From the Editor W

ell here we are, the middle of the year already. Am I the only one who finds time flies scarily fast? Very well done to Dave, pictured on the front cover, for quitting smoking for a year. I know how much of an achievement that is, as my year without smoking was reached just 5 days later on 28th May. Photographer Ian’s camera has been smoking again. There has been so much going on I can hardly fit it all in so, as complete albums can be viewed on his facebook page … bluwater web design … I’ve only put a selection of photos in for each event. If you do visit the albums on facebook you’ll also find St George’s Day and Royal Wedding Day photos. I, and the respective ‘advertisees’ have received some pretty good feedback from last month’s issue proving The Advertiser to be extremely flexible in its format, reaching all areas of advertising needs. The Cool Air report has generated new and existing business – existing apparent due to Richard’s change of telephone number from last year’s report; the “new menu” drew new customers into El Naranjo, Los Gallardos; a bed for sale on the classified page resulted in 31 calls; Roly, last month’s PAWS cat was rehomed as a direct result of his appearance in this magazine and organisers of the Book Sale held at the Beachcomber, in aid of Paws/Alstrays cats, every second Tuesday are convinced that the increase in the amount raised was as a direct result of my publishing a photo of it last month. Not much room left so as summer approaches time to rethink your advertising campaign to target the tourists … Be seen, not heard! There’ll not be many, if any, listening to the radio but they will pick up something to read. I’ll leave you with thoughts of increasing temperatures, though it has been rather warm already. According to the Tálisman thermometer 24th May was the first day this year that the temperature rose above 30 degrees. It peaked at 31 degrees, in the shade, just after 3pm. Also, for the first time this year, the temperature on the night of May 24/25th never went below 20 degrees. At its lowest point the temperature was still 21 degrees! Phew!! Until next month,Tracey

There’s something fishy been going on at The Wacky Hair Salon! They are now offering the ‘Dr Fish’ Pedicure which has been proving popular all over the UK. It involves sitting with your feet in a tank and letting lots of tiny little Garra Rufa fish nibble away any dead skin. It can also work wonders for skin conditions. I’ve been assured that they don’t bite, in fact they haven’t even got teeth. The pedicure just feels like a gentle, relaxing massage and leaves feet looking and feeling refreshed. For appointments and info call into the salon or telephone 667 961 645. Lubrin Fun Run and Walk will take place on 18th June from Bar Las Delicias. As a result of the successful Spring concert the Rose Singers were pleased to be able to donate 200€ to the PAWS fund, and also 200€ to Asadis - a charity for disabled children in the Los Gallardos area. Despite there being many events on during April the concerts were appreciated by an enthusiastic audience on each night. They thank all who attended, without whom they would not be able to give to charitable causes. Make a date in your diary for their Autumn concert which will be held at the beginning of November and will include music to suit all tastes. Also, they are still seeking a top soprano. It’s official … ‘Gig In The Parque II’ will be on Friday 15 July, provisionally starting at 8pm. Last year the first ‘Gig In The Parque’ was an outstanding success and managed to attract more than a thousand people even though it was competing with Spain’s televised World Cup semi-final game! Since then, people have approached the organiser in the street asking if there’ll be another GIG this year. The Town Hall has had similar enquiries and so this year The Ayuntamiento de Vera is fully supporting the event. ‘Gig In The Parque’ will be a major part of the Town’s 2011 cultural programme and as last year, will be a multicharity event. As well as supporting all participating charities from Vera and the surrounding pueblos this year they are also inviting clubs, associations and other cultural, social and sporting groups to take part, raising awareness of their activities and to recruit members. Last year the GIG featured nine culturally diverse acts during a six hour programme. This year they are looking to extend the range of music and the length of the programme. There is a lot of work to be done so anyone wishing to take part needs to confirm their availability as soon as possible. Contact Harvey Defriend by telephone 678 682 574 or e-mail: solarcity@avired.com. There’s a new Craft Fair on Wednesdays at Malibu (formerly Mariela’s) apparently where you will find English branded clothing, Tibetan jewellery, new books, paintings, handmade soap, silver jewellery, homemade pies and cakes, clothing accessories, makeup, designer handbags and more.

hospital in the Barranco el Negro area of Turre have been unveiled. The new infrastructure, described as one of the most important projects carried out in the area, has a budget of more than €40 million. The project also promises to create a considerable number of jobs: more than 1,500 posts for the construction and more than 200 direct contracts. The Turre Hospital will be similar to the Hospital in Huercal Overa and the private company specializing in medical assistance calculates it will offer more than 200 beds, with facilities, equipment and health professionals at the disposition of residents and those requiring medical attention. The works are expected to take two years to complete and once works get underway, local businesses, the tourism sector and the area in general will benefit. Remember Siobhan and Alan of Bar La Montaña, well, Siobhan and a friend of hers from England have set up a new site on Facebook called Visit Mojacar – although it actually covers other areas apart from Mojacar. Siobhan is always sending information emails to help support the area so this seemed like the next step and within 24 hours it had received 50 ‘Likes’. She’s going to send me more info about it so watch this space. A PAWS fundraiser is being held on Saturday 25th June at Cortijo Tio Salvador, Camino El Quinto, (Turre Road), Mojacar. Entertainment in the form of 2 Monologues by Alan Bennett (comedy and pathos), "The hand of God" by Paul Woolliscroft and "Nights in the gardens of Spain" by Janet Franklin. Tickets are 10€ with a choice of times. Matinee at 3.30pm to include afternoon tea sandwiches, cakes, etc. and tea or a glass of cava. Evening at 7.30pm to include glass of wine or cava and tapas. CLAIRE (not Charlie as I put in last month’s ad - sorry!) celebrated her birthday with family & friends at The Emerald Isle

