Holiday Crafts Story and photos by Lisa Helenius contributing writer
L
adies, hear my call. Save. Your. Corks. ‘Tis the season to start thinking about holiday gifts for your friends and loved ones. It is a necessity, nay it is your duty, to collect enough wine corks to make one or all of these cute crafts. Your husband asks, “Are you having a second glass of wine?” and you reply, “This is for your mother’s gift.” What a good daughter-in-law! Your best friend says, “Why do you have so many wine corks? Are you a hoarder?” Au, contraire mon frère! I am gearing up for craft season! There is a craft for everyone. For the notso-crafty, you can make these cute place card holders for your holiday table. All you need is a serrated kitchen knife. That’s all. Slice a tiny piece off the bottom, so that it doesn’t roll around and cut a slot in the top for the place card. Oh so cute and, “Oh my, aren’t you clever!” For the beginner, we have this adorable bird. Supplies: serrated kitchen knife, hot glue gun, one cork, a twig, two peppercorns, a piece
of craft foam, some gardening wire, felt, needle and thread. Sew a felt hat that fits the cork, keeping an extra piece of thread sticking out the top for hanging; poke the wire in the bottom for feet and hot glue everything else on that little peeper! Et voila! Wine cork bird city! For the high achieving wine crafter, you can go full rocking horse! “Wine cork rocking horse? Oh no, you didn’t!” What will you need for such an ingenious holiday creation? Serrated kitchen knife, hot glue gun, 6 wine corks, fun yarn, cork sheets or thick craft foam, peppercorns or black beads, decorative ribbon, extra decorations as you wish. Isn’t he the cutest? Hang him off a bottle of wine as a gift and – boom – game changer! I don’t even need to give you directions for this guy – just make some cuts on your corks, measure up and hot glue that little guy into cute oblivion! Happy crafting! And, please, start preparing now. Ahem, you know what I mean (wink, wink).

Plätzchen recipes

ermans love Christmas cookies so much that they designated an entire word to it: “Plätzchen.“ This means if you’re looking for cookies anytime between January and October, they’re “Kekse” but as soon as the first lights are put up, they will all be replaced by the seasonal “Plätzchen”. Yes, even if the dough is technically the same all year round. No matter what you call them, I love myself some Santa-shaped, sugar-coated carbs. So let’s put on some Michael Bublé and enjoy these four classic German cookie recipes.

Pfefferkuchen
This is my great grandmother’s recipe and the embodiment of my childhood as we spent countless afternoons making and eating these. The original recipe could feed (and did feed) an entire extended family so I cut it in half but you might still want to store some of the dough in a dark cool place until you’ve run out of the previous batch.

Bu erplätzchen
It doesn’t get more simple or classic than this one. Prepare the dough in advance and take it out of the fridge whenever you’re ready to make sure it’s firm and doesn’t crumble when you roll it out.
Ingredients: 250 grams butter 250 grams sugar 1 packet vanilla sugar 6 egg yolks 500 grams sifted flour

Kokosmakronen
These fluffy, soft and exotic party favourites are quick to make, moist and offer just a hint of Caribbean flair during gloomy December afternoons.
Instructions:
Mix and knead all ingredients. Roll out thinly. Cut into any shape your cookie cutter allows. Bake at 320°F / 160°C for 15 minutes. Get creative with icing, toppings and other sorts of decoration.
Ingredients: 200 grams shredded coconut 250 grams powdered sugar 200 grams marzipan 2 tablespoons rum 5 egg whites juice of 1/2 lemon optional: oblaten (a type of paper-thin wafer)
Vanilla crescents were my favourite growing up. Their crumbly texture makes them a perfect fit for coffee, tea or hot chocolate.
Ingredients: 250 grams flour 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 125 grams sugar 1 packet vanilla sugar Salt 3 egg yolks 200 grams cold butter or margarine 125 grams ground almonds or hazelnuts
Ingredients: 250 grams honey 250 grams sugar 125 millilitres water 7 grams potash 7 grams hartshorn 100 grams raisins 100 grams almonds or hazelnuts 50 grams candied orange peel 50 grams candied lemon peel 750 g flour 7 grams cinnamon 2 grams ground cloves 25 grams cacao 2 eggs
Instructions:
Mix and knead all ingredients. Store in fridge for at least 45 minutes. Roll into an even snake. Cut little pieces. Roll each into a ball and form crescents. Bake at 347°F / 175°C for 15 minutes. Coat
Instructions:
Bring honey, sugar and butter to a simmer. Dissolve potash and hartshorn salt in water by shaking it in the empty honey glass. Grind raisins, nuts, candied lemonand orange peel in a food processor. Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl before adding the remaining ingredients along with the eggs and knead well. Let sit for at least one night. Bake at 360°F / 180°C for 5-6 minutes. Glaze with lemon juice and powdered sugar.
hot cookies with a mixture of powdered- and vanilla sugar.
Tip:
Instead of forming crescents, use the back of a wooden spoon to make a dent in the balls and fill them with jam. Bake with the others.
Instructions:
Beat egg whites until stiff. Mix all ingredients and fold in egg whites. Use a piping bag or spoon to form walnut-sized drops (either on baking sheet or oblaten). Bake at 360°F / 180°C for 20 minutes. If you like, you can partly coat them with melted chocolate.

The Italian Riviera From one coastline to another, the Italian Riviera is simply a geographical extension of the Côte d’Azur that begins in the Italian city Ventimiglia and ends at Capo Corvo. More commonly known to the locals as the Ligurian Riviera because it includes almost the entire coastline of Liguria. Some of the better-known areas on the Italian Riviera include Genoa, Portofino, and the Cinque Terre. The Italian Riviera oozes charm and irresistible allure, with many
seaside resort towns and colorful villages that seem like the long-lost cousins of newer seaside paradises found elsewhere. Considered somewhat of a utopia, the area has been a haven for artists, writers, celebrities, and royalty since the 1800s. With its mild climate and unique beauty, the Italian Riviera should definitely be a top choice! With so many options to choose from, be sure to plan your trip by using any number of helpful websites. Some people consider shopping during the holidays overwhelming. In fact, more and more people are purchasing gifts online to avoid the crowds and emotional reactions. According to a 2017 eMarketer Report, Ecommerce (online shopping) accounted for a record 10.6% of total retail sales in the U.S. during the 2016 holiday
season. That same report expects online sales to grow to about 16% this year. Despite the facts, there are still millions of people who prefer to physically shop for their family and friends. For many of us, the easiest solution to our holiday purchasing tactics is to ‘go to the mall.’ Luckily, there are shopping centers nearby that can relieve some of the stress associated with finding the perfect gift!

