udging by the photos every one who joined in the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations seemed to enjoy the craic! I have indulged myself with this month’s cover photo having once been an avid dog show exhibitor and occasional breeder. My friend Nancey won best dog and best opposite sex in her breed with her homebred American Cocker Spaniel, Nikki, at this year’s Crufts. Well done you! Apart from the rain (and the snow!) it seems Spring is here having received lots of publicity requests for events and fun days which you will find throughout this month’s issue. Bars are also getting into the entertainment swing of things so much so that I have had to split the “Life Beyond Your Lounge” section into two. It also has a new position on page 31. I have endeavoured to up-date the markets and rastros and have also included auction details. If

you spot anything incorrect, please let me know as some of the researched information was sometimes conflicting so I had to go with the best of three results. Also up-dated is the Clubs and Societies section. For your convenience I have two new classified advert drop off points: Total Entertainment, Mojácar playa and El Naranjo, Los Gallardos. Interesting bit of info. for my ‘advertisee’s’ is that I have been monitoring the website hits. As of 21st March there had been Continued over there

The first issue only had three readers up to the beginning of March as that was the test issue for the new website and that was me keeping on checking that it was working ok but even that has now gone up to 8. As mentioned in last month’s issue Iron Art have moved to a different unit on the El Real Industrial Estate, Antas. Unfortunately they are still waiting for their new signage so just to recap their position – on the main thoroughfare through the estate on the left just after the wheel roundabout. Eileen says they have had some lovely comments from those who have been into the new unit, and I must say, it is very nice. There’s a garden centre at the back, new stock of artificial flowers and wind chimes now in and an H2O water filter system on display. I can vouch for the variety of lovely nick-nacks, I found the perfect mother ’s day present in there. As this issue hopefully hits the streets Captain’s Tapas Bar and Bistro will have re-opened following refurbishments but in the event it’s out early this is Jon and Elaine’s plan. They will open on 30th and 31st March from noon ‘til 7pm for tapas and snacks. Then on the 1st of April it will be all systems go! The new a la carte menu will be available and they will be open noon ‘til close every day except Monday. Zak’s Plaice in Garrucha thanks all his customers for their tremendous support with his March Madness offers and has decided to carry on a selection of 5 euro specials. Their opening times have also changed to the summer hours of 12pm to 3pm and 6pm to 10.30pm, Tuesday to Saturday. Harmony Gym are holding a Ladies’ Day on Saturday 10th April from 11am until 3pm where you can check out the new PhD safe waxing system, no cross contamination or

New to Harmony Gym is a food allergy testing clinic which during the month of April will be offering tests for only 30€ (normally 50€). It is a quick and painless food sensitivity test with immediate results by using a non-invasive method based on biofeedback on your body. You sit at a table and hold a small electrode connected to the EAV machine. The tester uses a probe to touch one of your fingers at an acupuncture point. The EAV machine measures your body response to food substances contained in small ampoules, which are placed in the machine in turn. Once any allergies or food sensitivities have been detected, a simple elimination programme is offered for the offending items, nutritional advice and remedial treatment. Why wait any longer to live the rest of your life pain free? • Foods which can cause sensitivity: Almond, Apricot, Avocado, Banana, Beans, Beef, Bread, Butter, Cabbage, Carrot, Cashew Nuts, Cheese (Brie, Cheddar, Goat), Eggs, Chicken, Chocolate, Coca Cola,

♣The Cave Bar is now under the

management of Cristina and Paul. Cristina is no stranger to the area as she was born here. Old timers will remember her grandmother, Maureen, who ran a second hand shop called Aladdin's in the Guardia Vieja building, near D.Match Digital. In the eighties, until Talisman Petter came along, Cristina’s dad, Paul Axford was the only person who could talk “computers”. Not wasting anytime, The Cave Bar has something now going on every day. See their ad on page 29. Reflections Snooker table has been a great success since its arrival a month ago for which a booking system is in operation. It can be booked from 1pm ‘til 12 midnight everyday except Friday and Saturdays 1pm ‘til 9pm due to the 70s, 80s Disco. To book telephone Karen or Chris on 665 919 916. And finally…proof that people not only read ‘The Advertiser’ but also keep it. Cool Air vehicle air conditioning had a call as a result of their business report in the mid June 2009 issue because a fact within the report that was actually incorrect was quoted! And finally, finally don’t forget the new classified drop off points: Total Entertainment, Mojácar playa and El Naranjo in Los Gallardos.

I

found a very promising new website this week. I say promising because it has only just started up and it needs your help to grow and reach its full potential. The addy is www.mojacarlife.ning.com. Mojacarlife is a comprehensive social networking site specifically for people and businesses in and around Mojácar. In essence it works very similarly to Facebook but the emphasis it has on remaining local and fun is key to its utility. With many of the useful network features normally found on such sites as myspace and facebook such as the ability to announce events to a large number of people in an instant, and do so for free, mojacarlife is going to prove itself as an essential tool for any business in the area. The emphasis on fun at mojacarlife is quite apparent and you’ll see this when you fill out the hilarious profile questionnaire for enrolment. It’s very quick and easy to enrol so give it a go and make sure to use the “invite friends” application. The “invite friends” application appears as a window just after you have joined and it lets you select and import people of your choice from your contacts list. This is really important because the more members mojacarlife gets on there the more useful it will be to everyone. I should add that none of the addresses are used or passed on in any way. If you like Facebook you’ll like www.mojacarlife.ning.com. If you own a bar, restaurant or business

anywhere in the area then get on there and start announcing what you have to offer. The membership may be meagre at the moment but you can bet good money that mojacarlife will become an integral part of anything that’s going on in this corner of Spain. Advertising any kind of service or endeavour is free and adverts can be posted as photos which will appear periodically on the main page as a slide show. It has a chat room service so you can instant message people and I’m told that the Forum section is going to be particularly useful in many areas as soon as enough helpful people have joined up. I like the philosophy of this site. It reminds me a lot of those heady days when the internet was just getting started. When we hoped and opined about the freedom of information and the optimism of mass communication. This really is a place that is purely for the user’s benefit. Next time you go online go to www.mojacarlife.ning.com. Join up and invite your friends. Let’s build our own local online community for the benefit of everyone involved. From something useful to something so bizarre I really cannot decide why I’m telling you about it but tell you about it I must. The site is www.seemerot.com which is basically a website that provides the service of fitting lighting and a webcam inside your coffin. I hope this is not simply for the purpose of macabre voyeurism and perhaps serves the purpose of allying the fears of people who genuinely fear being buried alive. I know this was a massive concern in Victorian times as many exhumed coffins at that time showed signs of, shall we say, struggle. A phenomenon popularised by the great Edgar