www.advertisermojacar.com

Continued from last month ... Lee and Nicki Wakeman are the driving force behind Almeria Angels, this region’s best known nursing agency and 24hr support service, based in Mojácar. Q: Almeria Angels Nursing & Homecare Services has been running for a number of years now and in the summer of 2010 you launched your new 24 hour Emergency Support Service to the residents of the Levante region. How was this service conceived, and what are the benefits to your members? Lee … After working with our clients for a number of years, and seeing what was available to the Ex-pat community, we saw that there was a real need for a more comprehensive support service that could be available to people 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. So, we set up the Almeria Angels Emergency Support Service on a membership only basis. This allows us to dedicate substantial resources to our members, meaning that at the touch of a button via either their home unit, or their dedicated Angels mobile phone, no matter how great or small the emergency, one of our trained British operators will be there to assist them. We securely store a detailed medical history of each member, which is automatically displayed when an emergency call comes in, giving the operator and the on-call nurse a full profile of the member who requires assistance. The on-call nurse can also be despatched and the client call transferred to her mobile phone on route. This means that in the event of a more serious medical emergency, the nurse can remain in contact with the client throughout the journey to the clients' property, and that no time is lost when every second counts. Q: It's an impressive service and did you say all the Emergency Support Staff are native English speakers? Lee … Yes, that's right! Which means there's no language issue for our clients when dealing with medical matters, or in an emergency when a client’s stress levels may be running high. An Angels operator will liaise with any of the Emergency services for our members, giving precise directions to the property, as well as GPS locations, so as to avoid delays in reaching our clients. Q: So with all that in mind, will we see Almeria Angels in other regions along the Spanish coast? Lee … Well! We already have a nursing agency in Mazarron which we launched in 2009, and which has proven to be a great success and we're currently in the process of opening another office in the Malaga region, which will offer our 24

hour Support Service as well as our home and hospital care services. Q: Are you both enjoying the Spanish way of life? Nicki … I love it! It's everything I thought it would be! Also, being able to continue nursing is fantastic, it's what I wanted to do when we first moved out here but I wasn't sure if it would be possible, not without a very good level of Spanish. Lee … I have a beautiful wife & daughter and get up every morning knowing I have job satisfaction helping so many of our local community. Plus the sky is usually blue … Q: Since moving to Spain I know there has been a new addition to the family. Nicki … That's right! We had our daughter here in Huercal Overa hospital, she's now 20 months old and definitely has her own little personality. Lee … She goes to a Spanish nursery where I believe she is one of only two English children. So it's great for her integration and she will obviously speak and understand a reasonable level of Spanish when she starts school at the end of the summer next year. Q: Do you think Spain is a better option than England when bringing up a child and offers greater opportunities? Lee … Definitely! She's going to grow up speaking and writing both English and Spanish fluently. This, coupled with what will hopefully be a good academic career, will give her a great opportunity and should open up many more markets, not just Spain and the UK. I also think it's a much safer environment for children here and the Spanish seem to be a little more tolerant of children than we are in the UK. Q: And what does the future hold for you both? Lee … Well we're concentrating on the business at the moment and will do so for the foreseeable future. We're enjoying our life here in Spain as a family and wouldn't want to change anything. We're happy to be able to provide a necessary service to the local community and want to be able to offer the same service to other people in other areas. Maybe we can catch up in a year’s time and I'll tell you how we've got on.

After that you can all enjoy the sufferings of a hungry dog. I’m a bit chuffed with myself today. Allow me to share. After searching for nearly 2 years for a decent and practical way around the licensing problems that prevent ex-pats watching BBC iPlayer, I have found a solution that really does work. Because of legal reasons I cannot tell you that I have tried it, even if I had, that could be deemed to be an admittance of guilt. Lets just say … it definitely works! Now to pull this off properly things are going to get a bit tricky but your Navigator has done all the hard work for you, you just have to pay attention for a while … ready? First you need to visit www.hidemy-ip.com . This is a website that, believe it or not, hides your true IP address and replaces it with another for anonymous surfing. The website is easy to understand and navigate. On the home page you will see a box to click for the free 14 day trial download, if you don’t want to buy into it straight away. Once you have installed this you will have to pull a cunning trick. Here’s the problem. In hiding your true IP address you are given a new one, just to borrow for a while. You are more likely than not to be given a U.S. based IP address, which still does not get you around the licensing problems associated with BBC iPlayer. However, there is a selection on the options to select a time frame for automatically

changing your new IP addy at regular intervals. Its default setting is every 10 minutes but you can change it from every 1 minute to pretty much whatever you want. Also, and this is important, you can switch off the auto-changer. I’ll get to why this is important very soon. To get your new IP addy you will need to run the program you have downloaded, click on the box stating, “Hide my IP”. Once you have done that you will be shown your new addy. If it says in the accompanying details any country other than the U.K. then click the box again which is now saying “Un-hide my IP”. Repeat this process until you get a U.K. addy and then un-tick the aforementioned auto-changer. This is vital if you don’t want to lose your connection mid programme. Once you have an IP address for the U.K. you simply go to your normal browser and type www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer and Bob’s your Muvva’s Bruvva. Just as a point of reference for you. I got my IP address for the U.K. on the 3rd attempt and it took less than a minute. Now! I am not sure where the law stands on all this. In much the same way I didn’t know where the law stood as a kid when I would slip a cassette into the Hi-Fi and record the Pop Charts on a Sunday evening. I presume the law now stands in a more or less identical position with its hands on its hips and a rather stern expression upon its face, but I don’t know. You can take that as a warning or you can ignore me. There, that’s the serious bit done. Let’s go and watch telly on the computer. During the last week or so there has been a fantastically funny viral doing the rounds on Facebook (or Facey as I now

affectionately call it). It is of a talking dog and his owner, who is teasing the poor creature with food. I have not seen anything this funny in ages and I must have watched it 10 times already. You can find it by going to www.youtube.com Once there, type “Dog Tease” into the search box. Click on the selection that shows a scruffy looking German Shepherd Dog. It is sure to be at the top of the list. I promise you will laugh out loud and if you don’t I’ll give you your money back. I should point out, for the feeble minded, that the dog isn’t really suffering, neither is it actually talking. Its just a joke … ok? Sea View SALON OF EXCELLENCE & HAIR ACADEMY Market Square, Turre

Continued from page 5 ...

