ell, haven’t you all been busy. This issue is so packed full of photos I haven’t been able to fit in any facts about May or ‘on this day’ dates. So I shall use this opportunity to tell you that the flower is Lily of the Valley and the gemstone is Emerald. Also that May is named after the Greek goddess, Maia. So now you know! On the 14th April I went to the ‘acem’ Mojacar Business Association meeting at the Hotel Puntazo, details of which are on page 10. Because of the poor attendance I have since wondered if people are aware that you DON’T have to be a member of the association to go to these meetings. In order to fulfil their aim of improving the profile and facilities of the area for the community as a whole they are also looking to form a Resident’s Association but in order to do this they need
your support, thoughts and suggestions. Thanks as always to all the contributors of articles, reviews and news and for sending in your photos but special thanks have to go to ‘Chilli D’, Petter and Ian of Bluwater Web Design for their tireless efforts in capturing everything I asked for and more! And apologies to Ian’s wife, Jan, for messing up her filofax when I changed the days and times!!! Keep sending it all in and don’t forget Father’s Day on the 20th June. See you next month, Tracey

♣According to the Spanish press ♣Irish Rover have asked me to put it’s possible that the Minister for Health is considering putting off the zero tolerance smoking legislation until 2011, at least for bars and cafes. It was indicated that there may be political reasons for this due to the Spanish election coming up in the next 12 months and that although the PP are supporting the new bill the legislation could possibly lead to a loss of smoker’s votes for the PSOE. Plus there is pressure from both the hostelry industry and the tobacco companies to put off the change for as long as possible due to fears of profit and job losses. The hostelry industry in particular fears that the increase in IVA on July 1st coupled with a smoking ban will scupper any chance for a revival in their fortunes this summer. I received an email from a concerned Mojácar resident regarding three new arrivals to the playa who have set up a scratch card scam to operate in this area. Apparently you are offered a free scratch card and surprise, surprise, you win a holiday. You are then whisked off to their office, thought to be by the Parque Comercial where they put you through a hard sell! It is believed they are from Nerja and have been heard bragging that they can make up to 3,000 euros a week off trusting holiday makers. The concerned resident took it upon herself to do a quick google search on their company name and Nerja, links are in a separate box below (too long for the columns) if you want to check them out for yourself. El Naranjo in Los Gallardos has just undergone a 60 hour make over! They have a new colour scheme, chill out room, three TVs ready for the World Cup, including one on the outside terrace area, a surround sound system and their new quiz and karaoke nights have been organised with “Northern Lights” to start from 6th May. Thursday is to be Quiz night, 8.30pm and Karaoke will be Friday also at 8.30pm. Due to its popularity, poker at Roly’s Too can now be played on Sunday afternoon at 2pm as well as Wednesday at 8pm.

