From the Editor H

appy New Year! I hope you don’t mind my dog, Syd, taking pride of place in my picture spot but I am proud to announce that this dog, which I bred myself, has just celebrated his 15th birthday! Not that he was very bovvered! As long as his meals were served on time that was enough of a party for him. I have two new looks for 2011. First a new logo designed by Freelance Designers Spain, thank you, Jonathan. Second, a newlook me, courtesy of Julian of Hair Design - he said that for as long as he’s known me I’ve looked the same - well not anymore!! I have been well and truly up-dated and everybody so far has said how much they like it and how it suits me. Thank you, Julian. Obviously Valentine’s Day had to be the theme for this month’s issue and inside you will find a themed quiz on the matter. Plus a couple of new things to entertain and inform.

As always let me know of your goings on, Ian is only too happy to take photos for you or, feel free to send in your own, good quality though, please. And any suggestions are welcome for items that may be of interest to other readers. I guess that’s it for now. Don’t give up on those resolutions. I made mine nearly 8 months ago when I stopped smoking and so far have managed to stick to it so the latest smoking ban suits me fine. Oh yes, do try not to send me so many Valentine cards this year. I could hardly get out of my house last year, it was like a snowdrift outside the door, ha!ha! Until next time, Tracey

♣Firstly, it seems to be official …

dogs are not allowed on the beach at any time of the year. Quite how they plan on policing that remains to be seen! More official news … from Sunday 9th January, Choice FM, who have established themselves over 4 years of broadcasting to the local communities of Mojácar and the surrounding area, have joined the BayRadio network. You can now listen to BayRadio throughout Costa Almeria on 91.5fm, 107.3fm and 95.5fm. Stage Director Otfried Laux of El Teatro Indalo Players, Mojácar is starting his project OLIVER TWIST (but not as a musical). The play will be staged at the end of 2011 in the new theatre of the Kimrick. He is arranging the story so that he only needs 14 or 15 actors, to include teenagers, children and adults. For the whole project he needs between 30 to 40 people for front of house, backstage or on the stage. He is looking for enthusiastic people who are willing to work not for pay, but for the applause and success of the project. His wish list is as follows: • For the scenery, sound and light he is looking for people (not necessarily professionals) who can work with electricity, wood and metal. • People who can do make up and props. • He is looking for a Stage Assistant who will coordinate the building of the stage and liaise with the lighting and sound technicians and organise the actors during performances. • And a Production Manager who will coordinate all areas: scenery, makeup lighting, sound and costumes. A workshop was scheduled for the end of January to prepare people for their role and to form a team who will be able to work together. The rehearsals were also scheduled to start with this workshop which will be interrupted during the summer for two months. Anyone interested in this project contact: otfriedlaux@gmail.com or tel: 950 529 198 or 670 629 042. Meanwhile rehearsals have started for the Indalo Players next production of two one act plays "Holmes Sweet Holmes" by Jim Sperinck and "Heavens Above" by Diana Raffle. These will be performed at The Kimrick on Thurs 7th, Fri 8th, Sat 9th and Sun 10th of April 2011. Tickets will be 10€ and

will be on sale during March. The Sunday performance hopefully will be a matinee giving people the chance to have lunch before the plays. Staying at the Kimrick the cinema nights are well under way with two films being shown this month. On Sunday 6th at 7pm, ‘Valentine’s Day’ and on Friday 11th, ‘The King’s Speech’ at the later time of 8.30pm. At the first ACEM (Mojácar Business Association) meeting of 2011 the annual Dinner Dance was scheduled for March 26th. During the evening an announcement is to be made of an initiative to help increase tourism to Mojácar and a presentation of ‘Mojácar Oscars’ – these are to be presented to those who have done the most for the area over a 12 month period. Tickets will be on sale in February. Due to the success of last year’s Mojácar Tapas Trail, this year it is to be extended to the whole month of July and it is hoped to increase the number of bars and restaurants taking part to 25. To be confirmed is the date of the fashion show, probably sometime in April. The meeting concluded with the news that membership fees have been reduced from 10€ per month to 6€ per month for the next 12 months. For more details contact Karin Schroter on 950 478 935. Sonia of Indole (situated on the strip next door to Aladdin’s) has opened a new shop next to the Cajamurcia bank. Note: selling the same kind of items, this new shop is as well as not instead of. Pamela’s Line Dance Club stayed fairly low-key in the second half of last year but, for 2011 it is the Club’s ¬intention to continue with the ¬Monday evening classes at The ¬Piano Bar in Turre and have a large number of very regular ‘Social Dances’, mainly on Saturday ¬evenings, but possibly sometimes on Friday evenings, using several ¬venues. As some of these Dances may only be booked one or two weeks in advance, anyone interested in attending should contact Pamela directly on 950 398 076. News from Zak’s Plaice in Garrucha. Paul and Pam are going to continue serving their 5€ Specials - fish, chips & mushy peas, pie or pasty & chips, kebab meat & chips with a choice of sauces. The cheesy chips and potato scallops are proving ever popular and kids’ portions are also available. While you’re waiting you may want to take a look at their Charity Book Shelf comprising a selection of secondhand books for 1€ - the money from which is to be distributed between various local charities. If you don’t want to wait telephone your order through and Paul will have it ready for you to pay and go. Telephone number is 950 133 193. Photographer Ian has had an idea to produce a DVD specific to individual bars that they can play through their TV continually all day to promote forthcoming events, etc. Ian did a quick disc for The New Kimrick’s function room opening to play though his cinema system and it was very well received. Not to be outdone – Richard is organising an Open Pool Competition for Friday 25th February. Entry fee is 10€ and there will be prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Call Richard on 673 195 872 to register by the 20th so the format can be arranged. I gather that the Cave bar is closing for a few days, and will probably re-open in mid-February with Jim in charge again. Meantime, Sarah's Spanish classes have moved next door, to the Cowboy Cocina. Julio's bar is this year's run-away leader of the pool league as it approaches the half-way stage. Petter has had so many requests for his route notes, both via The Advertiser and from direct contacts, that he’s decided to create a complete article along the lines of his old "Driving North" column in the Talisman. It will either be published in the magazine or posted to his web-site, which is currently undergoing a small re-vamp. To overcome the new smoking ban Miguel, of Los Arcos on Mojácar playa, is creating a smoker's club down the alley beside the bar. It will even sport a carambola table and of course a card table. Winter has at last struck. As The Advertiser went to press the overnight temperature was dropping to a chilly 7 degrees, and a few miles inland there is a morning frost!

