From the Editor
I know you’d be disappointed if I didn’t put my hat on!
F
irstly, it has come to my attention that a Mr. S.A.M. is under the impression that The Advertiser is closing. This is totally untrue and I would appreciate the rumour monger’s apology and that he retract his unfounded statement to all he has advised! So, now that situation has been addressed, let me welcome you all to the last edition of 2010 - a festive, fun packed and informative issue for your entertainment and knowledge. I hope you enjoy it. Remember there will be no January issue (happy Burn’s Night to those who will be celebrating) and the deadline for the February issue will be the 15th of January. Next stop in the calendar is Valentine’s Day so get your Cupid caps on. In the meantime don’t forget to send in photos of your festive frolics and let me know of any
goings on throughout December and January. Lastly, my sincerest thanks to my ‘Advertisees’, contributors and photographers – past and present, assistors and mentors – still running the gauntlet with me, and my Mum, who usually gets her head bitten off in the final hours of getting it to the printer! And for those as excited as what I am about Christmas, according to my Santa Countdown Clock it is precisely 26 sleeps, 3 hours, 42 minutes and 36 seconds away! Merry Christmas Tracey

John is thinking of getting a few of these sticks set up for their local beach anglers in front of the Beachcomber.
Some of Mojacar's winter residents are back (thank goodness, says John) and here's some of them known as 'The Marshalls and friends' having lunch at the Beachcomber.
'Beachcomber Baylee' getting ready for lunch and the coming festivities. There are parties coming up on December 10th and 11th. That's when Janet (she's the wig loving lass wot woz running Talk of the Town for a while recently) will hold leaving parties in her two favourite watering holes - Mi Taberna on the 10th and Bar Med on the 11th. It should be a good week for fun and leisure, as there are public holidays on Monday 6th and Wednesday 8th. For the sake of local hostelries, let's hope things do pick up a bit. As I drove down the playa recently I was struck by the large number of places that had closed, and by the small number of customers in those that remained open. Sadly, the demise of one of the latest casualties, Sitio, was due not to a dearth of punters, but instead to a campaign by a Madrid resident, the owner of a nearby property, who made relentless complaints against the bar: Even, I'm told, when she was absent. Geoff and Iain also told me that they intend to have a long holiday in England, their first Christmas there for ages, and then will return to work across the road from their old bar. Tom, meanwhile, had a "major" moan to me about El Toro being closed (it changed names from Lyke’s). Tom was about to leave The Cave Bar to drive up the hill and had tried without success to phone Bar La Parata to see if he could get a final tipple on his way home.

Photographer Ian spotted this on his way home one day. What he wants to know is where is the crash helmet for the dog? I gather that "disco" Ian will be making music in The Cave Bar on Wednesday and Friday evenings for a while. The nice thing about Ian's change of venue, for me at least, is that I can easily walk (or stagger) home from there. We recently drove back from visiting England. It was our 5th drive there, via Dunkirk, in the past year. That's the joy of being retired - one can really pester one's family. And since we aren't in any hurry to meet work deadlines we can dawdle. My brother now lives in the Charentes region of France, having left La Mela, so we take a midjourney stopover. As a result, we can actually get to London, by diesel powered car, for about the same price as two people flying from Almeria. We can change our minds about travelling dates, even on the day before, at no extra cost, and we have independent transport when we get there. You should try it sometime. In case anyone is planning to drive to England via France, as opposed to taking the ferry from Santander or Bilbao, I would be happy to pass on my route notes. Over the years we have used various routes, some because they were

A GENUINE PIECE OF IRELAND IN MOJACAR IRISH OWNED & IRISH MANAGED
quick, some because they were scenic, and some because they determinedly avoided toll roads. This time last year, on the motorway between Zaragoza and Valencia, we drove through areas that were covered in over a metre of snow. It was real picture postcard stuff. Fortunately, Spain is always prepared for winter, the motorway was well ploughed and gritted, and we didn't even slither. It's raining as I write this bit of blurb and the temperature hasn't risen above 11 degrees all day. Some years I have still been in shorts, at least during the daytime, until early December. That's why I can't help recalling that in the middle of the afternoon, about eight years ago,
right behind the Jolly Lemon, I took a photo of Lyn with tiny snowflakes falling past her. The temperature was two degrees and even the low hills along Mojácar playa had a covering of snow. The date? December 6th! The only other time I can recall snow was at two in the morning, also in early December, almost twenty years ago. This was a much heavier fall of snow and sleet, which lay on the ground for a few hours, and I went out in my pyjamas, initially barefooted, to take flash photos of it. his month we learn that making a film is a task easily performed by half-wits. What Saturdays are for! We welcome the Windsors to the 21st century and the BBC to Europe. Let’s start with the Queen. The World’s most famous Nan has come to join us in the Twenty First century. She has gone and got herself a Facebook account. Well, I suspect, that’s not entirely true. I imagine one of her staff has been given the task of setting one up for her. Having looked at it, I doubt very much she has even seen it. You see it differs slightly from other/normal Facebook accounts in many ways, not least of which being that she has no friends. She hasn’t posted any “what’s on your mind” blogs. We cannot even send her a message. All there is

to it really, is some nice pictures and a brief catalogue of upcoming royal events. None of the other features of Facebook are brought into play at all and one can only suppose that in the interests of common decency you aren’t even allowed to “Poke” her. Hardly seems much point to it really but at least it’s a step in the right direction. And now! News from the frontiers of the film industry. I have been having the time of my life … again. You see I’ve become a movie director and script writer, albeit part-time. I have managed to break into this fiercely competitive industry with the help of a website. The site is www.xtranormal.com and this is how my Saturdays will be wasted for the foreseeable future and as much more time as my schedule will allow. In essence www.xtranormal.com is a website, a mostly free one, that allows you to build up a movie, all of your own, using cartoon actors. It could not be easier to use. It is as simple as choosing a number of characters to play your parts and typing in
their script for them. The site automatically lines up the characters to speak in time with your words so you can get a fairly respectable result by simply typing. In fact the guys that run this site even boast in their blurb, “If you can type, you can make movies.” If, however you want to add a certain level of professionalism to your work then you can, well you can try at any rate. Xtranormal.com offer you an extraordinarily easy to use set of director’s tools. You can start by choosing your camera angle, with a choice of ten to choose from and then move on to insert facial expressions, hand gestures and body postures. As well as sound effects and music. There is plenty to play with on this site without having to spend a Euro, but you can buy points that you then trade for upgrades. These upgrades will let you change the whole set and give you countless new characters to choose from. Because it is free and endless fun I strongly recommend you go and play with the free version, you will probably find it sufficient for your needs

and have a stonking great laugh at the same time. Once you have made your movie it is a matter of a mouse click to publish directly to Facebook, YouTube or email to someone. On realizing that, I have decided that I am going to send some Christmas messages to family and loved ones using this website. It will bring a better response than any Christmas card ever would. So go to www.xtranormal.com and ..... ACTION! You may remember that I broached the subject of getting the BBC’s “IPlayer” in Spain, and indeed outside of the U.K. Well there was a press release a couple of weeks ago on this very subject. The problem has always been to do with licensing laws. The Beeb have now said that these issues have been resolved and we should be able to use “catch-up” internet services in the early part of 2011. On the subject of 2011 do have a lovely Christmas and a prosperous New Year. I’ll see you in the next decade. El Navegador.