a call out for any performers willing to do a 20 to 30 minute session for their benefit night in aid of the Fireman’s Benevolent Fund and the Red Cross scheduled to take place on Saturday 28th August. For the vegetarians amongst you. Zak’s Plaice in Garrucha told me that he cooks all his chips in pure vegetable oil only and nothing else is ever cooked in that fryer. If you’re into cheese and chutneys, etc. then here’s something which may be of interest to you. The “English Cheese Man” visits the Lemon Lounge usually towards the end of the month, but not necessarily every month so best to check with Chris, with a variety of wares. Last time the selection of cheeses included wensleydale, strong cheddar, stilton and some very interesting flavours such as cheddar with caramelized onions or with chilli peppers and white stilton with mango and ginger. There are also crackers, Branston pickle and port to accompany the cheeses and last time there was also a range of tangy Jules and Sharpie chutneys and a hot rhubarb and ginger jam. You can taste all the chutneys and most of the cheeses before purchase and they are all reasonably priced. The Anglican Church Spring Fair is to be held on Wednesday 5th May at the Hotel Puntazo, Mojácar Playa starting at 10.00am. There will be a large range of stalls with something for everyone. Ladies’ and gents’ clothes, jewellery, bric-a-brac, games, children’s clothes, homemade cakes and plenty of books as well as raffles, cava and shortbread to keep you happy! This is one of the Church’s main fundraising events of the year. The Church is totally self funding and gives generously to charities. Donations will be welcomed - either prizes for the raffles or items to sell on the stalls. If you have any items you wish to donate contact Tony Baugh 950 475 310, Dorothy Smith 950 478 066 or any member of the church. Parish website: www.mojacarchurch.org

sale on. All their clothing is now only 1 euro per item. Sunday 9th May is Open Gardens Day at Cabrera. From 2.30pm until 6.30pm nine gardens will be opened to the public. Each garden is totally different and offers superb views of the mountains, sea and valleys. There will be three tea outlets where you can rest and be refreshed with teas, etc. and homemade cakes. Entry to all gardens is by ticket, 5 euros per person (children free), and are on sale at the Arch in Cabrera. All ticket proceeds are in aid of MACS Cancer Support Group who will be represented on the day. Call out service offered scheduled for Sunday 2nd May has been brought forward to Saturday the 1st for the month of May only (which means there will be no live music at this one). There is also a Rastro/Boot Sale as well as the farmers’ produce, cakes, pies, etc. and the start time is 12 mid-day. For anyone interested in having a stall there is no charge. The Slow Roast Lamb is as popular as ever on a Sunday with their special ‘secret recipe’ house sauce – rich tomatoes, aubergines, herbs … During the week they are now offering Half Roast Chicken with Potatoes (with or without the house sauce) plus a drink for 7.95 euros including a starter. Siobhan says that although their hours are 12.00pm until 6.00pm they are happy to stay open in the evening if you book in advance and to remember that they can also cater for private parties. And finally … a bit of good news for businesses. Apparently the first batch of tourists will arrive at the Pueblo Indalo on Monday 6th May and according to the local tour company manager, this year there are already many more booked to come than last year. And finally, finally … Hopefully by the time this issue comes out the road from the sea front leading up to Zak’s Plaice in Garrucha will have re-opened.

ALMANZORA TEAM WINS GRAND QUIZ This year's Molly Malone 'Quiz of Quizzes' was won by a team from the Almanzora Group of Friends - an organisation based in Albox to assist ex-pats in the Almanzora region. The runner up was a team from the Blue Parrot bar/restaurant on Vera Playa. The event raised 1,800 euros for Asprodalba - an occupational centre in Vera for people with learning difficulties which is of particular interest to the winners because it is their nominated charity for 2010. "We are very impressed with the work of Asprodalba," commented David Durrant who, with his wife Anne, represented the winning team at the presentation ceremony held at the occupational centre in April. The Almanzora Group of Friends runs a centre in Albox with a library and information leaflets, as well as a social club which organises quiz nights, coach trips, dinner dances, car treasure hunts, and so on, and produces a monthly newsletter. Director and founder of Asprodalba, Ignacio Martín was overwhelmed by the donation which he said was "felt from the heart." Also attending the presentation were the founders of the Molly Malone Quiz, Ray and Siobhan, the organisers Bel and Rob Old, and Alan Walklate the owner of Frankie’s Bar on Vera Playa, where the event was held.

