elcome to August and congratulations to Spain on winning the world cup. And though I’m not really a football fan even I was cheering silently. My sigh of relief however, with the end of the endless football coverage was quickly sucked back in again when I learned that the start of the Premiership was not far away. Movieland, here I come! So, what’s in store for this issue? Sol-aero are back, Moonstone are re-energising your mind, body and soul with crystal therapy and Alkemí holistic centre explains how they can make you feel better in five minutes with their advanced reflexology treatments. There’s also Petter’s petty pennings, the Navigator and Movieland to catch up with. Then, when you’ve
read all that, you can while away the hot afternoons by testing your knowledge with my summer themed quiz. As always, thanks to everyone who has sent items and photos for inclusion and special thanks to Ian and Petter for fulfilling my photographic missions and for capturing the impromptu photographs along the way. And last but not least, August’s gemstone is Peridot and the flower is Gladiolus. Until next month Tracey

A RIDDLE This is an unusual paragraph. I'm curious as to just how quickly you can find out what is so unusual about it. It looks so ordinary and plain that you would think nothing was wrong with it. In fact, nothing is wrong with it! It is highly unusual though. Study it and think about it, but you still may not find anything odd. But if you work at it a bit, you might find out. Try to do so without any coaching! Answer:
The letter e, which is the most common letter used in the English language, does not appear even once in the paragraph.

Well, whilst us expats take advantage of the Mediterranean diet the Spanish have gotten the taste for Fish & Chips. Zak’s in Garrucha said that the majority of his customers in the last few weeks have been Spanish. Rather apt as this year is the 150th anniversary of the marriage of Fish & Chips. Its humble beginnings are not really known but we do know that the French invented chips or “chipped pommes de terre a la mode”, and in 1839 Charles Dickens referred to a “fried fish warehouse” in Oliver Twist. The great British fish and chip trade grew out of these existing small businesses which sold fish and chips separately in the streets and alleys of London and some of Britain’s industrial towns in the 1850s. Both Lancashire and London stake a claim to the origin of this famous meal. Chips were the staple fare of the industrial north whilst fried fish was introduced in London’s East.

Trase Shayne Holmes and Russell Keith Parsons held a blessing attended by 31 guests on Thursday 15th July. Only Trase’s mother Hilary and step father Don (on the right) were local. Everybody else came out from England for the occasion. The blessing was performed by Shelley, a UK registered registrar of marriages, and a personal friend of Trase, who also happened to be the lady who officiated at the wedding of Trase’s mother, Hilary, to Don.

Now, I just ain’t Spanish enough to know if that is a perfect translation but I would think twice about shouting it at the natives especially if they were big or armed. I waved my white flag at this point. After all, who is the Navigator to take on the might of Google. I decided I had tested the device, not beyond its means but certainly way beyond mine. It is a good website and I would go as far to say it is an essential one. Go and try it. www.translate.google.com When I am not dueling with Google I sometimes like to relax over a few glasses of Rioja and a game of chess but finding an opponent with a grasp of the game that is inferior to mine has always proved difficult. I’m not competitive but I do like at least a glimpse of victory now and again. I decided to broaden my search for an opponent that I might be able to beat.

www.shakespeareinsults.com which you may remember is a mahussive compendium of all of Big Willie’s nasty retorts and snappy comebacks. I started copying and pasting some of the more complex of big bad Willie’s ferocious one-liners into Google’s machine and it chewed them up and spat them back at me in what seemed to me, perfect Spanish. At the very least it was Spanish of a standard adequate to insult people in a sixteenth century play write kind of way, which to me is a higher standard than anyone I’ve ever met. Google was winning. Here is an example of the state of play at this point in our skirmishing; I typed in this Shakespearean insult; Thou whoreson mandrake, thou art fitter to be worn in my cap than to wait at my heels. he other day a geezer I know told me about a splendid feature that Google have added to their burgeoning range of essential tools. You can find it at: www.translate.google.com It is a very simple translating device and you work it by simply selecting the languages you would like to transpose (there are dozens to choose from) and then typing the word you want translated into the little text box. After this a click of your mouse will tell you what you need to know. www.translate.google.com even has a sound feature so you can hear the word being pronounced. This tool is an absolute must for anyone wishing to learn Spanish to the point where they can actually integrate into Spanish society and not just stop learning at the point where the waiter understands that you want a

