Adventureland 2.0 O

ur re-designed site and unique programming require a re-designed website. In the very near future you will see a website that is cleaner, sleeker, and more user-friendly. It will have sections about the different camp and picnic options available and sections to help parents and children learn about Adventureland. The website will also have links to register on-line and order lunch, and of course PLENTY of pictures of all the AWESOME and fun things we do at camp each day. We also want to hear from you! What would you like to see on our new website? Post your ideas on our facebook page and help us make the best website possible!! http://www.facebook.com/adventureland.daycamp

ADVENTURELA Find Your True North at BASE CAMP!

W

hat is Base Camp?

We have re-named our regular classic camp program Base Camp to align with our Find Your True North curriculum and motto: In mountaineering, the Base Camp

is the safe and secure location that mountaineers set out from to explore the exciting world around them. Doesn’t that sound just like what we do at Adventureland? Our campers set out from the Lakeside Pavilion each day to test their limits, learn new things, and work together. So what better name than Base Camp could we give our camp program? In addition, this helps us differentiate the Base Camp from our new weeklong themebased kids-on-our-campus Annex Camps (read more about the Annex on page 6).

Base Camp will incorporate all the sports and activities we have always offered at Adventureland, but integrates them in a new streamlined way. Instead of campers going to Art, Nature, Outdoor Living, etc. those activities will come to them, and be infused throughout our campus all day! We are also expanding our Adventure Days to two days a week to give campers more club choices. We are really excited about this new way of providing unique and engaging experiences for your children, and we think you will be excited too! There are also unique special events planned, but we’re keeping them a secret for now so you’ll just have to stay tuned for things to come…

All Traditional activities like swimming, crafts, boating, fishing, & ga-ga will be a daily part of Base Camp. Plus what makes Adventureland even more exciting is our additional *S.T.E.M. - based Outdoor Adventure programming, aptly named Find Your True North, which includes Outdoor Survival, Nature, Geo-caching, Building Projects, Mapmaking,, Archery, Ropes & Ziplines, Creek Studies, Teambuilding and so much more at Base Camp!

*S.T.E.M. = Science, Technology, Engineering & Math

Mark your Calenders: Our 2013 Summer Schedule* Base Camp runs for eight weeeks beginning June 24th through Aug. 16th Mini Camps are scheduled for one week prior to Base Camp (June 17th - 21st)

and 2 one-week sessions after Base Camp ends (Aug. 19th - 23rd & Aug. 26th - 30th)

* Dates subject to change if school calender is extended (ie snow days)

AND DAY CAMP Camp Online Registration FAQs O

ur on-line registration is now fully up and running! Thanks to all the families who have already registered and given valuable feedback on how to make this process run smoothly. Below are frequently asked questions (and answers) that may help if you haven’t already registered for camp.

Can I register for camp and mail a check? No. You have to pay in full online for whatever number of days of camp you decide to buy per order. Forms of payment are Visa, Master Card, Discover, Amex and E-check.

Can I register for camp even though I don’t know the exact dates my child will be attending? Yes. Register for the number of days you want to attend and when you know the exact schedule get in touch with Lisa at adaycamp@aol.com and she will change your schedule calender internally.

What should I do if the calculated registration price in my online shopping cart is incorrect? Go back to the Days portion of the online registration and only choose 1 day of camp. Then get in touch with Lisa at adaycamp@aol.com. By doing this you will at least be in the system and not have to redo all of your information when you go back in. When getting in touch with Lisa make sure you have the exact number of days you want to purchase and what weeks your child/children will be coming.

Can I register for camp and be billed later?

No. You have to pay in full for whatever days of camp you want to register for.

Register and make payments from the privacy of your own home at any time, day or night, on our website.

We simply need 24 hours notice for registration additions or changes during camp: www. adventurelanddaycamp.com. As always, address any registration questions to Lisa D. at adaycamp@aol.com

Give the Gift of Camp P

arents who signed up early for camp got a special holiday surprise in their mailbox from Adventureland’s Art Department. They received handmade Golden Tickets to give their children to represent the gift of camp! Why not hand YOUR child a golden ticket and let them know that they will be attending Adventureland this summer! Think how gratified you will feel seeing your children excitedly opening their Golden Ticket envelopes !! After you sign up for camp you can simply contact Sue DeVicaris and she will create a Golden Ticket and send it right out, so you can give the gift of camp too! ADVENTURELA Jack’s Happy “Great Escape” Birthday Party In late autumn, our very own Jack Wineburg celebrated his 8th birthday Adventureland-style with an awesome “Great Escape” party at Adventureland Day Camp! The theme was designed by our very own counselors, and Jack’s parents, John & Casia Wineburg. It was beautiful weather and great fun was had by all!

