Together in Service
Here at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, we have always appreciated the importance of collaboration and finding ways to foster and encourage teamwork. Each and every initiative in our quest to provide the best care to our community requires a coming together of physicians, caregivers, and administrators — all of whom are devoted to our mission of service. In June of 2012, we broke ground on the new Shady Grove Adventist Aquilino Cancer Center, a state-of-the-art facility, which will bring together specialists and caregivers in a centralized location to provide the best in cancer care right here in our community. The proximity of surgeons, radiologists, dietitians, nurse navigators, social workers and others will allow for an easier and more efficient exchange of information, which will in turn lead to better delivery of care for our patients. Just as we have done before with the Expansion Campaign for the new Tower, the Healing Garden and the new Cardiac, Vascular and Interventional Radiology Suite, the Aquilino Cancer Center is coming to fruition after many years of planning and support from our community. As a friend of Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, you are an integral part of our team and a vital link in a chain that has grown longer and stronger over the years as we have made more advancements and programs available in our commitment to bring exceptional, compassionate care to those we serve. For the special place you hold on our team — thank you. Through your support of all we do, you’ve tilled the soil with us, making so much important progress possible for the health and wellbeing of our community.

Together in Purpose
Vince Lombardi once said, “Success demands singleness of purpose.” Arguably one of the most successful coaches in the history of football, his ability to motivate and inspire his players is legendary. He taught them about the importance of focus, determination and — most importantly — passion for the job at hand. At Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, we understand the importance of perseverance. Our purpose — our mission — is at the heart of everything we do. And every corner of the hospital, from the Healing Garden to the Emergency Department to every unit of every floor, each place and each person contributes in a unique way to that unified purpose. We are very excited about building another place with purpose — the new Shady Grove Adventist Aquilino Cancer Center. As part of our mission of serving our community through physical, mental and spiritual healing, the Center will focus on providing the best care for cancer patients and delivering that care in a way that makes the ordeal more manageable for patients and their families. The leading-edge treatments offered at the Center will assist those who are battling cancer. And with services that also include supportive care, such as nutrition counseling, nurse navigation, social work, support groups, fitness classes and more, the Aquilino Cancer Center will be a unique place for healing.
We acknowledge that in our quest for purpose, there is a special place that you, our partners from every corner of our community, hold. Without your support, the many initiatives, programs and services we offer simply would not exist. For maintaining your place beside us over the years, we are eternally grateful.

The Power of Teamwork Throughout our community, we see examples of teams working together toward common goals. Team environments foster unity, provide an outlet for members to learn from each other and offer synergistic combinations of ideas and abilities that may lead to new approaches and discoveries.
Throughout this report, you will find examples of how we join together to care for our patients, tackle complex medical challenges, and work to ensure the latest in advancements and treatments are available to those who expect and deserve the highest level of care from their community hospital. In all of this, we acknowledge that our team would not be complete without you. Our loyal supporters and partners stand with us, shoulder to shoulder, in all our efforts.
We celebrate and share every achievement, every milestone, with you.

A Team Makes a Difference The first symptom she experienced was a loss of energy. Before long, she began feeling a shortness of breath. “I was close to passing out,” Elizabeth Schwaab recalled. She knew something was terribly wrong. Elizabeth had two large blood clots in her lungs, which were affecting her heart’s ability to pump blood, and her ability to breathe. This situation, called a pulmonary embolism, is very serious, and often fatal if not caught and treated very quickly. Elizabeth was rushed to Shady Grove Adventist Hospital where it was promptly determined that she would require a procedure called a pulmonary embolectomy, where a catheter is inserted through the heart and into the lungs to remove clots. Shady Grove is one of very few hospitals in the area where this procedure is performed. Several specialists and service lines were involved in her care, including physicians in the intensive care unit, the catheterization lab, and vascular specialists. “A tremendous coordination of effort is required in a case like this,” said Dr. Jeffrey Wang, the vascular surgeon who performed the procedure on Elizabeth. Shady Grove Adventist Hospital is recognized for its commitment to high level patient care and quality testing for the diagnosis of vascular disease, providing comprehensive diagnostic, interventional, and surgical vascular services. The vascular services team works closely with internists, radiologists, general surgeons, plastic surgeons, podiatrists, cardiologists, pulmonary doctors and others to diagnose and treat a variety of cases. Elizabeth credits her full recovery to a dedicated team, which included Dr. Wang and internist Dr. Brian Carpenter, among others, who worked seamlessly together to save her life.

