COMMENTARY: Find your role, make a difference Story and photo by Col. Sean Finnan 86th Operations Group commander For several reasons, I’ll remember this wrench for the rest of my life. First, it will forever symbolize a portion of my contribution to the ongoing evacuation operation. More importantly, it helped me (re)learn some valuable leadership lessons. On Aug. 17 at 1 pm, the 86th Airlift Wing and the 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing stood up our Operational Planning Team to begin preparing for the influx of thousands of Afghan evacuees into Ramstein Air Base. We received our first guests on Aug. 20. It has been non-stop, 24/7 operations since. As you can imagine, everyone was 100 percent involved, contributing any way they could…building tents, moving equipment, setting up fencing, placing cots, etc. Team Ramstein continues to accomplish the nearly impossible every day and will continue to do so until the last Afghan departs. A few days into our operation, I was coming down from the air traffic control tower and saw an Operations Group member I recognized across the ramp. I walked over to him and asked, “What can I do to help?” He said: “Sir, I need a wrench. We have a group of 13 peo-
ple in that tent we need to discreetly move to a different area. We need to exit through this fence juncture, but we don’t have a wrench to undo the bracket.” I said: “I’m on it.” Off I ran to a building that I thought might have one. I burst through the door and asked if they had a wrench. They found one and off I ran back to the fence. We successfully loosened the bracket,
moved the fence, and the next thing I knew, I was carrying luggage through the fence lane and helping two Afghan men lift an old Afghan woman in a wheelchair into a bus. Off they went, we refastened the fence, and the wrench went into my pocket. When I returned to the wrenchowning building, the guy I borrowed it from said: “Keep it. You
+ event calendar + movie schedule + travel articles & videos
may need it again and I know you’re good for it.” I carried that wrench in my pocket for three days. Literally every day, I encountered a similar scene. I’d find myself in a situation where someone needed a wrench. It was actually comical for people to say: “I need a wrench,” and out of my pocket a wrench appeared. I even got a call one day on my cell asking to borrow
my wrench. Word had spread that I was the wrench guy. While turning wrenches was tangibly rewarding, the time had come to put it down. My contribution to the mission and the organization needed to change. As I take some time to think and reflect, a few thoughts take shape: • You never know what problems you’ll stumble into. Do what you can to help • If someone really needs something, let them borrow it…or have it permanently. • There is absolutely goodness in “leadership” doing the dirty work, whether that’s turning wrenches, sweeping floors, or emptying the trash. No one is above what needs to be done. • But there is a time and a place. That time and place should be dictated by two simple questions: 1) what is your role, and 2) how does that role provide value to the mission and the organization? • While I could certainly add value by continuing to turn wrenches, my role and real value was in thinking, organizing, planning, and leading. I still have the wrench. But instead of in my pocket, it’s on my desk…available to anyone who needs to borrow it.

October 1, 2021 AVDET 21-4 from Page 1 members conducted more than 260 paratroopers drops, two Polish zodiac boat water drops, and a humvee drop over six drop zones. Altogether, over 55,000 pounds of equipment were dropped, and over 2500 training events were accomplished, according to Wood. “When we do things like AvDet 21-4 we’re not just operating within our squadron like we are used to,” said Wood. “Instead we come out here and have an entire maintenance compliment, 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs, 435th Contingency Response Group, 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron and many others. This essentially gives us a miniature wing to operate.” The 435th CRG provided operational guidance to Polish special forces members during AvDet 21-4 as they demonstrated their ability to open an airfield, offload assets and prepare a rapid and safe departure of aircraft. “The Polish have consistently increased their capabilities as these rotations have occurred,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. James Supernault, 435th CRG air traffic controller “Every time we come out here we incorporate and cooperate with the Polish more and more, this time around they’re dropping their people, their equipment and using their aircraft.” In addition to the 435th CRG
contributions, the 86th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron assisted in a myriad of operations during the exercise “Our job is to come out here and generate aircraft for our operators,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Michael Clark, 86th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron production superintendent. “We are responsible to ensure these aircraft are safe to fly for our aircrew.” The 86th AMXS worked around the clock ensuring repairs were being made and operations were running smoothly, said Clark. “My most memorable experience is seeing our maintenance team generate aircraft and work with our operators and come together as a full team,” said Clark. “Even working with the Polish Air Force, it has just been ‘one team, one fight’ the whole time.” Aviation Detachment Rotations are annual events that have occurred across the U.S. European Command area of responsibility. U.S. aircraft and Airmen have participated in these rotations since 2012. “Working with the Polish has been incredible, they have been extremely professional and capable,” said Wood. “There’s a lot of interoperability that gets done outside of exercises like this one, but this is when we really get to showcase our capabilities and the capabilities of our partners and allies.”

