From the Editor Well, it is now officially summer though given the temperatures of late, it was already here! This year we seem to have gone from one extreme to the other, like somebody flicked the switch. With this in mind the Pet Stop column this month deals with the prevention and treatment of heatstroke for dogs, cats and other pets. Firstly I’d like to thank Julian of Hair Design for once again restoring my new look and also dispel the rumour that he is closing, selling or retiring. ‘Hair Scene’ however, is for sale and perhaps this has led to the confusion, or rather I hope this is the case. There seems to be an awful lot of speculating and assuming going on at the moment which is not very pleasant for the person on the receiving end. Now I’ve got that off my chest, the big news this month is The Advertiser’s facebook page is now up and running thanks to Sarah of Emerald Isle. Thanks also to Janet for the maintenance. advertised events are posted daily and the plan is to update any details as and when they occur, for example, if you have any additional events to advertise or need to amend the details of those in your adverts already, then they can be up-dated on the facebook page. There will also be links to Photographer Ian’s albums. Finally it has been brought to my attention that some readers were asking Petter when the last issue would be distributed. Please note: Petter no longer has any practical involvement with The Advertiser. There have been times when he has submitted photos or snippets of information which is why you may have seen his name mentioned, but that is all. Until next month, keep cool Tracey

♣The Spanish government have
decided to restore the speed limit on motorways and dual carriageways to 120kpm from July 1st, following a heated debate in parliament. Deputy Prime Minister Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba said that the temporary reduction had saved 450 million euros, but that there is a cost of 230,000 euros to replace the speed limit signs on the roads, which still results in a huge saving for the entire country. Now, as the price of oil is falling, it seems appropriate to increase the speed limit back to 120kph, increasing by the 10kph that was introduced in March. The move to return the speed limit has been met with some opposition, as the move not only saved money for every driver in the country, but there was a huge decrease in the number of speeding penalties issued and a considerable saving on carbon emissions which benefitted the environment, as well as a significant reduction in road traffic incidents, injuries and deaths. Between the months of January and May, more than 19 million foreign tourists visited Spain, representing a 7.3% increase on the same period last year, according to figures published by the Spanish Inbound Tourism Survey (Spanish acronym FRONTUR), prepared by the Tourism Studies Institute of the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade. And in the first four months of 2011, the Spanish export of goods amounts to 70,081.1 million euros, 22.2% higher than in the same period of 2010. As regards imports, a year-on-year increase has been recorded of 16.2%, to 86,813.3 million euros. Connexions in Turre now have in stock “the right size cabin bag.com.” These cabin bags are the correct size for all the major airlines. They come in a selection of colours, are light to handle and priced at 39.99€. In case you didn’t know, Connexions are the local agent for Easypost, a quick and safe way of sending your mail to the UK and around the world. Collections are Monday to Friday. A grand “Spain’s Got Talent” charity fundraiser in aid of Help the Hero’s was held at the home of Anne and Dennis Blandford, near Lorca at the end of May. The event, planned with precision over the last 12 months, sold its 200 tickets in less than a week and the waiting list for cancellations grew steadily. Ann and Dennis work extremely hard for different charities and as soon as one event finishes the planning for the next begins. Mojácar was represented by our very own, Rod Bridges, Geoff Cook, Norman Hatfield, Tracey and Paul Ingham and young Alistair. Rod and Geoff, last year’s Stavros and Flatly, were joined by Norman and together they formed their spoof version of The Three Degrees (above). Rod re-enacted his version of The Wedding Singer (right) with Norman and Tracey. Geoff, Tracey and Paul gave a wonderful comedy version of "Dirty Dancing" and Alistair took the title of Spain's Got Talent dancing his way through “Thriller” and, to his delight, walking away with a huge trophy. Ann and Dennis prearranged a representative from the Help The Hero’s Organisation to travel from Gibraltar for the evening’s fund raiser and a cheque for over 3,700€ was presented to him by Ann Wheeler, who herself has suffered the loss of her beloved grandson William, who died in Afghanistan, aged only 18 years old. A poignant moment which brought it home to us all just how our service men and women put their lives at risk for their country. The evening finished with jubilant flag waving and singing and the finale was spectacular with a Scottish piper bringing the evening to a close. Ann and Dennis, well done once again! PAGE 6

