Rising to the Top Adventist HealthCare’s home health agency receives top quality rating from CMS
T
he Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has granted the Home Health division of Adventist HealthCare Home Care Services the highest quality rating for home health agencies. The five-star rating placed the division in the top 3 percent of agencies in the U.S. Adventist Home Care Services is one of only three agencies in Maryland to obtain the highest rating. Only 9,359 home care agencies qualified for the rating system through CMS and
only 239 received the five-star rating. This is the first time CMS has released ratings for home care agencies to help consumers more quickly identify differences in quality when selecting a provider. “With more than 40 years of experience providing care in homes throughout the region, we are honored to be one of the top-performing home health agencies in the U.S.,” says Keith Ballenger, vice president of Adventist HealthCare Home Care Services. “This rating recognizes

our commitment to providing the highest quality care in the homes of our patients.” Under the rating system, each agency receives a quality rating that encompasses its performance on nine measures that include providing care in a timely manner; teaching patients and family caregivers about prescribed drugs; and helping patients get better at specific activities, such as walking, moving around, getting in and out of bed, and bathing.

INNOVATIONS IN
Heart Care Discover three cardiac health advances that are available here and now
At Adventist HealthCare Washington Adventist Hospital, patients who undergo transradial cardiac catheterization can recover in comfort in a specialized lounge.
W
hen facing troubling heart conditions, people across our region have trusted Adventist HealthCare’s skilled physicians, nurses and cardiac care teams for more than 50 years. From bringing the most advanced and least invasive procedures to offering quality care that consistently achieves top honors, Adventist HealthCare’s cardiac experts continue to lead the way in making innovative heart care available to you close to home.
HEART SURGERY: RISING ABOVE THE REST
Adventist HealthCare Washington Adventist Hospital has been a pioneer in the field since performing its first heart surgery in 1962, and the Washington, D.C., region’s first open heart surgery less than a decade later. Today, the hospital ranks among the top 10 percent of heart centers nationwide, with the highest quality rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons for coronary artery bypass graft surgery and aortic valve replacement surgery. The society’s three-star rating
4|
demonstrates that patients experience fewer complications, better survival rates and optimal surgical techniques.
A LEADER IN TRANSRADIAL HEART CATHETERIZATION
One of the most advanced interventional cardiology procedures available through Adventist HealthCare is the transradial approach, which uses an artery in the wrist instead of the groin to gain access to heart arteries during cardiac catheterization. With this minimally invasive technique, patients benefit from less pain and reduced risk of bleeding, and they are mobile very soon after the procedure. Recently, Washington Adventist Hospital became the first in the Washington, D.C., metro area to open a state-of-the-art Radial Recovery
e Websit
Lounge, providing transradial patients with a more homelike setting for their short recovery. Specialized lounge chairs allow patients to rest upright and comfortably after the procedure.
HIGH-TECH METHODS TO MANAGE HEART DISEASE
To ensure our most critically ill patients receive the continued support they need after leaving the hospital, Washington Adventist Hospital offers telehealth, a remote home monitoring program, for those suffering from congestive heart failure and other chronic conditions. A scale, a blood pressure cuff and a glucometer are placed in the patient’s home, allowing the care team to evaluate vital signs and symptoms remotely and in real time to quickly detect and respond to health issues.