After 6 years inside The Word, with Graham and Pauline Hart, they found that more room was needed to expand their range of goods. Now when you go in to order your new laptop or computer system, they have the space to sit down and discuss your exact requirements. Having taken on the low cost mobile phone and internet provider Masmovil, space was needed to display the range of sims and modems (dongles) and to accommodate the clients going in to sign up for their great deals. I
have been getting an unusual amount of spam mail in the last few weeks, it’s getting annoying. Coupled with my first incident of identity theft a couple of weeks ago this has started to vex me somewhat. I must assume that these incidents are linked because I have been doing quite a lot of internet shopping lately. I don’t want to stop online shopping because I save a fortune shopping this way. As far as the identity theft goes I was lucky. My bank noticed that it might be strange that I bought things from three different websites at exactly the same moment, this included a few thousand euros of double glazing. The bank phoned me and asked if I knew anything about it. I said yes it saves you a lot of money off your heating bills and can make your home more secure. The caller waited for me to stop laughing and then told me they could stop the transaction going through, luckily for me. People getting your card details is not an easy matter to resolve but stopping spam is an achievable task. The problem of spam and identity theft can arise from just visiting websites where quite often you must register to enter, sometimes involving card details as a way to prove who you are. This may end in nothing worse than having to delete a couple of dozen spam mails from your inbox every day. I have had enough of doing that so I am using a new site for browsing. It’s called www.guerrillamail.com. The guys at guerrilla have a very simple site that just gives you a temporary email address. You click
the box requesting a temporary addy and it is immediately generated. From this point onwards you have one hour to mail whatever you like to whoever you like without being traced because the guerrilla guys filter it all for you. One hour may not seem long enough for some sites so if you revisit the guerrillas you can add more time, one hour at a time. It is immediately obvious to someone with a corrupted mind (so I am told) that this facility could be abused for things like online bullying. The guerrillas are aware of this and keep records, so beware, you are not completely anonymous by using this facility you are simply barricaded by www.guerrillamail.com from the outside virtual world. It don’t mean the cops won’t turn up at your door in the real world. There is not much else to add to this really except to perhaps warn you about the new trend in spamming that I am experiencing. I have asked around a bit and it is for sure that I am not the only one getting this junk. It starts with a “mail delivery status notification” if these things are real they are helpful little devices to let you know your email didn’t arrive at its intended destination. If it is not real, it is someone trying to draw you in to what ever scam trap they have in mind for you. You have been warned!!! There is something else I found online that I am dying to tell you about but there is not enough room in this edition so you will have to look forward to news about the dark side of one of Mojácar´s prodigies or the racism of Disney. There will also be a few short words about gender reassignment and the hollywoodisation of popular culture. The acem held a meeting on the 14th April at Hotel Puntazo which was attended by only 32 people. The meeting was opened with a run down of the objectives of the association and what they had done so far such as the Sun Talk road shows, the holiday competition, dinner dance, fashion show, etc. It was reported that all the events up to now had been positively received by residents and public alike. The website had had over 25,000 hits and the competition had been entered by 1,200 people. Jon Gaunt will be back to interview the competition winners on 24th May at Tito’s Beach Bar and the association is endeavouring to get both national and international media to come along. Ideas for future events include: a garden party at Macenas Beach Club – when the competition winners are here; a Tour de Tapas competition – possibly in June; monthly brainstorming breakfast meetings – to offer ideas; a market selling quality authentic products of the area and produce, The Delfos being the suggested venue and an acem members exhibition – for members to promote their particular lines of business. It was also suggested that people get together, whether members or not, to form a kind of work group, to thrash out ideas and suggestions about how, and what, they think would improve the profile of the area for both residents and tourists, for leisure or business purposes, to put forward to the association. Another idea, for which funds would have to be raised of approximately 6,000 to 7,000 euros, is to erect a bronze statue of Walt Disney, along with the family history, on the Plaza Castillo as a reference point to the pueblo itself with the aim of it becoming a major tourist attraction. The issue of there being no public transport after 8pm was raised from the floor which the association is going to try to address and the rumour of a Theme Park being built in Vera quashed as it is actually going to be built in Murcia. In all the message is for more businesses to join to enable a louder voice and for everyone to work together to compete against other resorts, not against each other. For up-to-date information on events, contact and joining details e-mail: esmojacar@gmail.com or visit esmojacar.com or www.mojacarlife.com

We then react to that event and create something else with our physical movements. This in turn may lead to us creating some additional stress or tension and then all of a sudden we end up with a head ache. If as an alternative to reacting to that event we could just have observed it and let go of our need to react. We could then probably have avoided causing unnecessary stress and tension which in this example ended up as an ache in our head. One of the early points we focus on in our Tai Ji instruction is RAC. Relaxation, Awareness and Concentration. By being aware of the importance of relaxing our physical body we can learn to let go of the physical tension we are holding onto. In particular in our head, neck and shoulders, our lower back and in our muscles in general. As soon as we bring awareness or consciousness to the fact that we have some tension in our bodies, then we can start to exercise our minds right to choose if we wish to continue to hold onto the tension, or let it go. As we further our exercise and awareness in areas such as our standing post meditation then we can start or continue the process of becoming more aware of our energy and in particular our intrinsic or internal energy. With practice and persistence over time we can begin to discover the power of our energy and how we choose to use it. Next month's article will discuss further some of the advantages and benefits of taking part in regular Tai Ji practice. See advert opposite for details of classes.