WELL PERSON HEALTH CHECKS … As you get older, you're more likely to develop conditions that are rare in younger people. Because of this, you should be willing to undergo some health tests. The earlier conditions can be detected, the greater the chance that they can be dealt with effectively. A well person check-up includes: • Measure your height and weight. • Questions about your general health. Your general health will be assessed to check for any health conditions that can be treated. For example, high blood pressure is a common condition that often has no symptoms but once detected can be treated. • You’ll be asked about your current health and lifestyle, for example: your diet, how much alcohol you drink, how much exercise you do and whether you smoke. As well as your own medical history, you’ll be asked about your parents’ health and other family members. This can help to identify health risks that may affect you. You’ll be given advice and guidance about your lifestyle to reduce your risk of developing health conditions such as diabetes, stroke or coronary heart disease. You can also get help and information about male health issues such as prostate conditions. • Asking you to provide a sample of urine to check for diabetes and kidney disease. • Testing your blood pressure. The British Hypertension Society advises that all adults have a blood pressure check every year. High blood pressure can put you at raised risk of coronary heart disease and stroke. If your blood pressure is found to be high, you will be advised on diet and lifestyle changes, as well as medication, that will help to lower it. • Test your cholesterol. Cholesterol is a body fat, or lipid, found in the blood. It plays a vital part in normal body function but if the levels of cholesterol are too high then you're at risk from heart disease. This is because fatty deposits build up and clog your arteries. To check if your cholesterol levels are healthy, cholesterol charity Heart UK recommends that all adults over 40 are tested. This is particularly important if you have a family history of cholesterol problems or heart disease, you have high blood pressure or you are obese. It is a pinprick test, so you don’t even feel it and the result of the check tells you about your risk of stroke, diabetes, kidney disease and heart disease. Some people don’t go to the doctor for regular health checks, because they’re afraid of what they might find out. But what you need to understand is that prevention is better than cure. And part of prevention is taking responsibility for your own health. If you feel pain or unwell you should get yourself checked out, because if you don’t it could be fatal. A Health Check only takes around 20 minutes. That’s no time at all, but it could add years to your life. That’s important, so you can continue to live your life to the full.

elcome to the good side of the solstice everyone. Summer is upon us, as are the school holidays. So in this issue your Navigator is going to save your sanity, with the help of some Rice Krispies and while we’re at it we should take a good long hard look at ourselves. After that, We are going to nip down to the shop for a bargain. There is always an “up” side to every event in life. With school holidays it’s not having to do the school run every morning and then getting to spend that elusive quality time with your sproggs. But what about after the first couple of days? Money is on holiday too, you see. It has taken a year out, possibly two, and finding cheap activities for the family can be an up-hill struggle after a very short while. deal with this dilemma at www.ricekrispies.com This is a commercial website in its essence but it has some redeeming features. One being some extremely simple recipes that are designed for kids to “knock-up”. I do so love playing “Big cook, Little cook”. Parental guidance is advisable on this mission, especially once the oven gets involved but it’s a good way to fill a large part of a day and it is productive in the sense that you are making part of your dinner at the same time. I am not suggesting here that breakfast cereals are real food but on the positive side the skills learned here can be easily transposed to healthier stuffs as and when the kids are bored with Krispy meals. Its definitely worth a look and I know the littluns will like it even if grumpy old parents don’t. Don’t forget to teach them well, in the all important art of washing up afterwards. It’s all part of “The Deal”. Also “The Deal” is a very important part of the deal. Forget this at your peril. fairly good example. It is a Disney related site and has some “cute” “Beach-side” activities within its walls. It is an American website so the spelling is atrocious and it uses insipid terms such as “cute” and “beach-side” a lot. This website also wastes rather a lot of space and time on something called “The Fourth Of July” but this is easy to avoid with a little care. Just google around a bit. You are sure to find something appropriate. Take care though, many of the available sites have hidden agendas, such as religion, politics and advertising but they can be easily side stepped with a little reconnaissance work. Now for something utterly different. I am not inclined to take too hard a look at myself these days, now that I’m close to forty. If I were to take such a look I would have traditionally used a mirror. Not anymore. www.thatsmyface.com has changed all that. Now, if you want to look at yourself, you simply upload a photo and for a modest fee you can have your face (or anyone’s) molded into 3D and installed on a wide variety of action figures for you to introspect at your pleasure. And not only action figures but super heroes and dolls as well. It is one of those sites where there really is something for everyone. The cost doesn’t seem too extravagant and their product is a gift anyone would cherish forever. I wish I had discovered it before Father’s day. You can insert Pop’s head onto a soldier, Superman, Batman, surfing dudes and many more. They make 12 inch figurines for about 100€ and all you have to do, apart from pay, is upload a decent photo. Another feature is 3D masks of anyone whose photo you care to upload. It