Stuttgart turns back Ramstein for DoDEA championship 2017 by Thomas Warner contributing writer Photos by Thomas Goode Ramstein High School’s Royals football team was in position to earn another Department of Defense Education Activity prep football championship but fell short in a wild 26-21 loss to Stuttgart. This was the third time in four seasons that the Royals have gotten to the title game with lots of momentum shifts and big hits, keeping the large crowd frenzied until the final moments. Ramstein held leads on multiple occasions in the game, staged on the Kaiserslautern High School campus at Vogelweh. The Royals scored after an early Panther fumble, when Naser Eaves caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Trevor Miller. The Royals looked to Eaves on both sides of the ball and the tall junior repeatedly made plays that mattered. The offensive star of the night for Ramstein was senior Gevaughn Bracy, who scored two touchdowns and racked up 128 all-purpose yards. He had a pair of long gains wiped out on consecutive penalties late in the third quarter but coaches called his number again and he rambled 41 yards for a touchdown, putting the Royals ahead 21-20 following a third extra-point kick by Dylan Grimes. “I was exhausted out there and that third play, I didn’t expect it, but the hole opened up and I was like ‘Touchdown!’ said Bracy. “It was back and forth for us and for them all night. At the end it was just two good football teams and someone had to make a big play. Unfortunately, it was someone on the other team.” Stuttgart’s game-winner was by receiver Devon Burton on a seam route touchdown throw from quarterback Chris Magalona. The Panthers swept left end on a two-point conversion try but Ramstein’s Detajee Johnson slammed the ball carrier and kept the score at 26-21, giving Ramstein hope of a final comeback. “This was everything a championship game ought to be,” said firstyear RHS coach Carter Hollenbeck. “When you have a five-point game, that’s a play or two, here or there, and it could go either way. Our first game against Stuttgart we weren’t gelled as

a team. Offensively or defensively, we just weren’t together. For this second one, we game-planned, we focused … I couldn’t be more proud of this team.” Ramstein varied its offensive schemes with Jakob Steinbeck under center but spent most of the night with Miller calling signals. Miller threw complete to Eaves on the last Ramstein possession, setting the Royals up at the 26-yard line, but a pair of long heaves to the end zone were defended nicely
by Stuttgart’s Will Tonder and the Panthers took over to run out the clock. It was the second time the Panthers had beaten RHS, after their 22-9 regular season victory in September. “When we were going to play Stuttgart the first time, we didn’t set foot on the practice field the whole week because it was rainy and bad weather,” Miller said. “It was all just ‘film Monday, film Tuesday, and no actual practices. They played a hell of a game.” Stuttgart head coach Billy Ratcliff said his staff made changes from that first encounter. “They hadn’t seen us throw to our running back as much and we really went there a lot tonight. Our receivers made some big catches for us and we were just able to make a couple more plays than they did. Ramstein did a lot of things right, too, in this game and they were really up to the challenge.” Nick Clinton and Sean Elliott were defensive RHS stalwarts and combined for over 20 tackles in the game. A senior linebacker, Elliott gave credit to his coaches while Clinton stated it was teammates around him who put him in position to make his big hits. “We were not this same team when we played them the first time,” Elliott said. “Today, I am extremely proud of
my guys and we were so close to winning this game. I know Ramstein will be back.” Bailey Holland also had a big game for the Royals, running the football for over 60 yards and making some key tackles on defense. “I didn’t run the ball the first time we played Stuttgart so tonight was different,” Holland said. “We did a lot of things better this time and I am going to miss playing with all these seniors who will graduate.” “Number 47 is the heart of the team,” Hollenbeck said of Holland. “He does so much for us and he is a leader out there. Like I said, with a five-point game there are going to be two or three plays that, if they had gone different, could have changed the outcome. There wasn’t anything really negative about the way we played this game. All these players gave us huge effort but we just fell short.” Early in the fourth quarter with
Ramstein leading, senior defender, CJ Jackson, picked up an apparent fumble and made a long run to the end zone. Officials had whistled the play dead and ended a wild celebration by fans, then on the next snap Stuttgart’s Magalona threw the touchdown to Burton that pushed the Panthers in front for good. The first half was riddled with penalties on both teams plus turnovers that set up scores. Following Ramstein’s first touchdown, the Royals bobbled a punt snap and Stuttgart came out of the scrum with a recovery in the end zone. Ramstein punter Matthew Reismann was injured on the play and taken from the field by paramedics for precautionary reasons. He returned to his team’s sideline in the fourth quarter and watched the late Royals’ rally fall short. “The pace of the game went really fast,” Clinton said. “It was pretty much what I expected. Our team had gotten better throughout the year and we were able to contain them better. It was back and forth. We were focused on containing their receivers and we wanted to keep their running backs in check because they are so fast … making sure we wrap up.” Hollenbeck said there were far more positive aspects of the season to be outweighed by the championship game loss. “The kids did a good job of buying in with our philosophy of playing hard, having fun, and respecting the game. When all that happens, success takes care of itself. We work hard at practice. We build a character program. If we lose we will look at the opponent and say ‘good game.’ There are always going to be growing pains.”
Ramstein Royals football has won three championships since 2010 and as head coach Carter Hollenbeck completed his second season he pointed to continuity as the major point of emphasis. “We’ve had six coaches – Hall, Elliott, Bradley, Short, Shurden, and myself – who have been here since I took over two years ago,” Hollenbeck said. “We added Coach Hall, an offensive line/defensive line guy, this year so if your staff is consistent you are going to have that much that’s already in place.” Ramstein counted on leadership from 17 senior players who enabled growth in the program following the team’s 22-9 loss to Stuttgart early in the regular season. “Those players who are with a program for two or three years will start drills at practices and show younger players the routine of what is expected,” Hollenbeck said. “All of Coach Hollenbeck a sudden you look up, and the juniors are becoming leaders. It’s a system that just refuels itself.” Players like Gevaughn Bracy and Jackie Harris, plus linemen Caleb Love, Nick Lowe, Owen DeTingo, and Jackson, were able to memorize a program blueprint that has enabled the Royals to appear in the playoffs every season since 2010. Others must now assume the roles if RHS is to continue the success. “The junior varsity did really good this year,” Bracey said. “They went undefeated and only got scored on in one game, I think, so there is a lot of talent that will be returning. It hurts to end this way but there is nothing we can do about it.”
Ramstein defender Sean Elliott had a hand in over 20 tackles for the Royals during the championship game.

