Future nurses learn from present Airmen
Nursing students from Caritas Schulzentrum St. Hildegard in Saarbruecken, Germany, listen to a flight medic from the 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron during a tour of the 86 AES facilities Sept. 13 on Ramstein. The students received an introduction to the 86 AES mission from Airmen assigned to the squadron.

real-world situation. “They had to control the scene, effectively direct a team of (SelfAid and Buddy Care) qualified team members and successfully treat their patients,” Christopher said. After touring Ramstein’s facilities, the nursing students visited Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. There, the students visited the neonatal intensive care unit, the post-anesthesia care unit, labor and delivery, and the operation rooms. “Events like the one today allow the Air Force and DOD to strengthen the existing partnerships with the international community,” Sutherland said. “This is essential when carrying out daily mission requirements but especially when responding to immediate threats, whether locally or throughout the world.”

The scenario included five simulated casualties who needed treatment ranging from a broken femur to severed limbs. In an effort to both increase knowledge and build community partnership, the 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron hosted local national nursing students Sept. 13. Nineteen students from Caritas Schulzentrum St. Hildegard in Saarbruecken, Germany, toured the facilities with Airmen from the squadron. “U.S. military presence is known throughout the world,” said Maj. Teri Sutherland, aeromedical evacuation operations officer. “Many of our host nation civilians are only exposed through social media to events conducted by our armed forces. Educational visits provide the
opportunity to open the eyes and minds of individuals who do not have direct involvement or affiliation with military units, organizations or the (Department of Defense).” The ability to broaden future medical practitioners’ scope of knowledge is a responsibility the squadron takes very seriously. “The 19 students are enrolled in a nursing program that will enable them to enter the workforce of civilian hospitals,” Sutherland said. “The visit today allowed these students to learn opportunities where Air Force nurses can incorporate their skill sets and training in an environment outside of the traditional clinical setting.” Medicine is built on the sharing of knowledge, but it’s as much students teaching Airmen as it is vice versa, said Staff Sgt. Robert Christopher,

86 AMDS keeps track of Ramstein’s health Story and photo by Senior Airman Tryphena Mayhugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Just as parents are concerned about the health and safety of their children, leaders within the Air Force care about the well-being of Airmen. Negligence with personal health not only affects individuals, but it also puts everyone around them at risk. One of the key factors in preventing the spread of viruses or infections is education. The 86th Aerospace Medicine Squadron has a number of sections geared to keeping Ramstein healthy, including an epidemiology office. “Epidemiology is the study of health-related conditions and incidents that occur in a specific population,” said Tech. Sgt. Jessica Roofe, 86 AMDS NCO in charge of epidemiology. “We use this data to determine if there are any spikes in the community related to any foodborne illness, increases in flu-like symptoms or other disease outbreaks. For example, we can identify a foodborne outbreak is occurring if a large group of people from the same squadron come in sick with the same symptoms after eating at a potluck.” Once an outbreak has been identified, the epidemiology office reaches out to the squadron or individuals to inform them of procedures for preventing further spread of the illness. “If people are sick, they cannot do their job,” said Airman 1st Class Brian Voelker, 86 AMDS public health technician. “If they cannot do their job, planes might not go up, which affects the mission.” In an effort to prevent spikes in illnesses from occurring, the epidemiology team conducts educational outreach. This includes education on influenza at the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center during the flu season, good handwashing techniques, briefings at commander’s calls and more. The office also tracks the spread

