Medical professionals assigned to Ramstein Air Base and Rhine Ordnance Barracks began mass administering mumps, measles and rubella, and chickenpox vaccines to Afghan evacuees awaiting onward travel.
The mass vaccination began Sept. 16, at the request of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention due to a small number of measles cases in the U.S. among newly arrived evacuees from Afghanistan.
“These vaccines offer them the ability to have extra protection,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Jaime Rojas, 86th Medical Group chief of aerospace medicine. “With the extra protection of the vaccines, wherever we end up sending them, there is protection for both the individual and for the people at the end destination as well.”
The vaccinations are required before the CDC mandated flight pause to the U.S. is lifted and

Kapaun found his calling to God early in life, and soon after becoming a Catholic priest towards the end of World War II, he asked his bishop’s permission to join the U.S. military. The bishop agreed, and Kapaun found himself in India for the last year of the war.
After the war, Kapaun returned to his home church to continue his life as a priest in the civilian world. When the Korean conflict flared, Kapaun deployed to Korea and the
U.S. Army’s 8th Cavalry. On Nov. 1-2, 1950, his unit was ordered to retreat after being overrun by the Chinese People’s Volunteer Army. Disobeying the order, he remained with the 3d Battalion and was captured along with many who survived the battle. Those survivors, many severely wounded, marched 87 miles to Prison Camp 5, Pyoktong, North Korea, near the Chinese border.
Having cared for and cleaned the wounded, stolen food from the guards, and prayed with and for his fellow POWs, giving them spiritual hope, Kapaun succumbed to his own malnutrition and pneumonia and was taken to the death house. He told his fellow prisoners not to be sad, because he was going to where he always wanted to go. Kapaun died May 23, 1951.
Buried in a mass grave near the Yalu River, his unknown remains made their way to Hawaii’s National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in 1956. By the grace of God, Kapaun’s remains were identified in March. Kapaun was definitively home on U.S. soil.
On Sept. 25, Kapaun will make his way from Honolulu, Hawaii, to Wichita, Kansas, on a 12-hour flight. A procession will transport him from the airport to his home in Pilsen for a private homecoming the following day. Other events include a live-streamed public rosary and vigil in Wichita on Sept. 28(https://www.youtube.com/user/ dioceseofwichita), and his funeral and interment on Sept. 29. Here is a snippet of significant events since Kapaun’s death:
• 1993 Pope John Paul II declares Father Emil a Servant of God; step one of four towards sainthood in the Catholic Church.
• 2013, April, President Barack Obama posthumously awards Medal of Honor to Kapaun
• 2021, July, South Korean President Moon Jae-in presents Kapaun South Korea’s highest military award.
I encourage you to consciously think of Father Emil Joseph Kapaun, an American hero, each time you drive onto Vogelweh and Kapaun Air Station.

evacuee flight operations can resume.
“The sooner that we can get away from our primary mission of doing this operation with the individuals that are currently here, the sooner that we get back to our main mission, our medical readiness, and our ability to focus on our primary mission,” Rojas said.
The mass administration of the COVID vaccines for military members allowed this mass vaccination to occur seamlessly, with teams at Ramstein and ROB vaccinating more than 3,000 evacuees with the MMR and chickenpox vaccine during the first day.
“There’s absolutely lessons learned throughout this whole process,” Rojas said. “We’ve been doing so many COVID operations that this is kind of like another walk in the park for us because we already had the standard operation procedures
in place. As soon as we heard that this may happen, the vaccines were here within a week and administered the day after arrival.”
Administering vaccinations safely and efficiently has not only been the main priority at Ramstein, but also at ROB.
“We were able to modify our existing medical and reception processes to vaccinate hundreds of people each day,” said U.S. Army Capt. Alexander Lovely, 39th Movement Control Battalion officer in charge. “(ROB) is on track to complete the majority of all vaccinations by our projected completion date. Due to our preparedness, we have been able to conduct our daily operations in addition to our mass vaccination efforts.”
Protecting the local community and evacuees will remain at the forefront of the evacuee operation. Rapidly and safely administering vaccinations to the evacuee population is helping ensure the health and well-being of the entire base and local community.