“lager and red wine paw vafor”. Anyone that’s ever worked with these types of translating websites before will know that they regularly chuck a big fat greasy spanner into your work and you have to be very thorough in checking what you have done. I decided to perform a stress test on Google’s new feature and I started by trying out some complicated sentences. It coped admirably so I took things up a notch and fed it some of William Blake’s verse; Never seek to tell thy love. Love that never told can be; For the gentle wind does move, silently, invisibly. This is what Google sent back ... No tratan de hablar de amor, de amor que nunca le dijo puede ser por igual que el viento sopla silencio invisible Now, I’m no expert but that seems to be a pretty good interpretation to me. I was impressed. Impressed but riled. I wanted to beat the machine. I rolled up my sleeves, tilted my hat to a jaunty angle, puffed up my chest and I dug out a website I wrote about some months ago.

possible courses of action your enemy might make. It also affords you time to notice the short falls in the game. I mean why do all those pawns run off and slaughter other pawns while the Kings and Queens lounge around doing nothing? I sometimes wonder why the pawns don’t unite, maybe talk a couple of rooks into joining up and make the whole board a republic in less than a dozen moves. If Philippe starts to look as though he may beat me I will suggest a truce and an instant peasant revolt, the French love them. At last I found a game I might not lose. Don’t forget to tell us about anything good you find out there on the www. You can do so at advertisernavigator@msn.com Bye El Navegador.

I found a really good and easy to use website that not only provides the opportunity to play chess on line but hundreds of other board games too. www.itsyourturn.com is the addy of the thing and it is free and very easy to use. I don’t know if my quest for victory has proved fruitful yet but I am currently half way through a game with a fella called Philippe who lives in Tours, France. You have a lot of options on this site and if you are interested at all I think it better you go and explore it than I try to explain it all now. One feature I really liked is that you can play in “real time” or submit moves on a daily or tri-daily basis. This feature means that you are informed by email (with a link) that it is your turn to move. This breathing space between moves gives you time to really study the board and plan ahead whilst anticipating, with any luck, all the

Dear Members We have been running Harmony Gym now for nearly eight years. In that time we have seen literally thousands of people through our doors. Training, getting and keeping fit, having massages and treatments and generally, in most cases, feeling better for it. Mojácar is a wonderful place and we would like to think that somehow Harmony Gym has added something to it. We have had countless open days, fun runs, bike rides, visits from Father Christmas, even a wedding. It is with a heavy heart that we have decided to sell Harmony Gym, soon to be renamed Indigo Gym as we have new and different things we wish to pursue. However, we would like to announce that Grant and Claire will be taking over the reigns. They have great plans and enthusiasm for this place and we wish them all the best. I will still be running all my therapies and training courses from there so you know where to find me. Also concentrating on my teaching. I will be available on the same number 950 475 403, just ensure you ask for your appointment with Jackie, or you can call me directly on 634 331 798. Thanks to everyone of you for your great support over the years. We will still both be around, along with our daughters Lily and Ruby, and would like to wish everyone well. Thanks to everyone that has ever worked for us or come through our doors for whatever reason.
Keep on keeping on! Jackie & Jegs

In the UK last month, I got to fly a piece of history. A 1942 Miles Messenger. After a brilliant landing, if I say so myself, I found myself surrounded by fellow airmen admiring the aircraft. There I was, amongst my peers, but feeling familiar pangs of discomfort and inferiority! These guys were dressed in full flying suits, airline pilot outfits, one even had a ‘Captain X’ badge on his shirt! They scratched their inflated heads wondering what the oik in jeans was doing flying the Messenger and destroying their even more inflated image! ‘Learning to fly old chap?’ enquired Captain X. ‘Actually I instruct’ I replied. Oh no! Suddenly the oik had credentials! Then I added ‘on Microlights’. Sighs of relief! Suddenly their contempt was justified, I was one of those microlighters, not a ‘real’ pilot! The usual comments followed ‘how does it feel flying a proper aircraft?’ or ‘they don’t make them like that anymore!’ So how did it feel? Well, bloody easy actually! The Messenger is so heavy that it isn’t really affected by wind shear and thermals, leave about 20% power on and it lands itself! Unlike my M1, which needs constant pilot input. The Messenger has 2 seats, like my M1. It cruises at about 80Kts, like my M1. It needs a 500m takeoff roll, my M1 needs 200. It burns 40lts per hour, my M1 sips 15. And in an emergency! My M1 glides like an eagle, the Messenger glides like Ann Widdicombe!! It was nice to fly a piece of nostalgia but I’m glad that they don’t make them like that anymore! I see this snobbery all the time in aviation. These guys all fly club

