Ramstein completes role in historic humanitarian airlift

COMMENTARY Beating Burnout by Col. Irene Folaron, MD 86th Medical Squadron commander I was at the height of my medical career. After nine years of medical education followed by 12 years as a full-time physician, I should have been pleased with my professional progress. After all, this was the goal all along. However, instead of feeling overwhelming pride, I felt overwhelming misery. Although I remained dutiful in my studies and patient care, I was simultaneously looking for something else…really anything else…to do. Every day was a struggle and it would take me a year to realize and admit in hindsight that I had experienced burnout. First described by H.J. Freudenberger and later by C. Maslach, burnout is a work-related syndrome marked by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a sense of reduced professional efficacy. With a prevalence as high as 50 percent, burnout among physicians has received increased attention due to the negative effects on patient care and the healthcare system. However, this phenomenon is not limited to physicians; a survey of business executives revealed that up to 60 percent of business leaders felt “used up” at the end of the workday, emotional and physical signs indicative of burnout. With today’s challenges such as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the demands of executing support of Afghanistan evacuation operations, leaders must remain cognizant of the signs of burnout not just in themselves, but their employees as well. Here are some reflections on how to avoid employee burnout:
Celebrate results Mission and vision statements represent the leader’s top priorities and anticipated pathways to achieve their most important goals. These statements are hung on walls, discussed biannually at the executive off-site, or routinely recited on presentations. While some employees can deduce an organization’s mission and vision based on their routine duties, they have not likely digested the mission in full detail. This is where the leader can steer their organization, applying the adage of “praise in public, punish in private.” When employees perform in a way that reinforces the mission, celebrate it widely. Publicly highlight aspects of the performance that emphasizes the mission and the resultant outcomes. When performance is substandard, provide timely feedback and remind the employee of the organization’s path. These cues from the leader will help employees understand how they can continue to add value to the organization, and knowing one’s value promotes employee enthusiasm which averts the risk of burnout.

Be a good steward of employees’ time Meetings are an essential part of business where leaders can communicate with their teams and reinforce priorities. When participants are chosen thoughtfully, they can all benefit by sharing ideas, gaining valuable information, and contemplating strategies to execute the leader’s vision. However, not all leaders reflect on their meeting culture, such as the frequency to hold meetings, the duration, or participant composition. Some meetings are either too frequent to be productive, too lengthy for the participants to stay engaged, or, with the recent evolution of online meeting tools, simply unnecessary. Also, meeting invitations can be cast out too generally for it to hold value for every invited participant. A meeting places deliberate constraints on employees’ time during the workday, so reflecting on the intended outcome and communicating that up front helps the team to stay engaged and understand their value in the meeting. Above all else, start the meeting on time and finish on time.
Protect down time Employees understand that they may not be able to control some aspects of their workday. Last-minute tasks or unexpected events may arise that force employees to reprioritize their agenda. Intermittent surging is inevitable in business. However, leaders must appreciate that off-duty time is when employees can regain control of their lives. It is the time when they can prioritize their personal needs over those of their occupation, thus enabling a work-life harmony necessary to prepare for the next (work) day’s challenges. Continually asking employees to extend their work hours, or to bring their work to their home beyond the workday, inculcates a mental risk-benefit calculation. When the effort to do the work becomes disproportional to the perceived benefits, work quality will suffer and the leader risks losing the employee to another endeavor where they can achieve a more conducive life balance.