The Entertainer Online is a locally written website with news, comment, opinion and essays about life here and is updated daily. The site also has local weather and the acid humour of Rambeau’s blog, together with three hundred useful links about Spain. For people who live here. www.theentertaineronline.com

The news according to The Entertainer Online - Most of the following is true!

Garrucha - 150 Years old In the long history of our area, Garrucha is a relatively new municipality and it was only separated from its host, Vera, on January 1st 1861, that is, 150 years ago. An order from the king on 16th March 1858 to the authorities in Vera to allow the port to secede took its time as the Vera Town Hall wriggled on the hook. Why did Garrucha look for independence? According to this interesting article in La Voz de Almería, because of pingües interes económicos para controlar las rentas de los ventajosos negocios que empezaban a florecer: la minería, el comercio marítimo, la aduna, los viceconsulados, el pescado de las jábegas. Economic advantage from the mining interests, the customs house, the vice-consulates (British, French, Dutch and German), the sea-routes and the sea-fishing. Until recently, Garrucha was smaller than now, in fact the municipality was only about half of the extension of the town (the port belongs to the State) giving it a theoretical population density higher than Hong Kong. Mojácar and Vera both gave some land to the town in 2002. Legalization, Legislation As Helen Prior and her husband Len looked forward to the third anniversary of the demolition of their retirement home in Vera - they have lived since then in the garage that somehow escaped the annihilation of their villa the Junta de Andalucía is slowly waking up to the fact that this simple act of institutional vandalism back in January 2008 has cost the region billions. Well, sort of - it’s still the case that the ecologists (beyond the patently illegal 20 storey Hotel Algarrobico in Carboneras, of course) - have the moral authority to drive the rules on ‘illegal homes’ and the ‘ley de costas’. The Seville government is preparing a new protocol on the 300,000 supposed irregular dwellings across the region, with individual studies to see whether a home can be ‘regularized’ (as we say in public employeespeak). Houses under risk include those in the ‘Ley de Costas’ (carried out arbitrarily), and those homes built in ‘protected areas’, ‘non-urbanisable land’ and ‘rural zones’. These areas are sometimes flood zones, or natural

parks, but other times fall to Seville’s rules regarding the density of urban land or even the number of houses allowable in a given municipality (only cities and bank-owned homes, it seems, are free from these controls). The study which comes from the Department of Obras Públicas y de la Vivienda, will recommend that those houses which can be legalised will be allowed to do so, with the costs passed on to either the builders (yea, right!) or the owners. The rest - well... either demolition or, uh... Wasting Public Funds The underground car park in Garrucha has been four years without any work done to finish it, and now needs another squirt of money, estimated at a million euros. What a mess! At least it isn’t quite as useless as the one they had planned for the square up by the church in Mojácar last summer (which will probably return to haunt us after the elections if the PP get in again). Knock Knock. Who’s There? Not been bothered this weekend by a stern-looking couple at the gate? That’s because Almería’s 2,500 Jehovah’s Witnesses have been out at their annual bash at the Palacio de Congresos y Exposiciones in Aguadulce. Seventeen new people joined the flock, with a simple submersion in the Palacio’s swimming pool, according to the report. So if somebody shows up on your doorstep looking a trifle wet, lend them a towel. Eddie Fowlie Eddie Fowlie, owner of the El Dorado Hotel, died on the 22nd January in Carboneras. He was 89. Eddie is best known for turning Carboneras into Aqaba during the filming of David Lean’s ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ in 1962 (Peter O’Toole lived for three months in a house buried under the Hotel Algarrobico). Eddie’s profession as set-designer also allowed him to build many sets for ‘Doctor Zhivago’ (shot in part in nearby Guadix), ‘The Bridge Over the River Kwai’ and many others. A biography of Eddie has just been released, written by the Costa de Almería’s own Richard Torné and called ‘David Lean’s dedicated maniac. Memoirs of a film specialist’. Local Radio (all sorts) There’s another English-language radio for Mojácar and surrounds. It’s called Bay Radio. Here, according to its webpage, are its Top Five ‘ExPat Chart’ hits: Katy Perry with ‘Firework’, Rihanna (ft Drake) and ‘Whats My Name’, Nicole Sherzinger and ‘Poison’, Kesha with his/their immortal ‘We R Who We R’, and at 5th on your fab faves, there’s Plan B wiv ‘Love Goes Down’. Don’t fancy that? Try Radio Costa at 105.6FM. Music for the Grown Ups.