It was whilst teaching a workshop on crystal healing and the theories about a lost continent called Atlantis, that I was reminded of my holiday in Egypt. It had always been a dream of mine to visit the seven wonders of the world. Of course Egypt was on my list and it was September, late eighties, that I finally made it there. I arrived in Giza during the wee hours of the morning, went straight to bed exhausted by the journey but awoke bright and early, full of enthusiasm, knowing that today was the day that I got to see the pyramids. There is no way that you can explain the enormity of these buildings. We perused around each one by camel and settled at a large hole, which was the gateway to one of them. We were then invited to enter the pyramid. Being claustrophobic I was hesitant but was strongly urged to go in. I agreed on the basis that I could be the first one in and out. I lead the group as we all crawled through the dark tunnel, the only thing that kept me going was that I could see the light at the end of the tunnel. I made it and was very pleased with myself. Once inside I was amazed, and in awe. It was so light and full of energy. There was a bright light that beamed in through a hole where a stone had been removed and this light filled my soul with light and energy. I felt so alive. There were those around me who were disappointed with the space inside and I heard repeatedly, “Is this it?!” and yet I was amazed and so happy that I had made the decision to enter inside this vast space. The time came for us to leave and I could have quite happily just stayed there, I felt utterly at peace. Throughout the rest of my holiday I found myself crying for no apparent reason, I remember walking through a market place one evening when a car drove by with a newly married couple inside and the bride put out her hand and touched mine and once again, I sobbed. I know now that this was an emotional release caused by energy from the time spent in the pyramid. On my return to the UK everything in my life changed. I felt unsettled and unhappy with my work life and my love life. I looked at my partner and thought, what in the world am I doing with you? I realised that I did not enjoy work as a hairdresser. I wasn’t sure what I wanted, but I felt the need to get far away from my life, my work, my partner and my family. I couldn’t explain why, but I spent the weekend asking for a sign. Monday morning I picked up my weekly edition of the Hairdresser’s Journal and went straight to the classifieds, looking for an answer. There were many ads for hairdressers wanted to work abroad and on cruise ships, but one particular ad jumped out at me. “British Hairdressers Wanted in USA”. Wow, I thought, I am there. This is where the next part of my story starts, but you will have to wait until next time. I will let you know what happens next and explain more about the Atlantis story, which explains so much of how my spiritual path comes together. You can learn more about Atlantis in a book called “Discover Atlantis” by Diana Cooper and Shaaron Hutton.

For many people the only certainties in life are death and taxes, perhaps an obvious exclusion is change. Times are changing fast and many of our long held beliefs and institutions are falling apart before our very eyes (I will return to this point in a future article “An alternative view”). In a world that is forever changing how do we as individuals react or respond to change in our own lives? Are we open and willing to change or are we resistant and sometimes stuck or paralysed? Sometimes nature can provide us with a few clues. The weather, which may well be one of the most natural changing experiences we face in our daily lives, operates within four seasons. Here in Andalucía we are blessed with consistent sunshine amongst dotted periods of rainfall. Yet if we were to review the past six weeks many people have been impacted by rainfall or cloudy and windy conditions as our human emotions get caught up in a short term shift. Animals and plants are two parts of nature which are wonderful teachers. They show us in a natural way how to be with changing circumstances. They display great flexibility by continuing to thrive and grow and all the time adapting to new found environments and circumstances. Human beings are of course flexible and adaptive too, yet one of our weaknesses may well be our mindset as our thoughts and emotions can sometimes cause, tension, worry, concern and stress. It has been said that the majority of our human fears and concerns is time spent worrying about something that ultimately never happens. To illustrate the nature of change in our experience, it may be useful to remember that our own cells are replacing themselves every 28 days. In fact, in a 7 year cycle our bodies have completely changed, so today we are completely different to whom we were 7 years ago on a biological and chemical level. In practical terms we may well have changed in many other areas including our relationships, our jobs, our careers and our physical location. So adapting to change is a very normal and natural process, yet because we are creatures of habit and routine it can potentially cause us discomfort and concern. One of the keys is to learn to relax and let go and be very present to the fact that nothing remains the same forever. Ultimately change is very natural and is part of a growing, living, organic process. We either continue to develop and grow or we stop, stagnate and die. Being part of an evolving process can create wonderful possibilities as we either focus on new changes, which may be best described as being pro-active towards new goals, targets and aspirations. Or, being completely at peace with life knowing that there is always more to discover, yet trusting that what will manifest is meant to be and allows us to be reactive in any given moment. I am not suggesting that either option is right or wrong, it is just the way that you choose. Life has an uncanny way of showing us, that which we require to learn, either in the moment we are meant to know it or as part of the teaching along the way. Many teachers have presented themselves to me along the path and interestingly they have appeared at the time when I have been most open to change. “When the student is ready, the teacher appears” I am sure is a quote that some of you have heard of before. For those of us who are ready, and for those of us who are not, an exciting journey lies ahead. Some tools that may be useful for the pro-active path include visualization, you may well see it in the mind first, you feel it in the body or your reality later. Taking the first step or getting into action will assist you in the change process and may well help you overcome the fear of procrastination. The reactive route has more to do with being. Being relaxed, being present with the now and being patient. All of these are soft skills that take time to develop and can be enhanced with gentle meditation and working more on the inside than the outside (physical). When working with Tai Ji students I can see great shifts in their physical change as they become more relaxed and self aware of the tension that they carry. From my own ongoing journey, which is always based on experience, I too can see and feel the benefits of regular Tai Ji practice and being willing to be coached and mentored by my teachers along the path or journey. In summary change is a constant in our lives that, if we embrace it, can be our closest friend, or if we resist it and keep it in place, it may well continue to be our enemy? As always, the choice is yours.

