From the Editor So here it is then, the Christmas issue, and I am breathing a sigh of relief having had to complete it all on my own with Petter in England pestering his progeny, (his words!). I would like to take this opportunity to announce that I have two new photographers on board, Janine Simone and Ian of Bluwater Web Design, that doesn’t mean you can’t still send in your own, and my new website is now up-and-running at www.advertisermojacar.com. You’ve plenty of Christmas trivia and questions to keep you going and a nice easy crossword that maybe the kids’ can get involved in, thanks to ‘El Stevo’ for that. My sincerest thanks to all the ‘advertisee’s’ who have continued to support me and to the new ones for deciding to. Also
to all those who have sent in their photos and information for inclusion and the contributors of the articles, news and reviews. Last, but not least, to my ‘support group’, Petter for his guidance, assistance and sharing of knowledge and to my friends who wish they weren’t!! (They know who I mean). I hope you all have a fantastic Christmas and a healthy and happy New Year. Stick to those resolutions and I’ll see you next year. PS. Sorry about the Santa hat, but I just couldn’t help myself!

♣I hear that a new bi-lingual radio
station is coming to Mojácar with officially sanctioned frequencies. At the moment that’s all I know. Well done to Ric Polansky. In the largest taurine photo competition in the world (Club Taurino of London) Ric was awarded third prize. He won the event last year. So, you know he is still up there and attending lots of the important corridas. His photos were on display at the offices of Prime Properties, Parque Commercial, if you missed them then visit his website www.torosbravos.es to see his bullfight stuff or www.ricpolansky.com for his scenic and travel photography. They could make nice gifts for Christmas or if you have a particular idea in mind call Jennifer on 607 726 692 to arrange an appointment to look at photos of your choosing or old photos of Spain and Mojácar. An exhibition of art, watercolour, oil and stone work, by Hazel Hutchings and Mary Clark, is being held at Centro de Arte Mirador del Castillo, Mojácar Pueblo until 30th December. Monday to Friday, 10am ‘til 4pm and Saturday, 11am ‘til 2pm. Arriba are having another of their theme nights on Thursday 28th January for which suggestions are invited. Also too, for Mick’s 50, 10th birthday party night in February. Wednesday night is Poker and Games night at Reflections. They have all the old favourites like draughts, doms, connect 4, and more. Captain’s Tapas Bar are to close at the end of December until sometime in the New Year. During this time the kitchen is being refurbished and Jon will be having an operation on his other eye. (I’m sure you will all join me in wishing him a speedy recovery.) When they do re-open there will a new menu and also an a la carte menu on offer. The Fundraiser charity shop in Turre are holding a Christmas Fair on Friday 18th December between 10 am and 2pm. Anyone interested in having a stall, the cost is only 5 euros. All proceeds will go to charity. Gala’s have a couple of new additions to their already extensive

menu. Thursday’s, a special lunch menu for over 60 ‘Grans & Grumps’ for 5 euros and Shoulder of Lamb has been added to their list of speciality dishes. In cahoots with First Call Computer Solutions, if you go to Gala’s on a Saturday lunchtime for a meal or a drink, take your computer with you. Anton will help you install the latest version of security software for FREE. And any day of the week call in to use their free WIFI. Good news for those of you already using ‘voipstunt’ for your free international calls to landline numbers. The company is now offering cheaper calls to mobiles so call into First Call Computer Solutions to get this bargain program installed. If you are looking for somewhere to hold your Christmas party, try Reflections. The venue is free and small buffets can be catered at a reasonable price. Tickets are now on sale for their New Year's Eve Party Extravaganza for 5 euros including buffet. Last year's was a huge success so you'll need to be quick! (Even if you don’t want a party go in anyway just to have a look at the Christmas decorations. Karen always does a fantastic job.) And if you are looking for a last minute Christmas gift, Reflections will be holding their last Christmas Fair on Sunday 20th December from 1pm. There is everything from clothes to accessories, for men, women and kids, make-up, jewellery and toiletries, down to home-made stuffs such as cakes, jams, chutneys, etc. Torre Bahia will be closed on Xmas Eve, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. After that they will be open seven days a week, all through the year, and their menu of