ranging, are only basic knowledge, and very interesting (except airlaw!). 4. Pass a flight test with a CAA examiner. After that, if you want to progress to your JAR PPL, you need to complete a further 15 hours training, usually in a Cessna. These are split between instrument appreciation, more navigation, and more solo time. You also have to take another Law paper and Flight test. There are two English schools in the area. Nick Esterson at Totana, flies an AX3 and a Mainair blade (but not at the same time!) These are both open cockpit first generation microlights. He charges about 100 euros per hour. Solaero have moved to a private strip near Sorbas. Their dashing young instructor Chris Pickles (see pic below!) flies an Aeromoragon M1 (see pic above!!), which is like a baby Cessna. We charge 120 euros per hour, or 10 hours at 1,000 euros. Training in a Cessna 172 for the JAR PPL is 190 euros per hour. There is also the Muller aeroclub at Vera, they are mainly German speaking, and fly an Icarus C42 microlight at about 200 euros per hour. The medical costs, 162 euros at present, the exams 200 euros, the flight test 170euros. Administration is around 150 euros. Freedom of the skies possible for about 3 grand! Well how much is a set of top drawer golf clubs? Be different!!

P
revious articles have given you an insight on flying in the area, how affordable it is, and how anybody can learn to be a pilot. I thought this time I would explain how to get your Private Pilots License, where you can train locally, and costs. The cheapest, and easiest route, is to first obtain your microlight license. The training counts towards the full JAR PPL if you want to take things further. Microlight is a word I hate, it conveys the wrong image, the term Light Sports Aircraft is increasingly used, and rightly so. These are proper aeroplanes, that share the same characteristics as their bigger Cessna/Piper brothers. I really believe that flying a Micro is more demanding than the larger stuff. We go into much shorter fields, are more wind affected, and we develop better judgment of heights, angles, and attitudes because we don’t have so many instruments doing it for us! The microlight license requires the following: 1. A class 2 medical certificate – Similar to the standard required to drive an HGV, so eat lots of pies, swear profusely, develop homicidal tendencies and you’ll pass! Train with us and we organize the medical for you. 2. Complete a minimum of 25 hours flying training, of which at least 10 hours must be flown solo. There is a license that can be obtained in 15, but it carries restrictions. 3. Complete examinations in Meteorology, Navigation, Airlaw, Human factors and Aircraft technical. Sounds horrendous, but the subjects, although wide
ai Ji has been referred to in many different ways over the 10 years of my experience to date in practising the art."The thinking person's martial art" "Soft Style" "You're just standing there waving your arms about" to name three. In all that we do in our day to day lives, are we not looking to understand our differences and searching for that elusive perfect balance? Balance between masculine and feminine, the clarity and the uncertainty, the black and the white. There are so many paradoxes and dualities which create opposites. In Tai Ji terms we would be looking to distinguish between the Yin and the Yang, the substantial and the insubstantial or the empty and the full. Part of this process is to discover what is going on in the inside, away from thoughts and more into feelings. Out of the mental and more into the physical so thereby we are feeling what is going on rather than thinking what is going on. This internal or inside journey is supported in Tai Ji by standing postures (Zhan zhuang) where we are learning about our Qi or our intrinsic energy. Our Tai Ji training assists us in developing our patience and in the letting go process. What do we mean by letting go and of what I hear you ask? Tension or stress is something that all of us have, and for many of us, we are holding onto that tension or stress. It is held both in our physical bodies and in our mental and emotional processes. In other words, some of our physical actions and reactions are really caused by our mental and emotional thoughts. For example something happens (a verbal disagreement) that we may react to that causes an emotion of frustration, anger or anxiety.