The Yin and the Yang plays a significant part in Tai Ji philosophy and practice as it also does in everyday life. So what does it mean, how can it be best described and how could we possibly bring it into our daily lives? Yin is female and Yang is male. They fit together as two parts of a whole so it consistently brings us back to perfect balance and harmony. The Yin is the black, soft feminine energy, it is the dark side of the mountain, it resides in the North which means it gets no light (hence the black), so it gets no life. If we attempt to explain this in the physical body, for example in the hand, it would be limp, hanging down. The Yang is white, hard or firm masculine, it gets plenty of light because it is the opposite side of the mountain (South). It has a life force or energy to it so again if represented in the physical hand it would be firm, with the wrists more at a 90 degree angle with fingers pointing out or upwards. The Taijitu symbol best illustrates the differences. Yin and Yang are complete opposites yet they interact within a greater whole, as part of a dynamic system. Everything has both aspects of yin and yang, but either

Yin & Yang
part of these aspects may manifest more strongly at given points as they ebb and flow overtime. Examples of the complete opposites of yin and yang could be dark and light, up and down or cold and hot with varying forms of extreme in between. With the middle ground of balance between up and down or grey in between the black and white. In our Tai Ji practice we are always attempting to find the middle ground or the perfect balance. So Yin and Yang are always opposite and equal qualities. These often give rise to such contradictory statements like finding stillness in movement, or movement in stillness. Other statements such as distinguishing between full and empty or preparing for a fight you may never have, these all have their Yin and Yang in perfect measure. The nature of Yin and Yang gives rise to many other life examples in particular, if we bear in mind, the nature of feminine (woman) and masculine (man). How long would a race or culture survive if it only had men or women? This race or culture would disappear within one generation. Yet men and woman together create new generations that enable those races or cultures to continue. A seed will sprout from the earth and generally grow upwards towards the sky which is best described as a yang movement. Then, when it reaches its full potential or height, it will fall or bend over, which is a yin movement. Described in another way Yin and Yang are always opposite and equal qualities. So that when one quality reaches its peak it will naturally transform into the opposite quality so that a flower that reaches its full bloom in summer will begin to produce seeds and die back in winter. As an exercise in your day to day journey of life just begin to notice the Yin and Yang of all that is, and maybe you will begin to see the perfect balance of all that is.

www.advertisermojacar.com This year's Wacky Races in Villaricos early November has been hailed as another great success - both as a tremendous bit of fun on the day, and also as an important event to raise much needed funds for the local occupational centre for people with learning difficulties, Asprodalba. Once again the event lived up to its name with an array of wacky carts and contestants who joined in the spirit of the day to support this worthwhile cause. Much thanks goes out from Asprodalba to everybody involved. There will be a presentation of funds raised (around 2,000 euros) in December once all the money has been collected in. (

Herbal Medicine “Devil’s Claw” It was during my quest for a tonic to help with my sluggish digestion that I came across Devil’s Claw. Used by various peoples in southern Africa, Devil’s Claw is traditionally used as a tonic especially for digestive problems, for arthritis and rheumatism, to reduce fevers, and as an ointment applied to sores, ulcers and boils. Current western use draws significantly on these traditional applications and this root is commonly prescribed for arthritis and rheumatic conditions such as gout, osteoarthritis, fibrositis and rheumatoid arthritis. Its analgesic action helps alleviate pain, often in combination with Willow Bark. It will also reduce swelling due to water retention and inflammation. It may need to be used for some weeks for best results. Arthritis conditions are often associated with poor digestive function so that its stimulant activity on the stomach and gall bladder contributes to its overall therapeutic value as an anti-arthritic. It finds a place in many prescriptions for joint problems. Where does it come from? A native of southern and eastern Africa, particularly in the desert steppes of the Transvaal, Devil’s Claw thrives in clayey, sandy soil. The young secondary side roots are unearthed in autumn, cut into approx 2cm pieces and dried quickly to prevent mould growth. Who should take it? Devil’s Claw appears to have an anti-inflammatory effect. It is likely that it has most effect in inflammatory arthritic conditions and is PAGE 14

also beneficial for back pain. Devil’s Claw also stimulates and tones up the digestive system. It is also hypertensive and decreases the heart rate. Aches and Pains! Devil’s Claw helps with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, digestive weakness, indigestion and flatulence. Combinations: Similar to aromatherapy, natural medicine can be enhanced when combining more than one herb. Some useful combinations for Devil’s Claw are: • With Black Cohosh and St John’s Wort for rheumatoid arthritis. • With Willow Bark for osteoarthritis. • With Angelica to cleanse the digestive system. Cautions: Avoid in cases of stomach or duodenal ulcer. Best avoided during pregnancy. WILLOW BARK Willow Bark also has anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antirheumatic benefits and works really well with Devils Claw. Especially for arthritis and rheumatic pain affecting the knees, hips and pains. Experience suggests that Willow Bark will not reverse arthritic conditions with other herbs, such as Devils Claw. Next time I will write about how you can improve your overall health and stress levels. I am more than happy to accept emails with any health care concerns that you may have and advise you on holistic treatments and natural medicines that will be beneficial for your well-being. Restaurant Review
The Irish Rover on Mojácar Playa situated between The Levante Cafeteria and Lua has recently introduced their Winter Warmer Menu served from 1-3pm and 6-8pm offering a choice of eight main dishes all at the very reasonable price of 5€. So one Monday evening we strolled into the welcoming warmth of the restaurant to sample said menu. There were three of us so we opted to try two winter warmers and a main menu dish. I chose the Roast of the Day either beef or turkey which was served with roast potato, mash and a variety of fresh veggies, two yorkies and of course Phil’s famous gravy. The beef was beautiful and such good value. Helen had Cottage Pie with chips and gravy again a good sized portion and very tasty. Dave opted for Gammon with egg and pineapple, yes you may be surprised but both compliment gammon well and any establishment that will serve both on the same plate goes up in his estimation. Other choices are Sausage and Mash with onion gravy and fresh veg, Cod Goujons, chips and peas, Beef Burgers, onions and chips, Scampi, chips and peas, Chicken Nuggets, chips and beans and Spaghetti Bolognaise.
There is a selection of wines at various prices but the house red, Barceló, at 9€ was very acceptable. Christmas isn’t far away and their 6 course Celebration Festive Menu on 25th December looks good at 35€. Choices include Homemade Mushroom Soup, Prawn Cocktail or Melon with Serrano Ham followed by Mango Sorbet then a choice of Turkey Crown, Beef and Gammon with seasonal vegetables, Nut Cutlet or Salmon, traditional Xmas Pud, Homemade Trifle or Cheese and Biscuits then Mince Pies, Coffee and Mints. So if you want to book just call 950 473 135. The Irish Rover is a very pleasant venue that has plenty of outdoor seating for those who enjoy the winter sun, a covered area for protection against the wind and the indoor restaurant which is warm and welcoming on cooler evenings. There are offers and events which change from time to time so check their advert and the boards outside and if you are truly hungry, try the Winter Warmers which will fill you up without emptying your pocket. Enjoy. Photos©BluwaterWebDesign