Airframe, powerplant certification program coming to Ramstein
Airmen assigned to Ramstein Air Base stand by a Cessna 172 Skyhawk trainer aircraft with the pilots who flew it to RAB, Sept. 17. The Skyhawk was purchased to support an upcoming Airframe and Powerplant certification program at Ramstein that will earn maintainers a lifetime license as an aircraft mechanic.
Story and photos by Airman Jared Lovett 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs A Cessna 172 Skyhawk trainer aircraft marshals in the arrival of a program which will benefit all interested joint-service members at Ramstein Air Base, Sept. 17. Within the past year, the 86th Maintenance Group has been working to set up an Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) certification program on base that will enhance the skillset of Airmen.
“With an A&P license, we’re building that multi-capable Airman and allowing our folks to be better, more agile maintainers,” said U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Clifford Thebodeau, 86 AMXS superintendent. The A&P license shows that a person has the knowledge and skillset to inspect, maintain and repair an aircraft. To be eligible to participate in the program requires service members to provide proof of aviation experience and complete a written exam.
“From start to finish, it’s going to be about a two-week process,” said Master Sgt. Jaime Febus, 86 AMXS production superintendent. “The first week we are going to provide practical hands-on training. They’ll be taught skills such as shooting rivets, operating a torch, bending metal, repairing blades, a lot of things you can’t learn from reading a book.” Febus went on to say that the second week is going to be available for them to study, then they’ll be evaluated by the
Designated Mechanic Examiner which takes anywhere from eight to 12 hours. A base facility houses the Cessna 172, tools and equipment that will be used for service members to be evaluated by the DME and earn their license. “Our goal is to not only prepare service members for their oral and practical exams, we also want to make it more convenient to test here at Ramstein,” Febus said. Prior to the efforts of leadership bringing this program to
Ramstein, Airmen had to go to the continental United States to obtain their A&P license. “Approximately five to seven thousand dollars is what the Airmen were incurring before Master Sgt. Febus and his team developed this regionalized program so that it is no longer out of pocket for them, it’s right here in Ramstein,” Thebodeau said. The A&P certification program will enhance the skill set of Airmen who keep aircraft flying and the mission going.

the United States, Great Britain and France in the West and the Soviet Union in the East of the country. The Federal Republic of Germany, commonly referred to as West Germany, was established on May 23, 1949, with Bonn being the provisional capital. The foundation of the German Democratic Republic, often called East Germany, followed later that year on Oct. 7.