Beth Underhill first opened Etticut’s doors in 2007 in Vera and since then the salon has gone from strength to strength moving to Turre for larger premises. One of the factors behind the success of Etticut is that this is not an enterprise to stand still. Due to demand the salon is now established as an official hair academy, registered with Vera Town Hall. This is the only English-speaking academy of this kind in the Turre area, and further consolidates Etticut’s status as one of the Levante region’s hairdressing centres of excellence. The salon employs Katey who not only is a lovely person to work with says Beth, but Katey also creates some beautiful, modern and classic styles, Naomi who started as one of the Academy’s students in 2009 is now employed by Beth and is proving to be a great asset to the business with her flair for hair and creativity. Beth has recruited Julie, a tutor from the UK who will work with her to ensure new students are trained to the usual highest of standards in hairdressing using the benefit of her teaching skills. Julie is qualified to teach and assess hairdressing up to HNC, she has been teaching for a number of years in colleges up and down the country. Beth loves teaching, and obviously the Etticut academy is an entirely logical progression for the business. The academy opened its doors in Vera in April 2009 and, so great is demand, that Beth has decided to start a class two evenings a week to accommodate student numbers, which will be of huge interest to anyone who works during the day and who wants to retrain as a hair stylist. Students will receive a high standard of training. Beth is a hairstyling trainer and assessor and works to City & Guilds standards. Julie is a qualified teacher of hairdressing. The part-time course runs for approximately one year, students attending a class one evening a week (the evening course will run over two evenings), with another half day in the salon for practice. Beth keeps class numbers to a maximum of six, so that each student gets plenty of individual attention. There are plenty of opportunities for hands-on experience in the salon under the careful supervision of Beth and Julie. Beth also organises for students to attend training courses outside the salon in such areas as the latest techniques and looks; recent courses attended by Etticut students were on the next season’s styles and a L’Oreal training course on new colours. Students are required to buy a college kit; Beth orders the kits from a very reputable supplier at a very reasonable price, and stresses students don’t have to buy a full kit to begin with, but can build up their kits as they go along. “I think the Etticut courses are an inexpensive way of acquiring skills which can be taken anywhere”, comments Beth.

compared to 4€ with Vodafone and much more with Movistar. Our latest piece of equipment is a digital box that will accept any SKY card so, if you are renting a property in Spain you can tell your clients to bring over their card and put it in this box for all the channels they get at home. This is a FREE VIEW box so if you are having a problem with some of your normal BBC & ITV channels you can change to this box to sort out the problems. It is an HD box so you can get all your HD channels through this as well and in fact, if you do not have an HD TV the channels will still display on your television because the signal is stronger. SKY have moved all the HD channels to the top of the list, so quite simply they are going to be the strongest signals. If you like the idea of this box, why not call into our office on Mojácar Playa for a demonstration and if you wish, bring your SKY card and we will show you it working. If you have a holiday home here and bring over your SKY box with your card in it, this will help as from now on you would only need to bring the card for your full programme of channels.

GSF Communications are dealers for HITS mobile and Europa Networks, this enables us to offer full service for your communication needs. With land line and internet access from Europa at less than 50€ per month you will be saving a great deal if you are currently with Movistar. We used to deal with Telitec but have recently changed to Europa Network due to their superior service both in response and speed, for example, two customers recently who ordered a landline were both installed in less than 24 hours - I think you’ll agree that is usually impossible in Spain. Our mobile service HITS has been an amazing success story with over 2500 people either switching to the HITS network from their current supplier or just getting a new sim card. HITS have now got data available on their cards, something I know clients have been waiting for. The price of calls with HITS is easily the cheapest in Spain, a ten minute call to a UK landline from your mobile is only 88 cents

Postcard from Blighty … from Phil Naylor Greetings from Blighty! Back here in the UK Spring is sprung & everything nature has to offer is emerging for a stretch after the long cold winter … to be welcomed by the driest March for sixty years and the driest April since records began! The Telegraph is actually suggesting a hosepipe ban might be on the cards reminiscent of the summer of ’76! After a long winter hibernation the warm weather certainly made this Brimstone butterfly’s (Gonepteryx rhamni) day as it takes a welcome sip of nectar from this classic English spring bloom the Bluebell (Hyacinthoides non-scripta) It’s thought that the word “butterfly” has its roots in “buttercoloured fly” because of the yellow of the male Brimstone butterfly! This is one of only a few species that hibernates as an adult.

Mojacar population. While Mojacar may be a small coastal town of approximately 10,000 people, the significance of an expat political leader winning a seat in Spanish government should not be underestimated. Ms Simpson's success reflects the call for change ringing out across Spain, brought on by a rotten economy and exemplified by the widespread pre-election protests and the drubbing of the socialist party, PSOE, that has governed many Spanish regions since the fall of Franco. Similarly, the problems that Ms Simspon faces in Mojacar, namely huge debt, a disaffected youth and the swaying influence of a few powerful families, mirror the problems affecting the country as a whole. "So much development has happened over the last 20 years it is unbelievable. The town hall made an absolute fortune, yet it is about

Memphis in May 2011

The Mississippi River widened to 3 miles (4.8km) six Kenny’s original pitch times its normal width. The volume of water passing by in one second was enough to fill a large stadium. It was due to peak on 10th May the day we arrived in Memphis and 2 days before the World Famous BBQ Competition. Water lapped over Riverside Drive and onto Beale Street and Mud Island was submerged. Fortunately 10 days before it was decided to move the BBQ Competition from Tom Lee Park on the Riverside to Tiger Lane Mid-South Fairgrounds and the slogan “Memphis is Cooking Come Hell or High Water” was created. We have recently returned from this competition, “The Super Bowl of Swine” world championship BBQ Contest, which started 34 years ago to celebrate Memphis BBQ allegedly the undisputed BBQ capital of the world. We went to support Kenny Bishop of Cowboy Cocina. It was his fifth year there and although he didn’t actually compete this year he is still very much part of the Parrothead Porkers a local team who made us extremely welcome in their area. Memphis in May is not just one festival but many different events, weekends and happenings throughout the month mainly centred on food and music. Every year this festival celebrates the culture, customs, cuisine and commerce of a particular country and in 2011 this country was Belgium. The BBQ Competition takes place over 3 days, 12th – 14th May this year with 282 teams competing for over $110,000 in prizes. Teams decorate their Too much pork!! areas (Cooking Caravans) appropriately, usually with items connected to their team names, tee shirts from previous years and trophies Shoulder of pork won. There are some clever and inventive names many using plays on words. Examples are Porkosaurus, Pork Fiction, Oinkin on the River, The Bastey Boys and Fatback Collective, to name but a few. There is a Miss Piggy idol competition where men dress in tutus and snouts, also Best tee shirt and Best decorated booth. The cooking competitions include Hog Roast, Shoulder of Pork, Pork Ribs, Anything but Pork which includes Beef, Poultry, Seafood and Exotic plus Coleslaw, Hot Wings and sauces. The 2011 Grand Champion was Big Boy Gibson Bar-B-Q and I really must congratulate Sweet Swine O’mine who came 8th in the shoulder category, another local team who are friends with the Parrothead Porkers and welcomed us into their area largely due, not to our personalities or accents, but to the extremely bright hand made shoes with chillies on the toes, made locally by Beth, that Chilli Dave was wearing. They certainly attracted lots of good comments and attention and drinks too!! We were able to act as judges by visiting the People’s Choice Contest where, having been given some tuition on judging, you taste 5 samples of pulled pork and vote for your favourite one. You can sample as many times as you like as long as you pay $5 a time. Cooker Caravan Tours take visitors on a tour of some of the teams and you hear first hand about how the team started, about their rubs and sauces, the smokers they use and the process of cooking championship BBQ. We had BBQ unlike any we had tasted before except maybe Kenny’s pulled pork at his Cowboy Cocina. The quality of the meat, the preparation time, the individual rubs used, the time the meat was smoked and the wood used in the smokers plus the friendship of the people we met all added to a wonderful experience not to be missed. Memphis is an interesting city to visit with interesting museums, the famous Peabody Ducks, Gracelands and of course not to be missed Beale Street the home of the Blues where you can taste Southern food whilst listening to some good live music. Thanks Kenny for telling us all about it and encouraging us to go. Unusual smoker Val Carrington

