Bringing Wellness to the Community

H

ospitals are generally seen as places where the very ill go for treatment of serious conditions at the hands of skilled physicians, nurses and staff. Adventist HealthCare is blessed to feature a number of our hospitals, which are recognized nationally for the high-quality care provided to patients. You can see many of these recognitions on the following pages.

However, in this era of health care reform, hospitals and health systems are now being asked to not only provide quality and compassionate care inside the hospitals, but to also encourage people to stay healthy and to provide communities with resources that encourage a culture of wellness.

Thankfully, Adventist HealthCare is already ahead of the curve due in large part to its more than 100 year history based upon Seventh-day Adventist principles of wellness.

For a number of years, Adventist HealthCare has had robust health and wellness programs based at our facilities and in the community. In 2012, we touched more than 60,000 lives through heart, cancer, vascular and other screenings. Through our Center on Health Disparities, we raise community awareness about local health disparities, improve capacity to deliver population-based care, and develop solutions to eliminate local disparities in health care.

Beyond health and wellness programs, in 2012 we continued to employ more primary care physicians and specialists through Adventist Medical Group, in order for the community to have improved access to care. We also were able to connect hundreds of physicians into electronic medical

record systems through our ACES Program, helping them have even more accurate and timely information about their patients.

And our work is not done. Over the upcoming months, you will begin to see information on more Adventist HealthCare programs that will bring our continuum of care into the community to provide population-based care.

Bringing Wellness to the Community

I

n keeping with our mission, Adventist HealthCare continues its longstanding tradition to bring the community to good health through our robust offering of health and wellness services throughout Montgomery, Prince George’s and

Frederick counties. Our facilities and programs served the community with approximately 650,000 encounters in 2012 as we provide care across the continuum to those whom we are privileged to serve.

Adventist HealthCare provides community health education and reaches thousands of people throughout Montgomery and Prince George’s County at events such as the annual Fiesta de las Madres and SalvadoranLatino Health Fair, and at places including the Rockville Senior Center, Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington and Gaithersburg Upcounty Senior Center.

Community events such as our annual Love Your Heart Expo are another way that Adventist HealthCare reaches out to help the community live a heart healthy life. More than 300 people attended the Feb. 9 event this year where Washington Adventist and Shady Grove Adventist Hospitals offered free heart health screenings, heart healthy cooking and lifestyle demonstrations and educational talks.

Excellence in Cardiac Care

C

hris’ ordinary day was interrupted when he suddenly lost the ability to speak a full sentence. His doctor called David Brill, M.D., interventional cardiologist at Washington Adventist Hospital, and instructed Chris to go directly to the hospital.

Doctors diagnosed a transient ischemic attack, which occurs when blood flow to part of the brain is briefly halted. And with a 5,000-mile crosscountry motorcycle trip just a few months away, the 57-year-old from Carroll County was shocked when doctors told him he would need open-heart surgery to remove a heart tumor. Paul Massimiano, M.D., heart surgeon and program director of cardiac surgery at Washington Adventist Hospital, performed the surgery.

“My entire team of doctors and nurses was truly concerned about my care and my health,” Chris says.

Before surgery, Chris started to have doubts that he would be able to recover in time for his scheduled motorcycle trip through Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and parts of Canada, but Dr. Massimiano put his mind at ease.

Sure enough, just a few months after surgery, Chris was able to take his cross-country motorcycle road trip as planned.

Successful open heart surgery at Washington Adventist Hospital allowed Chris to continue planning his 5,000-mile motorcycle trip, which he took just several months later.

Excellence in Cancer Care

V

aughn of Rockville diligently had his annual physical and prostate screening every spring for almost 20 years. Vaughn, a health-conscious former athlete, started annual prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screenings at age 40, after he lost his father to prostate cancer. His tests always came back normal until one day a physical showed an abnormal PSA test.

included a referral to Don Bridges, M.D., a radiation oncologist at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital.

Vaughn quickly met with Barry Aron, M.D., chair of urology at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital.

Further tests confirmed that Vaughn had prostate cancer. While he had several treatment options to consider, Dr. Aron worked with him on a plan, which

Vaughn decided to pursue an aggressive treatment option and in March 2011, instead of getting his annual physical and screening, he started his cancer treatment, which included hormone treatment followed by five weeks of radiation.

“My first inclination was to go the surgery route,” Vaughn says. “Then I met with Dr. Bridges and he talked with me for over three hours. He wanted me to make sure that I knew all of the pluses and minuses to my options.”

“I’m very pleased that I received such good treatment and care from the team at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital,” Vaughn says. “I am feeling wonderful these days.”

The Aquilino Cancer Center will open this fall as the first community-based, free-standing, comprehensive cancer center in Montgomery County, Md. It will be located on Adventist HealthCare’s Rockville campus, adjacent to Shady Grove Adventist Hospital.

A family history of prostate cancer prompted Vaughn to get checked every year. In 2010, those screenings saved his life.

Excellence in Mother-Baby Care

T

iffany and Aaron of Germantown were just 20 weeks into their pregnancy when they learned that one of their unborn twins had only a small chance of survival. Their doctor connected them with Jim Rost, M.D., medical director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, to learn about the care their babies would receive when they arrived.

