Casa Benedict Holiday Rentals & Long Lets

A warm welcome awaits you at Casa Benedict a semi rural retreat with panoramic views to the Cabrera mountains, set in 3½ acres planted with olive trees and fruit trees, situated close to the Spanish village of Turre but only a five minute drive to the beaches of Mojacar and Garrucha. The property consists of two identical Villas Casa Helena and Casa Alicia both with two double bedrooms along with a two bedroomed garden apartment and a large one bedroomed garden apartment, making this ideal for a group of friends or family to share but still retaining their own independence. All of this set in spacious well appointed gardens with a swimming pool that has the added benefit of an attached c hildren’s pool. Set around the pool are both gas and charcoal barbecue’s and a stone dining table. The property is fully secured to ensure the safety of our guests and access is via remote controlled gate for which every guest has their own remote. All of the accommodation is well appointed with all the comforts of home to include a fully equipped kitchen, s atellite

TV and free wi-fi access for those that can’t be parted from Facebook or Twitter. Well behaved dogs are always welcome to spend their vacation time along with their owners. For those chilly nights out of season Casa Alicia has the added benefit of a cosy log burner installed. Your hosts Ian and Jan live on site to e nsure you have a trouble free stay and have been an invaluable source of information to some of their previous guests. They have owned Casa Benedict for nine years and every year try to improve the property. This winter’s project was to enlarge the terrace areas around the pool, include a large area with shade and create a specific dining area by the barbecues. As the last few years

has seen an increase in French guests they have also created an area where boules or pétanque can be safely played. Registered and inspected regularly by the Spanish tourist board for the last nine years, you can be assured of a trouble free and peaceful vacation at Casa Benedict. For further information contact Ian on 616 189 002 or visit their comprehensive web site www.villa-turre.com or Facebook/Casa Benedict.

Sea View Inconsequential Quickies, Coastal Chit-Chat and a Review of the News.

♣First and foremost the latest news

on the Noise Ordinance. On the 13th May opposition party Mojacar Positiva Se Mueve lodged an allegation against it claiming this "Ordinance of Silence", as it is referred to socially, to be illegal, unenforceable and beyond mere municipal powers from a legal point of view. That, and I quote … “-It is contrary to the constitutional principles of legality, by banning activities that are legal according to superior laws. -It does not specify when noise, music or other activities go from being permitted to becoming an offense, leaving it up to the discretion of the local police officers to decide if the noise is too loud, or not. -There are no maximum decibel limits even though the Junta provides them. -It also permits licenses for terraces to be granted at the discretion of the Mayor, without being subject to any legal criteria.” As Mojacar Positiva Se Mueve have pointed out, a noise ordinance should include the word decibels repeatedly, but this ordinance leaves all up to the judgment and discretion of the noise sensitivity and perception of local police officers, without the need to measure noise levels to proceed to fine, seize objects and even order the immediate closure of a business. Imagine if the Guardia Civil Trafico could issue speeding fines without a speedometer, or fine someone for driving under the influence of alcohol without a breathalyzer. And it is right what they say, you cannot punish without having a basis of judgment, much less without the citizen’s or entrepreneur’s knowledge of those limits. According to the Mayor, this bylaw will be used with common sense, but MSM said that they think common sense should have been applied when drafting the Ordinance! It is a known fact that some of the contents have made the Lady Mayor an international laughing stock. Furthermore, MSM claim the ordinance to be incomplete as it does not regulate noise emissions from motor vehicles, heavy vehicles, motorcycles, dumper trucks, etc ... Also no mention at all about vibrations caused by heavy machinery or loud music. It has been deemed totally ridiculous to ban consuming a drink standing on a