FOOTBALL IS BACK IN MOJÁCAR! By P. Joby Polansky © 2010. Here are a few up-dates on football’s return to Mojácar. La Finca had another invite to play the Veteranos of Garrucha. For those of you who did not catch the details of the very first game we played against them, we lost 7-2. We later found out why we were so overwhelmed – they are Campeones Regionales (Regional Champions) Categoria Veterano - the best veteran team out of 12 municipalities in the area ! Sporting our new red bibs, a nice donation from Graeme Stewart; we managed to hold them off to a 2-2 draw! The nice thing about the match was that it was obvious we had made a marked improvement over the months between games. Further, we were invited to have drinks with them after the match at the Garrucha Municipal Field bar which included some paella and other tasty tapas. The game itself was exciting seeing that both teams played very competitively, and it was almost lost when a Veterano dribbled 3 of ours and was brought down in the box for a penalty in the very final minute of the game. (He was not going to burn me, and he did, so I had to take him out). Surely, this would be another victory for Garrucha. Our goalies Andy and “Danny the Dice” had already had a great match between them, both with some amazing saves, and Danny managed to keep this one out too. Great stuff!
Despite some of the rough tackles from both sides, we will be invited back to Garrucha again soon. The following week, and riding on that euphoria of knowing that we get better and better all the time, we were reminded by Los Gallardos of our humble beginnings. While the first few minutes were quite even, their speed, good passing, communication and fitness prevailed in a very big way. La Finca took a vote after the match and as a result we are not reporting the final score at this time (we will have to tell you in secret and in person). Suffice it to say it was a good thrashing on Los Gallardos’ part. AND we actually had a small crowd watching us too! As I mentioned in my last article, new players are welcome to join us - it is open to all. We are, however, forming a core team from our Sunday group for the more formal matches, so if you want to be a part of that, one has to be a regular on our Sunday mornings now. Spectators are welcome too, although at the moment it is standing room only. You will figure out why when you come to watch us @ Campo de Fútbol Municipal de Mojácar, 10:30am - 10:45am – just up the road from the Continental (Juan the Butchers) and follow the orange signs with the football in them. If you are late, it does not matter either, we will fit you in somewhere.

