U.S. Airmen assigned to the 934th Airlift Wing out of Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota, take off in a C-130H Hercules Oct. 16 from Powidz Air Base, Poland, during the latest iteration of Operation Atlantic Resolve. The NATO-led exercise prepares U.S. and Polish Airmen to work together in order to increase interoperability and enhance regional security.

Flight Commanders Course prepares young officers for leadership

Capt. Justin Klawitter, 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing Cyberspace Operations chief, speaks to company grade officers during the Flight Commander and Officer in Charge Leadership Development Course Oct. 16 on Ramstein Air Base. The course is designed to prepare young officers for their new roles and responsibilities as Air Force leaders.

The 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing hosted a three-day Flight Commander and Officer in Charge Leadership Development Course to prepare young officers from the 521st AMOW, the 86th Airlift Wing and the 435 Air Ground Operations Wing for their new roles and responsibilities Oct. 16 to 18. New commissioned officers often take on leadership roles where they are responsible for an entire section of their squadron. Commonly, enlisted Airmen make up the majority of these flights. While officers do receive training for basic leadership skills and specific training for their respective jobs, the Flight Commanders Course dives deeper and focuses on critical

leadership knowledge and leadership philosophy. “Lt. Col. Vandevere and I took a practical approach to this course,” said Capt. Justin Klawitter, 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing Cyberspace Operations chief. “In addition to covering the leadership development curriculum provided by Air Mobility Command, we coordinated supporting base agencies to give an overview of the services available to Airmen. We also had squadron commanders’ and first sergeants’ panels, and asked other former and current senior enlisted leaders to provide their perspectives on how to best take care of and grow Airmen.” The course kicked off with a video of Gen. Carlton D. Everhart II, Air Mobility Command commander, giving an introductory speech for the students.

“As General Everhart pointed out in the welcome video, people are our most valuable weapon system, and it’s important for leaders to create an environment where Airmen can develop and grow,” said Klawitter. “This additional expectation is levied on those officers selected for flight commander and officer in charge roles so it’s important for them to hone their ability to do just that.” Students found the training to be insightful. “In just three days, I think we all gained significant mentoring, concrete skills and methods, knowledge of resources, and were challenged to think deeply about our roles as future commanders and leaders,” said Capt. Carrie Serjeant, 86th Medical Group executive officer and Flight Commanders Course student. “We covered a lot of practical information such as financial management,

commander’s responsibilities, and the enlisted promotion system. But more importantly, we got to delve into critical thinking related to leadership, decision-making, and selfdevelopment as officers.” Serjeant said the course gave her a better understanding of the impact she can have as a flight commander or OIC. “I think we were encouraged to view leadership as an active, deliberate process; being present for those we lead, actively seeking feedback, and developing Airmen,” she said. The Flight Commanders Course will continue to train and develop young officers into leadership roles. “I hope that similar courses will be developed and offered in the future,” said Serjeant. “Having the opportunity to hear squadron and wing-level leadership perspectives in an open, candid environment was awesome.”

Heart Link takes to the skies Story and photos by Senior Airman Tryphena Mayhugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs For many military spouses, moving to a new area can present a number of challenges. In an effort to mitigate some of these obstacles, the Ramstein Airman and Family Readiness Center hosted its Heart Link program Sept. 28, which was geared towards information and networking opportunities for military spouses. As an extension of that program, spouses who had participated in the event were able to take an incentive flight on a C-130J Super Hercules Oct. 17. “The flight was fantastic,” said Erin Heartless, Heart Link participant and Ramstein mili-

tary spouse. “It was a beautiful day, a great crowd and the flight crew was amazing. Flying at such a low altitude, I don’t think very many of us are used to that, so being able to see that and the smoothness of the flight was a pleasant surprise.” The C-130 was flown and manned by pilots and loadmasters from the 37th Airlift Squadron. During the hourlong flight, the spouses were able to visit the flight deck and move around the aircraft to take pictures or ask the crew questions, except for when the ramp door was lowered. At that time, all the participants were required to remain seated with their seatbelts on but could look out the back as the two loadmasters took photos for them on the spouses’ phones.