Randall Reed, Third Air Force commander. “When they were in need, our country and its allies delivered. As a result, these courageous travelers can now begin a new chapter in their lives.” Ramstein became U.S. European Command’s primary evacuation hub soon after the first planes arrived Aug. 20 here. Ramstein Airmen, joint partners, family members, and thousands of volunteers and augmentees quickly assembled to create a city of “pods” on Ramstein’s flight line to hold the nearly 35,000 evacuees who processed through Ramstein during the operation. As the mission’s magnitude continued to grow, multiple communities stepped up to the occasion in a surge of support for the evacuee population. Approximately 6,500 U.S. Air Force Airmen, U.S. Army Soldiers, and NATO allies from the Kaiserslautern Military Community and other military installations provided direct support and expertise including logistics, maintenance, civil engineering, security, sanitation, and medical care. Within days of evacuees arriving, spouses had set up a clothing and donation center where they received and sorted donations to be distributed to evacuees living in the pods. Additionally, more than 2,500 local and host nation volunteers assisted with food service, English language workshops, spiritual welfare, donations, and other support. In all, approximately 110 tons of donations were provided to Afghan evacuees and more than 1.5 million meals were served to evacuees at Ramstein and Rhine Ordnance Barracks. The 86th Airlift Wing also ensured that cultural, dietary and religious needs of evacuees were a priority in the execution of the mission. Service members constructed prayer tents and filled the tents with donated prayer rugs. Chaplain (Capt.) Mir Ali — one of five imams in the Air Force — blessed thousands of meals on a daily basis.

“I remain incredibly proud of the immense work the entire team has done throughout this operation,” said Brig. Gen. Josh Olson, 86th Airlift Wing commander. “We ran to our nation’s call and met multiple challenges that we neither expected nor trained for. The success of this amazing operation could not have been achieved without the outpouring of support from our service members and their families, German partners, NATO, non-governmental organizations, volunteers, and interagency partners. They were the true epitome of selflessness, with nonstop caring, feeding, and protecting our guests for nearly two months while they awaited transportation to their next destination. At the end of the day, this operation was all about humanity, saving lives, and providing hope for a better tomorrow.” At the height of the evacuation, approximately 21,000 evacuees were awaiting onward travel at Ramstein and Rhine Ordnance Barracks. In addition, 39 babies were born to Afghan evacuees over the course of the operation, including one on a U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster III moments after the plane landed here. The majority of Afghans arrived via C-17s. Each flight carried hundreds of passengers, often landing minutes apart. The 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing at Ramstein managed the inbound and outbound airflow throughout the operation. “I am so proud of the Mobility Airmen, interagency partners and all of Team Ramstein who came together, fueled by human compassion and dedication to the mission, to ensure the safe transit of evacuees,” said Col. Adrienne Williams, 521st AMOW commander. “To witness this heroic effort firsthand was a sight to be seen and an experience that will never be forgotten.” In late September, flights to the U.S. from Ramstein temporarily

paused at the recommendation of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control after a small number of measles cases were discovered among evacuees already at transitory hubs in the United States. Approximately 8,800 evacuees at Ramstein and Rhine Ordnance Barracks received vaccinations for measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), varicella (chickenpox), COVID-19, and influenza over the next three weeks. Flights to the United States resumed Oct. 9, and intelligence, law enforcement, and counterterrorism professionals conducted screening and security vetting for all Afghans prior to their departure. 17, but a small number remained here after testing positive for COVID-19 during pre-departure COVID screenings. Those patients and their families were placed in isolation at Rhine Ordnance Barracks until it was safe to travel. The final flights transported evacuees to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. From there, most
evacuees traveled to one of several temporary safe haven bases in the United States while they await further resettlement. Ramstein AB has been one of the Air Force’s largest en-route locations for decades, providing transient support to contingency response and humanitarian missions around the world.