of sexually transmitted infections. They provide briefings at the First Term Airman Center and local high schools to provide information to Airmen and students on safe practices. The office also encourages members to receive screenings. “In regards to STI screening, it is 100 percent confidential,” Roofe said. “Some patients may not feel comfortable coming to us regarding certain situations. They think everything discussed will end up in their record, and it doesn’t.” The epidemiology team also deals with animal bites, Lyme disease surveillance and Zika outbreaks.
Germany is currently considered rabies free except for wild bats, Roofe said. KMC members can bring ticks found on themselves to the office and the insect will be sent for testing. The office also discusses the signs and symptoms of Lyme disease with the individual. Other programs provided are for latent tuberculosis infection, medical employee health and bloodborne pathogen. Equal opportunity educates, enriches Airmen Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Savannah L. Waters 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
Going into work filled with dread is something everyone has experienced at one time or another. Knowing that you have piles of work to catch up on or that it’s going to be a particularly busy day is one thing. But what happens if you dread work because of unlawful discrimination or sexual harassment? Ensuring Air Force personnel have a healthy environment to work in free from personal, social or institutional barriers within their organization is a priority of the Ramstein Equal Opportunity Program. Every day, EO strives to further educate the base populace on what they can do for people that work here. “I think the biggest part of our job is that we have to think about our people and their resiliency and if they are able to come to work and perform the mission,” said Tech. Sgt. Lakeisha Jones, 86th Airlift Wing equal opportunity advisor. One of the biggest programs that EO uses to assess a unit’s mission effectiveness is called the Out and About Program. “The purpose of the Out and About Program is to gather EO and human relations information that may impact installation personnel,” said Tech. Sgt. Jeannette Warr, 86 AW/EO
Ramstein Inprocessing Line participants attend an equal opportunity briefing Sept. 6 on Ramstein. When Airmen first arrive at Ramstein, they go through RIP Line to learn about the different services that are available to them, including the EO program. During this briefing, Tech. Sgt. Lakeisha Jones, 86th Airlift Wing equal opportunity advisor, briefed the class on reporting complaints.
NCO in charge. Once a new commander takes command, they have 120 days to complete an organization’s Defense Equal Opportunity Climate Survey. After the first assessment, it is conducted annually until another commander assumes the role. Through coordination between EO and different units, these assessments allow the commander to know the human relations climate of an organization. The commander and leaders get a second set of eyes that are not within their organization for ideas and process improvements.
“As a team, we want to make sure that personnel are being evaluated based off of their individual merit and capabilities within their organization and not of their race, color, religion, national origin, sex, or sexual orientation,” Warr said. Meeting the people, assessing the morale and determining the communication flow within a workplace is an essential part of EO’s DEOCS mission. This gives them a chance to remind military members and civilian personnel of their protected categories as well as educate the base population on reporting complaints.
Paralegal career field offers rewarding prospects by Master Sgt. Mary A. Current 86th Airlift Wing Legal Office The paralegal career field has retraining slots available and could be exactly what you are looking for. The primary mission of a paralegal is to assist attorneys in providing legal support to commanders, first sergeants and other key personnel on a broad spectrum of matters, including: military justice administration, administrative boards, accident and collateral investigations, estate planning and tax assistance. Once selected for retraining, Airmen will be trained on preparing and processing claims, interviewing techniques, knowl-
edge of legal procedures concerning military courts, administration boards, legal terminology and interpretations, research methods and use of legal publications and civil law matters. Being a paralegal can be rewarding for individuals looking for a career that gives them a challenge, independence in their work, personal growth and, most importantly, a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day. To find out more about the 5J career field, visit the Air Force Enlisted Classification Directory, Part II. All applicants must also be interviewed by leaders from the 86th Airlift Wing legal office. For more information, email 86AW.JA@us.af.mil.
“We are making sure they have everything they need to do their job,” Jones said. In addition to the annual unit assessments and DEOCS, EO provides human relations education, media-
tion and conflict resolution, equal opportunity and treatment incidents, and specialized training services. The EO office is located on Kapaun. For more information, call 489-8534.