At the Heart of a Cardiac Team Just 41 years old, Parag Parikh was young and healthy, or so he thought. But on a recent afternoon, when he began experiencing tingling in his shoulder, discomfort and a racing feeling in his chest, he thought he should call 9-1-1, just to be safe.
Within minutes of their arrival, the paramedic team performed an electrocardiogram (EKG) and sent the results directly to Shady Grove Adventist Hospital via LifeNet. This communications system enables ambulances in Montgomery County to transmit critical information to Shady Grove Adventist Hospital while patients are en route, allowing for the appropriate care to be ready as soon as the patient arrives. Immediately upon his arrival at Shady Grove, Parag was rushed to the catheterization lab, where interventional cardiologist Dr. Michael Castine performed an emergency percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), or angioplasty, to relieve a blockage in one of Parag’s arteries. After his surgery, a program of rehabilitation and exercise was prescribed for Parag. “There is a multidisciplinary team dedicated to rehabilitating patients after a cardiac event,” according to Dennis Friedman, M.D., medical director of cardiac and vascular services and cardiac rehabilitation at Shady Grove. Specialists, including cardiologists, nurses, physiologists, dietitians and certified diabetes educators, work together as a team and directly with patients to improve their quality of life and prevent the progression of heart disease. For Parag, the entire experience was a wake-up call to improve his health. He describes his newfound focus on a heart-healthy lifestyle as “helping me regain my confidence, physically and emotionally.”

A Family Gives Back Several years ago, Michael Aquilino learned something very important about the value of time. His wife, Tammie, was diagnosed with cancer. For two and a half years, as she bravely battled the disease, time was a precious commodity.
The demands of caring for his wife and their three young children, traveling to many doctor’s appointments while maintaining his career were taxing. After Tammie passed away, Michael decided more could be done to help families such as his, battling cancer in our community. His generous donation has helped the Shady Grove Adventist Aquilino Cancer Center become a reality. Michael believed our community deserved a state-of-the-art cancer center, where the best of care would be available, a place where services patients would benefit from would be available under one roof, eliminating the need to travel near and far for appointments. The Aquilino Cancer Center offers an array of services that help patients in their physical, emotional and spiritual fight, while taking into consideration the importance of preserving the family unit. When the Aquilino Cancer Center opens its doors in the summer of 2013, it will house advanced technology and leading-edge equipment to help patients fight a variety of cancers. Patients and their families will have access — in one place — to expert medical care as well as essential support services. And the center will house multidisciplinary teams of cancer specialists who will work together every day on patient care plans. This past June, Michael and his family joined physicians and administrators from Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, friends of the hospital and members of the community at the official groundbreaking ceremony for the Aquilino Cancer Center.
“It brings closure to a very difficult time in my life, and it’s a dedication to my wife. And for me…I’m able to give something back to the community.” — Michael Aquilino The Aquilino Family

