Agile Wolf 22: 435 CRG returns to Poland Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Jared Lovett 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 435th Contingency Response Group conducted Exercise Agile Wolf 22 at Koszalin, Poland, Sep. 11-20. Exercise Agile Wolf is a scalable airfield opening exercise that provides an increased number and variety of training opportunities, promotes innovation, and strengthens partnerships within the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing and around Ramstein Air Base. “This exercise puts our Airmen in an agile combat
employment environment where they have to utilize problem-solving techniques and puts their knowledge to the test in a controlled space,” said Lt. Col. Matt Stewart, Contingency Response Squadron commander. “This ultimately allows our team to hone their skills, push their limits, and increase readiness for real-world events when they arise.” The exercise kicked off with Airmen building a fully functioning remote base in two hours to use as their base camp for the duration of the exercise.

COMMENTARY: Suicide Awareness: The little things by Senior Airman Thomas Karol 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
Inspirational quotes lined the straight-away portion of the Suicide Prevention walk and run course at Ramstein Air Base, Sep. 10. Runners and walkers were able to take breaks, mingle and read the signs posted along the route. If you or someone you know needs help, contact the Veteran’s Crisis Line at 00800-1273-8255. someone to help put it into perspective. I could understand loss, but not the thought process behind suicide. I cannot quite understand why it happened. Then I met someone who had the experience to educate me. Before we met, this person had a desire to take their own life. She wanted to do it because of how many traumatic experiences she had to deal with. After a few days of contemplating whether or not to take her life, she decided she could not go through with it and pursued counseling where she found a new meaning to life. Her therapy sessions continue to this day. It was a long and painful journey, but it resulted in her still being alive and better than ever. There are places people can go to get the help they need. It can be just a phone call away, an online resource, or a short trip. I appreciate that the Air Force has resources
available to people who need it. Even though there are great places to go get support, how do we get the people who need it to those who can help? My suggested answer is us. The Airmen need to do it. It is on all of us to get people where help can be found, or even just lending an ear and empathizing with their situation. One of the things learned and found helpful was ACE: Ask, Care, Escort. The acronym is simple to remember and makes it easier to remember the process to help those suffering with feeling alone or depressed. There is no judgment; just people helping people. Suicide awareness and prevention is a complex topic that one person can’t solve on their own. What we can do as individuals is keep an eye on our friends and family and we will have a much better shot. It all starts with a question from a concerned friend.

Loss is something some people will experience in their lives. It is a constant part of who we are, and it can sometimes shape our personalities. This is why resilience is so important and can help us to deal with difficult situations. As a person who has experienced loss, I would like to share my experience, how I found my way out and was able to move on from it. Loss can sometimes be expected with an older family member or friend, and other times it is not, like a friend getting in a bad accident or taking their own life. All are still traumatic, and it is still never easy to hear about a loved one passing away. It can change so many things in our lives and make every moment feel like agony. There are ways to learn to move on, but it can be a slow, painful journey. Each time I heard the news that one of my friends took their life, it was never something I saw coming. All I could think at the time was why did they do this? Why didn’t they let me know they were going through something challenging? Why? This has happened to friends of mine in the military and in the civilian world. Suicide is not just an issue in the military. It is an epidemic that affects people from all walks of life. No matter who is impacted by suicide, directly or indirectly, many of the reasons leading up to the decision are similar, and ultimately come down to the individual feeling like the world would be better off without them. I wish I could have just reached my hand out and pulled them away from the situation; like shaking someone out of a bad dream. I wish I could have been there to help them with their suffering. We need to do better for the sake of the people around us. Some of the smallest actions can send the strongest messages. One of the toughest things I have found about dealing with the topic of suicide and loss is finding