“I thought the flight went really well,” said Airman 1st Class Benjamin McElwain, 37th AS loadmaster. “Everyone seemed to have a lot of fun, asked a lot of questions and we got to open the ramp in-flight. The look on their faces looking out the window during take-off and landing is the same look I had during my first in-flight, so that was really cool. I really enjoyed it, getting to show off what I and the pilots do.” The target audience for Heart Link is military spouses who have been married for five years or less, but it is a free event for any spouse who is interested. “The Heart Link program was different than we expected. It was great,” said Jessica Menasco, Heart Link participant and Ramstein mili-

Allied Air Command holds NATO Air Chiefs’ Symposium

welcomed the air chiefs and senior enlisted leaders and presented his perspectives on the current security environment and NATO’s strategic shift from assurance to deterrence.

“Air and space power remains one of NATO’s asymmetric advantages, and our unmatched responsiveness and flexibility are available 365, 24/7 to counter any emerging threats to the

alliance” Wolters said. “We are leading agents of deterrence and defense; this is a very powerful position that promotes peace among our continents.” After a strategic context update and a ‘Tour d’horizon’ delivered by Mercier, discussions included: “Current Environment,” “Adapting For the Changing Environment” and “Focus on Future Capabilities.” Topics covered air contributions to enhanced forward presence, the counter Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant mission and a discussion of modern aircraft integration in NATO. Leading the integration of existing and evolutionary fifth-generation platforms will expand NATO’s ability to exploit and dominate the air domain. Wolters stressed the importance of the discussions generated by the NATO Air Chiefs’ Symposium. “The discussions we share daily and then collectively within this forum ensure that together our commitment will allow us to continue to successfully execute our mission on behalf of our great alliance,” Wolters said.

For this particular iteration, pilots are practicing formation inter-flying, where aircraft of different models fly in a single formation. While this sounds simple enough, the reality is much more difficult, Hansen said. “We’re operating with models of the C-130, which are much older,” Hansen said. “The ‘H’ model (operated by the reserves) and the ‘E’ model, which the Polish operate, are vastly different in a lot of regards, so actually operating with them, flying with them, talking with them is something a lot of us haven’t had the opportunity to experience.” For two weeks, 86th Airlift Wing Airmen will train alongside their reserve brethren and some new Polish brothers and sisters.

Chaired by the commander of Allied Air Command, Gen. Tod D. Wolters, the semi-annual forum was held to discuss joint and air domain issues. The event also brought together the Supreme Allied Commander Transformation, General Denis Mercier and air chiefs from five partner nations. Additionally, for the first time, the air chief from NATO’s 29th member, Montenegro, took part in the two-day symposium. To provide context to the discussions, the air chiefs met on Oct. 16 to attend informational multi-media presentations, a NATO Allied Air Command mission brief, and tours of the operations and situation centers as well as a NATO E-3A AWACS aircraft. In opening the symposium, Wolters ATLANTIC RESOLVE, from Page 1

934th Airlift Wing, out of MinneapolisSt. Paul, Minnesota, brought their C-130s as well. “We’re working with our partner nation allies to bring our own tactics and procedures together to meld them into one,” Hansen said. “Since we speak different tactical languages and some of our procedures are slightly different, opportunities like this are very important so that we can get everything hashed out and gain that experience between our communities.” While training with the Polish, 37th AS pilots and loadmasters practiced tactics they wouldn’t normally have the chance to practice.

Pillowcase project helps KMC youth put fears to bed by Airman 1st Class Milton Hamilton Jr. 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Volunteers prepare to train Kaiserslautern Military Community children for the Red Cross’s Pillowcase Project beginning in January on Ramstein Air Base. The Red Cross’ Pillowcase Project is a free disaster preparedness program for third- through fifth-graders. “The Pillowcase Project has been around for four years, but this is the first year that it is being implemented in the overseas military communities,” said Christine Spalding, Red Cross division volunteer partner. This project is the first step for the Red Cross to start getting kids involved in disaster preparedness. “The Pillowcase Project began in New Orleans during hurricane Katrina after the Red Cross region president noticed that college students, whom were only allowed one small bag during the evacuation, were leaving with their necessities in pillow cases,” Spalding said. According to Spalding, the region president thought a pillow, something everyone has in their home, was a great tool to use to educate children on disaster preparedness.