struck me as a good idea for Stag and Hen nights where everyone could go as the groom/bride to be. These cost around 25€ and are extremely life-like. There is a free application on the site where you can simply upload a photo of someone just to see the 3D effect but to be honest you might just as well revert to the old fashioned mirror technique of olde. It is fun though and as I said the perfect gift site. Now then, off to the shop. Those of you on facebook will be glad to know that Supersavers in Turre are about to launch on Facey. When you go into Supersavers just let Don or Neeny-weeny know that you are online and you can then receive updates on all the latest bargains on offer. At these difficult times knowing where to save money is going to make the difference between a good summer and a dull one so don’t forget to join the Supersavers gang. Right! That’s all you’re getting this month. I’m off to the beach bars for a little R and R. Friday 24th June saw the official launch of the ‘Ruta de Tapas por Mojácar II’, hosted by Chiringuito Hola-Ola, with some 150 people in attendance to sample a selection of what will be on offer during the three week trail. This year the trail extends to 23 participating cafe/bars and restaurants and runs until 17th July. All you need do is visit at least 10 ‘ruta’ establishments, sample their specified tapas, and get your passport stamped. You can stop at any time. Once you have finished your tour, then add your name, email and telephone number to the passport and hand your completed passport in at any of the participating establishments. You will then be entered into a prize draw where a range of prizes have been donated by the sponsors including two nights at a local Mojácar hotel. If the opening party is anything to go by then this year’s ruta will be a huge success as all the tapas on show rapidly disappeared, and were all given a thumbs-up approval. Passports are available from the participating establishments and the Mojácar Tourist office and your votes are requested for BEST TAPAS HABITUAL, TAPAS ESPECIAL and WAITER/WAITRESS. The participating establishments are;

My Spiritual Path
REIK I by the beauty spot
Thought to have begun in Tibet thousands of years ago, the practise of Reiki was rediscovered by Dr Mikao Usui, a Japanese educator, in the mid-1800s. It was then introduced to the western world during the 1970s. Recipients of a Reiki treatment can heal themselves by drawing the “universal life energy” from the practitioner’s “laying on of hands”. Reiki can be used to alleviate stress, enhance relaxation, and heal the body from illness, injury or even from the side effects of drug therapies. Reiki is a technique mostly used in the western world for stress reduction and relaxation which also promotes healing. It is administered by a trained Reiki practitioner who, by “laying on of hands”, is able to tap into an unseen “life force energy”, which when it is low means we are more likely to get sick or feel stress. The Reiki practitioner then channels this energy to help your body reach a higher level of “life force energy” meaning we are more capable of being happy and healthy. Many people say a treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit, creating beneficial effects which include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and well being.
The Next Chapter by Diana Dudás m.f.h.t. m.i.c.h.t.
I have now entered the next chapter of my spiritual path. It was whilst on a bus trip to Malaga that the bus stopped for a short respite in the province of Granada and I instantly felt the need to return there as soon as I could. And so it was March last year that I did so. Little did I know that the short weekend break would turn my world upside down. On arrival we jumped into a taxi that would take us to our hotel. Oh my word, it was gorgeous, the taxi dropped us off just in front of the reception area. I was so stunned by the beauty of this picturesque bay, that I immediately started to cry. I walked into reception, but it was so embarrassing, I couldn’t stop crying, what is wrong with me I thought, but decided that it was because I was overtired and happy to be on my holidays, little did I know of the story that was about to unfold. The following day we decided to visit the adjoining village. As it was so small we were a little unsure how we were going to fill our day. However we saw a sign that talked of a local church and went to have a look. It was a beautiful old church a little mediaeval in its architecture and there was a small plaza in front where you could sit in the shade and contemplate. We sat there for a few minutes enjoying its tranquillity when we noticed a photo of a lady and an epitaph. She was obviously a lady well-loved as there were many plants and numerous candles flickered in front of her picture. I was suddenly overwhelmed with a feeling of love and joy and once again the waterworks commenced. Before I had time to compose myself and read the inscription on the epitaph my husband whisked me away to the beach so as not to be an embarrassment. We had a lovely day and as the weather was so beautiful we decided to return again the next day and sun ourselves on the beach. As we approached the bay I suddenly had a flash back of a couple of readings that I received the year previous. A couple of mediums had mentioned to me that there was a strong energy around me and that it was someone who had passed on called Maria. I had no idea who it was but the recollection of this caused me to ask my husband if he could remember the name of the lady in the photo at the church. He said yes, her name was Maria. I got quite emotional again and decided to tell him about the readings. I hadn’t told him before as he had always been sceptical about such things. He suggested that we go back to the church and have another look. This time we took our time and read the inscription. I knew in my PAGE 16
heart that this lady must have done something quite remarkable and special for the village, but wasn’t sure what and as we were returning home the next day there was little I could do to find out. My fiftieth birthday was coming up and all I wanted to do was to take a weekend off work and to go back and find out more about this lady Maria. However just before we did that I decided to have my annual reading and to see if the same Maria that had been around me before was to reveal her self again and to find out if it was in fact the same Maria. The medium laid out the cards and the first thing that she said was, “Maria is here and she is telling me that she wants you to write her biography.” Tears of joy fell and I managed to compose myself long enough to ask, “Why me?” She says that you will be able to relate to her as you have similar personalities, she also knows that you will write the story how it should be told. She then went on to tell me that she knows it won’t be easy, but that there would be a man that would help me as the family had lots of stories about the things that she did. I have met that man, who told me that the whole family was anxious that Maria’s story be told and had been waiting for the right person. My husband and I told him how I came to find Maria and I have now been embraced by the whole family giving me permission to write her story. She indeed was a special lady and I am so proud to be writing her story. And it is for this reason that for the moment the story of my spiritual path will be on hold. I have found my place in the world and I am at peace. My wish for all of you is that you find the same.