AGILE WOLF from Page 1 Capabilities such as this, allow the 435th CRG and its partner units within the 435th AGOW to rapidly deploy anywhere within the United States Air Forces in Europe area of responsibility in a short amount of time. “Our team is constantly training to survive in a deployed environment,” said Senior Master Sgt. Andrew Gravett, 435th CRS senior enlisted leader. “They put that training to the test twice a year and set up a roof over their heads, a power grid, running water, communications systems, and everything else a base requires.” Over 80 Airmen, across 39 career fields, from the 435th CRG participated in the exercise and ranged in services including aerial port, maintenance, security, medical, communications, and many more. The Airmen of the 435th CRG open airbases in support of joint partners and allies creating a logistics hub that can quickly reach the forward edge of any contingency to muster sustainable operations. “We constantly have to do these exercises to ensure that we’re ready to walk out of the door at a moment’s notice with the ability to assess, open, and operate an air base,” said Gravett. Recently, the 435th CRG played a pivotal role supporting Ukraine in their fight against Russian aggression by operating in Poland. “Our Contingency Response Group deployed to Southeast Poland to assess airfield options and open an air base to serve as a major logistical hub. The 435th CRG operated at Jasionka International Airport to receive and facilitate forward movement of aid for Ukrainian warfighters sent by the United States and its allies and partners,” said Stewart. The ability to successfully accomplish that monumental task depends upon tough unit training and a high state of readiness. “Agile Wolf enables our team members to take lessons learned from real world operations and train new members to the highest levels in preparation for future contingencies,” said Stewart. Exercise Agile Wolf has expanded significantly since its inception in 2019 and 435th CRG leadership is always looking to add new and more robust ways to enhance the skills and readiness of its Airmen at all levels.

Storytellers: Bringing light to suicide awareness, prevention Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Edgar Grimaldo 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Members from the Kaiserslautern Military Community attended a Storytellers event, hosted by the 86th Airlift Wing Integrated Resiliency Office at Ramstein Air Base, Sep. 26. The Storytellers event at Ramstein is held every September during Suicide Prevention month. Guest speakers shared experiences about something they either witnessed or traumatic events they have been through that led to a downfall in their mental health. The intent was to create an environment where the speakers and audience members were vulnerable together to create a dialogue about mental health and resiliency. “It’s important that people have discussions and openly communicate about mental health and remove the bias that surrounds it,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Ryan Miccio, 603rd Air Operations Center Future Operations Division multidomain strategic center planner. The Storytellers event was cre-
of community to identify the signs that can lead to saving a life, said Miccio. It’s important to build those friendships and bonds that set the baseline of what's normal before you can identify when someone is acting out of the ordinary. “You are never truly alone in life,” said Dan Miller, retired U.S. Marine Corps sergeant major. “There are people whom you might not know personally who care about your life. There are people in your life that you must give a chance to help you when things seem to be so overwhelming that you feel nothing can help. “Suicide is not just an individual act; it is something that affects many. If you need help just ask and you will receive.” U.S. Air Force Capt. Ryan Miccio, 603rd Air Operations Center Future Operations Division Multidomain strategic center planner, shares past experiences dealing with mental illness during the Storytellers event at Ramstein Air Base, Sep. 26. The Storytellers event focused on personal stories and highlighted various resources to support members who might be struggling with mental health.

Introducing Local Businesses:
Heartbeat Crisis Pregnancy Center e.V. Ramstein
The Heartbeat Crisis Pregnancy Center Ramstein Pregnant… just the word sparks joy in the hearts of many women, and fear in the hearts of others. Most of the time, learning that a woman is pregnant brings great excitement and anticipation to a family. But what about those times when a pregnancy is unplanned or is unexpected? To whom does a woman turn when she feels unprepared to bring a new life into the world? It is with a passion to help these women that the Heartbeat Crisis Pregnancy Center in Ramstein was born. The Heartbeat Crisis Pregnancy Center Ramstein, is an international organization with the purpose of defending life by supporting women in crisis pregnancies as well as to bring healing and wholeness to those who are expecting or are concerned that they may be expecting. Heartbeat Crisis Pregnancy Center Ramstein, in conjunction with Heartbeat International,
seeks to offer counseling and other services to those in unexpected pregnancies who feel they have no options and no hope. Heartbeat exists to walk with them through their confusing and challenging time. Founded in 1995 as the Kaiserslautern Crisis Pregnancy Center (KCPC), the focus was to meet the needs of women and families that found themselves with more questions than answers. A group of concerned people from many walks of life began meeting, planning, and working to open a local center that would address needs, both physical and emotional, with a loving and non-judgmental approach. The result was the 1997 opening of the Kaiserslautern Center in Einsiedlerhof. In 2010 the Heartbeat board of directors determined that moving the facilities to Ramstein would make the center’s services available to a broader community, including Germans, Americans, and other nationalities needing assistance in their times of crisis. The Heartbeat Center is located at:
1st chairman Gilbert Wood and administrative assistant Ute Menne in front of the Heartbeat Crisis Pregnancy Center in Ramstein.