Cessnas, so why the pretensions, and why such loathing of the Microlight? I’ll tell you why! During the war, the RAF came up with a training syllabus that produced competent pilots quickly. Men with a handful of hours were thrown into combat situations and rightly became heroes, but this should surely be for their bravery under fire and not simply for being pilots? Nonetheless, the pilot’s godlike image persisted, but is being eroded as aviation becomes cheaper and more accessible. Due, almost entirely, to the microlight. People are realizing that flying is no more difficult than driving, they see behind the flightsuit, the flyer is losing his hero status, and he doesn’t like it! Microlighters have blown his cover! The RAF syllabus remains virtually unchanged, used by general aviation and microlighting alike, it is ‘flying by numbers’ and it works. But it has flaws. Any deviation from ‘the numbers’ is discouraged, as is flair, originality, and FUN!! The microlight world tries to inject these ingredients into flight training. We have learned from General aviation, maybe it is time they learned from us? The Spanish Air Force send their cadets to train for their microlight licence. They realize its value. What if the RAF did the same? The playing field would be level, and we could stop fighting amongst ourselves. Wouldn’t that be good! Today’s micropilot is tomorrow’s airline pilot, fighter pilot, and, sadly, the hero who may give his life in defence of his country.

it is clear that the full potential of crystals has still not been fully explored. This unique and deeply relaxing, calming treatment, includes massage of the back, shoulders, neck and facial area using wonderful heated specially selected crystal palm stones such as Hematite, Jasper, Carnelian, Tigers Eye, Jade, Rose Quartz and Amethyst. Just imagine beautiful, smooth polished crystal stones gliding over your back, neck, shoulders & face like silk caressing your skin while the natural energies of the crystals create inner peace and balance in your mind and body. A full facial treatment can be included using a facemask and skin products to suit your skin type. Whilst the facemask is on the selected crystals are positioned on and around the body to heal and balance your whole being, leaving you to meditate in a state of calm and total relaxation. Reiki healing can also be added in at this stage to increase and amplify the healing effect producing a state of deep relaxation. Each crystal has different energy vibrations and properties to heal, relieve stress and tension and rebalance the body’s energy field (Aura) and energy centres (Chakras) to help maintain the natural balance of the body and the flow of energy. Our Chakras and our energy field, which surrounds our body, affect our whole body and our health. They have been recognised for thousands of years as being essential to our well-being. It has been found that if these have any weaknesses or are out of balance it can manifest as physical or emotional health problems. The selected crystal colours and Repsol fuel station

Summer is well underway and in this heat we have no choice but to do a bit more relaxing and chilling out. What better way to do it than to treat yourself (or even let someone else treat you!) to a wondrous relaxing and re-energising ‘Crystal Healing massage and facial’. Crystal Therapy is the ultimate treatment and uses a holistic approach combining Crystal and Reiki healing, Chakra (energy centre) balancing, along with Massage and a full Facial Treatment – a treatment mask can also be included. This treatment brings the benefits of Crystals and essential oils together in harmony to enhance their balancing and relaxing effects further. It is a great treatment for men too and if preferred the facial treatment can be omitted allowing more time for the massage and healing aspects of the treatment. Crystals have been used throughout history, they link all civilizations across space and time, the first reference of healing comes from the Egyptians and centuries later the metallic content of minerals was claimed to have curative powers. A more scientific explanation for crystal healing was demanded, vibrations from the inner structure of the crystals connected with vibrations sent out by the human mind were investigated through rigorous studies and this was felt to be the nature of the interaction between crystals and ourselves. It’s also worth remembering that silicon chips and quartz (crystal) are used today in computers and many other hi-tech electrical items and

“Feel better in five minutes” Advanced Reflexology Treatments for chronic and acute health problems. When reflexology is mentioned people tend to think only of the feet. Often they do not realise that the hands can be as important and have as many reflexes. It is a shame that reflexologists spend little time learning about Hand Reflexology during their training. The same reflexes on the feet can be located on the hands, although there are anatomical differences in shape and size. The hands are not as physically sensitive as the feet, although they are much more accessible, but the reflexes do have the same energetic response as the feet. What is Synergistic Reflexology? Synergistic reflexology turns up the power of the bodies own healing by simultaneously working two corresponding reflexes – one on the hand and one on the foot. The impact of working two identical reflexes at the same time produces a much more effective result than working on the two reflexes separately. The word “Synergy” means the increased effect achieved by having two factors working in co-operation. The aim of working two reflexes together synergistically is to help channel extra healing energy towards a particular organ, limb or gland. Vertical Reflexology Treatment VRT works well on its own as a brief four or five minute treatment, but ideally it should be incorporated into the start and the finish of a conventional session. VRT is now considered by many reflexologists to be an essential additional skill, and an advanced reflexologist will be able to incorporate it into their general treatments. Five