We really didn’t need any desserts but Rhubarb Crumble beckoned as did Apple Pie and Homemade Cheesecake of the Day. So after a prudent interval we indulged ourselves, yum yum!! The Irish Rover has a varied menu with most main courses at 10.50€. Also a Menu del Dia at 8.50€ and Menu de la Noche at 10.50€ offering a choice of four starters, mains and puds. Don’t forget to try their traditional Sunday Lunch Carvery with its choice of meats and plenty of fresh veg. Breakfast menu is available from 10.30am until close. There is a wide range of delicious sounding hot and cold Triple Decker Sandwiches, Jacket Potatoes, Omelettes and of course McMurphy Burgers served with homemade chips and salad garnish. Children are catered for too with a choice of main course and ice cream for 6€. PAGE 15

“Tito's beach bar was once again the venue for Mojacar Cricket Club's bi-annual event. 5 teams turned out, namely: EL NARANJO, BAR ESENCIAL, COWBOY COCINA, CHILI BAR, not forgetting the LITTLE DEVILS which comprised totally of enthusiastic junior boys and girls. All were eager to display their skills in competing for the much valued trophy. Each team were guaranteed a minimum of 4 games with the top 2 making the final. BAR ESENCIAL and CHILI BAR earned that right. Although ESENCIAL BAR proved tough opposition, there was no stopping the "odds on" favourites, the CHILI boys, who powered their way to victory to retain the Cup for the fourth consecutive occasion. Who is going to take the title away from them? To enter your team and get the opportunity in the next tournament, contact Sam 663 132 487 or Dave 950 617 606. Restaurant & Bar
Gala's Gala’s Bar and Restaurant on Mojácar Playa, almost opposite Tito’s Beach Bar, is well established providing a variety of food in a cosy yet stylish setting which will be celebrating its 7th anniversary on 2nd January 2011. We were welcomed by Galyna, the owner and chef and Carrie, who seated us at a bright, warm table near a tropical fish tank giving a relaxing ambience in which to peruse the menu over a glass of pleasant house red wine. From the A La Carte Menu we chose Home-made Pate 4.95€, very tasty and Soup of the Day 3.95€ which was Leek and Potato, delicious. We were attracted by the Specialities Menu choosing Iberian Pork Chops 9.95€ and Duck a L’Orange 10.95€, served with seasonal vegetables and sauté potatoes. Both dishes were well presented and served on HOT plates – something Galyna prides herself on, the duck being succulent
and flavourful accompanied by a tangy orange marmalade. The Iberian pork chops are smoked chops topped with pineapple or fresh apple and melted cheese, a tasty combination. Other Specialities are Beef Stroganoff, Chicken Breast stuffed with bacon and mozzarella cheese, Thai Chilli Coconut Chicken and Shoulder of Lamb which serves 2 and must be pre-ordered and priced at 21.95€. Desserts all priced at 4€ include, Apple Pie with Custard or Cream, Sherry Trifle, Assorted Ice cream, Peach Melba, Banana Split, Tiramisu and Cheese and Biscuits. I couldn’t resist Trifle and wasn’t disappointed. The Apple Pie was rustic yet light with plenty of chunky apple, very satisfying. A La Carte starters include a choice of soup, a variety of salads, prawn cocktail and smoked salmon. Main dishes offer Beef, Pork, Chicken, Fish and Vegetarian choices from 6.95€ to 13.95€ for Entrecote Steak.
There is also a very affordable, good quality Menu Del Dia/Noche which has a choice of 3 starters, 6 main courses and 2 desserts for just 8.50€, and is served ALL DAY from 1pm until late. A traditional Roast Lunch is served on Sundays, also from 1pm, offering a choice of Beef, Pork, Chicken or Salmon for the main course at 8.00€. There is a choice of 4 starters and big selection of desserts also available. The Wine List is reasonably priced with, for example, the house red at 5€, Estola at 8€ and El Coto at 12.00€. Christmas is almost upon us and Gala’s are offering a 6 course Christmas Day Lunch for 34.95€. To book your table call 950 472 308 or 618 539 500. For those of you who want to get into the Christmas spirit early or want to celebrate with friends who will not be here at Christmas Gala’s is offering a Pre Christmas Menu from 1st December - 14.95€ for 3 courses plus bottle of wine per table of 4. Bookings are essential. There will be Buffet Dances on Friday the 3rd December, the 10th and 31st then every other Friday in January. Music to suit all tastes. Buffet served at 8pm with dancing from 9pm at the very reasonable price of 6.95€. Galyna in co operation with Jackie from Harmony Hands (Indigo Gym) will be offering Healthy Lifestyle Group Meetings on Wednesdays (1st, 8th, and 15th of December and also in January) These meetings will focus on healthy food and how to cook healthily, plus tastings. Themed nights are planned for January, Mediterranean Cuisine, Russian Cuisine and a Caribbean Night too. Gala’s is staying open throughout winter so why not try one of their forthcoming events or treat yourself to a tasty meal, you shouldn’t be disappointed. Val Carrington Photos©Bluwater Web Design

♦According to an AUAN press
release of the 2nd November nearly three years after their dream home in Vera was demolished, British pensioners Helen and Len Prior are facing another setback in their fight for justice. The Administrative Courts, after a retrial of the case ordered by the Supreme Court in April last year, have upheld the original decision of the Junta de Andalucia requesting the demolition of their home. The decision was taken on the basis that the property was built on rustic land and could provoke the growth of an urban nucleus. Last year the couple were finally offered temporary housing by Vera council. They had already spent two years living in what was formerly the garage of their demolished home. Helen and Len, who are innocent victims of a planning row between Vera council and the Junta, will now have to seek compensation for the loss of their £350,000 home from Vera council who incorrectly issued the planning consent. It is likely that this process will take years, given the perilous state of town hall finances and Spain’s notoriously slow legal system. The implications for the eight homeowners in Albox who face similar proceedings needs to be assessed, but this ruling is not good news for the many innocent victims of planning injustices in this area. AUAN contact info: Tlf: 646 506 943. E-mail: info@almanzoraau.org Rehearsals are now in full swing for the APSA production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The cast number has risen to 62 - that is excluding stage staff and the band, and the ages range from 5 to 70 years. It is truly a community event and one not to miss. They are having a fabulous experience, working with both English and Spanish and is hectic with dancing, singing and script reading all going on at the same time. They are having great fun. The wardrobe mistresses are busy creating beautiful costumes and the scenery artists have their work cut out. The booking of the venue was stressful. But they do