Aquilino Cancer Center Breaking Ground to Break Down Barriers to Care
This summer, Adventist HealthCare officials, members of the Shady Grove Adventist Hospital team, local elected officials and members of our community joined together in a special groundbreaking ceremony on the campus of Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, on the site that will become Montgomery County's first free-standing, comprehensive cancer center. The Shady Grove Adventist Aquilino Cancer Center, scheduled to open in the summer of 2013, will be a 50,000 square foot, three-story building and will offer state-of-the-art cancer care in one centralized location to patients in our community. The Center will house multidisciplinary teams of cancer specialists, including medical, surgical and radiation oncologists; oncology nurses; cancer care nurse navigators; oncology dietitians and social workers, who will all work together, side by side, and directly with patients. For the dedicated teams of caregivers, the Aquilino Cancer Center will create a place where they can more efficiently interact with their colleagues and work more proactively in their quest to better serve their patients. As part of the Shady Grove Life Sciences Center and the Great Seneca Science Corridor, physicians at the Aquilino Cancer Center will also be able to closely collaborate with local and national research organizations, and offer patients opportunities to participate in clinical trials and research projects. Every patient who walks through the Center's doors will have access to all the important services they need — the very best of care — delivered in a way that will make the cancer experience more manageable for the patient and the patient's family. “For the patient, our plan is to create a Center where they can walk in and have all of the services they need that completely takes care of them as they're fighting cancer,” said Jane Peck, the Executive Director of Cancer Care Services for Adventist HealthCare. “Not just their doctor's appointments and the clinical side of things, but also the supportive care that a cancer patient needs, whether that be through psycho-social support, nutritional support, fitness, all of those elements that are so important to a person when they're battling the disease.” The cancer journey takes both a physical and an emotional toll on patients. From a patient's perspective, having all the services they need under one roof makes life easier during a time that is stressful and taxing. The Center's breadth of services will transform the way cancer patients cope with and fight their disease.

Looking Back
The Aquilino Cancer Center is the latest in a series of advancements planned by Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, as part of our mission to ensure that our friends and neighbors in our community have the best of care available right here where they need it most.
Before we look ahead to other current and future advancements, we wanted to share some of the important progress made in 2011 in programs and services at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. These initiatives are already making significant differences for our patients and their families and would not be possible without the generous support of our friends and partners in care. Additionally, we received several designations and awards throughout 2011; these achievements demonstrate our dedication to delivering the finest care possible to our community. 14
Cancer Care In 2011, the new Shady Grove Adventist Radiation Oncology Center opened in Germantown, Maryland. The center is the first facility in Germantown to offer radiation therapy. The center houses state-of-the-art radiation equipment using cone beam technology, one of the latest advances in cancer treatment. This important advancement is part of Shady Grove Adventist Hospital’s commitment to expand access to vital services to residents of upper Montgomery County. Also in 2011, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital's Life Beyond Cancer program experienced significant growth. Since its inception, the goal of the program has been to ensure that a comprehensive complement of cancer care services is made available to members of our community. Last year, the program moved to an expanded office space and is currently housing a nurse navigation team that helps guide patients through their cancer journey. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network recommends the use of navigators to ensure patients receive the best care possible and understand and have access to an array of services that may be helpful to them — in essence, developing a customized treatment plan
that is based on the individual needs of each patient. The navigation team at Shady Grove includes four nurse navigators, an oncology social worker and an oncology dietitian. The team focuses on treating the whole person through expanded access to clinical, physical, spiritual and financial resources.
The Linear Accelerator, part of the state-of-the-art technology at the new Shady Grove Adventist Radiation Oncology Center, ensures precise targeting of tumors, sparing normal tissue from being affected by radiation.

The newly expanded space is a unique setting that includes a patient/family conference room and resource library to support patient education and access to resources. Nutrition classes, support groups and complementary fitness activities have been made available to patients and their families throughout the course of the year. Additionally, a Healing Arts initiative was launched; studies have shown that exposure to the arts in health care helps to reduce stress and anxiety, decreases the need for pain medication, decreases blood pressure and reduces the duration of hospital stays. Currently, more than 1,000 newly diagnosed cancer patients (of the nearly 5,000 throughout Montgomery County) choose Shady Grove for their care and support programs each year. This number is expected to significantly increase with the opening of the Aquilino Cancer Center. Shady Grove Adventist Hospital's Cancer Program achieved accreditation with commendation by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons in 2011. It is among only
The daVinci SI Surgical System.
30 percent of U.S. hospitals to achieve this distinction, signifying the quality care provided to patients by Shady Grove Adventist Hospital’s cancer care program.
Surgical Services In the summer of 2011, surgeons at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital began performing the latest level of minimally invasive surgery using leading-edge robotic technology, the da Vinci SI Surgical System. The system works by extending the physician’s eyes and hands, essentially allowing the surgeon to control a “robot” to perform highly precise, intricate procedures. The system is used to treat a wide variety of conditions, including bladder cancer, colorectal cancer, gynecologic cancer, endometriosis, kidney cancer, kidney disorders, lung cancer, weight loss, prostate cancer, throat cancer, thyroid cancer, uterine fibroids and uterine prolapse. The enhanced precision offered by the da Vinci system spares surrounding nerves, which benefits patient recovery by expediting the healing process.