PAGE 4

terrace, and is not legally viable, as a municipality cannot make up new laws! Also the prohibition to have visitors in your home after 12 midnight, even if no noise is generated, all though according to the mayor, it has all been taken out of context and that they will never denounce anyone for that, so....why the need to contain these prohibitions in the ordinance? With this allegation and those already presented it is hoped there are sufficient reasons and enough legal weight to dismiss the adoption of this ordinance though it seems it is already being implemented as some establishments have already been ‘visited’ and penalised! And the town hall recently turned down an application to hold a Midsummer charity night market on the playa on 21st June in aid of AECC. CONNEXIONS in Turre would like to announce some great new offers to help you save money on your mobile phone calls. HITS mobile have introduced a selection of monthly Talk, Surf, or Talk & Surf plans and packages, for national and international calls to mobiles and landlines, with NO connection charges and up to 200 minutes FREE. If you have lost some of your UK TV channels and are looking to switch over, Connexions have an Android Box on display. And as well as all your computer needs, they can also offer great prices on all the leading makes and models of LCD TVs. Their shop in the main Square is open every day except Sunday, or call 950 479 502. Fancy being famous? Following the PAWS live music quiz at the Beachcomber on 14th June, J&J Music will be launching their new song ‘I Love Mojacar’ … but that’s not all! To complete the recording the audience is invited to join in for the most important finale to the song – the last line of “Love It!” Jim, who also wrote the song ‘Almeria Shores’, has for some time thought Mojacar should have a song which actually describes the town and the laid-back feel of the place. For a preview you can check out the unfinished version at https:// soundcloud.com/john-beachcomber-mojacar/i-love-mojacar-1. Iron Art at El Real, Antas are pleased to announce that at their next Charity Fayre on Wednesday 26th June, along with their usual stall holders (of which there is a great variety) Distribuciones Macar SL

Donations from stall holders go to MACS, Stepping Stones and Vera Orphanage who they hope will also be in attendance at this next fayre. I can highly recommend a visit to this veritable Aladdin’s cave and there are 4 more containers of stock due in ….! PAWS and Hostal Rural, Turre are joining forces to hold a weekly Country Fair and Rastrillo with live music every Sunday from 14th July. There will be two areas available; one for handicrafts, fresh produce, home made items, etc. and another for "car-booters. It will be open to the public from 10am until 4pm, the bar, BBQ and restaurant from 12 noon. Stall holders will arrive between 8am and 9am and the stalls will cost 5€ - 50% of which will go to the animal charity. To reserve a place call 697 302 129. AquaZumba/AquaFit classes with Alison are now back at Vera Beach Club. Following on from the success of the ‘Pink Fitness Party’ in aid of Breast Cancer, Alison was planning a ‘Boogie in Blue’ to take place on 29th June for prostate cancer. This is now being held in the autumn, cos it’s too hot! So instead there is a “Pool Party” in aid of MACS at The Kimrick with a 1 hour mega class of AquaZumba followed by Buck’s Fizz, courtesy of Ibex Insurance and prizes for the best speedos and best retro bathing cossie. Tickets are 5€, every cent going to MACS. Numbers are limited so please call Alison on 637 465 487. Sunday night summer entertainment has commenced at El Naranjo, Los Gallardos with the carvery now being served in the evening from 7pm until 9pm, instead of at lunchtime. See their advert opposite for who’s on, when. Also on Thursday 20th June dust off your Royal Wedding finery and join them for Royal Ascot Ladies Day, always a popular afternoon with buffet for just 15€. Bumped into Jim from Crash Repairs Auto Refinishing. He now has the equipment for headlamp polishing and his welding gear has been up-dated, serviced and back in full working order.

