EDITOR’S LETTER While New York and the east coast may be slowing rousing itself from the long winter; for me, spring can’t come soon enough. As February melts – literally and figuratively – into March, I can’t help but find myself daydreaming about warmer, longer days and the soon-to-be-had ability to trade nights spent in front of the fire for evenings spent under the stars. Given my penchant for summer, when Private Air was invited to spend the weekend in Vero Beach, I jumped at the opportunity to sate – at least temporarily - my spring fever at Windsor Florida. A beautifully sprawling, gracious community with deeply rooted southern charm; Windsor is also the home of the annual Windsor Charity Polo Cup, a brilliant star in Florida’s social calendar. Cochaired by Salvatore Ferragamo and the Honorable Hilary Weston, the event brought the sport’s most illustrious players together for an exciting day full of polo, fabulous food and notable wine to benefit the important, worthy work of the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson Research and the Alzheimer & Parkinson Association. For me, a weekend cheering on the players, admiring the ponies, supporting a great cause and doing it all under the warm, Florida sun was an ideal way to chase away winter’s chill – despite the “nor’easter” that heralded the start of March in New York! As we wait out the last of winter before being able to welcome those first, balmy spring days, I hope this issue of Private Air New York gives you a little summertime inspiration – it certainly did for me. Cheers!

FAREWELL
The Iconic G450 Gulfstream Retires By: Johnny Duncan
I
t seems many of the good things in life are replaced just when you’re beginning to enjoy them. Unfortunately, that is what is happening to the Gulfstream G450, the private aircraft preferred by many due to its impressive range of 4,350 nautical miles/8,056 kilometers at Mach 0.80. This aircraft also had some get up and go and could sprint 3,500 nm/6,482 km at Mach 0.85. William Shakespeare once said, Private Air New York | Spring 2018
“Fear no more the heat o’ the sun, nor the furious winter’s rages. Thou thy worldly task hast done, home art gone and taken thy wages.” Translation: it’s time for you to be put to pasture and let some other, stronger person, or aircraft, replace you. The G450 will be replaced with a more efficient and impressive G500. The G500 will fly 5,200 nm/9,630 km at Mach 0.85 and 4,400 nm/8,149 km 24
at Mach 0.90. Five G500 aircraft are undergoing flight testing, with type certification anticipated in early 2018. In a press release statement, Mark Burns, president, Gulfstream stated, “For the past 12 years, the G450 has been one of the best-selling business jets in the industry, beloved by pilots and passengers alike for its technological advances, smooth handling, impressive range and unsurpassed passenger comfort.” With over 360 aircraft in the G450 fleet, Gulfstream states that it will continue to provide industryleading product support and sustain engineering for its G450 customers. This is a case where out with the old and in with the new is a good thing. As Burn stated, “During its 30-year history, the GIV series transformed business aviation, and the G500 is already well on its way to doing the same, with the industry’s first active control sidesticks and the most integrated application of touch-screen controls in the flight deck.” www.privateairny.com

THE FUTURE OF AVIATION WITH AIRBUS’ CITYAIRBUS Visions of episodes of the Jetsons and 1960s comic books come to mind with the announcement that Airbus’ plans to put a self-flying “bus” in the air. By: Johnny Duncan
M
any technological advances often mimic fantasy, and this Airbus project is one of those advances. Its CityAirbus program successfully completed its “power on” of the “iron bird” ground test facility in Taufkirchen, Germany. In simple terms, the iron bird enables the verification of the electric propulsion system. The test was yet another step in the long pilot process before a prototype can take flight and this scientific dream finally comes to fruition. Testing, Testing This recent test means that the CityAirbus now can operate the propulsion system chain from flight controls to the dynamic loads of the propellers allowing the verification of all the critical components such as thermal dynamics, electric, mechanical systems. After the verification of the iron bird, the propulsion system will be embedded on the demonstrator by this summer. Recently, CityAirbus chief engineer, Marius Bebesel stated, “We now have a better understanding of the performance of CityAirbus’ innovative electric propulsion system, which we will continue to mature through rigorous testing while beginning the assembly of the full-scale CityAirbus flight demonstrator.” A collaboration between Airbus
www.privateairny.com
and Siemens is responsible for the test which reflects the CityAirbus architecture including motors, power electronics and distribution boxes developed and produced by Siemens, with an agreement between Airbus and Siemens on electric propulsion. Currently, the development of the CityAirbus demonstrator itself is on-going, and the first structural parts have already been produced and in the process of being assembled. These critical steps are paving for CityAirbus to take its first flight before the end of 2018. Flying Without a Pilot Developed by Airbus’ E-Aircraft Systems unit, the CityAirbus is a multi-passenger (currently designed for up to four passengers), selfpiloted battery-powered vertical take-off and landing vehicle designed for urban air mobility. The Airbus will cruise over frustrated commuters below at a speed of up to 75 mph 27
using a four-rotor design with eight motors powered by four batteries. Airbus believes that this form of transportation is a much more affordable and environmentally friendly way to commute to and from work or shopping. Though there is competition from other electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) craft, (one in Dubai and Passenger Drone), Airbus hopes to begin passenger service in cities by 2023, after government certification and a new system of urban air traffic management is in place to streamline the flights. Clearing all of these barriers is the first step toward faster, cheaper, and cleaner travel. And for those fearing flying in an aircraft with no pilot, CityAirbus won’t be autonomous at first. Manually operated by certified pilots, travelers can get more comfortable with flying taxis before sending them in the selfflying buses. Private Air New York | Spring 2018