Am Stutzenwald 2 66877 Ramstein-Miesenbach near the Ramstein EDEKA and just 300 meters from the Ramstein bahnhof/train station. 1 CBCS establishes communications through Heavy Rain
French and U.S. Service members disassemble an antenna used by the French during exercise Heavy Rain III at Breitenbach, Sep. 15. During the exercise, teams were tasked to establish and maintain communication in a simulated contested environment with the Wing Operations Center by using alternate forms of communication or switching to alternate locations.
Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Alexcia Givens 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 1st Combat Communications Squadron hosted the third evolution of their annual Heavy Rain exercise at and around Ramstein Air Base, Sep. 12-16. Heavy Rain III integrated communicators, operators, and aggressors from five branches of the Armed Forces in order to test their ability to provide operationally relevant capabilities at the speed of need in a rapidly changing operating environment. During the exercise, service members from the 1st CBCS, 1st Air and Space Communications Squadron, 1st Communications Maintenance Squadron, 4th Air
Support Operations Group, 44th Expeditionary Signal Battalion, Joint Communications Support Element, 527th Space Aggressor Squadron, and partners from the French military were tasked with detecting and overcoming interference in the Electromagnetic Spectrum. “This exercise challenges how we detect and resolve communications interference, which will better prepare us to operate on the modern battlefield” said Senior Airman Evan McDonald, 1st CBCS tactical communications planner. The French military and 527th SAS challenged service members’ ability to maintain C2 communications with the Wing Operations Center and perform other mission specific tasks. Once interference was detected,
U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Markus McNally, 1st Combat Communications Squadron client systems technician, operates a radio during exercise Heavy Rain III at Breitenbach, Sep. 15.
French service members disassemble an antenna used during exercise Heavy Rain III at Breitenbach, Sep. 15. During the exercise each team was assessed on their ability to establish and sustain communication with the Wing Operations Center in a simulated contested environment while receiving interference from members of the French military and the 527th Space Aggressor Squadron.
teams explored alternative forms of communications to maintain contact with the WOC, or maneuvered to another location to reestablish the connection. The WOC tracked the team's movements and advised them on how to proceed when needed. The exercise approximated the operating environment that Airmen and their joint counterparts expect to experience during a high-end fight. Airmen were expected to demonstrate the ability to perform communications related tasks across a broad spectrum that goes beyond their AFSC-specific training. Master Sergeant Chuck Fletcher, the lead planner for the exercise, believes it is an operational imperative that Airmen perform well in several disciplines: “As we expand our skillsets
to become multi-capable Airmen within the communications community, we can look at how the teams are formed and work toward not just specializing in radio or network, but being expeditionary communicators. If we come to the modern battlefield with yesterday’s equipment and training, we are going to be in a tough spot. We are pushing ourselves to think, train, and operate forward which means that we are encouraging Airmen to push boundaries while staying moral, ethical and legal.” As the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing modernizes its mission, Heavy Rain prepares communicators to adapt to the everchanging operating environment. “The wing is looking at the near-peer threat, whomever they
may be. Our role as communicators is to be the connective tissue that connects key decision makers to the tactical edge. Obviously, mission command will play an enormous role in a near-peer fight but the winning commander is likely to be the one that can command and control his or her forces most effectively” said Fletcher. “It is important to have exercises like this to challenge our members outside of their comfort zone,” said McDonald. “Heavy Rain III gave members the experience of needing to adapt on the spot in a stressful environment. We will do this again and we will push the boundaries even farther next time. My colleagues never cease to amaze me with their ability to adapt to the challenges we throw at them.”