The Irish Rover has some new entertainment going on. Friday nights is a Northern Soul and Motown night and Saturday nights a Karaoke competition, but with a difference, because at the end it changes to ‘Kamikaze Karaoke’. It is hilarious! Every night though the karaoke will be fired up by Tommy McCarthy if you fancy a go. (photos on page 16 & 17) Gee Bees now has a new karaoke competition in the offing called ‘Crooners & Spooners’, for the mature and seasoned vintage voices. The rules are, gentlemen have to be 65 plus, ladies 60 plus. You can be amateurs, ex pro, semi pro, wannabes or has-beens and the entry fee is 5 euros. Anyone wishing to take part and any bars wanting to host any of the heats call Carol on 648 206 997 or email ronfazey1@msn.com. It will again be in aid of MACS. And, so tireless in her efforts, Carol also has an idea for the one after which I’m not going to tell you. You’ll have to watch this space! T
he season of good will and heavy marketing is upon us again so I thought why not see what I can find about Christmas on the internet. What results would you expect to find if you googled “Christmas”? If you are a sceptic, you would expect to find 50 million shopping sites all wanting your festive monies. In this instance, dear reader, you are wrong. You might be reassuringly surprised by the fact that the first thing on google’s list is a link to wikipedia that will inform you in an erudite and text book kind of way what Christmas is really all about. After that entry there are 89 million shopping sites. That is more than the total number of “real” shops in the whole world. I should point out that I arrived at that conclusion by a process of doing no research and employing no scientific process whatsoever but it is probably true. 89 million Christmas online shopping sites, it is staggering. This year’s online shopping spree is expected to ring up about 4,000 pounds a second in the weeks running up to the big day. This figure, all though staggeringly high, only represents about 4% of the total spent at this time of year so 96% of festive shopping is still done in the high street, so the internet still has a lot of room for growth. If you are planning on doing some last minute on-line shopping you should be aware that most of the world’s postal services are clogged at this time of year and dear little Johnny’s xbox just might not arrive
in time. A lot of the sites I have used for online Christmas shopping do have a “cut-off” point for this very reason. If you are looking for a good site to get some last minute gifts then try www.firebox.com. I have never seen such a fantastic range of exciting toys and gadgets. I could see why, at first glance, some might think it was a toy shop for boys but closer inspection will reveal that they really do have something for everyone. Their stock ranges from yoyos to flying cars (real ones). If anyone wants to get me a nice little gift then they should know that I have had my eye on one of Firebox.com Star Wars figure memory sticks. And, I am sure that anyone of a certain age wouldn’t mind finding one of them under the Christmas tree. If you want to do your bit for the environment this Christmas then don’t forget about www.egreetings.com. This is the free web site I told you about last December. It is an excellent way to send greeting/ birthday/Christmas cards online and using this method to send your crimble cards might help to reduce the number of trees that are cut down to make cards. The U.K’s national statistics office claim around 1.7 billion cards are sent around the country for Christmas each year. That works out to about 250,000 trees and perhaps more alarming than that, it is estimated that 66,000 trees pay the ultimate price so that we can use wrapping paper. That’s why I always wrap the gifts I send in aluminium baking foil. It makes them all nice and shiny too. Happy Christmas and a merry new year to you all. If you find anything online that our readers should know about you can tell us at: advertisernavigator@msn.com Bye for now. El Navegador.

We will be closing at the end of December - the kitchen is being refurbished and Jon is having an operation on his other eye. When we re-open in the New Year we will have a new menu as well as a brand new A La Carte menu. We look forward to seeing you then. Elaine and Jon
On the third morning of December I purchased an aerosol can of windscreen de-icer and an ice scraper. That's because a few days previously I had to sit for ages in the car with the heater diverted to the windscreen before I could drive off. No! It's not that cold in Almería province, not even in Chirivel – yet! However, my wife and I are somewhat further north – braving frosty weather in London and pestering our progeny. It's only fair – they pestered us for years. Norfolk lines have an amazingly good value offer for their Dunkirk to Dover ferry service. If you book (and pay for) between 5 and 8