THE NEW BOND: CRYPTOCURRENCY FOR HIGH NET WORTH INVESTORS By: Johnny Duncan
M
ost high net worth investors are willing to take some calculated risks for investments that are considered off the mainstream. With a little research and advice from financial advisors, this class of investors isn’t afraid to pull the trigger and jump in with both feet. However, there is a fear, a sense of apprehension from investors when there is a suggestion of investing in Bitcoin or other cryptocurrency platforms. Some folks think of Bitcoin as digital gold in that it is scarce and universally accepted as a store of value. Bitcoin has been all the rage as of late with a current value hovering around $10,000 per. But Bitcoin is not the only game in town. Now there is BOND, a new cryptocurrency platform designed to introduce high net worth investors to digital currencies safely. What Is It? According to the online dicitionary.com, cryptocurrency is a digital currency in which encryption techniques are used to regulate the generation of units of
www.privateairny.com
29
currency and verify the transfer of funds, operating independently of a central bank. So basically, cryptocurrency, like Bitcoin, a currency created in 2009 by someone using the alias Satoshi Nakamoto, is used to make transactions with no banks involved. This cryptocurrency can be used to buy furniture, book hotels, pay for airline tickets and more. The most popular use today is for making money by trading a form of cryptocurrency like Bitcoin. High net worth individuals (HNWI) that invest in traditional investments like stocks can do the same with a new platform, BOND, that enables investors (those with an income of at least $200,000), to buy shares in real estate and property assets. “BOND is a 100% assetbacked digital currency, or cryptocurrency, that is specifically designed for HNWIs and institutional investors,” says BOND Founder, Robert Edwards. “BOND affords investors the opportunity to purchase shares, known as ‘Bond Units,’ in an asset portfolio that contains a mixture of property bonds, real estate, and cryptocurrency assets.”
Private Air New York | Spring 2018
INVESTMENTS
With BOND, as the value of the underlying assets in this portfolio rise so too does the value of the Bond Units. The Bond Units can then be bought, sold, and exchanged on Bitshares, a digital stock exchange, (think digital FTSE or Nasdaq), making them a cryptocurrency in their own right. “We’re not designed as a ‘get-rich-quick’ scheme – quite the opposite,” says Edwards. “We don’t promise the crazy rates of return that some cryptocurrencies do. Rather, we aim to benefit HNWIs by offering the opportunity to enter the cryptocurrency markets with transparency, reduced risk and longer-term stability (offering projected annual returns of 8%), in an otherwise chaotic cryptocurrency world.” Easy Entry for Investors It isn’t difficult for HNWIs to invest in the world of cryptocurrency. According to Edwards, Institutional investors and HNWIs by-and-large tend to be risk-averse; they seek stable, long-term returns over volatility and a risky quick buck. As such, they’ve understandably been put off by cryptocurrency’s volatility to date. The model of BOND is therefore designed to be very familiar to institutional investors (investing in shares in an asset portfolio) and to help bridge the gap between these two worlds. HNWIs can even buy Bond Units via conventional bank transfer. There’s no complicated, technical set-up required, and you don’t need any prior cryptocurrency experience.
Private Air New York | Spring 2018
According to Edwards, the folks at BOND do a lot of handholding to help investors feel more comfortable investing. “It’s what in the investment community is sometimes referred to as ‘the cuddle’ and its why we are offering a support network that goes hand-in-hand with our investment offering. Investors can discuss the purchase process with the Bond team over the phone and will be invited into our Telegram app group where they can raise any concerns and ask questions to the Bond team and follow investors.” BOND’s mission is to introduce the traditional concept of buying, selling, and trading shares within the cryptocurrency world. By offering a well-known investment model, they aim to make it easy for HNWI investors to take their first steps in cryptocurrency in a reassuring, transparent way. Currently, in the cryptocurrency market, there are very few products that offer the option to achieve this goal. Safety and Good Returns Within BOND are Bond Units that are 100% asset-backed, or rather they are secured against the value of the underlying asset portfolio. Also, all investors must be accredited (that means with an income of at least $200k for the past two years or value of at least $1 million). “All potential investors must identify themselves and pass KYC (know your customer) due diligence checks,” says Edwards. “We are only engaging with institutional
30
investors because we want to work with those who are familiar with equity investments and may want to enter the cryptocurrency markets for the first time.” “Finally, the asset portfolio from which Bond Units derive their value is diversely spread across property bonds, real estate, and cryptocurrencies, ensuring that investor risk is reduced, even in the instance of a dramatic cryptocurrency crash. The asset portfolio can also be adjusted based on market conditions. HNWIs should be careful of any cryptocurrency investment opportunity that claims to guarantee extraordinary returns overnight. If it sounds too good to be true, it almost certainly is.” Going forward, BOND is pressing the gas pedal making strides toward creating more convenience HNWIs. “We will shortly be launching a facility that enables investors to send funds from their bank account to an app-based platform, which can then directly convert those funds into cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin or Ethereum, at the touch of a button, usually instantly, in real time,” states Edwards. “From there, with either of those currencies, Bond Units can then very simply be purchased. This will eliminate much of the hassle, cost, and confusion typically experienced in converting fiat currencies (such as Pounds or Dollars) into cryptocurrency, and with military-grade security will also ensure investors’ peace of mind.”