U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Christian Jones, 1st Combat Communication Squadron tactical systems supervisor, sets up an antenna during exercise Heavy Rain III at Breitenbach, Sep. 15. The exercise provides opportunities for service members to receive training and operate in an environment similar to one with limited time, manpower and resources.

Airlifter of the Month — Insurance broker to USAF
Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Jordan Lazaro 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Jackson Elliott worked a few different jobs prior to joining the U.S. Air Force at 25 years old, including landscaping and becoming an insurance broker. He grew up in San Diego, California. Growing up he went to the beach, spent time with friends, played video games, and rode dirt bikes. Elliot said he did not like what he was doing much and wanted to do something more exciting, so he did something about it. “I went down to my local recruiter and I left two months later,” he said. After arriving at Ramstein Air Base in September 2019, now Senior Airman Jackson Elliott, 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron ground transportation support operator, made himself known to his leadership by his commitment to his work and team, which quickly resulted in well-deserved accolades. “Senior Airman Elliott has demonstrated his service and commitment to being a truly professional ground transportation operator,” said Capt. Mark Rollyston, 86th VRS ground transportation flight commander. Since arriving at Ramstein, Elliott contributed to numerous ground transportation missions,
including multiple cargo movements to Poland, and multiple trips to stage equipment to aid in the Ukraine conflict. To continue support for the local mission, Elliott aided in the disposition of a G-222 aircraft that was no longer needed for military transportation of cargo. This aircraft was stripped and relocated to the Disposition Services Defense Logistic Agency to clear the ramp and make more room for additional aircraft at RAB. Additionally, Elliott demonstrated his maneuverability during the U.S. European Command change of command while also being selected as part of the U.S. Secretary of Defense’s motorcade which mobilized staff members to various locations in Stuttgart. His efforts ensured the safety and smooth transition of transport while the U.S. Secretary of Defense and his team were here. During Operation Allies Welcome, Elliott spent 12 hours a day moving evacuees from the plans to the tents where they began their in-processing at Ramstein. At times, he would spend up to four consecutive hours shuttling evacuees and if he was not doing that, he was helping his team clean the buses for the other drivers. “Providing transportation for Afghan evacuees during Operation Allies Welcome was one of my most memorable
moments,” Elliott said. “They were long days, but it was an amazing experience that I will never forget.” Because of his work ethic and dedication, Elliott was awarded Airlifter of the Month for the 86th Airlift Wing during a presentation on Sep. 15. “Senior Airman Elliott is an absolute stellar example of what we would want as a ground transportation operator,” said Rollyston. “He embodies professionalism by always arriving early to ensure not only himself is squared away, but that his vehicles are squared away. Senior Airman Elliott exudes pride in not only what he’s driving, but who he’s driving and what he represents.” Elliott is passionate about pushing himself outside of his comfort zone. “If you are going to be successful, you have to be willing to do things that make you uncomfortable,” explained Elliott. He plans to continue down the path of serving his country by continuing his self-development and education to achieve his long-term goal of commissioning. “Joining the Air Force has given me a sense of pride and taught me some really good morals,” said Elliott. “It has shown me how to treat people, how to be a mentor and opportunities to gain role models.”
U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Jackson Elliott, 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron ground transportation support operator, drives a 10K forklift to the flightline at Ramstein Air Base, Sep. 16. Elliott learned to operate heavy equipment and vehicles to accomplish his daily mission including tractors, buses and a variety of government owned vehicles.
U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Jackson Elliott, right, 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron ground transportation support operator, gets coined by Col. Denny Davies, left, 86th Airlift Wing vice commander, at Ramstein Air Base, Sep. 15. Elliott was selected as Airlifter of the Month by his leadership for his continued professionalism and commitment to his job.

