ell, given the weather it seems summer is here already albeit not officially and haven’t you all been busy again leaving absolutely no room for my facts about the month of June, ‘on this day’ dates and sea view witterings, though I’m sure you would rather look at photos of the goings on, but I will use this opportunity to tell you that the gemstone for June is the pearl and the flower is the rose. This month’s cover photo is of the winners of the holiday competition sponsored by the Mojácar Business Association, ACEM. Full details of which you will find on page 34. My thanks to Petter for capturing the moment and for all the other moments. Photographer Ian, who has not been well of late but is back home and feeling a bit better each day, now has a facebook profile - bluwater web design - for anyone wanting to view, order or purchase photos of featured shoots. If you are not on facebook then contact me directly and I will pass on your requests. To all you World Cup widows, here’s a cunning plan that my friend Val and
I have come up with – to take advantage of all the 2 for 1 menu offers while the men are busy watching the football. Thanks as always to my contributors, old and new, and to those who have sent in their photos and kept me upto-date on the local happenings. And last but not least … anyone who used to leave classified ads, etc. in The Word, Turre please note Connexions, now situated in the recently refurbished square, have taken on the role of the pick up/drop off point. That’s it then until next month Tracey PS. Don’t forget it’s Father’s Day on 20th June.

♣Following my finally, finally
statement in last month’s sea view – I apologise to anyone who tried to get to Zak’s Plaice in Garrucha from the sea front to find the road wasn’t open after all. Apparently it did open but then it was closed and the road dug up again. Anyway, the good news is, I have been assured that on return from their pre-summer break the promenade specials are going to continue to be on offer. El Naranjo’s Sunday BBQ season kicks off on the 6th of June with live entertainment by The Blues Brothers. On the 13th entertainment will be provided by Mel Jay, Baz on the 20th, Kim on the 27th and ‘Rod Stewart’ on 4th July. Ramo del Limon restaurant is closing for refurbishments from Monday 7th June, re-opening on Tuesday 15th from when their new summer hours will be in operation – Tuesday to Saturday 7pm until 11pm, Thursday and Friday lunchtimes 12.30pm until 3.30pm and closed on Sundays. Please note that the bar will be open as normal throughout. Dames in Turre have two events left before breaking for the summer. June 8th is the annual visit to the Spa at Archena with lunch at Meson mi Cortijo at a cost of 35€, to which guests are welcome and the AGM on Monday June 14th which will be followed by lunch at the Kimrick. Meetings will re-commence on Monday September 27th. For any further information you can contact Lesley on 950 478 633 or e-mail lesleyiom@yahoo.co.uk. Bar La Montana, Bedar are having a 60s Flower Power theme night on Saturday 12th June at 7pm. Tickets are 10 euros per person which includes a barbecue and music by Arriba Arriba. There will also be a prize for the best outfit. Siobhan says, “Be there or be square.” Due to Telefonica’s infinite wisdom El Toro has had to have a new land line telephone number 950 472 989 - and they apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. More changes, planned ones this time, are that they now have Mahou Classica and John Smiths on draught. Every second Tuesday of the month the Beachcomber is hosting a book, CD and DVD sale in aid of

Alstrays/PAWS Cat Charity and every second and fourth Thursday of the month a Marks & Spencer, Wallis, plus other well known labels, clothing sale of discontinued lines. They also have a 60s and 70s night on 16th June for which entertainment will be provided by a solo male singer never seen in Mojácar before. John is offering his famous “Eat All You Like” Meal Deal for 12.50€ and although bookings are advisable says walk-ins will be catered for room permitting. Two of the Irish Rover Irish dancers should have arrived by the time this issue is out to start their nightly entertainment programme. A third member will be joining them on the 10th of June whence they will continue to perform all though the summer.

Alvaron is about to undergo some huge improvements. A separate dining area is on the way, so one may eat in peace, away from the bar and sports fans. The dining area will also be a "no smoking" zone. The air-conditioning is being renewed and much of the open terrace area is going to be covered and enclosed. Also, in time for the coming World Cup football series, the present four TV screens will be supplemented by two huge, 2 metre screens, one inside and one on the newly enclosed terrace. Over and above all this, the present store room is being cleared out and will become a four station cyber cafe. And finally … Iron Art on the El Real Industrial Estate, Antas have not closed, they have only moved and have new stock now arriving weekly. Just in are 4 seater and 6 seater promotional sets at 225/299 euros. Back in stock are the Oyster Beds (see ad on page 27) and new in are Deluxe Rattan Sun Loungers with matching tables. They have lots of wonderful knick-knacks for the home and garden but if you’re looking for something more practical then they also have stock of NEXT towels as well as pillows.

♣And finally, finally … although
already mentioned in my letter, anyone who used to leave classified ads, etc. in The Word, Turre please note Connexions, now situated in the square, have taken on the role of the pick up/drop off point.

For the last two years, Andy has taken a rest from being a DJ. However, he thought it would be nice to keep his hand in, and Paul, of Don Mojito, persuaded him to do a monthly Sunday slot. His first one went down a treat, until almost dawn!
Mo (left) one of Mojácar's entertaining old timers, with her visiting sister, Tina, in Bar Med.
George-Luca at his Christening
On the afternoon of May 2nd Tito’s celebrated the 29th year since it opened with music by Maurice and Clive Sarstedt. Later that evening there was a display of fireworks.
This happy couple at Tito's celebration, David and Christa Vale, have been together for 16 years now, 11 of them married. David has been here in Mojácar for 27 years, and Christa for 36 years, which puts her near the top end of the list of foreign Mojaqueras. On the right of the photo is their good friend Shelagh, who has been coming to Mojácar since the eighties. This time, though, she arrived without Brian "Showman", who I gather is a little poorly. We wish him a speedy recovery. By the way, David's nephew has also been around for quite a while now. He is better known as "Bish" of laundry fame. PAGE