LARISSA AIR BASE, GREECE — A hulking C-130J Super Hercules sits on the moonlit tarmac of Larissa Air Base, Greece. A string of human figures emerges from a nearby hangar. Like ants, they make a quick procession into the back of the plane, which is already loaded with aircraft generators, tool carts and other bulky cargo. Moments later, the engines rev and the C-130 is airborne. This flight is part of Castle Forge, an ongoing U.S.-led operation in the Black Sea region. Its purpose is to test the partnerships and interoperability that make Agile Combat Employment possible. “We provide the agile combat airlift that the fighters require to operate from austere locations,” says the C-130’s pilot, Capt. Michael Plash, who is assigned to the 815th Airlift Squadron, 403rd Wing at Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi. “Our aircraft are equipped to carry their personnel, cargo, fuel and support equipment to execute any mission set the fighters demand.” Soon, the C-130 will touch down at Borcea Air Base, Romania, where the personnel and cargo will receive a package of F-15E Strike Eagles from the 4th Fighter Wing, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina, inbound the next day.
Two weeks ago, Plash had no idea he would be here in Eastern Europe. By definition, Castle Forge is meant to be carried out at short notice, but when other events in the U.S. European Command theater of operations put a high demand on airlift capability this autumn, planners at U.S. Air Forces Europe-Air Forces Africa turned to the U.S. Air Force Reserve for a solution. “By the time the 403rd Wing received the official notification we were going to Castle Forge, that left us with only two weeks to prepare,” says Plash. “We needed to find reservists who were capable of participating and then had to coordinate with USAFE, Air Force Reserve Command, the 22nd Air Force, and numerous other agencies to meet the demands of Castle Forge, plus ensure all of our members were properly trained and funded to execute the required tasking.” Plash is a full-time Air Reserve Technician with the 815 AS, but many of his teammates are traditional reservists, serving only one weekend a month and two weeks a year for training. This means that many had to leave civilian employers and families at short notice, with few details about what their mission during Castle Forge would entail. Against all odds, they made it happen. Now, alongside their active duty counterparts from Ramstein Air Base’s 37 AS, they are supporting a key initiative that has become central to how the U.S. engages with its NATO

allies and regional partners to strengthen interoperability. “Agile Combat Employment, or ACE, is the ability to quickly reposition to austere airfields and quickly generate aircraft and missions, so that we can keep potential adversaries on their toes,” says Lt. Col. Harry Starnes, Castle Forge project officer for the 4th Fighter Wing. “The reason it is important to train with our allies is that we are going to count on them and they are going to count on us to make this happen if we are ever actually called to fight in a conflict.” As Castle Forge continues this month at Larissa AB, Greece; Borcea AB, Romania and Graf Ignatievo Air Base, Bulgaria, the ability to rapidly move personnel and support equip-
ment between these locations will remain a central enabler of the F-15s’ ability to generate air power anytime from anywhere. Meanwhile, Air Force leaders are recognizing the advantage of total force solutions like the one provided by Plash and teammates at the 815 AS. “The airlift movements associated with Castle Forge are a prime example of our active duty and reserve teammates working together to get after the mission,” says Gen. Jeff Harrigian, NATO Allied Air Command and U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa commander. “Together, we were able to quickly forward-deploy the F-15s and generate combat-credible airpower in two key locations.”

Red Ribbon Week at Ramstein Story & photos by Airman Jared Lovett 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Red ribbons have been used by communities as a symbol of intolerance towards the use of drugs since 1985 in response to the murder of special agent Enrique Camarena of the Drug Enforcement Administration. In honor of Camarena and his battle against illegal drugs, the National Family Partnership leads the National Red Ribbon Campaign to spread awareness of the dangers of drugs to youth during Red Ribbon Week. Red Ribbon Week is held from Oct. 23 to 31 each year. “In spite of COVID-19, we’ve been able to go to these schools and educate students in person,” said Calvin Collosi, 86th Airlift Wing Drug Demand Reduction program manager. “I always feel being there in person is the best way to instill good ideas and behaviors instead of in a video or on the phone.” The theme for Red Ribbon Week this year was Drug Free Looks Like Me. The theme serves as a reminder that Americans make a daily contribution to their communities by remaining drug-free. Students attending schools in the Kaiserslautern Military Community took advantage of the opportunity by publicly pledging they would remain safe, healthy and drug-free. “We’ve had them sign pledges to stay drug-free and we’ve been putting those up around the school,” said Rachel Kotzar, Ramstein High School Adolescent Support and Counseling Services counselor. “It’s always optional, we never force them to because we want them to take it seriously since they’re signing their name

The schools also had special events for the students to further spread drug awareness. “We had military working dogs demonstrating what search and seizure looked like and the 86 AW pharmacist came in and talked to the kids about everything from over-the-counter drugs, to prescription and street drugs,” said Margaret Zohni, Ramstein High School ASACS counselor. The United Services Organization also supported the week’s campaign by handing out red ribbon themed merchandise to students of Kaiserslautern High School. Germans love their pets, but there are many different rules for dog owners that Americans may not be aware of before moving to the Kaiserslautern Military Community. The German American Community Office has put together some important information.