"Friends and I are creating a list of movies made in Almeria province in which famous stars and locals alike participated. The stars will be easy to view, but it would be fun for me to note down the "bit roles" played by friends on the street that we see every day. Specifically, what was the scene … what "action" came before their appearance and what after. WE, the viewing public want to know exactly where you were in the film. Our data-base will create a "mini"-movie script" of the film so that YOU and others can be noticed. My friends Gareth and Nicki Phillips are putting together all the movies so they can be rented out and the data-base too. If you know of someone who has been in the movies, videos, advertisements, and live here in Mojácar and worked as an extra or walk on star, let us know so we can include them in our ‘Hour of Fame’.

D In England, the custom of washing the feet of the poor by the Monarch on Maundy Thursday in Westminster Abbey, was carried out until 1689. (the feet being first washed by Yeoman of the Laundry before the monarch had to wash them and kiss them!). D In Britain today the Queen follows a very traditional role of giving Maundy Money. The men and women who receive the coins are all retired pensioners recommended by clergy and ministers of all denominations, in recognition of service to the Church and to the community. The tradition of the Sovereign giving money to the poor dates from the reign of Edward I in the 13th century. From the fifteenth century, the amount of Maundy Money handed out, and the number of people receiving the coins, is related to the years of the Sovereign’s life. D Pretzels were first shaped to indicate the torso of a person with arms folded, praying. D At “The Widow's Son” London pub a Hot Cross Bun Ceremony takes place each Good Friday. In the early 19th century, a widow who lived on the site was expecting her sailor son back home for Easter and placed a hot cross bun ready for him on Good Friday. The son never returned, but undaunted the widow left the bun waiting for him and added a new bun each year. Successive landlords have kept the tradition.

D In 1878 President Hayes and his wife Lucy officially opened the White House grounds to the children of the area for egg rolling on Easter Monday. D The most famous decorated Easter eggs were those made by the well-known goldsmith, Peter Carl Faberge. In 1883 the Russian Czar, Alexander, commissioned Faberge to make a special Easter gift for his wife, the Empress Marie. D Around 80 million chocolate eggs are eaten each year in Britain. D Good Friday was not celebrated as the day Christ died until the 4th century A.D. D Christians believe that Jesus stood in our place. His death paying the penalty not for his own wrong doings, but for ours. D The Guinness World Records certified the world's largest edible egg on 24th March 2005 by Belgian chocolate maker Guylian. It was 27 feet 3 inches tall, 21 feet wide, and weighed 4,299 pounds. Twenty-six Guylian master chocolate makers took eight days and used a total of 50,000 Guylian Praline chocolate bars. D Easter cards arrived in Victorian England, when a stationer added a greeting to a drawing of a rabbit. The cards proved popular.

D Easter, the most important festival in the Christian calendar commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. In AD 325 the church council of Nicaea decided that it should be celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the vernal equinox of March 21st which is why Easter can come as early as March 22nd or as late as April 25th. D Easter, ‘Semana Santa’, is regarded as the most important festival in Spain. The celebrations start with ‘Domingo de Ramos’ (Palm Sunday) and finish with ‘Lunes de Pascua’ (Easter Monday). Parades are organized throughout the country, with people carrying huge, leafy palm or olive branches blessed in the church. ‘Corpus Christi’ is the prime ritual practiced where the streets pose as the stage for displays of religious passion and devotion. D The first Easter baskets were made to look like bird's nests. D The traditional act of painting eggs is called Pysanka. D The custom of giving eggs at Easter time has been traced back to Egyptians, Persians, Gauls, Greeks and Romans, to whom the egg was a symbol of life. D In medieval times a festival of eggthrowing was held in church, during

which the priest would throw a hardboiled egg to one of the choir boys. It was then tossed from one choir boy to the next and whoever held the egg when the clock struck 12 was the winner and retained the egg. D Easter Bonnets are a throw back to the days when the people denied themselves the pleasure of wearing fine angels for the duration of Lent. D Every year at Easter Pope John Paul sends his " Urbi et Orbi " to the world. D The white lily is the symbol of the resurrection. D The Easter bunny has its origin in pre-Christian fertility lore. The Hare and the Rabbit were the most fertile animals known and they served as symbols of the new life during the Spring season. D The bunny as an Easter symbol seems to have its origins in Germany, where it was first mentioned in German writings in the 1500s. The first edible Easter bunnies, made of pastry and sugar, were made in Germany during the early 1800s. The Easter bunny was introduced to American folklore by the German settlers who arrived in the Pennsylvania Dutch country during the 1700s. D Decorating and colouring eggs for Easter was a common custom in England in the middle ages. Eggs were brightly coloured to mimic the new, fresh colours of spring. The practice of decorating eggs was made even more famous by King Edward I of England who ordered

Tai Chi And Its Many Hidden Treasures by Steve Burton Mojácar based Tai Chi Instructor

Winging it! ... A view from the pilot’s seat ... by Chris Pickles Sol-aero Flyers

W

RUDDER The Rudder is found on the tail fin, and is foot operated. This “yaws” or turns the aircraft, not very elegantly though, like a car skidding on ice. But this skidding motion also lifts the outside wing causing the aircraft to roll.