Your old blankets and bedding will be gratefully received. APSA has over 100 dogs in their care. Likewise The Dog House, Huercal Overa. The foundation requires metal feeding bowls, collars and leads of all sizes as well as any dog toys that you may be able to spare to help make the lives of these poor forgotten animals a little more bearable. Also, in anticipation of the forthcoming winter months, blankets and bedding, as well as towels and sheets would be gratefully received to help keep the dogs warm and dry during the 'rainy season'. The foundation also requires volunteers to assist in the bathing, grooming and walking and socializ-

ing of the dogs at the centre. Also, any volunteers who may be able to help with the ever increasing amount of paperwork associated with the running of such an organisation. If anybody feels that they can help with any of these items please contact The Dog House Foundation, via its website, email or by telephoning the number below. Anybody interested in visiting the centre, can contact them to arrange a visit. Here, you will be able to see the facilities available at the centre, as well as find out a bit more about the work they are doing and plans for the future. Tel: 626 766 073. The F.A.C.E. (Fundraising In Arboleas, Caring For Everyone) Annual Christmas Market, even in these lean times, raised 1,991€. The Mayor of Arboleas, Angel Jesús García Martínez, welcomed everyone and opened the market … A great time was had by all. A BIG, BIG thank you goes to all the helpers … “it couldn't be done without you.” To Bob Neale from Sound Waves for doing a great job as Master of Ceremonies and to the Dusty Boots Line Dancers. A special mention also to Trudie Louch and the Voices of Almanzora for such wonderful entertainment. And not forgetting "Santa" for making a special visit at this very busy time of year! F.A.C.E. will now be able to continue supporting MACS (Mojacar Area Cancer Support), AECC (Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer) and hopefully get Age Concern España in to the Almanzora Valley in 2011 … watch this space! On behalf of all the hard working team of F.A.C.E. Charity, President Adele Wrigglesworth would like to say "Thank You! Once again for your continued support." There are still a number of unclaimed Raffle prizes awaiting collection from Sophia’s Gym, Arboleas. “The recent re-launch of the APSA Charity Shop on Travesia Vulcano in Tijola proved very successful. The revamped interior was well received by all customers and the Autumn/Winter stock sold very well. Thanks to all the volunteers who worked so hard to complete the change over and to all the kind people who responded to our bag drops and donated the clothes, linen, shoes, books and bric-a-brac. We now need more volunteers to join our happy team. In particular we need two volunteers for both Wednesdays and Saturdays between the hours of 10am and 2pm. No retail experience is necessary, just motivated, enthusiastic people who wish to help unfortunate, abandoned and abused animals. If you can spare some time to help us or wish to donate clean saleable clothes, linen, shoes, books or bric-a-brac please contact Margaret on 677 856 894.”
To Celebrate the Second Birthday of Eleanor & Gilly’s Line Dance Class at Bar Rumores in Albox, it was decided to use the theme of school days. However it seems that everybody looked as if they came from St Trinian’s. The Line Dance Class is held every Monday afternoon between 2.30pm and 4.30pm. Members of the class had in previous weeks been asked to vote for their favourite dances and the most popular were then danced to throughout the afternoon. The best dressed “pupil” of the afternoon was chosen to be Maureen Sheriff, who received a bottle of Cava as a prize. The party also featured an afternoon tea of jam sandwiches, fairy cakes, and jelly and ice cream. To complete the tea there was a Birthday Cake in the shape of two cowboy boots of course, topped with two candles! Class Members made donations of 50€ towards this year’s chosen Class Charity of F.A.C.E. (Fundraising in Arboleas, Caring For Everyone). This, hopefully along with further donations, will be presented to F.A.C.E. at the end of the fundraising season. For further information please ring 950 439 003.

A sad night at the Irish Rover as they held a party to wish ‘bon voyage’ to Tommy who is returning to the U.K. after working with Phil & Cheryl for nearly four years.
Kudos for Local Insurance Agent Nancy Roberts Gordon of NRG Insurance was the proud recipient of the “Best New Agent for Expatriates in Spain 2009-2010” Award, presented at a ceremony in Benidorm on 30th September 2010. The award is presented to the most outstanding Insurance Professional in the country and recognises superior levels of customer service and dedication in providing exemplary insurance services. Nancy is responsible for serving clients within the Levante Sur area. “I wasn’t expecting to receive anything, much less an award, when my name was announced by Vice President of Liberty Seguros he had to call my name twice!” laughed Nancy. “But in all sincerity, I am really very proud and gratified to receive this distinction.” Nancy started her career in insurance in 2005. She made the move to Liberty Seguros a year ago as she believed, “it was time to change to a progressive Spanish company as committed as myself to looking after the ex-patriot.” Nancy is a shining example of how an ex-pat can successfully manage a business in Spain, even through hard times. She is active in her local community and has also found the time to perfect her Spanish language skills. “The next Liberty award ceremony and workshop will be held in Madrid, in Spring 2011. I have a lot to say, so I thought that I’d work on my Spanish so that management would understand at least most of it!” PAGE 26

GENERAL ENQUIRIES 678 490 217 CHANEL - Female, mix pointer type, born approx. 1/2008. Abandoned with another young female dog. Chanel is a people dog and likes contact and attention and going for walks. She would be best homed alone or perhaps with another male dog as she can be bossy with some female dogs.
BRAM - Male pointer cross, born approx. 8/ 2008. Found tied up by a heavy chain along with two other dogs that were all frightened, entangled and choking. A people friendly dog, Bram does not get on well with all other dogs so is better homed as an only dog or with a female. He really enjoys his daily walks. AUSTIN - Male Boxer, born approx. 2002. This friendly older chap hides his years well. Playful and sociable, Austin would make a super addition to your family. He likes to go for walks, cuddling and hanging around with you. Requires daily eye medication due to a chronic condition.
CHOCO - Male mixed breed, born approx. 7/ 2008. Was found tied to an electric pylon as a small puppy. Friendly and energetic, this extroverted young dog is active and loves to play. Best in a home where he can have time spent with him.
Desperately seeking soft floors - Hooch, one of our favourite aging gentlemen, is in desperate need of somewhere to live out his sunset years. He’s been with us for a while and is suffering from living on concrete floors. Our vet has given him a check-up and is recommending a loving home with soft floors as the best treatment for him. Can you offer him this? He would be no trouble as he’s very good natured, doesn’t bark and likes the quiet life. He’s going a tad blind in one eye and snoozing in the sun is his favourite pastime so a quiet home would be ideal. If you can offer him this he’ll repay you with devoted love and companionship. Like to meet him? Phone Di to arrange a time.
Mamie and Maisie, mother and daughter, rescued earlier this year need a loving home. Mamie was seen begging sweets and biscuits from children and taking them to her daughter, a 6 week old puppy. Even months later, she is still watching her daughter eat first. Please help this lovely pair.
PUPPY RESCUE in SPAIN Calle Málaga, Albox, 04800
PURDY - left tied to the kennel gates, about 6 months old, lovely young female, just wants to play and be with you.
CHUMBO - Male goat herd type, born approx. 7/2007. Chumbo is a little shy at first with people so just needs to get to know you. Gets on well with other dogs and likes to play ball. He is generally a quiet and unobtrusive dog. DEXTER - Male German shepherd pointer cross, born approx. 10/2008. This handsome tri-coloured dog has size and presence, and a super friendly character. He is playful and sociable with both people and other dogs and has an easy-going nature.
DELFO - Male, terrier, born approx. 11/ 09. A friendly dog of a nice size, Delfo adores human company and gets along with most other dogs. He is active and playful and has shown his agility by climbing out of his pen.