BEST PRACTICES FOR INVESTORS TO USE IN VOLATILE MARKETS By: Johnny Duncan
P
rior to the results of the US presidential election, many considered the stock market to be volatile. Translation: no one had a clue of which way the market would turn regardless of who took office, even though the US enjoyed a seven-year bull market run up to that point. Unfortunately, this fear of volatility is real, causing some investors to resort to panic mode, switching investments and selling when they should be buying. This fear also affects investors who know deep down that markets are inherently cyclical, but who may also panic and sell when stocks begin to slide. But by implementing some basic best practices, investors may be able to lose less sleep and enjoy a rewarding experience across the full market cycle.

Accept Volatility Volatility is a fact of life in the stock market. If the thought of too much volatility is overwhelming, you simply have to take actions to reduce risk—and that is where the trouble usually begins. Investors may go to such extremes to avoid risk that they miss out on some golden opportunities. “Make sure you have real assets that produce real yield, not just financial assets,” says Yuen Yung, CEO of Casoro Capital, a private equity and single-family office focused on creating real estate partnership opportunities for high net worth individuals, family offices, and institutions. Learn to Manage Risk However, if an investor is determined to reduce the amount of risk to single-digit percentages, Yung suggests get out of the market and start over. “Take the chips off the table while it’s hot and use them to diversify into non-market correlated assets. A lot of people lost a great deal in 07 and 08 by leaving everything in a market that was clearly overheated. It’s important to take your gains off the table and move them to more recession resistant assets before it is too late.” Managing risk is the key to surviving any market, including volatile ones. “There are four ways to manage risk. The first is to focus on income,” says Scott Picken, CEO of Wealth Migrate, a global online investment platform offering investors direct access to commercial real estate investment opportunities in premier markets around the world. “Secondly you have to focus on the quality of the partner. Market cycles are a given and so it is all about the track record of the partners and how they have performed through the previous downturns.” “Thirdly you have to ensure you partners are aligned long term. Most brokers or financial planners sell you something and earn a commission. They are not aligned with your long-term return. Finally, my uncle taught me when I was a teenager that you must always work out the worst-case scenario and if you can manage that, then everything else is upside.” Diversify to Profit Investing money outside of the standard market avenues, such as in real estate of various kinds, is another way to generate a healthy, risk-tolerant portfolio. “Diversification, especially with an allocation to non-market correlated real assets with real yield in addition to the standard stock and bond diversification is one way to counter any financial storms,” states Yung. “Real estate is one form that continues to be a great place to diversify and not only get some real income but also long-term growth. The new tax laws add additional incentives for a vast subset of investors.”

WEALTH MANAGEMENT
5 REASONS YOU’LL NEVER NEED THE BEST ADVISERS IN THE WORLD (WELL, NOT ALL THE TIME) By: Steven Abernathy
Reason #1 – It’s not in the client’s best interest to pay for advisers 24/7.
Gaining an informational advantage is how wealth grows, right? True. There are top tier advisers paid to do high level analysis on a fulltime basis. Warren Buffett employs such a group. But not even multibillionaires are likely to require the time and expertise of ALL the experts they employ 40 hours every single week. The hedge to staying wealthy is have experts available—when you need them.