When many service members are notified they have been selected for an assignment overseas they may be excited about a variety of things, like the prospect of traveling and experiencing a new culture. Unfortunately, COVID-19 has put a damper on some of this excitement and limited opportunities to truly experience the country they currently reside in. This is true for some at Ramstein Air Base where service members who completed a permanent change of station may have missed the chance to experience an authentic Oktoberfest. Although many Americans
could be excited about attending the annual festival, it is possible they do not know the history behind it and how it came to be the event known today. Oktoberfest originates from Munich with the marriage of Ludwig I, the future king of Bavaria, and Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen, Oct. 12, 1810, where celebrations lasted five days. Citizens of Munich were invited to attend the royal wedding, participate in festivities, and watch horse races. According to the city of Munich’s website, www. muenchen.de, the celebration was so popular it was brought back the following year and also included an agriculture fair. Many new additions were
made in following years including horse races and food and drink vendors. These vendors eventually moved to beer halls in the 20th century. Today, Oktoberfest celebrations throughout the world pay homage to the Oktoberfest in Munich. The festival is traditionally a 17 to 18-day celebration, ending on the first Sunday in October. Since 1950, the mayor of Munich has kicked off the festival by tapping a keg. Oktoberfest in recent years has yielded six million visitors, including Germans and other tourists, and roughly two million gallons of beer. Quiet hours Dog barking has to be kept at a minimum. During quiet hours between 2200 – 0600 hours and 1300 – 1500 hours, dog owners must ensure that neighbors are not disturbed by barking, whining or howling. Outside these hours, dog owners must ensure that dog noises do not last longer than 10 minutes consecutively, respectively exceed 30 minutes cumulatively per day. If necessary, the dogs have to be kept inside the house in accordance with animal protection laws.

Leashing dogs The Office of Public Order (Ordnungsamt) reminds dog owners that they need to keep their dogs on a leash inside developed areas in community limits at all times. Outside developed areas, dogs must be automatically put on a leash in case of other persons approaching. Violations against these rules may be punished by fines up to € 5,000. The pollution of public places, in particular parks and playgrounds, with dog feces is on the rise, creating a health hazard particularly to children and a nuisance to the inhabitants as well as the community workers required to clean the litter.

Keeping dogs in kennels or on chains Chaining on a light chain (not more than 3,2 mm wire thickness) with two swivel joints on a rope of at least 6 m in length with room to move at both sides of at least 2,5 m. A broad, not strangling collar or harness is prescribed by law. When the dog is kept in a kennel, the kennel has to be at least 6 square meters in size not taking into consideration the shelter and board to rest. When more than one dog is kept in the kennel, at least three additional square meters have to be available for each dog. One side of the kennel has to provide free sight to the outside. Chaining of a dog inside the kennel is prohibited. The dog has to be walked for several times a day when kept in a kennel, a chained dog has to be walked for at least one hour per day. This is also applicable for dogs kept in stables, barns, storage rooms etc. An insulated shelter (hut) suitable for the size of the dog has to be provided. This hut is to be kept clean and dry. The bottom of the kennel is to be prepared in a way that water can drain off or ooze away. The interior of the kennel is also to be kept clean, dry and free of parasites. A resting board has to be available outside the hut. To protect the dog against excessive heat or sun, a place in the shade outside the hut has to be available. Daily feeding and always a sufficient amount of fresh water have to be ensured. The owner is to check whether the dog is okay at least once a day. The German Animal Protection Law, requires that “People keeping, caring for or having to care for an animal are not allowed to limit the animals opportunity for species-specific movement in a way that the animal suffers from pain, diseases or injuries.” If this law is violated a prison sentence of up to three years or fines of up to 25.000 € will be imposed. The Department of Defense recently launched a new landing page on MilitaryOneSource.mil designed to serve as a replacement for its previous information hub, Move. mil. The new page, PCS & Military Moves, features all the resources and assistance a moving customer might need for their entire relocation experience, saving time and making it easier to access information from one centralized location. Move.mil is scheduled to close on Nov. 1. After that date, visitors will be redirected to MilitaryOneSource.mil and U.S. Transportation Command will provide updates to content as needed. Customers can access the PCS & Military Moves landing page under the Moving & Housing section on the Military OneSource website. Once there, they can schedule a move and find resources related to shipping their personal property, as well as other aspects of their move. Some of the key information and tools include:

For nearly a year, U.S. Trans portation Command’s Defense Per sonal Property Management Office collaborated with the Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Military Community and Family Policy to transition personal property information to MilitaryOneSource. mil. The resulting webpages now provide a single access point for service members and their families to plan the full spectrum of their move. “The primary factor driving this transition was improved customer service by providing service members and their families with a single, integrated location to access information, resources and assistance during their moving experience,” said Air Force Col. Joel Safranek, director of the Defense Personal Property Management Office for U.S. Transportation Command. MilitaryOneSource.mil provides comprehensive information, resources and assistance on every aspect of military life. The updated web pages
are designed for service members, DOD civilian employees and their families who are or will be impacted by a move. “DOD’s Military OneSource program provides 24/7 support to military members and their families,” said Erika Slaton, Associate Director, Military Community Support Programs. “The Military OneSource website already provides significant relocation information, tools and resources. This made it the perfect place to create a centralized location for our military community.” Military OneSource is a DODfunded program that is both a call center and a website providing comprehensive information, resources and assistance on every aspect of military life. Military OneSource services are available worldwide 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at no cost to the user at 800-342-9647 or via secure live chat. For Defense Personal Property System, or DPS questions, contact your local transportation office or call 800-462-2176. The Customer Service page under the PCS & Military Moves section also includes an extensive list of additional support services for specific portions of a move. 86 MXS supports aeromedical ops
Racks built by the 86th Maintenance Squadron are being used by the 10th Expeditionary Aeromedical Evacuation Flight to store medical kits at Ramstein Air Base, Oct. 19. Building the racks was no easy feat. It took Airmen more than 16 hours to assemble each one and required Airmen assigned to the 86 MXS to learn a new set of skills such as welding the metal together and having to learn new blueprints and designs. Throughout Afghan evacuation operations, racks like these were built to meet the shortage in supply and to help flights carry more medical equipment.

Story & photo by Airman Edgar Grimaldo 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs At the end of September, the 86th Maintenance Squadron was tasked with the important mission of building equipment racks for Afghan evacuation operations at Ramstein Air Base. These racks were designed to hold medical litters used as shelves to hold medical equipment. They have been primarily used by the 10th Expeditionary Aeromedical Evacuation Flight and the 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron with the purpose of transporting patients and housing equipment. While the litters are traditionally used to transport patients and store equipment during flights, they have been repurposed and now serve many purposes. “Instead of having the gear laying on the ground we can have it organized on shelves to clear up room for more cargo and evacuees,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Justin Woody, 86 MXS aircraft metal technology non-commissioned officer in charge. “I take pride in knowing how
well we did our build and how quickly we were able to get it done,” Woody said. “We understood it was a time-sensitive operation, and I think our team took pride in knowing that we benefited so many people.” Building the racks was no easy feat. It took Airmen more than 16 hours to assemble each one and required Airmen assigned to the 86 MXS to learn a new set of skills such as welding the metal together and having to learn new blueprints and designs. “When it comes to welding, sawing and assembling frames those are things we are trained to do and do on a regular basis,” said Airman 1st Class Emily Suver, 86 MXS aircraft metal technician. “I have not done something quite like this where it holds so much significance not just to us and our military, but to evacuees.” Airmen have not only been challenged physically but mentally as well. “Throughout this whole experience, I learned a lot about deadlines, how to hustle and how to put the mission first,” Suver said. “Although we were sacrificing time
and sleep, we did it because we understood we had to set the next crew up for success and not failure.” The experience brought the shop together and showed levels of teamwork never before seen, Suver said. “Everyone in my team really stepped up, they teamed up and we all just got to work,” Woody said. “There was no complaining, there was no one doing anything they weren’t supposed to be doing, everyone kind of fell into a role and become an efficient machine.” While normally work like this is done in a deployed environment, some of the younger Airmen throughout the evacuation operations have had the chance to not only have a taste of a deployed environment but also a chance to refine their skills and operate in a more managerial position, said Woody. “I am really proud of my team and really proud to be a part of it,” Suver said. “It was really cool to see how a shop could come together and work as efficiently and flourish under the stress of this operation.”

