bill Pay Service. Jacqueline Colindres, Sponsorship and Advertising Sales Manager for Family and MWR Marketing U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz, explained how sponsors add to the event, aside from just donating prizes. “Our many sponsors are an important part of helping Family and MWR provide its various services to the community,” she said. “With their help and support, we are better able to enrich the lives of Service Members and their Families with events like the Military Spouse Appreciation Expo.” There will be lots to see and do at the Military Spouse Appreciation Community Expo, but it is far from your last chance to learn about your new community from Family and MWR. Another Community Expo will closely follow this one, held on June 14 at Pulaski Park in honor of the Army’s birthday. This event is also open to all Kaiserslautern and Baumholder military community members. Visit kaiserslautern.armymwr.com for details on both expos and to learn more about other upcoming events.

Kaiserslautern boys, Ramstein girls successful in track and field meet by Robert Baldwin contributing writer Kaiserslautern sprinter Cedric Ellis won three times, Austin Higby swept the discus and shot put and the boys dominated the relays to win the rain soaked Kaiserslautern track and field meet on Saturday by just two points over crosstown rival Ramstein. The Raiders earned 203 points, Ramstein 201, followed by Wiesbaden with 121 and Baumholder 33. On the girls side, Ramstein defeated the field handily. “The rain and wind made a big difference on times for the meet, but the kids stayed in good spirits through the day,” said Kaiserslautern Coach Gabriel Horton who hosted the meet. “As a staff we looked at it as a progression week and less on trying to qualify for Euros.” Ellis has established himself as perhaps the top 200/400 sprinter in the league. He edged Wiesbaden’s fine runner Markez Middlebrooks in the 200 and outran Jaelon Bell and Cameron Chester of Ramstein in the 400. He was also a member of the winning 4x100 relay team. They will all square off again when the Raiders and Royals travel to Wiesbaden tomorrow. The forecast there is rain and temperatures in the high 40s. In the boys relays, Kaiserslautern won three of the four events, edging Ramstein in two of them and trailing the Royals in the 4x400. But it was a surprising Baumholder quartet that finished second in the SMR 1600 that may have kept Ramstein from winning it all. Senior Lorne Huxtable was the lead runner, followed by Brandon Bankston Jr., Chandler Pigge and Jesse Espinoza. Ramstein finished third in the event. Competing against the 1A schools is always a welcome challenge for Baumholder, whose enrollment is far less. In a sport such as track and field, the large schools will almost always outpoint the smaller schools because of sheer numbers. But Huxtable proved that talent is not exclusively the domain of the large schools. He won the first event, the boys triple jump, with a leap of 41 plus feet. Huxtable is a favorite to win the Euro 3A crown at that event. He said he relishes a chance to go against the big schools. “I think it is pretty fun” competing against the big schools, he said from under the Baumholder fans super umbrella in the stands. “I like the competition it gives me because it sort of pushes me towards something. But it is hard to jump in weather like
this because the rain is always coming down and it is hard to focus and I have to try my hardest to pay attention to what I am doing.” Huxtable’s jump was a foot less than his overall best and he says that in order to win the Euros, he feels he needs to top 44 feet “which is what I am aiming for.” His ultimate goal is to jump in college. In the boys distances, the Ramstein pair of Denver Dalpais and Dashiell Rogers won the 1,600 meters and then switched places in the 3,200. Freshman teammate Edward Collazo was right behind them in the 3,200. Kaiserslautern finished first, second, third in the 800 meters with sophomore Griffen Parsells, Joseph Purvis and Orlando Rojas finishing in that order. Ramstein freshman Gideon Zaugg broke the streak, and then was followed across the line by two more Kaiserslautern runners, Esteban Saldana and Yadiel Rojas. Yadiel Rojas later joined the winning trio as part of the victorious 4x800 relay team. Perhaps the most dominating performer was Kaiserslautern strongman Austin Higby. The senior won the shot put by eight feet and the discus by twenty feet. Higby moves his 270 pound frame through the shot and discus circles with great athleticism. Even though the day was miserable and the ring slippery, Higby did what all the great ones do, focused on what needed to be done in spite of the conditions. “Before the throw you have to get yourself really hyped up,” said the Kaiserslautern senior, who is headed to Texas State next year. “And then when you step into the ring, everything has to just go away. You have to focus on your main throw, like this one has to be the best one you have thrown ever.”.