Natural alternatives to deoderants I received an email last week from a lady asking if deodorants caused cancer. There have been many studies on this and nothing says that they do. However it has been over ten years since I last used an over the counter deodorant. It was whilst living in the States that a friend of mine introduced me to crystal deodorants. I loved the fact that no strong aroma was apparent, it was also comforting to know that there was no chance of white shadows appearing on the underarm area of my clothes. My find came at a time when I was showing more interest in my health and well being. I was intent on finding natural alternatives to the chemicals I used on my body. I had wondered whether using chemicals such as deodorants were harmful to my health. The problems Asthmatic reactions and skin irritation are the key health concerns associated with antiperspirants and deodorants. Aerosols, particularly those containing talc, present the greatest risk for asthmatics, but fragrances as well can spark an allergic response in inflamed passageways. In fact, fragrances and preservatives top the list of personal care product ingredients that produce irritation or allergic reactions, but other ingredients also cause problems. Some chemicals such as parabens in deodorants can cause a skin condition known as contact dermatitis. Signs of contact dermatitis include swelling, itching, inflammation, and even blisters. If you've never seen these symptoms, you probably don't need to worry. Avoiding dermatitis-triggering ingredients is a good precaution for people with sensitive skin, even if there are no immediate signs of irritation. Difference between Antiperspirants and Deodorants Antiperspirants contain astringent compounds, usually of aluminium, which close pores and reduce sweat, reducing odour producing bacteria. Deodorants do not reduce wetness, but contain ingredients that fight odour and inhibit the growth of odour-causing bacteria. If you are one of those people who believe that body odour comes from perspiring, you are only partially correct. Body odour is actually a by-product of the perspiration coming into contact with the bacteria on your skin. Eliminate one or the other and you have eliminated body odour.

About crystal deodorants The Crystal deodorants are composed of mineral salts which form a topical layer on the skin, creating an environment impossible for bacteria to thrive. They eliminate the odour-causing bacteria and therefore prevent body odour. How is that different from mainstream deodorants? Most deodorants mask body odour with a perfumed scent, contain alcohol to shrink pores, or aluminium chlorohydrate/aluminium zirconium. These compounds enter the pores and physically block or clog them to reduce the flow of perspiration. In essence, they inhibit the body's natural expulsion of toxins. Additional Benefits Crystal body deodorants are completely topical and hypoallergenic. They are also fragrance-free, non-sticky, and will not stain or otherwise adversely affect your clothing (even the most delicate such as silk). They leave no white flakes or residue on the skin. They are environmentally safe and easy to use. I have since tried other natural deodorants but after many disappointments I am now committed to using only crystal body deodorants. P.S. Crystal deodorants can also be used to deter foot odour. PAGE 17

Caring and campaigning for the serving and ex service community
♦Volunteers are needed for the
birthday of the Charity. It was held at their usual meeting place of La Parrilla and was attended by a total of 71 members and guests. An excellent 3 course meal was provided by Senior Gregorio and his team followed by entertainment from the ever popular JC, who soon had couples, and even singles, up on their feet. Raffle prizes were donated by Simply the Best, Wavelengths and Sophia’s Wellness Centre and also by some of the members. The lucky winners certainly enjoyed them! This raffle raised a massive 196€ towards helping the Branch and Legion as a whole continue in its support of serving and past Service Personnel. This event wouldn’t have been possible without the unstinting support of the organisers, Sandra Evans and Marie Craig, and a band