In an attempt to provide a taste of home, personnel assigned to the 86th Force Support Squadron and the 786th Force Support Squadron met with evacuees to gain a better understanding of traditional Afghan meal preparation. They learned how to prepare and cook palatable and culturally appealing meals for the thousands of evacuees currently at Ramstein Air Base, Sept. 14.
“We have been at this for a few weeks so now we’re going into the sustainment phase,” said Master Sgt. Emmanuel Santillan, 786th FSS sustainment services flight chief.
“We’re looking at improving processes, particularly in the food options we provide to them. We’re looking at how to cook food in a different manner and style than what we’re used to and how to be more culturally aware of what we’re providing the evacuees.”
During the peak of Operation Allies Refuge, the 86th and 786th FSS components were providing meals for more than 15,000 evacuees.
“Right now, we are feeding anywhere between 6,000 to 8,000 evacuees daily, per meal period,” Santillan said.
Although thousands of evacuees have departed from Ramstein and have been transported to other transient locations, there are still thousands here who still require food support.
“The misconception is Afghanistan has only one culture, but there are several intertwined,” Santillan said. “There are different tribes in each pod, so our goal is to get each tribe’s input, (prepare) their food to taste similar to (what they would cook) themselves.”
During the outreach initiative, an evacuee with exceptional cooking credentials along with the help of an evacuee assistant, made a meal for the 786th and 86th FSS staff to reflect the variety of spices and ingredients used in a customary Afghan dish.
“We learned alot about the spices they use as well as the methods they use to cook their food. That’s probably the biggest thing we’re trying to (master),” said Ben Furqueion, 86th FSS business operations flight chief.
After the food was prepared, the Afghan chefs sat down with the Ramstein staff and enjoyed a meal together.
“Having the opportunity to sit down and have a meal with them was an amazing opportunity to not only integrate, but to understand their culture and how we can work together as one team,” Santillan said. “They were also able to see some of the challenges that arise when having to cook on such a mass scale.
The goal of the outreach program is to help the food sustainment flights to understand the cultural nuisances involved in food preparation.
“One of our main goals is to accommodate them and bring a little piece of home to our guests,” Furqueion said.

An evacuee slices onions at Ramstein Officer Club’s Kitchen during Operation Allies Refuge at Ramstein Air Base, Sept. 13. The 786th Force Support Squadron and the 86th FSS conducted an outreach initiative with evacuee cooks to learn the way the evacuees like to prepare their own food.
An evacuee mixes tomato paste, rice and onions while cooking in the Ramstein Officer Club’s Kitchen at Ramstein Air Base, Operation Allies Refuge, Sept. 13. After the food was cooked, the evacuee cooks and the Ramstein staff sat down and enjoyed a meal together.
Red Cross volunteers fold towels at Ramstein Air Base, Aug. 22. The volunteers passed out towels, food and other donated items in support of Operation Allies Refuge. Team Ramstein along with U.S. Army brethren, families and volunteers are aiding evacuees from Afghanistan.
U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Samantha Perez, United States Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa Headquarters commander’s enlisted aid, prepares dinner meals for evacuees at Ramstein Air Base, Aug. 26. Perez volunteered to support Operation Allies Refuge through preparing meals for evacuees and also donated shoes, baby formula, diapers and wipes to evacuee children.
During Operation Allies Refuge, a yard boss’ responsibility is to assign Airmen and augmentees working within an evacuee pod at Ramstein Air Base with a duty.
U.S. Air Force Tech Sgt. Claudia Trevino, 435th Contingency Response Support Squadron section chief for the intelligence flight, shared her experience while supporting OAR as a yard boss for Pod-3.
Trevino manages 20 to 40 augmentees daily depending on
the amount of people from RAB units that are able to volunteer for humanitarian aid efforts.
Augmentees and volunteers from the community will do tasks around the pods to ensure cleanliness and safety such as taking out trash, distributing donated items, serving food and playing with the children.
Trevino said she has enjoyed working with people from every career field and it has been an eye-opening experience.
The biggest impact from not only the military augmentees and the volunteers at the pods is from the Ramstein commu-
nity, she said. Everything from coats to diapers and formula has been donated from members of the Kaiserslautern Military Community.