ELEVATOR The Elevator is on the tailplane, and is operated by forward and aft movement of the control column, pitching the nose up or down, allowing the plane to climb or descend. Pitching also varies the drag, which in turn varies the airspeed!

The Throttle controls thrust, propelling us forward faster, this in turn creates more airflow, therefore more lift. We are climbing!! So, now you know how it all works, let’s look at some scenarios!! • Suppose the rudder cable breaks? You still have yaw control with aileron, hard work, but you’ll live! • Suppose the control column jams? More serious, you have no aileron, or elevator, but you still have yaw and roll control with rudder, and you can climb or descend using the throttle. • And the engine stopping? We glide! As long as we maintain sufficient airflow over the wings, we maintain control. This is done by lowering the nose and using gravity. Most light aircraft will descend at about 500 feet per minute, and are capable of landing within 200m. Engine failures should be seen as extremely inconvenient, not life threatening. A good pilot will never fly anywhere where a forced landing is not possible. Now will you come flying with me?? I’d ride in your car!, even in the tourist season!! Far more dangerous!!! Until next time, Chocks away!! Sol-aero flyers. Pleasure flights, PPL Training, photography. See main advert or call 609 685 132/661 985 358 (Chris/Jan)

his is the third article in the series to date so let us begin by summarising, what we have discussed so far. The art of Tai Chi found me at the perfect time and over a number of years many benefits have become apparent. More awareness to the physical tension I was holding on to, which has allowed me to be and become more relaxed, both physically, mentally and emotionally. My level of patience has improved, meaning I am now a lot calmer and at peace with life. I now have an ability to be able to concentrate and focus for longer periods of time and to choose when to be quiet and still as the need arises. The practice of Tai Chi has a number of health and lifestyle benefits. Those include improved circulation, an increased awareness and concentration, the ability to be able to relax, reduction in stress and tension of both the mental and physical body. In specific cases people have talked about improvement in their arthritis, greater flexibility and movement. Reduction in headaches and migraines, faster recovery rate from illness, in particular post operations, reduction in blood pressure and a greater sense of well being. SO HOW AND WHY IS THIS THE CASE? When we choose to become personally responsible and take direct action to change, and in particular to participate in a sport or physical activity. We are allowing our bodies and mind the chance to gain freedom of movement and we enhance the flow of energy around our body. Within Tai Chi the physical movements we make are taken with a focus on being relaxed. As we become more self aware of the tension in our bodies we can then take corrective action to release these tensions and focus on being more relaxed or less tense. The exercises and movements are designed to be practised with a specific attention and focus yet always being aware of being relaxed, slow and gentle. We are aiming for a state of “Sung” that is relaxing without tension and undue floppiness. THE FUTURE JOURNEY As with many different sports or hobbies, practice improves your ability to perform and enjoy the experience. Tai Chi may well be a very different challenge as you are training your mind and body to achieve postures and movements that may initially seem awkward or difficult. A level of dedication and persistence is required to enable the many hidden talents inside of you to be revealed. Once you have learned the first part of the form (for most students 12-18 months) you will have access to a set of flowing movements that will enable you to see, feel and experience sufficient changes that you can then implement in areas of your everyday life. You will have developed a programme of exercises and movements coupled with an introduction and experience of the inner journey via Qi Gong (standing post meditation). With a balance of your inscape and outscape a potential new you will emerge. With a commitment to ongoing practise many hidden treasures await you. As each person has a different mind and a different body your Tai Chi journey is a very personal experience. One that I can only encourage you to start based on my own personal journey and experience.

AILERONS Ailerons, at the ends of the wings, are operated by lateral movement of the control column in the cockpit. These roll the plane, wingtip to wingtip, also, as a secondary effect, the aircraft turns, like a banked motorcycle.

ill you come flying with me? The most common response is to decline with comments like “it’s too dangerous” or, “what if the engine stops?” Flying is inherently safe, very few serious accidents are due to aircraft failure, but still, anything man-made can go wrong. However, not many non-flyers realise just how much control you actually have, or how many things can go wrong before it becomes hopeless!! To understand this, we need a basic idea of what makes aircraft fly in the first place. The first lesson for any student is to experience the effects of individual controls. The shape of the wings alters the air flowing past them in a way that creates a higher pressure under the wing than above it. If the airflow is sufficient, this difference in pressure will overcome the weight of the aircraft and up we go. Lift! The airflow itself is generated by propelling the aircraft forward with thrust from the engine. Changing the shape of the wings, changes the amount of lift they generate, this is done by moveable surfaces on various parts of the aircraft.

Ann and Reg Brighton celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary at Badger’s on 22nd February. When they were courting Reg was a student engineer but with a new family to support and the only place, at that time, where one could get "full rates" Reg became a bus conductor and later, a driver. Ann was a shop assistant. Later they had a newsagent shop, and then Reg landed a job with Rothmans cigarettes, eventually becoming a sales representative for them. They had purchased a holiday apartment in Guardias Viejas in Mojácar in 1987 so when eventually they felt it was time to leave Rothmans and, since they already knew Mojácar well, came here. That is how it came to pass that in 1989 they became the proud new owners of "Snoopy's" on Mojácar playa, and for the best part of twenty years were synonymous with the name. Over time, their three children also came to live here, and Ann and Reg now have 5 grandchildren living here in Spain. A few years ago the business ceased to be owned by the Brighton family, then underwent a name change, and is now the premises of Arriba. Incidentally Reg and Ann's present house is their 15th home since getting married. No moss there!