minutes of VRT before or after a treatment is all that is needed to achieve positive results. VRT for chronic and acute problems Chronic illnesses The word “chronic” can describe an illness that is possibly fatal, but can also be applied to a long term degenerative illness such as arthritis. Asthma sufferers have a chronic illness even if they manage it well with medication. So “chronic” can refer to a spectrum of complaints such as catarrh or sinusitis – in fact any illness that does not go away. If someone has had a health problem for a long time it will not usually respond immediately to medication or complementary therapies. And a series of treatments may be needed. Acute problems The term “acute” can refer to a common cold, a twisted ankle or an upset stomach due to over indulgence – in fact any complaint that comes on suddenly and is not expected to last any length of time. In acute cases, such as a cold or even childbirth (which is of course a condition rather than an illness), it is very effective to give VRT at least twice a day to stimulate the immune system to heal and balance the body. This self-help technique can be used up to five times a day for a minute or two with great success. A competent VRT reflexologist will be able to teach you this simple technique and help you to feel better in just five minutes. If you have any health questions or concerns call 950 132 342 or you can e-mail info@alkemiholistics.com PAGE 15

RINTY. DOB 20/11/08. Vaccinated & Neutered. Rinty was found in the campo being used as a football by some teenagers. After having spent most of his early life in kennels, he went to a foster home. Although he seemed to settle he is still frightened of his fosterer’s teenage sons and spends most of the day under the bed where he feels safe, which is not good. Now 3 months on things have not improved, we need to get him into another home without teenagers, where he can live a normal life. We don’t want to send him back to the kennels. If you can give Rinty a permanent or foster home please phone Diane on 664 768 958 or e-mail: diane@puppyrescueinspain.org If you can give any of our dogs a good foster or permanent home please ring 667 623 254 PAGE 20

Bar La Montana Hippie Night
It was a very good evening with everyone joining in and resurrecting the mood and spirit of the 70s. People who are normally quiet and shy went quite mad with their outfits, dancing and outrageous behaviour! The food was delicious, the beer and wine flowed, and the phrase "Peace on you" was heard more and more frequently as the night progressed! Four people shared the prize for best-dressed dancer, but only one was awarded the much sought after certificate. A wonderful night, and with coach transport to Montaña and back, not a single mishap with regard to getting home. Do it again, soon!!!.