“I’ve never seen anything come together like this and it’s been amazing to see,” Trevino said. “Everybody comes with a positive attitude. It’s been great working with the evacuees, getting to know them on a more personal level, and working with the babies is probably one of the best parts. The surrounding communities who have donated have done so much more than they can even imagine to help these people.”
During Afghanistan evacuation operations, the 86th Operational Medical Readiness Squadron’s mental health flight has been targeted to care for the military and evacuees.
Many Airmen have been working longer hours than usual — often outside their career fields — assisting in food distribution, donation deliveries, tent build-ups and trash collection within the transient lodging areas.
In such an uncertain time, it’s important people know there are several resources available for service members who might need help processing experiences from supporting evacuation efforts.
“Anytime there’s a realworld event, team members from Disaster Mental Health are able to offer several counseling sessions for individuals to process the event, in which no notes are entered in their medical record,” said Capt. Anna Davis, 86th OMRS disaster mental health team chief. “This applies to anyone who has participated in (the evacuation), who could benefit from processing experiences and reactions directly related to this mission.”
Service members can go to the mental health front desk and request DMH services to speak to a provider.
“In the military, support is always within reach, sometimes we just have to take that first step outside of our comfort zone and talk to someone we trust,” Davis said. “It’s not always easy, but I’ve rarely heard someone be shunned or denied when they reached out for help whether it was from a chaplain or mental health provider, or a friend or co-worker.”
The mental health team has also been available to help evacuees cope with being in a new environment, far away from home.
“The DMH team has worked with the medical staff to respond to evacuees with depressive and anxious symptoms, grief, trauma, and feelings of hopelessness,” said Maj. Rachel Wiley, 86th OMRS mental health flight commander. “We have had the opportunity to sit with evacuees, hear their stories, help them feel less alone through this process and advocate
for individuals who have mental health needs.”
In addition to supporting the mental health of military and evacuees, the mental health flight has also provided volunteers to aid in the physical well-being of the evacuees.
“We have been transporting patients, helping the USO and Red Cross pass out donations and water bottles, finding tents and cots for women and families, creating safe coloring spaces for children while waiting to in-process and helping
with food preparation,” Davis said. “In these moments, we are always wearing our mental health hats. We might be setting up a tent with someone while asking questions about their experiences and allowing them space to discuss challenges they have faced while being involved in the mission.”
To continue supporting evacuees while at Ramstein, it’s imperative Airmen remain resilient and mentally tough. In the event they’re not or need a few new coping skills, there are several resources and recommendations provided by the mental health flight for those who might experience adverse thoughts and emotions.
“We talk a lot about self-care in mental health. But self-care is not just taking bubble baths and meditating once a week,” Davis said. “Self-care is connecting with others in a meaningful way and increasing activities that engage your brain, body, mind and spirit. Decompressing can look different for each person. It is important for each person to find what allows them to recharge.”
The second core value of the U.S. Air Force is Service Before Self; in order to serve others, Airmen must take care of themselves, physically, spiritually and mentally.
“The mission never stops and it is extremely important for us to be checking in with each other,” Wiley said. “We all need time to connect and decompress and we can mitigate total exhaustion and burnout if we take care of ourselves and reach out to those who need extra support.”
If an individual would like to engage in general mental health services they can call the front desk at DSN 314-479-2390 and set up an appointment or walk into the medical clinic if they have acute needs during duty hours. Other resources include the Military and Family Life Counseling Program, Military One Source and speaking to a Chaplain.

Gen. Jacqueline Van Ovost, Air Mobility Command commander and Chief Master Sgt. Brian Kruzelnick, AMC command chief, visited the 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing at Ramstein Air Base, Sept. 9-10.
With approximately 34,100 evacuees having processed through the base since the beginning of the evacuation mission, the visit was intended to show the commander and chief how Airmen stationed at Ramstein have supported the Afghan travelers.
“It’s unbelievable what this team has had to face and how you have solved the problem sets thrown at you,” Van Ovost said. “I couldn’t be more proud of the hard work of the 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing and their teams.”
In addition to witnessing how Airmen are contributing to the monumental mission that is Operation Allies Refuge, Van Ovost thanked AMOW Airmen and showed them their work is recognized.