West Germany was comprised of 11 individual states and quickly prospered with an open market economic system. East Germany, with its five states, relied on a planned and government directed economy under Soviet rule. Although they shared a common history, the people of Germany lived in a divided nation for the next forty years. Families were torn apart, some living in the West and other family members being restricted from leaving East Germany. Up to 2.5 million East Germans secretly fled Soviet rule to seek freedom and build new lives in the West. The city of Berlin was also divided into four sectors and on Aug. 13, 1961, East German authorities began erect-

ing a barrier around the western part of the city (West Berlin), engulfing the Brandenburger Tor (gate). The Brandenburg gate quickly became a symbol of the nation’s division. At first it was merely a barbed wire fence guarded by the East German national army, but over the years it grew to a total length of 75 miles of concrete blocks, up to 15 feet tall, topped with barbed wire, surrounding West Berlin and also dividing the city straight through the middle. In many instances the structure was erected as a double wall with a “death strip” of 100 yards in between the rows of blocks. as an entry point between the Soviet and American sectors. As many as 140 people are said to have lost their lives attempting to flee East Berlin. At the same time, further walls were erected between the East and West German borders and only three transit routes allowed for vehicle travel to Berlin, which was located in the middle of the German Democratic Republic. By the late 1980s, East Germans became iancreasingly discontent with the overall political situation, government directed economic mismanagement, little to no personal freedom and strict travel restrictions. In a series of peaceful “Monday demonstrations” in Leipzig and other major cities over months, the protestors vividly chanted “Wir sind das Volk!” (We are the people), eventually forcing the government to back down and surprisingly announce the opening of the border on the evening of Nov. 9, 1989. The overwhelmed guards at Bornholmer Strasse near Brandenburg Gate let East Berliners through without checking identities. The news spread like a wildfire and West Berliners greeted their Eastern counterparts in a warm welcome with champagne and flowers. After eleven months of negotiations between the two states, the reunification was formally completed in 1990 and Oct. 3 was declared as a German national holiday to celebrate the occasion. Berlin again became the capital of all 16 states. Anniversary events take place every year in rotating cities throughout Germany. One original block of the Berlin Wall was recently moved to the traffic circle at the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center on Ramstein Air Base. The section of the wall was preserved and set in place by Airmen from the 86th Civil Engineer Group.

Ramstein, ROB administer COVID-19 vaccines to evacuees Story and photos by Airman Jared Lovett 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Approximately 3,600 doses of the Janssen COVID-19 vaccine were administered to Afghan evacuees at Ramstein Air Base and Rhine Ordnance Barracks, Sept. 26. The mass administering of the COVID-19 vaccine was provided to evacuees in an effort to prevent the spread of the disease while transiting through Ramstein. “This is being done out of an abundance of caution,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Jaime Rojas, 86th Medical Group chief of aerospace medicine. “We are in a transition area where we have evacuees for the next 14 to 21 days. Giving this level of protection to them will help them on their way forward.” This will not only provide protection for the evacuees, but also for anyone they come in contact with as they move on to other transient locations. “We want to make sure as a public health entity that the people going to the United States are going to be vaccinated for COVID, for their protection and also for the

Military family helps evacuees transition to new life by Senior Airman Branden Rae 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs A mother walks into an empty house mid-morning, after working all night. She notices the pile of dirty dishes is a little bigger than it was yesterday. She realizes she’s missing her kids’ first day of school. Later that evening, a father picks up his kids after their first day of school after a 12-hour shift. They ask him what’s for dinner: leftovers again. For the Nguyen family, this has been their reality during the past few weeks while assisting evacuation operations at Ramstein Air Base. U.S. Air Force Major Duy Nguyen, 86th Dental Squadron orthodontist, and his wife, Faiza Nguyen, civilian, have both been working long hours to support the mission while still caring for their family. Nguyen serves as the 86th Medical Group crisis action team chief, while his wife translates for and communicate with the evacuees. Nguyen is responsible for coordinating health-related evacuee concerns with base leadership. He is uniquely prepared to aid the evacuees since Vietnamese refugee himself. As such, he has helped leadership understand the concerns of the evacuation operation. “I felt like I needed to show up for evacuee families,” Nguyen said. “They are coming into the United States seeking a better future and more security for their families. It is now my opportunity to give back.” He was not the only one in his family who felt the need to help. Faiza also shares a need to help and contributed by being the only female translator — the only one for the first five days of the evacuation operation here. Originally from Pakistan, she empathizes with the families, just like her husband. “These are my brothers and sisters, coming from a very close neighboring country,” Faiza said. “The linguist team was looking for somebody who would represent the culture and know the religion. I knew that I needed to show up.” Working long hours, the pair rarely saw each other. When they did, the power couple passed each other information relating to the operations and how to improve conditions when they actually did see each other. “When she would come home, we would have a quick handoff,” Nguyen said. “She gives me the on-the-ground information about

