From the Editor year’s April cover photo was of LwonastaBestfriend of mine whose American Cocker Dog in his breed class at Crufts.

This year, a friend of mine won Reserve Best in Show!! Congratulations to Gavin and Sara and of course Jilly, the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, who is distantly related to mine. Apologies next for the dyslexia in last month’s issue. Firstly, Petter submitted the wrong channel numbers for Vintage TV. They are 369 and 515 (not 329 and 512). David of Camping Los Gallardos transposed the middle part of the Miraflores telephone number. I herewith confirm to you all the correct number is 950 469 519. Then I had a moment of my own in the “Diary Dates” section. I didn’t seem to be able to work out that 3rd to 5th should go before 4th to 7th! Was a hectic March for me with moving house and all. Couldn’t believe how much stuff I had crammed into that 2 bed apartment … neither could De Lima’s!! For the record if you are in need of some DIY bits and bobs, and a gas bottle, as I was on a Sunday morning then, Ferreteria Mojácar is open. Unfortunately for me, but not for them, I came out with rather a lot more than I went in for! It’s like an Aladdin’s cave. Lot’s going on in April with St. George’s day, Easter and the Royal Wedding. Most of the events are either in the individual ads or the “Sea View” but you’ll need to check nearer

the days as not all had decided on times, prices, etc. I’m quite looking forward to the wedding and am going to give myself the day off to watch it on t’ tele! Photographer Ian will be doing the rounds, and it’s quite a large round so if he misses you then remember you can always send your photos in to be included. Also remember to let me know what’s going on, and where, and I will endeavour to get it captured. Not much room left so … for those of you with pets, see “Pet Stop” for this month’s crucial advice, Navi-Gator has more www tips on page 8, there’s advice on stopping smoking on page 13, (hey, if I can do it, you can!), Mojacar Community Library’s latest books, themed quiz, and more … And before I sign off … Last month I said The Advertiser was the most popular and longest established advertising medium in the area, well seems it is also popular reading matter as according to my website stats, The Advertiser is read as far away as Australia! Happy Easter to you all, Tracey

month’s “finally” announced that Camping Los Gallardos car boot sale was going to every second Saturday. This month’s “firstly” is to announce that it is now being held EVERY WEDNESDAY from 9am. Stalls are still 3€ each (proceeds to the Almeria Lawn Bowling Club) and all charity stalls are free. Remember Ronnie and Petra who used to have Solo’s (now Gala’s) and also did a stint at La Rambla? Well I had a call from Ronnie to say that he had answered the advert in February’s issue for Park Managers and Assistant Park Managers at Happy Camp Family Holidays and that he was leaving for Milan at the end of the week to start work for them. Hopefully that will allay any fears anyone has about them not being kosher. They are advertising again on this month’s back cover. Zumba Fitness® has become one of the fastest-growing dance-based fitness workouts. Alison of “Get Fit, Stay Fit” has a new Zumba for Beginners class on Thursdays at 9.30am, Indigo Gym, Mojácar Playa, starting with a FREE taster class on Thursday 7th of April. These beginner’s classes are good for people with injuries and arthritis or just to learn the moves before moving onto regular classes. Alison is also starting Pilates for Back Care classes – call her on 637 465 487 for details. If you fancy hitting the high notes the Mojácar based Ladies’ Choir – The Rose Singers – are seeking a top soprano. Rehearsals are Friday mornings in Mojácar. Contact Lyn on 667 275 614 to find out more. Mobility Matters in the Parque Comercial is not just about disabilities. They now have products for everyday problems with muscle or joint aches and pains. They have a number of new lines starting at just a few euros. Pop in and take a look, you'll be impressed by the products and the value for money. Iron Art on the El Real Industrial Estate, Antas are always into something new. They now have P & R Direct based in the unit – suppliers of ready made rugs or rugs made to order. And, included in the next arrival of new stock are mirrors, pictures, bird cages and other nic nacs to spend your hard earned euros on. Zak’s Plaice in Garrucha is doing well with late night orders for fish & chips from customers in bars that don’t do food. Phone your order through on 950 133 193 and the