BEAUTIFUL EYES by the beauty spot

The beauty industry offers so much now, sometimes it’s hard to keep track, so we are here to help explain a few treatments available for the eyes: lasting eye treatments that help to emphasize the eyes and offer a natural look with the added bonus of no mascara and curlers!

Eyelash extensions - The most popular treatment in the beauty industry at this moment! They are fun and flattering and best of all: no mascara! There are many different ways to do this, here are the main ones: Strip lashes - These have been around for years but they are more advanced and much easy to wear now. Follow the application instructions on the box, although professionals apply them slightly differently. A small amount of glue which is supplied with your false lashes is applied, some are pre-glued. Place on top of your natural lash as close as possible to the lid but not touching the skin, hold in place for 30 seconds and you have fabulous lashes.

Hollywood lashes - each individual false lash is attached to your own lashes with a small amount of glue. This is a lengthy process and can

The Psychic Arts by Diana Dudás m.f.h.t. m.i.c.h.t.

I thank my lucky stars for the five years I spent in Vera, as it was during that time that I had the good fortune to meet so many spiritually gifted beings. I was able to develop my own spirituality through workshops, spiritual development groups and through meeting beautiful people that were far more developed or gifted than myself. I was also introduced to books on the subject of psychic development which fed my hunger for knowledge. There were many parts of being psychic or spiritual that I was confused about, I know for myself I thought because I couldn't see spirits (apart from the ones that come in a bottle) that I wasn't psychic. However since selling my business and moving to a home that is more conducive to this kind of work, due to its peace and tranquillity I feel that I am more connected to the spiritual world. There are various types of psychic ability, Clairvoyant, which is where spirit can be seen, Clairaudient, which is where spirit can be heard and Clairsentience, which is when you can sense that someone is around you. I know for myself when my long lost grandma is around because I can always smell her perfume. My dad who passed away over twelve years ago often pays me a visit and I cannot only feel his presence but I can smell his cigarettes. I remember one night last summer I had some friends over and a few stragglers who I had never met before tagged along. At some point during the evening Alex, one of the ladies that I had just met said "there is a man around you." "I know,” I said, “It will be my Dad." The next morning on walking into the kitchen I was met by a strong smell of cigarettes. None of my visitors the previous evening smoked and besides I could recognize his "Senior Service", a distinct smell that I hated as a kid but now find quite comforting. It was during a workshop last year that we as a group were invited to try and see auras, which is an electromagnetic energy field that every living thing radiates. If you want to learn more about this I suggest reading or watching the film "Celestine Prophecies" by James Redfield which explains more about auras and energies. Seeing auras is practice for most of us; others have a natural gift to PAGE 18

take around one and a half hours, but the result is well worth it, longer fuller lashes that last as long as your natural lashes.

Flare lashes - These are similar to individual Hollywood lashes except each one has approx three to five hairs instead of one. They are attached in the same way as Hollywood lashes, albeit the application time is shorter, approximately 20 minutes. It’s a quicker, cheaper option with outstanding results. Eyebrow Shaping - This is achieved either by shaping with tweezers, waxing or threading, the latter two last the longest, up to six weeks! Your therapist will discuss with you the shape that best suits you and the method you prefer.

Eyebrow/lash tinting - Both of these treatments require a patch test 24 hours prior to the treatment being carried out. For the eyebrows, protection is applied to the skin to provide a barrier which prevents the skin becoming dyed too; the colour is then applied, once the colour has taken, the excess is then removed from the brow. For eye lashes, the process is similar with eyes remaining closed throughout the procedure. This is a great treatment for holidays as there's no mascara wand or eyebrow pencil in sight. The treatment will last between 4-6 weeks.

be able to see auras. I was lucky enough to be at a Mind, Body & Soul show a few years ago and able to have a picture taken of my aura. You sit in a chair and place both hands on an electromagnetic plate and then the camera captures your HEF - human energy field. This is based on bio feedback technology. Each colour band depicts different vibrational frequency of that person. For example, Violet colour would show immense progress in the spiritual field, intuitive abilities and connection with the divine, whereas Red would show more interest in power, money, physical well-being, etc. Psychic Development The best way to develop and heighten your spiritual energy is to spend time with nature and to meditate which will allow you to raise your frequency and bring information from the higher spiritual beings. You are lucky enough to have in your area a number of spiritual development groups and workshops and even a book club that meets regularly to discuss new age books. A great place to find such books is at www.cygnus-books.co.uk Everything I have learnt these last few years has been inspiring and has led me on to the next chapter of my spiritual path. If you want to find out more about where you can develop your spiritual side right here on your doorstep, please feel free to email me at reflexinspain@hotmail.com

As you get older, your secrets are safe with your friends because they can’t remember them either.