“What can I say [about the 521st AMOW OAR efforts] other than historic,” Van Ovost said. “What you did will be read about. Someday we’re going to write a book about this and the 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing needs to be front and center.”
Despite the long hours, Kruzelnick reminded Airmen what all of their hard work means for the futures of the Afghan evacuees.
“As we go back to the U.S., we’re seeing happy people running through the green fields, playing soccer.” Kruzelnick said. “They know their life has changed by all of the faces and people they have met within this wing, the people that touched their hearts and changed their lives.”
Despite the outbound processing of more than 24,000 travelers who have departed from Ramstein to the United States or another safe location, the wing still maintained mission readiness while supporting the evacuation mission.
“This is what you were built to do… the nation depended on you and they didn’t know it,” Van Ovost said. “This operation happened on the backs of this wing and you delivered.”
Regardless of the mission, whether it be working with inter-
agency partners to establish an international air terminal in a C-5 maintenance hangar or maintaining, fleeting and ensuring aircraft takeoff on time, AMC Airmen maintain Rapid Global Mobility, every day.
“We are so proud to be a part of this team, we are so inspired and have nothing but appreciation, deep care and love for everything everybody does,” Kruzelnick said. “Proud to be, AMC!”
at Ramstein Air Base, Sept. 10. Samadi, uses his ability to communicate with the evacuees to provide them with any help he can offer.

Nader Samadi, NATO Allied Air Command deputy commander of the air liaison element, look for a pair of shoes that will fit an evacuee child at Ramstein Air Base, Sept. 9. are and how we can help, it gives them hope. It’s not just me, it’s also all of the interpreters that are working for both the U.S. and the German forces.”
Samadi relates to the evacuees on a personal level.
StoryA German service member assigned to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is supporting the humanitarian evacuation from Afghanistan in a way that few can.
German air force Lt. Col. Nader Samadi, NATO Allied Air Command deputy commander of the air liai-
son element — fluent in English, German and Farsi — uses his language skills to aid in communication between the evacuees, U.S. Air Force Airmen and German forces.
“He’s made a huge impact going into the pods and building rapport with the evacuees,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Jonathan Montgomery, 86th Comptroller Squadron deputy pod one boss. “It gives evacuees a person to speak to and know we’re here to help
them. Translators help us by being able to communicate what we’re doing and when they’re expected to leave.”
While inside the transient lodging areas, Samadi talks with the evacuees to ensure all of their needs are met.
“They feel more comfortable talking to a person that is actually speaking their language,” Samadi said. “It helps a lot to understand how they feel, what their needs
“Knowing where I came from and knowing what I saw from 1979 to 1985, I can relate to the people here because they probably have gone through worse things,” Samadi said. “I know that they want to get out and start anew and now they have the chance. We’re here to help them in the process.”
Samadi and his team of approximately 200 German service members have helped support Ramstein’s Afghanistan evacuation efforts, from building pods to caring for the evacuees.
“We’ve all been in Afghanistan for 20 years, the mission is over, but has to end in a good way, which is us helping these people start a new life,” Samadi said. Through his own experiences, Samadi uses his knowledge of transitioning to a different country and adapting to a new way of life to relate to the evacuees in order to give hope.
“They need to be strong, that’s what I tell them,” Samadi said. “Get your education and start up your life, leave the past behind. That’s what my family and I did.”
Samadi reminds evacuees that there’s always hope and encourages them to believe in themselves and work hard to get where they want in life.

The 86th Maintenance Squadron’s Aerospace Ground Equipment flight plays a vital role in sustaining key infrastructure and basic necessities for evacuees during Operation Allies Refuge.
The AGE flight’s normal operations consist of providing vital components and ground equipment for the Airmen on the flightline, such as the generators that provide power to the aircraft. They also inspect and maintain most of the maintenance equipment.
While supporting increased flight operations, the AGE Airmen have delivered over 4,000 meals, 28,000 thousand sleeping bags and blankets, 542 portable toilets, 165 pallets of water bottles and 60 hand-washing stations to the pods housing evacuees.
“We’ve delivered pretty much any and everything to the pods over the last few weeks,” said Senior Airman Jacob Pastorem 86th MXS AGE journeyman. “We also conduct maintenance and preventative maintenance on the flood lights and heaters in the pods to ensure the security and comfort of the evacuees.”