These changes happened overnight for the Nguyen family and many others within the area. “One day we were just stay-
so the children’s lives wouldn’t be impacted too much. “We would like to say thank you to all our friends that stepped in and to our neighbors when they saw we were in need,” Nguyen said. “We are so thankful for the support system that we have here. The whole Nguyen family each helped in their own way. The kids also participated by donating clothes and toys, helping with chores, or helping sanitize baby bottles. More than that, the family leaned on their community to help them help with daily routines

Donations redirected to other bases by Airman 1st Class Alexcia Givens 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
Donations which poured in to support the Afghan evacuation efforts at Ramstein Air Base continue to benefit evacuees outside the installation. Donations have been redirected from Ramstein to other bases during the Afghan evacuation operation. A total of 34,000 clothing kits were made and delivered to six pod populations, primarily at nearby Rhine Ordnance Barracks. One pallet of donations will go to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Additional pallets are being put together which include lost or unattended luggage belonging to evacuees now in the U.S. “The Ramstein community was so generous donating items for the evacuees,” said Senior Master Sgt. Timothy Okkerse, 724th Air Mobility Squadron transportation chief. “They donated an abundance of stuff from blankets and chil-
dren’s clothes to women’s health items. We had more than we needed, so we were able to vector this to the United States.” The donations are critical to making sure that evacuees can sustain themselves as evacuees work through their transition to their next location. Flexibility has been necessary throughout this operation. Due to a small number of stateside measles cases among newly arrived evacuees from Afghanistan, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention mandated a brief pause in outbound flights until medical personnel distribute vaccines. Donations are being redistributed to current communities to accommodate evacuees. Complete clothing sets will be distributed, including sweatpants, sweatshirts, underwear, shoes, socks and jackets to the 5,000 adult evacuees to help with their current needs. “After learning of the retention of our population, we walked all of the assembled pallets, identified
which ones we had stacked and pulled four of them back,” said Maj. Kevin Rasmussen, 86th Dental Squadron chief of oral and maxillofacial surgery. The base’s 2,500 volunteers collected more than $1.3 million in donations weighing over 110 tons during this operation. “These are the people that helped us for over 20 years in Afghanistan and we’ve got to take care of them and give them a soft landing when they get to the states,” said Okkerse. “It’s important that they have basic humanitarian supplies.”

21 TSC Female Engagement Team is here to help during Operation Allies Welcome
Capt. Emily Copple, 23rd Modular Ordnance Ammunition Company Commander, 18th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, leads the Operation Allies Welcome Female Engagement Team made up of Soldiers from the 18th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 16th Sustainment Brigade and 39th Transportation Battalion, 21st Theater Sustainment Command. The FET ensures a female Soldier presence at the temporary housing facilities at Rhine Ordnance Barracks and Ramstein Air Force Base for Afghan travelers at all times, helping to bridge cultural gaps and provide a supportive environment for men and women.
by Eleanor Prohaska 21st Theater Sustainment Command Capt. Emily Copple, 23rd Modular Ordnance Ammunition Company Commander, 18th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, knows how to navigate delicate situations. As an explosive ordnance disposal officer, she is skilled in neutralizing explosive weapons and creating a safer environment. She does the same thing with people. For the past three weeks she has commanded the Female Engagement Team organized to support Operation Allies Refuge and Operation Allies Welcome at Ramstein Air Force Base and Rhine Ordnance Barracks in Kaiserslautern. She assumed the post well-prepared, having previously worked alongside female
Afghanistan police officers when she was with 49th Ordnance Company. FET members traditionally go through six months of training to hone language, interpersonal and communication skills, as well as gain experience in key leader engagement. Their mission usually includes intelligence gathering. However, that is not the case during Operation Allies Welcome. The dozens of female Soldiers on the OAW FET in Germany are from the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, specifically, the 18th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 16th Sustainment Brigade and 39th Transportation Battalion. They bring a variety of highly valued skills and experiences to the team, but no formal FET training. However, this has not
hampered their ability to complete their mission. “We are not intelligence gathering,” said Copple. “We are trying to bridge that cultural gap, to make the women more comfortable.” As evacuees, Afghan women travelers are adapting to new surroundings and people, and may also be concerned about loved ones in Afghanistan. Cultural and language differences also create opportunities for misunderstandings or unease. “For example, if a female falls down and a male Soldier goes to help her up, it could make her uncomfortable,” said Copple. She says the FET ensures there are female Soldiers present as much as possible, and they do regular “presence patrols” in the female areas to ensure no males are where they are not supposed to be.