“Dr. Rost was unbelievably warm and inviting to us and helped us feel at ease,” says Tiffany.

On August 22, 2012, at just 27 weeks, physicians performed an emergency cesarean section and the twins were placed in the NICU. Alexis weighed just 1 lb. 6 oz. and her brother, Dylan, weighed 2 lbs. 8 oz. Dylan required only minimal respiratory support whereas Alexis was placed on a breathing machine called a ventilator.

Tiffany visited her babies up to 12 hours a day in the NICU. Dylan went home after 51 days, but Alexis stayed for more than 120 days. On December 23, 2012, Alexis finally joined her brother at home. With both children home and gaining weight, Tiffany is thankful for the Shady Grove Adventist Hospital NICU team.

“Not only was it convenient for us but we were very fortunate to have a facility that could handle a baby as small and as sick as our daughter and to have as positive of an outcome,” she says.

Shady Grove Adventist Hospital’s expert mother-baby care has earned the International Board of Lactation Consultants Care Award and recognition as a gold-level Breastfeeding-Friendly Workplace from the Maryland Breastfeeding Coalition.

New parents, Aaron and Tiffany, are thankful for the excellent care provided by staff at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital’s Level IIIb Neonatal Intensive Care Unit when twins, Dylan and Alexis were born at 27 weeks.

Excellence in Behavioral Health Services

F

ive-year-old Jack is a bright, artistic child and very engaging with adults. He also struggles with anxiety that at times is overwhelming, especially in social environments with his peers.

These difficulties led his mother, Jennifer, to the Therapeutic Nursery Program TNP at the Reginald S. Lourie Center for Infants and Young Children. The TNP is a family-centered intervention program that

works collaboratively with parents to encourage and support their child’s positive emotional growth in the classroom and at home.

“Since enrolling in the Therapeutic Nursery Program, Jack’s progress at home and in the classroom has been remarkable,” says Jack’s mother, Jennifer.

The goals of the TNP are to help young children overcome social and emotional delays by building positive relationships with adults and peers and helping children express their feelings in safe ways.

With this foundation, children can be successful in school throughout their life “Jack is learning how to communicate with his family and his peers in way that helps him build confidence, feel secure and establish trust, Jennifer says. We are just delighted to see our little boy growing, learning and happy.”

Adventist Behavioral Health is a comprehensive behavioral health provider with locations in Dorchester and Montgomery counties, including Washington Adventist Hospital’s Behavioral Health Unit and the Reginald S. Lourie Center for Infants and Young Children.

The organization offers a broad range of behavioral health programs and services for young children, adolescents, adults and senior citizens including therapeutic nursery programs, acute inpatient care, outpatient/ dual diagnosis chemical dependency programs, residential treatment, special education and community-based residential services.

Excellence in Rehabilitation Services

T

om, Bethesda resident and father of 12, came to Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital of Maryland for inpatient therapy in October. He had fallen from a tree while cutting branches during work, suffering a traumatic spinal cord injury.

Following inpatient therapy, Tom underwent two years of outpatient physical and occupational therapy at Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital.

“They asked me the first day of therapy what my expectations were and I didn’t have any,” Tom remembers. “ [My therapist] asked me, ‘Do you think you can walk?‘ and I just didn’t have a clue. I said, ‘I don’t think so.’ But I was walking that first day.”

As he regained strength and returned home, Tom was determined to reach a goal he had prior to his injury—racing in the Marine Corps Marathon. One of his therapists at Adventist Rehab petitioned to get him his own bike, a “hand cycle,” by writing a letter on his behalf for a $3,000 grant through the Challenged Athletes Foundation.

When his hand cycle arrived, Tom resumed training for the Marine Corps Marathon, which he completed on October 30, 2011. He has since completed the American Odyssey Relay, a 200-mile race from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, to Washington, D.C., as well as the 2012 Marine Corps Marathon.

Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital of Maryland opened its Neuro Rehabilitation and Balance Center in September, offering innovative inpatient and outpatient care for individuals experiencing problems as a result of stroke, brain injury or a neurological condition.

Tom’s expert therapy and care team helped him reach his goals. He has been able to continue his family business and still visits Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital to speak with current patients about his experience.

Excellence in Home Care Services

W

ith some encouragement, a healing environment and a compassionate caregiver, Robert, of Silver Spring was able to regain his independence just two weeks after bilateral knee replacement surgery.

“Before therapy, it was painful to stand on hard surfaces,” Robert says. “It made normal activities like grocery shopping very difficult.”

After an initial in-home assessment, Jill Harper, physical therapist at Adventist Home Care Services, worked closely with Robert’s physician and family members to develop a personalized medical plan of care directly tailored to his condition and needs.

She explained that she approached caring for Robert as she would her own parents.

Choosing to recover in the comfort of his own home in June 2012, Robert was referred to Adventist Home Care Services, which provides a full range of home health care services across the Maryland-D.C. region, ranging from assistance with personal care to skilled help from a nurse or a therapist.