e all know it is sensible to have all kinds of useful programs at one’s disposal on our computers and it does not hurt to have plenty of cool website addresses saved to your “favourites” list ready to take care of all sorts of problems with as little effort as a click of your mouse. Computers are a tool and once you’ve entered into their world you may as well make the most of them. Computers have become the workhorse of most businesses and of many a home nowadays. Sometimes though it’s good to remember that the computer is also a toy and can be used frivolously. With this in mind I must tell you about www.cracked.com. Cracked.com is a sort of fun news site but it leans rather forcibly towards sublime and ridiculous. Not ridiculous in the way that www.dailymash.com is, you may remember I told you about them some months ago. A site where stories are just fabricated for the sake of being hilarious. Cracked, in slight contrast to this, seem to have at least an element of truth in all their articles, it is just that the stories themselves are perhaps a little too bizarre or opinionated to find space in a normal news site or paper. It is definitely not
all silliness though. Some of the articles are about very serious issues. Although www.cracked.com maintain a slant that is kind of political, sort of revolutionary and certainly critical in many cases, it is still difficult to describe exactly what their leanings are. Perhaps random might be an appropriate tag. As for the serious articles that are shown, one concerns an alleged son of Mojácar, Walt Disney. Cracked.com tell in detail, with stills from Walt’s films to prove their point, about Africans, Jamaicans, Chinese and North American Indians being portrayed in a way that you could not describe as anything better than tasteless and in many circumstances I could not describe those depictions as anything less than calculated racism. Go see for yourself, here is the link: http://www.cracked.com/ article_15677_the-9-most-racistdisney-characters.html
One particular story is about a black American actor called James Baskett (shown in picture). He played “Uncle Remus” in the Disney classic “Song of the South”. The movie was premiered in Atlanta in 1946 and Mr Baskett was not allowed to attend the event. I wonder why. There are many more examples of this kind of goings-on in Disney’s films

The hand over took place at half time, during the FA cup final between Chelsea and Portsmouth. Since all the Man U supporters in the Nail were cheering on Portsmouth, this final major event of the UK football season was occasion for much ribaldry, and friendly banter was rife.

but let’s not dwell on that. The world has moved on and so must we. If you feel that folks are just plain bored with you harping on about the same old thing all the while and you feel you need to be more interesting at the ever decreasing number of parties you are invited to then perhaps you should enlighten yourself on cracked.com with such conversational gems as, “What really happens when you are bitten by a radioactive spider?” Or, another fun article I found was entitled, “If mothers took over the Internet” - that gives some interesting perspectives I can tell you. Another good write-up was “The 5 most Famous Musicians that are Thieving Bastards.” I know a few chaps (one actually) that could benefit from reading the piece entitled “Instructional Diagrams

Chris in Reflections at his 50th birthday party, surrounded by an unruly rabble of friends from Newmarket, Newcastle, Liverpool and Australia. He even managed to find one or two from Mojacar! Chris and Karen started the evening by dining in Mojácar village before returning to their bar, Reflections. A disco night was in full swing - which lasted until the wee, small hours grew into a 4! His birthday was actually the following Tuesday, but Karen deemed that Saturday night was better for a knees-up. Some of their friends couldn't make it here, due to a volcano in Iceland, and I'm told there will be another party for them when they eventually arrive.

Now that my family and friends have managed to get back to the U.K. I have time to thank everybody for making my 60th Birthday so special. My celebration started on Wed 7th April when 12 of my girlfriends (Lemonettes and Bar Med Babes) went for lunch at the Sarten in Mojacar Pueblo where Toni and Chris did us proud so thanks to them for a lovely meal. Then on 8th April, my actual birthday, Chris, Katie, Sebas and the girls of Ramo del Limon put on a fabulous buffet and gave me a wonderful cake as a present. You will have seen pictures of this in the last issue of The Advertiser. I had so many cards, 82 in all and presents and a lot of Euros from the Lemonettes and Lads and Bar Med Babes and Boys and I thank you all so much. On Friday 9th we had another party at Bar Med so, thanks again, to the girls for supplying the buffet, to Linda and David for all they did, to Paul for singing some of my favourite songs and a big thank you to Sean Grew for entertaining us all so well plus my boys, Paul and Maggie for singing for me. Last but not least, my family, friends Geraldine and Sam for being here with me and the love of my life, my Paul. Thank you all so much. Love Janet x

Mojácar is now preparing for it’s biggest event of the year, the Moros y Cristianos fiesta, which takes place this year on the 11th, 12th and 13th of June. At the end of May, the full programme of events was launched to the press by the Ayuntamiento and the Al-Mosaquer, the Association of the Moors and Christians of Mojacar. This year’s poster, which was selected in November by a general assembly of the Al-Mosaquer, has been designed by Mojácar artist, Jill Bennett. Jill now helps her husband Patrick run their company Mojacar Long Term Rentals but before living in Spain Jill was a senior lecturer in art and fashion design as well as running her own interior design business and managing the Buckinghamshire Education Service. Jill is printing a limited run of quality t-shirts and cards to purchase featuring the illustrated poster if you are interested. She also accepts commissions for illustrations, murals and interior services. You can contact Jill on 950 478 383 or 600 070 188.