Madrid was recognized for his accomplishments at Ramstein, including streamlining training within his squadron and reducing training time by 33 percent.

He plans on getting a master’s degree and is currently taking a class for a degree in emergency management. “When I get it, I probably will keep going and getting more education because that’s always been a top priority of mine,” he said. Further into his career, he would also like to go to Officer Training School to commission and wants to stay stationed overseas.

U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Ruben Madrid, 86th Airlift Wing Command Post senior emergency actions controller, comes from an Air Force family, with his father having served for 16 years. Madrid was born at Iraklion Air Station, Greece, but calls El Paso, Texas, home after living there for about 20 years. Growing up, Madrid was not sure of his future plans. He went to college and premedical school, thinking he would be a doctor. “I made it to my junior year and was taking neuroscience classes so I thought that’s what I was going to do with my life,” he said. “I kind of got stuck. I just didn’t really see myself doing it for the next 30 years or so.” He graduated with a bachelor’s in natural sciences and a minor in anthropology. But, Madrid chose to enlist in the Air Force and was stationed at his first duty station, Ramstein Air Base, in August of 2018. Madrid said one of the things he loves most about being stationed at Ramstein is having the opportunity to climb mountains. “This is a perfect place to do it,” he said. “I’ve already climbed the highest mountain in Germany. I know people like to take the tram up, but I decided to hike the whole thing.” He has also climbed the highest mountain in France, Mont Blanc, approximately 4,800 meters tall.
“I’ve always been very scared of heights because I’ve fallen off ladders and broken bones,” said Madrid. “A buddy of mine wanted to go hiking, so I said, ‘I’m gonna go with you.’ Eventually, it just started escalating to more extreme hikes, and I use that as a way to conquer those fears.” Madrid said he takes the same approach to the Air Force. He sets goals and pushes himself to improve, and that it paid off when he was recently awarded

DOD honors native Americans, their many contributions to the nation By David Vergun Department of Defense News The Defense Department and the nation are celebrating National American Indian Heritage Month, which is every November. It’s a time to reflect on the contributions and sacrifices Native Americans have made to the United States, not just in the military, but in all walks of life. A significant number of Native Americans have served in all of the nation’s wars beginning with the Revolutionary War. Twenty-nine service members of Native American heritage have been awarded the Medal of Honor, the highest medal for valor: 25 soldiers, three sailors and one Marine. About National American Indian Heritage Month In 1976, as part of the nation’s bicentennial commemoration, President Gerald Ford proclaimed Oct. 10-16, 1976, as “Native American Awareness Week.” In 1986, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed Nov. 23-30, American Indian Week. On Nov. 14, 1990, President George H. W. Bush declared the month of November as National American Indian Heritage Month to honor the hundreds of Native American tribes and people in the United States, including Alaska but not Hawaii. Native Hawaiians and those in U.S. territories in the Pacific are honored in Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month each May. Bush’s proclamation reads in part: “During the National American Indian Heritage Month, as we celebrate the fascinating history and time-honored traditions of Native Americans, we also look to the future. Our Constitution affirms a special relationship between the federal government and Indian tribes and — despite a number of conflicts, inequities, and changes over the years — our unique government-to-government relationship has endured. In recent years, we have strengthened and renewed this relationship.” In 2009, President Barack Obama proclaimed the month as National Native American Heritage Month.