WEALTH MANAGEMENT
Reason #2 – The right expertise works smart not hard.
While Mr. Buffett (and others like him) may have an army of financial analysts modeling scenarios around the clock, it’s unlikely he requires a patent attorney, actuary, or estate planning attorney working 24/7— even at his level. Most affluent families aren’t billionaires and certainly do not require retainer agreements when a few hours of work are all that will be required. This is where having access to a multi-family office able to provide that access is an important asset. a worthy steward. Reason #3 – Professional investors don’t receive anything for recommending a provider. As banks and brokerage firms may look to upsell additional services to their high net worth clients, the wealth management team within a family office has a fiduciary responsibility to act in the best interests of clients and their heirs. Family offices are legally bound to fair and reasonable fees and practices both in investment management as well as across the board in tax, legal, and estate planning. What does that look like? FINRA’s Conflict of Interest Rule is outlined here: Minimum Criteria for a Best Interest Standard At a minimum, any best interest standard for intermediaries should meet the following criteria: The standard should require financial institutions and their advisers to: • act in their customers’ best interest;
• adopt procedures reasonably
www.privateairny.com
designed to detect potential conflicts;
• eliminate those conflicts of interest whenever possible;
• adopt written supervisory procedures reasonably designed to ensure that any remaining conflicts, such as differential compensation, do not encourage financial advisers to provide any service or recommend any product that is not in the customer’s best interest; obtain retail customer consent to any conflict of interest related to recommendations or services provided; and
• provide retail customers with disclosure in plain English concerning recommendations and services provided, the products offered and all related fees and expenses. Reason #4 – Intelligent investors work with their advisers on a game plan annually.
There are cyclical events (tax planning, business meetings, philanthropy) on the calendars of those who plan. They understand the consequences which befall those who lack a blue print for the year ahead. While meetings about estate planning goals or planned giving may not be dramatically different from year to year, they are reviewed with the necessary experts. (This could make a difference for business owners recent enforcements of the Department of Labor’s rules as well as changes to the tax code.) Reason #5 –Wealth is not infinite…even if you hold a lot of capital today.

multi-generational wealth planning does so with the next generation’s values, abilities, and goals in mind. However, without transparent communication between generations, your wealth is highly likely to go from “shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in three generations” no matter the amount of wealth acquired. Educational meetings are VITAL to the preservation of wealth. But educational values are learned when families walk their talk. Annual family meetings may be of great value, however, the key to wealth growth and preservation is in instilling great stewardship in the younger generation. The world’s most affluent families know that it’s a combination of education, vigilance, and working smart that grows wealth—not simply throwing money around for its own sake. UPDATING BENEFICIARIES WHEN LIFE CHANGES IS CRUCIAL Ensure fairness across generations by choosing right annuity or life insurance distribution method By: Ken Nuss

children contingent beneficiaries who’ll all share equally in the proceeds.
If you get divorced and remarry but fail to change your beneficiary from your ex-spouse to your current spouse, your ex will receive the proceeds. Besides divorce, other life changes such as marriage or death of a loved one are occasions to review beneficiaries.
What would happen if both your spouse and child C predecease you? In that case, unless you’ve set up your beneficiaries correctly, all the proceeds would go to your two surviving children. Child C’s two children would be disinherited.
Additionally, there may be new people in your life that you want to include—such as grandchildren. Maybe there’s a charitable organization that you wish to support.
That’s not what most people want.
Here’s where it gets complicated. Suppose child A has three children, child B has none and child C has two, for a total of five grandchildren.
Instead, you can specify that if one of your children is deceased that their share will go to his or her children. This is called a per stirpes distribution.
Before making any changes, it’s important to understand how primary and contingent beneficiaries work.
That means that each branch of the family will receive an equal share. If that’s what you want to do, you must request per stripes because equal distribution (per capita) is the default.
If you’re married, your spouse is normally your primary beneficiary and your child or children are contingent. The contingent beneficiaries will receive the proceeds on your death if your primary beneficiary dies before you do or at the same time as you do.
Per stirpes designations are available from most but not all insurance companies. Because annuities, life insurance policies and retirement plans list beneficiaries, they all bypass probate court. That means that your will won’t determine who gets the proceeds—which is why having the right beneficiaries is so crucial.
While you should notify the insurer about the death of a primary beneficiary, even if you don’t, the proceeds will automatically go to your contingent beneficiaries. Fairness across generations If you have a number of grandchildren, the issue becomes more complex.
Annuity expert Ken Nuss is the founder and CEO of AnnuityAdvantage, a leading online provider of fixed-rate, fixed-indexed and immediate-income annuities. He launched the AnnuityAdvantage website in 1999 to help people looking for their best options in principal-protected annuities. More information is available from the Medford, Oregon, based company at https://www.annuityadvantage.com.