So one dull, quite chilly Friday evening, yes it was recent and in April, we headed for the cosy, heated, covered terrace at Arriba Café Bar and settled down with a pleasant bottle of house red, Castillo de Soldepeñas 7.50b, to peruse the new menu, well my two companions did, I had water being the designated driver. There are a choice of four starters, four mains and four sweets for the very reasonable price of 11.95b. We chose Prawn and Crab Timbale, Home-made Chicken Pate and a

Salad with Serrano Ham and Goats Cheese. Soup of the Day was also available. I really enjoyed my salad, sampled the timbale which was very delicate and tasted the pate which was delicious. All agreed the starters were very nice. Main course choices include Rump Steak with garlic and herb butter, Chicken stuffed with spinach and blue cheese with tamale sauce, Poached Salmon or Home-made Lasagne, all served with french fries or potatoes of the day and vegetables or salad. We had the Rump Steak and the Chicken. My steak was very good and cooked just as I like it, medium rare. The chicken was succulent and the spinach and blue cheese stuffing delicious. We chose garlic creamed potatoes with cheese which were creamy and very tasty. The main men u is also available and Dave couldn’t resist the giant cod, chips and mushy peas, a truly enormous plateful for 7.95b. He thoroughly enjoyed his fish and claimed that whilst it might not be the biggest fish he had ever eaten it certainly was the biggest in the last 10 years. I overheard two diners on a table of five nearby say that the fish was “absolutely wonderful” and “best fish on the playa”. High praise indeed. Now for desserts. We were offered Cheesecake of the Day which was
chocolate bounty, Ginger Cake, Lemon Meringue Pie, Banoffee Pie or Peach and Pear Crumble. If you haven’t room for one of these delights you can have Tea or Coffee instead which Dave wisely decided to do. However not being one to shirk my responsibilities I opted for the crumble served with creamy custard and “T” had Lemon Meringue both were delicious, my only complaint being, boy was I full!!! As well as the main menu there is a selection from the grill including Rib Eye and Sirloin steaks, Pork Cutlet, Goujons of Cod and Garlic Prawns. You can relax with a choice of five red wines and three whites starting from 7.50b a bottle. Another recent innovation is the Afternoon Menu - a selection of tapas available daily (except Sundays). You can choose individual tapas or the special 4 tapas plus a carafe of wine for 8b. Pie Days are Tuesday and Thursday with a choice of four pies available each week at 4.95b each or 2 for 9.00b and a bottle of house wine for 5b. Roast Lunches are served on Sundays where you can choose from Beef, Pork, Chicken or Slow Roast Lamb priced at 6.95b for 1 course, 8.50b for 2 courses and 10.00b for 3 courses, all fresh and well prepared by chef Marius (aka Mal to his friends).
Pat & Mick with staff on the Greek Night, just one of their many theme nights. Arriba Café Bar has an open and closed terrace with lovely views and some seating inside with a small bar where you will be made very welcome by Pat and Mick whether it be for a meal or just a drink. Look out for their Party Night in celebration of their 3rd Anniversary. (Doesn’t time fly!!!) Val Carrington

Solomojacar is taking on new properties every week now and because all of our advertised properties have no commission included in the price we are getting quite a lot of interest from our advertising. The Website: We are getting hits all the time and if you look at any property you can see how many viewings it has had, for example property 1017 has had over 70 people looking at its details. Our Office: Every day I get over 30 people into the office
with numerous others looking at the large screen and window display and not one day has gone past without someone requesting details from one or more of the properties displayed. Digital Screens: With the screens in The Irish Rover, Cielo Rojo, The Petrol Station and GB Stores showing the properties every hour they are open, client’s properties are getting lots of exposure. Spectrum Radio: Our advert is now in the 2nd month of
advertising and this is helping the website get more and more hits with the website mentioned over 8 times a day and also my appearance on the business show in April. The Advertiser: As you can see we now have booked the centre 2 pages of this very popular magazine every month which again gives your details and a decent size photo of your property. You will see from the adverts below we have a few properties that have reduced their price this
month to give even greater value to all you would be purchasers so why not give any of the owners a call whose property you would like more details of. All this for a one off fee and discounted if you are a Telitec customer. Just send Gary 6 or 7 good photos and your property will be up on the website within 48 hours. www.advertisermojacar.com A BUCKET OF CASH FOR F.A.C.E. At the social dance held by Pamela's Line Dance Club at Bar Latino's in La Alfoquía on Saturday 10th April, a presentation was made to F.A.C.E. (Fundraising In Arboleas Caring For Everyone) committee members Carrie Green and Gilly Elliott-Binns. The presentation was of a bucket of cash containing 340 Euros. Pamela's Line Dancer's had raised the cash over the last six months by holding a Christmas Raffle, selling books and magazine's and by holding coin collections.