The Red Cross then partnered with a large corporation to fund the idea and start the training. “Depending on where you are in the world, the training is more centered on certain specific disasters,” Spalding said. “The training could range from wildfire to flood or hurricane preparedness.” In Germany, this project concentrates more on fire safety, since hurricanes and other natural disasters aren’t too prevalent in the area. “KMC children are scheduled to learn how to check doors to make sure there isn’t a fire on the other side, how to get low and how to make a map of the house, so they’ll have an escape route as well as learn the differences between wants and needs, during emergency situations,” Spalding said. “We also teach our kids how to manage stress in a crisis,” Spalding said. “The stress management skills we teach translate well for school and at home, allowing kids to think more rationally.” Last year in the United States, approximately 260,000 kids were trained by the Pillowcase Project, Spalding said. “The goal for our European division is to train at least 2,500 kids,” Spalding said. “I feel we will surpass our initial

goal though, because in the KMC, we have just shy of 2,000 kids.” The Red Cross is currently training volunteers to teach the upcoming January and February Pillowcase classes. Volunteers need to be at least 18 years old and be able to pass a background check. The next training

class for volunteers is scheduled for Saturday. Homeschool groups interested in hosting a presentation and volunteers interested in participating in the Pillowcase Project may call the Ramstein Red Cross office at 4802171 or 06371-47-2171 or email ramstein@redcross.org. ADVERTISEMENT

William Galbraith, 21st Theater Sustainment Command deputy commander, hosted a Retiree Appreciation Day event Oct. 18 at the Ramstein Officers’ Club. The ceremony invited all members of the Kaiserslautern Military Community to honor service members who served in the military in the past and to provide a forum of resources for retirees living in the area. The Joint Color Guard led the start of the formal event, followed by a speech from guest speaker Col. Timothy Hudson, Landstuhl Medical Regional Center commander, and was concluded by Zapata and Galbraith pinning more than 60 Vietnam veterans in the room. Retirees participated in a raffle and received service from all four of the Army dental clinics in the KMC. “I think Retiree Appreciation Day is important not only to the retirees but to their families as well,” Zapata said. “I just like everyone getting together. I like getting to spend time with these folks that have retired just to share stories and exchange experiences. The other thing is the events we have set up for retirees seem to grow in magnitude with each year. I’m really pleased to

see this increase in the service provided to our retirees.” Retirees, such as retired U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Leon Sidoruk, confirmed the importance of this event. “I was very impressed, indeed,” Sidoruk said. “The friendly atmosphere, the great reception and everyone being so kind to us was nice to see. Sometimes retirees can feel for-

gotten, but this made us feel really appreciated.” The Joint Color Guard ceremony and both national anthems, sang by a U.S. Air Forces in Europe Band performer, were well received by members of the audience. “Hearing the German national anthem and our national anthem was beautiful and, you know, when you see our colors, you feel the great

sense of pride,” Sidoruk said. Sidoruk looks forward to next year’s Retiree Appreciation Day and expressed gratitude for the continued support the Kaiserslautern Military Community shows for its retirees. “I feel at home,” Sidoruk said. “For 45 years of my life I’ve been a part of the U.S. Air Force. This base is my home and these people are my family.”

civilian employees and families and the selfless, generous hospitality for the many Americans in the greater Kaiserslautern region,” Igyarto said. To emphasize that theme and play on the language, the commander presented a gift to Kaiserslautern Mayor