This event was just one of many organised throughout the year by this Branch and benefits not only members from Albox but also from Arboleas, as well as a large number of guests who are not yet members themselves. Members of the Branch can enjoy numerous benefits, including welfare assistance for currently serving and ex-service personnel and their dependants, discounts on events organised by the Branch (which may equal or even exceed their membership fees), and not least, the knowledge that their fees and support throughout the year will be going to help those who have served their country and now need some support in return. An Evening with Betty Swollocks raised 1020.14 1020.14€ for Puppy Rescue. Thursday 2nd June was a chilly evening but the laughter kept us warm, Jill’s music kept us entertained during the many costume changes by Betty Swollocks. Betty, sang, mimed and told jokes, which gave a refreshing change of entertainment to Albox, a good time was had by all and the evening was a great success. Hugo of the Bar Internacional provided a tasty buffet and music and dancing went on until late. Thanks to all those who supported the event, sold tickets, donated raffle prizes and to Betty Swollocks and Jill for giving up their time. We hope to repeat the event in the autumn. Money raised from ticket sales, raffle and donations on the night has been used for spaying and worming tablets, and the remainder to our Dogs to Holland appeal. Next event The Blues Bros on 21st September at Hostal Rosaleda. Hattie is one of the dogs selected to go to Holland, but her blood test came back Positive so she cannot go as she has Leishmaniasis. She is a lovely dog currently in a short term foster home where she has had her initial treatment and now is just on tablets. Friendly, loyal, young female just 3 years old, loves to go for walks and is quite good on the lead, she gets on well with other dogs. Hattie just wants to be loved and be with you. Hattie needs a permanent or long term foster home, she is spayed and her treatment only costs around 1 euro a week, which may not be long term and would be paid by us. Leish is not catching so there is no risk to other pets, it’s just her bad luck that the fly chose her. Please if you can help Hattie, email info@puppyrescueinspain.org or phone Diane on 664 768 958. Hattie has so much love and companionship to give, and deserves to be in a loving home preferably with at least one other dog.

Exposure to heat can kill your pets very quickly, be they dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, tortoises/turtles or fish. The humidity level plus the air temperature can make it difficult or even impossible for mammals to reduce their own temperatures. HEATSTROKE/HYPERTHERMIA - occurs when the normal body temperature of approximately 101deg F rises to 105deg F and above. At 106deg F plus, the internal organs will start to breakdown, over 106deg F you have only minutes to save his life. Quick cooling must be started but even if death does not occur, there may be irreversible internal damage, or damage which will need lifelong treatment. SYMPTOMS OF HEATSTROKE - rapid/excessive panting, bright red tongue, red or pale gums, thick/sticky saliva, swelling of the throat, depression, weakness, dizziness/ disorientation, vomiting - sometimes with blood, diarrhoea, shock, coma, any behaviour not normal for your pet whilst doing normal things. CAUSES OF HEATSTROKE - NEVER leave pets - in a car even for a minute, even with the windows open (the inside of a parked car can easily reach 140 degrees), confined to a concrete/asphalt run, kennel or crate without shade and water. Wearing a muzzle or even being muzzled at the grooming parlour is dangerous as is excessive activity on hot days or being left or living in hot rooms in the house. AVOID heatstroke by exercising early mornings and/or later in the evening, keep pet in a well ventilated or air-conditioned room. Outside dogs must have shady areas to lie, cold water to drink and spray with water periodically, provide a paddling pool to cool down in if he likes water. Dogs do not sweat through their skins, they reduce their body temperatures by panting, and sweating through the foot pads and noses. PETS AT GREATEST RISK - puppies and kittens up to 6 months, older pets - large breeds over 7 years, smaller breeds over 14 years, cats over 12 years. Pets who over exert during play. Short nosed breeds, they have narrow respiratory systems that are easily overwhelmed in hot and humid conditions such as Bulldogs, Pekingese, Pugs, Boston terriers, Shar Pei, Cavalier and King Charles spaniels. etc. Double coated breeds such as Chow Chows and those bred for cold climates - Malamutes, Huskies, Newfoundlands. Pets that already have health problems such as heart conditions, poor circulation, dehydration, obesity, breathing problems, those on certain medications. TREATMENT - take your pets temperature if you have a thermometer handy, by placing it in the pet’s rectum, the reading will show how life threatening the situation is. Keep checking the temperature and stop cooling when it reads 103deg F. There are various ways to reduce the temperature but your location will determine which method you choose. Move the pet out of direct sun, offer water to drink but limit the amount he drinks, never put water in the mouth, it may be inhaled into the lungs. Attempt to reduce the body temperature with cool/tepid water either by immersion in a bath, gentle spraying from a garden hose or applying cool wet towels/ cloths to the body and especially to the foot pads and around the head - NEVER LEAVE WET TOWELS ON THE PET AND NEVER USE COLD WATER, both prevent the pet from cooling himself. Move the pet to a room with air-conditioning or stand him in front of a fan, or use an air-conditioned car. Whilst trying to cool your pet down, telephone your vet, explain the situation and carry out any additional treatment they suggest before taking him to the clinic. Even if your pet appears to be ok after your treatment he still needs a thorough check-up as internal damage may have taken place. PLEASE NOTE - extreme cold can cause the blood vessels to constrict preventing the body’s core from cooling and actually causing the internal temperature to rise further, in addition over cooling can cause hypothermia, introducing a host of new problems. Much the same treatment can be applied to cats suffering from overheating. Guinea pigs, rabbits and tortoises, etc. living in hutches or outside runs require cooler, shadier spots too. NOTE - the above is for advice only and is not intended to replace the expert diagnosis and specialist treatment of your veterinarian whose advice is always the best.