e finished last month’s article by saying we would discuss further some of the advantages and benefits of taking part in regular Tai Ji practice. The obvious place to be able to participate and learn some of the finer arts to Tai Ji is within an instructed class format. Here you will have the opportunity to meet other students and be able to progress your knowledge and development within a group energy. The curriculum we teach from has been handed down via my teacher; he has been using this tried and tested formula for over 25 years. A class runs for 75 minutes and that time is broken down into four specific areas of practice. 1. Firstly we introduce you to some preparatory exercises designed to enable you to relax and promote a flow of energy within your body. We bring a level of awareness and concentration to your exercise. Over time this helps you to develop a set of exercises that you can take with you and practice by yourself in an environment of your choice. At all times the focus is relaxation of your body which can assist in the reduction of stress and tension. 2. Next we teach you a standing post meditation that promotes stillness and harmony between your mind and body. We may ask you to focus on your breathing while learning to stand still and develop a sense of relaxation, awareness and concentration. We are in this form of exercise working with your internal or intrinsic energy often referred to as Qi. 3. We assist you in your gentle movement by introducing you to a walk that promotes relaxation awareness and

concentration. In this style of walking we are assisting you with your sense of balance, and body awareness of time and space. 4. By introducing you to the form we are putting all the three earlier exercises into action. The form consists of a number of flowing movements that enable you to make gentle movements and exercise while promoting relaxation awareness and concentration within your practice. The work we do together within a class has many other benefits which are consistently promoting relaxation in a safe slow and thoughtful manner. Over time, and with regular application, students notice many changes which include a sense of peace and calm within their mind and body. Comments such as, “I have improved my balance”, “better posture”, “greater awareness of my breathing”, “I am feeling more relaxed”, “more confident of my body movements”, are just a few of the regular statements we hear as feedback from students. As we approach summer here in the MOJÁCAR area we are running classes on the beach. We also have an established class that works outside in nature, in a beautiful mature garden locally. If however you prefer the thought of working indoors we do hold regular classes in other locations so please check the advert for updated information. See advert opposite for details of classes.

here are some firsts in life that you never forget. First day at school, first car, first sha…sorry…fag, behind the bike sheds! Those who have learned to fly remember their first solo like it was yesterday. Weeks of frustration in the circuit, approaches ruined by a seemingly invisible hand that reaches from the sky and puts your aircraft somewhere completely different in the final 20 feet. Endless take-offs, landings, and go-rounds. One day feeling like a pilot, followed by another feeling useless, with the coveted license so far out of reach that you consider giving up. October 24th 2003, on final approach to runway 30 at Muchamiel aerodrome, my third approach of the day. “Make this one a full stop landing”, said Ed, my instructor. I could barely conceal my irritation, what was wrong now!! “Echo Mike Echo, finals, runway 30, full stop” I barked down the radio. Braking, I turned onto the apron. “OK, you’re going to fly alone, 3 take-offs and landings please, go around if you’re unhappy for any reason” said Ed. Then he was gone!! I didn’t even have time to collect my jaw from the floor. My lips ceased to function, saying something like, “Echo Mike Echo my hovercraft is full of eels” over the radio. My legs shaked as I taxied, and I was afflicted by instant alzheimers! But as I opened the throttle, high octane adrenaline surged

Through instructors eyes the solo takes on a different perspective!
through me, and at 80 knots, as I eased back on the stick and the ground slipped away, suddenly all the weeks of training had meaning. I had never felt so alive! I looked to the instructor’s seat... empty! I was pilot in command! And I flew so well!! After landing, although Mike Echo was on the ground, I was still flying. The license now brushing my fingertips!! These days, through the eyes of an instructor, the solo takes on a different perspective. I know my student can handle the aircraft, and that he can cope with emergency procedures. He has demonstrated the consistency I require, and responds when under pressure. But I cannot really know how he will react alone. I can only go with what I’ve learned of his psyche. The confident student can become the nervous wreck, in the same way that the timid one suddenly becomes Captain Kirk. I act very casually, pretending that I’m going for a cuppa as I have no doubt that he will perform admirably! But truthfully? Each first solo is a painful baptism of fire for me, I am terrified! But when he lands, wow! I share the joy of a new pilot. He is on the phone ecstatically breaking the news to his loved ones, I am on the phone to mine, equally ecstatic. To really understand ... you have to become one of the 2% that do it!!

are much gentler. You usually only need to exfoliate your face once or twice per week depending on your skin type. Moisturising, morning and evening is a must for the face. If you let your skin dry out, it can cause fine lines and wrinkles, and increase the appearance of aging. It’s a good idea to use a moisturiser with SPF to both moisturise and protect your face against UV rays. When you're ready to show off some skin in the sun, don't forget the sunscreen!! Be sure to choose one with a good SPF protection. It not only protects against sunburn but can reduce chances of getting skin cancer and age spots. You want at least SPF 15 but many opt for SPF 30 and higher. Make sure it is waterproof if you are in and out of the water! To help your skin stay hydrated be sure you're drinking enough water - you should try to drink at least 6-8 glasses of water every day. Yes, it sounds a lot of water but it’s not that much when spread throughout the day, especially in the hot weather. Unfortunately a nice cold beer, glass of wine, coffee or fizzy drink doesn’t have quite the same effect as a tall glass of the clear stuff. However, fruit or herbal teas are very acceptable and very refreshing. Cheers! Here’s to a great summer with kissable skin!