Dr. Susanne Wimmer-Leonhardt — a “Cymbal of Friendship,” using the musical accouterment with an appreciation engraved upon it. Wimmer-Leonhardt was in-tune with the commander’s sentiment. “It is a great honor for us to wel-

come the United States Army Band and Chorus here in Kaiserslautern,” Wimmer-Leonhardt said. “This event has become a real highlight in our event calendar, and I am happy to see such a great turnout again this year.” In the 70 years that the armed forces have been in the Kaiserslautern area, many friendships have formed, she said, and Germany and the United States have grown together in a very special way here in the Western Palatinate, which has shaped the region and made it a unique place to work and live. “We are very appreciative of you and would like to emphasize that we are very thankful for your presence here,” the mayor added. “This appreciation is mutual, as I have come to learn during our many encounters. All the better that we can share this appreciation at the German-American Friendship Concert each year.” Lastly, the USAG RP commander said, “This concert celebrates the relationships we’ve developed throughout the years and gives us a chance to interact as friends and neighbors. We look forward to continuing our partnership and this tradition symbolized by ‘Friendship through Music.’”

TODAY: STUFFED RED PEPPERS

Photo by Africa Studio / Shutterstock.com

Ingredients

(for 4 people) 4 pointed peppers, red 8 shallots 2 garlic cloves ½ cup chopped parsley 4 stalks marjoram 1 pound hamburger meat 2 eggs Salt and pepper for seasoning ¼ teaspoon sweet paprika powder 3 tablespoons bread crumbs 1 pound chanterelles 3-4 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 – 1 ½ cup vegetable broth 2 containers heavy cream (less than 2 cups) Staff Sgt. Yannick Sharras, 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron aeromedical evacuation technician, looks back at his “captors” during survival, evasion, resistance, escape field training exercise Oct. 18 at U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz. The exercise included the members camouflaging themselves to avoid being detected by any hostile forces in the area.

Fire prevention

Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Wash peppers and cut in half. Remove seeds. Finely dice 2 of the shallots and garlic and chop herbs.

In a bowl, place hamburger meat, 50% of herbs, garlic, eggs, bread crumbs, finely diced shallots, salt, pepper, and paprika. Mix well. Season the peppers on the inside with salt and pepper. Divide beef into all the peppers. Peel the remaining shallots and cut in half. Then cut each half in 4 wedges. Wash chanterelles to remove all dirt. (If they are very dirty, add 1-2 tablespoons of flour to the water you are washing them in - It makes removing the dirt much easier. Then strain and let dry.) Heat oil in oven-proof pan. Add shallot wedges and chanterelles. Let simmer for 3 - 4 minutes. Add 1 cup of broth. Add the remaining herbs, and stuffed peppers and bring to boil. Remove from stove and place in oven for 30 minutes. After 15 minutes add ¼ cup heavy cream. Continue to add heavy cream every 5 minutes. You might have to add the rest of the broth while the pan is in the oven if the sauce is too thick. Remove from oven. Taste and reseason to match your taste. A nice side dish are mashed potatoes or baguette. A nice plate of mixed salad would also work well to add contrast flavor to the stuffed pepper. An Italian bottle of Bardolino red wine or a Montepulciano d’Abruzzo match this meal nicely. If you prefer to stay local, try a bottle of Dornfelder red wine.

Biography

Klaus learned from an early age that he had an interest in food and cooking when he started helping in his parent’s restaurant at the age of ten. He enjoyed the environment so much, that he started an apprenticeship at the Augsburger Hotel Riegele at the age of 16. Klaus has been working in hotels and restaurants ever since, including the famous Ecke Stuben in Augsburg and the Post Hotel in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Throughout his career he has been cooking traditional German and international dishes and found his love for crossover cuisine. Many of the recipes Klaus presents are his own crossover creations, which he is happy to share with you. Klaus has been offering private cooking classes for around three years now for groups up to eight people, either in your own home or in Klaus’ kitchen in the KMC, for slow food enjoyment with family and friends.

In the Oct. 13 edition, the KA published a series of photos demonstrating fire prevention methods. One of the photos and captions relayed that flour could be used to extinguish a kitchen fire. Fire prevention officers say that flour is a combustible substance and should not be used to put out fires. Instead people should use baking soda and cover the pan with a lid, if the fire is small, to smother it. If the fire is large, a fire extinguisher is the recommended action.