driver sent to pick it up gets theirs free! It’s summer hours now so last orders is 10pm, last collection 10.30pm. Which has reminded me … Next time you go try the potato scallops instead of chips. I can personally recommend them! I think Zak’s is now the only “English” business still running in Garrucha itself. And of course is a pick up point for your favourite magazine, The Advertiser! Elaine and Jon should have reopened Captains Tapas Bar & Bistro by the time you read this. Watch this space for details of their new menus. 22 addicts will be pleased to know that 22 will be re-opening for the season on the 8th of this month. Plans are afoot for a 3 course lunch on Easter Sunday (chocolate egg and ½ a bottle of wine included). And, a Royal Wedding weekend starting on the Thursday with complimentary cocktails and a special Wedding Breakfast Menu on the day. Bar Valery in its new location, what was Reflections, was expected to open in March, however, when it came to sorting out their ad Jose was still wildly wielding a paintbrush but, all is expected to be open sometime in April including the old Eatz unit where breakfasts, tapas, snacks, etc will be served. Remember that “Job’s Worth” title? Well I think I learned of a worthy wearer. The Loft recently had a routine inspection by the Health Inspector. All was in order except for there not being a No Smoking sign on display! It seems that despite the total No Smoking ban one still has to display a No Smoking sign. Not only that, but it has to have the Junta de Andalucía logo on it! You have been warned!! The Guardia have been boosting their coffers somewhat, recently. A family driving from Almería airport were passed on the motorway by the Guardia on bikes, looking in to the car intently as they rode past. A mile or two on, the family were pulled over by said Guardia. 200€ fine for passenger in back not wearing a seat belt! (reduced to 100€ for paying on the spot). Great start to their holiday! And another instance … A speed camera on the road works on the Los Gallardos to Garrucha road resulted in a 100€ fine for doing 84km in a 60km zone! Now I don’t know if this is true or not but I have been told that you can be fined for unsecured shopping on the back seat of your car! Perhaps not worth taking a chance, eh?! But I have been assured that there is an unmarked police car up

Yes, they have put the bar on the market to sell it ... in terms of leaving they have no intention of going anywhere this year, even if they managed to sell the bar tomorrow. It is business as usual for the foreseeable future! And finally, finally … just checked my notes. “Airport workers in Spain have called off 22 days of strikes which threatened to cause major disruption over the Easter holidays and into the summer.” The news item also said that Spain is seeing an increase in visitor numbers as tourists avoid trouble spots in the Middle East such as Egypt and Tunisia. A great time was had by all at the first Camping Los Gallardos Grand Auction sale, held at Miraflores restaurant. With owner Anthony Jackson as auctioneer, almost 200 lots were sold off in what must have been one of the most enjoyable auctions held in recent memories! Some great bargains were to be had, with a TV going for just one euro; but people had their cash in hand for some of the bigger purchases, with canny bidders going home with wonderful items such as a pool table, motorbike and even a unicycle! Over a hundred and fifty people from across the Levante turned up for the auction, and Anthony and Shirley are already planning the next one, which may well be held in aid of local charities. Meanwhile, by popular demand, the car boot sale at the campsite will now be held every Wednesday from 9am onwards, starting on the 6th April. Stalls are just 3€, and all registered charity stalls are allowed in free. And don't forget to try out their fantastic Full English Breakfast from just 5.50€! © bluwater web design

I have been told that my musical taste is somewhat obscure (a compliment, I’m sure) but Spotify has had everything that I have looked for so far apart from one thing which we will discuss later. Right now John Lee Hooker is spilling his Hobo Blues album out into my lounge with considerable fervour and I have an evening of Soft Machine and Barrett already lined up. All for free and organized by my fingertips from my sofa. Can it get better than this? There are several more great things about this site. It is there whenever I want it and I can make that easier still by saving and organising my own library. I’m not sure what the limit is on saving your own track lists, but it is extensive. You can play single

DJ Navi Gator Is In Da House! I’m a happy jive-bunny. I found a bitchin’ new website that must have been designed and built by Groove-Angels charged by the Great DJ in the sky to bring musical pleasure to the masses. Spotify is the word and you can word-up at www.spotify.com. You can download the easy-to-use software at that addy, for free. So, what is it? Man. This is a big fat and free online jukebox and it is GREAT. The Cats at www.spotify.com have over ten million tracks lying there, waiting, at our disposal. This means I don’t ever have to go rifling through hundreds of CD cases looking for the disc I want to play and also I no longer have to bother with downloading and filing music, music I often want

tracks or whole albums too. This would be a perfect addition to any bar or restaurant. If a customer ever asks for a request you will have it playing about 2 seconds after you have typed the title in. This would not be a fair review if I didn’t mention Spotify’s drawback, and it does have only one. The site is subject to the occasional pop-up, but hey! You gotta take the rough with the smooth, that’s life and that’s rock ’n’ roll. One curious thing about Spotify.com, and I’d love to have this explained to me if anyone knows, is that there are no Beatles tracks on it. There are however loads of Beatles tribute bands and I must recommend a series of albums that I found whilst mooching around. “The Beatles Chill-out” albums. All of the fab four’s great tracks done in a mellow, lying on the sofa and don’t want to be disturbed kinda way. Luvverly. Those of you privileged enough to have satellite TV will have no doubt seen or at least heard of Professor Brian Cox. He is running a superb series of science programmes called “Wonders of the Universe”. This was preceded by “Wonders of the Solar System”. Mr Cox is quite the sex-symbol apparently. The thinking woman’s crumpet, if you please.