GET INTO YOUR SUMMMER SKIN
So girls...at last summer is finally here, time to dust off your strappy dresses, shorts, bikinis and shades. If the mere mention of the word “bikini” brings you out in a cold sweat and counting down ‘til it’s winter, don’t panic! Let’s look at how you can get your skin into top shape and ready for a bit of flesh baring! The main tools for achieving lovely soft, silky, touchable skin are Exfoliating Scrub and Moisturiser. After the damp, cold and windy winter, there is no better way to transform your dull, dry skin to this lovely new weather, than by sloughing off your dead skin cells to reveal a fresh, glowing skin. The best way to exfoliate your whole body is by using a body scrub in the shower, they are best applied in a circular motion, paying particular attention to extra-dry areas (elbows, knees, shins and feet). If you are on a budget you can make your own very effective body scrub with Sea Salt and Olive Oil. Apply on damp skin in the shower and rinse off. After every shower ensure you massage some moisturiser all over your body, it’s a good idea to get into the habit of moisturising your whole body daily, you will notice a difference. (Even better if you can get someone to do it for you!). If you want to kick-start your summer skin care routine, why not treat yourself to a ‘Deep Cleansing, Nourishing Body Polish Treatment'. This includes skin brushing, exfoliation and massage to moisturise and condition the skin. At the moment there is a free Facial with every Body Treatment. You also need to pay attention to the skin on your face, however don’t use a body scrub on your delicate facial area, you need a specific facial scrub or peel, these

Business Report Vehicle Air-Conditioning KEEPING COOL IN YOUR CAR NEED NOT COST YOU A FORTUNE!
I
t’s that time of year again whenyou need to be thinking about a service on your car’s air-con system. Air-conditioning problems tend to be noticed at the start of summer as the weather hots up. In the climate that we live in, the last thing you need is to switch on your air– con and get blasted with warm air. An air–con service by COOL - AIR can prevent this! Although air–conditioning represents less than 4% of all mechanical failure on a modern car it is the third most expensive to repair after the engine and the gearbox. It is advisable to use your air-con for at least 10 minutes a week and get it serviced every 12 to 18 months. Really it is all about preventative maintenance, if you did not put
oil in your car’s engine you would expect it to run dry and seize up. It is just the same with your air– con. The main component is the compressor and this needs to be kept lubricated with a special kind of oil that mixes with the refrigerant. If this is not done then your compressor WILL seize up. If your air–con is regularly serviced the compressor should last the life of the car. The U.K.’s leading warranty repairer Warranty Direct Ltd have released figures to show how expensive compressors can be. • A new compressor on a Vauxhall Astra would cost 704 pounds for the part and 196 pounds for labour. • A Honda Jazz compressor would cost 621 pounds and 240 pounds to fit.
• A Ford Mondeo compressor would cost 489 pounds and 198 pounds to fit. AND ALL PLUS RE–GAS AND VAT. Replacing the system’s condenser is cheaper but in 40 % of cases it takes longer to fit. On a Peugeot 406 garages will charge 4-6 hours which can add up to 480 pounds to the 290 pound cost of the condenser. Warranty Direct LTD manager Gordon Rose said, “We are thinking of introducing a waiver in our warranty policies that insists that you have your air-con serviced or your warranty will be void if your compressor needs replacing.” He also said, “We
spend tens of thousands of pounds every year replacing compressors that in our opinion would not need replacing had the air-con system been serviced on a yearly basis.” COOL - AIR provide a complete service, including re-gas, diagnostics, repairs and parts all carried out by a fully qualified vehicle air-con engineer. COOL - AIR is a mobile service based in Mojácar and covers all surrounding areas.

www.advertisermojacar.com In the early 1980s a man called Mike Lee, together with his girlfriend Lynda, opened a convenience grocery cum coffee shop at La Parata. It was named using the first part of Lynda's name and the last part of Mike's name, i.e. Lyke's. Over the years it has had many owners and the grocery aspect was gradually dropped whilst the coffee shop eventually became a full blown restaurant, until only the name remained of the original enterprise. However, on the 25th of April, 2010 the Lyke’s saga breathed its last under the present owner, Tim.
A week later the Lyke's pre mises became El Toro steak house, in a well att end with entertainment by Sue ed opening event, and Dennis Moretta.

original beach essentials Open Every Day 10 am - 8 pm INDOLE was started by Sonia in May 2004, so it has a relatively long history in Mojácar, when it used to be situated in the same parade as Esencial and Sitio. Now it is located on “the Best Hotel Indalo strip” - next door to Aladdin’s, roughly mid way between the Rusty Nail and Alberto’s ice cream parlour.
PAGE 18
Tlf: 950 450 107 Indole offers beach essentials plus casual summer clothing and footwear which can be best described as good quality at a medium price. The beach essentials range includes bikinis, swimming trunks and beach footwear by iPANEMA and RIDER for all the family. Bikinis start at 19.95, trunks at 14.95 and flip flops from 12.50. Sonia also offers a selection of sarongs, kaftans, sunhats, bags and beach towels along with a range of jewellery – perfect for gifts. The summer clothing for ladies is in natural fibres such as cotton, linen and silk. Shirts, T-shirts, dresses, skirts and trousers are available in sizes S, M, L and XL and range in price from 20 – 55 euros. Sonia has been faithful to both her suppliers, Fete and TST, since her beginning. Both brands have been maintaining their casual style, simple design and quality standards over the years. This season sees the return of the beautiful
and extremely comfortable braided sandals from La Marine in 30 different styles and colours. So, needless to say, INDOLE really is worth a browse. They are open every day from 10am until 8pm. You can also find them on facebook – Tienda Indole and view some pictures of the main items.