AUSA Volunteer Family of the Year Award Story by Staff Sgt. Dee Jackson 108th Training Command (Initial Entry Training)

The Association of the United States Army Volunteer family of the Year Award recognizes volunteerism, annually highlighting a family whose efforts go above and beyond in promoting the well-being of Soldiers and their family members. This year AUSA recognized the family of Eryn Seidl, an Army Reserve civilian from the 7th Mission Support Command in Kaiserslautern. It is the first time an Army Reserve family has been selected for the award and the first time the family of an Army civilian has received the award. “It’s a great accomplishment for someone to be the family of the year for the entire United States Army, and we’re really proud that this year’s family is an Army Reserve family,” said Lt. Gen. Charles Luckey, chief of the Army Reserve and commanding general of the United States Army Reserve Command The Seidl family, headed by patriarch Sgt. 1st Class (ret.) Eryn Seidl of Kaiserslautern and his wife, Anja, have been consistently engaged in the planning, logistics, cooking and other support to the military community. “It’s awesome to be the first Army Reserve/Department of Defense civilian family to win this award,” said Anja Seidl, cultural liaison and Family

Readiness Group leader for the Army. “It doesn’t matter if you’re in the reserve, active Army, active guard reserve or civilian. We are all one family,” she said. Seidl has made volunteering a part of his life and had some advice for Army Reserve families. “Start early and start young. … Also, get your children involved so that it’s a culture they get used to,” he said. “Make sure you track your

hours, because you’ll do a lot more volunteering than you realize.” For the Seidl family, volunteering is as common as walking down the road. They have done everything from organizing a family day for a unit with 150 people to volunteering as a firefighter during 9/11 to organizing a community festival for 3,000 people, such as the pre-Halloween Trunk-orTreat festival. “The Seidl family is a great exam-

ple of how the entire team supports every single Soldier — the father, the mother to the two children and the grandmother. They’re all supported in every way and every mission,” said Julie Luckey, Army Reserve senior spouse. “We’re so appreciative of all their efforts and the efforts of all our family members.” For more information on volunteering, call (844) 663-3269 or visit www.arfp.org

Bridging 4,500 miles to lend a helping hand Story and photo illustration by Senior Airman Tryphena Mayhugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs As the 13th named storm, seventh hurricane, fourth major hurricane and second Category 5 hurricane in the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season, Hurricane Maria caused devastation across the northeast Caribbean. One of the areas hit by the tropical storm was the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico, reaching the island’s shores Sept. 20 and causing massive damage to the entire island. In order to aid relief efforts in Puerto Rico, the American Red Cross stood up a call center on Ramstein Air Base with a mission to reunify those effected by the storm. Staff Sgt. Alberto Garcia, 86th Civil Engineer Squadron lead firefighter, was born and raised in Puerto Rico, so when he heard about the Red Cross looking for volunteers, he immediately joined. “Being in the call center to answer those phone calls, it was really tough,” Garcia said. “A lot of Puerto Ricans, we get emotionally involved really easily. It was tough at the beginning for all the volunteers because we knew what they needed, but we couldn’t provide it at that point since we were miles away. It was tough answering those phone calls, but I would do it again.” More than 4,500 miles from Ramstein, Garcia’s mother, sister and his wife’s entire family live in Puerto Rico and were there when Hurricane Maria hit. “One thing that was so heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time, we had volunteers who hadn’t heard from their families on the ground, but it was so important to them they were there to help everybody and anybody, not just their family,” said Chris Spalding, Service to the Armed Forces American Red Cross European, Middle Eastern, and African Division partner. “They collectively feel we are one humankind, and we need to work together to make things better. I was so moved by our call center operations.” Garcia and his family were glad to hear their families were safe and well. Hurricane Maria took the lives of 88 people, 43 of them in Puerto Rico. After taking the first few phone calls, Garcia had to take a moment to compose himself before he could continue, as many emotions were whirling through his head. “Sadness was the biggest one, and feeling helpless at the time,” Garcia said. “You know those are your people. If you don’t know them, you probably know someone who does because Puerto Rico isn’t a big island. I think sadness and powerless would be the main two emotions I felt during the time I was (at the call center). It