Host nation history: Day of German Unification
by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Oct. 3, 2022, marks the 32nd anniversary of the reunification of the Federal Republic of Germany after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Based on the Potsdam Agreement signed in August 1945 at the end of World War II, Germany was divided into four sectors governed by the United States,
Great Britain and France in the West and the Soviet Union in the East of the country. The Federal Republic of Germany, commonly referred to as West Germany, was established on May 23, 1949, with Bonn being the provisional capital. The foundation of the German Democratic Republic, often called East Germany, followed on Oct. 7. West Germany was comprised of 11 individual states and quickly
prospered with an open market economic system. East Germany, with its five states, relied on a planned and government directed economy under Soviet rule. Although they shared a common history, the people of Germany lived in a divided nation for the next forty years. Families were torn apart, some living in the West and other family members being restricted from leaving East Germany. Up to 2.5 million East Germans secretly fled
Soviet rule to seek freedom and build new lives in the West. The city of Berlin was also divided into four sectors and on Aug. 13, 1961 East German authorities began erecting a barrier around the western part of the city (West Berlin), engulfing the Brandenburger Tor (gate). The Brandenburg gate quickly became a symbol of the nation’s division. At first it was merely a barbed wire fence guarded by the East German national army, but over the years it grew to a total length of 75 miles of concrete blocks, up to 15 feet tall, topped with barbed wire, surrounding West Berlin and also dividing the city straight through the middle. In many instances the structure was erected as a double wall with a “death strip” of 100 yards in between the rows of blocks. Several checkpoints were established between the zones, the most famous being “Checkpoint Charlie,” as an entry point between the Soviet and American sectors. As many as 140 people are said to have lost their lives attempting to flee East Berlin. At the same time, further walls were erected between the East and West German borders and only three transit routes allowed for vehicle travel to Berlin, which was located in the middle of the German Democratic Republic. By the late 1980s, East Germans became increasingly discontent with the overall political situation, government directed economic mismanagement, little to no personal freedom and strict travel
restrictions. In a series of peaceful “Monday demonstrations” in Leipzig and other major cities over months, the protestors vividly chanted “Wir sind das Volk!” (We are the people), eventually forcing the government to back down and surprisingly announce the opening of the border on the evening of Nov. 9, 1989. The overwhelmed guards at Bornholmer Strasse near Brandenburg Gate let East Berliners through without checking identities. The news spread like a wildfire and West Berliners greeted their Eastern counterparts in a warm welcome with champagne and flowers. After eleven months of negotiations between the two states, the reunification was formally completed in 1990 and Oct. 3 was declared as a German national holiday to celebrate the occasion. Berlin again became the capital of all 16 states. Anniversary events take place every year in rotating cities throughout Germany. One original block of the Berlin Wall was moved to the traffic circle at the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center on Ramstein Air Base, in 2021. The section of the wall was preserved and set in place by Airmen from the 86th Civil Engineer Group, with the western side with colorful graffiti symbolizing free “West Germany” and the backside the former East German state. On Monday, Oct 3, all public offices and stores in Germany will be closed in observance of the holiday.