ac em fashion show A Huge Success

The fashion show which took place at Puerto Marina Hotel on Saturday 6th March was proof that great things can be achieved if we have community spirit and teamwork. The show went really well thanks to the help received from all areas of our community. Three weeks before the show the original organisers had to bow out due to personal circumstances. Problem? Oh Yes! But the show must go on. So, with all the components but unsure of how to put them together we called for help from Carolyn Jordan who has experience of both modelling and PR. Also Carmel Langdon from Spectrum FM who, along with Bob, sorted out the music and sound system. Carmel was also compère on the night. Ticket sales were fantastic due to the hard work of Acem members and local residents. We had lots of panics as well as laughter along the way and the days leading up to the show were both exciting and stressful. The town hall was also a great help, lending and transporting the catwalk to the event. Catastrophe struck the day before the show when we realised we did not have enough screens. So we went back to the town hall for more help. Screens we begged! Then, on the morning there was no carpet for the catwalk (by this time I wanted to scream!) So we sent Karin, our President, off to Andres Valero who kindly let us have a carpet at cost. Ready to rock at last. The temperature is rising backstage. Our models, most of whom had never done any modelling before, were fantastic. The bravery awards going to Sam, Sarah and Greg for modelling the swimwear and underwear. Julie, sexy and voluptuous, representing all women who are not so thin. Angela, who is over 65, representing the more mature with much gusto. The boys, Oliver and Nick, who did so well backstage with all those girls. Also Marianne, Ellen, Jessica, Raquel, Virginia, Jan, Sandra, Sheridan, Nina (and co-pilot!) and our Acem committee member Pat of Arriba (who also did so much to help with the food, raffle and organising stalls). Thanks to the shops, Gatsby’s, Corpore, Esencia, Saga, Gala, Oggy, Cahoots, Portobello and Sunflower. My sincere thanks also to Cathy, the dresser, Kay and Victoria for make-up and the Bonita girls, Michelle and Debbie, for the hairstyling. Diego Torres Electrics, Flamenco dancers, Valerie and Veronica, Betty Swollocks and Arriba Arriba without whose invaluable help the event would not have been the huge success it was. The fashion show was attended by over 300 guests with queues outside even after the show began, be proud of yourselves. Many thanks to all models and helpers. I will be in touch with all of you for the next one in October. Solomojacar has now been in business for just over a month and has had success already!! With just over 20 people signing up to this service in 4 weeks we have had 2 completions, The Cave Bar, Mojácar Playa and a long term rental for Mr Gavin Shepherd who because he paid no commission was able to put his monthly price down to a realistic and attractive price. This enabled his property to be rented out within 48 hours of it being advertised. We also have given property details out to over 15 people in this time who are interested in buying or renting property at the attractive prices advertised by our clients. Gary Funnell runs Solomojacar and decided on this venture due to the success of his Telitec agency that he has been running in Mojácar for over 16 months as he gets over 30 clients a day in his new office (within AXA Insurance, near the Irish Rover) for top ups, signing up their mobile or land line calls, unblocking and selling mobile phones. This also means that because of his

close proximity to the beach he is getting lots of passing trade to look at the various properties advertised in his window and has had lots of favourable comments on his specially built 32" digital screen displaying clients property 24 hours day with their contact details listed on each property. In fact because he

has over 1,500 clients through Telitec he is giving a discount to every Telitec customer that signs up with Solomojacar. Solomojacar are also advertising on Spectrum radio therefore the website is sure to get more and more viewings. You only need to send Gary 6 or 7 quality photos of your property or he

will come and take some if you don't have any, then give him some description of the property and your contact details and your villa, apartment, for rent or sale, will be displayed in his window within 48 hours. If you would like to discuss any details of this great service and save yourself thousands in agents fees call: Gary on 950 473 102 or e-mail him on gary@solomojacar.com For a one off fee your property will be advertised in Solomojacar’s window display on the digital screens in Solomojacar but also in Bar Cielo Rojo, The Irish Rover, Cepsa petrol station, Mojácar and GB Stores, in the local press and on the solomojacar.com website which has been specially designed in a programme that enables it to move up the search engines quickly. Even if you are already with an estate agent advertise your property with us, as you will really be advertising it yourself as all details given out will have your contact details thereby giving your property more exposure.

T

he Luvvies are pleased to report the great success of their recent 5th anniversary production of Hobson’s Choice. Performed at Martin Garcia Ramos Secondary School in Albox, in their excellent theatre, it attracted many compliments from the audience. The production was well attended on all three nights, despite some competition from Valentine’s Day celebrations! Particular note should be made of the spectacular costumes, with much attention to the details of life in the 1880s. This ambitious production also included two different sets, and our behind the scenes crew excelled themselves in both an adaptable design and smart changeovers between acts. Some nice comments from our patrons ... "I enjoyed the show very much, well done to all concerned. You must all have put in a lot of work, and for

me at least, the result was well worth it!” (email from J.B.) "....many congratulations for Hobson's Choice. We went last Thursday and it was excellent. When in UK (Manchester) we used to go to the theatre all the time and your production was as good (if not better) than many professional productions we have seen. Well done all of you." (email from P.& L.) "We came to your opening night of Hobson's Choice and really enjoyed the performance. I would like to congratulate your director on the casting for this show - all the characters were just right especially Hobson and Maggie, they were exceptional. Hope to see more plays of this quality in the future.” (email from P.M.) As a non-profit amateur group, we congratulate all our members and helpers in making an expensive production into a financial

success too, enabling us to cover our costs, and produce a small surplus which will go towards further productions during the year. Not so well known is our contribution towards the English departments of local schools. We presented the first act of the play to the Martin Garcia Ramos School, and also moved our whole production, sets and all, to the Cardenal Cisneros school for the first time.