Has anyone seen the lonely flamingo down on Vera Playa. Florence, as she has been named, has been there for about two weeks. The fact that she is white is thought to be due to a deficiency in diet – I looked this up and this is what it said, “While flamingos are known to eat small fish, shrimp and snails, they are primarily vegetarians. They consume vast quantities of algae, and this is what makes them pink. Without the "food colouring," flamingos are actually white. Flamingos in captivity are, as a result of algae deprivation, quite a bit paler than their wild cousins. Zoos attempt to keep their flamingo stocks in the pink by feeding them carotene to compensate for the algae they'd get in their natural habitats." (so now you know! - Ed)

elcome to 2011. I hope you all had a good Crimble and new year. I’m afraid we must start the Navigating year off with a warning. I have been hearing some worrying news about some problems with social networking sites. I don’t think I should mention any particular site by name, what with lawyers costing so much these days, their bills potentially feeling, simultaneously, like a slap in the FACE and the cheque BOOK. These sites quite often tempt you with all sorts of applications that offer promises to be fulfilled once you have simply ticked a box that then allows god knows who to access your contact details, your photographs, all your personal details and quite possibly a good deal more. One such example of

this is an application that, if it actually worked, would tell you who has been stalking you or at least tell you who has been visiting your “profile” page and also how often they do it. I know three people who have committed to this application and were never told anything at all about who is visiting their profile page. But they had still agreed to allow fairly full access to their account and its information. You have been warned. Now we move to a more serious matter. I am talking about a close brush with death I had in January. My close friends and family will vouch that I had a near mortal case of “Man-Flu”. Through luck, tenacious self pity, self indulgent grizzling and the regular administration of large medicinal brandies I managed to pull through. My survival was also due largely to a fantastic new website called www.manflu.org.uk - these guys are real life savers. The site has lots of good advice about how to deal with those people that cannot comprehend the depth of one’s suffering during these precarious weeks and months. Similarly, manflu.org.uk

will also give help on how to educate those that think “you just have a cold”. To clear up any doubts about the matter of whether you are just a big woose or not there is a questionnaire for potential victims of Man-Flu and Man-Flu’s victims carers too. It is very important that carers/wives grasp the severity of the victim’s predicament as early as possible. The guys at manflu.org.uk have cleverly organised their questioning into well thought out sections. The main reason for this is to filter out the sceptics. Fellas, I know this is going be hard to believe, but there are people out there (mostly women) that believe ManFlu doesn’t even exist. The way the questionnaire is laid out should leave little room for doubt about whether you have Man-Flu or not. In fact when I took the test I found that I not only had manflu but I may well have had it since childhood. There was no grey area whatsoever, about me being in the advanced and most horrific stages of the illness and I thought it best, at the time of my martyrdom to write a will and make my peace with God. The point is that without www.manflu.org.uk I

probably wouldn’t be here to tell you about it today. I am going to have to break with convention now and not talk about a website. It’s just an idea that I’m going to tell you. The idea is making your own calendar. The number of free websites on which you can do this are legion. For this reason there really is no point in recommending any one particular website, they are all pretty much the same meat, with slightly different gravy. Simply use your browser and type “make your own calendar”. They all work the same way. You choose the format i.e. yearly, monthly or daily and then upload pictures from your own files to correspond to each page. Its going to cost you a bit in ink to print them but the cost is going to be comparable to buying one from a shop and don’t forget that because Tracey decided she should take a month off you only have to print eleven months out now. If you do come across any websites that our readers should know about do let me know at advertisernavigator@msn.com Until next time, El Navegador.

their ear leathers prevent a free flow of air. TREATMENT - you need to be able to inspect your dog’s ears to decide what you need to do. If it is a small dog then restrain him by wrapping him in a large thick towel with just the head exposed. If the dog is larger then it may be necessary to get someone to help you. If you notice blood or extreme redness and irritation or the dog is obviously in pain the best thing to do is consult your vet. If you decide to try the home remedy and there is no improvement after a couple of days then you should consult your vet. An ear infection is an emergency when your dog is in pain, you cannot touch or look in the ears or they are red and swollen and/or your dog has a head tilt. Also important if other symptoms are noted such as loss of appetite, acting lethargic, vomiting and/or diarrhoea or if there are any other physical abnormalities. HANDY TIP - If you have a young puppy or are thinking of getting a puppy it is always useful to get the puppy used to being handled. Clean his ears gently on a regular basis and use a small, soft toothbrush to clean his teeth. Brush his coat regularly, even if there is no significant length

vinegar and water. Soak a piece of cotton wool or gauze in the vinegar and water, squeeze out the surplus and wipe gently around the exterior of the ear, use a cotton bud to clean out the crevices, the cotton bud should never be pushed down into the ear canal, except briefly if there is significant wax just inside the canal – but you should ALWAYS be able to see the cotton tip of bud. If the trouble needs deeper cleaning then an ear cleaning solution specially for the purpose can be put into the ear canal then gently massage the base of the ear. (If gently massaging the base of the ear causes any signs of discomfort or the dog cries out in pain, the problem needs immediate veterinary attention). Wipe the dirt away in the same manner as above. PLEASE NOTE that only products made to be used in the ear should be administered. In the beginning it is beneficial to clean the ears 3 times a day then 2 times a day as the problem diminishes. It is always easier to clean the ears regularly as maintenance takes a few minutes. Some breeds of dogs suffer more than others and those with long floppy ears such as the cocker spaniel, etc. are a good example as Hotel Playa Rio Abajo