May 3, 2019 Higby knows that one weekend does not make a season. He has his eyes on the Euros and knows with whom he will battle when the time comes. “I know for discus, Ogden Andrews from Ansbach is beating me right
now. He is throwing over 140 feet.” In the shot put, Higby named Stuttgart’s outstanding athlete Tripp Carroll, who will wrestle at the Naval Academy next year. Between the three of them, that’s over 500 pounds of athlete. Every individual boys event was

won by a senior with three exceptions, Ramstein’s Dominic Arizpe in the 100 meters, sophomore Parsells in the 800 and junior Bryce Thomas in the long jump. Arizpe defeated Middlebrooks and teammate Jason Jones in the 100. Ramstein’s Jeremiah Allen won the high jump. In the girls portion of the meet, Ramstein used its overwhelming depth to win with 242 points, followed by 151 for Kaiserslautern, 115 for Wiesbaden and 15 for Baumholder. Ramstein won nine of the events. Baumholder’s lone victory came from LaNiya Meyers in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 54.46.Wiesbaden’s two burners, Ashanti Scott and Whitney Bivins, swept the 200 and 400 but were relegated to second and third by Kaiserslautern junior Mallory Harris’ outstanding run in the 100 meters. Harris prevailed by ‘one one hundredth’ of a second. How fast is ‘one one hundredth’ of a second? It takes a person one third of a second to blink, a hummingbird one tenth of a second to flap its wings. In fact, ‘one one hundredth’ of a second is probably not perceptible to the human eye. But thanks to electronic timing, that was the margin by which she beat Scott. Harris finished third behind Bivins and Scott in the 200 meters. Teammate
Page 17 Skye Morton was fourth, followed by Baumholder’s Kya Williams. Harris also was a member of the winning 4x100 relay team. The three speedsters renew their rivalry tomorrow in Wiesbaden. In the 800, Wiesbaden finished first, third and fourth, sandwiching Ramstein’s Alexis Pierre-Louis in second. Ramstein swept both the 1,600 and 3,200 meter races. Jordanne Hill and Kriti Lucero took honors in the 1600 and Lydia Coddington and Catherine Hickman won the 3,200. Coddington, a freshman, finished at 14 minutes, a full 41 seconds faster than her second place teammate. In the relays, Ramstein won twice while Kaiserslautern and Wiesbaden won one each. Ramstein took the top three spots in the girls triple jump. Barakat Ibrahim added to her victory as a member of the 4x400 relay team, followed by Sophia Sobczak and Chloe Williams. Williams also won the long jump where the Royals took nine of the 11 places. Jaya Worthington of Ramstein won the 100 meter hurdles. Caprinia Goode of Ramstein took the shot put and Royal Patience Williams won the high jump.

Using appliances in your German home by FindItGuide.com One of the things that is most common between your U.S. home and your new German living quarters is the fact that you have appliances to assist you with your everyday tasks. Whether it is doing the laundry or washing the dishes, appliances provide a nice break from manual labor, but that is where the similarities end. Plan for longer cycles If you have not already experienced the two hour laundry cycle, be prepared for some extra time when washing your clothes. European appliances will take double (and sometimes longer) the time to run through the complete washing cycle than your units from the states due to efficiency requirements. Although the time difference can be a little inconvenient, especially if you are doing a wash for a larger family, you may notice your clothes come out a little cleaner. The added bonus of the longer cycle means your clothes are soaked in water longer (and with less water used than the U.S. units) resulting in cleaner clothes. It allows your detergent to activate over time, which releases the enzymes (and not from a quick flash of hot water).
Another reason for the longer cycle is the units only load cold water and they need time to heat. One more area of efficiency is the spin cycle. The speed of the spin is much faster, which wrings out more water and thus takes less time in the dryer. Don’t forget to turn off the water feed to your washer after each cycle (and don’t forget to turn it on before you start a load). Add salt to your dishwasher No, your dishwasher doesn’t need a little extra seasoning, but it does need a little help to keep the system clean. Adding salt to your unit prevents the system from clogging up while softening the water. It is important to note that you do not just throw a dash of salt in the unit before you push start. You should refer to the manual of your unit,
but if you don’t have one handy (you can always look online), you should look for a screw cap on the floor of your dishwasher. Dishwasher salt (sodium chloride) can easily be found in your grocery store or hardware store. Read the box for instructions, but it usually needs to be added about once per month. Clean out hidden lint traps in EU dryers Your EU dryer is likely a dehumidifier disguised as a dryer. Often there is not a vent connected to your unit which means the moisture has to go somewhere. The water is sucked out of your clothes and trapped in a container (often under your dryer) that needs to be emptied after each use. What you might not know is there are hidden lint traps that need to be cleaned out to keep your dryer running like a top. The trap you are familiar
Graphic by Maxx-Studio / Shutterstock.com
with is the dry lint trap, which is easily visible when you open the door. The hidden wet lint trap is the one that can go unattended for months, resulting in poor drying. It is usually located just above the water catch reservoir behind a panel that needs to be removed. The wet trap should be cleaned out every few uses. Check the manufacturers manual to get a detailed description of where your wet lint trap is located. Get a larger refrigerator from FMO Depending on what type of place you find to live in, you may come across the “college size fridge” in your kitchen. It can be quite common to find these small units in Europe, especially in apartments. If you want to give it the old “college try” and use the smaller fridge, more power to you. Just be ready to go to the store three or more times a week. This is normal protocol for Europeans, but Americans usually want to go once a week and be done with it. Your local FMO often has a nice medium-sized option that gives you enough capacity for your needs, but doesn’t take up your whole kitchen, as German kitchens can often be much smaller than those found in the U.S.