Staff Sgt. Alberto Garcia, 86th Civil Engineer Squadron lead firefighter, dedicated hours of his time volunteering at the American Red Cross’ call center established on Ramstein Air Base to lend a hand to the relief efforts in Puerto Rico for victims of Hurricane Maria. Garcia was born and raised in Puerto Rico, and feeling powerless to help his mother, sister, and wife’s family who were living on the island over 4,500 miles away, he helped all those he could through the reunification mission at the call center.

was an eye-opening experience. “If you look at the 10 toughest jobs in the world, the first is a U.S. military member and the second one is a firefighter,” he continued. “So to be able to be successful at my job, I have to be resilient. Whenever I got those calls, I closed my eyes and thought about how at that moment those people needed me to answer the phone, so step back, take a deep breath, go back to the basics, do what they taught me in my resiliency training and answer the next phone call. For some people, it might be a little bit difficult, but if you never forget what you are there for and never lose focus, you should be fine.” Between the call centers, those who provided snacks at the call centers and those who deployed to Puerto Rico, the ARC had almost 1,600 volunteers give their time to help others. “I’m never surprised when the military community steps up because that’s what they do best,” Spalding said. “They are always the first to step up and answer the call, and it’s not just the active-duty members. It’s the spouses, contractors, civilian personnel and the retiree community. I’m never surprised by how wonderful the response is when we raise our hand and say we need something.

“It’s really unfortunate the Red Cross collectively does their best when someone else’s situation is absolutely the worst it could possibly be,” she continued. “We will always, especially in the military community, be there to help take care of another human being when they are in need. For me, I personally feel very positive about that, and I am so unbelievably proud of how many people have stepped up — newer volunteers, seasoned volunteers, everybody working together.” Volunteering at the Red Cross’ call center was not the first time Garcia had interacted with the organization. In 2011, his father passed away and he was impressed by how they helped him. Having experienced firsthand what the ARC offers to those in need, Garcia is working towards being in charge of the Ramstein Disaster Response Team the Red Cross wants to establish on the base. “When I went to the Red Cross to volunteer for the call center, I saw them running back and forth trying to make this operation a success. And they did that, so I saw that sense of urgency,” Garcia said. “The experience I had when my dad passed away: They contacted me, and I was on the next flight over to go home. Seeing how well the

Red Cross acts whenever they are called upon, it helped me to be a volunteer for them. I told them they have probably earned a volunteer for life from me.” Being a firefighter, Garcia knows what it’s like to help someone on one of the worst days of their life and feels if he leaves them with a smile he has done his job. He said when he was answering calls from Puerto Rico, it was the same way; if they ended that call with a smile, then he did his job. “I want to say thank you to the Red Cross for giving me the opportunity,” Garcia said. “They made me feel like part of their team. I also want to say thank you to my leadership who supported me all the way. To Puerto Rico, they will be fine if they stay together like they always do. El coqui is a small Puerto Rican frog that sings really loud, and a good friend of mine called me the other day and said no matter how destroyed the island looks, el coqui is still singing. So that’s a good sign.” Puerto Rico is still recovering from the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, but through the dedication of people like Garcia and those at the ARC, a helping hand can reach across the globe to provide support and comfort for those who have lost so much.

Otterbach sponsors Halloween fest Monday by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

This year, Otterbach will celebrate the 10th anniversary of its annual Halloween fest Monday at the village square. Since Germans observe 500 years of Protestant reformation on Oct. 31, organizers decided to celebrate Halloween a day earlier. Youth offices of the Otterbach-Otterberg union community will sponsor the

fest under the motto, “Pirates and the Water World.” Visitors will be able to enjoy a variety of activities and games, which are scheduled to start at 5 p.m. in the center of the village. First of all, there will be a costume contest for children and adults. Winners will get awarded. Visitors can also take part in a pumpkin contest and receive prizes for their creations. A campfire will be set up, and stands will be avail-

able to serve food and drink specialties. Disc jockey Wolfgang will provide musical entertainment in the children’s disco party tent. The acoustic band 7661 will perform live.