SUVs are the fastest-growing segment of the car market, tripling in sales in a decade from 8 million units in 2006 to nearly 26.5 million units last year. LAMBORGHINI URUS SUPER SUV Just saying the name, Lamborghini, speaks luxury and quality. The latest to come from Sant’Agata Bolognese is the Lamborghini Urus SUV entering the luxury SUV field. The Urus is typical Lamborghini with its powerfully low hood rising to a dome that houses the V8 twin-turbo engine. The muscular rear of the vehicle exudes power, and as is also typical with a Lambo, this SUV keeps its traditional two-thirds body, one-third window ratio found in its super sports cars. The Urus comes with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo gasoline engine offering 650 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque with just a tap of the pedal. With this much power, this 2.2-ton SUV can jump from a stop position to 60 miles per hour in only 3.6 seconds, and boasts a top speed of 189 mph. This dream SUV also comes with a number of driving modes for all-terrain driving, including STRADA, TERRA (off-road) and NEVE (snow), SABBIA (sand), SPORT and CORSA. This SUV provides efficiency of 24.8 mpg due to the ability of the engine to deactivate four of its eight powerful cylinders, without hindering the drive. Also included in the Bentayga is the Stop-Start technology which can activate at near-to-stop speeds, contributing to the low CO2 emissions of 260 g/km. Bentley offers over 100 standard and unique paint options and, as with other high-end auto manufacturers, you can travel to Crewe, England with a chip off your library wall or your favorite colored Stuart Weitzman shoes to show them the color of the SUV you prefer and they will create it. he landmark creation of cognac from the Cellar Masters is contained in the rarest and only decanter of its kind in the world. Named Le Salmanazar, it is a decanter of approximately twelve times the standard size of a wine bottle. Many traditional wine bottle sizes are named for Biblical kings and historical figures, so it comes as no surprise that the marriage of Louis XIII cognac by legendary Rémy Martin, founded in 1724, and the decanter named for the king, is the creation of the famed house of Baccarat crystal. Inspired by a flask found on the battlefield of Jarnac, Baccarat successfully took on the feat of crystal-making on a scale to which only the great master can hope to achieve. “Innovation is written in the legacy Private Air New York | Spring 2018

A collector’s masterpiece, this exquisitely unique decanter stands as the ultimate symbol of LOUIS XIII’s history, tradition and passion for rare craftsmanship,” said Ludovic du Plessis, LOUIS XIII Global Executive Director. Recently, a Balthazar and Double Magnum were sold during live auctions in New York City and Hong Kong, with proceeds benefitting Elephant Family - a non-profit organization that aims to save Indian elephants from extinction through field projects, conservation efforts and habitat rehabilitation.
Developed to honour the 100th anniversary of “Parcelle des Femmes,” a revered plot located within the heart of the vineyards planted during World War I by a courageous group of women determined not to let the negative impact of the war compromise the success of future vintages, COS100 is a rare and exceptional wine derived from the one-hundred-yearold Merlot vines originally set by the “Parcelle des Femmes”. More than simply an exceptional wine, COS100 is a unique endeavour designed to pay homage to the historical significance of its terroir.
“The release of COS100 signifies the incredible journey that began with Louis Gaspard d’Estournel,” exclaimed Cos d’ Estournel owner Michel Reybier. “With COS100, I want to pay tribute to the terroir, and to acknowledge the women who, more than a hundred years ago, courageously worked in the vineyard to ensure the continuity of the estate. A symbol of transmission, COS100 is a unique wine nurtured over several generations, a powerful link between a glorious past and a promising future. It is with great pride that I reveal an exceptional wine, a testimony of our permanent quest for excellence that fosters the legend of Cos d’Estournel.”

FINDING THE BEAUTY … IN? Antique expert advises young collectors to consider art in a whole new way By: Tricia Drevets

o you associate antique collecting with people of your parents’ or grandparents’ generations? Benjamin Macklowe, president of New York City’s Macklowe Gallery, is asking you to rethink that image. He suggests that educating yourself about antiques and then choosing the objects you like can be both enriching and gratifying.

At a time when many young adults prefer to spend their money on experiences –such as world travel –rather than on objects such as furniture or home accessories, Macklowe suggests that “owning things can be a sign of happiness in your life…We can celebrate our lives by surrounding ourselves with things of beauty.” An expert on French Art Nouveau decorative arts,

specifically in Tiffany lamps and glassware, Macklowe encourages beginning collectors to seek out beautiful objects for their own homes. “It’s not about what it costs but what it means to you,” he says. He explains that purchasing antiques is recycling at its best, and that antiques can be surprisingly affordable. “If you are a little bit intrepid and do some

careful internet research,” he says, “you can furnish a 1,000-squarefoot apartment with antiques for less than (with items purchased from) Restoration Hardware.” As many Baby Boomers retire and downsize, they are selling their valuable antique collections, he explains. Because there is so much on the market right now, savvy young collectors have the opportunity to purchase items at low prices – often at or near what the pieces sold for 45 or more years ago. However, many beginning collectors do not know where to start. Macklowe strongly recommends a visit to an antique show as a first step. “Walk into a booth that has things you don’t like,” he says. “Ask the owner why