♣ Opposition

Party Unión Mojaquera Diez posted a press release on facebook. Apparently 200 bikers with their respective companions had to endure a day of absolute silence and were denied access to the old town of Mojacar because a wedding was taking place and the bikes could cause too much noise. And that the Mayoress, “guided by her obsessive mania to control everything that moves” has ordered six surveillance cameras to be strategically distributed across the town and the playa. Unión Mojaquera, “wants to publicly denounce this nonsense,” and resolve to try to prevent the installations using all means that the democratic system allows. Look it up for yourself if you don’t believe me at www.facebook.com/ union.mojaqueradiez Beware of the latest scam … a fellow with an Indian accent has been ringing around the area claiming to be from a computer maintenance company at Windows, or such like. To one ‘victim’ he said that their computer was sending him messages and that he could fix it if they went into a certain internet site. Now this ‘victim’ was smart enough to say they didn’t have a computer and, lo and behold, our Indian gentleman hung up. It seems the money spent on the Turre/Alfaix section of the AVE line has been pretty much wasted. As The Entertainer Online rather amusingly puts it … “The AVE high-speed train that will whoosh through our quiet corner of Almería, stopping now and again at the Vera station to allow an elderly lady in black with her chicken to get off, has been put on the back-burner or worse, as the European Commission has decided that the Almeria-Murcia link is expensive and without much point. At least until 2020, Brussels says it won't put in any cash, and that Spain will have to go it alone on that stretch of line, which it is unlikely to do. The so-called European Corridor will connect Algeciras, via Granada, to Murcia and Cartagena. The port of Almería also loses out in favour of both Algeciras and Cartagena.”

Ideal.es reports that the DGT (La Dirección General de Tráfico) are working towards half of all cars on the road to be under seven years old by 2016 to rid the roads of vehicles that can be a d anger to both their owners and other road users. In the latest figures released more than half of the vehicles in the province-about 334,520-are over nine years old. Through the use of speed radars, they look to control and prohibit the movement of vehicles without an ITV, of which there are currently 33,985 in Almeria. This same mission is also looking to e radicate unscrupulous workshops and dodgy dealers! According to the French weather channel Metèo, there is a 70 percent chance of this summer being cold and wet across Spain, France, Portugal, Germany and Austria. Cold maritime fronts and weak solar activity during the winter months have not only given us a chillier Spanish spring than normal, they’re also going to make the summer months u nusually dreary and rainy. So, June and July are only likely to have short periods of summer heat which will in turn bring heavy storms in A ugust, and September and October are likely to register higher average temperatures and less rain. Though there are fines of up to 6,000€ for failing to comply, any recommendations for improvements are not obligatory. Worthy of note is that only c ertified and registered assessors are able to issue the EPC - architects, t echnical architects and some engineers. The certificate lasts 10 years and cost is estimated at between 200€ and 300€. There are some exceptions; if you are already renting out your property to a tenant then you do not need to have an EPC until you change tenants; structures under 50m2; buildings sold for demolition or new buildings-which should already have one. Some information has been released about the World Asset Declaration - Spaniards and foreigners resident in Spain have declared assets held abroad in the form of bonds, shares, real estate and bank accounts of 87.7 b illion euros, equivalent to nine p ercent of the country’s GDP. In the figures provided 131,411 taxpayers declared assets held overseas, of which 129,925 were individuals and the rest companies. Individuals declared 67.1 billion euros and companies 20.6 billion.

COOL-AIR

Mobile Vehicle Air-Conditioning

KEEPING COOL IN YOUR CAR NEED NOT COST YOU A FORTUNE!