With our productions getting bigger and better we are always looking to welcome new members; right now we would like to strengthen our backstage crew for our June production, so why not pop in to a regular Wednesday meeting (2:30ish at Rumores in Albox) and get to meet us. PUPPY RESCUE in SPAIN Calle Málaga, Albox, 04800 www.puppyrescueinspain.com Tel: 667 623 254 26 DOGS & PUPPIES GO TO HOLLAND fter months of planning, organising and fund-raising we have successfully sent 24 of our dogs and puppies plus 2 from Friends of the Animals to Holland to be re-homed. These dogs originally should have gone in January but, with a shortage of funds, then having been let down by a Dutch transport company, the trip was delayed. Then, thanks to Geoff and Steve with their van, they finally left Albox on Sunday 20th February. They have now all arrived safely in Holland where there are people waiting to offer them new homes. We will get regular updates from Holland as the dogs get homed and will keep our notice boards updated for all to see. We would like to thank all the people who brought in their odd earrings and broken bits of gold jewellery to raise funds, to those who made donations and attended our fund-raising events, to the many people that save all their loose change for us. Without you this would never have been possible and the dogs may well have spent the rest of their lives in kennels. We will continue to raise funds and collect gold so that hopefully we can send more un-homed dogs and puppies to Holland later in the year. We would like to say a very special thank you to Christina Clements, without whose help, advice, knowledge and contacts we would never have got this project off the ground. Thanks to you all Diane Price P.P. Puppy Rescue

The pitter patter of petty pennings

Yesterday the sun was shining brightly into the lounge window. Today it is overcast, but still pretty warm, and there is bustle on the streets just beyond my door. As is often the case, I am listening to Valle Radio's morning programme with Mike Hall. Yesterday I even phoned him to answer his daily 10.30 am quiz question, where Mike's new snooker hall gives away a free bottle of wine for the first correct answer. The trouble is we all face stiff competition from Gigi of Paws, who seems to hover, paw over the phone cradle, like a cat ready to pounce! Today it is my granddaughter's birthday and I'm expecting her to arrive on the bus from school any moment. That's why I'm keeping a sharp lookout at the bustling street I'm waiting for a big, red doubledecker with the number 266 on the front. Sorry, did you think I was in Almeria? No way! Not when we had three UK birthdays to celebrate. My son's fortieth was on the first of March, with a party on March 6th, and also in March was the 90th birthday of Lesley's uncle Harry and the 4th birthday of a special little girl I know!! Valle radio comes through loud and clear on my netbook, via www.valleradio.eu and I use Skype to phone and annoy the presenters as and when the mood takes me. Spain has really had some topsy-turvy weather. The 27th February was a lovely warm day, more like mid spring than winter, with the temperature reaching 24 degrees. However, that night, by 11pm, the temperature had reached 25 degrees! That same day I dropped into Reflections, where there is a very large TV screen, to watch the Scotland team be beaten by Italy in the 6 nations rugby, mainly because Italy didn't miss their opportunities, whilst Scotland appeared to be

making very heavy work of it. I then went home to attend to a few chores and afterwards strolled down to the Cave Bar to watch the England versus Ireland match on the Cave bar's High definition TV system. That was a fantastic match, both for the passion with which the two teams played and the clarity of the picture. As far as sports are concerned, I've definitely become converted to the idea of HDTV, where I could even see individual beads of sweat on the brows of the players. For the past few years almost every television set has bragged it is "HD ready", but now you can get a decent HDTV receiver and LNB from D.Match. This year the six nations trophy definitely belonged to France, which achieved a grand slam, although England did put up a decent attempt to beat them in the very last match of the event. Scotland, by contrast, were fortunate to avoid winning a wooden spoon, and that’s only thanks to a last minute penalty kick in their final match - when they were drawing 20 all against Ireland. Right! That should be enough revenge against those fanatics who insist on talking about football all day long! Why anyone should wish to restrict themself to using only half their available limbs when playing sports is quite beyond my understanding. Most weekdays it is very convenient to walk down to cafe Los Arcos from our house for elevenses, but on Sundays we enjoy a stroll to Casa Egea (it's in between Sitio and Esencial, just before you reach the part of Mojacar playa, near Hotel Indalo, that we old timers call "The Strip".) Whilst there I also tuck in to a tapa of garlic, to which a subtle hint of potato has been added! The tapas in Casa Egea are excellent and very Spanish and in the old days it was an extremely popular venue amongst the ex-pat population. I'm surprised I see so few in there these days. When you want typical Spanish cuisine and tapas it is a wonderful choice, whilst the prices are decidedly "old fashioned" and "pocket friendly".

The Dog House Foundation

Abandoning your Dogs and Pets is an Illegal Offence

Following discussions with Saprona, the animal welfare branch of The Guardia Civil, it has become apparent that, the abandonment of dogs and pets is classified as animal cruelty and, as such, is an illegal offence. The Dog House Foundation of Huercal Overa will work closely in conjunction with Saprona, to secure a conviction of anyone found to be abandoning or mistreating animals. Anyone with information regarding the abandonment or mistreatment of animals, or requiring further information can contact The Dog House Foundation by telephone on 626 766 073 or by email at thedoghse@hotmail.com

I don't know how many of Mojacar's bar and restaurant owners are aware of it these days, but do you know that if any business open to the public, even a gym, simply has a television set on view anywhere then the owner has to pay a fee to the Performing Rights Society. (In Spain it is called the S.G.A.E.) The minimum fee is 50 euros every three months. i.e. 200 euros a year and can be as high as 300 euros per quarter. If you play live music then an additional fee is payable and a karaoke system incurs a huge fee. I remember how, years ago, Music Musica was paid a surprise visit by an S.G.A.E inspector and then slapped with a bill that was nearly the same as their annual rent bill. They had a multiple screen karaoke system and were told that full royalties were payable for each monitor, even though they were all connected to the same system, as well as further royalties because they also played background music. The S.G.A.E. has become a bit less unreasonable since then, but not by much. If you have a children's dance school, for instance, or even a play group during which you play music, you are liable to a music royalty fee - and a fine if you haven't paid one. The fee varies according to the size of the premises, so a gym with a twenty person aerobics class could be liable to a higher fee than a busy pavement cafe. I was reminded of this "legalised robbery" when I read recently in La Voz de Almeria about a taxi driver who was "done" for playing a music cassette without having paid the performing rights society. Unfortunately, his passenger was one of their inspectors. By the way, town halls should note that if they play canned music during a fiesta, they too are liable to a hefty fee. What really gets my goat though is that the S.G.A.E. has even persuaded the government to slap a 25 cent "canon" on every single blank CD that is legally sold in Spain. Ostensibly it is supposed to compensate for the loss of revenue because you "might" make a pirate copy of someone else's intellectual property. I used to buy hundreds of

blank CDs in order to make back up copies of our magazines and the clients' advert files, as well as to give people copies of photos I had taken - all of it my very own intellectual property. What do you think happened when I tried to claim back the "canon"? Nowt! "It's the law", I was told. ... yet woe betide anyone who makes a pirate CD on the grounds that they have already paid the piracy canon! By the way, it's no defence to say that a TV set is only there to show sports by satellite, or that it is only used when the premises are closed. It's the fact that there is a TV set in a public area, working or otherwise, that is taken into account.