It is a superlative show and some bright young things have taken up the comedy gauntlet and made some comedy versions of the show. These are to be found on www.youtube.com. Some of them are hilarious and the titles that follow are highly recommended, one of them HIGH-ly recommended indeed. I am referring to “Wonders of the Stoner System” a cleverly edited film strongly implying that Prof. Cox has a certain overhang from his Pop-Star days. Another good one is “Wonders of the solar system-spoof”. There are a couple of dozen of these on youtube already and there are bound to be many more to follow. I hope you enjoy them. If anyone knows the answer to the question of why the Beatles are not on www.spotify.com please tell me and if you have any other news for our readers let me know at advertisernavigator@msn.com El Navi-Gator.

International Women’s Day Centenary Event On March 8th the Dames in Turre and Dames in Spain joined together at the Centro de Usos multiples in Mojácar to celebrate the centenary of International Women’s Day. The catering was originally for 150 but the event was a sell out and extra seating had to be made available. The event was attended by Rosa Cano Mayoress of Mojácar with Marie Luisa Perez. Bronia Madej de Montero President of AECC Association Espanola Contra el Cancer was also present and the Dames in Turre and Dames in Spain, separately presented her with 1000€ each for Cancer Research. The ladies were entertained by the Dames Singers; Jill Proctor with a concise history of International Women’s Day; Monologue by Val Carrington and Carlotta Arines, Concert Pianist; and Carol Lee, President of the Girls Friendly Society, England and Wales, gave a talk on the past, present and future of this very important organisation. The ladies as usual were very generous and raised on the day 600€ from their raffle which was also presented to Bronia Madej de Montero. A big thank you to Mojácar Ayuntamiento for the use of the facilities and providing a coach; Emporium; Sharon; Paco; Ambiente; Samarkanda; Salas for providing raffle prizes. Finally a thank you should go to both Dames Committee members for all their efforts in making this a memorable day.

The World of Chakras (part II)

by Diana Dudás m.f.h.t. m.i.c.h.t.

The Balanced System I learned on my spiritual path that in order to enhance my spirituality and maintain good health, I needed to know how to balance my chakras. Of course I use Reiki on a daily basis to balance my chakras, I also use crystals, and most importantly I try to eat a balanced diet. It is possible to be relatively balanced through the chakras without being an enlightened Reiki master. People who have done a lot of their own healing work or were lucky in their upbringing may be relatively balanced. What would this look like? The person would be: well grounded and in touch with their body, in good health and vitality, aware of their feelings without being ruled by them, sexually content without being driven, with balanced third chakra they would have confidence and confidence without dominating others, the heart would be compassionate and loving, yet centred and peaceful, could communicate feelings or ideas with truth and clarity and be able to listen to others, their upper chakra would bring imagination, wisdom and a personal connection with spirit. This is an ideal we hope to strive. We all have the means to achieve it, only it takes time, patience and dedication. The work depends entirely on the person's structure and the practitioner's style. The main thing to remember is that body, soul, mind and spirit together with the seven chakras, are one invisible whole. FOOD AND THE CHAKRAS One of the ways to maintain a balanced chakra system is by eating a balanced diet. For example, if you don’t feel grounded eating proteins such as meat, fish and dairy are important. If you want to heighten your spirituality then eat your fruits and veggies. Our physical states are constantly changing and then so must our foods. Your diet must fit your needs, goals and body types. Various types of foods have different vibrational qualities as well and can correspond to the various chakras as follows: Chakra One: Meats and Proteins Meat takes longer to digest than most other foods and, therefore stays in the digestive tract longer. For this reason it uses energy in the lower

part of the body, which could prevent energy from flowing into the upper chakras. Meats and proteins are good for grounding however too much could lead to you feeling sluggish. It is not necessary to eat meat to feel grounded. A vegetarian diet with proper protein can provide enough “foundation food” to keep the first chakra happy. It is then important to eat such foods as, tofu, beans, nuts, eggs and dairy. Chakra Two: Liquids Chakra two is associated with water, therefore pointing to liquids. Liquids pass through the body more quickly and help to cleanse the body and keep kidneys from overloading with toxins. Juices and herbal teas can aid the cleansing process. We must have enough liquid to remain healthy. Chakra Three: Starches Starches are easily converted energy foods. They come from whole grains and are processed by the body more slowly. Simple sugars or stimulants can provide energy, but prolonged use of them will deplete the general health of the third chakra. Addiction to energy foods shows an imbalance of the third chakra. Chakra Four: Vegetables Vegetables trap the vital energy of the sunlight as well a good balance from the earth, air, fire (sun) and water. This will reflect in the balanced nature of the heart chakra. In the Chinese system they are neither yin nor yang, also representing the balance and neutrality of this chakra. Chakra Five: Fruits Fruits are said to be the highest on the food chain because when they are ripe, they drop to the ground and do not require the killing of plants or animals to harvest them. They pass through the system the most quickly of all solid foods and leave the energy free to travel to the upper chakras. Chakras Six and Seven It is difficult to recommend foods for these higher chakras as they are not linked with bodily processes, but with mental states. In relation to food, fasting is most relevant to these upper chakras. Note … It must be understood that by eating more meat you will not automatically become more grounded nor will a diet of pure vegetables open up your heart chakra. Balance is the key.