Need an Adventure? How about Kili? Story and photos by Alexsis Blake contributing writer
“T
ime to get up,” was the soft but forceful sound my tent mate and I heard at 11:30 p.m. That’s right, 11:30 p.m. That was just six hours after being asked to go to our tents and rest. Now, at 15,200 feet above the Africa’s Great Rift Valley, it was time to rise, get our boots and warm clothes on and start walking. Ahead of us lay upwards of twelve hours of putting one foot in front of the other, so this early start was necessary. This trip through the frozen night on Africa’s highest mountain, the majestic Kilimanjaro, was months in the making. Once the decision was made to take on “Kili,” it was time to notch up the training, acquire gear, and get high. Living at 7,000 feet above sea level, with access to peaks rising above 14,000 feet, made this easier for us than the low-landers on our team
who hailed from Florida. After months of preparation, it was time to test our resolve. “Pole, Pole,” the mantra of our Tanzanian guides, “slowly, slowly,” had been chanted to us from day one, which at this point was six days earlier. We started our trek at the Machame Gate, 5,900 feet up the world’s highest free-standing volcano. From there, we followed what is popularly known as the Whiskey Route, named for its intoxicating views. On this journey, we crossed five vegetation zones while moving up 16,170 additional feet to the summit which rests at 19,340 feet. Our summit bid was by no means a lonely affair. 35,000 climbers attempt to scale Kilimanjaro every year. According to RMI Expeditions (Rainier Mountaineering Inc.), only 45% of those who try reach the summit. Luckily for us, we purchased our trip through RMI because we knew we wanted to hike with

BEST VARIETY
BEST HIDDEN GEM ANDERMATT, SWITZERLAND If you are looking for a place that is never crowded and is lacking the hustle and bustle of the big resorts in the Alps, but still have the mountain, snow and stunning views, try Andermatt. Located next to the Gotthard pass, Andermatt is the ski town no one has heard of. Snow is aplenty and every type of terrain is available. The Gemsstock offers extreme terrain while Sedrun offers family friendly cruising. The resorts are connected by the Glacier Express train (included in your lift ticket), which is an adventure in itself as it climbs through the Alpine winter wilderness. Andermatt is not for the late night crowd. Things quiet down around 8 p.m. here. For the traditional Swiss chalet experience, try the Hotel Schweizerhof. If you are looking for an economical stay (think high-end youth hostel, but very clean), try Sust Lodge am Gotthard. Travel — From Wiesbaden and Kaiserslautern, you can make it between four and a half to five hours. From Stuttgart, it is about three and a half hours.
PORTES DU SOLEIL, FRANCE/SWITZERLAND If you are looking for endless variety, Portes du Soleil, France, should be on your short list. The literal English translation is “the Doors of the Sun” but translates to “the Gateway to the Sun” and is situated between Mont Blanc in France and Lake Geneva in Switzerland. An impressive thirteen resorts makes up the ski region and what is more impressive is your lift ticket covers all of them! It is easy to be intimidated by the second largest ski resort in the world (Les Trois Vallees, France, is number one) with over 200 lifts in the system that links all the resorts and the fact that it straddles two countries (France and Switzerland). And yes, your passport is required when you are skiing in case you don’t make it back to your country of origin at the end of the day and have to commandeer transportation back. I enjoyed one of the best powder days I have ever had in Châtel, France, when we received three meters of snow in a four-day period (snorkel depth!). The steep and deep was plentiful for advanced skiers. It doesn’t all have to be about powder and fast skiing. There is so much variety, even the most amateur skier can enjoy the endless cruisers going from resort to resort while you explore the HauteSavoie region. The resort is so expansive, the best bet for a multi-day trip is to pick your resort for the day and take the free bus to it. If you are looking to see endless valleys while you are getting to your destination, you can ski to your chosen resort, but be aware – you may take half the day getting there. The variety of this amazing resort should not be taken as a negative. It definitely is not. In one single week trip, you can experience what most people need three or four trips to accomplish. Keep in mind you can get a six day pass for about 220 euro. Compare that to resorts in the states like Vail in Colorado which is a fraction of the size and commands a whopping $665 for a five-day pass (in February). Avoriaz, France, is the most modern skiing/boarding of all the resorts and has accommodations totaling 14,000 beds. Morzine is the largest French town with a traditional market center and offers plenty of easy and intermediate skiing right from the village. Châtel is right on the border of Switzerland offering two main areas and easily links to Torgon and Morgins, Switzerland. Les Crosets and Champéry are Swiss villages with plenty of tradition. Les Crosets boasts large fun parks for the kids.
Travel — Make it in five-hour drive from the Kaiserslautern and Wiesbaden areas and about four and a half from the Stuttgart area.