Alternative Medicine “Your health - my passion” by Diana Dudas m.f.h.t. m.i.c.h.t.

“Fishy Business” It was a stroll around our local fish market that inspired this article. Although allergic to shellfish I am now able to enjoy a variety of white fish such as sole, hake, cod and plaice. I love fish and what a healthy food stuff it is. I understand the importance of fish and the benefits of the omega-3 essential fatty acids that are contained within. Having reached menopause and also coming from a family wrought with heart disease I am all the more observant of what I should and should not eat to stay healthy. Anyone lacking in these essential fatty acids are more prone to heart disease, some cancers, arthritis, psoriasis and eczema. Mental health and memory loss can also be affected. Balanced diet: Eating a balanced diet will help you improve your health, but if you have an allergy to fish don’t worry there is still hope. Essential fatty acids are not only found in cold-water fish such as salmon, mackerel, halibut and sardines. They are also found in flaxseeds, soybeans (sojas), pumpkin seeds (semillas de la calabaza or pippas) , walnuts (nueces) or any oil coming from a seed or nut such as sunflower (girasol), sesame or peanut (cacahuete ) oil. Sun protector: I am sure that you all use a good sun protector when exposing yourselves to the harsh UV rays, however getting sufficient omega-3 can decrease your sensitivity to UV rays and it is also believed that omega-3 fatty acids can also improve the appearance of your skin and help with disorders such as acne, psoriasis and eczema.

Forget health food. I’m at an age where I need all the preservatives I can get.

Hormones abound: As you know hormones play an important role in our mood and frame of mind, especially during menstruation and menopause. A diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids will have a direct influence on the levels of serotonin in our brain. Serotonin affects our mood and lacking in it will cause depression, tiredness and lethargy. Weight loss: Omega-3 plays an important role in weight loss as it is linked to your insulin levels. If your body is producing too much insulin to cope with high sugar foods and carbohydrates, it is more likely that the excess will be stored as fat. Eating omega-3 fatty acids or taking a supplement will allow your insulin levels to drop and fat can then be used for energy. A recent study took two groups of people who were fed exactly the same diet. One group was given fat in the form of sunflower, olive and peanut oils; whilst the others were given omega-3 fish supplements in the form of eight capsules per day. Those that were supplementing fish oil burned approximately 26% more fat per kilo per minute. Insulin levels were also decreased and the number of fat calories burnt in a single day increased. Therefore a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids will improve your mood, heart, mobility, skin and weight. Can’t be bad! If you have any questions on how to improve your health or wellbeing whether it be physical or emotional, please email me at reflexinspain@hotmail.com PAGE 19

www.advertisermojacar.com Basques and frilly knickers were moving to raunchy rhythms on Saturday 21st May at The New Kimrick, Mojácar. A charity Burlesque show, organised by Jackie Miles-Kirby, was performed in aid of PAWS and MACS. The Burlesque dancers were able to strut their wares after only two days of workshops taught by Trixie O'Neil, a professional artiste from the UK. Burlesque deals with the parody in life using striptease to tantalise and exaggerate the profound occurrences we find ourselves in. The dancers explored stories ranging from a game of golf, relaxing on the beach, a game of poker, fighting and flirting over one man and the utter arrogance of affluent and trampish behaviour in Filthy Posh’s performance of "The Lady is a Tramp." Aunty Eileen cleaned the tables, dusted, and chatted up the men in her rubber gloves. Then after too many swigs from her flask, became bold enough to get on the stage and transform into a beautiful showgirl. Trixie’s real life experience of being strip searched at the airport and the saucy contents of her retro case being examined was retold in dance. A dog collar, a whip, rubber gloves, frilly underwear... Burlesque goes back to the ancient art used by Shakespeare and Chaucer of using humour to highlight and ridicule the everyday occurrences of life. The "reveal" is more about human vulnerability. This was a family show and the girls ended up wearing more than one would on the beach. The dance style indulges in overacted mime to deliver a story and translates through gesture and facial expression. It can be understood worldwide and it's heaps of fun !!! Jackie Miles Kirby

CHARITY PUB HUNT Trace and Sheryl - friends of 25 years - organised their 2nd charity Pub Hunt in Mojácar (their 10th in total - having organised them in the UK for their place of work) to raise funds for The Royal British Legion, Mojácar Branch, for whom Trace is a welfare officer. Teams of 4 or 6 are sent off to walk a limited stretch of the paseo to look for clues in the bars en route, answer quiz questions and collect various items - including a bra! Some went home for theirs, some took theirs off, some ... Janet! ... approached Betty Swollocks for her enormous undergarment! The winners, Mark Whitfield, Paula Cooper, Sandra Sayer, Pat Sayer, Susan Judge and John Mason, won a 50€ cash prize which they immediately donated back to The Royal British Legion making the grand total, including a donation from Badger’s, 125€. A great night was had by all. Look out for the next one (maybe October) when another charity will benefit from lots of people having lots of fun. Rita Sneddon, RBL Mojacar Branch Chairperson sent her sincerest gratitude and thanks to all who took part for the donation. Last year, as a Branch, they were able to contribute 12,383€ to the Poppy Appeal, a good result in the present economic climate.

Good weather, a fabulous location and generous visitors made the Dames’ charity fund raising day a great success. Held at the home of Rosy and Ken Wildsmith in Vera, the Dames of Spain organised a Garden Party in aid of Alzheimer's Research Trust. It was very well supported, those attending enjoyed lunch after a Paella cooking demonstration, together with fine food from the kitchens. The many stalls and garden games provided opportunity for the visitors to support the day's charity and then they were able to relax on the terraces to further enjoy a drink and the freshly prepared cakes and desserts. The event raised an amazing total of 1,500€.