who may need a wheelchair or is someone in your family having temporary problems getting around? The APSA charity shop in Albox has a modern, easily portable wheelchair for hire at reasonable rates. For information please call in at the shop or ring 950 064 150 or 637 923 263. They can help with your mobility and you can help the many animals in their care! In February, Puppy Rescue sent 24 dogs over to Holland for rehoming. The really good news is that already 13 of the 24 have now found loving homes. Six Galgos are also scheduled to leave at the beginning of June to a special Galgo Rescue Centre in Holland. One of the Galgos, Alfie, already has a home waiting for him. Holland have been delighted with the condition of the dogs arriving from Puppy Rescue, so much so that they have agreed to take in more. The dogs have a much better chance of being re-homed in Holland but the only issue is the cost of preparing them to go and the actual transportation to get them over there. Many of the dogs at PR have been in kennels all their lives and have never had a home or anyone to love them. So it's vital that more funds are raised to send as many as possible over to Holland. The last Puppy Rescue 'Gold Appeal' brought in some much needed funding that went towards the costs of the first 24 dogs going to Holland. However, more is now

required to start getting the next lot of dogs ready to go. The costs are around 150 euros per dog. Please support their new appeal by donating any unwanted gold jewellery you may have lying around. Perhaps an odd earring or broken chain. Or maybe you could help with a donation. If so, please put the gold or money in an envelope marked 'Dogs to Holland' and hand it in at their shop on Calle Malaga, at their market stand or Saturday car boot stand at the Bar International. No matter how small your donation, you can help give some of these dogs a much better future. Puppy Rescue has now launched a brand new website which they hope will assist in raising more funds. The new site is at www.puppyrescueinspain.org (the current - .com site will be taken offline shortly) It's that time of year again!! Yes, F.A.C.E. (fund raising in Arboleas caring for everyone) Annual "Family Fun Day" is coming soon!! Sunday 27th June from 12-6pm by the Nave, next to Arboleas swimming pool. As always they need your help and are looking for donations of tombola prizes, brica-brac, books, plants and homemade goods such as jams, marmalade, chutney ... and lots of cakes!! You can drop these off at the following drop off points: Essentials and Sophia's Gym (Arboleas), Choice Entertainment (Huercal Overa), Mo's Bar (La Alfoquía) or Rumores (Albox). Pamela’s Line Dance Club will not be holding any Saturday Night Specials at Latino’s until September. I will give you the dates as soon as they become available. PETTER’S VIEW FROM THE VALLEY Talk about early prepping! I dropped into Allbites on my way up to take part in a Thursday evening Forum on Valle Radio and I discovered Liam making the stuffing for that Sunday's carvery. I hear it's going down rather well. It starts at 2 o'clock every Sunday and booking is very important. Call 666 032 776. The price is 10 euros for the full feast of starter, main course, pud and coffee. If you only want the main course it costs 7 euros and there's even live entertainment. I see that on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, the 3rd, 4th and 5th June, in the Martín García Ramos

It's not as though the area lacks space; eliminating the present mess of islands and lights in the area would yield enough room for a three lane roundabout. I gather that the model car racing people are still searching for a venue for their track. If you do have an empty warehouse, garage or indeed anywhere with a reasonably large amount of space then call 606 198 457 and talk to Dick Cooper. The Dames in Huercal Overa presented Wayne Claridge from M.A.C.S. with their generous donation of 600 euros at their AGM on Wednesday 21st April at the Huercal Overa Tennis Club. The meeting was attended by approximately 60 members - the organisation is growing in numbers. The Dames made the representative Wayne very welcome, and Wayne gave a short speech praising them for their generosity and hard work in the Huercal Overa community, in particular achieving their own charitable status and thanking them for their donation to M.A.C.S. Pictured from left to right are Pam Heydon (Chairperson Dames in H.O.) Tina Bunston (Treasurer, Dames in H.O.) Wayne (from M.A.C.S) Mary Stokoe and Jan Mason (Social Secretaries Dames in H.O.) The 600 euros raised was as a result of a number of raffles, prize draws, etc. over the past 6 months. The Dames in Huercal Overa also raised money for a local school for people with disabilities and an animal welfare charity local to the area.
Have you ever wondered what the law in Spain is regarding animal cruelty and the general rules of keeping a pet? Well we at the Dog House Foundation – Huercal Overa believe that education is one of the main weapons we have to fight the cause of animal mistreatment. The more people can understand the law and its consequences the more, we hope, it will make them start to think about how they and others treat their animals. On our mission to educate people we have put together a general overview of the laws in Spain which apply to general pet owners (livestock/farming issues excluded). All our literature comes from the legislation database Noticias Juridicas. Regarding IDENTIFICATION AND RECORDS - Do you understand the Law when it comes to having the correct identification records for your pet? As a dog owners ourselves we were very surprised when we read the full and necessary papers and procedures required by pet owners. We were aware of the microchipping policy but the Register of Companion Animals? Let us explain it all for you at: http://thedoghouse-huercal-overa.webs.com/informationlegislation.htm
If you are aware of anyone breaking the law by mistreating an animal or you are concerned for an animal’s welfare please contact the authorities or The Dog House on 626 766 073 or email: thedoghse@hotmail.com and we will make sure the appropriate authorities are contacted. The law is on your side and if we work together we can decrease the amount of cruelty cases that occur. PAGE 21