The new no smoking in public places has made some people think that it may be time to just give it up once and for all. Alternative treatments such as reflexology, reiki and aromatherapy are all helpful. This is because they will put the body into a state of homeostasis. When you feel calm and balanced you are able to cope much better with cravings and will want to feel better. Quitting smoking can be tough, but the benefits to your health are so worth it. Here are a few tips. 1. Think about when you enjoy a cigarette and when you need one then anticipate how you are going to cope in these circumstances. Some people find it helpful to write down these times. If you always have a cigarette in the morning with a coffee, then stop having coffee have fruit juice or water instead so there is not the association/ trigger with smoking. 2. If you feel the need to eat something instead of smoking, decide on a sensible alternative such as sugar free gum or fruit. 3. If you go out socially and associate drinking with cigarettes try holding your glass in your usual cigarette hand. If you associate the drink with smoking avoid the pub for a few days. 4. Identify diversions or distractions that can replace the desire to smoke - physical exercise, chatting with a friend, brushing your teeth. 5. Remember cravings increase in intensity for up to 3 minutes and then subside. Plan how you will distract yourself, deep breathing might be helpful. 6. Get support from fellow quitters. No one ever said stopping smoking is easy - but it can be done. There are 12 million ex-smoker's in the UK - if they can do it so can you! To be successful you have to really want to stop and you have to be ready. What happens to your body when you stop smoking? Believe it or not - the benefits to your health start from within 20 minutes of you putting out your last cigarette. Your body will begin to repair the damage done through smoking almost immediately,

Here is a little true story to warm the cockles of your heart and restore your faith in the power of prayer. Diane, APSA homing officer has a little dog called Mouse, who had been waiting for the right home for some time. Diane thought she had finally found it and was very happy. The same day that Mouse had started life in her new home, she went missing. The lady called Diane who then set out to look for her. For three days Diane spent every spare moment scouring the area for this little dog, who by now must have been very cold, and frightened. No luck. Diane happened to be relaying this story to a gentleman who said that he would pray to St. Anthony. Well, anything is worth a try. The next day, Diane was on her way up to the kennels in Tijola. She decided, for some unknown reason, to take a different route. Lo and behold, as she is driving along, some sixth sense kicked in and who does she find? Yes, you've guessed it, little Mouse, looking very sorry for herself and thoroughly traumatised by her experience. She has now glued herself very firmly to Diane and has made her promise not to do that to her again. Thank you St Anthony.

EASTER SUNDAY Shock, Horror! English Library Discovered In Albox It’s funny how an adverse situation can sometimes work in your favour. Like a lot of businesses and organisations the Almanzora Group of Friends in Albox was feeling the pinch and was forced to move premises for the second time in 8 years. Originally based in the Albox indoor market and paying a peppercorn rent they were forced to move when redevelopment was imminent. Their second premises were not ideal and not cheap, but at the time there was not a lot of choice. With many shops and bars laying empty in the current climate they were able to move to a prime location in Avenida Lepanto.

So how do you move a library and assorted bookcases, shelves and furniture in just 2 and a half days? You call for help from amongst your 500 plus members, and “Madre Mia!” an army of volunteers is queuing out the door, whilst the street is clogged with 4x4s and trailers! Our local friendly greengrocer helped with the loan of dozens of plastic crates, this saved Centre manager Bev Cross the task of scavenging in the local skips for boxes. Whilst the DIY team, a superior version of DIY SOS, (minus Nick Knowles!) stripped the old and prepared the new premises which had been professionally painted by President David Durrant. All this activity was noticed by passers by and during the move people were stopping, having a nosey and saying “An English library, what a good idea!” Although not planned the new centre had their official opening at 44 Avenida Lepanto on World Book day, Thursday 3rd March. How spooky is that? The Almanzora Group of Friends is an organisation originally set up in 2000 to help Expats settle in the Almanzora Valley and surrounding area. They have an extensive English library and information centre, run entirely by volunteers, with over 5000 books, plus DVDs, videos, games and information leaflets. They organise cultural trips and social evenings for their members as well as producing a monthly magazine.