It’s that time of year again when you need to be thinking about a service on your car’s air-con system. Air-conditioning problems tend to be noticed at the start of summer as the weather hots up. In the climate that we live in, the last thing you need is to switch on your air-con and get blasted with warm air. An air-con service by COOL-AIR can prevent this! A lot of people are under the impression that using your a ir-con uses a lot more petrol or diesel, this, in fact, is m inimal. Years ago the compressor on a car was huge and it did affect fuel consumption quite dramatically, now, nearly all c ompressors are Japanese and are very small so barely affect fuel c onsumption at all, actually less than 2%, so the benefits you get from using your air-con far outweigh the minimal cost. Although air-conditioning represents less than 4% of all mechanical failure on a modern car it is the third most e xpensive to repair after the engine and the gearbox. It is advisable to use your air-con for at least 10 minutes a week and get it serviced every 12 to 18 months. Really it is all about p reventative maintenance, if you did not put oil in your car’s engine you would expect it to run dry and seize up. It is just the same with your air-con. The main c omponent is the c ompressor and this needs to be kept lubricated with a s pecial kind of oil that mixes with the refrigerant. If this is not done then your c ompressor WILL seize up. If your air-con is regularly serviced the c ompressor should last the life of the car. The U.K.’s leading warranty repairer Warranty Direct Ltd have released figures to show how expensive compressors can be ... A new compressor on a Vauxhall Astra would cost 704 pounds for the part and 196 pounds for labour ... A Ford Mondeo compressor would cost 489 pounds and 198 pounds to fit ... And all plus re-gas and VAT. Warranty Direct LTD manager Gordon Rose said, “We are t hinking of introducing a waiver in our warranty policies that insists that you have your air-con serviced or your warranty will be void if your compressor needs replacing.” He also said, “We spend tens of thousands of pounds every year replacing compressors that in our opinion would not need replacing had the air-con system been serviced on a yearly basis.” COOL-AIR provide a complete service, including re-gas, diagnostics, repairs and parts all carried out by a fully qualified vehicle air-con engineer. COOL-AIR is a mobile service based in Mojácar and covers all surrounding areas.

Sadly Elaine Kay Brown, President and Founder of MACS, was u nable to be present at the Opening as she is in hospital having further treatment. Elaine did, however, write a speech (the 3rd shop being her baby ‘so to speak’) for her husband David to read out - David, too emotional for words, passed the task over to Tracey Ingman. In the speech Elaine thanked all the sponsors who had helped MACS and the volunteers who had worked so hard to get the shop ready. It was a fairly low-key opening ceremony because the main Inauguration of the premises will hopefully be in September, when the rest of the building is ready for use; this being a Day Centre for p atients, relaxation/quiet room and mobility equipment storage. Helpline: (0034) 634 656 555

General Enquiries: (0034) 634 328 334

Elaine stressed that the mobility equipment, available on free loan to cancer patients, will also be made available to anyone else if they need it, with a donation to MACS being the only criteria - this is available now and all people need to do is ask at the shop or phone the MACS helpline on 634 656 555 or email macscancersupport@ live.co.uk. MACS were extremely grateful to receive three huge cheques on the day, from local Groups, FACE, The Dames in Turre and The Mojacar Masons (see Presentation pictures below). The monies donated will be a massive help to MACS in furnishing the Day Centre and other facilities etc; without Sponsors such as these MACS would not exist and they are truly grateful for their continued fundraising assistance. If you visit Mojacar, or live in Mojacar, then a visit to the MACS shop is a ‘must’ - you won’t be disappointed. E-mail: macscancersupport@live.co.uk photo by Julie Jones Peel

Sue Moretta entertains lunchtime diners at Bar Restaurant La Parata ”The Dames in Spain held their Garden Party at the home of Rosy and Ken Wildsmith in Vera and the rain came down non stop all day. The garden party ended up as a House Party with all the stalls moved inside but what a successful day it was. Some people braved the rain and plucked the ducks from the swimming pool, others were watching Ken and Vic preparing the paella whilst others, having spent up on the stalls, were enjoying the comforts of Gail’s Bar. After lunch Chairman Myra presented cheques of 1000€ each to Mojacar and Vera Red Cross. President Gail presented a gift to Rosy and Ken thanking them for hosting the garden party and for all their hard work in preparing for the day. The Grand Raffle was then drawn with the first prize of a TV, being won by Terry Edwards. A big thank you to all who helped on the day and to all who came along and s upported us.”