“Our goal is to just be there for them [the women],” said Copple. The FET has focused on patrols, helping distribute clothing and food, and supporting the women however they can. “One of my Soldiers held a two to three month old baby while the mother picked out clothes,” said Copple. “I thought it was incredible that she trusted that female Soldier to hold her child.” Copple shared how little girls gave FET Soldiers henna tattoos to thank them for staying with them throughout the night. “My Soldiers have done so well,” she said.

She added that the FET is not the only source of female Soldiers on site. “Everywhere I look, there are female Soldiers stepping up,” said Copple. “There are female medics, a chaplain’s assistant,” she cited as examples. Copple said supporting OAR and OAW has been a rewarding experience, as she is passionate about helping the Afghanistan people and empowering women. She appreciates the challenges they face. “What they are fleeing from is really tragic,” she said. “They are leaving with only with what’s on their back. I’m really proud to be a part of history and helping out with this humanitarian crisis with all of my Soldiers.” She says keeping the peace and maintaining a safe and civil environment is easier when she and the FET have earned both the men and women travelers’ trust. “When they see me, they know I am there to help them as much as possible,” she said. An Afghanistan man quoted in the Commander’s Guide to Female Engagement Teams summed up the power of FETs to build trust and maintain peace. “Your men come to fight, but we know the women are here to help.”

Myths, facts about the vax — debunking common COVID-19 vaccine myths by Air Force Surgeon General Congressional and Public Affairs The COVID-19 vaccine has been mandated across the Department of Defense and despite its demonstrated effectiveness and safety, a host of myths have left some Airmen and Guardians hesitant to receive it. While social media posts and some news outlets may make it harder to keep up with what is fact or fiction, the science is clear … approved COVID-19 vaccines work. Here is a breakdown of the most common myths surrounding COVID19 vaccines, and the facts behind each myth: Myth: COMIRNATY is not the same as the PFIZER-BIONTECH COVID-19 vaccine. Truth: It is common for vaccine names to change after receiving full Food and Drug Administration approval for branding purposes. COMIRNATY and Pfizer-BioNTech are biologically and chemically the same vaccine. The FDA approved PfizerBioNTech for licensing and branding as COMIRNATY August 23 for people 16 years and older. Critically, the Emergency Use Authorization for Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine continues and covers the 12-15 year old population. In accordance with FDA guidance, COMIRNATY has the same formulation and can be used interchangeably with the FDA-authorized PfizerBioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. Providers can use doses distributed under the EUA, to administer the vaccination series as if the doses were the licensed vaccine. Myth: There were no people of color involved or represented in the research or development of the vaccine. Truth: COVID-19 has taken a heavy and disproportionate toll on people of color, particularly Black adults. Historically, people of color have been underrepresented in clinical trials. Therefore, ensuring racial and ethnic diversity in clinical trials for development of COVID-19 vaccines has been particularly important. Diversity within clinical trials for a COVID-19 vaccine also ensures safety and effectiveness across populations. Findings show that Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine safety and efficacy were similar for people of color and white participants. The FDA offered nonbinding recommendations that strongly encouraged the enrollment of populations most affected by COVID-19, specifically racial and ethnic minorities. Both Pfizer and Moderna worked to ensure that people of color were included in their trials, with Moderna even slowing down enrollment to enroll more racial
and ethnic minorities. There have also been efforts on the community side. Historically Black colleges and universities participated in COVID-19 vaccine trials and encouraged participation among their communities. The purposeful encouragement to increase racial and ethnic groups in these trials have achieved greater diversity than many previous trials for other drugs. Myth: The COVID-19 vaccine can cause problems with breast tissue and lead to breast cancer. Truth: There is no evidence that COVID-19 vaccines cause problems with breast tissue or would lead to breast cancer. The mRNA vaccines are processed by your body near the injection site and activate immune system cells that then travel through the lymph system to nearby lymph nodes. In this manner, an