The pitter patter of petty pennings
If you are looking for someone with wide experience, to work in a bar, then keep Mark in mind. He is an experienced barman and bar manager and was, for many years, the manager of the Old Tavern. Would you like to be a member of the "D.O.M.S." They meet on the first Thursday of every month. It's a bit like the Dames in Spain, except that the DOMS are the Dirty Old Men in Spain. Meetings are always "in the usual place, at the usual time, each month". Sometimes, when I'm out in the late evening, I feel a little peckish. I know I can get "home-made" snacks in Reflections - and they are very good. Sausage rolls are 1 euro, cheese and onion pasties are 1.50, Cornish pasties are 2 euros and a steak pie, with mushy peas and gravy is 2.50. What I didn't know was that all this food is specially made for Reflections by Tim, of El Toro steak house. I read recently in the Spanish papers about a study to improve road safety at a notorious black spot. It's where the road out of Garrucha joins on to the Las Buganvillas to Los Gallardos by-pass. Over the years there have been very many accidents, and quite a few deaths, at this junction and frequently, in my
columns in both Talismán and The Advertiser, I used to state that it was an area crying out for a roundabout. Anyway, the study project to improve road safety here is now completed and, with a great fanfare, Garrucha has announced that its experts have concluded that a roundabout ought to be built to replace the present tangle of roads and islands. Oh, well done! Had they done this fifteen years ago think how many accidents, deaths and serious injuries could have been avoided. By the way, the paper did not say when the work would start, merely that the study project has been successfully concluded. This put me in mind of an incident many, many years ago; I think it was in 1989. As the owner/ editor of Talismán I had an interview with the then mayor of Vera and, amongst other points, I suggested that the deadly crossroads at the newly built Las Buganvillas complex should be made into a roundabout. I was effectively told by the mayor that his Spanish road engineers were better qualified and more informed than some foreign journalist and that what they had built was "the best layout". I then ran a campaign against the crossroads, and even commissioned a satirical cartoon showing this junction, with vultures on all the signposts, praising the freshness of the meat at the local "restaurant". Strangely, after a few politically important figures had suffered accidents, some of them pretty severe, one of the very first roundabouts in this area was
eventually built to replace the crossroads. Unfortunately, it was too late to prevent quite a few deaths. Nowadays, Vera municipality has a veritable plethora of roundabouts. By the way, in which town was the very first roundabout for this area built, and whereabouts? I've got my own idea but, unlike that old mayor of Vera, I'm willing to listen to other suggestions! I saw a notice on a board somewhere offering assistance to anyone whose water or electricity had been cut off. It reminded me of the time in Kenya when our power was cut off. On enquiring, my wife was told the bill had not been paid. "Rot," she cried (or some such equivalent.) "I personally wrote a cheque some time ago and put in into the special post box on your front door, just to be sure you got it." After various officials had investigated, the cheque was found, lurking at the back of an employee's drawer. The power company then said we would be reconnected and graciously added, "This time we won't charge you a re-connection fee - but don't let it happen again." By the way, should your water or power be cut off and you have problems, either due to language difficulties or getting yourself to the appropriate office, try calling 667 846 132 for help. It's a good number to remember for all round help with "officialdom", from the dole office to the hospital. Overheard on a British-run stall at the Villaricos Sunday market, as somebody looked at some golf balls:

Osteria Ristorante Italiano Mojacar
Avda. Andalucia, 16 Tel: 950 615 151 www.osteria-mojacar.com "That make was the predecessor of such and such a make." So, I can only conclude, the golf balls on display died before the other brand appeared. I wonder if the speaker has ever come across the word "precursor"? We have a special chance to enjoy a five piece "light rock" band, on Saturday 12th June. It comprises a keyboard, drummer and three distinct guitars. They will be in the Beachcomber, as a "one off", between 8pm and midnight. The evening will also offer an optional all-you-can-eat meal deal, which will also cater for vegetarians. I'm told the seating will be on the terrace whilst the band will be inside the Beachcomber, with the rest of the inside set up as a cavorting area for those who find the music irresistible and wish to leap about, preferably in time to it! continues on next page

www.advertisermojacar.com I must say you do get very personal service in Bar Esencial. Pam even insisted on using a battery powered device on my inner thigh. Perhaps I had better explain. Seated on a bar stool, I went to add some sugar to my cup of tea, but the bag had a hole in it and sugar spilled all over my lap. Pam rushed to the rescue with a battery powered vacuum cleaner, not so much for my benefit as to clear most of the sugar before it could become scattered all over the floor if I stood up. Everyone in the bar at the time found it most amusing. Old timers will remember Bill and Maria Boswell who, for many years, operated Mojácar's biggest ever booze warehouse, The Liquor Locker. They now live in Wales but still retain their old premises and home, and over the years have often been back to visit their favourite haunts. I gather from their daughter, Vanessa, that Bill and Maria will be here from 2nd June but that this will be their last visit. At the end of June they will return to Wales permanently. So, all you old timers, this is your last chance to drop in and see them. Their house is where it always was, right above the old Liquor Locker, near Thomas supermarket. Incidentally, I gather that the warehouse under their home is available to let. I recently bumped into Charlie Alman. Remember him? He's the fellow wot sells spas that dance about in the sunshine. He tells me that on
18th May, in Velez Rubio, a new health centre was inaugurated, called "The Guggenheim" because the building resembles the museum in Bilbao. There was a grand opening, attended by dignitaries from all over Andalucía, accompanied by a huge dinner. Before we have an outcry against the profligacy of public institutions, I gather that those attending had to fork out personally for their meal tickets. Mind you, it shouldn't have been too hard for them. Even after their recently imposed 5% pay cut, most people employed in the public sector still get much more take home pay than equivalent private sector workers. I'm not sure of the exact figures, but it seems to work out around half as much again! While we're about it, don't forget the PAWS function on the 6th June up at Bar El Pinar. As usual there will be all sorts of home-made goodies available, including lots of pickles, jams and marmalades. I gather there will even be pickled eggs and pickled beetroot. Why not take a spin and, other than the designated driver, return well pickled! In Los Arcos I was talking to Colin and Lucy about "political correctness" and how words which were previously acceptable suddenly become unacceptable to extremists. For instance, phrases like "mentally handicapped", which were specifically coined a few years ago, are now decried by the same "PC"