Operation hard target against break-ins by Senior Airman William Reece 86th Security Forces Squadron Have you or anyone you know ever been a victim of theft? Statistics show that for the past three years, 25 percent of the KMC population have become victims of theft each year. So far this year, there have been 17 house break-ins in the KMC area. Of these 17, only four of these crimes were committed during the hours of darkness. Here are a few tips that you and your family can use in order to minimize your chances of becoming a victim of a house break-in: • Always double lock your doors, turning the key until it will not turn anymore. • Always close and lock your windows when no one is home. • If you are going to be traveling, TDY, etc., inform your landlord of your upcoming absence and have a trusted friend or co-worker monitor your home while you are away.
Ask them to: ‒ Collect the mail from your mailbox. ‒ Place your trash cans out on the curb on pick-up dates. ‒ Randomly open and close your rollladens during your absence. This will signify someone is home. If you ever feel that your home has been broken into, do not go inside. Call 110 immediately. So far this year, there have been 69 reports of vehicle break-ins. Surprisingly, 40 out of the 69 vehicles were secured — doors locked and windows rolled up — at the time of the break-in. The majority of vehicle break-ins have occurred during the hours of darkness and on random days of a week. Many vehicle owners become victims of break-ins because they fail to properly secure their high-value items or place them out of sight. Also, just because someone lives on a military installation does not mean they are immune from becoming a
victim of theft. Break-ins can occur anywhere. Some of the most commonly stolen items during vehicle break-ins are: • GPS systems • Cell phones • MP3 players • Military gear and uniforms • Televisions • Computers and laptops Here are a few things you can do to protect against theft of personal belongings from your vehicle: • Always lock your doors and keep windows rolled up. • Do not leave high-value items in your vehicle. For example, if you have an AUX cable running from your stereo to the center console, a potential thief may be interested to see what is on the other end of the cable. • Wipe the GPS suction cup ring off of the windshield. The residue on the glass may spark the interest of a would-be thief. • In general, you should keep
your car as clean and empty as possible to avoid enticing potential larcenists. • Park in well-lit areas. • Avoid placing stickers on your vehicle that portray affiliation with the United States or the armed forces. It can be an indicator that you are American and potentially increase your risk of becoming a victim of theft. If you suspect that any of your personal belongings have been stolen, contact security forces for assistance. Ramstein security forces is located in Bldg. 2371, next to the Auto Hobby Shop, and can be reached at 480-2050 or 06371-47-2050. Vogelweh security forces is located in Bldg. 2067, across the street from Kaiserslautern High School, and can be reached at 489-6060 or 0631-536-6060. Remember these tips. They directly contribute to safety, security, awareness and prevention — the foundation of being a hard target.

10 EAEF: Flight that saves lives
Carts hold litters and supplies Sept. 9 on Ramstein. Each team from the 10th Expeditionary Aeromedical Evacuation Flight has an individual set of equipment, to include medical supplies and monitors, they must check and maintain.
Story and photos by Senior Airman Jimmie D. Pike 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs In the frigid and dim cargo hold of a C-17 Globemaster III, Airmen strive to save the lives of injured service members while being tormented by the deafening rumble of four engines. These Airmen are the patients’ best option for medical care and transportation to a hospital. The 10th Expeditionary Aeromedical Evacuation Flight, under the 13th Operations Support Squadron, transports injured service members via aircraft from deployed locations to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center or
other accommodating hospitals while providing medical support. “We could find ourselves in the back of C-130, KC-135, C-17 and possibly even C-21A (aircraft),” said Senior Master Sgt. Theresa Sheheen, flight superintendent. “The back of a plane isn’t the most ideal medical facility, but that’s what makes the job interesting.” The most ‘unhospital-like’ places are where members of the 10 EAEF set up their work stations and execute their duties to ensure the recovery, and at times survival, of patients within their area of responsibility. Upon being alerted, the team has just a few hours to be on the plane
Senior Airman Chris Dale (left) and Tech. Sgt. Erin Morit, 10th Expeditionary Aeromedical Evacuation Flight technicians, load and arrange equipment onto a C-17A Globemaster III Sept. 9 on Ramstein. After being alerted for a mission, members of the 10 EAEF have just hours to report, check equipment, load the plane and set up for the mission.
and ready to go. Within that time frame, Airmen going on the mission must pack a 72-hour bag, attend an intelligence brief, attend a crew brief, check all their equipment and supplies before loading the aircraft, load the aircraft, check equipment and supplies again, and perform other ancillary tasks. “There are checklists we follow to ensure that everything is properly checked, prepared and completed for the mission,” Sheheen said. “The checklists provide step by step instructions for just about everything we do.” Even though a lot of time and dedication go into preparedness, not
everything can always be accounted for. “The most stressful thing about our job is the unknown,” said (Dr.) Maj. Jason Merrell, critical care air transportation team physician. “There may be a mission where we don’t get notification of a patient’s condition or they may take a turn for the worse. We have to prepare for scenarios we might not expect and stay one step ahead.” Despite the challenges, the job is very rewarding to those who do it. “We save lives and get people back to good health,” Merrell said. “It’s a great feeling to know that we contribute to that.”
Traffic circle construction to begin outside Ramstein East Gate by Stefan Alford U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Public Affairs Construction is anticipated to begin in November on a traffic circle to improve L369 congestion around the new medical center area and provide quick access to and from Ramstein and Rhine Ordnance Barracks, as well as improve access from the local communities to the autobahn. While the end result will alleviate traffic issues along the L369 corridor, the planned road work through November 2019 will create an interim impact on traffic in the area. “This is an important project for our community, but there will be an impact for those using Ramstein’s East Gate,” said Brig. Gen. Richard G. Moore Jr., 86th Airlift Wing commander. “We need drivers to pay
attention, exercise caution and understand that there will be some increased commute times during the morning and early evening hours.” To help minimize the construction impact, the German State of Rheinland-Pfalz Transportation Agency has developed a phased work plan that will keep at least one lane of traffic open at all times in each direction on L369, the main access road to Ramstein East Gate from the A6 junction at Einsiedlerhof. Ramstein East Gate and the medical center construction site will be accessible at all times. The traffic circle is the first of a series of construction projects that will overlap to ultimately improve traffic on L369 for U.S. forces and local communities. There will be concurrent construction of the new access control point to ROB and Ramstein and a bridge over L369 that will
connect Kisling Memorial Drive at Ramstein to the medical center. Construction of the ACP is scheduled to begin late spring 2017, and the bridge will begin late 2018. Upon completion of the ACP and bridge, Ramstein East Gate will be closed and used only for contingencies. According to leadership, the new seven-lane ACP, designed to serve both Ramstein and ROB beginning in 2020, will further improve traffic as the 600-meter long stacking lanes will help prevent traffic from backing up onto L369. In addition, the new bridge connecting the ACP with Ramstein will provide direct access for wounded warriors from the Ramstein flight line to the new medical center. It will also reduce traffic on L369 as U.S. personnel will also be able to travel directly between installations.
The timeline for the road work will also help mitigate the impact of construction traffic for the medical center. In order to minimize construction traffic, the main elements of the L369 traffic circle are being done prior to the vertical construction of the medical center, projected to begin in 2019. “We are working hand-in-hand with our German partners on these important projects,” said Col. Keith E. Igyarto, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz commander. “The German government (with oversight by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers) is the lead agency for most aspects of the design and construction of the L369 traffic circle and the medical center project. The German Federal Construction and State Construction and Transportation Agencies have closely coordinated the construction phasing plan with the U.S. Forces.”