Phil Naylor had a lovely surprise en route to Cabrera … There were at least 15 Bee-eaters feeding constantly after their long flight from Africa! There are about 24 different species of bee-eater worldwide & “our” one is the European Bee-eater (Merops apiaster). It winters in subSaharan Africa (where it is culled in large numbers by bee-keepers!) & migrates north to breed about now, mainly crossing the straits of Gibraltar then spreading out across S & E Europe as far as NE France & Russia. They nest in holes which they excavate in sandy banks. They feed, as the name suggests, on bees & wasps which they take on the wing then return to a perch where they sometimes swipe the insect vigorously against the perch to remove the sting or just eat it, sting & all! Watch for them high overhead when their calls give them away or perched on wires in numbers from where they fly up to swoop on their prey. You’ll not see a more colourful bird in Europe! Pet Stop

LEISHMANIASIS, TICKS & FLEAS Now is the time to plan your pets protection against Leishmaniasis, although in many Mediterranean countries infection is possible through the winter months, if the temperature doesn't drop below 20 degrees centigrade at night, the insects can remain active. The main season is May to October, mainly dusk to dawn, heightened activity is between 2am to 4am and the worst month is August. Leishmanias is endemic in most of Greece, Italy, the Balkans, Malta, southern France as far north as Lyons, Portugal, Spain, the Balearics, and the humid parts of North Africa. An animal can be bitten up to 100 times an hour during the season. Leishmaniasis is spread by a tiny mosquito called the Phlebotamus mosquito. It is also called a sandfly which is very misleading as, people often think that if they don't take their pets on the beach then they will not contract the disease. It has absolutely nothing to do with sand, the risk is equally spread in town, countryside and woodland and they are in your homes too. Mosquito nets at doors and windows will help to keep them out, they are not high flyers so there is less risk in an upper room at night or if you live in an apartment. Animals outside all night are particularly at risk. The most effective preventative treatment is the "SCALIBOR" collar, it gives approx. 95% protection and lasts for 6 months so buying another collar at the end of the time will give a years protection, they are available from vets and pet shops. Another form of protection is the spot on treatments,

PAGE 22

these have to be applied every month, if you forget your pet is not protected. Keep pets inside the house after sunset, toilet breaks to a minimum before bedtime and avoid night walks near running water. Leishmaniasis is a severe and often fatal disease, it is spread by the bite of the female mosquito who needs blood to make her eggs, NOT every female mosquito bite will pass on the disease, she must first have bitten an infected animal. If she is infected then the Leishmania parasite will grow in her stomach, when she bites again infective forms of the parasite are injected into the skin of her next victim. A blood test will show if the animal is infected with Leishmaniasis, but symptoms are: loss of weight even with a good appetite, loss of coat particularly around the eyes, muzzle and often other parts of the body too, dry skin with dandruff, overgrown and twisted claws, eye troubles, nose bleeds, in fact anything which is not normal for your pet should be investigated. Internal organs will be affected, any changes of drinking habits or urination could mean it is the kidneys. There is no vaccination for Leishmaniasis but there is treatment, the sooner it is diagnosed and treatment started the better. Direct infection from one animal to another is unlikely and animal to human has never been reported even among vets who handle hundreds of infected animals. Erring on the side of caution though, avoidance of direct contact between very sick dogs and babies or toddlers and people with a reduced resistance to infections is sensible. This said, there is no cause to panic, there is no need to have your dog put to sleep. Animals are still infectious during treatment but much less after treatment. They are not immune and can be reinfected again.

- if your pet is wearing a SCALIBOR collar then you need a tick treatment which does not react against the chemicals in the collar. WEARING A 'SCALIBOR' COLLAR AND AN INCOMPATIBLE 'ANTI-TICK' COLLAR CAN BE DETRIMENTAL TO YOUR DOGS HEALTH. Your vet can advise the best treatments to put together for full protection, the choice of which will also be governed by the size of the pet and its living habits, e.g. if the dog sleeps on your bed or if your pet has a history of allergic reactions. Ticks are flourishing at the moment so, if you find a tick on your pet, the easiest way to remove it is with a special tick remover. There are two types available: the "TRIX" and "O TOM". TO REMOVE THE TICK - using the tick remover, place it around the head of the tick and rotate the tick 2 or 3 times to the left (anti-clockwise), the tick should come out whole with the head intact. NEVER PULL AT THE BODY OF THE TICK as it will break off and leave the head buried in the skin. Inspect the tick you have removed to make sure you have the head, if it is left in the animal, an abcess can form. Never use any of the old wives tales to remove the tick such as a cigarette, chemicals or vaseline, etc., you will cause the tick to regurgitate its stomach contents into the bloodstream and infect the animal. It may be possible to use tweezers to remove the tick but grasp only by the head and twist anti-clockwise to 'unscrew' the tick. Then go out and buy your TICK TREATMENT, the ticks will still go on the pet and bite them but the tick treatment will kill them. You can buy your tick treatments from Ashlove’s Pet House, Mojacar Multicentro, next to Veterinaria Europa or from Pets Paradise, Los Gallardos, near the petrol station. PLEASE consult your vet if you are not sure which treatments go together without reacting against each other.