nutters who had insisted we use them to replace older descriptions. Our conversation moved on to describing colour characteristics, and we wondered how long it would be before it became considered derogatory to describe a fair haired woman as "a blonde" and what to use instead. That's when Colin came up with this gem - "fairly" stupid. (If you're too thick to understand this, you must be a blonde.) And I'll leave you to muse on that "bright" comment until my next patter ... The Rose Singers Spring Concert at The Kimrick 23rd & 24th April 2010 If you missed this concert you missed a real treat. Dedicated to the memory of Peter Goodman who I believe helped some of the Rose Singers when they were first formed. “As Long As We Have Music” with special guest Stuart Green gave the audience a varied programme filled with musical delights and humour well presented, as always, by The Rose Singers, their musical director Alison Jackson and accompanist Pam Peters. TOP SOPRANO needed to join this Mojácar based singing group. Rehearsals are Friday mornings. Ability to read music an advantage but not a necessity - enthusiasm and a good voice the main ingredients. Tel: 950 475 110 INVICTUS "Invictus" is a very good story, very well told. Shortly after Nelson Mandela emerged from 27 years in prison and became president of South Africa in 1994, he seized upon using a rugby World Cup the following year as an opportunity to rally the entire nation -blacks and whites -- behind the far-fetched prospect of the home team winning it all. Inspirational on the face of it, Clint Eastwood's film has a predictable trajectory, but every scene brims with surprising details that accumulate into a rich fabric of history, cultural impressions and emotion. The names of Eastwood and stars Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon should propel this absorbing Warner Bros release to solid returns Stateside, with even better prospects looming in many foreign markets, where an unfamiliar sport and South African politics may pose less of a potential B.O. hurdle.

www.advertisermojacar.com DON’T LET THEM DESTROY THE VILLAGE There was a good turnout of mojaqueros as well as foreigners at the protest against the underground parking near the church. Between 250 - 300 people at a guess, 3 ex mayors and all the aspiring politicians who want foreign voters including some who are in office at the moment. The message … “Don’t let them destroy the village.” The town hall’s plan is to knock down the Loro Azul and the schoolmaster's building, build an underground car park for 40-50 cars, a new town hall and a tourist office at a cost of around 6 million euros!

Your Points of View To The Advertiser Editor In 1988 I had my first experience of Mojácar's political machinations, when there was a demonstration against the then PSOE controlled town hall concerning the lack of parking spaces in the village. I, being a relative newcomer, thought that this was the real reason for what the Spanish called a "manifestación". Some years later I was informed that the rally had actually been motivated by an inter-family dispute over whose plot of land would be purchased, expensively, to create the parking. There have been many tentative projects put forward to create parking, some eminently reasonable, but as far as I know each seems to have fallen foul of self-interest factions. I am given to understand that one project was to create a view point in the main square, with car parking below it. Somewhere along the way the plans were altered to create business premises and this
is where the present tourist information office and the catering college are found. The point I am trying to make is that the provision of parking in Mojácar village seems always to be of secondary importance. The most recent rally against a parking project was to demand that the "historic character and nature of our village, which does so much to attract tourism to the area, should be preserved". However, on the subject of destroying that elusive "historic character", what about the re-modelling of the fuente in the eighties? What about the very un-moorish re-modelling of the area around the Castillo in the nineties? What about the ugly socalled artisan centre in the fuente area, only half built, at what seems great expense, with EU funds? (It wasn't finished until fresh funds were approved years later!) What happened to the Arco de Luciana (Lucinda’s Arch), just beyond the church? What about the approval given for a very modern looking bank building in the main square a few years ago? Much of the quaintness of Mojácar village has already been destroyed. Perhaps this time we ordinary citizens should adamantly support the call to preserve the village. We should insist that all future talk of alterations or parking in the village be forbidden. What remains of the original
village should remain exactly as it is. No new construction should be allowed, and the village can then remain as an (almost) unsullied tourist attraction. Of course, in order for the municipality to function smoothly and swiftly, the town hall and all the municipal administration offices should be moved to easily accessible offices on Mojácar playa, where ample visitor and staff parking can be created. A small town hall extension can remain in the village, for the benefit of villagers, which could be linked electronically with the main town hall for easy access to data. A fine new church could also be built on the playa, designed so as to double as a much needed meeting and concert hall. So let's hear no more talk of extra car parking, or for that matter of any other construction which might jeopardise our ancient monument. Let the sports centre beside the school be the last modern erection ever imposed upon our venerable village, which can be left free, forever more, to nurture souvenir shops and cafes and to welcome coach loads of gawping summer tourists to the remnants of its steep, narrow, winding, historic alleyways. The Advertiser is obviously avidly read. When Petter's Patter mentioned, in the last issue, that on Mondays there are Spanish conversation classes in the Cave Bar, the numbers swelled! There are now two classes, complete beginners at 5.30pm and intermediate classes at 6.30pm. (for those living near Vera playa, there are classes in the Cactus Bar on Thursdays at 5pm.)

Another Problem Caused by De-Forestation!
The Texas Work Force Department claimed the farmer was not paying proper wages to his help, and sent an agent out to interview him. "I need a list of your employees, and how much you pay them," demanded the agent. "Well," replied the rancher, "there's my farm hand, who's been with me for 3 years. I pay him $200 a week plus free room and board. The cook has been here for 18 months, and I pay her $150 per week, plus free room and board. Then there's the half-wit. He works about 18 hours every day and does about 90% of all the work around here. He makes $10 per week, pays his own room and board, and I buy him a bottle of bourbon every Saturday night. He also sleeps with my wife occasionally." "That's the guy I want to talk to … the half-wit," said the agent. The rancher replied ..."That would be me."

Pets of the Moment GENERAL ENQUIRIES 678 490 235 MARY - Beautiful Husky x German Shepherd - D.O.B. 2009 is a quiet and non-aggressive type. She likes people, plays well with other dogs and walks on the leash. At times she may be a little unsure when out in the group to let a stranger catch her but she is very relaxed with her caretakers. RAFFLES - Labrador x Lurcher D.O.B. June 2007 found frightened and abandoned tied to an electric pylon. He was horribly entangled and could not release himself.