The highlight of this Halloween event will be a scary lights hike starting at 7 p.m. Participating hikers can enjoy a creepy play with elaborate light and sound installations. Organizers emphasize

that this is an artsy play for young and old guests. There won’t be any monsters, witches and ghosts touching or following the hikers. Proceeds will go to local youth projects.

Germans observe religious holidays Tuesday, Wednesday by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs This year, reformation day, which is Oct. 31, has been declared as legal holiday throughout Germany to celebrate the 500th anniversary of reformation by Martin Luther. Normally, the religious holiday for Protestants is only observed as a legal holiday in the states of Brandenburg, MecklenburgVorpommern, Saxony, SaxonyAnhalt and Thueringen. In 1517, priest Martin Luther posted his “95 Theses” onto the church door in Wittenberg, Germany, and condemned excesses and corruption of the Roman Catholic church. The event is known as the beginning of

Protestant Reformation. One day later, Nov. 1 is known as “Allerheiligen,” or “All Saints Day.” German Catholics visit cemeteries to light candles and to decorate the gravesites of deceased family members and friends with flowers or wreaths made of fir tree branches, pine cones and dried flowers. Nov. 1 is observed as a legal holiday in the German states with mainly Catholic population such as Rheinland-Pfalz, Saarland, Baden-Wuerrtemberg and Nordrhein-Westfalen. In the other states the religious holiday is a regular workday. The origin of All Saints Day dates back to May 13, 610, when Pope Boniface IV dedicated a special day to all

saints who never received their own memorial day. Old calendars show that almost every day is dedicated to a saint. In the Pantheon in Rome, Pope Boniface honored all saints who lived with Christian ideals in all countries of the world. In 1835, Pope Gregor IV moved All Saints Day to Nov. 1. November is known as the month of remembrance, contemplation and mourning. Protestants remember the dead on “Totensonntag,” Nov. 26. It always falls on the last Sunday before the first Advent Sunday. In 1816, this memorial day was introduced for the first time in Prussia, from where it spread throughout the years to all Protestant regions. The National Day of Mourning will be observed Nov. 19. It is dedicated to the memory of the dead of World War I and II and the victims of Nazi terror. Wreath-laying ceremonies will take place in Ramstein-Miesenbach and Kaiserslautern. Another religious, but not legal, holiday is the Day of Prayer and Repentance Nov. 22.

Medicine fall cleanup saves lives

by Maj. Julie Meek Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and 86th Medical Squadron Imagine walking into your bathroom and finding a prescription bottle open on the floor with pills spilled out. Then looking up to see your toddler with white powder from the tablets on her hands and in her mouth. This was a reality for me a just few years ago. I had no idea how many tablets she had taken and I was horrified. I immediately called the Poison Control Hotline and explained the situation. I wasn’t sure how many, if any, tablets my daughter might have swallowed, but the amazing hotline staff shared all the information they had for this type of medicine overdose. They told me what symptoms to watch for, when I might need to head to the emergency room and how long to watch my child closely. I was incredibly grateful to have that resource but also ashamed that I put my child at risk. Ashamed as a parent but also as a pharmacist. It turned out to be a mild over-the-counter allergy medicine, but I knew that even mild medications can be dangerous for small children, especially in large quantities.

That very day, I gathered all of the medicines in my house and put them in a safe place. I also took out everything that was expired and what we didn’t need or use and disposed of them safely. As a parent and as a pharmacist, I ask you to do the same. Check to be sure all medicine is out of reach from curious kids, teens testing limits and hungry pets. Properly dispose of medication that is expired, unwanted or unneeded by taking it to a military pharmacy or a Drug Take Back event held each year in April and October. You can also safely dispose of medication at home by mixing pills or liquids with something that won’t taste good, like dirt, kitty litter or used coffee grounds. Then put the mixture in a sealed plastic bag and throw it in your household trash. This will prevent drug seekers and animals from accessing dangerous medicine. American Pharmacists Month Know Your Medicine — Know Your Pharmacy Team The Landstuhl Regional Medical Center pharmacy has been celebrating Pharmacists Month throughout October by promoting the pharmacy profession, highlighting tools to maximize medication use and empower-