individual may experience swelling under the arm where the vaccine was administered due to swelling of the lymph node. The vaccines are not affecting hormone levels, nor are they traveling throughout the body or affecting other body organs, such as breast tissue. Swollen lymph nodes can show up in a mammogram even if women can't feel them. Hence, the Society of Breast Imaging recommends women delay any routine mammography scheduled within four weeks after their most recent COVID-19 vaccination. Myth: If I take COMIRNATY while breastfeeding, my baby will be infected with COVID-19. Truth: COVID-19 vaccines cannot cause infection in anyone. Vaccines are effective at preventing COVID19 in people who are breastfeeding. Additionally, breastfeeding people who have received mRNA COVID-19 vaccines have antibodies in their breast milk, which could help protect their babies. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine recommend that lactating women receive the vaccine and that breastfeeding should not be stopped around the period of vaccination. Myth: COVID-19 causes infertility. Truth: There is no evidence that COVID-19 vaccines cause fertility problems in women or men. The mRNA vaccines are processed by your body near the injection site and activate immune system cells that then travel through the lymph system to nearby lymph nodes. In this manner, they are not affecting hormone levels, nor are they traveling throughout the body or affecting other body organs. Myth: The Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System proves that COVID19 vaccination causes too many side effects and deaths.
Truth: VAERS data alone cannot determine if an adverse event was caused by a COVID-19 vaccination. Anyone can report individual events to VAERS, even if it is not clear whether a vaccine caused the problem. These events are studied by vaccine safety experts who track for trends, then validate significant adverse concerns. Recently, the number of deaths reported in VAERS has been misinterpreted and misreported as if this number means deaths were proven to be caused by COVID-19 vaccination. Myth: COMIRNATY vaccine contains fetal cells. Truth: None of the COVID-19 vaccines contain fetal cells. Specifically, COMIRNATY and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines did not use a fetal cell line to manufacture their vaccine. However, a fetal cell line was used in early research efficacy of these vaccines. The use of these fetal cell lines in research and/or production of vaccines and medication is not new. Some over-the-counter medications for which a historic fetal cell line was utilized in research and/or production and manufacturing include: Tylenol, Pepto Bismol, Aspirin, Tums, Senokot, Motrin, Maalox, Ex-Lax, Benadryl, Sudafed, Preparation H, Claritin, and others. Myth: Researchers rushed the development of the COVID-19 vaccine, so its effectiveness and safety cannot be trusted. Truth: The COVID-19 vaccines in the U.S. have gone through the typical FDA approval process — no steps were skipped — but some steps were conducted on an overlapping schedule to gather data faster. First, the COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna were created with a method that has been in development for years, so the companies could start the vaccine development process early in the pandemic. Second, vaccine projects received large resources. Governments invested in research and/or paid for vaccines in advance, which enabled a faster approach. Third, some types of COVID19 vaccines were created using messenger RNA (mRNA), which allows a faster approach than the traditional way that vaccines are made. Fourth, the capabilities of social media reaching numerous people enabled companies to find and engage study volunteers at a faster than typical pace. Finally, COVID-19 is so contagious and widespread, therefore it did not take long to see if the vaccine worked for the study volunteers who were vaccinated. Myth: If I get the COVID-19 vaccine, it will make me sick with COVID-19. Truth: You cannot get COVID-
19 disease from the COVID-19 vaccine. COVID-19 vaccines teach our immune systems how to recognize and fight the virus that causes COVID19. Sometimes this process can cause symptoms, such as fever. These symptoms are normal and are signs that the body is building protection against the virus that causes COVID-19. If you do not have side effects, that does not mean your body’s immune system is not responding. Myth: COVID-19 vaccines shed or release their components and are harmful. Truth: Vaccine shedding is the term used to describe the release or discharge of any of the vaccine components in or outside of the body. Vaccine shedding can only occur when a vaccine contains a weakened live version of the virus. None of the COVID-19 vaccines authorized for use in the U.S. contain a live virus. Myth: COVID-19 vaccine will alter my DNA. Truth: COVID-19 vaccines do not change or interact with DNA in any way. Both mRNA and viral vector COVID-19 vaccines deliver instructions (genetic material) to our cells to start building protection against the virus that causes COVID-19. However,