However, DOD celebrates the month as National American Indian Heritage Month, following the name specified by a joint resolution of Congress, Public Law 103-462, of Nov. 2, 1994, according to Army Staff Sgt. Raul Pacheco, a public affairs noncommissioned officer at the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute at Patrick Space Force Base, Florida. “There are over 574 federally recognized American Indian tribes and not all agree on what term is most appropriate,” he said referring to the name American Indian or Native American in the heritage month title. In 1995 a Department of Labor survey was conducted, which asked American Indian members their preference on how they desired to be called. That survey showed a split with about 49.76% preferring American Indian, 3.5 % Alaskan Native and about 37% preferring Native American. Others in the survey preferred other terms such as First Indigenous People, Original Peoples or had no preference. Pacheco noted that the number of tribes also tend to grow each year as additional ones acquire Bureau of Indian Affairs recognition.

Viticulture in Germany By Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Germany is one of Europe’s largest winegrowing countries. From September to early December, the harvest season sees wine fests of all sizes in almost every town. The Moselle and Saar valleys, both in Rheinland-Pfalz, along with Rheinhessen in the north is the largest viticulture area in Germany and makes up about two-thirds of the German winegrowing regions. Most of the vineyards are on or very close to the 50th latitude, which is rather unusual in international comparison. High quality and successful viticulture is only possible based on a special unique meso and micro climate condition. The “Deutsche Weinstras se” (German wine road) stretches 85 kilometers from Rheinhessen in the north to the French Alsace region in the southwest and ends at Deutsches Weintor (wine gate). Many famous towns such as Bad Dürkheim, Neustadt and Landau lie along the way and the region is renowned for vineyards as far as the eye can see on flat plains in close proximity to the Rhine River. The special mild climate zone provides 1.800 hours of sun a year. Another famous viticulture region is along the Moselle and Saar rivers, but on steep slopes with up to 60 percent inclines. Approximately 60 million vines grow along the steep hills where the winding rivers reflect sunlight onto the slopes and warm the vines to ripen to a plentiful harvest. The Celts were the first to cultivate white grapes along the banks and slopes of the Moselle river almost 3000 years ago. However, the vineyards on the steep slopes of the Moselle and Rhine Rivers have to be picked by hand, a very tedious and back-aching task, with thousands of harvesters working with century old techniques. Grapes are stomped by foot in a traditional method during the Kelterfest in Piesport along the Moselle River. Former wine queen Martina Servaty even stomped herself into the Guinness Book of World Records when she pressed 12.76 liters (3.3 gallons) of juice out of a barrel with 50 kilograms (110 pounds) of grapes. After the initial grape pressing process, also known as keltering, the premier wine produced is called “Federweisser” (feather white) because of its milky, white color. Although very sweet in taste, it also

has a high alcohol content and is often sold in containers in little booths along the road side. A tradition that comes with the season is delicious and spicy “Zwiebelkuchen” (onion cake) together with the semi-processed wine. The warm dish, more of a quiche than a typical cake, with onions and bacon bits, is a per-
fect complement to the fizzling new wine. Freshly pressed, pure and sweet grape juice is also a perfect alternative for those that prefer a non-alcoholic delight. After the first winter frost in late November or early December, the very last grapes are handpicked and processed into a sweet, rare and expensive “Eiswein” (ice wine). Wine festivals take place in almost every village throughout the season and Neustadt/Weinstrasse is the host of the German Weinlese Fest (wine harvest fest) with a parade and a wine village set up with wooden booths to celebrate the harvest season. The German Weinkönigin (wine queen), required to have a broad knowledge of the different types of grapes and wines and their making, is crowned for a year. Bad Dürkheim has the world’s largest wine fest and Landau holds the “Fest des Federweissen” (Federweisser festival), both in October.

Sembach vehicle registration offers new way to stand in line Photo & story by Shaylee Rawls Borcsani U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz U.S. Army Europe Registry of Motor Vehicles at Sembach Kaserne is introducing a new virtual queue that will allow customers to stand in line via a cellphone. The virtual queue program begins Nov. 1. It will allow patrons to scan a QR code or visit a website to get into a virtual line rather than standing in a physical line outside of the military DMV building. “The goal of this program is to give customers the freedom to check-in to our queue and be able to go grab a cup of coffee from
the Java or take care of other tasks on Sembach,” said Victor Baez-An, Sembach Registry of Motor Vehicles operations manager. “We are introducing this program as a tool for people to be able to see their wait times and to know if we are full for the day.” Leading up to the official start date, the vehicle registration office will intermittently use the program to provide training to its staff members. This may cause some delays and confusion for those who are needing assistance leading up to its start. “Please have patience over the next week as we train and become familiar with the new system,” said