21 TSC soldiers team up during Suicide Prevention Month by Eleanor Prohaska 21st Theater Sustainment Command Do you value your life? That question may be asked often during Suicide Awareness Month in September. “Value Your Life” event coordinators prompted roughly 250 21st Theater Sustainment Command Soldiers to think about their answers by carrying and then unloading life’s “burdens” at Rhine Ordnance Barracks, Kaiserslautern, Sep. 21. Service Members worked in teams to carry sandbags, symbolic of life stressors, through a 3.6 mile course that included stations staffed by support agencies including 21st TSC’s Unit Ministry Team, Ready and Resilient program, Behavioral Health, Military Family Life Counselors, the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Army Substance Abuse Program and Army Community Services. Throughout the course Soldiers learned about available resources and removed weight, symbolic of stress being lessened, with the help of others. Earlier this year, the Army announced it is implementing a science-based, public health approach to suicide prevention, with new, comprehensive and integrated policies. “This event is an integrated mind-body approach to Suicide Prevention Month,” said event coordinator Sky Clarke, 21st TSC Comprehensive Fitness Coordinator. “The goal of the event is to acknowledge the real weight, represented by the sandbags, felt by the mind and body when stressors are added to life. “As participants learn about the support agencies available, the weight is lessened. Making this a team event is unique and reinforces the importance of connection and supporting each other through hard times.” Clarke said the team concept and the opportunity for Soldiers to meet the people who work at the different agencies is key to strengthening connections and increasing the likelihood of people reaching out for help when they need it. A major source of stress for Soldiers is finances, according to accredited Financial Counselor, and Financial Readiness Specialist Gary Strong, USAG RheinlandPfalz, ACS. During Value Your Life, Strong loaded Soldiers down with sandbags representing financial stressors such as housing and transportation. “We would like Soldiers to understand that almost every person has financial stress,” said Strong. “Service Members even more so
“It’s not a bad thing to go to somebody for help if you need it. Don’t be afraid.” According to Clarke, the Value Your Life event was a true community effort. “I am so gratified by the amount of agency support that came together for this event,” said Clarke. “All the support agencies, plus Stars & Stripes providing giveaways and USO providing food. I’ve been inspired by how much everyone has wanted to help put this event on for our Soldiers to let them know that if they are going through hard times, there is someone to turn to. From battle buddies, leaders, family or support agencies — we are all here for each other.” U.S. Army Soldiers belonging to 30th Medical Brigade group together for a photo at the start of the 3.6 mile “Value Your Life” course at Rhine Ordnance Barracks, Kaiserslautern, Sep. 21. The 21st Theater Sustainment Command event raised awareness of stressors and resources available to deal with them. Photos by Pfc Samuel Signor
due to the nature of their mission requirements, PCS moves, temporary duties, and deployments. These financial stresses tend to exacerbate other stress. I refer to these as foundational stressors. They may not be causal to suicidal ideations, but they can make other stresses feel so overwhelming that they may lead to disastrous results.” Strong added that ACS Financial Readiness help is free and can help Soldiers relieve the causes of financial stressors. “This will allow them to concentrate on the aspects of their life that are most important,” said Strong. “Their relationships and interactions with others, their ability to gain valuable life experiences, and have a productive and memorable life.” USAG-Rheinland-Pfalz ASAP’s Suicide Prevention Office presented Soldiers with scenarios based on suicide risk and personal rela-
tionships, adding weight in the form of sandbags on the Soldier teams’ litters. According to Suicide Prevention Manager Lathan Newkirk, the sandbags represented the mental burdens caused by the scenarios. At a later station Soldiers were able to remove the “weight” by seeking help from the garrison’s helping agencies. “The main thing I want them to understand is that help is available and there is absolutely no need for them to suffer in silence,” said Newkirk. “The garrison’s agencies such as ours are there to support them. We are all in the fight together. Our jobs exist to support them as warfighters and we all have a vested interest in meeting their needs. They deserve our support because of what they do for our country each and every day.” Pfc. Quentin Tennant, an ammunitions specialist with, 8th
Ordnance Company, said he appreciated the opportunity to participate in Value Your Life with his co-workers and friends. “This was a very good teambuilding exercise,” said Tennant. “We learned about a lot of the help we can get if we ever find ourselves, or our friends or buddies in these [stressful] conditions.” Tennant believes events like Value Your Life have a positive impact. “Suicide prevention, to me, means coming in to work the next day and still having my battle buddy there.” One of Tennant’s battle buddies, fellow ammunitions specialist Pfc. Carmen Avila, 8th Ordnance Company, said the event encouraged Soldiers to reach out for help. “They let people know that if you are ever going through anything, any type of stress, or anything is on your shoulders you can relieve it by talking to people,” said Avila.