return crossings between now and next Christmas the fare (for a normal car and up to four passengers) is £24 each way, irrespective of when you travel – even during August. The main restrictions are over the Christmas and Easter season, and at weekends during August. You can alter travel dates and times with no penalty, you can start each journey from either France or England and, what's more, you can pass on the trips to friends and family, although we intend to use all the trips for ourselves. Our poor sprogs were horrified to learn that, now we are retired, we intend to drop in so frequently. Serve 'em right for not choosing their parents more carefully. Talking of “sprogs”, since when did another jocular term for children, namely “kids”, become proper, formal English? Are all our descendants suddenly to mature into goats? I'm writing this spiel on a newly acquired Samsung NC 10 netbook. I went browsing in PC World with my son and this machine caught my eye. It's a brilliant little baby with an eight hour battery life and pretensions of grandeur. It can make video calls on Skype and easily used a spreadsheet to update the latest pool league results on to our website. Anyone want to buy my old netbook – c heap? It runs on a compact version of Windows, called CE, and is rather slow, with a small keyboard, but it can browse the web, check your e-mail, write “Word” documents and has an “Excel” spreadsheet. It's yours for ninety quid or 100 euro. Oh well, let's move on to local matters. The mayor of Lorca made
headlines in mid-November when he launched into a vitriolic diatribe against the mayor of Vera, whom he accused of "stealing" the high speed train station from his town of Lorca, claiming that Vera was to get the station simply because many members of the government had holiday homes in the Vera area. He barely stopped short of accusing the mayor of Vera of outright corruption. The fact that Lorca is less than a quarter of the way between Murcia and Almeria, the two major stations for the AVE, does not seem to have occurred to him. I could have understood the diatribe had it come from the mayor of Los Gallardos. His town, being half way and with plenty of suitable, undeveloped land, was originally c hosen for the intermediate station. The Vera / Los Gallardos area is a far better "passenger catchment area" than Lorca anyway, able to pull trade from Huercal Overa, the Almanzora valley, all the Sierra Cabrera towns, and possibly also Sorbas. Even squabbling teenage girls are more open to reason than politicians! (Before my female reader calls me sexist I should point out that teenage boys don't squabble much – they prefer to thump.) In the wee small hours of 18th November an unlit fishing boat, with not even navigation lights, crept into Garruc ha harbour and quietly moored close to a van. Unfortunately for the five people involved in the exercise they were being watched by both the Guardia Civil and the Customs who had received a tip off and the authorities swooped before any of them could get away. The boat and van were both confiscated. In the fishing boat were three and a

half tons of hashish which, the police tell us, equates to some 13 million joints. That's a lot of serious smoke inhalation. Who wants to be in the tobacco business these days? A tribunal in Florida has ordered Philip Morris to indemnify, to the tune of 201 million euros, a certain Cindy Naugle, a 61 year old ex smoker who is confined to a wheel chair due to emphysema. The judge estimated that her medical expenses, past and future have, or will, amount to 37.9 million euros. The rest of the award is to cover costs and punitive damages. Personally I don't know why judges are content with merely awarding damages to smokers. The judges should be charging the tobacco companies with, at minimum, manslaughter - and condemning everybody working for a tobacco company as being an accomplice to manslaughter. And while we're about it, let's also stick the Chancellor of the Exchequer in prison for technically colluding with the distribution of cigarettes.

Provided the resaltos are similar to the existing ones in Mojácar then I don't mind them at all. Let's just hope that nobody gets carried away and starts making them as violent as the resaltos in Garrucha or Turre. I could be wrong, but I seem to recall that about 15 months ago a resident of Almeria city sued his council for damage to the suspension on his car.
Judging by the number of road works I have recently seen at pedestrian crossings, by the time you read this there should be quite a few more "resaltos" along Mojácar Playa. For those of you who don't know what a "resalto" is, I'll give you a clue. Try "sleeping policeman".
The Anglican Church Christmas Fair held at the Puntazo Hotel on Monday 7th December A general view taken early in the morning
A great morning was had by all with all stall holders doing a steady trade. The fair was very successful with over 4,500 Euros being raised for Church Funds and Mission Projects. A great deal of laughter was heard from the donut challenge where contestants had to eat a well sugared donut without licking or cleaning their lips – there were 8 successful challenges.