U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Dylan Miklacic, 86th Maintenance Squadron Aerial Ground Equipment dispatch noncommissioned officer in charge, conducts maintenance on a generator during Operation Allies Refuge at Ramstein Air Base, Sept. 10. The 86th MXS AGE flight is responsible for maintaining the flood lights, generators and heaters along the flightline during OAR.
As of Sept. 9, the AGE flight has dispensed approximately 11.2K gallons of fuel for over 138 light carts and have delivered more than 40 heaters.
“My main priority during this operation is to make sure all of the lights and heaters on the flightline have fuel,” said Senior Airman Casey Dean, 86th MXS AGE journeyman. “Lighting is important out on the flightline at night, I couldn’t imagine if all the lights went out at the same time, so I take my job seriously. I have to refuel the lights and heaters daily, so between the two I dispense around 600 gallons of fuel a day.”
In addition to providing infrastructure for Operation Allies Refuge, the AGE Airmen have successfully navigated a 600 percent surge in 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing air traffic.
“We’re working longer hours, but I know it’s for a good cause,” said Airman First Class Christian Governale, 86th MXS AGE journeyman. “It’s satisfying to know that we are making an impact.”
The 86th MXS AGE flight has had a measurable impact on the quality of life of the evacuees in the pods. AGE Airmen donated approximately 200 stuffed animals for evacuee children and have provided, cut and fit foam for the creation of baby bassinets. With approximately 18,300 equipment deliveries and hundreds of man hours they have embraced the tenet of service before self.
“I think my Airmen have had the greatest impact on OAR,” said Senior Master Sgt. Dominik Gutierrez, 86th MXS AGE flight chief. “We’re right in the center of everything, we have our hands in every aspect of what’s going on.”
The resiliency of the AGE flight Airmen and their ability to lead and move the mission forward has impressed their leadership.
“I am proud of our Airmen,” said Master Sgt. Kyle Shoup, 86th MXS AGE assistant flight chief. “They come in with a positive attitude and have done everything we’ve asked. They never ask when they’ll get a break, and are always looking for the next thing to do.”

Three U.S. Air Force Airmen make final preparations for a 37th Airlift Squadron C-130J Super Hercules aircraft out of Ramstein Air Base, Germany, to drop 16 Polish special forces members at an abandoned runway near Biala Podlaska, Poland, during Aviation Detachment Rotation 21-4, Sept. 15.
This operation is the culmination of precision work to secure a drop zone and landing zone with the Polish special forces, executed by a cross-functional, rapidly deployable U.S. Air Force team designed to assess and open airbases and perform initial airfield operations enabling rapid standup of combat
operations anywhere.
“We go in light, and when the operation is done, we can get out quick,” said Tech. Sgt. James Supernault, 435th Contingency Response Group air traffic controller. “This is why our team exists.”
Supernault and his team provide operational guidance on this competency to Polish special forces members as they demonstrate their ability to open an airfield, off load assets and prepare a rapid and safe departure of aircraft.
“We are still in the process of building the combat controller competency in the Polish military,” said Lucas, Polish special forces combat controller section commander. “This exercise gives us an opportunity to learn and share information.”
The 435th CRG team can assess the validity of an airfield anywhere, and the work starts far before the team receives their first aircraft.
“Before we get to a location, we look at imagery and prior surveys for anything that may present big issues to our aircraft or personnel,” said Tech. Sgt. Benjamin Stewart, a 435th Contingency Response Group airfield manager. “When we arrive on location, we get eyes on and assess anything that could pose a safety hazard.”
The team assesses both the safety above and below the ground.
“As an engineer, I inspect landing zones by testing for weak surface areas and ensure gradients are within tolerance so that aircraft can safely conduct operations,” said Staff
Sgt. Cody Paynter, 435th Contingency Response Group engineer. “If the surface is strong enough, and there are no obstructions, we can land an aircraft anywhere.”
As a three-man team, Supernault, Stewart and Paynter, shared their knowledge with Polish special forces members, and successfully secured both the landing zone and drop zone for this exercise.