I like Christmas. It is the only time of the year when I know I’m going to be left alone to my own devices - the Higher Authority will be busy from dawn to dusk in the kitchen creating the sort of feast that even Henry the Eighth might have thought was a little excessive. Then there are the family phone calls, neighbours coming and going, (eventually) not to mention the allday televisual diet of ever more dramatic and unbelievable soaps. All this frenetic activity suits me fine. I can remain unnoticed while all around me is chaos. I am becalmed in the eye of the storm, and very comfortable with it! At dawn’s first crack She is up, in and out of the bathroom faster than a hydrophobic greyhound, muttering ‘Must get on’ as she engages battle with various innocent vegetables, and a totally blameless turkey. I know not to query the quantity of food that she thinks we are going to need to keep us from Yuletide starvation. One year I pointed out, not unreasonably I feel, the direct correlation between the quantity of food consumed and the expansion of her waistline. She fixed me with a basilisk stare which turned every joint
CHRISTMAS IN SPAIN Most people in Spain go to Midnight Mass or 'La Misa Del Gallo' (The Mass of the Rooster). So called because a rooster is supposed to have crowed the night that Jesus was born. Most families eat their main Christmas meal on Christmas Eve before the service. The traditional Spanish Christmas dinner is 'Pavo Trufado de Navidad' which is Turkey stuffed with truffles (the mushrooms not the chocolate ones!) In Galicia the most popular meal for Christmas Eve and for Christmas Day is seafood. After the midnight service, people walk through the streets carrying torches, playing guitars and beating on tambourines and drums. One Spanish saying is 'Esta noche es Noche-Buena, y no es noche de dormir', meaning 'Tonight is the good night and it is not meant for sleeping!' Different languages are spoken in different regions in Spain. In Spanish Happy/Merry Christmas is 'Feliz Navidad'; in Catalan it's 'Bon Nadal'; and in Galician 'Bo Nadal'. December 28th is 'Día de los santos inocentes' or 'Day of the Innocent Saints' and is very like Aprils Fool’s Day in the UK. People try to trick each other into believing silly stories and jokes. Newspapers and TV stations also run silly stories. If you trick someone, you can call them 'Inocente, inocente'. The 28th of December is also when people remember the babies that were killed on the orders of King Herod when he was trying to kill the baby Jesus. New Year's Eve is called 'Nochevieja' or 'The Old Night' in Spain and one special tradition is that you eat 12 grapes with the 12 strokes of the clock at Midnight! Each grape represents a month of the coming year, so if you eat the twelve grapes, you are said to be lucky in the new year. Apart from Christmas, the other festival that is celebrated, on 6th January, is called Epiphany or Kings' Day. This is the twelfth night after Christmas. In Spanish, Epiphany is called 'Fiesta de los tres Reyes Mages', 'The festival of the three Magic Kings', and is
in my body to water, but said nothing. Next day I found that I was on a low fat no alcohol diet. It took a very expensive New Year present to put the situation right. I know how to play Christmas. I am Invisible, but Indispensable. I answer the phone and the door. In each case that is all I do, she assumes social control immediately, and I can happily get back to my can and my leisurely quest to find the faulty Christmas tree light. But it is at Christmas Lunch time that I excel. I pour the drinks, and I carve the turkey, and that makes me Lord of the Table. The Higher Authority has expended hours of time and gallons of sweat to produce the largesse on offer. She has washed and peeled, rolled and roasted, baked and basted, and somehow still managed to find the time to transform from a Dough Maiden to a slightly more mature Nigella, perfectly presented without the assistance of a studio team of make-up artistes. Guests may politely congratulate the Higher Authority on the décor, but they save their highest praise for the quality of the wine and the tastiness of the turkey - and direct that praise in my direction, even though anyone who knows me knows that I have had nothing whatsoever to do with the acceptability of either. Yet every dog has his day, and my day is Christmas Lunchtime. Yes, I like Christmas.
the celebration of when the King’s or Wise men brought gifts to the baby Jesus. Children have some presents on Christmas Day, but most are opened at Epiphany. Some children believe that the Kings bring presents to them at Epiphany. They write letters to the Kings on Boxing Day, December 26th, asking for toys and presents. And on Epiphany Eve (January 5th) they leave shoes on windowsills or balconies or under the Christmas Tree to be filled with presents. Gifts are often left by children for the Kings, a class of Cognac for each King, a satsuma and some walnuts. Sometimes a bucket of water is left for the camels that bring the Kings! If the children have been bad, the Kings might leave pieces of coal made out of sugar in the presents! Some big towns and cities have Epiphany Parades where each King has a float in the shape of a camel. In the Basque country, on Christmas Eve children's presents are delivered by a magical man called Olentzero. He's a big, overweight man wearing a beret and smoking a pipe. He dresses like a Basque farmer. In the Catalan area of Spain there's a Christmas character called 'Tio de Nadal' (the Christmas log) or he's sometimes known as 'Caga tio' (the pooping log!). It's a small hollow log propped up on two legs with a smiling face painted on one end. From the 8th December (the Feast of the Immaculate Conception) Catalan families give the log a few morsels of food to 'eat' and a blanket to keep it warm. On Christmas Day or Christmas Eve, the log then 'gives out' small gifts! People sing songs and hit the log with sticks to help its 'digestion' and the log drops sweets, nuts, and dried fruits. When garlic or an onion falls out of the log, all of the treats are finished for the year. A special cake called 'Roscón' is eaten at Epiphany. Roscón means 'ring shape roll'. It is very doughy and is bought from a bakery on Epiphany morning. Roscón can be filled with chocolate or cream and contain a little gift.