This is the last edition for two thousand and nine. It also marks the end of long winded names for each year. The next edition will be in January, twenty ten. That's enough erudite tittle-tattle for this edition. I need to leave Tracey some space for all her Christmas and New Year material. The streets and shops of London are awash with Christmas decorations as too, I suspect, are our home towns. I shall be back in Mojácar at the same time as this issue hits the streets – just too late to give Tracey a helping hand with any last minute rush. There's method to my madness! I wish all readers a Happy Christmas and I wish businesses a prosperous New Year. That way they can afford to keep advertising in this illustrious rag. Cheers, Petter.

The Molly Malone Perpetual Quiz Trophy in aid of Asprodalba

From 2004 this annual quiz has raised thousands of euros for Asprodalba. The winning teams represented The Jolly Lemon (twice), Music Musica, The Almanzora Group of Friends, The Old Tavern and Frankie’s Bar. The quiz also inspired other forms of fund-raising including the Wacky Races in Villaricos, started by Ross and Christine of Taberna Cristina who, sadly, had to return to the UK last year. Luckily, however, the new proprietors are continuing the good work and the Wacky Races future looks secure, unlike that of the Molly Malone quiz. Siobhan and Ray who have organized the quiz so far wish to thank everyone who helped their efforts most sincerely but they are, for personal reasons, stepping down this year. It was hoped that ‘Fast Lane Jim’ would have gathered a team around him to carry on but, unfortunately, he also has gone back to the UK. So, if there is anyone (or group) out there who would like to keep this quiz going please let us know. Siobhan and Ray say that they are prepared to continue to put up the trophy and replicas and usual winner’s prizes each year. Contact 677 681 540 if you can help.
DVD / I NTERNET C LUB The Hangover
Todd Phillips - the creator of Old School and Road Trip - directs, from a script by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore. A groom-to-be and three other conceited young dudes go away to Las Vegas for a "bachelor party" the weekend just before the wedding day. Three are best buddies; the fourth is the borderline-special-needs brother of the bride whom the rest just have to tolerate. The guys are destined to wake up in a trashed hotel suite with no memory of what has happened the night before: there's a tiger in the bathroom and a baby in the kitchen - and the groom has gone missing. The rest of the weekend is spent piecing together their terrible night, and the key to their misfortune is an horrendous camp Chinese gangster called Mr Chow: an uproarious performance from Ken Jeong.

Unknown Reindeer The game show contestant was only 200 points behind the leader and about to answer the final question - worth 500 points! “To be today’s champion,” the show’s smiling host intoned, “name two of Santa’s reindeer.” The contestant, a man in his early thirties, gave a sigh of relief, gratified that he had drawn such an easy question. “Rudolph!” he said confidently, “and, ...Olive!” The studio audience started to applaud (like the little sign above their heads said to do,) but the clapping quickly faded into mumbling, and the confused host replied, “Yes, we’ll accept Rudolph, but could you please explain ... ‘Olive?!?’ “You know,” the man circled his hand forward impatiently and began to sing, “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer had a very shiny nose. And if you ever saw it, you would even say it glowed. *Olive,* the other reindeer...”

M.A.C.S. (Mojácar Area Cancer Support) would like to say a very big THANK YOU to CAROL AND RON of GEE BEES KARAOKE and the management/staff of the IRISH ROVER for the hard work they put in arranging the "2009 STARS IN THE BARS" CONTEST - culminating in the final on Friday 27th November at the Irish Rover in Mojácar. It was a fantastic night, supported by many, many people - a resounding success for all, which must have made all the planning and hard work worthwhile - the place was 'rocking' - it was great to see so many people supporting such a good cause. The total of monies raised for M.A.C.S. will be announced as soon as it is all counted. It goes without saying that our thanks go to ALL THE BARS who took part along with their supporters and finally, the contestants themselves - without whom it could not have happened and who made it such an enjoyable evening for all - WELL DONE TO EVERYONE and ON BEHALF OF M.A.C.S. 'THANK YOU' and Merry Christmas xxx