“My mission and responsibility as an air traffic controller is to ensure the safety of arriving and departing aircraft, while expediting the flow of air traffic,” Supernault said. “Additionally, I am responsible for the safety of personnel and equipment being dropped and that they drop in the correct location. Each time we come to Poland, Polish forces increase their capabilities, and I’m here on the ground with them to make sure everything goes seamlessly.”
The interoperability between U.S. and Polish forces continues to play an important role in NATO mission readiness.
“This exercise is a chance to build our self-confidence and our
breadth of knowledge about combat control work,” Lucas said. “We have the opportunity to learn from the best teachers, because the U.S. is the world leader in this kind of work. For us, any contact during a live exercise to improve tactics and to conduct runway operations, including safely landing an aircraft, is exactly what we’re looking for.”
Aviation Detachment Rotations are bilateral training exercises and deployments designed to enhance partner interoperability, maintain joint readiness, and assure our regional allies. These events occur across the U.S. European Command area of responsibility, and U.S. aircraft and Airmen have participated in these rotations since 2012.
With so many organizations and individuals supporting the Afghan evacuee mission at Ramstein Air Base and Rhine Ordnance Barracks, it’s really no surprise the ripple effect from all this support can be felt across the Kaiserslautern Military Community.
One ripple — which is more of a wave — is effecting the Logistics Readiness Center RheinlandPfalz Drivers Testing and Training Station. For the first two weeks of Operation Allies Welcome, Ramstein closed its doors to its drivers testing and training facility so their personnel could be diverted to augment the OAW mission. And for the past week, the Ramstein facility is operating by appointment only, Mondays through Wednesdays.
That leaves the team at the 405th Army Field Support Brigade’s LRC Rheinland-Pfalz Drivers Testing and Training Station with a lot more customers to serve — both Army and Air Force.
“We’re the only other drivers testing and training station within the KMC,” said Jeffrey G. Morrison, installation transportation officer, LRC RheinlandPfalz, 405th AFSB.
The LRC Rheinland-Pfalz Drivers Testing and Training Station is now supporting both Army and Air Force personnel and their family members in the KMC with all their drivers testing and training needs, Morrison said.
“The overall impact for the last 14 days? We’ve increased our workload by 76 percent,” said Morrison. “And that includes multiple missions.”
The LRC Rheinland-Pfalz Drivers Testing and Training Station is responsible for validating that all newly arrived personnel have completed the required drivers training and testing. The office is also responsible for issuing all U.S. Army Europe drivers’ licenses when the training and testing portions are complete. In addition, they are responsible for all renewal and replacement licenses, they provide information and support memorandums to KMC personnel interested in obtaining international drivers licenses, and they conduct non-tactical vehicle training and testing as well as motorcycle training and testing.
“They’re doing an outstanding
job providing all this support to the KMC,” said Morrison. “There has been numerous comments from Air Force personnel in the last couple of weeks praising them for going above and beyond.”
“Their friendly, supportive attitude has been superb,” Morrison added. “I firmly believe that I have the best drivers testing and training station in Europe. I’m very proud of each and every one of them.”
The LRC Rheinland-Pfalz Drivers Testing and Training Station is supporting Operation Allies Welcome by covering down for the Air Force and at the same time supporting hundreds, if not thousands, of community members across the KMC with all their drivers testing and training needs.
When it comes to providing dayto-day installation services, LRC Rheinland-Pflaz directs, manages and coordinates a variety of operations and activities in support of U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pflaz and the KMC.
LRC Rheinland-Pflaz reports to the 405th AFSB, which is assigned to U.S. Army Sustainment Command and under the operational control of the 21st
Theater Sustainment Command, U.S. Army Europe and Africa.
The brigade is headquartered in Kaiserslautern, Germany, and provides materiel enterprise support to U.S. Forces throughout
Europe and Africa — providing theater sustainment logistics; synchronizing acquisition, logistics and technology; and leveraging U.S. Army Materiel Command’s materiel enterprise
to support joint forces. For more information on the 405th AFSB, visit the official website at www. afsbeurope.army.mil and the official Facebook site at www. facebook.com/405thAFSB.
On Sept. 29, the U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Project inclusion Working Group will host their second Diversity and Inclusion in the Workplace Symposium. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 3:30
p.m. at the Clay Kaserne Chapel. The last symposium in March was held virtually, while this one will shift to in-person participation.