www.advertisermojacar.com Let me start this review by pointing out that I am biased - I like the p eople at the Irish Rover. Unfortunately, that makes it a bit harder to write a review as I don’t wish to show any “favouritism”. Dave showed my wife and me to our table and brought us each a glass of their house red, a well rounded Peñascal, to sip while we read through the menu. Since it was evening, the breakfast section was obviously “out”. I have fond memories of dropping in for many a mid-morning poached or scrambled eggs, with bacon, when I was still working. My brother would also sometimes come visiting from Lubrín, and then it was always a “Full English”. I see it’s still available, including a cuppa, for 5.95€ (or 7.95€ if you can handle the extra large one) but I digress! Despite being almost June, the w eather that night was too chilly to consider a salad, although the Rover’s offering of a Prawn and Melon salad (7.95€) was tempting. Eventually my wife chose the Fish Goujons with Tartare sauce and I decided on Chicken Bites with a sweet chilli dip. My chicken bites, which like the goujons were in a light batter, went well with the “in-house” sweet chilli dip. This did not have enough bite to be worrying, but it was definitely chilli. (Silly word that, for something that’s “hot”!) The serving was of a sensible size to form a generous starter. This could not be said of the Cod Goujons! These were very tasty and served on a salad bed but, as you can see from the photo, formed such a generous serving that were you wanting a light meal then this starter, followed by a dessert, would be an ideal choice. Indeed, I would not be surprised to see this dish become o ffered as a choice of “main” or “starter”. Her ladyship informed me that it was superb. Incidentally, the accompanying tartare sauce was not “in-house” and one could easily change it for mayonnaise or tomato sauce if preferred. You don’t have to dislike meat in order to enjoy vegetarian cuisine, and my carnivorous wife thoroughly enjoyed her main course choice of Mushroom, Stilton and Brocolli Pasta Bake at 7.95€. As a further benefit, the house red blended brilliantly well with this dish. I, in the meantime, tucked in to one of the o ptions on the Rover’s new “Curry Corner”. I love s pinach, alias “saag”, so ordered a Chicken Saag (8.95€) Open from 11am. Kitchen closes at 10pm. Karaoke ends 1am. Bar closes 2am.

a ccompanied by Basmati rice (1.50€) and a chapati (1.30€). All curries are available in a range of 5 “heats”. I’m not into curries that “blow your head off ” but I do like a “bite”. I chose m edium strength and was pleased to discover that this was strong enough to have a definite “bite” but in no way had me reaching for coolants. (By the by, here’s a tip. If your curry is too potent, place some butter not marge - on your tongue and swirl it around. It causes the burn to recede by magic!). I do like curries, and the Irish Rover offering was definitely amongst the better ones I have eaten, even those of some dedicated Indian cuisine restaurants. The chapati, lightly buttered, was also a good example of the genre. Well done Asjad and Prince, the two chefs in the Irish Rover. I am sure that Jenna, who served us promptly and cheerfully, must have thought we didn’t like the food, because we finished neither the starter nor the main course. However, the only reason for leaving a nything on our plates was because we are at an age where we can no l onger polish off huge portions - the quality was certainly not in question! For sweets we had chocolate Fudge Cake, with a choice of Ice cream or cream and a Wicked Waffle, which comprises a sweet waffle with Vanilla ice cream. For both dishes (3.45€) we opted for pouring cream, as we’re not really into the “squirty” variety. My wife described her Chocolate Fudge Cake as “very fattening, but very good” and much the same could be said of the Wicked Waffle. I could sense my girth expanding with every spoonful! Entertainment, by DJ Ian, starts at 9pm. He sings well, but if you wish to hold a dinner conversation then I advise taking a table away from the stage and disco lights area. I would have enjoyed an after dinner coffee, accompanied by a small brandy, to round off the evening’s culinary perfection but, unfortunately, the machine was off. Do I recommend dining there? As I said, I’m biased, but I do feel that I can honestly praise the experience. Petter Finne. TAKEAWAY SERVICE AVAILABLE