oon after her 40th birthday, Ana Medina had her first mammogram. With no symptoms or family history of breast cancer, she was shocked when her mammogram showed a concerning mass. She was referred to the Adventist HealthCare White Oak Breast Center for an ultrasound, biopsy and consultation with breast surgeon Cynthia Plate, MD. Tests showed that the mass was cancerous. “Hearing I had cancer was very hard,” Medina says. “I have three daughters, and it was a difficult time for them.”
The encouragement of family and friends helped Medina through a double mastectomy and chemotherapy. She also had the doctors, nurses and staff at the White Oak Breast Center on her side. “A cancer diagnosis is a very scary thing,” she says, “but they made me and my family feel supported.”
Center in Silver Spring and the Shady Grove Adventist Aquilino Cancer Center in Rockville, patients have access to the support and resources they need. Manu and other cancer navigators are available to work with the care team to support patients and their families throughout the cancer journey.
COMFORT IN A DIFFICULT TIME
COORDINATION IS KEY
The White Oak Breast Center is committed to providing a supportive experience for women while minimizing the time to diagnosis through coordination of care. Medina received an ultrasound and a biopsy on the same day. “We were able to get Ana in and diagnosed very quickly,” Dr. Plate says. “She has been able to receive much of her care—diagnosis, support, postoperative care—all in one place. Our center has a range of resources to help women feel comfortable and at ease during what can be a very difficult and stressful time.” For patients like Medina, the White Oak Breast Center’s nurse navigator, Michell Manu, RN, provides support from the very beginning of an abnormal finding to diagnosis, surgery and treatments. “Michell was very nice and helpful in orienting me,” Medina notes. Through Adventist HealthCare’s comprehensive cancer services that include the White Oak Breast
With surgery behind her, Medina stresses the importance of annual mammograms and the benefits of coordinated care. “My cancer was detected early, and the care I received from Dr. Plate and the all-women staff at the [White Oak Breast Center] was excellent,” she says. “It was a wonderful experience, and I felt very supported.”

my Kriewaldt Hudson was 21, a classical musician living in New York City and walking everywhere. That’s when the pain started, and she knew right away that it was bad. “I had to drop my bags to rest a bit, in the middle of the sidewalk,” she says. One doctor said she needed to stretch more. Another said it was depression. “I planned my day around the pain,” Kriewaldt Hudson says. “My world got smaller and smaller.” When she was in her 30s, a doctor finally took X-rays. He was shocked to see severe osteoarthritis in her hip. She was a young woman facing a hip replacement—but she couldn’t bear the thought of a year of rehabilitation. Kriewaldt Hudson knew she needed help: “What’s the point of being 36 and living like I was 70 years old?”
GETTING HELP
She met Sridhar Durbhakula, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center. He described a new procedure
called MAKOplasty, which is less invasive and offers a faster recovery than traditional hip replacement surgery. During the MAKOplasty procedure, computer guidance and robotics—“smart tools”—provide surgeons with greater accuracy so there are fewer risks, Dr. Durbhakula explains. “Using computer navigation and MAKOplasty, we’re removing less bone and putting the implant exactly where it needs to be placed, which improves implant longevity,” he says.
FEELING BETTER
Hours after her surgery, Kriewaldt Hudson was able to walk down the hall in the hospital. She went home that evening. “Immediately, it felt better,” she says. “By the second day, I didn’t even need crutches.” Today, Kriewaldt Hudson still can’t believe her “amazing, quick recovery.” “It’s very liberating,” she says. “I want to go to Europe and Disney World, which require a lot of walking that I can finally do.”

INNOVATIVE JOINT REPLACEMENT
The comprehensive Joint Replacement Center at Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center is the first in the region to perform MAKOplasty, a lessinvasive alternative to traditional hip replacement surgery. “Our program combines highly skilled physicians with a dedicated center where patients interact with nursing, physical therapy and rehabilitation specialists,” says Brett J. Hampton, MD, the program’s medical director. Adds Sridhar Durbhakula, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at Shady Grove Medical Center: “We’re able to help many people get back their lives.”