The garrison has partnered once again with the University of Maryland Global Campus in bringing four different sessions for the workforce to engage and interact
with. All garrison Soldiers, Civilians and local national employees are encouraged to attend and the day will also start and end with remarks from Deputy Garrison Commander, Mitchell Jones.
The four sessions will cover a range of topics — “Cultivating Empathy Through Literature,”
“Emotional Intelligence and Diversity Consciousness,” “The Business Case for Diversity and Inclusion,” and “Cultural Intelligence.” These sessions will be presented by Dr. Jessica Stock, Kathy So, Dr. Bert Jarreau, and Dr. Steve Varela respectively.
There will also be an open
panel discussion during a lunch break between the second and third sessions. Lunch will be hosted by UMGC on site with refreshments from Subway.
At the symposium in March, just over 130 attendees from across the Wiesbaden footprint participated from various garrisons and commands.
About 140 Soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 6th Field Artillery Regiment, 41st Field Artillery Brigade arrived at Ramstein Air Base, Sept. 2, to help with Operation Allies Refuge.
Through Operation Allies Refuge, the Army is providing temporary housing, medical, and logistical support to the Department of State and the Department of Homeland Security for Afghan special immigrants and their families.
“I think there’s a lot of compassion, the Soldiers have a lot of
compassion for what they see,” explains Cpt. Robert Straskulic, a battery commander assigned to the 1-6 FAR, 41st FAB. “They’re involved in a real-world event that is affecting the lives of people that helped us, it’s kinda giving back to those that have helped us.”
Ramstein Air Base is a transit center that provides a safe place for the evacuees to complete their paperwork while security and background checks are conducted before they continue on to their final destination.
In order to keep the visitors fed, the Soldiers are up early prepping for breakfast. After
dinner things slow down, they take this time to walk around camp and make sure everything is clean. Some will also join a game of volleyball or soccer with the Afghan children.
While here, Afghan evacuees are placed into temporary dwellings, called pods, that have been constructed along the flightline resembling a small city.
“We’ve been assigned pods one and three,” Straskulic said. “We have a team that does all the meals and they’ve been linked in with the Air Force counterparts, making these meals, making the snacks and getting that all prepped.”
The 41st FAB Soldiers are doing the behind the scenes work, and doing it efficiently. For a task that would normally take 15-20 personnel, they complete it with just eight.
“With the Army you give us a task and we’re just, alright how can we make this happen efficiently and faster and sustain it,” adds Sgt. Gage Thibert, a fire control specialist assigned to the 1-6 FAR, 41st FAB. “That’s what we did on our first day here, we made 5,000 meals in just a couple hours.”
Depending on the time of day or night, the Soldiers can be seen inside the pods cleaning and taking out the trash and making sure the living conditions are
acceptable. This work is almost non-stop, 24 hours-a-day.
Straskulic said they went from 12-hour shifts to eight, so Soldiers could have a little bit more time off and still have someone here and available 24 hours-a-day.
Thibert said preparing for Operation Allies Refuge was similar to prepping for the field.
“We have a set, we need to get this done, we need it done by this time frame, so we’re kinda used to prepping for the field,” he described. “We’re going to make sure everything is done, we got this amount of time to do it, we’re gonna get it done before that in case something changes and we need to be ready.”

FORT RUCKER, Ala. — Challenges created by the pandemic have left many feeling stressed and isolated. During times like these, relationships and interpersonal connections to family and friends are vital to a person’s wellbeing.
As the Department of Defense and the Army observe Suicide Prevention Month this September, officials say it’s critical for people to remember the role that social connections play in preventing suicide, and that help is always available.
This year’s theme, “Connect to Protect: Support is Within Reach,” emphasizes the importance of personal connections and encourages everyone to “reach” for support when in need, says Traci Waters, Army Substance Abuse Program manager.
“A person who is at risk for suicide has often isolated themselves from their loved ones,” said Waters. “Our personal connections can help keep us from getting to a dark place that may cause us to contemplate suicide.”
Connections, whether between friends or family, can be protective factors against suicide, continued Waters. “Building those connections and maintaining them is key to supporting our mental health.”