they are important… It will give you a different vocabulary. You may still not like them, but you will now know something new.” When you do find something you like, he continues, “Buy it. Take it home, and see how it exists with what you have. Live with it…If you don’t like it, you can always sell it.” Macklowe says this process of “understanding your taste” is an essential aspect of growing as a human being. “You need get up and set aside time to research and explore,” Macklowe says. “You have to be curious and sometimes put yourself in uncomfortable situations in order to grow.” As a personal example, the gallery owner shares how a series of

unexpected events led him to visit a French home filled with Art Nouveau décor. That experience gave him “incredible insight” into the post-Industrial Revolution art period he had studied for years. “I got to see how people really lived at the time when they first experienced leisure time,” he says. “The rooms were filled with masterpieces I would never have seen otherwise.” For Macklowe, buying an antique is a way of saying, “I want to commemorate, to celebrate this moment in my life.” “Beauty has utility in your life,” he says. “And it’s not just going to see it, but it’s touching it and experiencing it…It is buying it and seeing how to feels to have it around you.”

PORCELANOSA EXPANDS ITS NEW YORK CITY FLAGSHIP STORE By: Jessica Hall
T
hree years after the launch of its Fifth Avenue, New York City location store, Spanish interior design and ceramic specialist, Porcelanosa, recently announced that it has bought an adjacent building and is expanding. The company’s acquisition extends the business floor space to over 27,000 square feet including seven floors, a basement, and rooftop. Porcelanosa’s additional space provides the room needed to showcase the company’s vast product line and to provide for its increased business. The Porcelanosa Group is considered the premiere European manufacturer of ceramic and porcelain tile, natural stone, hardwood, mosaics, kitchen cabinets, vanities, bathtubs, faucets, shower systems, solid surfaces and more. The company has more than 400 showrooms worldwide that it operates itself or through other companies and distributors. This recent expansion is in addition to Porcelanosa’s 26 other showrooms and six distribution centers spanning more than five million square feet throughout the USA alone. Porcelanosa’s expansion is in response to the increased interests from New Yorkers that has required the Vilareal based Porcelanosa to expand to meet the demand. The same is true for many others in the ceramic business as demand continues to increase. In fact, according to a recent market research report by Transparency Market Research, the global ceramic tile market is projected to expand at a 9.8% compound annual growth rate from 2018 through 2024. In terms of value, the market is anticipated to increase from $76.81 billion level in 2015 to a possible $178.1 billion by 2024. Known for its exhibitions that offer various ways of combining high quality materials to create the most sophisticated and extraordinary kitchens and bathrooms, Porcelanosa’s Flagship Showroom is an essential resource for home owners, interior designers, architects, builders and developers. A MODERN RIFF ON ART DECO Interior Designer Lisa Melone Cloughen Reinvents the Ideal Pied-à-Terre in Manhattan By: Gina Samarotto
I
n commissioning Lisa Melone Cloughen of the design firm Melone Cloughen Interiors to create their dream pied-à-terre, in a landmark, pre-war Park Avenue building in the heart of Manhattan, the clients’ directives were straightforward. The clients’ requested a minimalist sense of glamour and sophistication set against a neutral color palette. And a less is more masterpiece is what Melone Cloughen Interiors elegantly delivered. “Given the clients’ preferences and sophistication, I wanted the space to have a grand feeling with more than a nod to the period of the building,” says the designer. “All of the millwork is new, but it does hark back to an earlier era. I would consider the interiors to be a modern riff on the glamour of Art Deco in New York.” www.privateairny.com

The library is painted and glazed with a subtle sheen finish that is enhanced with a layer of metallic tint. The Baker camelback sofa was reupholstered in silk/cotton velvet from Kravet. The swing-arm sconces are from Vaughan and iron and glass coffee table is from Lillian August. The Ebanista side chairs were a serendipitous find as they were the last 2 to be produced and they are upholstered in an Osborne and Little linen. Melone chose flat Roman shades in a tone that would blend well with the wall finish and not detract from the elegance and sophistication of the space. The shade fabric is a silk from Zimmer and Rohde.
While adverse to jarring or startling elements, the owners did want to incorporate some sparkle and gleam in their new space to set off the neutral color palette. To create that vision, semi-gloss and high gloss paint finishes were used. The designers also infused light with a significant number of ambient with warm lighting sources. When the homeowners first purchased this residence, the apartment was in poor condition. Much of the original charm was lost over the years, and repairs were necessary. As such, the plan for redesign didn’t simply see the clients’ aesthetic wishes to fruition; they were designed to help restore the charm of the era of the building itself. Elements in the home include cut slabs of lightly polished Afyon White Marble, all the better to create a particularly dramatic entrance. The homeowners’ art collection also plays an integral role. The myriad pieces include several paintings of the New York skyline, nothing if not entirely apropos for the home. Two large-scale pieces were placed on opposing living room walls along with a starburst mirror over the mantle. In the dining room, pieces that would benefit from the moody paint finishes were chosen – in this case, oil paintings that lend a sense of warmth and graciousness to the room. “I think luxury is about defining and creating a sense peace and beauty that resonates” explains the designer. “Given the frantic world we live in and the constant demands on senses, we all need to come home to an environment that harmonizes with our lifestyle and ultimately enhances us personally.” www.privateairny.com