GIG IN THE PARQUE II
CALL IN FOR A BIT OF CRAIC WITH PAUL AND SEAN EMAIL: carasbar@gmail.com TEL: 634 308 506
Friday 15 July, starting at 8pm. This year there will be a small entrance fee of only 5€ for able-bodied adults over seventeen. All net proceeds go to the participating charities. Tickets will be on sale from Saturday 2 July from Vera Tourist Office, the Convento de la Victoria, Vera and from various outlets in your pueblo. Look for the posters! AMONG THIS YEAR’S PERFORMERS ARE: ‘Aire del Sur’ (Flamenco dance troupe); ‘Los Gringos’, (the newish rock band that everyone is talking about); ‘Menta y Canela’ a Spanish/Cuban duo who perform a wide range of Spanish language popular music. Tom Lee has an exciting six piece band 'VENZAL' to back him and guest singer, Emily Lee, Tom’s internationally acclaimed singer daughter. Another big band performing will be the newly enlarged Jam Factory led by Denis Hauke. With an eclectic mix of jazz, rock and Caribbean they’ll have you all dancing. The GIG will be their first public appearance. Andy and Nadine Highfield will be on the bill again this year offering a mix of American Country and Bluegrass. Andy is one of the finest flat-picking guitar players you’ll ever hear. ‘Funky’ Pete Fleming is bringing his Almeria based group, ‘SPECTRUM’ to give a whacky Caribbean sound to the programme. And by popular request, the enigmatic Lawrence Burton will be mesmerising the audience again with his recorders, whistles, flute, drums and chants. The Julie Bruce Dance Academy will be springing a few surprises as will piper, David Weir. With one or two acts and soloists still to confirm we already have twelve acts playing music for every taste. What a night it’s going to be. TRANSPORT: Costa Almeria Tours are offering a bus service from and to the outlying pueblos. Give them a call on: 646 760 389. There’s a regular bus service to Vera from Mojacar, Garrucha, Puerto Rey and Vera Playa. The BÚHOBUS (mini train) service will be extended to include the Recinto Ferial for the GIG. Final buses from Vera run at midnight, 01.00 and 03.00 going to Vera Playa, Puerto Rey, Pueblo Laguna, Garrucha and Mojacar Playa. If you’re driving there will be ample parking above the riverside parque and just 100 metres from the GIG. There is a chiringuito in the parque selling drinks and cooked tapas. There will also be a ‘food court’, serving baked potatoes, churros and similar fiesta food. This year as well as supporting all participating charities from Vera and the surrounding pueblos we’re also inviting clubs, associations and other social groups to rent a site, for a modest fee, to raise awareness of their activities and recruit members. Email Harvey at: solarcity@avired.com or phone: 678 682 574. Vera Council will take full responsibility for the event. They will collect all entrance money and fees and distribute the proceeds between the participating charities.