Spanish appeal court has dismissed a case brought by British expats against a government minister accused of defamation. The appeal was brought before the Superior Court of Justice after expats took offence at comments made by the Andalucian government's public works and planning minister Josefina Cruz. During a parliamentary debate in March, when asked how she planned to deal with the problem of illegal housing affecting thousands of British expats in the Almanzora Valley, Almeria, she referred to the situation as: "an intrusion of people... who are not of this country, who have settled here illegally and have shown a lack of respect for the culture of the territory, for the culture of the landscape and the culture of planning... and are now demanding that we solve a problem that they are responsible for having created." Her comments were later ratified in the expat British newspaper Costa Almeria News when she said: "My comments mean exactly what they say: foreigners who have built illegal houses in Andalucia have shown no respect for us.” "I find it incredible that one seeks to defend people who have committed illegal acts." The Superior Court upheld the earlier decision of the Supreme Court and ruled that Josefina Cruz had not denigrated a group of people for being British, which would have been a crime, but had instead criticised people who had knowingly bought illegal houses. Telegraph Expat is launching a campaign in support of the hundreds of thousands of British and other expats who have fallen victim to urban corruption and the confused state of property law in Spain. If you have been affected by the problem, please add a pin documenting your story to the Expat Directory (telegraph.co.uk/expatdirectory) under the pin category 'Illegal Spanish Property'. Over time, this will generate an interactive map which will document and expose the full extent of the problem. According to an announcement made by the office of Spain's visiting development minister, José Blanco, the Spanish Homes Roadshow "will highlight the strengths of our economy, transparency and legal certainty of our planning legislation." It is estimated that there are up to one million "illegal" properties in Spain - largely owned by Britons who bought property here in good

On 9th May Albox Branch of the Royal British Legion went on another of their famous trips, this time to the beautiful city of Cordoba. The trip was arranged by Barbara Klughardt and shepherded by Sandra Evans and Ann Wells. Sharing a full coach with the Friends of Almanzora, they all enjoyed a prize quiz en route which kept everyone guessing. Many of the numerous sights were visited during their 3 day stay including the spectacular Plaza Tendillas (pictured left) with its impressive statue of an armoured man on horseback with a very unusual white head and face - even more spectacular when seen at night with all the lights on it and the surrounding fountains. All enjoyed the numerous street cafés and bars and slept soundly after good evenings with good company and although exhausted from their walking tours, enjoyed their trip without exception. faith only to fall victim to uncertain planning regulations and unscrupulous developers and officials. The roadshow reflects growing alarm in Spain at the huge stock of newly-built homes - 400,000 of which are near the coast - that have remained vacant since the country’s economic crisis began. Prices have fallen by up to 40 per cent as banks and developers desperately try to claw back their investments. The UK is the first international destination for the roadshow because, according to the latest data, its citizens and investors in 2009 accounted for 31.5 per cent of foreign buyers of property in Spain. On Saturday 18th June Sunseed and the Agave Eco School are organizing an Open Day at Los Molinos de Rio Aguas, near Sorbas to show their projects to visitors. It will be a fun day filled with various events, activities and tours for adults and children alike. The activities, most of which are free, will start at 10am and will run throughout the day until late. There will be regular guided tours of the project, an Ethiopian coffee ceremony, a fun game about sustainability, movies, a market of local, ecological and handmade products, finishing with an Open Music Jam Session in the evening. Albox British Legion’s first Treasure Hunt a huge success Sunday 15th May dawned and the sun should have been shining as the intrepid treasure hunters set off to find the clues, instead the weather was overcast and en route the rain came down but this did not dampen the happy hunter’s spirits. Duncan Burr, John Cooper and their wives put the icing on the cake by turning up in a classic Riley. Unfortunately there was only 1 wiper working on the car so they had a job to see when the rain did come down. The organisers, Kay and Rod Lock, Sandy Tucker and Bob Cowan had great fun organising the event. The first route they tried was a bit too hair-raising in places for people who do not like heights, so they had to find another way which was less scary. The route took them through some beautiful countryside and villages and the treasure hunters visited places they hadn't been to before. After finding as many clues as they could and collecting items along the way the hunt finished at Bar Trinidad who laid on a magnificent feast of a barbecue, with jumbo sausages, burgers, cheeseburgers, pork, sardines, jacket potatoes, coleslaw, salad etc. Unfortunately due to the weather, the hunters had to gather inside to eat, but the chef cooked the delicious barbie outside in the rain under the cover of a sun umbrella! A big 2nd prize, a bottle of Cava and 6 bottles of thank you goes to Bar Trinidad for making red wine, won by Duncan Burrs’ party them so welcome and laying on so much food. After the barbie Derek entertained everyone with live music to dance the night away. A lot of the treasure hunters made their weary way home about 9pm, but for those remaining, the music moved to the bar where they continued to enjoy the evening. The event was well attended with 49 people.

1st prize, a bottle of Cava & 6 bottles of Rioja, won by David and Jean Rhams’ party

Pet Stop

ALWAYS FINISH THE COURSE OF TREATMENT A survey suggests that a common cause of failure of a prescribed treatment is because the owner has difficulty carrying out the dosing instructions. It is quite understandable because some pets are so uncooperative when owners try to force them to take medicines. When medicines are developed, treatments and doses are carefully investigated, therefore, it is absolutely necessary to complete the course of treatment prescribed. In the case of antibiotics, many of which need to be given regularly over a period of several days, and in equal intervals during a 24 hour period, so 3 times daily means once every 8 hours, likewise 2 times daily is every 12 hours. This maintains optimum levels of the

drug through the course of treatment. Failure to do this may mean the infection is not fully cleared up and at worst, may encourage bacteria to become resistant to that antibiotic, so if that particular family of antibiotic is prescribed for that pet in the future it could be ineffective. Ask the vet to show you how to give the treatment, if you simply cannot administer normal tablets then ask the vet for alternative methods of dosing such as palatable tablets. You could try using a powdered form or crush the tablet and put it in the food, use this method only if the pet eats well without sniffing things out, otherwise both medicine and food will be wasted. PLEASE NOTE - some tablets are meant to be swallowed whole so breaking or crushing is not an option, ask the vet if this is a possibility. Some tablets taste horrible and have a coating to mask this, on others, the coating may be intended to survive passage through the stomach, protecting the drug in the tablet from degrading in the stomach acid. As a rule, assume that an unscored tablet is not suitable for

For Holiday & Twin Unit Park Homes

www.cherribar.com dividing or crushing. Maybe the drug is available in liquid form, this can then be given via a syringe and there are spot on treatments for parasites and worms. Try putting the tablet in your pets favourite titbit, there are some treats sold in packets specifically for this very job, also available to buy are gadgets if the treats don't fool anyone. It may be easier to stand a smallish dog on a table, a large towel or blanket can restrain a small, struggling dog. Enlist help from family or friends, 2 people may be the answer, always have the treatment ready before you approach the animal. In the case of cats the large towel or blanket can protect you against sharp claws. If you find that you simply

cannot give the tablets then go back to the vet and seek further advice. There is always the option to give the drug by injection.