Travel — From Wiesbaden and Kaiserslautern, you can make it in about five hours (if you don’t hit traffic) and a short three and a quarter hours from Stuttgart.
BEST DAY TRIP LA BRESSE, FRANCE
Whether you are looking for epic terrain, a ridiculous party scene, breathtaking views or amazing hotels, Sankt Anton am Arlberg has it all. To begin with, the resort that is credited for its part in inventing skiing, is part of Ski Arlberg in the Tyrolean region in Austria, which means when you buy your lift ticket, you also gain access to 88 lifts and 305 kilometers of pistes. Resorts such as Lech, Zuers, St. Christoph, Stuben, Warth and Schroecken are all interconnected and offer a wide variety of terrain for the whole family. To start with, you can find extreme steeps as well as lazy cruisers at St. Anton. You can also find a vast network of trams (seilbahn) and gondolas (gondelbahn) that can get you quickly to another area of the resort. In fact, take a minute to look at the engineering that goes into these amazing lifts. It’s not a bad idea to enlist the help of one of the many famous ski/snowboard schools no matter what level you are. You’ll pick up some great pointers as well as have a guide that knows exactly where to go for the best skiing/boarding experience. If you are looking to let loose a bit, Apres-Ski time (anytime after 2 p.m.) has lots of on-mountain sun decks and bars. Keep your eyes open at the end of the day on your last run down the mountain for options, but a can’t miss is the Mooserwirt, known for its great music and packed sun deck. Be sure to store your equipment in a safe spot as things get a bit interesting when the bar closes at 8 p.m. For dinner time, the town of St. Anton has lots of great options from pizza (try Pizza Pomodoro) and sushi to typical Tyrolean fare (Restaurant Maximilian), but take heed… always make a reservation for dinner! Late night clubs are a plenty in St. Anton as well. Many of the restaurants turn into hot night spots that are open late into the night. For lodging, holiday periods will be on the pricey side (as with all resorts), but non-holiday periods are actually quite reasonable considering the quality and location of this world-famous resort.
Maybe you don’t have a week or even four days to get down to the Alps, but you want to take the family skiing a bit closer to home. Try La Bresse in the Vosges mountains in the AlsaceLorraine region of France. The mountains are not quite as big as the Alps, but with ample snowmaking, terrain parks and even hotel options at the base of the mountain, families can have a great time carving up the slopes here. A single day pass is only 24 euro and ski and snowboard school rates are reasonable as well. There is cross-country skiing available too.
Travel — From Kaiserslautern and Wiesbaden areas it takes about five hours and just over three hours from Stuttgart.

I pick Garmisch-Partenkirchen as my best bang for the buck for two simple reasons: VAT forms and U.S. dollars! It is rare that you can go to an amazing European Alps destination and take advantage of the logistical support that goes along with serving overseas. It can account for huge savings, especially if you end up going on a little shopping spree at one of the local outdoor shops. Add onto that the local Armed Forces Recreation Center at the Edelweiss Lodge and Resort, where you pay in dollars and you have saved yourself some serious coin. All active duty and civilian personnel serving in Europe can book a vacation at the Edelweiss, which is a full service resort (see “Edelweiss Article” on page XX). A host of the Winter Olympics, various World Cups and endless other top-tier events, Garmisch offers skiing, boarding and much more. The Zugspitze, Germany’s highest peak, offers a serious tram ride to the top (look for the new tram in December 2017) with plenty of high-alpine sliding on the glacier. A number of other smaller ski areas are perfect for the family, like Hausberg, Kreuzeck and Alpspitze, which are interconnected. Time your stay right and catch one of the many ski jump events at Grosse Olympiaschanze. While you are there, hike up to the Partnachklamm, an amazing cavern hike along the mountain stream, the Partnach.

BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK GARMISCH PARTENKIRCHEN, GERMANY
BEST SNOW ZERMATT, SWITZERLAND Known as one of the most reliable resorts for snow in the Alps, Zermatt sits up high in the Swiss Alps at 3,802 meters (12,473 feet). Due to the high elevation, Zermatt doesn’t have an opening or closing date because you can ski all year round. The car-free resort town, situated next to the Matterhorn, gets storms from the east and south as they barrel through the Alps, ensuring a steady supply of fluff and more grins per run. Zermatt can be pricey, as you are both paying in Swiss Francs and high-end resort accommodations. If you are looking to save some money, you could also look at staying in Cervinia, Italy, which connects to Zermatt and uses the euro currency, but if you are going to do this trip, do it right and stay in Zermatt (even if you only go once). Travel — From Kaiserslautern and Stuttgart, you can make it in about 6 and a half hours and approximately seven hours from Wiesbaden.

PLAY BALL
It’s easy to see how a game of catch can improve hand-eye coordination. Ball play also helps with reasoning, balance and vision. It also accomplishes the difficult task of eccentric strengthening (strengthening with a controlled release rather than lifting) of large and small muscle groups. TIPS:
Mix it up. Try balls of different sizes, textures and weights. Add a Frisbee or an American football into the mix. Rather than tossing back and forth, throw or kick to a target. Get sporty: dribble a basketball with the hands or a soccer ball with the feet, swing the baseball bat or the hockey stick, even work in a game of golf. Children of any age are welcome on the Rolling Hills Golf Course in Baumholder accompanied by a responsible adult. Club rentals are available for players as young as three; teens 16 and up can golf on their own. The Woodlawn Golf Course accepts children six and over with their parents. Skills mastered now will prepare your child for team sports later.

FUN ACTIVITIES THAT IMPROVE
CHILD DEVELOPMENT
by Angela Cerrito contributing writer
Did you know that simple, active play helps your child’s development? It’s true. In addition to basic fitness, active play improves concentration, coordination, learning, social skills and much more. Though your family may already have some favorite activities, see below for more ideas and how they help with development.
Photo by Anna Nahabed / Shutterstock.com
TAKE A HIKE
We live in an area rich with hiking trails of many lengths and difficulty levels. In addition to the physical benefits, children learn about themselves and their surroundings when hiking. Because most hikes are low-impact, hiking can incorporate other interests like photography, nature, and history. TIPS:
Challenge your child by incorporating side stepping, braiding, or walking backward on the trails. Performing these uncommon motions on uneven surfaces challenges not only coordination but proprioception (knowing where your body is in space) and vestibular (balance) skills. Incorporate learning into your hikes – study plants, weather, bugs, towns… the possibilities are endless. Add a challenge such as a kilometer goal or a certain number of castle ruins to explore. Check out the many barefoot walking trails in the area for warmer months. For older children, consider hiking longer and more challenging routes or even hut-to-hut hiking in the Alps.
FUN AND GAMES
Laughter, logic and leadership go hand and hand with play. So, jump rope, hula hoop, or pass out the swim noodles and play tag. Overcome obstacles by designing your own obstacle course with everyday items. In addition to balancing, inclines and declines, add stepping on pillows or other soft surfaces to part of the course. This is another way to challenge balance, proprioception and vestibular senses. If the weather won’t cooperate, design an obstacle course inside.