une 2013 will be “The month of the padron” in a campaign being coordinated by Jessica Simpson and Mojacar Positiva Se Mueve. The campaign – entitled, “Yes, you count!” – is aimed at increasing the numbers of people of all nationalities, who live in or own a property in Mojacar, registered on the padron and electoral roll. Residents’ registration lasts for five years, while non-residents need to renew every two years – so all people who sign up in June will be registered to vote in the next municipal election in May 2015. In addition to being able to vote in municipal elections, being registered on the padron brings financial benefits to the area, as the contribution to Mojacar’s budget from central government, the Junta de Andalucia and Diputacion is based in part on numbers registered. So more people registered will result in more money for the town. “As well as the right to vote you will receive many other benefits including discounts on local services. And the more people that vote in an election, the more democratic and representative the outcome will be,” said Jessica Simpson, leader of Mojacar Positiva Se Mueve, “This is not a political campaign, it’s simply to help people to realise their rights – all property owners or tenants are able to register. Being on the padron does not a ffect your tax or residential status either here or in another country where you may be resident. It also does not affect your right to vote in your own country’s national elections.” To register all you need to do is take your ID and escritura or rental contract to the town hall in Mojacar where an English speaker is always available to help. After completing the form to register on the padron, ensure that you also register to vote. Mojacar Positiva Se Mueve can help you if you need it. If you would like further information or advice contact: Jessica on 629 089 949 or email: mojacarpositivasemueve@gmail.com

The changing faces of “Betty Swollocks” Mojácár’s only drag act who regularly p erforms at Bar Med throughout the year.

An evening of classical music at Hostal Rural, Turre raised over 2000€ for PAWS. Mezzo Soprano, Sue Moretta started off the evening captivating the audience with her repertoire as she sang in English, Spanish and Italian. Pedro Clemente and Robin Wright took to the stage fusing their musical styles together and playing harmoniously as if they were one. They darted between soft and m elodic to stormy and dramatic and one musician in the a udience described their performance as, “passionate with a sophisticated display of delicate classical wizardry.” Robin brought his Double Bass to the stage and they were joined by Pedro’s twin brother, who is part of their group, El Trio Compas , and the music became even more exciting. Plans are already being made to organise another similar event.

“And now for something completely different” was performed by the Indalo Players El Teatro, at The Kimrick. A crazy mixture of chat show/live music/ comedy, and if you were really u nlucky, audience participation! Directed by Otfried Laux, this was a new venture and the start of a s eries. For details of upcoming events go to their facebook page Indalo Players - El Teatro, Mojacar. Page 24

Mama sings the Blues A night of booze, blues and BBQ promises to be another successful evening at the Hostal Rural in Turre on June 15th from 7.30pm. The event is organised for PAWS and will be starring the fantastic Mama Paula and her jazz band. Mama Paula will be supported by a few other local acts such as Mario Mariche & the Triple Trouble Blues Band, Rocio Starry and Headband. The night will finish with a jam session where all musicians will be welcome to join in. Mama Paula has played all over the world and in 1992 joined John Robinson formally of the country rock band Barbary Coast, to tour the West Indies. She has performed in front of Lady Diana and was invited to play at Lonnie Donnegan’s memorial concert alongside Joe Cocker, Mark Knopfler, Roger Daltrey and Van Morrison among others. Mama Paula, who now lives in Malaga, has had one of the leading Blues Bands along the Costa del Sol for the last ten years. The event will be attended by cars from the Classic Car Club and bikes from Harley D Bikers. Tickets for this event are 10€ from Hostal Rural and Bar Zambra in Turre, Tomas’ supermarket, Bish's laundrette, PAWS shop and Spectrum Radio in Mojacar or call 697 302 129. Food vouchers are available for the BBQ at 8€.