Tel: 950 475 110 INCEPTION Acclaimed film maker Christopher Nolan directs an international cast in this sci-fi action rollercoaster that travels around the globe and into the world of dreams. Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is the best there is at extraction: stealing valuable secrets inside the subconscious during the mind's vulnerable dream state. His skill has made him a covert player in industrial espionage but has also made him a fugitive and cost him dearly. Now he may get a second chance if he can do the impossible: inception, planting an idea rather than stealing one. If they succeed, Cobb and his team could pull off the perfect crime. But no planning or expertise can prepare them for a dangerous enemy who seems to predict their every move. An enemy only Cobb could have seen coming.
Also coming in December ... • Twilight Eclipse • Salt • The Expendables • Night and Day • The Sorcerer’s Apprentice • Jonah Hex • Shrek Forever After
The word Turquoise is derived from the Greek word "Turkois" which means "Turkish" so called because it was first brought from Turkey. Turquoise is the only gemstone belonging to the phosphates family. It is formed over millions of years by a chemical reaction that occurs when water leaks through rocks which contain specific minerals such as copper and aluminium. The percentages of the minerals in the rock dictate the gemstone’s shade. The traditional colour associated with the Turquoise is the sky blue colour but it can also be found in blue green, through various shades of green including apple green, to greenish and yellowish gray. Turquoise is associated with prosperity, success, happiness and good fortune. The traditional metaphysical properties are open communication, protection against all diseases, regeneration, and strengthening. Its healing properties are reputed to be effective for health problems relating to the throat, lungs, asthma, teeth, depression and infection. The Turquoise is also used to enhance creativity, serenity and spiritual bonding.

Paws-Patas would like to thank all our publishers, the public, and the army of volunteers, for their support in the last year. Merry Christmas and here’s to a fruitful New Year to one and all. The Paws Shop will be closed from 1.30pm on 23rd December and re-open at 10.30am on the 4th January.
JANUARY On Friday 5th November the Rose Singers presented 'Out of my Dreams - An Autumn Serenade' at Camping Los Gallardos. A varied programme of music was received with enthusiasm by a large audience. This is a very talented small choir with a very varied repertoire. Lively pieces including 'Alexander’s Ragtime Band', 'The Rhythm of Life' and 'The Wraggle Taggle Gypsies O', contrasted beautifully with 'Ojos Negros y Grandes' - a traditional Spanish piece and Mozart's 'Ave Verum'. During the course of the evening the choir of thirteen members sang solos, and in various combinations of duets, trios, quartets and as a whole group. A truly memorable solo was given by Lyn Ferris with the hauntingly beautiful 'Memory' from 'Cats'. Lyn, together with Sue Mehmet, entertained with the 'Cat Duet' by Rossini and Sue also amused with a wholly different interpretation of Mozart putting words to his music telling a tale of '18th century Mojácar'. On a lighter side Ruth Wood read 'Only the English would have invented this Language'. Pam Peters piano solo, always a highlight of the Rose Singers concerts, delighted all once again. The whole concert was a most polished performance and congratulations must go to their conductor, Alison Jackson, for her skilled leadership. By way of raffles each night money was raised at the concert for PAWS and at the performance at the Kimrick on Saturday 6th November the choir again sang to a full house and money raised on this occasion was for MACS. If you would like to hear the choir in the near future they will be singing a Christmas concert at Los Gallardos Camping on Saturday 18th of December at 7.30pm where you will be invited to join in with some of your favourite carols. Another evening not to be missed!

Birthstone: Garnet The word garnet is derived from the Greek word "granatum" which means "pomegranate seed" reflecting the shape and colour of the crystals. Garnets are a group of hard glassy minerals (silicates of various metals) used as gemstones and as an abrasive. The garnet family contains 7 major types and are not just confined to the associated deep red colour, garnets can be found in nearly all other colours including orange, yellow, green, purple, brown, black, and colourless. Some of the properties with which the garnet is associated are purity, truth, faithfulness and friendship. The traditional metaphysical properties are awareness, commitment, regeneration, insight and removing negativity. Its healing properties are reputed to be effective for health problems relating to the blood, heart, lungs and infection. The garnet is also used to enhance sensuality and sexuality.

www.advertisermojacar.com BRIAN ‘SHOWMAN’ Amongst Mojácar's expatriate community of the latter nineties, the most popular late night bar was undoubtedly Showmans. The "Showman's" real name was Brian Collinge, and he had been a free-lance DJ with London's Capital Radio, and later gained fame with Radio Diario in Ibiza, where he also founded a music bar. Then, in 1996/7 Brian decided to up-sticks and move to Mojácar, together with his wife, Fred, and quite a few of his friends. Once here, he took over the premises underneath the Mediterraneo restaurant, nowadays the Alibi Italian restaurant and, helped by his friends, began extensively to alter it, whilst being watched with interest by us locals. The resulting music bar, complete with a changing room from which the flamboyant Brian "Showman" Collinge would emerge to spin the discs between midnight and "godknows-when", soon became a great hit - and Brian, complete with his trade-mark hairstyle, became one of the areas "Fixtures"! Every year, on January 8th, the anniversary of Elvis Presley's birth, Brian would throw a party with an Elvis flavour and free food for all. What many people didn't realise was that the party wasn't really for Elvis - it was Brian's own birthday party! Showman's was invariably the final stop on a night out; the place where punters met up to socialise; the place to be swamped with the heavy throb of lively music, with a bias towards the era of rock and roll, whilst meeting and chatting to friends. Note well that last statement: Brian understood exactly the black art of how to set his graphic equaliser to allow people to talk over his music without shouting themselves hoarse. Brian eventually left Mojácar in 2002, in order to settle in Scotland with his lady friend, Sheelagh, but he was a frequent return visitor, usually accompanied by Sheelagh and his side-kick "Dangerous" Dave. Brian had three children, Cherylann, Lee and Reece. And 3 grandchildren, Jed, Roman and Summer Rose. Sheelagh tells me that, "Brian's small funeral in Scotland went rather well. He had always joked that he wanted to be chucked away in a cardboard box ... and that is what he got ... a cardboard coffin ... for all the world just like a cardboard box. We invited everyone to write on it during the service. We went in with Elvis' American Trilogy ... fabulous words. Then Brian's daughter talked about her Dad, and then we did the scribbling with more Elvis and a Celine Dion track that he used to play a lot in the bar, almost like a prayer, called "I'm Your Angel". On the way out, with Brian's favourite hat perched on top of the coffin, we had the Spaniels song that he played at the end of his night in the bar, and in fact at gigs he did here in Scotland, when he could still breathe ... "Good night sweetheart it's time to go."