7th MSC’s MSU-E conducts MEDEVAC training
Seventh Mission Support Command Soldiers from the Medical Support Unit-Europe conduct medical evacuation training with the 1st Armored Division’s Combat Aviation Brigade Sept. 9 at NCO Field on Daenner Kaserne.
Story and photos by Sgt. 1st Class Matthew Chlosta 7th Mission Support Command Public Affairs Army Reserve medics and active duty helicopter pilots worked together to practice loading and transporting patients. Seventh Mission Support Command Soldiers from the Medical Support Unit-Europe conducted medical evacuation orientation and training with the 1st Armored Division’s Combat Aviation Brigade Sept. 9 at NCO Field on Daenner Kaserne. The training was designed to improve efficiency and create realistic training and familiarization with the safe use of Army MEDEVAC UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters during the MSU-E’s annual training exercise. “Today we had an aviation MEDEVAC unit come down and we basically practiced the interaction, the handoff techniques,” said 1st Lt.
Daniel Clark, an operations officer with the MSU-E, 7th MSC. In the morning there was an aircrew safety orientation and familiarization brief to the MSU-E Soldiers followed by cold-load training. “It was great,” said Staff Sgt. Jessie Turner, flight medic with the 1st Armored Division’s Combat Aviation Brigade. “I feel like we reinforced skills that we both had.” The afternoon session was more intense with hot-load litter training, hoist operations with short flights above and around the NCO Parade Field or landing zone. This allowed the MSU-E Soldiers to understand how to keep future patients stable during on-load and off-load from a MEDEVAC helicopter. Turner said they trained with specialized litters, which are used to load patients into their aircraft when they are unable to land due to the terrain. Clark said it was important for his Soldiers to know what to expect when a MEDEVAC helicopter
arrives, including how to approach the helicopters, how to load patients on and how to interact with their crew chief and flight medic, in order to do ground handoffs and ensure everything runs correctly in real-life scenarios. “Our medics were really excited to work with a flight medic and learn the other side of being a medic,” Clark said. “Today we practiced a few techniques incorporating a Blackhawk helicopter platform,” said Spc. John Duncan, a medic with the MSU-E, 7th MSC. “First of which was loading a patient onto a litter, and the second of which was actually loading a litter onto the helicopter.” After that, the training involved hoist operations during which members of the crew dropped from the helicopter and picked up a simulated casualty from the ground, he said. “It was very exciting,” Duncan said. “I think it gave a lot of insight into how the operation typically
works and what some of our capabilities are with that platform as well.” According to Duncan, a major concern for medics when transporting patients is not causing further damage and understanding what happens in the last phase of care when transporting somebody. The training gave some insight into how patients are transported and how they are loaded, Duncan said. It also gave the medics some considerations as they hand patients off to the flight crew. “It was a good review of our Soldier skills, some of our basic Soldier skills, such as radio operation and then the liter carries,” Duncan said. “It tied everything together into a more cohesive, real training exercise. Duncan said the training is more effective when one visualizes what’s happening and incorporates it into a more realistic setting. “It was great training,” Turner said. “I appreciate everyone that was here and hope to do it again sometime.”