LENNY - Pointer - D.O.B. 2004 has a deviation in the muzzle which twists it somewhat to the right. This gives him a slightly unusual expression, which is part of what makes up his charm. ASINA - Dachshund cross has blossomed into a sweet, playful and funloving little character and adores her foster owners. Asina loves going for walks and outings and really gets into heavy duty cuddle sessions and affection fests. She readily makes friends with children and adults as well as other dogs and lives with a resident cat. She is a gentle soul and her carers take her every week to dog school just for the fun of it. She has been a great hit at the PAWSPATAS Road Shows where she works as an Ambassador Dog. Her carers are very anxious to find her a Forever Home very soon as they will be leaving the country in the near future. Can you offer this lovely dog a home? BELLA - short-haired tabby approx. 18 mths/2 yrs of age was discovered in February in the area of Mojácar Pueblo looking for something to eat, going from one terrace of a bar to another, until a kind lady gave her some food and realized she was a domestic cat. Upon asking the owners of the bars and Spanish women who live in that area, they informed her that this cat didn't have a home and at night she tried to get inside the houses to keep out of the rain. Bella is a brown mackerel tabby who enjoys attention on her own terms so will never be in your face, quite happy to live in your home and share your life but an independent girl, happy to be left to her own devices. For further information on BELLA please contact: Diane 664 246 728, Ruth 637 817 982, Tracy 649 237 582 or Sharon 950 592 983.

“Captain (Brian) Cuba” took a trip out on his Garrucha moored boat and I’ll let Brian tell you the story … “The trip started off with a really big swell and it looked like it was going to be a very rocky morning. However it went really calm after about an hour. We anchored in about 175ft just North of the river and the wind took us over the drop off. I caught first, a smallish red snapper. Then, (I can't remember his name) ‘Birthday Boy’ caught a couple of small combers and a small scad. ‘Paul the splash, knee, phone, rope’ (all will be explained later)
then caught a nice red snapper, about 1½ lb. Bites dried up so we headed back to the harbour/garage area, unfortunately ‘??’ began to feel seasick so we went in and dropped him off. It gave us some time to wash the boat down, she needed it, we then went back to our mooring. ‘Farmer Rory’ jumped the 4ft to the rocks and it seems that Paul, who was sat on the back watching, thought the jump looked easy. After passing everything ashore to Rory, Paul chose not to wait for me to pull the boat in and decided to make the 'easy leap'. Paul leaped into space trusting his agility to overcome gravity, it was not to be, gravity took over and he went down and kept going down. Unfortunately he hadn't quite gone far enough and instead of gracefully landing on the rocks he fell 2ft short, grabbing frantically for a tyre as he did so. What a splash, he came out like a drunken walrus, not a pretty sight. I managed to get a photo of him once he was on the rocks. I had real problems keeping the camera steady, it's very difficult when you’re laughing so hard tears come to your eyes. Just before Paul went ashore (I

don't think that is a good way of describing his disembarkation but it will have to do) I told him not to put his mobile in his pocket but did he listen? Now he needs a new phone. Fortunately he didn't really hurt himself, apart from his pride, just a graze on his leg. Well, it just made our day; he had to sit outside the cafe 'drip drying'. It could only happen to Paul. At least he didn't damage the boat! He was really miffed when I asked him to clean the hull whilst he was 'mucking about' in the dock. So all’s well that ends well, Paul went home for a shower and then bed, he’d only had 4 hours sleep the previous night, that's the reason he went swimming, so he said.” BRIAN
Our girl Friday is going to get Andalucian beach, boat and coarse licenses on the 1st June. Please see me at the Beachcomber before the 30th May but phone first to make sure I’m in that day. Remember for beach and boat licenses I need one copy, passport and nie, for each license required. An original English (in date) rod license is also required for the coarse license to save you having to partake in the 24 hour course! (This is for the coarse license only.) Checkout Mojacar’s weather and sea conditions here on the Beachcomber’s webcam. w w w. a l m e r i a f r e e a d s . c o m / webcam For further information on any of the above or to find out about beach, boat or coarse fishing licenses, see John at the Beachcomber Bar Restaurant on Mojacar Playa or tel 950 473 099. In case of difficulty reaching me (probably out fishing) ask staff for my mobile number.

CLEO IS STILL MISSING Although she has been sighted, the last time in Turre / Los Gallardos area, by the time the owners got there she was nowhere to be found, they do however thank all those who have taken the time to call.

IN SEARCHING FOR CLEO THEY HAVE RESCUED FOUR GALGOS THAT NEEDED HELP - PAWS HAS TWO OF THEM IN NOW - THIS FOLLOWED PEOPLE PHONING TO SAY THAT THEY HAD SEEN CLEO.
CLEOS OWNERS CANNOT GIVE UP HOPE THAT SHE IS STILL IN THE AREA - IF YOU SEE HER, OR EVEN THINK YOU’VE SEEN HER, PLEASE CALL 687 792 655 - 667 252 644 - 600 268 064 A reward is offered for information leading to her safe return

Dawn Tebbutt, at the far end of the table, with her husband Martin, on the right, and her sons Dominic and Jack (yellow shirt). Rene, (second from left) who had been here last year with her husband Charlie (he's wearing the black and white stripes) also submitted an entry, but it was in her daughter's name and didn't get drawn. Then the other winning family was unable to come and, to Rene's delight, her daughter's involuntary entry won the re-draw ... and here they are! The event was sponsored by the Mojácar Business Association, ACEM. Standing behind the winners are (left to right) Gill from Bonita, Ann from Ventanas y Puertas, and Pat and Mike from Arriba, all of whom are members of ACEM. Unfortunately, Petter’s dictaphone went out of kilter so the names of Rene's daughter, her husband and her grandson were not recorded. PAGE 34