TICKS - The "SCALIBOR" collar is no longer effective against ticks, therefore, you need a tick treatment too. CAUTION

FLEAS - If you are treating for ticks then the product you use will most probably treat any fleas too. If your pet does have

fleas as well then talk to your vet about worming. CAUTION - Please be sure to check the product you are buying is suitable for the species of pet you want to treat. Some products are fatal if used on pets that it was not meant for. You will also need to know the weight of the animal. PLEASE NOTE - If your pet is ill and needs treatment after being on holiday with you in any country where Leishmaniasis and Tick Fever are prevalent or, you travel to a country which does not have these problems, please inform the vet you consult where you have been, often they do not test nor consider these diseases if it is not endemic in their own country. Crucial time and expense can be saved if the vet is told. Even if it is sometime after your holiday that the pet falls ill, still inform the vet to take it into consideration. The "TRIX" is available from: Miso Trading: www.misotrading.co.uk The "O TOM" from: www.medicanimal.com 00 44 (0)203 058 0500 NOTE - the above is for advice only and is not intended to replace the expert diagnosis and specialist treatment of your veterinarian whose advice is always the best.

Friday 18th March was also Pam’s birthday, which, although not a special one, got swamped by the Golden Wedding.

Pets of the Moment

Charity 4718 / CIF: G04691283

GENERAL ENQUIRIES 678 490 217 SOOTY - is both people and dogfriendly and has a steady temperament. She is happy, outgoing and typical of a young dog her age, liking to play, explore her surroundings, enjoy life and socialise.

FRODO - A dog who is very friendly though a little reserved at first when he doesn’t know you. He doesn’t throw himself all over you but just says "hello" politely. Though he is companionable with other dogs, Frodo is a little unsure in some dog groups as he doesn’t quite know his place in the pack. He doesn’t like to start trouble but if feeling cornered will tell the others to go away. He is an easy dog to have around, he’s intelligent and would be easy to train. He’d make a nice pet. AUSTIN - How could anyone not like Austin, with his funny eyes and smushed in Boxer face? An endearing older dog, he is still playful and athletic. He has made such a strong impact on a volunteer that he gets to go for sleepovers to his house on the weekends. Austin does pull on the leash but he is just happy to go somewhere with you. His pulling can be managed, though. Austin is good with other dogs but needs to be fed separately as he food guards. Unfortunately, Austin has eye problems so has diminished sight. Can you give him a loving home for him to enjoy his golden years?

CHARLIE - Rough coated terrier, D.O.B approx. 11.2009. Found tied to a tree and was taken in by a member of the public. He is very chatty and playful, gets on well with all other dogs.

POOCHY - a Terrier cross. D.O.B. 01/07/2008 - vaccinated. She is a gentle little dog, loves everyone, very sociable and is a genuine lovable pet. Would enjoy being with a family.

PUPPY RESCUE in SPAIN Calle Málaga, Albox, 04800. CIF: G04698817 Caring for abandoned, abused and neglected puppies in the Albox area.

KOOPER - last of 5 pups dumped in a garden, cold and dirty, D.O.B 30/10/09. Loving pup, now full of life and waiting for new home, will be medium size. MARTA - is an energetic and playful young dog. She likes people and other dogs alike. She is starting to walk on a lead but still gets a little excited because life is so fun and full of adventure.

To visit any of the dogs in our care please contact Phil or Paul at The Dog House on 626 766 073 or go to the website: www.thedoghousehuercal-overa.webs.com

DEMPSEY - born Sept 2010, Jack Russell type, will not grow much more. Lively, friendly chap just wants to play and be loved.

If you can give any of our dogs a good foster or permanent home please ring 667 623 254 www.puppyrescueinspain.org

CIF: G04491221

PASTY - is about 8 yrs old and was abandoned on the rambla. He loves to play and will fetch all day if you throw something for him. He would make a lovely family pet.

If you would like further information on PAWS Cats contact Diane on 950 617 643 or Ruth 637 817 982.

MINA - was rescued from being stoned to death. Despite this, she is a very loving dog.

TRON LEGACY Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund, Troy, Four brothers) the tech savvy 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges, Tron the original 1982 version) looks into his father's disappearance and finds himself pulled into the same world of fierce programs and gladiatorial games where his father has been living for 20 years. Along with Kevin's loyal confidant, father and son embark on a life-and-death journey across a visually-stunning cyber universe that has become far more advanced and exceedingly dangerous. I was 10-years-old when the original film first came out and remember being blown away by the visual effects, that you have to realize had never been seen before, and thinking to myself that cinema could never get any better than that one film. It’s taken 29 years for the follow up to this masterpiece and I can safely say that I personally am as giddy as a 10-year-old boy yet again.