RIDE A BIKE
Many German communities have special trails and courses for bikes and pedestrians. While there are obvious strength and endurance benefits from bicycling, riding a bike can aid your child’s development in other areas too. Cyclists learn to navigate their communities and care for their equipment. Bicycling is a pre-driving skill as riders learn the rules of the road.
TIPS: Let children make-up games, explain the rules, and keep score. Have them design, plan, and build the obstacle courses (check for safety, of course.) Try an outdoor ropes course or go climbing and bouldering. The climbing wall at Outdoor Recreation in the KMCC Mall welcomes families and children as young as two-years old to climb, though they must be sixteen to belay (manage the ropes to support another climber.) Most of all, join in! Kids aren’t the only ones who benefit and learn from active play!
TIPS: Look over a map and include your child in planning the route. As children gain experience, see if they can orient to home and other familiar landmarks to improve memory, perception and sense of direction. Being involved in bike maintenance and use of personal safety equipment teaches responsibility, safety, and self-awareness. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Angela Cerrito is a pediatric physical therapist and a writer. When researching her children’s novel, The Safest Lie, she interviewed Irena Sendler, who rescued 2,500 children from the Warsaw ghetto. The Safest Lie was named a Guardian Best Book of the Year and a Notable Social Studies Book by the Children’s Book Council and the National Council for Social Studies. Fairytale scenery with an American twist
Eibsee lake with Zugspitze mountain range near Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.
by Bret Helenius
W
hen we are young, we are told of places that are like fairytales. Gingerbread houses with snow-capped mountains. Mountain streams with the color of green emeralds running through lush green valleys. Horse drawn sleighs. We are also told fairytales are just a myth when we get older. What if I told you such places do exist ... and they take American dollars! I was reminded of these fairytales when I arrived at the Edelweiss Lodge and Resort by the Bavarian mural painted on the side of the hotel and again when I turned around to see the mythical Zugspitze (Germany’s highest point at 9,717 feet) towering above the resort. The Zugspitze Arena (the area immediately around the Zugspitze in Germany and Austria) is riddled with beautiful palaces, stunning wilderness areas that would qualify as “fairytale” like. The night my wife and I arrived had a perfect full moon (I promise) coming up over the mountains and I quickly ran inside to fetch a couple glasses of wine and arranged a couple chairs from the beer garden located outside Pullman Place restaurant so we could soak in
the atmosphere after a tiring drive. Needless to say, I scored big points with the missus for starting the trip out right. The morning greeted us with bright sun and granite-faced peaks coming through the terrace doors and a surprisingly well-rested night’s sleep. I say surprisingly because I am probably the most finicky sleeper known to man due to long-time back issues. The beds were incredibly comfortable. A quick bite to eat and down to the grand lobby (with massive Alpine fireplace) to hook-up with our Alpine Adventures guide Kyle. Kyle toured us all over the place. To Ettal to see the monks’ ancient beer production, then to Oberammergau to hit the Alpine slide and see the site of the Passion Play (only once every 10 years; make your reservations for 2020!). As we toured around with Kyle, we talked to him about the winter and found out he is a ski instructor in the winter time for the Edelweiss. My interest quickly peaked as half of my life was spent in ski boots (the cold season half). We shared stories of teaching skiing (you can also get ski lessons at the Edelweiss) and moved onto our big powder stories. After a duel of “can you top this, powder edition,” I would call it a draw. He got me excited to come back to
The Bavarian mural painted on the side of the hotel.
Edelweiss when the snow starts flying. That brings us to now. The snow is flying. I am scheduled to go down to Garmisch-Partenkirchen at the end of December to get a taste of the white gold. I am getting my ski legs ready and walking around the house in my boots (yes, that is a thing) to get my feet ready for my tight ski boots. Don’t worry...if you are just looking for a good time, your boots will be much more comfy than mine. If you want real comfy boots, try snowboarding! They have snowboard lessons and equipment at the Edelweiss too! The Edelweiss Lodge and Resort is an Armed Forces Recreation Center. There are five recreation centers around the world including Dragon Hill Lodge in Seoul, Korea, Hale Koa in Waikiki, New Sanno Hotel in Tokyo and Shades of Green on Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. The MWR program was greatly developed in 1903. Congress authorized development of PXs, libraries, schools, recreation centers, and gyms. The establishment of these organizations led to the creation in 1941 of “Special Services.” By the end of World War II, Special Services had established the first Armed Forces Recreation Center in Bavaria.

VIENNA
A cutting-edge place for the holidays Story and photos by Thomas Warner contributing writer
Vienna at Christmas time is indeed cold and not a place where children under maybe 10 years of age are going to last for very long without complaining. Still, it is a fantastic city to experience during these chilly months whether traveling alone, with a partner, or with the entire family. Travelling toddlers are especially apt to come undone during excessive exposure to cold temperatures so the best advice is to plan indoor activities and get the most out of your Austrian holiday. A plane will get you to Wien in about an hour, but driving will take eight or nine, maximum. Going by train is a popular mode and there are even Flex Bus options that are cheapest of all, if you are willing to put in some extra hours. We flew, with three passengers, for under 300 euro and used public transportation or taxis throughout the four days we spent in this town famous for centuries for being one of the “in” places for all of Europe.