EAR INFECTIONS - medically known as Otitis Externa, being external inflammation of the outer ear is quite common in dogs. A sign of problems with the ears is shaking of the head and/or rubbing the ears along the floor or on the furniture. CAUSES OF EAR INFECTIONS Infections of the ear can be caused by ear mites, fungal organisms and/ or bacteria, but also water or hair in the ears, foreign material and general skin diseases can set up trouble. More serious are traumas and tumours and if the dog suffers from an auto-immune disease. If the dog has an allergy this can result in problems with the ears and a cause of this can be food so a useful tactic can be to try a different brand/protein source of food. It is possible to treat minor ear problems at home. Many organisms that live in the ear prefer an alkaline environment so a home remedy for cleaning is to mix equal parts of white

of hair, it gives him a feel good factor and helps you to bond with your puppy. Always make it enjoyable and part of a game and reward him with a treat if he is good. A Mystery Admirer? Valentine’s Day? What’s that all about? If you ask me, it’s a cheap ploy by the manufacturers of non-essential goods to add a glossy heart and an inflated price tag to their ordinary products, and foist them off on to a gullible public. The Higher Authority doesn’t see it that way. She expects the full three acts, complete with symphony orchestra. Our relationship is built on compliance; she allows me to do all the heavy, dirty, outside or car-related jobs in return for food and clean bed linen. On the whole this suits me very well, so kow-towing to a tradition built around a priest who had his head chopped off by the Romans more than 1500 years ago seems a small price to pay. Each year, before the Christmas decorations have come down, I reserve a table at her favourite eatery. It has to be done then, for fear that the ‘best’ table will be taken by someone whose husband clearly cares more about his wife than yours truly does - or at least that will be her take on the situation. Then there are the chocolates. I know there will be hell to pay if I don’t buy any, so why, in Heaven’s name, does she have to scoff the lot, whilst simultaneously moaning about the damage that they are doing to her waistline. The prezzie is easy – get earrings, it seems that women, even the two eared variety, can never have too many earrings. But the card! Ah, there lies embarrassment! I shuffle the selection on offer, trying to surreptitiously select the one that is the cheapest while appearing to be expensive, and, in company with various other males of obviously married status, present it sheepishly at the counter. Oh, pray God that the assistant is a man of my age, who will have the good grace not to read the slush printed on the inside! Each year she picks the card from the mat, acts surprised, and asks innocently, ‘I wonder who this can be from?’ as I do my middle aged best to impersonate Gregory Peck. Now I know she’s not that stupid, she knows perfectly well that the card is my pathetic best effort at Romantic, so this year I’m going to give her something to think about - I’m going to buy two cards. I’m going to put one on the mat, and the other one I’m going to stuff under the front door. Two cards! She’ll never suspect that I bought two cards. For one of a very few times in our marriage, I will know something that she doesn’t. I can’t wait! Castillo of Jesus Navareno (18th century)

So ... my sign signified the commencement of the next chapter of my life and my spiritual path … I saw an ad in the Hairdresser’s Journal - “British Hairdressers wanted in the USA”. I immediately rang the number listed and spoke to the owner of the salon. He told me that I needed to send in a resumé and a photo. “What is a resumé” I replied. “I think you call them CVs over there.” After flitting through my photos to find the most flattering I jumped swiftly into my car and drove into town. My first stop was the library so that I could use one of their word processors to type out my CV. I then ran across town to the Federal Express office. I arrived out of breath, but managed to ask for my letter to be sent by overnight express to the USA. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that it would arrive before 10am the next day. The following morning I needed to wait until then to be able to call the salon which I found out was called “Hair on Broadway”. With sweaty palms I picked up the phone and spoke to Craig the owner. “Have you received my resumé?” I asked, “Yes! it looks pretty impressive” he replied. “What do I need to do next?” “I will ring you again once I have received all the CVs and then I am coming to the UK on March to interview.” “March, but it is now September” I exclaimed. His plan was however to visit the UK in March to attend a trade show. I was gutted as in my mind I was already living in New York. I tossed and turned all night and during that time I made a decision. I went into town first thing the next morning and asked for the next available flight to New York. There was nothing available until November fourth which seemed an eternity away. I then rushed home and made another phone call to “Hair on Broadway”. Craig answered the phone. “Hi Craig it’s Diana”. “Hi Diana” he said with a very sexy American accent, “How are you doing?” All in one breath I spewed out, “I’m fine, and I have made a decision to come over to see you and to show you what I can do. If you like what you see we can take it from there. My heart was beating ten to the dozen as I half expected him to tell me that I was crazy. But instead he answered, “Awesome! Can’t wait to meet you.” “Great” I said, not quite believing what I had heard .... November came. I had sold my car and belongings which gave me a nice wad of money to get me started and before l knew it I was at Gatwick airport, checked in and awaiting my flight to JFK New York! Unbeknown to me then, I now believe that this was part of my rediscovering Atlantis. Part of the Atlantean civilisation has sunk to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. My spiritual energy became much stronger whilst living in the states and I feel that I have a real affinity with the Atlantic Ocean. Part of the same civilisation is also believed to be in the region of southern Spain, which is maybe what drew me here as well. But my story continues with a surprising outcome.