Mojacar’s new Art Gallery opens at last! Friends and fellow artists, Jayne Raine and Jill Bennett have the honour of holding their joint exhibition in Mojacar’s new art gallery which was opened by the Mayor at the end of March. The Centro de Arte Municipal, the ‘Fuente de Mojacar’ is just behind the fuente in the pueblo. Jayne, who has a British Bachelor of Art Honours Degree in Three Dimensional Design specialising in Interior Design, has worked in Higher and Further Art Education in the UK for 20 years, specialising in 3D design, drawing and the arts applied. She is now based in Almeria province where she is currently developing her own work. Jayne is exploring the phenomena of Fiesta in the region. This exhibition shows a selection of digital images depicting movement and the passion, energy and excitement of Fiesta. Jill, who also has a 1st class Bachelor of Arts Honours Degree, was a senior lecturer in Art and Design as well as a freelance fashion and interior designer. She has lived in Mojacar for over 7 years and now concentrates on illustrations of fashion, flamenco and dance and the colourful costumes of Spanish fiestas, particularly the Moors and Christians which inspired her to produce the Mojacar poster in 2010. Well in advance, her artwork has already been selected for the special anniversary 2012 poster. Her other specialism is mural and trompe l’oeil ‘trick of the eye’ work which she has produced for many clients in their homes and businesses. The exhibition will have an additional inauguration at 7pm on Friday April 8th to which you are invited to view the collection and meet the artists. If you cannot make it on the night, the exhibition will be open until May 2nd (including Easter) from Tuesday to Friday 10.30am to 1.30pm and 5pm to 8pm, Saturday and Sunday 11am to 2pm. If you require additional information or would like to visit the gallery at an alternative time, you may ring Jill on 950 478 383.

www.advertisermojacar.com Michael Theis 1930 – 2011 Born and bred in Croydon, Surrey, Michael attended Whitgift School and achieved honours in all his subjects. He then did an apprenticeship as an engineer with Creeds Engineering. He then did his National Service with the R.A.F and when he left was a Commissioned Officer and a Flight Controller. He then found that computers was his forte and became a programmer. Michael also taught adults the International Language of Computers for T.O.P.P.S. (Teaching Of Professional Persons Service). He was a very learned man who enjoyed passing on his knowledge. He then married and had 2 daughters, Katrina and Karyn. He was widowed in 1975 and he re-married his long time friend Stella in 1978. After moving to Devon, Michael decided that Spain was the place for him, and he came over on a 4 day “look see” and he found a little village on a hill called Mojácar. He immediately fell in love with the place, (as so many do), and he bought a little house on the Playa. Michel and Stella moved here in 1988. He amused himself by writing the odd article for “The Talisman”, and was an active member of the R.B.L. In 2002 Michael and Stella moved to Turre, to a little house on the hill, where he could still see his beloved Mojácar. Michael had many friends and acquaintances, and was one of the “originals” of Mojácar. He was an extremely happy and contented man and was known for his powerful and well spoken voice. His daughter Karyn, moved next door to him in 2005 as his health was failing, and in 2007 he suffered a stroke. But Karyn nursed him back to health and he could often be seen being pushed along the Playa in his wheelchair. He had to move back to the U.K. in 2010 when his health started to fail again. When his eldest daughter, Katrina, died suddenly in January this year, he was not able to cope with the shock, and sadly he died in hospital with his daughter Karyn by his side, as she had been for the previous 5 years. He loved his little piece of Spain, and his ashes will be scattered from the mountain above Mojácar, so he can always look over his little village, his little piece of magic. He is sadly missed by Stella, Karyn and his 4 grandchildren, Daniel, Ross, Bethan and Tom. Mojàcar in the clouds … Ghostly!! Written by Karyn email cazsmith@aol.com

APRIL Birth Flower: The April Birth Flower is

the Sweet Pea, a climbing garden plant having fragrant pastel-coloured flowers. The name "Sweet Pea" is derived from the Latin "Lathyrus odoratus" meaning 'pea' and 'fragrant'. Also spelt sweetpea and originated in Italy in the 17th century. The colours of the Sweet Pea, are extremely varied because so many varieties have been developed and therefore come in a huge mix of soft colours and bi-colours. Meaning: Good-bye or Blissful Pleasure. Hidden message: favoured during the Victorian era was "Thank You for a Lovely Time".