86 MXG keeps Ramstein ‘Forward, Ready, Now’ Story and photo by Senior Airman Tryphena Mayhugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The Air Force functions like a complex machine made up of interlocking gears that keep the mission rolling. Every wheel is important with its specific function, but when one gear malfunctions, the whole mechanism suffers. The 86th Maintenance Group is an element of Ramstein that keeps the mission pushing forward. “The military is an instrument of national power, and the Air Force is an incredibly flexible and responsive arm of that instrument,” said Col. Paul Filcek, 86 MXG commander. “Ramstein is the nerve center for Air Force operations in this hemisphere, and the 86 MXG is critical.” The group supports European, Africa and central commands. It is home to the only tactical airlift maintenance organization, distinguished visitor airlift and 24/7 aeromedical evacuation operation in U.S. Air Forces in Europe. It is also the crashed, damaged and disabled aircraft recovery agent for all of Europe See 86 MXG, Page 11

Price increase, payment change for USAREUR drivers Story and photo by Senior Airman Jimmie D. Pike 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The United States Army Europe Registry of Motor Vehicles will be increasing the price for USAREUR licenses to $20 and vehicle registration to $35 beginning Oct. 1. Prices are being increased as a necessity to absorb the costs of personnel, supplies, data processing and equipment, which have grown over the years. “The fee change will be implemented for all licensing issuances to include initial, renewals, additions to class and reinstatements,” said Staff Sgt. Quinton Franklin, 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron training validation and operations trainer. “We will have the same application with no changes to the process.” A temporary change to the available types of payments has also been made. Only
checks and money orders will be accepted by the 86 VRS USAREUR licensing office until further notice. “We also do the application for the international driver’s license,” said Senior Airman Christopher Correa, 86 VRS licensing official. “The price of that will not change with the USAREUR license and registrations price increases.” According to information
released by the USAREUR Registry of Motor Vehicles, the registry is a supplementary mission nonappropriated fund entity that does not generate profits but must recover operational costs. The fund can no longer absorb the losses without increasing fees. For more information, contact the USAREUR licensing office at 480-2394 or 480-0116.
The United States Army Europe Registry of Motor Vehicles will be increasing the price of licenses and vehicle registrations starting Oct. 1. Vehicle registration will increase from $30 to $35, and USAREUR licenses will increase from $10 to $20.