”
Schoenbrunn Palace holds many of the riches and artifacts of the Habsburg dynasty and is a favorite place of both locals and tourists in Vienna.
Today, the city is easy to traverse with aboveand below-ground trains, trams, U-bahns, and buses on the modernistic public transport system. Check the Wiener Linien website and buy bulk tickets ahead of time to save headaches of long lines or machines that might be out of order. Day trips to Salzburg or a wine tasting excursion are easy to navigate from the local transportation system and you will be back by sundown to continue exploring the inner city. The Museum Quartier of Vienna is an area near the center of the city where lots of touristic and historical focus is placed. Many types of stimuli have been built here in the past 20 years and within a short walking distance are older, more established museums. Checking online for the museums you want to visit will save time in a queue and maybe sooth the nerves of those little ones you might be taking along on the trip. One website says MUMOK / Museum of Modern Art and ZOOM are both trendy and good for kids who like interactive activities, but we did not make it to these. A favorite that we visited is the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Museum of Art History, which houses ancient Egyptian antiquities, paintings, sculptures, and tons of both elaborate and intricate works of art from multiple genres. There is a wonderful cafe inside and couches spread throughout the sprawling complex. This alone is a splendid place to spend a complete day. Gustav Klimt and his blurry artistic boundaries between art and eroticism can be found at the Belvedere Museum while master composers Johann Strauss and Wolfgang Mozart have their lifetime achievements documented in multiple museums. Other Viennese museums of note are Hofburg House, Albertina, and one spotlighting the life and work of noted psychologist and cultural icon Sigmund Freud. It was Freud, Alfred Adler, Victor Frankl, and other deep thinkers who organized the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society that gained notoriety as the 20th century unfolded and there are also Freud museums in London and the Czech Republic, where he was born.
St. Stephen’s Cathedral dates back to the 1300s and sits atop ancient catacombs. It is available for viewing on inexpensive, guided tours but can get crowded during the holiday season rush.
Horsemen adorning the massive Maria-Theresien Monument overlook the edges of one of several Christmas markets seen throughout the city in December.
The Neptune Fountain in front of Albertina Square is an inspiring exterior landmark along with the thousands of paintings and artworks housed inside the Albertina Museum.
Christmas Markets in Vienna offer many of the same options as are seen in Deutschland at this time of year. Brown, wooden mini-houses serving meats, cheeses, deserts, and Glühwein will greet you as you enter a lot of the public platz areas of the inner city. Although the main market area is near Belvedere Palace, we actually found a smaller one close to the Gardens of Schoenbrunn Castle that was easy to navigate and had
more to offer than we expected. We ate eclair cakes, dusted with white powder sugar, and our daughter washed hers down with apple juice at another nice old-themed market close to St. Peter Cathedral. The Baroque-themed church that stands there today is perhaps the most recognizable structure in Vienna and was built in the early 1700s, but its roots date back before 1200. Ever heard of the Lipizzaner stal-
lions? These massive and beautiful horses are trained at the local Spanish Riding School in Vienna and perform daily, have morning exercise walk-throughs, and are part of other events offered daily. There is a tie-in to American World War II General George S. Patton and any interaction with these horses will appeal to all ages. Heavy doses of wiener schnitzel, sauerkraut, sausage dishes, and traditional hearty foods are served in Vienna restaurants, with so many customs and traditions still being shared with neighboring countries. Hotels are middle-range pricey but our family usually checks out apartment rentals whenever we plan trips throughout Europe. Remember, daytime temperatures around late December in Vienna average 40 degrees Farenheit / 4 Celsius but it will get colder at night. Pack proper clothing including gloves and hats for extra protection on hands and ears. Cold weather should not deter you from diving in to this tantalizing city. Kaerntner, Mariahilfer, and Graben are a few of the numerous shopping streets that stretch throughout the Vienna landscape and feature choices from highend outlets to less expensive stores. You can trace the dynastic history of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy or explore how the Italian poet Petrarch or the German statesman and writer Goethe had huge followings in Vienna. It all depends on what piques your interests but be sure, Vienna is a city that has always been on the cutting edge and a trend-setter nation respected and admired in all of Europe.

WINTER CITY DESTINATIONS BARCELONA, SPAIN
by Bret Helenius and Aaron T. Grogg contributing writers There is no question that winter has arrived in Germany! With that never-ending gray sky, the chilly temps, and the wet rain or snow on the ground, it is easy to just close the front door, kick off those boots, and climb onto the couch with a blanket and the remote control… But with winter also comes so many fantastic travel options in and around Germany! Singles, couples or families: winter is a time to travel! You will find lower prices, smaller crowds, and completely unique experiences all around you. So here are two lists of places-to-go and things-to-do, compiled by AdvantiPro staffers, that are sure to help you shake off your winter blues!

MUNICH, GERMANY
About the authors: Bret Helenius, part-owner and Chief
Executive Officer at AdvantiPro, offers a couple snowy and a couple not-so-snowy travel options. While Barcelona and Rome may not exactly be warm, they will certainly be warmer than here! And while Munich and Innsbruck may even be colder than here, both are absolutely gorgeous in the snow! Living in Europe for nearly ten years, Bret moved here to play baseball, before combining his experience running his own travel business and working in marketing to help lead the team at AdvantiPro. In his off time, Bret loves to travel, hikes, bikes, and tries to find deep powder in remote areas for his favorite winter sport: skiing.
You might want to save Barcelona for a summer trip, but going to Catalonia’s capital city in the winter months can be a spectacular trip. Temperatures don’t get Germany-cold and what you will save in cash will be substantial. Consider the delicious Tapas restaurants (try Tapas 24) you can visit with some of the best food you will ever eat. The famous artist and architect Antoni Gaudi’s influence on the city is apparent. Don’t miss Gaudi Park (Parc Güell), Gaudi House Museum (La Pedrera) and the famous church La Sagrada Familia. The Gothic Quarter is an area to explore (try a Fat Tire Bike tour to save the legs).
Like other big European cities, Munich (München in German) will have a fraction of the crowds in winter time (although Christmas market time is busy, but worth it). The Bavarian capital has lots to do if you like historic buildings (see the Glockenspiel at Marienplatz) and churches (learn the story of the Devil’s Footprint at Frauenkirche). A trip to Munich isn’t complete without a stop at the Hofbraeuhaus to drink big beers and sing German songs (get the Schweinehaxe — delicious pork roasted on the bone) but you may want to try the lesser known Augustiner Braeustuben for great tasting beer and amazing food. Munich can be on the pricey side, so a winter trip can be what the doctor ordered for your wallet.
INNSBRUCK, AUSTRIA
Aaron Grogg, part-owner and Chief
If you are looking for an elegant city in the Alps, Innsbruck is it. A former host to the Winter Olympics, the capital of the Tyrolean region is the perfect home base for day ski and boarding trips with a resort right from the city center (accessible by tram, take the Nordkette funicular,) as well as historical imperial architecture. Check out the Goldenes Dachl (Golden Roof) in the old town to see a roof made of pure gold for the marriage of Maximilian I and his wife. The Tyrolean Folk Show is great for the family as well.
Technology Officer at AdvantiPro, offers a few standard, and a couple not-so-standard, travel options. From pretty-easyto-get-to Amsterdam, Paris and Prague, to slightly-harder-to-get-to Iceland, and then how-do-you-even-get-there Kakslauttanen, Finland, there are travel options for all kinds of people! Having moved to Germany more than six years ago, Aaron worked at a German technology company for several years before putting his management and technology experience together at AdvantiPro. Aaron spends his free time traveling, hiking, biking and trying to learn German.