Over the years Pamela's Line Dancer's have become quite famous for their fundraising activities. They have raised money for Breast Cancer and the Asprodalba Charity in Vera. Their next challenge is to raise money for Pancreatic Cancer. Pamela says the number of folk on the floor for each individual dance was evident of the way lots of Social Dancing increases ability!
On Saturday 6th March Sunseed Project and the Pita-Eco-School had an Open Day, in whic h more than 30 people came to visit both projects, taking part in the various activities and tours. Sunseed started the environmental awareness activities at 11am with a Clay Seed Ball workshop, explaining how this simple method is used for reforestation. After that there was a guided tour of the project and a quiz game with questions about sustainability, energy consumption, waste of water, etc. At 2pm more than 20 people enjoyed a delicious home-made vegan cooked meal with organic vegetables from Sunseed gardens. During the meal, the visitors had the opportunity to talk with the coordinators of each department of the project: eco-construction, organic growing, appropriate technology, drylands management, sustainable living and education, publicity and fundraising. After lunch there was a Tree Planting activitity in Sunseed drylands, continuing the principle of reforestation that Sunseed was founded on over 20 years ago. More than 100 native trees such as carob, strawberry, pine, olive, palm, etc. were donated by the Environment Concejalía and Sorbas Municipality. The day ended with an inspiring short film, The Man Who Planted Trees, about reforestation and the importance of caring and protecting the environment. The day continued at the Pita-Eco-School, with its creator, the German artist Timbe. Visitors enjoyed discovering the world of the Pitas-Agave plant. A photo exposition and information about the botanical aspects of the pita plant was distributed, along with handmade products and musical instruments made of Pita such as lamps, paper knives, drums, magical villages, didgeridoos, Pita-Rociera, Pita-Flauts, etc. They could also discover how Pita is an alternative to the industrial process: organic plastic, insulin, surf boards, food, soaps, tequila and beer, are some of the examples. During the afternoon Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony, the green coffee beans were roasted and the visitors learnt about its origin and traditional Ethiopian preparation. Film projection took participants from the world of the Pita to Ethiopia, to Timbe's other project, a family NGO that finances several aid projects in Ethiopia, such as the maintenance of an orphanage and the construction of a school for 1,000 students. The day ended at night with the recording of a live music Jam Session at the Pita-Eco-School. Every Tuesday both projects have activities open to visitors. Sunseed has guided tours of the project and PitaEco-School workshops and visits. People interested in visiting or taking part in current and future activities of the projects can contact: Sunseed - Patricia on 950 525 770 or E-mail: sunseedspain@arrakis.es or visit www.sunseed.org.uk Pita-Eco-School - Timbe on 630 661 865 or E-mail: timbedrums@hotmail.com or visit www.timbedrums.com We would like to thank to all the media that had supported us by publishing our announcement and to all our visitors for contributing to the success of our Open Day and take part in the activities.