The pitter patter of petty pennings
Well done Spain. It can now claim the football world crown for the next four years. My wife's parting shot on the subject, bearing in mind the performance of the US military, was her surprise that the USA team never managed to score even one own goal! On the subject of "footie", who needs tinnitus? You can get an even better buzz with massed vuvuzelas! Used car prices have always been a bit of a mystery to me. Once a car is ten years old, it is well out of any guarantees. It qualifies for any scrappage schemes available and is obviously not as reliable, shiny and smooth running as when it was new. So I would expect a seven year old car to be worth, at most, a third of its new price - and more probably a quarter. Indeed, I do often see three year old cars that cost 16 to 17 thousand when new, being offered for sale at 9 thousand. So why the anomalies? What is it that justifies a car, with only 3 years of life left before it qualifies theoretically for the scrap heap, to merit a substantial 5 figure asking price? I'm obviously missing something! Talking of prices, remember the shop in Tabernas called "Pens and Things"? It stocked a huge selection of curtains at only 5 euros a pair and we bought a great many for our son when he moved into his new home in Banstead last year. Because our daughter is soon moving house we thought, at that price, we could also get her some curtains so that her family would have instant window coverings until they got round to deciding on the decor they really wanted. Unfortunately we discovered that "Pens and Things" had closed in January this year due to a family bereavement. We asked the shoe shop opposite what had happened and were told that Jan, the lady who ran Pens and Things was now at a cafe restaurant called "The Road House". It is on the old N340, on the right, shortly before reaching the town of Tabernas. We popped in and, sure enough, there was Jan. We had a coffee and a pleasant chat and Jan arranged to meet us a couple of days later to take us to her store where she still had a large stock of curtains. What's more, the price has come down, especially if you buy a few pairs. We bought 18 pairs and PAGE 24
paid 2.50 a pair! So if you are in the market for some extremely underpriced curtains (she doesn't have any of the really long ones left) contact Jan at The Road House. Jan also takes a selection of curtains to the Road House rastro, which is held on alternate Sundays. The next ones should be on the 8th and 22nd August. However, I suggest you ring to confirm the dates, or to talk to Jan before you go down there the number is 950 066 007. Pandering to his concept of parabiosis, Mojacar's piliferous playboy, Major Tom, is now away on his paphian annual pilgrimage. His peregrination will see him, with much panache, permeate the broads of France, England, Ireland, Scotland and then Thailand, in that order. Meanwhile Tom's pal, 'Pete the Pilgarlic', alias Mojรกcar's well known socialite, the Bald Eagle, will remain and peruse the pretties, as they parade provocatively on the paseo, 'ere he propounds to them the pleasures of a pampering in his palliasse strewn palaestra. (If you're not familiar with all of the "p" words in the last two snippets of persiflage I suggest that you, as I did, refer to a dictionary please!) Here are some more "p" words. A "precisian" is someone who is rigidly precise or punctilious, especially in religious matters. "Paynim", another obscure "p" word, means a non-Christian, such as a pagan, but is especially taken to mean a Muslim. "Pinguid" meaning, fat, oily or greasy, is usually used in a jocular manner. Then there's "parturient", meaning "about to give birth". Thus, a "pinguid, parturient pilgarlic" would mean a greasy, bald headed person in the final stage of pregnancy. There is a plethora of "p" words in the dictionary. Maybe we should have a competition for the best compilations of obscure "p" words in the same sentence, for printing in the autumn. All words beginning with the letter "p" that appear in the Concise Oxford English dictionary would qualify - have fun! I still have over 100 tea bags (enough for half a month or so) left over from the magnificent retirement present of a year's supply of them that I received just over a year ago from GBs, (Mr UK). It was a parting gift and was meant to be presented to me at the big party in Bar Med, organised in my honour by Carol. The party never took place, because that same night Mojรกcar and Turre caught fire! Anyway, thanks, Alan and Colin. Or was it a sneaky way of
making sure I bought lots of Cravendale milk and Tate and Lyle sugar from your shop? Talking of fire - this is Southern Spain, a land noted for its fiery and rhythmic musical heritage. So why do so few places play Spanish music? One day last week we were eventually driven out of a local beach bar when we could no longer tolerate what I can only describe as "Mills and Boon" music. How can I explain? Like the stories in the M&B books, this music seems to be produced according to a fixed formula that uses a synthesiser to produce an uncomplicated, repetitive, headbanging rhythm in 2 - 2 time and then adds in a series of uninspiring notes from one or two instruments. Such "Mills & Boon" music might be fit for a late night disco populated by alcohol addled revellers, reeling in semi-syncopation with the beat; but surely not at midday in a cafe or beach bar? How about airing a few fiery guitars and paso dobles? As we all know, the most effective way to lose weight is to eat less, but the cravings of appetite often overcome will power. Anyway, last month I was idly browsing the BBC web site and came across a link to something called a "satiety index" (pronounced sat - eye - it - ee) developed by an Australian, Dr. Susanna Holt, and her associates at the University of Sydney. Basically this Sheila measured how sated one feels after eating various foods by feeding 240-calorie portions of them to volunteers. She minimized the influence of appearance and served similar sized chunks at the same temperature as much as possible. The volunteers then said how hungry they still felt, but they were not allowed to eat anything more for two hours. After this they were given access to a small buffet, and for the following two hours researchers closely monitored what they ate, questioning them every quarter of an hour about their feelings of hunger, and double checking by observing how much they actually ate from the buffet. The result was compiled into a satiety index table, which rates everything against white bread (100%), in such a way that foods scoring higher than 100% are better at satisfying hunger and vice versa. The least long-time-hunger assuaging score, at less than half the rating for white bread, went to croissants (47%). Potatoes, when served as chips, were only slightly better than white bread and not nearly as enduring as wholemeal bread, which scored half as much again.