William Paquin, Sembach vehicle registration policy advisor. “We want to make sure when this officially starts the program operates smoothly and allows for a great customer service experience.” The process for getting a spot in the queue is simple, at the facility use your smartphone to scan the QR code. You will be prompted to give your name, phone number and reason for the visit. When complete, do not close the web browser. “Once we are within five numbers of assisting the customer they will receive a notification in their browser and, depending on your phone make and model, a SMS text to make your way to the front of the building,” said Michael McFarland, Sembach Registry of Motor Vehicles senior vehicle registration specialist. “Once they are at the door, the customer will see a monitor through the glass, the individual will watch that screen and when their number is called they can proceed to the service counter.” This new program will give customers better wait time estimations and to see if there is still availability for the day. “While you can technically
check-in from the comfort of your home, you will need to be present when your number is called or you will forfeit your place in line,” said Baez-An. “If you are checking-in for a spot first thing in the morning, you will need to be present at our office. If you are not there we will go on to the next customer. “You will also need to be in the area once you have a spot in virtual queue,” continued Baez-An. “This program is designed to place you in a line and is not an appointment so we can’t predict the exact time for being seen as the wait time will change depending on manning and services being conducted at the counter.” During a typical day, the staff, on average, can assist approximately 10 customers with registration-type transactions in between accomplishing their primary duties. “We want to help as many people as we can but as a headquarters that processes all vehicle transactions in USAREUR-AF, this isn’t our primary duty,” explained Baez-An. “We recognized a need in the community which we are uniquely able to assist with and we want to make sure we have the best customer service.”
Baez-An said like all things with technology, there can be glitches, like no cellphone service or perhaps the customer doesn’t own a smart phone. “In case someone has problems with the system they can come to our service counter and we will manually check the person into the system, but they will then need to monitor their place in line on the television screen,” said McFarland. The virtual queue will be open during normal business hours and, like the usual line, there will still be a limited amount of people they can help in a single day. “We cannot predict the needs of each person,” said Baez-An. “We will monitor the queue to make sure everyone in line will be helped but, at some point, we will shut down the queue once we have hit capacity. The goal here is to be transparent with our customers and provide better customer service.” To access the virtual wait customers can scan the QR code once they arrive at USAREUR-AF Registry of Motor Vehicles. WOLFSTEIN from Page 1 Neu Wolfstein Ruins Despite the name, “new” Wolfstein castle ruins consist of an outer wall, and little else. Inside the wall is a 1930s war memorial, an interesting read for history buffs. The views from the ruins are beautiful, and include a look down on the grapevines growing hillside.
Chalk Mine One really cool tourist attraction in Wolfstein is the chalk mine “Kalkbergwerk am Königsberg.” (https://kalkbergwerk.com/) The mine stopped being operated in 1967, but you can still take an underground tour. Kids will love the train which runs through the mine, giving mini-miners a look at life as a chalk excavator.
Alt Wolfstein Ruins “Old” Wolfstein castle ruins date back to 1170. There is more structure of this castle remaining, although it’s not available to explore. Most of the fun of these ruins is found from the short ½ mile hiking path one takes to reach the structure from Neu Wolfstein. It’s a light hike, perfect for dogs and kids and comes with many places to rest and admire the view along the way. Avid hikers can continue on the Höhenweg trail from this point (just follow the signs)!
The mine is open Sundays and Holidays from 1-6 p.m. Prices for the chalk mine are €4.50 for children and €5.50 for adults. You can also get a family pass (2 adults and 1 child) for €14.50. Make sure you bring cash to pay for admittance. Call ahead to arrange an English tour and to find out about current opening times and Covid regulations: 06382 791 116. Kalkbergwerk am Königsberg is located about 10km south of Lauterecken on B270. Parking is available just down the road on Hauptstrasse. You can also walk to the mine from the Wolfstein train station; it will take about 10 minutes. How to Get There