Cardiac and Vascular Care
16
In the spring of 2011, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital achieved an important designation — it was named as one of the few cardiac interventional centers in the state of Maryland. The Maryland Institute of Emergency Medical Services and Systems (MIEMSS) awards this designation after careful review of qualifications and requirements and a lengthy and rigorous application process. This is a very prestigious designation, as EMS in Maryland can only take patients who are suspected of suffering a heart attack to hospitals who hold this title. Also in 2011, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital received three recognitions for quality cardiac care. These included: 2011 ACTION Registry-GWTG Gold Performance Achievement Award from the American College of Cardiology Foundation and the American Heart Association; the Mission Lifeline Silver Performance Achievement Award from the American Heart Association; and the Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (pPCI) waiver extension from the Maryland Health Care Commission. The ACTION Registry-GWTG Gold Performance Achievement Award recognizes hospitals throughout the country for consistent, outstanding care to heart attack patients and is the highest level achievable for this honor. The Mission Lifeline Award recognizes Shady Grove for its commitment and success in improving the survival and care for patients experiencing the most serious type of heart attack — a STEMI (ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction).
The extension of Primary PCI Waiver recognizes Shady Grove’s sustained excellence in performance of the life-saving emergency procedure known as pPCI, more commonly known as angioplasty.
These recognitions of Shady Grove Adventist Hospital’s cardiac program are indicative of the dedication of the entire cardiac team at Shady Grove. Additionally, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital’s Vascular Laboratory achieved accreditations by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories (ICAVL) for its noninvasive vascular testing in the areas of carotid ultrasound and venous ultrasound. These accreditations, considered the industry “gold standard,” recognize Shady Grove’s delivery of quality care and testing to vascular patients. The Vascular Laboratory also achieved full re-accreditation from the American College of Radiology (ACR).
Neonatal Intensive Care Shady Grove Adventist Hospital was the only hospital in Maryland in 2011 to earn the Gold Medal award for quality care provided to critically ill newborns from the Maryland Patient Safety Center (MPSC) Neonatal Collaborative. Shady Grove’s neonatal team prides itself on instituting proactive protocols to advance the delivery of care to the community’s youngest and most vulnerable patients.

Mother-Baby Care Shady Grove Adventist Hospital became the first hospital in Maryland in 2011 to receive the International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) Care Award. The international award recognizes the exceptional, comprehensive education and support the hospital’s clinical team provides to breastfeeding families. All lactation consultants in Shady Grove Adventist’s mother/baby unit are IBCLC nurses who specialize in clinical management of breastfeeding. The IBCLC credential is the only one globally-accepted for professional lactation services and requires a rigorous recertification process every five years.
EMR Technology Always with a goal of more efficient care, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital and the entire Adventist HealthCare system instituted electronic medical records (EMR) technology in 2011, moving to an EMR system for all patients. Transition to the state-of-the-art clinical system involved years of planning and training. The system makes it easier for physicans and patients to keep track of their medical history and also helps physicians share helpful information with patients about their condition more easily and quickly.
EMR allows “anytime access” to physicians, so they may be able to consult critical patient records wherever they are, whenever they may need the information. Ultimately, this important advancement ensures that medical offices operate more efficiently, and enhances the quality of patient care. The move to the new EMR system is part of a commitment to “Care Excellence” — which includes plans to transform the standards of care delivery, enhance the patient experience, increase provider productivity and expand patient access to health information.
Diabetes Care In the United States, a total of 25.8 million children and adults — 8.3 percent of the total population — have diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association. Shady Grove Adventist Hospital has made it a priority to address this ever-growing health epidemic. In 2011, we continued to step up efforts to offer a comprehensive program of outpatient diabetes education classes. Accredited by the American Association of Diabetes Educators, this program is designed to help those living with diabetes to better manage this life-long disease. Classes are taught by registered nurses and a registered dietitian, all of whom are Certified Diabetes Educators.