Facts About Christmas Christmas was not celebrated anywhere before the third century and only gradually moved northwards through Europe. Charlemagne was crowned on Christmas day 800. It was probably the Normans who brought the celebration to England. Father Christmas has two addresses, Edinburgh and the North Pole. Letters addressed to 'TOYLAND' or 'SNOWLAND' go to Edinburgh, but letters addressed to 'THE NORTH POLE' have to be sent there because there really is such a place! Father Christmas' reindeers are called Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen and Rudolph. Eight of these names are taken from Clement C. Moore's "A Visit From St. Nicholas," and the ninth from the song "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" (Donner is also known as Donder.) E n g l a n d has only known seven white Christmases in the entire twentieth century. According to the records of the Meteorological Office in London, snow fell on Christmas Day only in 1938 and 1976. (The definition of a white Christmas in England is when one snowflake falls on the roof of the London Weather Centre.) An old wives' tale says that bread baked on Christmas Eve will never go mouldy. The Christmas turkey was imported to France by the Jesuits and it is still known in some French dialects as a 'Jesuite'. Christmas Pudding originates from an old, Celtic dish known as 'frumenty' and was first made as a kind of soup with raisins and wine in it. December 25th was not celebrated as the birthday of Christ until the year AD 440.
The Queen's Christmas speech was televised for the first time in 1957. Christmas crackers were invented by Thomas Smith. He had imported some French novelties to sell as Christmas gifts, but these were not popular until he wrapped them up and added a snapper. Each year between 34-36 million Christmas trees are produced to cope with the holiday demand. Electric tree lights were first used just 3 years after Thomas Edison has his first mass public demonstration of electric lights back in 1879. Thomas Edison’s assistant, Edward Johnson, came up with the idea of electric lights for Christmas trees in 1882. His lights were a huge hit. It took quite a few years, however, before they would be made available to the general public. In 1895 Ralph Morris, an American telephonist, invented the string of electric Christmas lights similar to the ones we use today. The actual strings of lights had already been manufactured for use in telephone switchboards. Morris looked at the tiny bulbs and had the idea of using them on his tree. In 1647 the English parliament passed a law that made Christmas illegal. Christmas festivities were banned by Puritan leader Oliver Cromwell, who considered feasting and revelry on what was supposed to be a holy day to be immoral. Anybody caught celebrating Christmas was arrested. The ban was lifted only when the Puritans lost power in 1660. In 1843 the first Christmas card was created on the instructions of an Englishman, Sir Henry Cole. J.C. Horsley designed the card and sold 1000 copies in London. Postmen in Victorian England were popularly called "robins". This was because their uniforms
were red. Victorian Christmas cards often showed a robin delivering Christmas mail. In the nineteenth century, the British Post Office used to deliver cards on Christmas morning. The first Christmas stamp was released in Canada in 1898. St Francis of Assisi introduced Christmas Carols to formal church services. The word, carol, comes from the ancient Greek choros, which means "dancing in a circle," and from the Old French word carole, meaning "a song to accompany dancing." The first instrument on which the carol "Silent Night" was played was a guitar. The popular Christmas song "Jingle Bells" was composed in 1857 by James Pierpont, and was originally called "One-Horse Open Sleigh." It was actually written for Thanksgiving, not Christmas. It is not until Twelfth Night that the figures of the Three Kings are supposed to be added to the Christmas crib. The "Twelve Days of Christmas" gifts: A partridge in a pear tree, two turtledoves, three French hens, four calling birds, five gold rings, six geese laying, seven swans swimming, eight maids milking, nine ladies dancing, ten lords leaping, eleven pipers piping, and twelve drummers drumming. There are 364 gifts altogether, one for everyday of the year. The poem commonly referred to as "The Night Before Christmas" was originally titled "A Visit From Saint Nicholas." This poem was written by Clement Moore for his children and some guests, one of whom anonymously sent the poem to a New York newspaper for publication.