the material never enters the nucleus of the cell, which is where our DNA resides. Myth: Receiving the COVID-19 vaccine will make me magnetic. Truth: All COVID-19 vaccines are free from metals and will not make anyone magnetic. None of the COVID19 vaccines contain eggs, gelatin, latex, or preservatives. Myth: The COVID-19 vaccine contains microchips. Truth: COVID-19 vaccines do not contain manufactured electronic or microchips. Vaccines are developed to fight against disease and are not administered to track your movement. Vaccines work by stimulating your immune system to produce antibodies. After getting vaccinated, you develop immunity to that disease, without having to get the disease first. Airmen, Guardians and family members who still have questions and concerns are encouraged to reach out to their primary care provider. Additional information, including the DoD mandate, can be found at https://www.defense. gov/Spotlights/Coronavirus-DODResponse/.

ther isolation. Extra time with your child shows that you are genuinely concerned with his/her emotional well-being. Be compassionate. Validate your child’s pain or suffering while communicating your value of preserving life. Let them know that you will support them and love them despite their having thoughts of death or self-harm. Refrain from guilt statements—“Don’t you know how much this will hurt me?” or “But you have so much to live for”—as these might decrease communication with your child. Trust your judgment. If your child denies having suicidal thoughts, but your “gut instinct” suggests otherwise, trust your intuition and take further steps to ensure safety. Prioritize safety. For all serious concerns, go with adage, “Safety First.” Remove access to any means of self-harm (most importantly, weapons), ensure that your child is not left alone, and make immediate contact with a professional to further evaluate for safety concerns (e.g. Emergency Department, Mental Health Clinic). Did you know that in the past two decades, suicide among youth has increased throughout the United States? Did you know that it is the second leading cause of death among persons 15-19 years in the United States, just after accidents? And that rates doubled for youth between 10-14 years from 2007 to 2014? Did you know that suicide risk is four times higher among youth who identify as LGBTQ+? Did you know that Emergency Department visits among youth for suicidal ideation or attempts increased during the COVID-19 pandemic? Finally, did you know that suicide is preventable? That suicide prevention is a community effort—
much like the proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child” proverb.” Suicide prevention requires the awareness and participation of all those who mentor our youth, not just parents/families. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cite seven strategies for suicide prevention: • Strengthen economic supports (e.g. ensure financial security for the household). • Strengthen access to and delivery of suicide care (e.g. offer education, assessment, and treatment in schools, clinics, and other community venues). • Create protective environments (e.g. reduce access to lethal means of self-harm by locking up and securing weapons). • Promote connectedness (e.g. involve youth in community activities and programs; create

SICILY from Page 1 go on and on…. But how do you get there? Most people would fly to Sicily, and possibly rent a car. But I’m here to offer another alternative. One that makes the journey just as fun and stressfree as the destination. Take a Ferry! I drove into the Palermo ferry port three hours prior to departure and found that I was in the wrong place. However, the cordial Sicilian police officer at the gate did his best to explain where I was to go, and it worked out just fine. (to avoid my mistake below for GPS coordinates) At the correct port gate, I was directed into a line with only two other cars, my paperwork was checked, and then my son, my dog, and I waited another hour as the line behind us grew and grew. It was my first time boarding an Italian ferry and I didn’t want to get it wrong, but now I know that arriving 2 hours prior to departure, as recommended, is better. When it was my turn, I followed the helpful port staff who directed me to drive onto the ferry and down two ramps into the bowels of the ship. “Grab your overnight bag,” I told my son. “We can’t return to the car until the trip is over.” I got my own bag plus our dog in his backpack, and we headed for the stairway up to the passenger areas.