However, plain boiled spuds gained a rating of three and a quarter times better, and came top of the list (327%). Porridge and whole oranges (but not orange juice) scored just over 200% with apples close behind. Good news for carnivores is that lean beef scored 176%. Surprisingly, muesli and "Special K" ranked very low, almost on a par with eating plain white bread. You can read Dr. Holt's full table on the following web site: http://www.diabetesnet.com/ diabetes_food_diet/ satiety_index.php I had a well tailored pair of shorts, in which the zip had gone awry. Other than that they were in good condition, so I was loth to throw them away. The missus mentioned she had noticed a place in the multi-centre next door to Mercadona that offered clothing repairs, so we took them in and asked what it would cost to replace the zip. The very pleasant young lady there said it would cost 8 euros and would take two days, and she took our phone number. The lady called us the very next day to say they were ready! The work was neat, the zip runs perfectly and I really must tell you all how pleased I was with the job. Talking of jobs, as far as I know, the UK's minimum wage is the third highest in the European Union, beaten only by Ireland and Luxembourg, and is roughly double the minimum wage in the USA. No wonder most small businesses in UK don't want to employ staff they'd go broke! Anyone in this neck of the woods earning 1,200 euros a month for basic skills work reckons he is being well paid.

“UNTIL THERE ARE NONE ... RESCUE ONE”

Which brings me to Britain's budget. It certainly put the emphasis on austerity. We've heard all the pundits from every viewpoint of politics give their opinion, but not one of them seems to have picked up on the following aspect, which to my machiavelian mind was deliberately engineered. Here goes: VAT is being raised from 17.5% to become 20%, which my schoolboy maths calculates as an actual increase of 2.1%. on most purchases. (Everyday essentials, like basic groceries as opposed to a frozen "ready-meal", remain unchanged at 5%.) To ameliorate the effect of the VAT increase on the lower paid, the chancellor raised the income tax threshold by £1,000. This I calculate as an improvement of 2.5 % for wage earners at the bottom of the tax scale. So in actual fact somebody pulling in only £700 a month, from part time work for example, is actually financially better off than before the budget. The improvement slowly tails off the more one earns, dying out at around £5,000 a month. Now comes the cunning bit no one mentioned: If you do not earn a wage, then raising the tax threshold will obviously do nothing for you! Therefore, because VAT is paid by everyone, many of the folk milking benefits are 2.1% worse off than before. What a cunning, devious scheme to reduce the effect of the so called "poverty trap" that inspires many people to stay on the dole. I welcome your comments! Whilst on the subject of government, may I make the observation that a major shortcoming of non-secular (i.e. religious) governments is that they allow no distinction between what should be regarded as illegal and what should be treated as merely illicit? Executing a murderer, who bore hatred for another person, may be regarded as justice - but it is not justice to execute someone who bore only love, albeit illicit, towards another. Perhaps such a drastic punishment was originally touted as a way to slow the spread of sexually transmitted infections! After all, the creeds of hot, arid lands, where the fuel needed to cook food thoroughly tends to be scarce, give pork a "despicable" rating. Each year, in the late summer edition of Talismán magazine I used to print sensible, advisory warnings to motorists. Here are a couple of important ones that people don't often think about. A large percentage of holidaymakers come from Britain or Ireland. They are on holiday, therefore relaxed and unwary, possibly a little merry, and operating on "auto-pilot". When they get to a
road they look right, see nothing coming, and step out - right in front of a car approaching from their left! That is why one should be extra wary when driving along the sea front in an area with beach bars, such as near El Cantal, or past the Pueblo Indalo and Hotel Indalo strips. The next piece of advice is probably more appropriate for September, but on the grounds that it can sometimes become appropriate for the end of August it is worth mentioning in this edition:- Our heavy summer traffic leaves a thin film of rubber and oil sticking to road surfaces. Because it is immediately dried out by the sun, this invisible film actually improves tyre cohesion. However, when the first rains fall, usually in late September, this same film becomes semi-liquid and very slippery, but remains invisible, causing many an unwary motorist to skid. Not until heavy rain has washed it away is it safe to trust your tyres when accelerating, braking or negotiating corners. Indeed, in some years it has been responsible for road deaths. On the subject of cars, as any motorist will appreciate, if there is a car behind you it is very dangerous to stop when you are half-way through exiting from a roundabout. That is why pedestrian crossings are placed about two car lengths away from roundabouts rather than right at them. Pedestrians who take a short-cut, crossing the road right at the roundabout exit instead on the crossing, can cause collisions if a car has to stop unexpectedly to avoid running them over. Please think when you are walking, and take the extra few steps to the crossing. Sitting in Chiringuito Los Arcos one Friday lunchtime, enjoying the goodly company of old timers, "Doctor John" contributed this wonderful snippet. "I never come home really drunk," said he, "Because when you're really drunk you can't find your way home." Towards the end of June we were having a caffeine fix in cafe Los Arcos when my friend, Ric, asked us if we knew the scientific name for "no-see-ums" alias "flying teeth". They are so small that they don't so much fly as swim through the air. Consequently they do not have as great a flying range as mosquitoes - except that they can get blown for miles by the wind. They can also pass through all but the finest mosquito netting. Apparently Ric had been inspired to ask the question of us because another friend of ours, the local thespian Val Pearson, had asked him for information about them. We didn't know their real name but, intrigued, when we got home we used "Ask" to browse the subject on the net. We soon found the name and e-mailed a couple of URLs to Ric, but further