January Facts, Customs and Traditions January was established as the first month of the year by the Roman calendar. It was named after the god Janus (Latin word for door). Janus has two faces which allowed him to look both backwards into the old year and forwards into the new one at the same time. He was the 'spirit of the opening'. In the very earliest Roman calendars there were no months of January or February at all. The ancient Roman calendar had only ten months and the New Year started the year on 1st March. To the Romans, ten was a very important number. Even when January (or Januarius as the Romans called it) was added, the New Year continued to start in March. It remained so in England and her colonies until about 200 years ago. The Anglo-Saxons called the first month Wolf Monath because wolves came into the villages in winter in search of food. New Year’s Day is the first day of the year in the Gregorian calendar and a time for making New Year’s resolutions and looking forward and wishing for a good year ahead. In the old days, the New Year started with a custom called 'first footing', which was supposed to bring good luck to people for the coming year. As soon as midnight had passed and January 1st had started, people used to wait behind their doors for a dark haired person to arrive. The visitor carried a piece of coal, some bread, some
money and some greenery. These were all for good luck - the coal to make sure that the house would always be warm, the bread to make sure everyone in the house would have enough food to eat, money so that they would have enough money, and the greenery to make sure that they had a long life. The visitor would then take a pan of dust or ashes out of the house with him, thus signifying the departure of the old year. The 1st of January was a highly significant day in mediaeval superstitions regarding prosperity, or lack of it, in the year ahead. A flat cake was put on one of the horns of a cow in every farmyard. The farmer and his workers would then sing a song and dance around the cow until the cake was thrown to the ground. If it fell in front of the cow that signified good luck; to fall behind indicated the opposite. It was an old Saxon belief that the 2nd January was one of the unluckiest days of the whole year. Those unfortunate enough to be born on this day could expect to die an unpleasant death. St Hilary's feast day on 13th January has gained the reputation of being the coldest day of the year due to past cold events starting on or around this date. One of the most severe winters in history began around 13 January in 1205, when the Thames in London froze over and ale and wine turned to solid ice and were sold by weight. The worst cold spells in Britain occurred between 1550 and 1750. The climate during this time was
known as the Little Ice Age, when winters were so cold that the Thames froze over each year. It was not uncommon for the freeze to last over three months, as in the case of the winters of 1683 - 1684 and 1715 - 1716. The first recorded ‘Frost Fair’ was held on the frozen river Thames in London in 1608. It had tents, sideshows, food stalls and even included ice bowling! The Thames had frozen over several times before 1608 and in the 16th century, Henry VIII is said to have travelled all the way from central London to Greenwich by sleigh along the river during the winter of 1536 and Elizabeth I took walks on the ice during the winter of 1564. The last Frost Fair was held in the winter of 1814. It began on February 1, and lasted just four days. An elephant was led across the river below Blackfriars Bridge. W a s s a i l i n g has been associated with Christmas and New Year as far back as the 1400s. It was a way of passing on good wishes among family and friends. People went from door to door, rather like carol singers at Christmas time, but at New Year they were called 'wassailers'. Although celebrated on Twelfth Night, January 6th, most people insist on wassailing on 'Old Twelvey Night', January 17th, as that would have been the correct date before the introduction of the Gregorian calendar in 1752.