KMC health care providers prepare for flu vaccinations Courtesy of Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Public Affairs Army and Air Force medical officials are developing plans for all service members, family members, Department of Defense civilians and other eligible beneficiaries in the KMC to receive the flu vaccination. Multiple flu vaccination opportunities will be available throughout the KMC. Times, dates and locations will be publicized once the flu schedule is finalized. Army and Air Force health professionals recommend the flu vaccine for everyone ages 6 months and older. At Air Force community outreach flu events, the vaccine will be provided to beneficiaries ages 6 months and older. At Army community outreach flu events sponsored by the Kleber Health Clinic and Baumholder Health Clinic, the flu vaccine will be provided to beneficiaries ages 6 months and older. At Army commu-
nity events sponsored by Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, the flu vaccine will be offered to beneficiaries ages 4 years and older. The minimum eligibility age for flu vaccine will be highlighted for each community event in the KMC flu schedule, to be published at a later date. If the flu vaccine is not available at a community event for those younger than 4 years of age, they should receive their vaccination at their military treatment facility pediatric clinic. The FluMist nasal spray will not be provided this year. Based on data showing lower effectiveness of the FluMist compared to the injectable flu vaccine, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends not using FluMist during the 2016-2017 flu season. It is Department of Defense policy to follow the annual ACIP influenza recommendations. For many, such as military service members and health care workers,
the annual flu vaccination is not only a recommendation; it is a requirement. These people should receive information from their unit or organization for guidance on when and where they will receive their vaccination. Both military and civilian beneficiaries are encouraged to attend one of the upcoming flu vaccination events, which are provided as a convenience as wait times should be shorter than those expected at KMC immunization clinics. It is estimated that each year in the U.S. an average of 5 to 20 percent of the population gets the flu and more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from seasonal flu-related complications. Flu seasons are unpredictable and can be severe. During a period of 30 years, between 1976 and 2006, estimates of flu-associated deaths in the U.S. range from a low near 3,000 to a high of about 49,000 people, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Some people, such as the elderly, young children, pregnant women and people with certain health conditions are at higher risk for serious flu complications. The best way to prevent the flu is to receive the seasonal flu vaccination each year. The flu season in Europe routinely continues through April, with the greatest number of cases occurring in January. Vaccine and immunization information is available at the CDC website at www.cdc.gov/vaccines and the Department of Defense Military Vaccine Agency website at www. vaccines.mil. TODAY: Asian Noodles with Vegetables and Fried Egg Ingredients (for 4 people) 1 small piece of ginger 1 clove of garlic 4 tablespoons soy sauce 3 tablespoons rice vinegar or white wine vinegar 6 tablespoons sesame oil ¼ teaspoon salt, plus salt for boiling noodles and vegetables 1 pound broccoli 1 bag of sugar snap peas (approx. ½ pound) ½ of a head of Chinese cabbage 1 ½ pounds of Chinese noodles 1 tablespoon sunflower oil 4 eggs Finely dice the ginger and garlic. Mix with soy sauce, vinegar and 3 tablespoons sesame oil. Use a large pot and prepare Chinese noodles as directed on the package, then strain noodles once they are cooked. While noodles are cooking, prepare the broccoli by cutting into small pieces. Chop the cabbage, removing the stem from each piece. In a second pot, boil water and cook broccoli for 2 minutes. Add the sugar snap peas
for 1 minute. Strain these vegetables and put into ice water so that they will keep their nice green color. Heat the remaining sesame oil in a pan. Add all the Chinese cabbage allowing it to roast for 1 minute. Remove broccoli and sugar snap peas from ice water and add to the roasting pan to get them warm. Use a pan to prepare the fried eggs in sunflower oil. Cook them sunny side up. Put noodles in pan with vegetables and add the ginger and garlic sauce. Stir all together. Add seasoning to match your taste. Plate the noodles and vegetables and top with a fried egg. This is a nice dinner for a day when you are in the mood for a vegetarian meal.

and operates the largest precision measurement equipment laboratory in the Air Force. “Simply put, the 86 MXG provides jets and equipment that project airpower for almost the entire hemisphere,” Filcek said. “Maintainers are much more than mechanics and craftspeople, they are high-tech puzzle masters and extraordinary production orchestrators. A typical day for a maintainer involves a lot of problem solving by default.” The group is broken into three sections: 86th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, 86th Maintenance Squadron and the maintenance operations element. Within these are 12 flights and 18 sections comprised of more than 20 different Air Force specialty codes. Approximately 1,000 Airmen and contractors fall under the 86 MXG, each section contributing to the overall mission. Sometimes juggling all of them can prove to be difficult. “No day is the same,” said 1st Lt. Terry Hebert, 37th Aircraft Maintenance Unit assistant officer in charge. “This brings its own set of new and unique challenges, but to see our world class maintainers tackle each job encountered with pride and precision, there’s just no better feeling.” The 86 AMXS performs maintenance for 14 C-130J Super Hercules, five C-21 Learjet, two C-37 Gulfstream V and a Boeing C-40 aircraft. They launch, recover, service, inspect and repair aircraft, both at Ramstein and on the road as flying crew chiefs. “(Some may not realize) the amount of man hours it takes to put one C-130J in the air,” Hebert said. “On average, every time you see an aircraft in the air it takes 19 maintenance man hours to produce that one flight.” The 86 MXS performs longer, regularly scheduled preventive aircraft inspections, nondestructive inspections for aircraft and equipment, aerospace ground equipment maintenance and distribution, backshop component testing and repair, and much more. “Think of (the 86 AMXS) like a pit crew during a race and (the 86 MXS) as the repair garage after or before the race,” Filcek said. “But it is not that clear-cut. The 86 MXS has a very direct hand in daily sortie production and the 86 AMXS accomplishes very significant unscheduled repairs and maintenance. The overlap is synergistic by design.” It is only when each gear within a machine is in its correct place and functioning properly that the mechanism can perform its job as a whole. The 86 MXG keeps Ramstein mission ready so when the time comes it can play its role in the large scale machine that is the Air Force. “We are all one team at Ramstein,” Filcek said. “There is not another group in the Air Force I’d rather command, and I’m pretty sure every group commander here feels the very same way. Each group is critical, and each is as good as it gets. To all of Team Ramstein, let’s take care of each other every day, and let’s ‘hack the mish’ like no one else!”