Deborah Gail Marston, aged 50, formally of The Bengal Palace Restaurant, A Plaice in the Sun Fish & Chip Shop and The Irish Rover Show Bar, Mojácar Playa has lost her battle with cancer. Debbie had a ten-month fight but sadly passed away on 2nd November, just before she was due to walk down the aisle to marry the love of her life, and partner of 16 years, Ray Swift. Ray, son Vincenzo and other close family members were with her when she passed away. Her dying wish was to be laid to rest in her wedding gown, and as a celebration to her life, the congregation wore wedding attire. Debbie touched the lives of everyone she met. She was an amazing person, full of zest and strong-willed. She fought right until the very end. Debbie's funeral took place at Colehill's C of E Church on Wednesday 10th November. The ceremony was extremely well attended which showed her popularity with her family, friends and the communities she was part of. Debbie had a lot of friends here in Mojácar and will be sadly missed by all. Debbie you will always be in our hearts, prayers and thoughts. We will miss your bubbly personality, the way you made us laugh but most of all, we will miss you! Thank you for all you have done for us both here in Spain and the U.K. Sleep well. All our love Sandra and Cookie.
FAREWELL TO OUR FRIEND CYRIL HEATH 1934 - 2010 Over 80 members and friends said farewell to Cyril on 28th October 2010. Also present were Cyril’s stepson, Steve and his wife Jo, plus friends (Cyril pictured here at his Dave & Sheila (ex Los ‘local’ Los Amigos) Amigos) and George. Roy Hatten spoke of Cyril’s time as a member of the Club for the past 12 years and since the Club moved to Turre, as committee member and Bar Manager. Cyril was always first at the Club to open up, to put the equipment out on the greens and to put the kettle on. He was always ready to lend a hand wherever needed, and was a good friend to us all and a very ‘gentle’ man. His stepson told us of his time as a postmaster prior to moving to Spain 13 years ago with his wife Daphne who unfortunately died in 2000. At his funeral in Swindon in October some of his old customers attended because, “Cyril had always looked after them so well in the Post Office.” Cyril will be a very hard act to follow and we will always remember him. Cyril died in September after becoming ill with cancer a year ago. He moved back to the UK in the Spring to be looked after by his family. Cabrera Lawn Bowling Club PAGE 33

‘Captain Brian Cuba’ has been out a few times over the last 7 days. One trip with five members of the ‘Albox Fishing Club’, ‘Squiddly Sid’, ‘Dennis the Menace’, Steve, Ken and Dave. They all caught fish and Brian managed to anchor over one of our favourite holes although for once it didn’t produce the goods, well except for a decent red snapper. Other fish caught on the day were combers, pandoras and weavers. ‘I also went out with Brian this week and was joined by ‘Paul the Rope’, ‘Pueblo Neville’ and ‘Pulpo Basil’. Basil got the nickname pulpo (Spanish for octopus) because his first catch was just that, an 8lb-ish octopus (see photo). Other fish caught on the day were combers, a blue mouth, weavers and lots of pandoras. I think the good times have passed now and the 8 weeks from mid September to mid November are for sure the best for bottom fishing. Paul did however get bitten off by something big and I lost a whopper while jigging. It was only on for a few seconds and either threw the hook (most likely) or it pulled out. It has happened to me before while about 150 feet off the bottom jigging a small weaver took my lure. Two surprises there, weavers are bottom feeders and so must have followed my jig up from the bottom and the weaver was only a
few inches longer than the jig! Captains ‘Graham Gnome’ and ‘Hissing Sid’ took Ex Capitano Mel (Villaricos Bobby Ball!) out on their Garrucha moored boat. They weren’t out long so only caught a few fish including a couple of red snappers. ‘London Bill’ says Macenas Beach is fishing really well and he’s had some good palometes and sea bass out, all his fish fell to a weighted silver spoon. ‘Abbey Angling’ club fished the River Segura in Murcia town and the winner used maggot with the feeder method to catch just over 26lbs. Cold air temperatures (6c) and cooler water is good reason for the river fishing hard. Get used to it boys! Abbey’s second match was held on the drain/ canal off the N332 by Mercadona supermarket. This match was won with 14.1/2lbs fishing the pole and sweetcorn. Northerly winds and cool temperatures again to blame. There was a ‘Rods and Reels’ club match on the Eden Canal stretch of the River Segura in Murcia and the match was won with 26lbs. Tactics were pellet and maggot on the pole, it was hard fishing and 6 anglers had dry nets. A second match on the river, but in the town, was won with 43.2/
3lbs fishing the pole using corn. During this match they had two, believed to be Seprona Representatives (environmental police) turn up and from what they understood, complained about the cars along the bank. There was a Spanish angler fishing who immediately moved his car, so we all proceeded to do likewise. If in future you park your car on the bank, you may have to suffer a visit from the police. The ‘Anglers Together Club’ held a Xmas friendly match on the River Segura in Murcia Town, 15 members fished and Doug Hornblow won with 28.1/2lbs. I’ve been asked what species are being weighed in these Murcia bags and I’m told it’s carp and barbel with the odd goldfish thrown in. It is interesting that on one occasion above officials checked for the licenses of British match fishermen and ignored other anglers fishing with up to 5 rods each and probably no license or insurance, oh well ‘Esta Vida’. Someone driving his car was stopped at the roundabout by the Red Cross Centre on Mojácar Playa. The Guardia officer asked him for all his papers and then searched his car. In
the boot was his fishing tackle, he was firstly accused of carrying a dangerous weapon (no fine) and then asked to produce his fishing license, where are their brains? Anyway keep your licenses or at least a copy with your fishing gear at all times. The Albox Fishing Club (sea and coarse) meetings will take place on Wednesdays at 4pm at the Syedpur Restaurant, Albox, every two weeks from the 1st December. Checkout Mojacar’s weather and sea conditions here on the Beachcomber’s webcam. www.almeriafreeads.com/ webcam For further information on any of the above or to find out about beach, boat or coarse fishing licenses, see John at the Beachcomber Bar Restaurant on Mojácar Playa or tel. 950 473 099. In case of difficulty reaching me (probably out fishing) ask staff for my mobile number. See more about the Beachcomber at: www.beachcomber-restaurant.com Tight Lines, Beachcomber John.
'Dangerous Brian' loves his new found hobby of sea fishing from a boat and I can tell you he is going to make one good angler. He misses nothing and when 'Captain Brian Cuba' saw him pumping his rod he asked how he knew how to do that. "I was watching John," he said. P.S. The fish, by the way, is a forkbeard.