ROME, ITALY What can you say about Rome that hasn’t been said? It has to make your bucket list before you leave Europe. Summer can be extremely hot and busy, while winter temperatures are cool but comfortable. Think about a winter trip to Italy’s capital to see the Trevi Fountain, Colosseum, Vatican and endless list of amazing historical sites. Stay in a neighborhood slightly off the beaten path to experience more mom and pop restaurants for the real Lazio region fare.

ICELAND
FINLAND
It might seem off to leave the cold, only to go somewhere colder, but Iceland is so fantastic, the weather doesn’t even matter. The people are so warm, the terrain is so primal, and, if you are lucky, the Northern Lights are so magical, that the frigid temperatures will not even matter! Fly into Reykjavik, take a shuttle to downtown, and take day trips to see the major sites. If you are lucky enough to have more than a couple days, try getting out to some other towns to stay; small towns, yes, but experiences you will not forget anytime soon!
Again with the cold winter getaway? Yes, but this time, fly into Helsinki, if you have time to hang out for a couple days, do so, but if not, hop on a small plane north to go to Ivalo, then take a short bus ride to Kakslauttanen (www. kakslauttanen.fi/en), for your magical stay in a glass igloo. There are a ton of activities, but really, do you need more than just laying there, looking up? Photo by Tikchalida / Shutterstock.com Photo by Thampitakkull Jakkree / Shutterstock.com

PRAGUE
AMSTERDAM If you have not yet been, Amsterdam is simply one of the chillest cities you will ever visit (and not just because of all the “coffee” shops, which, by the way, you do not have to visit). Amsterdam is almost completely level, with all those incredibly quaint canals and bridges over them, gorgeous leaning buildings (there is a reason they do that), and amazing history. Amsterdam also happens to be one of, if not the most, diverse cities in all of Europe. Museums, bars, restaurants, canals, tours, and yes, coffee shops. Just awesome.

PARIS I have never been to Paris at a bad time of year. Sunny, rainy, snowy, overcast, warm, cold, it just doesn’t matter: the City of Lights is an amazing host no matter. If it is your first time, you can walk to pretty much all the bigticket sites. If you are done with all that, there is no better Parisian experience than simply sitting at a cafe and watching the Parisians go by. Paris also happens to have one of the best Christmas Markets; be sure to climb to the top of the Arc de Triomphe for a view of the lights lining the Champs-Élysées and the Eiffel Tower all alit.
Another amazing town, offering just about everything you could want: a castle on the hill, a river cutting through the middle of things, a funicular, great beer, great food, great people, amazing history, and gorgeous architecture. Now sprinkle a light dusting of snow across everything, and you have a truly magical experience. Prague is surprisingly walkable (okay, mostly), and is very fitting for the entire family.

German spas: A how-to guide
Photo by Subbotina Anna / Shutterstock.com
What to expect:
1. Changing rooms may not be separate and are likely less lavish than that of an American spa. 2. Swimsuits are worn in most areas and in the pool with the exception of the sauna. 3. Showering before entering. 4. Flip-flops are recommended for walking around.
The Sauna
Saunas and steam baths tend to be one portion of the overall spa experience. In fact, it is more common for people to go to a spa solely to use the sauna. Saunas are commonly found near a swimming pool and typically look like a wooden cabin. Germans are very particular when it comes to sauna etiquette so if you
The Spa
Similar to the U.S., German spas typically offer wellness treatments like massage and facials in addition to the use of their sauna. Therme, or thermal baths, are what Americans call a day spa and are purely medicinal in nature. Therme typically offer
Where to go:
So now that you know what to expect, feel like you could use a relaxing day, weekend, or week? The good news is you are closer than you think. In fact, if you’ve ever seen signs for Bad Duerkheim or Bad Kreuznach, you are all set! The word Bad in German translates to ‘bath’ and when used as a prefix (Bad Duerkheim) or suffix (Wiesbaden), the town is
are hoping to blend in, be sure to know what you’re getting yourself into.
What to expect:
1. Nudity is normal. Europeans as a whole are much more relaxed when it comes to the human body. In fact, Germany established its first nude beach on the island of Sylt in 1920. Massage areas are typically towel only or in German, FKK (Freie Körper Kultur, meaning free body culture). Some places might let you get away with wearing a towel in the sauna as long as you are nude underneath. Depending on where you go, nudity could be mandatory, so if you’re not big into letting it all hang out be sure to check the spa’s rules ahead of time. If you think Germans already stare too much and you decide to cover-up at the spa, expect the staring to continue. 2. Shower before entering. 3. Enter the sauna quickly so as to not let too much heat escape. 4. Sit or lie on your towel with every body part on it. Germans are very particular about this! 5. Most (if not, all) saunas are co-ed. 6. Bring a bathrobe and flip-flops for walking around other areas of the spa as well as a few towels for drying yourself off and sitting on. 7. The average sauna session is between 20 and 30 minutes although it is typical to re-visit multiple times throughout the day. 8. Loud conversations are a ‘no-no.’

Water Parks
Bet you weren’t expecting this to be an option! If you have children and realize that kids are typically persona non grata at spas and saunas, water parks are likely what you’re looking for. Hydro-parks have become more popular in recent years and most include additional inhouse spa facilities for adults. Win-win! Similar to that of what can be found in the States, most water parks offer indoor and outdoor pools for yearround enjoyment along with massive slides and rides.