SHOPPING BEYOND
THE MILITARY BASE Perhaps you have just arrived or even been in Germany for a while, and you would like to venture out and explore the local economy. However, you do not know where to begin or where to go. Well we are here to help you get started on your shopping journey beyond the gate guards! Below, you will find info on popular grocery and hardware stores as well as drugstores.

Grocery Stores
Let’s first head to the grocery store! Depending on which part of the United States you are from, you may be familiar with Wal-Mart Megastore, Publix, Piggly Wiggly, County Market, Food City, Safeway, Whole Foods, Arlan’s Market, Giant Food, Kroger, and many many more. If you are looking for grocery stores in Germany, then look out for Aldi, Lidl, Netto, Penny, Edeka, Globus, Real, and others. Although German grocery stores may be a little smaller and have less items than what you are used to in the U.S., you will find all your necessities such as food items (fruits & vegetables, dairy products, meats, breads, canned goods, frozen goods, organic products, snack foods, etc); beverages (including alcoholic drinks); cleaning products; paper products; health products (lotion, shampoo, etc.); sanitary products, baby products, and much more. Additionally, many of the German stores offer their own brand goods at a cheaper price than the well-known brand products.
One of the first things you will probably notice which is different about German stores is the shopping cart. In Germany you will need a coin (usually a 50 cent, 1 or 2 Euro) in order to use it. You just simply place the coin in the slot to release the chain that is connected to the other carts. And when you finish using the cart, replace the chain to get your money back. Carts can be found outside in the parking lot or in the front of the store. Other things that you may find different are the following: the cashiers are sitting; you must bag your own items and take them outside as there are no baggers; and you must pay for plastic bags. Alternatively, bring your own bags or a shopping basket for your purchases. If wanting to use a (U.S. or German) credit card or a (U.S. or German) debit card, it is best to ask the staff before purchasing because some stores accept cash only but this is changing more and more. Drugstores
Photo by Iakov Filimonov / Shutterstock.com
Back home we are familiar with Walgreens, CVS and Rite Aid. In Germany, large drugstore chains include Müller, DM and Rossmann. Their range can be divided into four areas: remedy (teas and essences); beauty and wellness (body care and skin care products, fragrances, essential oils, cosmetics, etc.); organic health foods; and product for house and garden maintenance. Müller offers the following products: perfumes, stationary including school supplies, toys, multi-media (i.e. DVD movies as well as music CDs), commodities and fashion accessories. DM’s product range can be broken down into the following: • Beauty products (makeup, natural cosmetics, face, body, hair, fragrance and intimate hygiene) • Health (over-the-counter medicine, vitamins & minerals, etc.) • Nutritional (food, drinks, organic products and special dietary) • Baby & child (pregnancy care, diapers, nutritional items, bottles & pacifiers, games, clothes, etc.) • Household goods (kitchen, bathroom, washing, cleaning and animals) • Photo service (Order photo products online & instant print service)
Hardware stores
Are you thinking about adding a deck to your backyard or redesigning a room in your apartment? Are you a “Do-It-Yourself” kind of person? What probably comes to mind back home would be Home Depot, Ace Hardware or HomeBase. Here in Germany, a few large hardware chains are Toom Baummarkt, Obi, and Globus Hardware. Get your DIY juices flowing by selecting various items including: building materials; build & technology; garden & outdoor; grills & grill accessories; living & design; plumbing & installation; bad & sanitary; flooring & tiles; paint & wallpaper; heating, air conditioning & ventilation; kitchen; lights & electrics; machine tools & workshop; awnings & sun protection; zoo & aquarium, etc. The list goes on! German hardware stores also have professional staff available to assist you with your purchase or give advice on your DIY project. Though language barrier may be a problem, you can usually find someone that speaks English and will enjoy the chance to show it off.