Their bite usually results in little more than an itchy spot, but it can have far worse consequences! One of the nasties they carry around is the heartworm and its variants. These nematode worms, which thrive in warm weather, mostly infect dogs and, after going through various stages, end up as one or more worms, up to 25 centimetres long and 1.5 mm in diameter, living in the upper left ventricle. One common variant, Dirofilaria Repens, also infects other mammals. It even infects an estimated 4% of humans in Spain
overall (more in warmer areas) and an estimated quarter of the population in Southern Italy. Fortunately for us, it is unable in humans to progress to the heart stage of its life-cycle. Nevertheless, the immature worms can survive and grow just under the skin, giving rise to small, often weeping sores. They can also infect the lungs and certain non-internal organs, such as the eye, the breast and the testicles. And on that happy note I'll leave you to rush, scratching furiously, to the nearest purveyor of extra fine mesh door and window screens. Cheers, Petter

Letter to the Editor Dear Editor I wonder if I could task you with something, that I think fellow residents may appreciate also knowing? I recently observed that the fresh fish we purchase in Mercadona comes from Venezuela, and other such far away places. Also that the fruit and vegetables that I purchase from here and other supermarkets come from South America, France and the like. I was appalled to think that we live in such a bountiful country, but may be inadvertently buying foreign produce. Would you be able to ascertain whether the fruit and veg from the stalls on the local street markets is local (I generally understand the smaller stalls are definitely local produce); and also where you would buy guaranteed local Spanish fish? I can only think of the covered fish market in Garrucha - and even not sure about this. If anyone can answer Judith’s Keep up the good work questions please e-mail me on: Regards advertisermojacar@gmail.com Judith Howey and I will pass it on. Thanks. Ed.

Ha! Ha! A woman goes into Discount Fishing Supplies to buy a rod and reel for her grandson's birthday. She doesn't know which one to get, so she just picks one and goes over to the counter. The salesman is standing there, wearing dark shades. She says, "Excuse me. Can you tell me anything about this rod and reel?" He says, "Madam, I'm completely blind; but if you'll drop it on the counter, I can tell you everything you need to know about it from the sound it makes." She doesn't believe him but drops it on the counter anyway. He says, "That's a six-foot Shakespeare graphite rod with a Zebco 404 reel and 10-lb.Test line. It's a good all around combination, and it's actually on sale this week for $44." She says, "That's amazing that you can tell all that, just by the sound of it dropping on the counter. I'll take it!" As she opens her purse, her credit card drops on the floor. "Oh, that sounds like a Visa card," he says. As the lady bends down to pick up the card, she accidentally breaks wind. At first she's really embarrassed, but then realises there is no way the blind salesman would tell exactly who had done it. The man rings up the sale and says, "That'll be $58.50 please." The woman is totally confused by this and asks, "Didn't you tell me it was on sale for $44. How did you get $58.50?"

It's 1954, and up-and-coming U.S. marshal Teddy Daniels is assigned to investigate the disappearance of a patient from Boston's Shutter Island Ashecliffe Hospital. He's been pushing for an assignment on the island for personal reasons, but before long he wonders whether he hasn't been brought there as part of a twisted plot by hospital doctors whose radical treatments range from unethical to illegal to downright sinister. Teddy's shrewd investigating skills soon provide a promising lead, but the hospital refuses him access to records he suspects would break the case wide open. As a hurricane cuts off communication with the mainland, more dangerous criminals "escape" in the confusion, and the puzzling, improbable clues multiply, Teddy begins to doubt everything - his memory, his partner, even his own sanity.