Parties at ADC Parties at Adventureland Rock!

Adventureland’s site is available for parties, reunions, or picnic rentals throughout the summer and fall. Our fundraising division All In Productions is also available to help with fundraising events. Contact us for information on any of these options. Please write Lisa at adaycamp@aol.com to RSVP.

nnex Camps Are Here!

Annex Camps are weeklong workshops that complement our BASE CAMP program. We designed them for older (aged 10 -15) campers who want in-depth lessons in a favorite skill. For 2013 we are offering 4 popular BASE CAMP activities as Annex Camps.

For one full week Annex Kids will attend their Annex “class” for 1/2 the day, rejoin Base Camp for Free Swim, Lunch and other BASE CAMP fun. Annex Camp price is $325.00 a week. Schedule will be finalized March 1st so stay tuned for upcoming announcements at facebook.com/adventureland.daycamp

2013 Annex Camps:

Edible Art (2 classes to choose from)– We will create a variety of edible creations to eat, take home, or

share! Session I emphasizes hands-on baking and decorating scrumptious items from scratch. Session II transforms store bought items into edible masterpieces as well as party decor. Not food allergy safe.

Archery – Want to be like Katniss Everdeen or Robin Hood? Then sign up for Archery Annex Camp!

In this exciting course we will learn proper techniques for archery safety, firing various types of bows, making our own primitive bows, creating our own targets and playing different archery-based games.

Geocaching – If you’ve attended Adventureland you’ve experienced the high tech treasure hunting

activity called “Geocaching”. In Geocaching Camp we will learn to use compasses and GPS devices to search on-site for hard to find microcaches and solve multicache puzzles. We’ll make our own geocache course at ADC and create take-home caches to hide off-site for other International Geocachers to find!

Fishing – Annex fishermen will spend most of their time around Adventureland’s amazing private lake studying, mapping and, of course, fishing. We will learn how to make and use various lures, baits, and hooks. Try casting rods, use primitive fishing methods and learn to spot prime fishing locations. We will learn fishing safety, identify fish, turtles and other aquatic animals, with fishy crafts too! 4 page 6

AND DAY CAMP S.T.E.M. + ART = S.T.E.A.M.

T

here is a movement sweeping schools across the nation called STEM, which stands for the integration of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. This is an approach we have been using for quite some time at Adventureland (eg Fishing Frenzy, Mosaic Mural, etc)

But what about ART? How does art fit in? Well, experts are now asserting that Art and Design increase innovations grounded in STEM subjects. And we couldn’t agree more! In fact, Art Director Sue DeVicaris has been studying how to integrate visual thinking and problem-solving into our camp programs and education in general. This past fall she studied graphic facilitiation with the famous Grove Consultants International of San Francisco, CA. This resulted in our plans to incorporate writable surfaces (chalkboards, whiteboards & large format paper) throughout our buildings and outdoor areas to encourage visual problem-solving and note-taking for both staff and kids. Lunch Menus Are Here!

I

n case you didn’t hear, we have decided to use our friends at Village Catering www.villagecatering. com to handle our lunch program at Adventureland. They will provide a nice variety of healthy, fresh, and tasty lunch choices daily. Their online ordering allows parents to sit down with their children to choose their orders. There will be discounts available for weekly or monthly advance ordering. There is a separate cost for this service that is not part of the Base Camp tuition. But at $6.00 per meal it is convenient and a real bargain. You can, of course, also bring your own lunch or snacks at any time. Adventureland will still provide plenty of iced cold water, iced-tea and lemonade at lunch, and an afternoon snack each day.

We will host a complementary food tasting of all the lunch choices on SUNDAY May 5th at Adventureland’s Open House so you and your child can find out exactly what they would like to eat at camp.

Coming soon!

Our own private T-shirt shop online! This exciting development is courtesty of our favorite t-shirt printer C.J. from Innovative Workwear. www.innovativeworkwear.com