Sebas at Sinaloa (before or after the ribs, that is the question?!) However, the plucky town of Velez Rubio has put its foot down with a very firm NO and, so the papers report, a court case is pending. I do agree with their main objection. Performing Rights Societies are supposed to exist for the benefit of performers, authors and owners of intellectual property. However, much of the money collected disappears in the cost of maintaining themselves! As far as I can gather, what cash is left over then seems to go into a general pot, from which members collect their (usually small) annual payout according to a "popularity" rating, meaning the famous groups get most of the pot. Furthermore, if you are not a paid up member, then you won't benefit anyway. The pitter patter of petty pennings continues on page 27

St. George Saint George is the patron saint of England. He is popularly identified with England and English ideals of honour, bravery and gallantry - but actually he wasn't English at all. Very little, if anything, is known about the real Saint George. The story of Saint George is so wrapped in myth and legend that it's difficult to extract the historical facts of a real life. Some believe

• The 23rd of April was named as Saint George's day in 1222.

• From 14th Century St George was regarded as a special protector of the English. Soldiers were called to wear a red cross on their chest and back. • The flag of St George, a red cross

dressed in a white tunic bedecked with a red cross, astride his stallion, and skewering a dragon as he rescues a fair maiden, depends more on a late medieval and Renaissance ideal than on his legend in its earlier forms, in which the dragon and the maiden play no part and George's role is one of verbal jousting and violent suffering rather than knightly derring-do.

21st: St. Anselm died 1109 (born, Aosta Italy, about 1033). Outstanding philosopher; argument still rages over his so-called ontological proof of the existence of God. Monk at Bec, France, 1060. Elected Archbishop of Canterbury, 1093. 21st: Henry VII, King of England, died 1509 (born 1457). Won the crown at Bosworth field, 1485, and established the house of Tudor. The Henry VII Chapel at Westminster Abbey, built in 1503, where he is buried, was intended by him as a shrine to his uncle Henry VI. 23rd: Birthday of William Shakespeare, 1564 (died 1616). Although the actual date of birth is not known, traditionally, April 23, St George's Day, has been Shakespeare's accepted birthday, and a house on Henley Street in Stratford, owned by William's father, John, accepted as his birth place. However, the reality is that no one really knows when the great dramatist was born and the assumption that the Bard was born on the same day of the month that he died lends an exciting esoteric highlight to the otherwise mundane details of his life. Shakespeare wrote at least thirty-seven plays over a period of about twenty years, but many believe several more plays should be included in the body of his work. A surviving document shows that he began his career on the stage in 1592 and it is assumed that he played many roles in a variety of his own plays. 23rd: Edith Vane-Tempest-Stewart, Marchioness of Londonderry, political hostess, died 1959 (born Edith Chaplin 1878). Between the wars, at Londonderry House, Park Lane, held weekly “Ark” with herself as Circe, Balfour as “Arthur the Albatross”, Churchill as “Winston the Warlock”

Their achievement was recognised in 1962 when they received the Nobel Prize for Physiology. 26th: First broadcast of "The Sky at Night", 1957. 26th: William Connor, “Cassandra” of the Daily Mirror, born 1909 (died 1967). Joined the Mirror 1935. Sued for libel with surprising success by Liberace in 1959 for calling him a “deadly, winking, sniggering, snuggling, chromiumplated, scent-impregnated, luminous, quivering, giggling, fruitflavoured, mincing, ice-covered heap of mother love”. The words “fruit-flavoured” were held to impute homosexuality, which Liberace denied. Knighted 1966. 27th: Samuel Finley Breeze Morse born 1791. Professional painter and inventor of the telegraph, a seed which grew from an overheard shipboard discussion on electromagnets. Morse is more remembered for his still used Code, than for the invention that enabled it to be used. The first message sent by the electric telegraph was "What hath God wrought", from the Supreme Court Room in the Capitol to the railway depot at Baltimore on May 24th 1844. 27th: Mary Wollstonecraft, feminist, born 1759. The Rights of Woman published 1792. Married William Godwin 1797 and died that year after giving birth to Mary, later Mary Shelley.

Mojácar Long Term Rentals The Descent: Part 2 It’s back down into those Appalachian caves for The Descent: Part 2, though it stretches credulity, to say the least, that the search-and-rescue party should include Sarah (Shauna Macdonald), the conveniently amnesiac survivor of bloodthirsty troglodytes in Neil Marshall’s terrific original film. The logic of dragging her in again is ridiculous, but Jon Harris’s sequel handily improves as it goes along, clambering backwards along the same route the six girls took first time around. It’s not long before boulders come crashing down, the blind critters swarm in, and everyone deduces that keeping very, very still is their only true survival tool. The last half-hour is a tense team scramble to get out, and stay out, but the best move in this above-par shocker is digging right back into the claustrophobic emotional traumas which made Part 1 so thrilling.