A SUCCESS STORY – Bill Campbell and his wife were swept away in their car by the January floods at La Paratá. Here is the sequel … Here is a photo showing the Suzuki after its reconstruction by Diego Caparrós and his team of mechanics at the Peugeot garage Mojácar Motors, when they returned it to me on Friday 11th June. When the flood carried us away, the car was swept down backwards, but it stayed upright, and I managed to get out, thanks to a neighbour who held out a tree branch for me to grab. Even then I was knocked over by the current, and had to flounder to the bank below the road. It was clear that my wife María Angeles could not leave the car that way, and after I had left it, the car was swept off again with her inside it. I had to run down to keep up with it, and was very relieved when it eventually lodged firmly about 100 metres down from the rambla crossing. Although the car was only a few feet away from the bank on the Paratá side, the bank there is so steep that María Angeles could not climb onto it. She had to wait in the car, up to her waist in water, until the firemen arrived and managed to get her out and up the bank. They had to carry her back to the road on a stretcher through the flood water, although this was by now starting to subside. We were sent by ambulance to Urgencias, where they dried us out, and then took us to a friend's house in Garrucha, as it was still impossible to get into La Paratá. A few hours later, when the road was open, a neighbour came to take us home. In fact, we had suffered no injury and did not even catch a cold. I was able to get down to the car, and salvaged the shopping we had bought earlier that morning, car documents and other odds and ends. I could see that the tyres were all flat, and the car was inches deep in mud and water. Next day, the MAPRE crane came and pulled it out of the rambla with remarkable skill, and took it to Mojácar Motors. Diego at first advised me against having it repaired, but when I said that I really wanted the car back and that there was no hurry, he and his men set to work and have done a fantastic job. The engine had been flooded, and the electrics damaged, but it's a sturdy vehicle, and all is now working perfectly. I'd like to pay public tribute to them and give some well-deserved publicity to Mojácar Motors. Bill Campbell

Just heard from “Captain Brian Cuba” who is in the UK, he’s pulling his hair out and has the shakes, says he can’t wait to get back and out fishing. We are missing you too Brian and here’s a photo of three of your mates, me (L) “Admiral Phil” (C) catching a tiny pickerel and “Radio Ham Kevin” (R). Another gorgeous day in paradise. “Captain (Duncan) Sunshine” and “Captain Rory” took out a party of six mates (two boats) who were celebrating Tony’s 70th birthday I hear. They fished in front of the River Abajo and Garrucha Marina. The sea was flat early on but it wasn’t long before the inevitable happened, the wind came up and the anchors were needed. It wasn’t a prolific day by any means and they landed 40 to 50 fish between them but nothing worth mentioning. “Kenolo” fished the beach at Pozo during the week and although he
didn’t catch anything he thinks the mark near La Frontera Restaurant has potential. Ken was able to walk out about 70 yards before being pushed over by waves. He says the bottom is good and he’ll try fishing there again soon. Ken spoke to a holiday maker who had been out on a boat from Garrucha and a lot of salmometes (red mullet) were caught. I’ve only ever seen one caught before and that was by my grandson “Beachcomber H” last year. “London Bill” fished Macenas beach and rocks again this week with mixed results. One day not a bite or take and the next he bagged up. When the fish were behaving themselves he caught sea bass, palomete and Atlantic scad while spinning. Inshore bream such as dorada, cow and striped were caught bottom or float fishing. Meagre were had spinning but only small fish and nowhere near the weight they apparently grow to. Just imagine hooking the equivalent of a 110lb sea bass! Wow. Spinning also captured a couple of decent sea bass weighing about a kilo. (Well it’s good for here!) Popping produced nothing and I think the autumn months will provide better sport. “Baza Barry” fished most of the week at Negratin and even camped out a couple of nights but didn’t fish during the hours of darkness. He and his mates caught shed loads of carp and barbel and at one point were catching

the same fish twice in a matter of minutes. Although I’ve seen it happen before, two fish were caught on one hook. Competition for food was so intense; being caught wasn’t putting fish off feeding. The biggest fish caught was by Barry’s mate John; he landed a 12lb common carp in the early hours before the smaller fish got back into the swim. Barbel were landed to 4lbs and Barry had some small trout and black bass while spinning during quiet spells. Barry would have liked to take his friends to his favourite lake in Murcia but unlike Andalucia (using our loophole) it’s not possible to get Murcia licenses without an NIE document copy. Talking about licenses, beach and boat licenses should be back now
and Andalucian coarse licenses are hopefully going in soon. “Flobalob Pete” has just returned from a few days on the Ebro and caught carp to just over 40lbs. Small cats were also caught but nothing big which was ok because like me he can’t stand the slimy monsters. Checkout Mojácar’s weather and sea conditions here on the Beachcomber’s webcam: www.almeriafreeads.com/ webcam For further information on any of the above or to find out about beach, boat or coarse fishing licenses, see John at the Beachcomber Bar Restaurant on Mojácar Playa or tel: 950 473 099. In case of difficulty reaching me (probably out fishing!) ask staff for my mobile number. Tight Lines Beachcomber John