“No Diet Detox” by Diana Dudas m.f.h.t. m.i.c.h.t. Christmas over, the average woman has exhausted all energy reserves and has spent the last two months, living a life of holiday mania. Full steam ahead, times are now spent, preparing gourmet cuisine, making serious gift item decisions, and having to look fantastic for all holiday celebrations. It is no wonder that once the actual holiday has arrived, all hair is let down. It’s time to put on the expanding elasticised waist sweats and gorge on the season’s delights. Cookies, chocolates, desserts, eggnog, wine and cocktails just to mention a few of them. There is no time for the gym or even a touch of pampering. It’s all about everyone else. However, the new year is here, the kids are back at school. Husband back at work, and you are in need of some serious pampering. Over the festive holidays most of us will have gained a few pounds. The media is inundated with ads on how to lose weight. A new diet will be born, fitness centres suddenly have 2 for 1 offers and sales of exercise videos soar. The best way to lose weight however is to do a simple detox and one of the simplest ways to do this is with the use of Detox Foot Patches. Detox Foot Patches These are amazing. They detoxify the body using only natural ingredients from the Far East, and have the ability to help the body achieve its optimum state of health by improving blood circulation, increasing metabolism, activating blood cells, with the added benefit of providing relief for joint pains, enhancing quality of sleep and expelling harmful toxins. They also have a calming effect on the nervous system and help relieve stress and tension.

Natural Ingredients These foot patches contain the highest quality natural ingredients: Wood Vinegar - has properties that have been shown to maintain good blood circulation. Tourmaline - exerts a cleansing and liberating energy upon our entire nervous system with a clearing and stabilising effect. Tourmaline is best known for its ability to emit far-infrared heat. Chitosan - is produced from Chitin which is contained in the Hokkaido crab (red sea king crab). Chitosan products have been used now for over 30 years by water companies to trap toxins, grease, heavy metals and oils. Mugwort Extract - is a herb widely used to help soothe skin. How do they work? According to Chinese medical knowledge, the human body has over 360 acupuncture points, with more than 60 acupuncture points and some 7000 nerve endings found on the soles of the feet alone. As the blood circulates to the soles of our feet the powerful ingredients of the Foot Patches unleash and accelerate the release of toxins through these nerve endings and acupuncture points. Just place them on the bottom of your feet before you go to sleep and leave them on overnight. You will feel re-energised and will have the best nights sleep ever. I am more than happy to answer by email any health care concerns you may have and advise you on holistic treatments and natural medicines that will be beneficial for your well-being. Please feel free to email me at info@alkemiholistics.com

♦The tourist office in Arboleas has

notified by email that their opening hours are now Tuesday to Sunday, 10am until 2pm. The APSA charity fashion show held at La Parrilla in Albox, raised a marvellous 2,500€! As usual the Winter fashion show and auction was a sell-out and everyone had a great evening and spent lots of money on clothes and accessories. The raffle was a huge success with excellent prizes kindly donated by local businesses such as the Rambla Cafe, Rumores Restaurant, Donna’s hairdressers, Simply The Best clothes, Los Rizos grocery, Frillies lingerie and the Sabor Restaurant at Alfoquia. Huge thanks from APSA to Sue and Pam and all the other ladies who worked so hard organising and running the event, and to Frank, Duncan and Alan, entertainers for the evening. The money will help the many dogs in the care of APSA and the successful neutering programme. APSA thank all who went along and remind you that there are lots of good quality clothes in the APSA shops in Albox and Tijola. The Dog House Foundation Charity, would like to thank the Ladies of los Terreros and the Petanque Teams for their kind donation of over 415€. This money was raised by donations from Petanque Players, as well as Bric-aBrac and Table Top sales, a Quiz Night and a Raffle. The Foundation would like to send their heartfelt gratitude and thanks for the continued support received from the residents of San Juan de los Terreros.

♦Anyone interested in helping The

Dog House Foundation is invited at any time to arrange a visit to the centre. They have a meeting on 2nd February at 4pm at Juanjo's Bar, Carretera Nacional, Huercal Overa (next to Mascotas Pet Suppliers). The APSA shop in Calle Ancha in Albox has had such a busy winter that more stock is needed! All the money raised in the shop goes to help abandoned animals in the area and to support the neutering programme. They rely on the generous donations brought to the shop which is run by volunteers. Do you have any clothes, bedding, brica-brac - anything which you no longer want but which we can sell? Maybe you are having a clearout after Christmas - unwanted Christmas presents and decorations you may no longer want can be sold or kept for the correct season. Please do help by bringing even just a small donation of clothing to the shop which is situated up the road from Santander bank, across the bridge in Albox. Ring 663 762 642 if you need directions or other help. Thank you and happy new year from APSA. Pamela’s Line Dance Club stayed fairly low-key in the second half of last year but, for 2011 it is the Club’s intention to continue with the Monday evening classes at The Piano Bar in Turre and have a large number of very regular ‘Social Dances’, mainly on Saturday evenings, but possibly sometimes on Friday evenings, using several venues. As some of these Dances may only be booked one or two weeks in advance, anyone interested in attending should contact Pamela directly on 950 398 076.