It ensures that whatever you share in your heart and mind stays between myself, as a chaplain, or a religious affairs Airman.” With many tasks being given to Airmen to complete the mission, being mentally well can help relieve
stress. Regardless of if a person is religious or not, they can make appointments to go see a chaplain. “We want to validate what you believe, or do not believe, if it is meaningful and relevant to you,” he said. Many people in the U.S. Air Force are familiar with the four pillars of health and wellness: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Obstetrics, Gynecology access limited at LRMC Story and photo by Marcy Sanchez Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Public Affairs
• Priority 5: All other TRICARE eligible persons • Priority 6: Non-TRICARE eligible persons (e.g. general schedule federal employees, Army and Air Force Exchange Services and Department Of Defense Education Activity employees)
Landstuhl Regional Medical Center’s Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic will limit patient empanelment to Active-Duty beneficiaries only with space-available care for Active-Duty dependents. These restrictions will remain until further notice. According to clinic leadership, the curtailed capacity is a result of constrained resources and staffing. “Our goal is to provide highquality, compassionate, and safe patient care. If we can’t guarantee this to our beneficiaries, and risks are too costly, we will prioritize the safety of our patients above all else,” said U.S. Army Col. Andrew Landers, commander, LRMC. ees, family members enrolled in TRICARE Select and non-TRICARE beneficiaries on a space-available basis, meaning if an appointment is available and not already booked, then a retiree or eligible civilian may be seen. However, availability of these appointments varies widely based on clinic staffing and support to operational units. MTFs provide health care to beneficiaries according to the following basic priorities as deter-
mined by DoD and TRICARE policy: • Priority 1: Active-duty service members • Priority 2: Active-duty Family members enrolled in TRICARE Prime • Priority 3: Retirees, their Family members and survivors who are enrolled in TRICARE Plus • Priority 4: Active-duty Family members who are not enrolled in TRICARE Prime
Priority is given to Active-Duty Service Members and their family members to ease the burden of navigating unfamiliar healthcare systems, allowing Service Members to perform their military service without worry. Priority 2 beneficiaries who are not able to be seen at the LRMC OB/GYN Clinic, and those in other priority categories, will be referred to a host nation network provider through the LRMC Referral Management Office. Additionally, all beneficiaries will be afforded the option to receive care with host nation network providers if they choose, including Active-Duty Service Members. Current patients receiving obstetric care at the LRMC OBGYN Clinic will also have the choice to request referral to a network provider. LRMC’s Host Nation Patient Liaison Office is available to assist with translation services, host nation facility information / environment of care, determine specific assistance needs and accompany patients on first visits if available.

gourds pop to life all across the country. Coffee shops fill with pumpkin spice lattés. Kitchens everywhere give off the delicious aroma of pumpkin pie or pumpkin bread. Children and parents alike sharpen their carving knives, ready to create the best jack o’lanterns ever. But you’re here, in Germany. So…that means no pumpkin magic, right? Wrong! In fact, Germany does an excellent job of celebrating
pumpkins, even if the tradition of eating them frequently hasn’t quite caught on. This country has some of the best — and biggest — pumpkin celebrations in the world. And many of those celebrations are happening right about…now. So if you’re mad about pumpkins (and even if you’re not), get ready to experience how pumpkins are celebrated in Germany. The Great Pumpkin Fest in Ludwigsburg Billing itself as the largest of its kind in the world, the

Pumpkin appreciation in the KMC There are also options for outdoor pumpkin fun for those who live in the Kaiserslautern area. You can often find pumpkin festivals nearby that offer food, giant pumpkins, pumpkin-flavored drinks, pony rides and corn mazes. Similarly, the Sunshine Pumpkin Farm in Gerhardsbrunn — 30 minutes east of the KMC — will open its pumpkin fields and corn maze to visitors every weekend in October.

pumpkin fest at Ludwisburg is truly awe-inspiring. The artists, organizers and gourdphiles who host the festival use nearly half a million pumpkins. Some of the pumpkin artwork is staggeringly cool. You’ll find pumpkin sculptures of animals, landscapes and pop culture figures. It’s not just the visuals that make the Ludwisburg Fest a great one. There, you’ll find people who also appreciate the magic that exists when it comes to cooking with and eating pumpkins. There are sweet and savory treats for every palate imaginable. The exhibition will be open until Dec. 4. And best of all (especially during this era), the