Wouldn’t it be nice if there were a place you could go for some pampering? Guess what?! There is! Bonus: many are close to the KMC area. Regardless of how long you’ve been living in Germany, you may have always wondered about the elusive spa and sauna experience. Admittedly, I knew nothing about them before arriving overseas except from my experiences back in the States: Massages, whirlpools, facials, etc. But after some digging I found there is much more to the spa/sauna experience in Germany. Adopted from Roman tradition, the concept of a spa was originally created for soldiers returning from battle as a form of hydrotherapy. In Latin SPA or sanus per aquam means ‘health by water,’ so it makes sense that when we think of a spa we think of water and pools. The spa culture is so important in Germany (over 900 registered across the country!) that treatments and visits can be prescribed by your physician and are covered by the federal health care system. You read that correctly. German health care covers spa treatments. Commonly seen as vital to maintaining health, Germany considers the spa a natural and logical remedy for stress and anxiety. It’s important to know that there are a variety of spas and each have their own rules of etiquette and unique methods for relaxation.
a variety of saunas, steam baths, and tanning beds with a separate section devoted to cosmetic treatments (think manicures, pedicures, and massages). While day spas are popular, most locations also offer hotel accommodations. Treatments are typically separate from any hotel costs and it is recommended they be booked in advance.

Mulled wine —
the German winter favorite with a twist
by Leonie Milde contributing writer Glühwein, which literally translates to ‘glow wine,’ is a staple at every outdoor event throughout the winter months. It lets you continue to take advantage of your convenient location in the heart of Rheinland-Pfalz’s wine region without sacrificing any fingers as you’re watching snow fall on the romantically lit Christmas markets you will spend your holiday season at. And because we know there are days when you just don’t want to go outside but still crave a cup of liquid Christmas joy, here are 6 ways to make it at home: all you need to do is heat the wine, making sure it never boils or the alcohol will boil away, either add all ingredients straight to the wine or put them in a tea filter and let it sit for at least half an hour before reheating. Pour through a strainer or take out bag of spices. Serve hot. Photo by Oksana Shufrych / Shutterstock.com
Red Cranberry If you like sweet and fruity drinks, this variation was made for you. • 1 bottle of dry red wine of choice • 17 ounces cranberry juice • 2-3 ounces orange liquor (Cointreau or Grand Marnier) • 2 cinnamon sticks • 1 apple, sliced • optional: dried cranberries (add before serving)
Red Classic You can never go wrong with a classic red wine and cinnamon! • 1 bottle of dry red wine of choice • 1 orange, sliced • 2 sticks of cinnamon • 3 cloves • 2 - 3 tablespoons honey, agave syrup or sugar
Photo by Lyudvig Aristarhovich / Shutterstock.com
White vanilla Photo by Irina Rostokina / Shutterstock.com
Apple wine Being a Hessian staple, this could not be missing on my list. Apple wine is far less sweet than one would presume and generally diluted with either lemonade or water so don’t leave that step out or it may taste too bitter. • 1 bottle of apple wine of choice • 3-4 ounces water • 3 tablespoon sugar • 3 cloves • 2 lemons, sliced
Try a white take on the classic mulled wine. • 1 bottle of dry, white wine of choice • 1 cup orange juice • 1 teaspoon cloves • 2 star anise pods • 1 teaspoon cinnamon • 1 tablespoon “gingerbread spice” (look for ‘Lebkuchengewürz’ at any German supermarket) • 1 vanilla bean • 3-4 tablespoons sugar, honey or agave nectar
Photo by Roman Stetsyk / Shutterstock.com
White Apple Apple and cinnamon will warm your heart on gloomy afternoons while the rum adds just a hint of beachy sunshine to your cup. • 1 bottle of dry white wine of choice • 13 ounces strong apple tea • 2 tablespoons fresh ginger, sliced • 1 organic orange, sliced • 1-2 ounces brown rum • 3 tablespoons honey • 2 cinnamon sticks • 1/3 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1 apple, thinly sliced (add just before reheating)

Dogs love going on
walks!
L
iving with a pet, particularly a dog, is an enrichment for everyone who loves animals. But, as with all kinds of pets, the most important thing before taking a dog into your home, is making sure that you will be able to satisfy all the new family member’s needs. Dogs are very sensitive and social individuals. One of the most important you need to provide is enough exercise by taking it out on walks. Some people may think that a dog is satisfied with playing in the yard or dog park but walks are not only crucial for its physical health, they also allow them to see new things, discover all kinds of distractions, get used to regularly seeing foreign people, socialize with other dogs, get used to traffic and noises of daily life. A healthy, adult dog needs at least 2 hours of walking per day. For puppies, it is a little differ-

ent. Their bones and joints are still fragile and soft. For them, the average is 1 minute of walking per week of age. This means an 11 week-old puppy should not be walked more than 11-15 minutes at once. There are wonderful places in and around Germany where dogs can run freely and off the leash. And your dog is not the only one who will benefit from the walks: going out into nature, breathing fresh air, exercising and meeting new people is just as healthy for us humans. A lot of German citizens speak English and encountering fellow dog owners often leads to new friendships. Taking your dog on walks means that your furry friend needs to be well-trained: it should not pull on the leash, bark at people or other dogs. Those are very important skills, which your dog should learn quickly. Otherwise walks can be more than frustrating for the both of you.
Once your dog has learned to behave outside, you will see how refreshing and relaxing a dog walk can be. It will come home, exhausted and satisfied, happy to simply lie down and take a nap for the next 2 or 3 hours, dreaming of all the exiting things he has just encountered. And believe me, you will feel the same. Nothing better than a good walk in fresh air! During the winter months you might lack the motivation to go out and may consider cutting your usual routes short once the days do the same. However, winter walks come with a number of health benefits and should not be underestimated, not to mention the fact that your dog does not care about the weather and still needs his daily workout. Once you’ve given your body a few minutes to adjust to the cold, nothing but good things will follow. Any form of exercise, no matter the

pace, increases your overall energy for the rest of the day while simultaneously helping you sleep better and longer at night. Vitamin D is crucial to your bones’ health by supporting your body in absorbing calcium and noticeably boosts your mood as it functions like a natural antidepressant. Unplugging for as little as one hour each day can help reduce stress and feelings of anxiety as well as inspiring you to enjoy the beauty that’s right in front of you, be it nature, friends you meet on your walks or simply your dog’s happy face as it frolics through snow-covered fields. This is a tale of very flawed people making very bad choices. This is Suburbicon. Starring: Matt Damon, Julianne Moore Noah Jupe, Oscar Issac