KENNETH ARCHIBALD THOMPSON
POSTCARD FROM BLIGHTY by Phil Naylor ”This month’s image is not strictly “from” Blighty ... We were fortunate enough to be on our holidays in early June & I couldn’t resist the opportunity to show you all the Grand-daddy of all tortoises! Certainly related to the smaller tortoises found in the © Phil Naylor campo around Almeria, this “old boy” is an Aldabra giant tortoise (Aldabrachelys gigantea), from the islands of the Aldabra Atoll in the Seychelles, and a bit of a celebrity! Allow me to introduce “Esmeralda” who is officially the world’s heaviest tortoise (the lady is Sue, my wife)! Some say the oldest too but no-one really knows when he, yes he’s a he, was born. There is a certificate in the reception area of Bird Island Lodge, Seychelles (where he lives) giving his year of birth as 1771 … but how would anyone know?! Be that as it may, he’s a big old boy and there’s something quite humbling to be in the presence of an ancient living creature of a race virtually unchanged for 180 million years!!”

22nd February 1923 – 15TH April 2011 Written by his son Dad, namely Kenneth Archibald Thompson, was born in February 1923 in Birkenhead, Cheshire, the youngest and smallest of 5 brothers. His father was a Pantry man on the ocean-going liners which sailed between Liverpool and the USA. Money was in short supply and his mother used to take in washing and knit gloves for 2d per pair, incredibly, to supplement the family income. He was, however, a bright lad and passed the scholarship to Birkenhead Institute, a good school, which he joined in 1934, aged 11. He was a high achiever, gaining matriculation passes in 8 subjects, 5 with credit. At 16 he joined the RAF Cadet Force - it was then August 1939. Looking through his papers I found a pass giving the 18 year old permission to smoke, but only off base. In 1942 he was accepted for pilot training and 1943 found him in Saskatchewan, Canada, flying Ansons, Harvards and Tigermoths. At this time his nickname was Rodeo Thompson. This stemmed from an incident when his Tigermoth ran out of fuel and he had to land in a field full of horses. He walked to the farm to telephone the base to bring more fuel and when he returned to the field the horses were eating the plane. They apparently found the dope painted on the canvas wings irresistible. When he was posted to India, he flew a motley collection of planes and was awarded the Air Force Cross for conspicuous gallantry - landing a plane whilst badly injured. He once told me that he was shown a map but was not allowed to keep it, whilst flying berween isolated land strips. Flying in India in those days really was on a wing and a prayer. After the war he returned to Birkenhead, married, took me on and had a daughter, Michelle. At this time he was working as an insurance salesman, but decided to embark on a new career in law. He moved to London, lived in digs, studied at London University and Lincolns Inn Fields, was called to the Bar and became a qualified barrister in 1954. Quite an achievement for a working class boy. Using his newly acquired qualifications he joined the Civil Service (the Inland Revenue as I recall). He also joined the Masons, which became an important part of his life for a long period. My recollections of him at this time:Trilby hats (very Indiana Jones) ... A waxed moustache (very Biggles) ... Never let him get near the bathroom before you - he would be in there for hours ... Riding a Vespa down Western Avenue to work - a high-risk occupation - he came off many times. In 1968 he transferred to the Court Service where his law qualifications could be put to better use. It was about this time that he met Robbie and they married in October 1971 (incredibly nearly 40 years ago), extending his family and providing for further adventures (kindred spirits, I think). They moved to Harrow and a period of mid-life holidays and fun ensued. He finally retired some 26 years ago as Senior Clerk to the Court. Dad and Robbie moved to Neston on the Wirral - Parkgate - the posh part, then on to Pentre Halkin, North Wales, halfway up a very cold mountain. Twenty one years ago they moved to sunny Spain and built a house in Enix, finally moving to Mojacar and Turre. My personal reflections:When I was young he rarely lost his temper with me depite my constant provocation. He was always kind and supportive. He had a long, interesting and worthwhile life, but I will miss him, as shall we all.

BRITT - is an active adolescent, playful and sociable. She is attention seeking and tries to engage you for play and companionship. She can be a little mouthy when she wants to get your attention and for this it is not recommended she go to young children. She can be dominant at times with weaker dogs as well. FLORENCE - What a sweet and good natured dog is our “Flo”. In fact, she is such a gentle animal that she is a submissive “smiler”, meaning she gives the appearance of showing a canine smile with her teeth when approached. Florence really likes human contact though she may be a little unsure at first due to her submissive nature, but once she knows you mean her no harm, she likes to remain close to you. She is easy to handle and causes no trouble at all with the other dogs in her living and play groups. VEGAN & PAPI These two gentle brothers were dumped in a garden when 2 months old – the owner has cared for them and now, at 8 months, it is time they found a good family home together, because they love each other so much and have so much love to give, they would make wonderful companions. Both very sweet and friendly, they have been vaccinated, castrated and microchipped and are both house-trained. If you would like any further information on Vegan and Papi, please contact Diane on 950 617 643 or Manuela 659 884 479.