Raising awareness of suicide prevention and available support
resources is only a part of the reason for observing Suicide Prevention Month. Equally important is the emphasis on recognizing when someone is in need and identifying ways to offer help. Sometimes, offering a helping hand can be as simple as lending an ear, says Waters.
“If you know someone who’s going through a difficult time, one of the ways you can support them is to simply offer a listening ear. Striking up a conversation is probably the easiest way to help them feel comfortable sharing their concerns,” said Waters. Sharing personal experiences can also help people establish common ground. Once someone feels comfortable enough
to share their concerns, “hopefully, they will feel comfortable seeking help as well.”
How can people get help? “The easiest way is to start with your leader,” said Waters. Leaders can help guide people in the right direction to get the support they need. Individuals can also reach out directly to community agencies.
“There are numerous organizations on the installation who are available to assist, including the Department of Behavioral Health, chaplains, the Military Family Life counselor, Army Community Services, and the Employee Assistance Program, located within the Army Substance Abuse
Program,” said Waters.
Another area of focus for this year’s observance is lethal means safety. “When we refer to lethal means, we’re talking about easy access to items that can be used to cause harm to oneself, like weapons, medications or sharp objects,” says Waters. “While everyone with access to these items is not necessarily a risk for suicide, a person who is at risk with easy access to such means could be at higher risk.”
While COVID-19 continues to create new challenges for everyone, the ASAP manager underscored the resources on post that remain available in spite of the pandemic. “There are a variety of ways that the pan-
demic has affected us all emotionally. We want everyone to know that we’re still here even though our services may be limited or adjusted. Please reach out and we will support you in every way we can.”
“Throughout September, it is important for each of us to focus on connecting to protect the servicemembers and military families in our lives. We have a moral duty to protect each other — now more than ever,” said Waters. “If you are concerned [for someone’s safety], or if they are at an imminent risk for suicide, do not leave them alone. Seek help immediately. Contact the Suicide Prevention LifeLine, 24/7, at (800) 273-8255 (press 1) or call a chaplain, a healthcare provider, an emergency room, or 9-1-1.”

Coffee shops fill with pumpkin spice lattés. Kitchens everywhere give off the delicious aroma of pumpkin pie or pumpkin bread. Children and parents alike sharpen their carving knives, ready to create the best jack o’lanterns ever.
But you’re here, in Germany. So…that means no pumpkin magic, right? Wrong!
In fact, Germany does an excellent job of celebrating pumpkins, even if the tradition of eating them frequently hasn’t quite caught on. This country has some of the best — and biggest — pumpkin celebrations in the world.
And many of those celebrations are happening right about…now. So if you’re mad about pumpkins (and even if you’re not), get ready to experience how pumpkins are celebrated in Germany.
The Great Pumpkin Fest in Ludwigsburg
Billing itself as the largest of its kind in the world, the pumpkin fest in Ludwisburg is truly awe inspiring. The artists, organizers and gourd-philes who host the festival use nearly half a million pumpkins. Some of the pumpkin artwork is staggeringly cool. You’ll find pumpkin sculptures of animals, landscapes and pop culture figures.
It’s not just the visuals that
make the Ludwisburg Fest a great one. There, you’ll find people who also appreciate the magic that exists when it comes to cooking with and eating pumpkins. There are sweet and savory treats for every palate imaginable.
And best of all (especially during this era), the festivities are accessible and held out -
side. Ludwisburg is 30 minutes north of Stuttgart and just under 2 hours southeast of Kaiserslautern.
Pumpkin appreciation in the KMC
There are also options for outdoor pumpkin fun for those who live in the Kaiserslautern area. This
year, the Hitscherhof Farm in Massweiler – just 30 minutes south of the KMC – is hosting a pumpkin exhibition September 25-26. Food, giant pumpkins and pumpkin flavored drinks will be on the menu, as will pony rides and a corn maze for children. Similarly, the Sunshine Pumpkin Farm in
Gerhardsbrunn — 30 minutes east of the KMC — will open its pumpkin fields and corn maze to visitors every weekend in October.
Even though you may not be in the land of pumpkin love this autumn, there are still a ton of opportunities in Germany. So get out there and enjoy the season!