continued When we first came here Thomas, who had a restaurant near the Hotel Indalo, had also just opened a grocery shop in the Cueva del Lobo area. To the right of this supermarket was a small restaurant, also owned by Thomas, and underneath the complex was a night club, called The White Lady, where Rosanne used to sing. This was in the days when what is now a curry house in the Guardia Vieja building was a night club called the Casablanca. One wore a jacket and tie when going there and then, still properly attired, continued to The White Lady. Later, the restaurant next door to Thomas supermarket was taken over by Richard and Veronica Flitney and made its name for a reasonably priced menu and a broad range of vegetarian cuisine, available to order. Later, the restaurant was gutted and the space where it had been was incorporated into Thomas supermarket as a butchery section. Now the wheel has almost turned full circle. Due to changes in the law regarding the

preparation of meats, Thomas supermarket will no longer offer a range of freshly cut meats, and instead that end of the supermarket is being rebuilt as a restaurant. Thomas tells me that his existing restaurant, "El Meson el Que Faltaba", which is presently in the premises that used to be Music Musica, will be moving soon to this new location. March was a month of many local birthdays, starting with Maggie Lake's 60th on the first day of March. Chris, of the Jolly Lemon, gained a year on March 6th. Then there was Diamond Lil's birthday on Paddy's day. March also saw the birthdays of Dave Clift and of Russell in the Rusty Nail. Congratulations also to old timer friend, Gordon, who celebrated his 80th birthday on March 11th. Reg and Ann, who recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, opened Snoopy's under their stewardship on the 1st March, 1990. On the 15th March it was 35 years to the day since another old timer friend, Bob Jones, first clapped eyes on Mojacar and on March 27th, just before this rag returned from the printers, it was the 45th wedding anniversary of Pauline and Alan

Bishop. Looking ahead, Kuki's opened on Mojacar playa on the 13th April, 1994. Before leaving Mojacar to drive to London we stocked up with a few Spanish luxuries for the family, such as Manchego cheese, embutidos and "Chovi" Allioli. As we handed over his share of these goodies, our son opened his fridge door to reveal a tub of "Chovi" Allioli that he had discovered the previous day - in Waitrose, Banstead. For years he's been searching for it in vain in every delicatessen in Surrey.

As I wandered around the Banstead and Acton areas of London I came across many cafes offering "6 item" breakfasts for between £2.50 and £2.95 while a full, traditional all day breakfast, including a pot of tea, is commonly available for £4.50 or so. Due to the present low exchange rate, this makes London cheaper than Mojacar - until you fill your fuel tank. Cheers, Petter. PAGE 27

April ... ... Facts, Customs, Traditions Flower: Sweet Pea Gemstone: Diamond It is not certain how April got its name, but it may have come from the Latin word 'aperire' which means 'to open'. Eostre monath or Eastremonath was the Anglo-Saxon name for the month and where the name Easter derived from. The Cuckoo’s arrival some time in mid-April is the signal that Spring has come. It sings from St. Tiburtius' Day (14th April) to St John's Day (24th June). Superstition claims that if you should hear the cuckoo sing on St. Tiburtius' Day, you should turn over all the money in your pockets, spit and not look at the ground! If you do this and are standing on soft ground when you do it, you will have loads of good luck. But if you are standing on hard ground - the cuckoo's call means bad luck. However in Worcestershire there is a saying that the cuckoo is never heard before Tenbury Fair (April 21st), or after Pershore Fair (June 26th). The difference in dates is because traditionally the bird arrives in different parts of the country during April. Various April dates are called 'Cuckoo Day ' and some places hold 'Cuckoo Fairs'. Marsden Cuckoo Day in West Yorkshire is an annual traditional festival that celebrates the arrival of spring. According to a local legend, Marsdeners used to try to prolong the cuckoo's stay by building a wall around its nest. PAGE 28

Heathfield Cuckoo Fair in East Sussex has an annual tradition of releasing a cuckoo to mark the beginning of summer. A tale of Heathfield Fair depicts an Old Woman releasing the Cuckoo from her basket, whereupon he "flies up England carrying warmer days with him". Downton Cuckoo Fair is an annual traditional event held on the greens of the picturesque village of Downton, south of Salisbury, Wiltshire. The fair marks the "opening the gate" to let the cuckoo through. The Swallow makes its reappearance during April. In early years people were mystified by the disappearance of many birds during the winter and at one time thought that the swallow spent the cold months hidden in the mud at the bottom of ponds. Traditionally April 15th is 'Swallow Day' in England, the date on which returning swallows were seen again. April Fool’s Day (1st) is a day of jokes and tricks but you have to play the joke before 12 o’clock midday, otherwise the joke is on you. Whilst it is not really known when this custom began it has been kept for hundreds of years. It is commonly believed that it came about because of the change to the Gregorian calendar in 1582, In accordance with the old Julian calendar, New Year was celebrated from March 25th to April 1st. In France, some people were forgetful of this whilst

others refused to accept the new calendar so still celebrated New Year on April 1st which led others to play tricks on them and call them April Fools. The Jewish custom of making fools arose from the fact that Noah sent out the dove on the first of the month corresponding to our April. April fooling became popular in England and Scotland during the 1700s. Jokes usually involve persuading someone to do something silly, like looking for hen's teeth, striped paint, a long weight, a left-handed screwdriver or some other non-existent thing. In 1957 the TV programme Panorama fooled millions of Brits into believing that spaghetti grew on trees! The show announced that thanks to a very mild winter and the virtual elimination of the dreaded spaghetti weevil, Swiss farmers were enjoying a bumper spaghetti crop. In 1980 the BBC reported that Big Ben, in order to keep up with the times, was going to be given a digital readout. It received a huge response from listeners protesting the change. The BBC Japanese service also announced that the clock hands would be sold to the first 4 listeners to contact them, and one Japanese seaman in the midAtlantic immediately radioed in a bid. In 2000 early morning commuters travelling on the northern carriageway of the M3 near

Farnborough, Hampshire encountered a pedestrian zebra crossing painted across the busy highway. In 2002 Tesco published an advertisement announcing the successful development of a genetically modified whistling carrot with tapered air holes in their side. The extraordinary carrots would start to whistle once fully cooked! Daffodil Sunday. The first Sunday in April (4th 2010). In Victorian times families picked daffodils from their gardens and took them to local hospitals to give to the sick. Hop Monday (5th 2010). Hops were introduced into England in the first quarter of the 16th century by Flemish immigrants. The first English book written about hop growing by Reynolds Scot, was published in 1574. It recommends that poles be erected in the spring as soon as the hops are above the ground. Primrose Day. When Benjamin Disreali (Lord Beaconsfield) died on April 19th, 1881 Queen Victoria sent two floral wreaths of primroses to be placed on his coffin with a note saying, “His favourite flowers.” Primrose Day sprang from this simple gesture and for many years to follow, the English celebrated by decorating their homes with the flower and gentlemen wearing the petals on their lapels.