PAWS is now beefing up its efforts to find new homes for Spanish dogs abroad. The animal rescue charity, which survived a financial crisis earlier this year, is back on its feet again but re-organising the way it works. Three Rescue organisations in Holland have all agreed to take a variety of PAWS dogs, and since March 58 animals have already departed for new homes in the Netherlands. PAWS are also working with three different organisations in Germany. And the established relationship with Ibizan Hound Rescue in the north of England sees a continuing flow of Spanish hunting dogs going to new homes there. PAWS has now partially relaxed its ban on taking in new animals, although the shelter is nearly full again, and there is a never-ending queue of dogs needing to come in. As we go to press the result of the Mojacar Council election is still not decided – but PAWS has firm commitments from the three parties who secured the most votes to provide the charity with continuing support.

HA This is a story, which is perfectly logical to all males: HA A wife asks her husband, "Could you please go shopping for me and buy one carton of milk, and if they have eggs, get 6." A short time later the husband comes back with 6 cartons of milk. The wife asks him, "Why did you buy 6 cartons of milk?" He replied, "They had eggs." (I'm sure you're going back to read it again!)

‘London Bill’ fished Macenas rocks and had a few small sea bass using a small silver spoon. He says his Spanish mates are still catching some good fish from marks in Villaricos. I heard from a Villaricos angler an 8lb Palomete was caught spinning at the river mouth south of Villaricos. ‘Pugwash Pete’ tried to get out one day but as usual, at the moment, he was soon beaten back into the marina by strong winds. (Got to get up earlier boys) ‘Capitano Brian Cuba’ and his partner ‘Admiral Phil’ had a really good day out with well over 50 fish being caught. One of the guys got into a VERY large 'something', it fought like mad and really bent a 30lb rod then it took the hook and trace, sad it was interesting. (My money’s on a conger) ‘Farmer Rory’, ‘Grandad Alan’ and ‘Grandson Daniel’ caught pouting, pandoras and combers, hake, bogues and a nice red snapper. ‘40 watts’, ‘Little Ken’ and ‘Queeg’ (I think his nickname is spelt!) of the ‘Grumpy Old Men of Los
Gallardos’ fished a lake north of Lake Negratin near Baza. They caught a lot of fish just below the Sierras and had carp to 4lbs. ‘Baza Barry’ continues to fish Lake Negratin and says as the water warms he is catching more and bigger fish, this week he caught carp to 6lbs. The Rods and Reels venue again, for this week’s match was the Embalse de Argos at Calasparra. The water level is still very high, and could still be rising, not allowing us to use all the old pegs. The fishing again, as last week, was poor in terms of the amount of anglers catching decent weights. Still, at this time of the year, the pegs that are producing are the deep water pegs at the far end, close to the point. Also the water is very clear with no algae colouring the water. The weather had vastly improved with the sun out most of the day. 1st Ian (Irish Wizard) Dalzell fishing the pole using tares with 52lbs. 2nd Lenny (Ex Cultural Attaché) Bolton fishing the pole using paste with 51.5lbs. 3rd Mick (The Arsenal) Hill fishing the pole using paste with 49.5lbs. This week’s Abbey Angling match was fished on the River Segura. The water was still a grey clay colour and was pushing through very fast with all types of debris, reeds, bottles etc. I am not sure where all the extra water is coming from at present, it is a possibility they are running excess water off the reservoirs to get the levels

down before the coming winter’s rain as at present all the reservoirs are brim full. Fishing was again patchy with the top three anglers as follows: 1st Stan (The Man) Roberts with 25.5lbs on the pole, pellet and maggot. 2nd Lenny (Ex Cultural Attaché) Bolton with 23lbs on the pole and maggot. 3rd Mike (The Arsenal) Hill with 18.5lbs on pole, feeder and corn, Mike at the moment has found his form and is making the best of it. All details are available from the Match Secretary Terry Screen on 965 328 368. Anglers Together was formed to introduce and encourage anglers of all abilities to meet up and get together to fish, either sea or freshwater. Firm friendships have been formed during the time the group has been active and information on fishing venues and licenses required are available at the meetings or by regular emailed newsletters. Anyone with an interest in fishing (sea or freshwater) is welcome to come along to a meeting to see what we’re about. The next meeting is on Saturday 9th of July at 12 o’clock at The New Royal Bar and Restaurant, El Alamillo, opposite the sea-front between Isla Plana and the Port.