Cancer Care
Cardiac, Vascular and Interventional Radiology
Cancer care is of enormous importance to our community and is a major focus for Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, both today and into the future. We are working hard to integrate, coordinate and offer a comprehensive approach in the fight against cancer. The Aquilino Cancer Center will house the most advanced technologies for diagnosing and treating cancer, as well as critical services that help patients and families cope with a diagnosis of cancer. These support services will include: Cancer Care Navigation services, support groups, palliative care services, complementary health treatments, nutritional counseling and cooking classes, massage therapy and meditation, yoga classes and fitness activities, an education library, and pastoral care services. Our destination Cancer Center will focus on individual, coordinated, personalized care and a unique environmental experience for healing.

broader spectrum of diagnoses, including pulmonary and vascular conditions, diabetes and obesity. In the months ahead, The Center for Fitness and Health will continue to add classes and equipment to continue to meet the growing need for cardiac-focused healthcare programs in our community. An innovative new tool is beginning to ensure radiation safety for physicians and surgeons in Shady Grove Adventist Hospital's Cardiac, Vascular and Interventional Radiology (CVIR) Suite. The Zero Gravity Radiation Protection System is essentially a lead shield that is suspended from the ceiling and attaches to a physician with a special magnetized vest, affording protection and allowing the physician to move more freely during procedures requiring radiographic imaging. The new system will make a big difference in ongoing efforts to protect staff from radiation exposure.

Evergreen Lounge The Evergreen Lounge at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital has been an important place of comfort and respite for families of patients in Pediatrics, the Intensive Care Unit, the Critical Care Unit and Cardiac, Vascular and Interventional Radiology. Called a “safe haven for patient families during emotionally stressful times, the Lounge has been in need of renovation for many years. Plans are underway to complete the renovation, which began in the summer of 2011; these plans include completion of a new nourishment area, two private family consult rooms, fully renovated restrooms, new furniture, more natural lighting and two sleeper sofas for overnight guests. The renovation and rebirth of the Evergreen Lounge is of great importance to our community, because of the many families served by this core area of the hospital.

Fundraising Milestones The purpose of the Shady Grove Adventist Hospital Foundation is to encourage the community to support the many services and programs necessary for the hospital to meet the healthcare needs of our community. From the very smallest to the largest, every single gift means the best of care is accessible and available to our families, our friends and our neighbors. Every dollar donated to the Foundation goes directly to the improvement of care.
The programs and services you have read about in this report have made and are continuing to make life-changing differences for our patients. In 2011, the Shady Grove Adventist Hospital Foundation transferred more than $1 million to the hospital and raised more than $2.3 million in new gifts and pledges. The 26th Annual Shady Grove Adventist Hospital Golf Classic netted $300,000 to benefit Cancer Care Services at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. The annual employee C.A.R.E. (Caring, Acting, Responding Employees) Campaign once again exceeded expectations, raising more than $120,000 for the expansion of Cancer Care Services at Shady Grove, including the Life Beyond Cancer program and the Aquilino Cancer Center. Additionally, Adventist Healthcare donated more than $27 million in charity care directly to our community in the form of Medicaid assessments, financial contributions, and community health services.

Charitable Gift Annuity In giving, you will be receiving, for life! This is an opportunity to make a charitable gift to support Shady Grove Adventist Hospital and receive fixed annual payments for life. The payment amount is based on the age(s) of the payment recipient(s). The older the recipient(s), the larger the payments.