Digestive Distress?
QUALITY CARE STARTS HERE
Visit www. AdventistHealthCare.com/ Digestive-Health to learn more about the Digestive Health Program at Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center.
Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center takes a team approach to identifying and treating a range of disorders
A
pproximately 70 million Americans suffer from digestive disorders, ranging from heartburn to colon cancer. Whether common or complex, many diseases of the digestive tract can be effectively treated or prevented. Earlier this year, Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center launched the comprehensive Digestive Health Program to help community members identify, treat and manage digestive conditions.
ONE TEAM, MANY SPECIALTIES Adventist HealthCare’s program takes a team approach with personalized services to treat a range of digestive issues, from chronic gastrointestinal (GI) and acid-related diseases to GI infectious diseases and cancers. The road begins with Adventist HealthCare’s digestive health nurse navigator, Stephanie Smith. “Navigators are assigned to patients right at the beginning of their diagnosis, and they’re essentially a personal guide,” Smith says. With one call, the navigator can connect primary care doctors with digestive health experts to coordinate state-ofthe-art medical care for GI issues. Digestive health physicians in Shady Grove Medical Center’s program are board-certified in their specialties. They use the latest techniques and technologies to diagnose and manage everything from common digestive ailments to complex conditions, including: • Biliary tract disease • Celiac disease • Cirrhosis of the liver
• Colorectal cancer • Functional disorders (constipation, diarrhea, gas) • Heartburn/GERD • Hemorrhoids • Hepatitis • Inflammatory bowel disease • Irritable bowel syndrome • Pancreatitis • Peptic ulcer disease
A WEALTH OF RESOURCES
Beyond the physicians, other members of the Shady Grove Medical Center team help manage the quality-of-life issues that can come with digestive troubles. Patients can access comprehensive nutrition services to help cope
with diet and appetite. An oncology social worker connects patients with community resources such as transportation, financial support programs, home health services and support groups. At Shady Grove Medical Center, digestive health patients and their families also have access to behavioral health specialists, surgeons, chaplains and cancer researchers. Throughout the treatment process, Smith, the digestive health nurse navigator, will serve as the patient’s advocate and liaison, helping to manage appointments, coordinate services and educate patients and their families. “We want patients to feel empowered to make really good treatment decisions,” she says.

W
hen Jennifer and Mathew Goodman’s 3-year-old son, Eli, had a difficult time focusing in preschool and interacting with other children, they felt frustrated and helpless. Eli was hyperactive, withdrawn from other toddlers and emotionally disconnected from his family. “Simple things such as sitting down for dinner as a family became a challenge because Eli struggled to control his impulses,” Jennifer says. Determined to find a program that could help her son, Jennifer searched the Internet and found the Therapeutic Nursery Program (TNP) at the Lourie Center for Children’s Social & Emotional Wellness. The TNP is a specialized preschool that helps children ages 3 to 5 with emotional
and behavioral problems that interfere with success in mainstream preschool or day care. “The program helps foster social, intellectual and emotional growth in children by helping them build secure and trusting relationships with their parents, teachers and peers,” says Jimmy Venza, PhD, senior director of clinical operations and research at the Lourie Center. The goal is to help children successfully transition to mainstream preschool or day care. The TNP staff worked with Eli to establish trust and to help him feel safe in the classroom. Through structured learning and therapeutic play, he learned to understand his emotions and control his behavior. “After only a few months in the program, we saw noticeable improvements in Eli’s behavior,” Mathew says. “He gained confidence
and was able to express his feelings in a much healthier way.” Eli, now 8, is thriving at school and at home. “The Therapeutic Nursery Program helped Eli feel emotionally safe and secure in a classroom environment,” Jennifer adds. “He is now making friends, reading at grade level, and flourishing in the second grade.”
At age 3, Eli struggled to focus in school and stay connected at home. His parents, Jennifer and Mathew Goodman, took him to the Therapeutic Nursery Program at the Lourie Center. Today, Eli, now 8, is thriving.