ing patients to “educate before you medicate.” Your pharmacist, pharmacy technician and doctor are a powerful team working to ensure the best selection and safest management of your medications. Pharmacists are available to provide answers to your medication questions. For each prescription you receive, the pharmacy team checks your information, ensures the new medication will not interact with others and verifies that the medication and dosage are appropriate for your health condition. The pharmacy team relies on patients to keep us informed about all medications and supplements you currently take to prevent possible medication interactions. Here are some other things you can do to help “Know Your Medicine — Know Your Pharmacy Team”: • Schedule a “medication check-up” with a clinical pharmacist. Bring all of your prescriptions, over-thecounter medications, vitamins and supplements to this appointment so the pharmacist can examine them for expiration dates, potential drug interactions and other potential concerns. The clinical pharmacist can also make or recommend changes

to prescriptions to reduce potential side effects and interactions and overall improve your quality of life. • Pick up a medication wallet card from your pharmacy and keep it handy for each doctor’s appointment. Don’t forget to include all of your nonprescription medication, herbal products, vitamins and supplements! • Help us show appreciation for our pharmacy team this month with a simple thank you. Now is a great time to clean out your medicine cabinet, review all your medications, remove any that are expired or unneeded and bring them to a military pharmacy for disposal. The pharmacy team is always here to assist you with great information and smiling faces, ready to help partner with you in your health care. Ultimately, you have the responsibility to manage your medications and your pharmacy team is here to help keep you safe and answer your questions. During Fire Prevention Month, the Ramstein Fire Department fire fighters came to the K-3 students at Landstuhl Elementary Middle School. Each class had a chance to talk to the fire fighters, take a look at the fire truck and answer questions about fire safety. The fire fighters also brought Sparky and his “Little Brother.” Sparky, of course, is always a hit with all students. Ms. Alexis Boyanowski’s class went to see the fire fighters as well, and they had a great time.

Mikayla Grant, Kaiserslautern Middle School student (left), is working on a cardboard challenge project Oct. 19, and Peter Keel, Kaiserslautern Elementary School student, is showing off his robot, which he put together. KES accepted the cardboard challenge, and children from the elementary school and their parents created rocket ships, cars, games and monsters, all from recycled materials. Their endeavor was aided by the Keystone Club from Kaiserslautern High School, the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Club from KMS, and the 569th US. Forces Police Squadron. They worked as a community and cut, taped and glued their masterpieces together.

Suburbicon (R)

Suburbicon is a peaceful, idyllic suburban community with affordable homes and manicured lawns...the perfect place to raise a family, and in the summer of 1959, the Lodge family is doing just that. This is a tale of very flawed people making very bad choices. This is Suburbicon. Starring: Matt Damon, Julianne Moore Noah Jupe, Oscar Issac

Introducing Local Businesses BIG EMMA RAMSTEIN

A favorite restaurant for Americans offering generous portions at very fair prices. The name BIG EMMA is derived from a 19th century maid who worked in a mansion. Emma was known for good service and good food. It is in this tradition that today the good service and good food are served at Restaurant BIG EMMA. BIG EMMA places great emphasis on freshness, so all sauces, herb butter, noodles, burgers, salad dressings, and Schnitzel are all homemade. Up to five permanent staff cooks prepare everything that is offered. Their ice cream is delicious and unique, prepared by a special pastry chef who supplies only to ice cream parlors. Some dishes worth mentioning are the BIG EMMA HIGHTOWER- Angus beef burger, salmon and steaks from the hot lava stone and steak varieties, including sirloin, veal steak, tenderloin, and dry aged. There are also wonderful salads that can be created from the self-service salad counter. This in addition to great burgers, sausages, chicken and schnitzel dishes plus many more. A fantastic dessert menu completes your dining experience. Please note if you order a ½ portion or full-size portion, you will get a free kid’s meal!