The library is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, 11am – 1pm, in the Multiusos building next to the Tercero Edad café. Membership is 10€ each year for those over 60 and 12€ for others; this is a family or household membership fee. The Red Queen by Philippa Gregory Following on from the White Queen, we now have the story of Margaret Beaufort, heiress to the red rose of Lancaster. Devoted to her belief that her House is the true ruler of England, Margaret does all she can to support her son, the future Henry VII. Blue Eyed Boy by Joanne Harris By following the lives of three brothers and their dysfunctional families, this chilling psychological thriller, by the author of Chocolat, tells the story of BB through posts on a web journal called badguyrocks. Jeremy and Amy by Jeremy Keeling Jeremy Keeling, the animal director and co-founder of Monkey World in Dorset, adopted Amy as an abandoned baby orang-utan. They were involved in a car crash and Amy saved Keeling’s life. This is their story and that of the battle to establish Monkey World. The Mayan Prophecy by Steve Alten The ancient Mayan calendar has said the world will end on 21st December 2012. The son of the scholar and archaeologist Julius Gabriel and his friend, the part Mayan psychiatrist must convince the world that it’s in danger. The salvation lies in a millennia – old code. The Alice behind Wonderland by Simon Winchester In 1858 Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) took a photo of Alice Liddell as the Beggar Maid. Simon Winchester uses Dodgson’s published writings, private diaries and photographs to show the development of the shy mathematician into Lewis Carroll. The Silent Sea by Clive Cussler Juan Cabrillo and the Oregon team have been sent to locate the remains of a crashed NASA satellite in the Argentine jungle but what they find sends them to a small Pacific island. Four brothers had investigated a treasure pit there in 1941 but sudden death and the coming war allowed the secrets to lie forgotten till the team arrives. Mist over Pendle by Robert Neill Are the mysterious deaths in the forests of Pendle caused by witchcraft? Squire Robert Nowell investigates but dismisses the claim as ridiculous. However further events seem to show that the horrifying whispers may be true – a coven is at work! The Odd Job Woman by Struan Robertson This book was a gift to the library and since it is set in the Mojácar area and is written by a onetime resident we thought you might be interested. An English odd-job man answers a call to an isolated villa to open a locked dead box but finds that he has opened a deadly can of worms. A whodunit and thriller set against the backdrop of the British expat society.

AKAYLA - New to the shelter Akayla appears to be a gentle dog with a quiet energy level. She has a lovely presence and is very good looking. She gets along well with the 3 dogs (possible offspring) that she was abandoned with.

VASKO - is one of the shelter favourites. Though he is an adolescent, he possesses a quiet nature. He is playful, but not overly so, highly sociable and very friendly towards people and dogs. Vasco has a lovely character and he is easy to manage. Likes to play in water!

JESS - is a friendly dog with people and other dogs. She is active and enjoys walking, running and playing. She is toy motivated.

Lulabell is a 5 year old female, playful and happy. She is very easy going, affectionate and mixes Mia is 3 years old, clean, obedient happily with everyone. and loving. Mia is very sociable and placid and would make a lovely pet. Rusty is a small dog with a huge character, he loves human affection and responds well to attention. He mixes well and is good with children. Could you give this bundle of fun a good home?

APSA has many dogs of all sizes and ages just waiting for good homes. If you can help please ring 663 762 642 or contact us through our website: www.apsa.org.es

PUPPY RESCUE in SPAIN ASTRA - is a lovely dog who, typical of her German shepherd heritage, is very focused on humans. She adores your attention and likes you to play with her. She is group housed and causes no trouble with the other dogs in her living or play groups. She has guarding tendencies and may bark if she sees people outside in the shelter perimeter and it has been noted that she may make a strong one-to-one attachment to her owner; again, behaviour’s typical of her breeding. A very nice dog and would make a good companion.

CANDY - approx. D.O.B: June 2010. Pretty Candy, along with her 3 siblings (three females, one male) came into PAWS' care as kittens. The people who were feeding them feared for their lives when neighbours threatened to poison the cats. They are all totally endearing characters, who love to pose. They are spayed/neutered and fully upto-date with their vaccinations. Each of them would make wonderful companions for anyone wanting an amusing and loveable cat. If you would like any further information on Candy or her siblings, please call Diane 950 617 643 or Ruth 637 817 982

www.advertisermojacar.com A charity event organised by Sean Grew was held at Restaurant La Parata to raise funds for children with Downs Syndrome at Asprodalba. The afternoon involved live music from the likes of Sean Grew himself, Ellen & Jim – Arriba, Arriba, Graham Steele, Ashley, Shaun Peters, Robin, Bish, DJ Ian, to name but a few. Proprietor Shea, served a special Menu del Día for 14€, of which 5€ went to the charity. Donations were asked for on entry and raffle prizes were on offer to raise more funds. Prior to the event Shea acquired a fair few sponsors … to have his moustache shaved off which, was duly done on the day along with his hair! The tash off raised 545€ and the hair off, 170€. Irish Rover Dave also fell victim to the clippers for the cause! A total of 1,745€ was raised altogether of which, 965€ is to go to Vera Orphanage and 780€ to Asprodalba. And a fantastic time was had by all.

Aron Ralston (James Franco) has a passion for all things outdoors, but when a falling boulder traps him in a remote Utah canyon, a thrillseeker’s adventure becomes the challenge of a lifetime. Over the next five days, Ralston embarks on a remarkable personal journey in which he relies on the memories of family and friends- as well as his own courage and ingenuity - to turn adversity into triumph! This is a very powerful story, and in some cases quite graphic, told in a way only Danny Boyle could deliver.