WANT TO KEEP YOUR EMPLOYEES HEALTHY?
PRIORITY:
Wellness
Wellness program aims to keep Adventist employees healthy and productive
P
oor health can be costly, particularly for employers. Given the rising rates of chronic health conditions, finding effective ways to improve employee health is good business. With one of the largest workforces in Montgomery County, Adventist HealthCare is fulfilling its mission of improving the health of people and communities within its own community of 6,000 employees.
As part of its wellness initiative, Adventist HealthCare encourages employees to take breaks and be active outside.
“We recognize that helping our employees obtain optimal health and wellness is good for our business, but more important, it is part of our mission,” says Terry Forde, president and CEO of Adventist HealthCare. Adventist HealthCare began its current employee health journey in 2009 by matching high-risk employees with personal health nurses and coordinating care through primary care physicians. Adventist HealthCare also implemented wellness programs such as annual health risk assessments, an online wellness portal, discounted gym memberships, on-site activities and other wellness incentives through the health system’s employee wellness division, LifeWork Strategies. The changes reduced the cost of employee health plans and improved the health of employees. From 2011 to 2014, Adventist HealthCare’s per-member, per-month health plan costs rose just 4 percent compared with the national average increase of 19 percent. “Data show that healthy and active employees are more productive and engaged, and that helps us meet our mission,” says Marta Brito-Perez, Adventist HealthCare’s senior vice president and chief human resources officer. Lifework Strategies, Adventist HealthCare’s workplace wellness division, creates customized, effective employee wellness and assistance programs for both large and small companies. “We offer a one-stop shop for employers to access customized wellness solutions that improve employee health and productivity,” says Mindy Pierce, director of LifeWork Strategies.
Visit www. LifeWorkStrategies.com to request more information about how Adventist HealthCare LifeWork Strategies can help improve the health and well-being of your employees.
“We are different from other companies offering wellness services because LifeWork Strategies is part of Adventist HealthCare, which has been providing health and wellness services to this community for more than 100 years.”
EXTENDING THE REACH OF EMPLOYEE WELLNESS Adventist HealthCare’s employee wellness journey continues to expand through new programs. In 2014, the company began requiring spouses on the health plan to participate in health screenings and the health risk assessment program. Most recent, Adventist HealthCare began offering free fitness and work-life balance classes through wellness committees at its facilities including Adventist HealthCare Washington Adventist Hospital in Takoma Park and Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center in Rockville.

Advanced Wound Healing Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center opens new space for care of chronic wounds
T 10|
Adventist HealthCare wound centers provide specialized treatment for chronic or nonhealing wounds, which can include sores or wounds that have not significantly improved through normal medical care. Nonhealing wounds, which are associated with inadequate circulation, poorly functioning veins and immobility, lead to lower quality of life and possibly amputations. Typically, a wound that does not heal within 30 days is considered chronic and may require a specialized approach for healing. “Many patients come to us after having wounds for months and even years,” says Itamar Simhon, clinical manager of the Center for Advanced Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine at Washington Adventist Hospital. “Our multidisciplinary teams of doctors and experienced wound care nurses work together to correctly diagnose the causes of these wounds, choose the right treatments and partner with the patient to follow their treatment plan and restore their health.”

ocal athletes and others suffering from injuries and pain have a new, convenient option for treatment. In May, Adventist HealthCare Physical Health & Rehabilitation opened a new outpatient clinic in the Washingtonian RIO Sport&Health in Gaithersburg. The stateof-the-art clinic provides hands-on physical therapy and rehabilitation by certified manual therapists and sports medicine physicians who specialize in the treatment of athletic and orthopedic injuries.
EXPERT CARE, SPECIALIZED SERVICES
The clinic also focuses on manual therapy techniques and dry needling to assist with pain management. Dry needling involves a therapist pushing a very thin needle through the skin to stimulate trigger points, muscles or connecting tissue. The procedure releases tight muscle bands and decreases certain types of orthopedic pain.
“Our new location at Washingtonian RIO brings our expertise to a more convenient setting for patients,” says Elizabeth Kotroba, director of outpatient therapy at Physical Health & Rehabilitation. “As a leader in rehabilitative care, we use the latest technology and research to treat a range of conditions, helping patients return to their activities as quickly and safely as possible.”
Therapists design rehabilitation programs specific to each patient’s or athlete’s recovery needs. The clinic features an open gym with private treatment rooms and physician offices, as well as an anti-gravity treadmill, which uses groundbreaking technology to reduce recovery time from a sports-related injury or an orthopedic condition.