APSA, the animal charity in Albox, run a monthly raffle for meals at Amigos Bowling Centre and Syedpur Indian Restaurant, the money raised helps the many animals in the care of the charity. In December Keith Roberts, who runs the raffle for APSA with his wife Jackie, presented Cheryl from GBs, above left, with her prize of a meal at Syedpur. John Stonehouse presented the prize for the meal at Amigos to winner Keith, above right. The December raffle raised 158€ for the animal charity and APSA are grateful to the two businesses for their support. The Syedpur meal winner was Norman and Barry, the meal winner at Amigos bowling centre. Raffle tickets can be purchased at GB Stores, Rumores, Amigos Bowling Centre and the APSA shop as well as from supporters in your area.

IT’S ALL CHANGE AT ALLBITES After 6 years at the helm Liam has finally decided to hang up his apron at La Alfoquía's popular eatery, Allbites, and is heading back to the U.K. to run his own gastro pub (The Bell) in Strood, near Rochester, Kent, with wife Alison. Liam & Alison and children Byron & Brooke moved to Spain 8 years ago. Following a 2 year spell in Barcelona the ambitious couple happened upon "Turtle Bay" a small out of the way, run down fish & chip shop/café, in La Alfoquía. They recognised it as a challenge with plenty of potential for improvement. A change of name and 6 years on Allbites is a thriving business providing a wide variety of meals from traditional fish & chips to curries to Chinese food, American style burgers, kebabs and much, much more. The development of the outside patio meant they could host al fresco dining with live entertainment, parties, charity quizzes etc. Friends and customers alike will know that likeable Byron, now 17 has ambitions of joining the RAF, but Spanish educational qualifications are not recognised in the UK and so in September 2009 Byron returned to the UK to finish his education. Liam said, "Alison and I are very proud of Byron and all that he has achieved, it goes without saying that we have missed him so much. We then started thinking about career opportunities for Brooke, now 15 and quite frankly there's not much on offer." Alison and Brooke moved back to the UK in September of this year where Alison is paving the way for their new venture and Brooke is lined up to attend hairdressing college in the near future. Liam added, "It's quite a relief that Alison & I and the children have secured our immediate futures, but it has been a big wrench moving back to the UK. Allbites is the second longest established English business in the Almanzora Valley, and in our time here we have made so many good friends. I would like to say a big thank you to everyone for their support and friendship." But It’s Not All Bad News. Allbites’ new owners are Liam & Alison's long time friends Nicky & Phil. Locals will know Nicky from La Alfoquía's Latino's where for 7 years she has worked as both bar manageress and in charge of running the kitchen. Nicky & Phil are not newcomers to the food and pub trade. They have been together for 16 years and met whilst Phil was running a pub in Brighton, England. They moved to La Alfoquía with son Travis (now 11) 9 years ago and joined Phil's father who was already in residence. Phil said, "There's a strange sense of irony about all this because 6 years ago I was working in "Turtle Bay" when Liam & Alison came in to look around and enquire about buying the business from the then owners. I was in fact the first person to meet and greet them and here we are today with Nicky & I now buying the business." Nicky added, "When we found out that Allbites was on the market it was too good an opportunity to let pass. In my time at Latino's Juan & Adelina (the owners) have been like a family to me and I agonised over telling them I was moving on. I can't express enough my gratitude to them for their support, advice and friendship." She added, "It will take us a little while to get into the full swing of running our own business and at present we don't plan any major changes. We are so excited about the future and offer a big welcome to everyone." Liam & Alison's friends, neighbours and customers wish them all the best for the future and the best of luck Nicky & Phil in their new venture.

THE DOG HOUSE FOUNDATION CHARITY NIGHT at Bar La Union, La Alfoquía on Saturday February 26th, 8pm with Stage 2 and Dog House Band Tickets 10€ includes Buffet available from Bar La Union and Mo’s Music Bar

A Dog House Success Story MARLEY (aka Gandhi) has been homed in the UK. Julie and Davey Dixon saw him on Facebook and fell in love. Here he is pictured checking out his new passport!

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs entertained an audience of both Spanish and English, children and adults, when they came to Albox in aid of APSA animal charity. There were plenty of jokes, particularly from the hapless huntsmen Haddam and Lostit, lots of booing and hissing from the audience directed at the wicked Queen and some splendid singing and dancing to live music from the large Spanish and English cast. Zorro proved that horses can dance and the ‘aah’ factor was provided by young children as animals and teddies. The costumes were magnificent (thanks to the hard work of Sue Robottom and her band of wardrobe mistresses) Dame Fryup was belle of the ball in the finale and there were many curtain calls for a cast who were clearly enjoying themselves. A good night was had by all. At the time of going to press, Arboleas had yet to experience the show – oh yes it had!!!

GENERAL ENQUIRIES 678 490 217 RIO and ROY These two handsome brothers came to PAWS as young puppies and are still awaiting their Forever Homes. True to their sighthound breeding, they love to run and play. They have shown themselves to be sociable with other dogs. When they first meet you they may be a little reserved but when they get to know you they are friendly and like to keep your company. HOOCH Hooch is a friendly adolescent dog. He enjoys running around and exploring his surroundings and is active and energetic. He has been at PAWS since a little puppy and it is really time he could enjoy the benefits of a good home environment.