SPRING AHEAD AND TURN BACK THE CLOCK ON YOUR APPEARANCE By: Daryn Mayer
A
s we spring forward to a new season, how do we turn back the clock on our appearance and reverse the signs of aging? The key to reversing the aging pro-cess can be found in advances in modern science and technology and include both products and non-surgical procedures. Each could precisely stimulate our body’s ability to regenerate and revitalize our appearance and wellbeing, in-side and out.

BEAUTY
Facing the Facts Our faces can truly express our feelings and our age. Wrinkles, fine lines, sag-ging skin, redness, and brown spots can make us look older than we feel. While there are many treatments available to correct and reverse the signs of facial aging, until now none of their benefits were available in a bottle. According to Dr. Vivian Bucay, dermatologist practicing in San Antonio, DefenAge® is an in-novative and proven skin care system that corrects up to sixteen visible signs of aging in just six weeks. Ini-tial results can be seen after only one week. Utilizing the power of peptides and its exclusive ingredient, Age – Re-pair Defensins®, DefenAge® massages the body’s own dormant master stem cells. These cells create new epidermis, which eventually becomes new skin. DefenAge brightens and improves skin imperfec-tions, smoothes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and balances texture. This approach is revolutionary and uti-lizes our natural mechanism. Unlike other skin care products that distribute ingredients through the barrier layers of skin, DefenAge® is formulated to bring its powerful agents through the hair follicles located on our entire body. This ensures the most efficient and effective means for the body to create beautiful new skin, which creates a smoother, firmer, and more youthful ap-pearance, inside and out. While Defen-Age® was originally developed to be used on the face, we have seen it do wonders to improve and firm the skin tone and texture on the neck, décolletage, and hands. DefenAge® is a break-through approach that addresses the signs of aging skin. I’m impressed with the improved appearance of the skin af-ter using DefenAge® on myself, my pa-tients, and on participants in a multi-center, double-blind, placebo-controlled study that we just completed.” drvivianbucay.com | defenage.com www.privateairny.com
Your Body Only Better As we age, especially when we get past thirty-five, it becomes more difficult to eliminate stubborn fat. You know, that belly pudge that won’t budge, those saddlebags you just can’t lose and that excess upper arm bulge that’s not arm candy. According to Dr. Michele Green, Manhattan-based cosmetic dermatologist, “saying goodbye to stubborn body fat can be easy with a 35-75-minute Coolsculpt-ing® procedure done in my office on the Upper East Side. CoolSculpting is a non-invasive procedure that utilizes a controlled cooling technology that is cleared by the FDA to eliminate fat cells. You can lose up to 25% of body fat and eliminate those stubborn bulges on your stomach, flanks, upper arms, thighs, and lower buttocks, all with no surgery or downtime. I have been using CoolSculpting on my patients for nearly ten years. It’s a safe and effective way to gently remove the soft fat that lies just below the skin without painful and intrusive surgery. Unlike other treat-ments that target fat, CoolSculpting takes the least amount of time and treatments to see the maximum results. After just one treatment, my patients notice their clothes fit loser, which makes them feel better. The results are proven and long-lasting”. michelegreenmd.com Hair for Now Hair loss on the scalp and brow can elicit a loss in confidence. We can af-fect our health with diet, exercise, and lifestyle. As we age, however, our body’s ability to repair hair follicles and grown new healthy hair on its own diminishes. According to Dr. Tim Neavin, a plastic surgeon with is Medi-cal Director of Artisan Hair Transplant Center in Beverly Hill, “While topical and oral medications like Rogaine and Propecia can be helpful in slowing down hair 89
loss, PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) injections are quickly becoming an ef-fective way to actually repair damaged hair follicles without surgery. PRP uti-lizes your body’s own blood platelets to repair damaged hair follicles and stimu-late regrowth.” For those whose hair follicles are too badly damaged, Dr. Neavin recommends the NeoGraft™ process. “This minimally inva-sive hair restoration procedure utilizes suction-based FUE technology to gently extract hair follicles without any cut-ting or bleeding. The machine then har-vests these follicles, which I’m subse-quently able to implant on the forehead or brow area precisely. This creates a very pleasing aesthetic result for each of my patients. Hair and eyebrow trans-plantation are safe and effective proce-dures to permanently restore beautiful hairlines and create fuller, more bal-anced eyebrows. Stay away from pluck-ing; it kills the hair follicles,” ex-plains Dr. Neavin. artisanhairtransplant.com A Knifeless Breast Lift Sagging breasts can be a drag, and even the best bra is only a temporary fix. As we age our breasts tend to droop and lose volume. Gone are the days when a breast lift meant having to go undergo the scalpel. According to Dr. Barry DiBernardo, Board Certified Plastic Sur-geon and Medical Director of New Jersey Plastic Surgery Associates, “ThermiTight® is an effective, non-surgical breast lift alternative.” ThermiTight® uses radio frequency (RF) energy to tighten and lift the breast tissue up to two inches without visible scarring. The result, according to Dr. DiBernardo is “a more perky and youthful looking bust line.” newjerseyplasticsurgery.com/ dr-barry-dibernardo Private Air New York | Spring 2018