GENERAL ENQUIRIES 678 490 235 MARTHA white short-haired female

Martha came into our care when she was found thin and hungry crying outside a restaurant hoping for a morsel of food. She was very approachable and just so grateful that someone came along to help her. She instantly fell in love with her posh mouse bed, finally a warm place to camp down! Once she realised she was in safe hands where no-one was going to harm her, she instantly settled down and the small wound on her nose (which she came in with) is healing nicely. She does not seem at all interested in roaming and her idea of a good time is leaving the comfort of her bed for some serious tummy rubbing and nose-nuzzles. She would suit someone who wants a companion and loves stroking cats! For further information on MARTHA please contact ... Diane 664 246 728 Ruth 637 817 982 Tracy 649 237 582

BELLA short-haired tabby, approx.

BELLA was discovered in February in the area of Mojácar Pueblo - she was looking for something to eat, going from one terrace of a bar to another until a kind lady gave her some food and realized she was a domestic cat. Upon asking the owners of the bars and Spanish women who live in that area, they informed her that this cat didn't have a home and at night she tried to get inside the houses to keep out of the rain. So we do not know much about BELLA’s history. She is a brown mackerel tabby, a girl who enjoys attention on her own terms so will never be in your face, quite happy to live in your home, share your life but an independent girl, happy to be left to her own devices. For further information on BELLA please contact ... Diane 664 246 728 Ruth 637 817 982 Tracy 649 237 582

“Farmer Rory” and I went out on “Captain (Brian) Cuba” Garrucha moored boat and though it was a slow start we did catch some good fish. Only three different species which was unexpected considering the time of year but some of the biggest Combers I’ve ever seen. They are of the grouper family and are the ones that have to have their swim bladders pricked with a hook before releasing. Most then are able to swim down rather than floating on the surface and being eaten by a seagull or flying sea rat as I sometimes call them. We also caught blue mouths and pandoras and again, the latter some of the biggest I’ve seen landed, shame they are so bony. A few of us are hoping to go out again with Brian this coming weekend, weather permitting we will make the 20 mile trip offshore to where big shoals of pelagics will be heading up the Med. The Med’s dwindling stocks of blue fin tuna will be there and if I catch a decent one it will be kiss and release.

“Baza Barry” fished a Murcia lake and caught carp to 4lbs and barbel to 2lbs. Some anglers reported that Argos Lake is fishing well and decent bags are being caught although the water is high and swims scarce. The spring equinox and March’s new moon didn’t live up to expectations of great shore fishing except in the new part of the Garrucha marina where bucket loads of doradas or guilt head bream are being caught. “London Bill” did well using razor clam meat and also caught a couple of sea bass spinning in the same spot. You can get away with fishing between the security fence and the wall belonging to the restaurant. Best mark seems to be next to the wall where there are a couple of boats moored. Fishing is not really allowed but nobody seems to be bothering at the moment. My mate Owen who I have fished with in South Africa twice now has a website and he’s put a photo of me and my 200lb Ragged Toothed shark on the front page. I’m also proud to be shown a few times in the gallery too.

http://www.wildcoastanglingtours.co.za I hope to go on a fishing trip to SA again in October of this year or if not then April 2011. If anyone is up for making up the numbers to four then let me know and we can discuss it. Off the top of my head flights from the UK are about £880 return and is about £100 a day for the all inclusive package of fishing, from the beach, rocks and boat with good

Someone once said to me “What eats a 200lb shark?” Easy, a 400lb shark. “Paul The Boat’s” fishing boat which is about 18 feet is for sale and comes with a berth in Garrucha Marina that could be worth more than the boat, see me for more details. QROPS

REMOVALS & STORAGE

(Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme) QROPS seems to be a very misunderstood subject, where in fact it is quite simple. Many ex-pats are aware that this is available but are not familiar with how it works and who to contact. I have spoken to many people who have contacted their pension providers in the UK and have been told that they can do nothing until their selected retirement age. As far as you being resident in the UK that is correct, you may draw benefits from age 50; this is due to change to age 55 in April 2010. So, we all think that nothing can be done, wrong! Please read on. In April 2006 the British Government passed legislation saying “that any British person living outside the UK, or is intending to do so, is eligible to transfer their whole pension fund tax free via a “QROPS”. As long as you are between the ages of 18 and 75, and subject to other criteria, you may draw full benefits prior to your selected retirement age. All pensions are designed to give you an income in retirement; it is as simple as that, however some pension funds of £25,000 for example, would not provide sufficient income for a family to live on. Because all fund sizes and benefits may be different, each client should be treated on an individual basis. It may be the case that to take benefits early would not be the correct solution, for example certain Government pensions with guaranteed annuity rates may be best left alone. Most QROPS providers will offer the same benefits as you would receive by leaving your pension where it is i.e. 25% tax free cash and an income for life that would be taxed. In my opinion, the only benefit of doing this would be to receive your benefits early and you would have to pay for the privilege. As there are in excess of 6,000 QROPS providers available, which one do you choose to maximise the benefits you receive? In summary, “anyone aged between 18 and 75 years of age who is living outside the UK and has a frozen personal or company pension in the UK is eligible to transfer their whole pension fund, tax free; via QROPS” (the state pension cannot be done).