By The Other Half ‘Oh to be in England now that Spring is here.’ I can’t remember who first uttered these fateful words, but I was unwise enough to express them while looking out of the window at a good crop of weeds in the garden on a day that was overcast, cold and windy, while the BBC weather girl was prattling on about sun and 17 degrees in the South West. I felt the Higher Authority’s eyes boring a hole in my back, and knew that today was not the day for random poetry. ‘Wordsworth.’ I explained limply and probably inaccurately. ‘I thought he was daffodils and lonely clouds.’ She countered. Before our combined lack of poetical know-how could get any deeper she dived in with; ‘Mind you, if we were in England now, we could celebrate Easter, St George’s Day and the Royal Wedding all in one month.’ I gazed at her bleakly. She had the determined look of a woman who wanted a holiday, looking at a man who did not, but who was about to agree to one. ‘But the wedding will be so much better on the telly. You’ll be able to see it all, the dress, the ring, everything, all in close up without standing for hours in a crowd on a hard pavement in the rain.’ ‘It might not rain.’ She stated defiantly. ‘April showers.’ I could see by her face that I had made my point. Quickly I followed up with; ‘And St George’s Day, aren’t you going to the party?’ ‘What party?’ Oh. Too much haste, I knew of no party, but necessity is the mother of invention, and I was up against it, party-wise. ‘We were only saying yesterday that we ought to have a street party, and your name was top of the list for arranging it.’ I felt my nose in case it had suddenly sprouted in response to this thundering lie, but a thoughtful look came over her face. ‘H’m, I suppose I could….’ She pondered. I know how much she enjoys gratuitous stress in the form of organising things, and I was congratulating myself on this master stroke of misdirection when she attacked on my blind side. ‘What about Easter? What about Easter eggs and walks in the park?’ I rallied magnificently. ‘There are chocolate Easter chickens in Mercadona, bunnies in Lidl’s, and who wants a boring walk in the park when there are all those magnificent Semana Santa parades to watch?’ ‘Where?’ ‘Um – Lorca. I’ll take you to Lorca.’ She melted. ‘Will you really?’ I swallowed hard and smiled. I had won. Well, sort of! PAGE 31

I sighted a whale recently of some description about a km in front of the Beac hcomber and it was heading south. After posting the sighting on facebook live it was confirmed by a few other people. Hopefully we will have a different scenario because the last time I saw one, it or another, turned up on a Cabo de Gata beach dead. Is it just coincidence or could it be because Spain’s submarine is off shore probably heading for Libya, collateral damage I suppose? I also received reports of big numbers of dolphins (from three sources) off the coast in front of the big 4 star hotels, Oasis Tropical etc, not that unusual, but worrying. The Spring Equinox was last week and so a lot of fish and sea mammal activity can be expected. In fact it wasn’t far off this time last year when there were so many dorada bream in Garrucha marina they were jumping out on the dock (OK so I’m exaggerating a bit!). Locals were lined up two abreast casting their lines and fish were

being caught on bare hooks. (no exaggeration this time) This may not be the case this year as security and Guardia have stopped any fishing within the marina but there are still spots that can be reached which will no doubt provide some good catches. Received a report, some Spanish lads were catching a lot of squid (40 to 50 two nights running) on Mackerel feathers last week. ‘London Bill’ tells me the dorada are in the area with quite a few striped bream. Opposite where ‘Captain Brian Cuba’s’ boat used to be moored, in the new part of the Garruc ha marina, is a fishing tackle shop. Apparently it will have to close by October and the owner hasn’t been offered an alternative location. With the road closed outside his premises it might be a waste of time him opening anyway. Brian took five mates out on his Garrucha moored fishing boat and they caught well, with about 50 fish between them. They boated some very big combers and pandoras, weighing up to 2lbs. On this occasion most of the bigger fish were kept and given to the marina mafia! (Brownie points) See photo of one of Brian’s mates with a comber. ‘Captain Pete Pugwash’ was out with ‘Radio Ham Kevin’ and anchored only 50 yards away from where

Brian was fishing and they caught next to nothing, three fish I think, but that’s fishing eh? The weather took a turn for the worse and neither Capitano got out again in the week. ‘Baza Barry’ fished with mates on the River Segura in Murcia town and three of them bagged 100lb of fish between them with carp to 6lbs. RADIO-TAXI 950 22 22 22 PAWS IN CRISIS – UPDATE The Mojácar-based PAWS animal rescue charity hit crisis point last month with an announcement midMarch that it would have to close - as things stood the bank account would be empty by the start of April. The announcement came during a Monday radio interview with Richard Shanley on Spectrum FM. He promptly launched a ‘Save PAWS’ appeal, and since then offers of help have been flooding in on a daily basis. By the end of the week PAWS was able to announce that a six-month reprieve now looked possible, although the Society was still not out of the woods. As we go to press that is still the situation. PAWS has announced a series of emergency measures, principally that the Rescue Shelter will take in no new animals until further notice, and the public have been asked to respect this. PAWS still has 160 animals in its care and cannot take more until their future can be guaranteed. An organisational re-structuring is under way and PAWS will operate on a

The crisis was triggered by the sudden closure of its support organisation PAWS Holland, who had given €25.000 annually in direct financial support. This had allowed PAWS to expand its operation. The loss has now produced the reverse effect. PAWS is immensely grateful for all the support it has received. The public are being kept informed through a bulletin on its website www.paws-patas.org which is updated daily. There is an Appeal Response page detailing the many offers of help, which can be made through the PAWS email address pawsenquiries@gmail.com