You Can Not Be Serious By The Other Half June; we are already half way through the year, and the longest day is hurtling inevitably towards us. We were discussing Midsummer’s Day, or the Summer Solstice, whichever you prefer to call it, when the Higher Authority quite unexpectedly asked me how I would spend my perfect Midsummer’s Day. It seemed such a whimsical question, and yet there is one thing that I would dearly love to do on that day, so I divulged my dream. ‘I would like’ I expounded, ‘to be at Stonehenge for the rising of the sun. I want to throw myself into that joyful, pagan, primeval celebration of Life with a capital L! I want to appreciate all that is earthly, to be close to the basic roots from which we all spring. I want to be one with Nature; to be part of the vast eternal plan, to be in touch with the ages past and to be a formative part of the ages to come - I want to glimpse the mystery of Life, travel the ley lines, be one with the Druids for a day.’ This uncharacteristically poetic outburst brought no reply from her. I looked round, and she was regarding me in a soft, wistful way. ‘What about you, my dear?’ I felt it only fair to ask. ‘I would like’ she answered quietly, with a faraway look in her eye, ‘to be at a performance of Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Minack Theatre. I would like to experience the faerie world that exists only for that night.’ It stopped me dead. All those years living in the southwest of England, and I never knew. Resolve, tinged with a tiny bit of guilt for not having known, entered my soul. ‘We’ll do it!’ I said. ‘I’ll book tickets, and we’ll go.’ I became the male equivalent of Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother. ‘You shall go to the Theatre.’ ‘OK,’ she said. ‘But you stop off in Salisbury, and pay homage to the ancient gods, while I go on to Porthcurnow, and pay homage to our greatest playwright.’ Ah! Midsummer! There is something, some mystical magnetism about it that affects even the most hard-nosed of us, makes us yearn to escape into fantasy, and, for a few hours at least, believe in more than the mundane – even hardened old codgers like us!

GIANT HOME RIVALRY TAKES PLACE - quietly … By Ric Polansky

Ponce de Leon, famed Spanish conquistador searched America’s Florida for the “fountain of youth”. He need not have bothered if the game of futbol had been invented then. He need only to have tossed a ball amongst his brave soldiers and allow them to relive and r ekindle those past youthful glories. So it was one Wednesday afternoon on Mojacar’s prestigious and pristine artificial turf football pitch that the two veteran teams were allowed to face each other off in a spectacular and free flowing game attended, unfortunately, by just a handful of fans. This team I have become familiar with, wherein my son plays, I know from the wonderful Sunday post game drinking bouts I often attend. They play on a sand lot field studded with rocks, dirt and plenty of sand (hence the nominative name). The “sand lot boys” are typical in fact of Mojacar and its many tongues. Some nine different n ationalities compose the team, American, Rumanian, Spanish, Lithuanian, Ecuadorian, German, a few Ingleses all run by a canny Scot known locally as Scottish Graeme. He has that magic store full of varied paraphernalia, located next to the famed Los Arcos bar, full of curiosities that you will never need unless you walk in and then you’ll be the proud owner soon of something. Graeme and English Graham make the m ulti-varied tongues work, get along and have fun. Not just fair play, but their educational skills bring on the younger members to a higher level and a better quality of game. Everyone participates, the ages vary from 16 to 50 plus, but quite often older and younger, show up for a Sunday morning game. They have a

raffle that has been won by a ten year old eight times. Fortunately, to avoid on field “wedgies” he is smart enough to buy a round or two of drinks with his substantial and frequent winnings before he blows it all on Lego pieces. When the two sides met on that Wednesday afternoon the spirit of the game ebbed and flowed and was two all at half time. The heavy breathing mandating from both benches reminded me of the old Paddington station trains huffing and puffing. Wounded and limping warriors took to the grass for the 2nd half and right away the local Spanish scored twice more. Both goals could have been off side, but it was too close to call. Just like their particular favoured multi-millionaire stars these combatants too were knocked down, wailed, cried to the Virgin Mary, got a squirt of “magic spray” and bounded to their feet rejuvenated and cured. Cowboy Kenny made some impossible saves in goal. Barracking came from the stands “Grandpa, you gotta run faster” … “Ref, didn’t you see it? He pulled my hair” was shouted, but the rebuke came back instantly, “you ain’t got no hair fool.” Both sides laughed and raced up the pitch again. The quality of play was at a high standard but the fitness of the Sand Boys weakened in the exhaustive pace. A 6-3 victory for the Spanish town side was recorded. A finish that was enjoyed by all with lots of pleasant camaraderie as they shook hands and made plans to meet later for drinks and tapas. This special event merits another meeting with a packed house of spectators. Interested in getting fit and then becoming unfit Sunday’s at Big Fat Momma’s bar near Juan the Butcher?