“How are we going to get out?” My son asked as more cars blocked mine like a master Tetris board. “Hopefully they show us,” I replied. And they did. Being first on the boat actually meant we ended up being last off the next afternoon, but the loaders are well-rehearsed and give great directions. I was able to 10-point turn my Outback in a space the size of my patio, and easily drive off the ferry. But, I’m getting ahead of myself. A ferry? It’s Better than Driving My son and I were at the end of a road trip from Germany to Italy and back. We stopped along the way as we drove south through Italy to see the major sites and ended in Sicily. It was long. It was chaotic. The driving was stressful. The toll and gas costs added up to airfare. I don’t recommend it. But once we got to Sicily, things were different. It was necessary to have a car on the island. We were able to keep our own pace, spending mornings driving to historical sites, afternoons at the beach, and back to our room for a nice nap before a late dinner. And we continued that holiday schedule on the ferry. After being parked on that low deck, we walked up to the reception desk on deck five and got our disposable room key card. Cabin 8038. Deck 8. The cabin felt like a cruise boat cabin with a large window,
two comfy single beds, a little desk, and a small bathroom. It was nice to have our own space to be quiet and sleep during the overnight ferry ride. We took a nap as the boat launched – it had been a long hot day of sightseeing. Ferry Perks As we returned from Sicily to northern Italy on the car ferry, I got to thinking about all the hours I had spent on Italian toll roads with white knuckles on the steering wheel. Let me just say, lesson learned. If I had to do it again, I’d take the ferry both ways and save Italy for shorter cheap-airfare trips. Taking the ferry has definite perks. It’s cheaper than driving the length of Italy and can include an overnight in a nice berth. Transportation and accommodation are all booked in one fare. It also gives you a safe way to transport your car without having to be behind the wheel.

along. Flying with a pet on vacation is not only costly but very stressful on the pet. However, a road trip is great fun for our pup Slim Jim and taking the ferry meant he could easily come along. In Sicily, he was welcome almost everywhere, too. If you travel with a pet, be sure to have their EU pet passport up to date. Available Sicily Ferry Options There are lots of ferries around Italy; here I’ll focus on car-ferries to and from Sicily from the north of Italy. There are two options, two companies, and two different ports in the northern part of Italy that regularly service Sicily with car ferries. Both options are reputable, comfortable, and safe. Both options offer daily (not Sunday) departures in each direction. To/From the Port of Genoa • Roughly a 9-hour drive from the KMC • Departs in the late evening
(usually between 2130 or 2300) and arrives the following evening • 20 hours and 30 minutes • Ferry Company: GNV, Grandi Navi Veloci. Ships: La Superba or Excellent To/From the Port of Livorno • Roughly 10.5 hours from KMC • Departs early evening (usually 1830) and arrives the following afternoon • 19 hours and 30 minutes • Ferry Company: Grimaldi Lines. Ships: Ausonia or Smerelda I chose to book with the Grimaldi lines into Livorno; primarily because the cost was lower and the timing better. Both ferry companies have two ships doing the route – all ships are very comparable with comfortable seating areas, bars, restaurants, open decks, a small pool, and cabins. It has the feel of a toned-down cruise ship.
Grimaldi The ferry also saves time. During our car trip, it usually took us 40% longer than my mapping app estimated. There is simply a lot of traffic, construction, slowdowns, and even burning trucks on the side of the road in Italy. Driving is slow going. Instead, you could be on a ferry overnight; gaining ground while you sleep counts as a super perk. Lastly, and for us this was extremely important, it meant we could still bring our dog