Adventist Home Health, part of Adventist Home Care Services, was named as a national top-performing home health agency for the third year, ranking in the top 500 of the 2012 HomeCare Elite. Adventist Home Health serves Montgomery, Prince George’s, Charles, Calvert, St. Mary’s, Howard and Anne Arundel counties.

The procedure replaces both knees simultaneously, making rehabilitation a critical and often challenging stage of recovery.

“Jill pushed me, yet always took my feelings into consideration. She gave me the confidence to believe I could make it on my own,” Robert says.

Today, Robert is back at work as a plumber and is able to enjoy his hobby of gardening without pain and discomfort.

Excellence at Hackettstown Regional Medical Center

W

hen Clinton, an elderly, terminally ill patient in the intensive care unit/coronary care unit (ICU/CCU) at Hackettstown Regional Medical Center, became comatose, his family knew that the time had come to let their loved one pass gently from this life. At the same time, Dorothy, Clinton’s wife of many years, was also a patient in the hospital’s progressive care unit (PCU). Dorothy was in the end stages of her life, too, but she wanted and needed to be with Clinton during his final hours.

Debbie Kowolsky, an ICU/CCU nurse, brainstormed with her co-workers and within a very short time, Clinton and Dorothy were both moved to a quiet room on the hospital’s third floor. Their hospital beds were carefully wheeled together and placed close enough for Dorothy to reach out and hold Clinton’s hand.

“The entire staff of PCU and ICU/CCU went above and beyond to accommodate our unique circumstances and provided such kindness to my family,” says Sharon, Clinton and Dorothy’s daughter.

“Debbie’s suggestion to move my parents into the same room … so that they could be together was beautiful and forever touched my heart.”

Surrounded by family, and with his hand cradled in Dorothy’s, Clinton quietly passed away—peacefully, just as his family had wished. Nine hours later, Dorothy also passed and entered into eternal rest with her beloved Clinton.

In a continual effort to enhance patient care, Hackettstown Regional Medical Center recently established Medical Center Partners in Primary Care, and Medical Center Partners in OB/GYN, two hospital-employed physician practices located adjacent to the hospital. These offices will grow and expand to include various specialties and services for the health of our community.

The compassion of Debbie Kowolsky, an ICU/CCU nurse, and her co-workers, brought an elderly couple together for the very last time under very special circumstances at Hackettstown Regional Medical Center.

Partnering With Our Physicians

M

ore than 2,000 physicians in our community are affiliated with Adventist HealthCare as part of our continuum of care for the communities we serve. Of that number, hundreds of primary care physicians and specialists have also chosen to partner with us through Adventist Medical Group and our ACES (Ambulatory Care Electronic Health Records Support) Program.

A recently announced partnership between ACES and the Primary Care Coalition will now electronically connect more than 200 health-care providers through a Health Information Exchange (HIE) to further strengthen the health safety-net for the 120,000 low-income, uninsured residents

in Montgomery County, Md. The Adventist HealthCare HIE will expand the number of community physicians connected through ACES, ensuring that providers have the right information at the right time for the right patient to receive the right care.

Adventist Medical Group The Adventist Medical Group Christopher Magee, M.D., network of local primary orthopedic surgeon, offers care physicians, surgeons high-quality orthopedic care and specialists serves our to the Washington Adventist communities in Montgomery, Hospital community, further Prince George’s and Frederick expanding Adventist Medical counties in Maryland. The Group specialties for the network is a collaboration with health of our community. the George Washington Medical Faculty Associates (MFA), the largest multi-specialty physician practice in the Washington, D.C. area.

Adventist HealthCare ACES Program Adventist HealthCare’s ACES Program provides expertise and guidance to accelerate the rollout and adoption of electronic health records to our outpatient physicians. ACES allows physician practices to remain independently operated, while providing the benefits of an integrated delivery network.

Adventist HealthCare Center on Health Disparities

I

n its 2012 Health Equity Progress Report, “Partnering Toward a Healthier Future,” the Adventist HealthCare Center on Health Disparities took the monumental step of becoming the first health system in Maryland—and just one of a handful in the nation—to publish a report detailing quality indicators and process measures stratified by race and ethnicity in a population of patients.

The groundbreaking report was presented to more than 200 business and health leaders in October 2012 at the Center’s sixth annual conference, “Starting at the Top: Achieving Health Equity Through Executive Leadership.” Maryland Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown, Co-chair of the Maryland Health Quality and Cost Council. Lt. Gov. Brown delivered the opening remarks for the event and was also the recipient of the Center’s annual Blue Ribbon Award for his work to reduce health disparities.

communities we serve, and especially on groups that are the most vulnerable. Our population health efforts include mothers and babies, seniors, and prevention and treatment of cancer, heart disease, stroke, obesity and influenza.

More than 200 community members are part of Adventist HealthCare’s weekly Walking Club program at Westfield Montgomery Mall, where Adventist HealthCare and the American Heart Association hosted a National Walking Day event on April 4, 2012, with Ginny Prunty, center, Manager, Community and Business Development for Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital of Maryland.