pring is a great time for parties and entertaining. Whether it’s brunch, a barbecue, or just a get together with friends, delicious and appetizing food and drinks should be the center of every celebration. We are what we drink and eat. How can we toast to our good health and imbibe our way to radiant skin? Glutenfree vodkas can have many health benefits when consumed in moderation, which is no more than one cocktail per day for a healthy adult woman. If it’s only going to be a single drink, why not make it a special one? Research shows that consuming vodka in moderation can help reduce stress, which can be beneficial to your mind, body, and skin. Vodka’s medicinal properties have also been shown to reduce your risk of developing heart disease and could possibly reduce your risk of ischemic stroke (when the arteries to your brain become narrowed or blocked) and your risk of diabetes. Unlike vodkas that are made from wheat and grain, consuming a gluten-free vodka may help to prevent against side effects such as bloating, upset stomach, and abdominal pain for those with Celiac disease or sensitive digestion. As we celebrate springtime, here are some savory libations that, when consumed in moderation, can have a myriad of healthful benefits. Cheers to your good health. Private Air New York | Spring 2018

s the name would suggest, Windsor is nothing short of regal. A beautifully designed, artfully adorned and infinitely alluring community founded in the late eighties in Vero Beach, Florida; Windsor is the brainchild of W. Galen Weston and the Honourable Hilary M. Weston. Created against an ocean backdrop, the gated community of Windsor is elegant expression of luxury living designed with signature flair. The award-winning, AngloCaribbean style that defines Windsor is a symphony of classic southern and island home style melded with modern appeal. The homes’ aesthetically striking features include steeply pitched roofs, open eaves, partially exposed rafters, cantilevered balconies, and warmly elegant, neutral colors and are adorned with meticulously groomed gardens – www.privateairny.com

Aptly put. And indeed, Windsor’s ability to wow while at the same time putting guests and residents instantly, totally at ease is par none.
Windsor also beckons the most glittering of international celebrities to its calm shores. In February, Windsor was host to Ignacio ‘Nacho’ Figueras and wife Delfina Blaquier and Mr. and Mrs. Salvatore Ferragamo as they joined some of the world’s top-rated polo players, the Westons and a few hundred of their closest friends for a charity polo tournament benefitting the Michael J Foxx Foundation for Parkinson’s Research and the Alzheimer & Parkinson Association of Indian River County. “The Foundation is honored to be a beneficiary of the 2018 Windsor Charity Polo Cup.” says Michael J. A multicourse luncheon featuring seared duck, fig and manchego crostini, crusted beef tenderloin, and lump crab served alongside wine pairing from Il Borro meant that guests were as well fed as they were well entertained.

HIDDEN HIDEAWAYS From the Swiss Alps to Italy to the United States, Sebastiaan Bedaux’s coffee table book, Mountain View features beautiful breath-taking havens for the elite traveler looking to be immersed in nature. By: Jessica Hall
A
dmittedly I have played this game every year with my family: Would we rather stay in a hotel or stay in a luxury private home?
My answer has always been the same: You can’t go wrong with a five-star hotel. Excellent service, tons of amenities, mini bar, kids club, and minimal interruptions. No need to explain, what I did or didn’t do or forgot to do, every time there’s a knock on the door. But after a recent getaway with my husband to Sedona, my mind somewhat changed. I decided to be ambitious and take the kids on the next journey, thinking it would be a terrific opportunity for us to reconnect as a family. So, I began to do what I do best research my options. And while on the hunt for new gems that are kid-friendly, I came across a new book from Lannoo that showcases some of the most exquisite holiday homes, Mountain View. Mountain View features travel journalist, Sebastiaan Beadux’s, thirty picks of the most stylish hideouts in the world. A plus, all the homes featured are available for rent and have outstanding mountain views. Mountain View highlights not only architecturally beautiful hidden gems but also includes practical information such as contact details for renting the home and suggestions for what to do in the area. The properties range in size and price tags, but all are truly unique, and I can’t wait to take in the incredible architecture and beauty of their natural surroundings! Now available for purchase through Amazon.