APSA has many dogs of all sizes and ages just waiting for good homes. Ziggy and the other APSA dogs can be seen on the website www.apsa.org.es where you can also find out about events and other ways to help the charity or ring 663 762 642.

DANE is in desperate need of a home. He is about 18 months old and very placid. He's living rough with handouts from people in the area.

PUPPY RESCUE in SPAIN

Calle Málaga, Albox, 04800 Caring for abandoned, abused and neglected puppies in the Albox area.

OLI Oli is a good sized dog with presence and is very handsome. Unfortunately, someone tried to mar his good looks by cutting off his ears. What a pity. Despite this cruel act, Oli is people friendly and really enjoys human company. He gets along with most dogs.

BELLA - 1 year old female fully vaccinated, chipped and spayed with Passport for UK. Her owners have returned to UK to live with relatives. Very friendly, loving little dog, loves to go for walks and to play, is used to children and other dogs.

DELFO Nobody knows why this sweet dog could have been abandoned. He is very friendly and adores human company. He gets on well with his kennelmates. Delfo does not seem very happy at the shelter but we know he would blossom in a loving home.

LEYLA & SUZIE - Only days old, Leyla (on the left) was found abandoned in the street along with her sister, Suzie. Both kittens came into our care and have since been fostered by one of our cat volunteers. Leyla is the quiet one of the siblings, Suzie is bold and adventurous, and they enjoy each others company. They share their present foster home with dogs so are used to them. At almost six months of age now, both are vaccinated and spayed.

BENNY - 1 year old male. Found roaming, has had a home at some time, friendly, affectionate, but has had to learn to walk on a lead and to play, is good with other dogs, but would need some more training.

If you can give any of our dogs a good foster or permanent home please ring 667 623 254 or visit www.puppyrescueinspain.org Tel: 626 766 073 thedoghse@hotmail.com

BREEZE & DRAUGHTY - Abandoned by their owner, Breeze is the most loving and easy-going cat, she adores being cuddled and stroked but would be lost without her sister. Draughty is playful and affectionate, small but with a big heart. Both cats are happy playing outside all day. Fully vaccinated, blood tested, passports – everything except a home to call their own.

Valentine's Day Traditions Around the World Valentine's Day traditions vary according to the country or place in the world. Different people and different cultures have different ideas about how to celebrate this event.  Denmark has its own unique Valentine's Day traditions. A gaekkebrev is a joking letter that is sent by men and includes a romantic verse but is unsigned. Instead of a signature, the man will use a number of dots that are supposed to correlate or to the number of letters in the person's name. If the name is guessed, then the individual will later be given an egg on Easter.  Taiwan celebrates or observes this event two times a year: February 14th and July 7th. On this day, roses are exchanged, the colour and amount of roses linked to the intentions of the giver. For example, a single rose means "only love" whereas 108 roses mean "marry me."  In China, Valentine's Day is celebrated not on February 14th but on the 7th of the month. When this day comes around, couples will head to the Temple of Matchmaker to pray. One practice of this country has single women placing needles on the surface of the water when the Vega star is high in the sky.  In England, one custom has women pinning bay leaves to each of the four corners and to then consume eggs with yolks replaced with salt. This was done to ensure that the women would dream about their future husband. Another England custom has women writing down the names of their lovers, attaching them to clay balls that were then placed in water. If any of the pieces of paper surfaced, then this was supposed to be the name of their future spouse.  In Scotland, the event is celebrated with a get together or festival where the unmarried gather. Here, each person will write their name on a slip of paper and then drop it into a hat. The ladies then draw a name and then the men. The females are the ones who pin the name of the person they draw on one of their sleeves or over the heart. The males are expected to pair up with the person who has their name and to give her a gift.

www.advertisermojacar.com ‘London Bill’ managed a few small mullet and palometa from Garrucha rocks before the weather deteriorated. He says he caught nothing worth mentioning or eating and had to buy his fish and chips at the Beachcomber, shame! ‘Captain Brian Cuba’ went out on Friday and took John, Bill, Mick and ‘Seasick Steve’ from the Albox based ‘Syedpur Fishing Club’. They caught some good fish including red snappers, a conger and a forkbeard as well as some of the usuals. Three boats went out last Thursday, Brian’s, ‘Chippy Pete’s’ (now known as ‘Captain Pete Pugwash’ as he’s bought ‘Edmund’ the boat. And ‘Gnome Graham’s’/‘Hissing Sid’s’). Graham and Sid started the day fishing the Garrucha holes with the other two boats and caught a few small fish before heading off towards the river for some triggerfish. Graham lost one good one and that was it. Pete’s company was ‘Radio Ham Kevin’, Barry from Mojacar and his mate Keith, who was here on holiday. Keith caught a couple of three to four foot congers and they all shared a mixture of the usual suspects including some decent scabbard fish. I was on Brian’s boat accompanied by ‘Inflatable Andy’, ‘Mike the Watch’ and ‘Paul the Rope’. We did ok with seven different species landed including pouting, Spanish mackerel, bogues, pandoras, combers, a scabbard fish and a small conger for Andy’s dinner. Andy had hooked a small fish and the conger swallowed it head first until the hook embedded itself in its throat. I put a live bait down on a small hook (attached under the front of the dorsal fin) to light mono with two 10.0 hooks attached to a 200lb steel trace, hanging very close by the fish. This set up keeps the bait alive for as long as required and I find great pleasure in letting the fish go if I don’t get a take. A good shark set up maybe but something nicked the fish without taking the bigger hooks. Next time I will have to attach the live bait directly to a bigger hook attached to the steel trace, lessening the chance of a predator taking it without getting hooked. Pete’s next trip out was with George, Keith and another mate. George and Keith both caught congers and Pete lost two including a monster. They caught plenty of other fish too. Pete and I went out on Saturday and had a good day, a couple of congers and I kept mine to give to a mate to ‘smoke’, we’ll see how ‘Smokey Mal’ from Oria gets on with it. I also had a nice red snapper and two twin banded bream and a moray eel. Pete had a good twin banded too. Other fish landed were, swallow tailed rock perch, pandoras, combers and Spanish mackerel. As is becoming the norm lately Pete lost a monster conger which wouldn’t let go of the bottom, he finished up snapping his 50lb breaking strain rod. That was two rods broken that day because I