Wacky Races 2009 - fun, controversy and drama Early November saw the most dramatic Wacky Races to date with two disputed races, a crash in the second heat and mid-November weather to rival August that made all the competitors a bit hot under the collar as the 2009 'Carreras de Autos Locos' got under way in Villaricos. A brilliant build up to the event suffered an initial blow when the local Police failed to provide the crowd barriers to keep the spectators off the track. This led to some initial delays and disorganisation but soon, the hand-pushed carts sponsored by businesses far and wide were careering around the track in the small town of Villaricos. Well, not exactly: The infamous Coffin Dodgers from Los Gallardos, all decked-out in full funeral attire and pushing the worlds' only living corpse called Billy Bones preferred a leisurely stroll. Consequently, they were well-beaten in the third heat by a team from Asprodalba, a local centre in Vera for people with learning difficulties - for whom the event is organised each year. In true 'Dick Dastardly' style of double-dealing and trickery, the Wacky Races soon began to live up to its name as teams took turns to challenge each other in heats around the Villaricos course. There had been rumours of pre-race sabotage as last year's winner El Toro from Taberna Cristina (which crashed in their first race), reported punctured tyres, missing push bars, and disappearing team mates. Had they been
kidnapped? But it was all in good fun. A mid-afternoon break from the racing was provided by the Dusty Boots team of Line Dancers and there were several circuits by the wonderful old cars of Los Coches Clasicos de Levante before the more serious racing entered its final stages. In the end, Frankie’s Fliers cruised to victory overall despite a semi-final dispute with team Spectrum FM Corners Bar which resulted in them having to pay a fine. But the team sponsored by Frankie’s Bar on Vera Playa was in jubilant mood after taking the chequered flag. Team leader, Alan Walklate said: "Everyone did well and it's been a fantastic day; Thanks to everybody." The High Flyers from Los Conteros

Bill White of the Coffin Dodgers accepts the prize for raising the most money for Asprodalba won the prize for the best-dressed team and the Coffin Dodgers won the prize for the 'Wackiest' team plus the Molly Malone prize for the most sponsorship raised for Asprodalba. "Next year, it would be nice to have even more stalls and even more people par ticipating on the organisers committee," commented Siobhan, a long time supporter of Asprodalba and the Wacky Races and the founder of the Molly Malone trophy. This point was echoed after

Overall, the event was not short of fun or drama, and an estimated four thousand euros was raised for an extremely worthwhile cause. PRU - Female tabby, spayed, approx. D.O.B: May 07. Poor Pru has a really sorry tale to tell. As a kitten, she was found wandering in the Parque Comercial over Xmas 2007, crying for food and shelter. She came into our care in January 2008 and it was no surprise that she had been homed by the end of that month as she was such an exemplary cat, nondemanding, just very happy to be in a warm place with regular food and care. We made follow-up calls, and her new owners loved her very much and said they had introduced another cat to keep Pru company PAGE 30

The waiter replied, "I will bring you a fresh cup." After a few moments, the man called out, "This is the same cup of tea!" How did he know? 9: A man managed to visit over thirty foreign countries without his passport. He was welcomed in each country and left each one of his own accord. He did this in one day. How? whilst they were out at work all day, but Pru was just very content being an “only child” and enjoyed her own company. However, Pru is yet another victim of the current recession, and has been returned to us as her owners have to leave Spain in search of work. It’s so heart-breaking to see the animal’s grief at losing both their home and owners. Pru is currently with a fosterer to reassure her that all will be well. She still possesses the same humble temperament – is it really too much to wish for a permanent loving home?

Oct ´08. Sally (so called as the name means "Princess" in Christian & Hebrew) is the nicest, most elegant lady you could wish to meet. She is sweet-natured, friendly with other cats and doesn’t seem to mind dogs. Thin and roaming, she was being fed by some kindly holiday-makers who just couldn’t bear to leave her to fend for herself. Extremely affectionate, she adores cuddles and deserves a majestic home fit for a princess.
TILLY - Female tortoiseshell. Such a terrified little bAundle when she arrived, but has settled down with the help of her brother and sister who always give her washes and cuddles. Tactile, tender & timid.
JACK - Tabby/white shorthair. Approx. D.O.B: 15 April 09, fully vaccinated. Mum was found fending for herself and kits, the lady was able to keep mum plus two of her kits, but couldn’t afford to keep them all, so Jack & Jill joined us at the shelter. Initially shy and nervous, they have blossomed into "chocolatebox" cuties and it has been wonderful to see them grow in confidence. Jill has been homed, so Jack is hoping there is someone out there who could be his best friend and play with him, offering him a stable home-life.

They may come home with large bags of things they call gifts. Do not assume that all the gifts are yours. 3. Be tolerant if your humans put decorations on you. They seem to get some special kind of pleasure out of seeing how you look with fake antlers.