JUNE

By The Other Half

Birth Flower: The June Birth Flower is

the Rose. The name "Rose" is derived from the Latin Rosa, an Etruscan form of Greek Rhodia meaning Rhodian, originating from Rhodes. Meaning: Passion, love and beauty Hidden message: favoured during the Victorian era varied according to colour: Red-I Love You, White - I am worthy of you, Orange - You are my secret love, White - You are Heavenly, Yellow - I am not worthy of your love, White & Red - We are inseparable, Pink - Please Believe Me

Birthstone: The Pearl. Pearls come in a

wide variety of natural colours - white, pink, lilac, cream, grey, gold, green, blue or black. The word Pearl is derived from the Latin word "pirum" which means "pear". Real pearls are made by oysters or other molluscs. Cultured pearls are made by molluscs but with human intervention (an irritant introduced into their shells causes a pearl to grow). A good sized pearl can take between five to eight years to form, which is usually the entire life of the oyster or mollusc. Kokichi Mikimoto was the Japanese man credited as the creator of the cultured pearl. Pearls were once considered unfortunate for those in love and if worn by the married signified "torrents of tears"! The properties with which the Pearl is associated are: Loyalty, faithfulness, friendship, modesty, chastity and purity. The Pearl is also used to enhance personal integrity. Its healing properties are reputed to be effective for health problems relating to the heart, spleen, stomach, intestine & ulcer problems.

General Trivia Answers

I remember that when I was a child some grown-up told me that as you get older, the years go by faster. That was clearly tripe, and even my immature brain could work out that if this were the case, then Christmas would arrive at different times for different age groups – for instance, those really ancient people, like the grandparents, would celebrate Christmas probably about June, while old people, like the parents, would probably be able to hang it out until October, leaving us poor kids, who have the greatest need for Christmas, to wait until nearly the end of December. With the wisdom of age, I understand what this clever-clogs grown-up was babbling on about. However, I don’t think that he/she had thought the whole thing through sufficiently. I feel that the concept of staggering Christmas is sound, it simply needs to have a little bit of organised thinking applied to it. It is an interesting idea, and I propounded it to the Higher Authority. I thought it might be helpful, as I know that from the beginning of November onwards she is on Christmas overdrive. I pointed out that she would have to do much less work, as the cards could be sent out in batches, according to the age of the recipients, and likewise the presents could be bought, wrapped and despatched piecemeal. She could take her time, go at it gently, she would have at least six months within which to get Christmas done and dusted. She could start in June, with those of our friends who are even older than we are. Then maybe in July she could deal with our own age group. September would be for those of forty or thereabouts, October could be put aside for the twenty-somethings, and finally December for the youngsters. Maybe I didn’t pick the most opportune moment to suggest a scheme for rescheduling Christmas –she was reading. She put her book down and fixed me with a stare that a basilisk would have been proud of. ‘Oh yes’ she countered. ‘And I’m supposed to cook how many Christmas dinners?’ I blanched. I hadn’t thought of that. ‘And you are going to put the decorations up in June?’ Oh Lord, what have I done? Maybe, on reflection it wasn’t such a good idea! PAGE 35

‘London Bill’ says a few bonito are being caught from the shore and so are dentex bream being landed from the Villaricos area. This was confirmed by ‘Brian Cuba’ who photographed a small Villaricos boat landing both these species and others in good numbers. ‘Captain Pugwash Pete’ is away in the UK so no news from him. ‘Cuba Brian’ took mates, ‘Farmer Rory’ and ‘Paul the Pirate’ out on his Garrucha moored fishing boat. It was a poor day’s fishing with only combers and pandoras being caught. Brian was out again the next day with Craig and his girlfriend and friend Ian, all from Aguilas. ‘Farmer Rory’ was Brian’s first mate on the trip. Craig caught a nice triggerfish which although wonderful to eat was put back for another day. Lots of small pandoras were caught, many as small as 2 inches long. And lots of combers, most were full of eggs and it’s a shame the majority wouldn’t go back, even when their swim bladders were pricked. Rory caught a hake for his lunch, or did the cat get it?

‘Girl Friday’ is thinking about a date for the trips to Granada to organise the next batch of Andalucian coarse fishing licenses (Without you having to do the 24 hour course in Spanish). Documents required are a copy each of your passport and NIE document and an in date original English rod license. ‘Baza Barry’ fished Lake Negratin and caught a lot of small carp but none weighed more than a couple of pounds. Water levels are still very high and spawning is under way. He has been doing some recces of the trout rivers and is pleased to report stocks have been added but water is too fast at the moment to fish comfortably. This week’s Rods and Reels competition was held on Murcia’s Eden Canal at Guadamar. After last week’s weights from Argos, it was a bit of a change for this week. The river did not have much pace, and with an upstream wind, kept the float virtually stationary. Big fish are not showing and whether they are still breeding or just getting over this period, only time will tell. Top rods on the day … 1st ... Jim (The Chairman) Rouse fishing the pole using maggot and corn with 20lbs. 2nd ... Lenny (Ex Cultural Attaché) fishing the pole using bread and maggot with 16.3/4lbs. 3rd ... Terry (Swing Em) Screen fishing the pole using maggot with 15lbs. This week Abbey Angling match was held at Murcia’s Lake Argos and considering we are now in the

middle to end of May the weather continues to be quite cool with this blustery wind all the time. Along with the excess rain that we have been having the water level on Argos is higher now than in the nine years I have lived in Spain. The water has also coloured up which should induce the fish to feed but weights are still poor. On the 18th May 2007 which is 4 years ago I caught 176lbs of fish on Argos, which I believe is still the best match weight caught there. A few of the fisherman in those days would regularly produce 65lbs, and one or two managing 100lbs and now we are lucky to break 65lbs in a match. This week’s results are … 1st ... Pete (The Peg) Hampshire with 36.1/2lbs on the feeder using corn. 2nd ... Lenny (Ex Cultural Attaché) Bolton with 36lbs on feeder using corn. 3rd ... Alan (The Emperor) Roscoe with 35.3/4lbs on feeder using corn. The next Anglers Together meeting (sea and coarse) is on Saturday 11th June at 12 o’clock, the meeting will be held at The New Royal Bar and Restaurant at El Alamillo, opposite the sea-front between Isla Plana and the Port. The subs are now due at these meetings €5 for renewal and €10 for new members. Refreshments and lunch are available. Come along to a meeting nearest to you. For further details ring Alan Roscoe on 968 570 876 or email: anglerstogether@gonuts4free.com Checkout Mojacar’s weather and sea conditions on the Beachcomber’s webcam. www.almeriafreeads.com/webcam You must first download the latest version from www.java.com to see it.