smashed a spinning rod, I don’t care, it was worth it. I know I told you last week I was going to find a new way of fishing with a live bait (on a really strong rig and rod) but we didn’t catch a suitable fish. I did however make up a light plastic coated steel rig with a 6.0 hook to fit between my mono trace and the bottom weight and that worked well with small live and dead baits. My conger took that and I lost a couple of others because I was lifting into bites rather than letting the fish sit there swallowing them. I don’t care because although congers are ok I would rather catch some decent bream species right now. A little trick I’ve learned is to reel in initially very slowly off the bottom and this method has picked up congers, meagres and red snappers mainly. Last minute update: I went out trolling with Brian on his boat yesterday and we were joined by ‘Happy Harry’ and ‘Los Gallardos Tony’. We trolled to and around the fish farms at Villaricos with only one take. A rod bender but nothing there and the lure had no teeth marks. Maybe a squid or something else it foul hooked. Probably coincidence but a dolphin Harry and his conger surfaced once a few seconds later, roughly over the spot. When back in front of Garrucha marina we dropped down into 150 feet on a mark between the two 250 foot holes. Harry immediately hooked and landed a decent conger. I had one or two small fish including an unusual swallow tailed rock perch. Very pretty and although I say unusual a few have been caught on Brian’s boat this week. It is a shame they never go back, dead on arrival. A bit like Harry’s conger, it also came up dead because the hook had been swallowed and did some damage. Another conger for Mal to smoke. Sorry I have no coarse news this week, handy as I’ve run out of space and time anyway. If you care about fishing have a look here http://www.fishfight.net/ The next meeting of the Syedpur fishing club based in Albox (sea and coarse) will take place at 4pm at the Syedpur Restaurant, Albox, on Wednesday February 2nd. Checkout Mojacar’s weather and sea conditions here on the Beachcomber’s webcam. www.almeriafreeads.com/webcam For further information on any of the above or to find out about beach, boat or coarse fishing licenses, see John at the Beachcomber Bar Restaurant on Mojacar Playa or tel 950 473 099. In case of difficulty reaching me (probably out fishing) ask staff for my mobile number. See more about the Beachcomber at www.beachcomber-restaurant.com Tight Lines, Beachcomber John.

The Chinese Lunar New Year is the longest chronological record in history, dating from 2600BC, when the Emperor Huang Ti introduced the first cycle of the zodiac. Like the Western calendar, The Chinese Lunar Calendar is a yearly one, with the start of the lunar year being based on the cycles of the moon. Therefore, because of this cyclical dating, the beginning of the year can fall anywhere between late January and the middle of February. This year it falls on February 3rd. A complete cycle takes 60 years and is made up of five cycles of 12 years each. The Chinese Lunar Calendar names each of the twelve years after an animal. Legend has it that the Lord Buddha summoned all the animals to come to him before he departed from earth. Only twelve came to bid him farewell and as a reward he named a year after each one in the order they arrived. The Chinese believe the animal ruling the year in which a person is born has a profound influence on personality, saying, “This is the animal that hides in your heart.” RABBITS are affectionate, co-operative and pleasant, with lots of friends. But they can get too sentimental and seem superficial. Ideal career areas include law, diplomacy or the stage. Famous people born in the Year Of The Rabbit: Germaine Greer, Neil Sedaka, Francis Ford Coppola, Nanette Newman Rabbits and the 5 elements: Metal Rabbit: Years 1951 and 2011 - Metal gives Rabbits more strength, resilience and determination. Metal Rabbits are more intense in their actions, whether they're work-related or romantic. Water Rabbit: Years 1903 and 1963 - Like the currents, Water Rabbits prefer to go with the flow, avoiding conflict at all costs, even in situations that are bothersome. It's easy to take advantage of Water Rabbits. They're very supportive of others. Wood Rabbit: Years 1915 and 1975 - Wood Rabbits occupy their time doing for others; always feeling the need to make others content. This generosity is easy for others to take advantage of and sometimes Water Rabbits don't even realize is happening. Fire Rabbit: Years 1927 and 1987 - Fire adds spark to the Rabbit's personality and all that Fire Rabbits do. Fire compels Rabbits to seek new adventures. Prone to tantrums, Fire Rabbits prefer to avoid conflict. Earth Rabbit: Years 1939 and 1999 - Earth Rabbits are grounded in reality. Their advice can be harsh, but honest. Home life is important to Earth Rabbits as are money and material goods. COMPATIBILITY: The Rabbit is most compatible with the Pig and Dog and incompatible with the Rooster and Rat.