"Beachcomber Pacha" getting into the spirit of things.
A Dog's Rules For Christmas 1. Be especially patient with your
humans during this time. They may appear to be more stressedout than usual and they will appreciate long comforting dog leans.
They may bring a large tree into the house and set it up in a prominent place and cover it with lights and decorations. Bizarre as this may seem to you, it is an important ritual for your humans, so there are some things you need to know: - Don't pee on the tree - Don't drink water in the container that holds the tree Mind your tail when you are near the tree - If there are packages under the tree, even ones that smell interesting or that have your name on them, don't rip them open - Don't chew on the cord that runs from the funnylooking hole in the wall to the tree.

5. Your humans may occasionally invite lots of strangers to come visit during this season. These parties can be lots of fun, but they also call for some discretion on your part: - Not all strangers appreciate kisses and leans - Don't eat off the buffet table - Beg for goodies subtly Be pleasant, even if unknowing strangers sit on your sofa - Don't drink out of glasses that are left within your reach. 6. Likewise, your humans may take you visiting. Here your manners will also be important: Observe all the rules in #4 for trees that may be in other people's houses. (4a is particularly important) - Respect the territory of other animals that may live in the house - Tolerate children - Turn on your charm big time.

18: Closing the Gates of Derry – historical pageant held in Londonderry, Ireland. 22: Winter Solstice. 26: St. Stephen’s Day. The first Christian martyr, the patron saint of altar servers. His story is told in the Acts of the Apostles. Also referred to as Boxing Day due to the custom of giving Christmas ‘boxes’ – presents to the people who have worked for us during the year. 28: Holy Innocents Day. On this day we think of the babies slaughtered by Herod in his attempt to kill the Christ Child. 29: St Thomas of Canterbury (Thomas Becket) martyred in his own Cathedral at Christmastide. Born 1118, martyred on this day 1170. 31: New Year’s Eve. JANUAR Y JANUARY
5: Twelfth Night or Epiphany Eve. The evening of the fifth of January, preceding Twelfth Day and the eve of the Epiphany is formerly the last day of the Christmas festivities. It is marked in some cultures by the exchange of gifts taking on a similar significance to Christmas Eve. More recent traditions hold that it is unlucky to leave Christmas decorations hanging after Twelfth Night so as not to bring bad luck upon the home. If decorations are not removed they should stay up all year. 6: Twelfth Day or Epiphany. Also known as Old Christmas Day and Twelfthtide. On the twelfth day after Christmas, Christians celebrate the visit of the Magi or wise men to the baby Jesus. 7: St Distaff's Day. This was the day on which women had to return to work with the distaff (another name for a spindle) after the Christmas holiday. Plough Monday: The first Monday after Epiphany, the day on which work started again after Twelfth Night and the day on which labourers had to return to the fields.

The Human Body
• • • • • • • • • •
It takes your food seven seconds to get from your mouth to your stomach. One human hair can support 3 kg (6.6 lb). The average man's penis is two times the length of his thumb. Human thighbone are stronger than concrete. A woman's heart beats faster than a man's. There are about one trillion bacteria on each of your feet. Women blink twice as often as men. The average person's skin weighs twice as much as the brain. Your body uses 300 muscles to balance itself when you are standing still. If saliva can not dissolve something, you can not taste it. Women reading this will be finished now. Men are still busy checking their thumbs!!!! Beachcomber John

A Point of View Panga by Barrie Crumblehume With reference to the discussed about the fish Panga. May I say that many of the comments in the press all originate from one totally self-interested person who in my mind has attempted to destroy the businesses of people who have tried to supply highly competitive food in these difficult times. In my opinion those bars that provide fish & chips for 4.95€ do a great service to the Mojácar community. The fish Panga is passed as a healthy and cheap fish, by the EU and the UK government and is sold in the UK by Tesco and other supermarkets. In Mojácar there are many hundreds of people who would readily say that the 4.95€ fish & chips is a welcome relief for financially hard hit Brits, who don’t want to pay 8.95€ for fish which is not even named. So my advice to all people who want to have a great value meal go where bars serve a delicious Panga at reasonable prices. Yours B.C.