They are looking for both men and women of all voices who enjoy singing a variety of songs. It will be based initially in Zurgena but people from any area are most welcome. followed by a buffet, provided by Eileen, which included amongst others, a traditional Irish Stew with Soda bread and Irish coffees. The foundation then held an auction and raffle of items provided by supporters of the charity, as well as many local businesses and shops. The evening ended with more music provided by Brendan, as well as dancing into the night. In total, approximately 600 euros was raised for the foundation. The committee would like to thank all those who came along and supported the event and those who donated items to the auction and raffle. Finally, the committee would like to pass on their heartfelt gratitude to Brendan, for making the night so successful and providing the 'Irish charm' as well as to Eileen and Tony at The Palms, for providing the venue and buffet. Could you spare an hour or two to help Puppy Rescue? They urgently need help walking the dogs and puppies in the care of this Albox charity. Abandoning your Dogs and Pets is an Illegal Offence
Following discussions with Seprona, the animal welfare branch of The Guardia Civil, it has become apparent that, the abandonment of dogs and pets is classified as animal cruelty and, as such, is an illegal offence. The Dog House Foundation of Huercal Overa will work closely in conjunction with Seprona, to secure a conviction of anyone found to be abandoning or mistreating animals. Anyone with information regarding the abandonment or mistreatment of animals, or requiring further information can contact The Dog House Foundation by telephone on 626 766 073 or by email at thedoghse@hotmail.com

The pitter patter of petty pennings
The UK's Statute of Anne, enacted 300 years ago, was the world's first law to protect copyright. Protection lasted 14 years, and it could be granted another 14 year extension if the author(s) were still alive, but no more. Copyright law was built into the US Constitution, which granted copyright protection "for Limited Times to Authors and Inventors." Initially the US Congress imitated the 14-plus-14 conditions set by the Statute of Anne. Since then copyright protection has been extended to protect not merely authors, but also rights holders until far beyond an author's death. It was 28 plus 14 years in 1831, 28-plus-28 in 1909, and then became either 75 years or until 50 years after an author's death in 1976. Now it extends to the author's lifetime plus 70 years, or 120 years after authorship or 95 years after publication for what is termed works of "corporate authorship." An example is the ownership of the cartoon drawings of Mickey Mouse, created in 1928 and surely now, like Little Red Riding Hood, in the public domain. This is why the latest version of American copyright law is often derisively referred to as "The Mickey Mouse Act"! Here is a perfect example of Big Business "persuading" a government to give them a cushy number and stifle competition. It certainly doesn't protect long dead authors. It protects big name labels, especially in the fashion and music industry, who themselves create no input but
who buy up the rights to names and then live off them like leeches. What true right to intellectual ownership do they have? In a word, "None"! For as long as this state of affairs continues, piracy and counterfeiting will be rife. I got this from the BBC website: Promiscuous women are responsible for earthquakes, a senior Iranian cleric has said. Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedighi told worshippers in Tehran last Friday that they had to stick to strict codes of modesty to protect themselves. "Many women who do not dress modestly lead young men astray and spread adultery in society which increases earthquakes," he said. I have a question for this learned man. "If adultery, as caused by immodestly dressed women, is responsible for earthquakes, why are there so few quakes in Britain?" Well, we’ve had our annual rehearsal for the horrors of the summer season with once again the beach road being packed with traffic. I did smile when I heard the tale of a Mercedes, obviously on holiday, overtaking a line of cars and suddenly smacking into a "resalto" (i.e. a sleeping policeman wearing zebra striped pyjamas.) The driver obviously didn’t know Mojácar as well as he thought he remembered it. My spy who reported this to me said that he hoped the grating sound he heard coming from below the Mercedes was really expensive. The new roundabout near the beach bars worked well and the town planners deserve congratulations for it. The roundabout is also being superbly "beautified" with an olive tree, roses and ivy. That's far more attractive than putting some sort of overpriced "art" on it.
Make a date for 14th August in Bar La Rotonda de Patxi. As usual, that will be when Patxi holds his wildly eccentric "New Year’s Eve" party, complete with Santa Claus outfits, snow covered Christmas tree and midnight grapes. He first made this event famous at the bar Habanero, at Mojácar Fuente. His new bar is in the same building as the Gaviota, Lemon Lounge and Ramo del Limon. Are you young, reasonably good looking, preferably not British and definitely non committal? If so I know a lady who just might be right up your street but I’m not telling you who she is or where she works, other than that her name begins with the letter "D" and you can sometimes find her serving behind a bar. I was talking to Mojácar property owner, Johnnie Simms on Skype (his Skype name is True Blue) and he was telling me that he has had to submit a self assessment of the fire risk of his home, because he runs a small B&B in the UK. He was told he could do everything on line - which was great - until "officialdom" continued that he could even pay on line." “Pay?” he ejaculated. Apparently before the UK self assessment form even comes up you have to pay £199. It reminded me of the story of Tom Sawyer charging people to paint his fence. It seems that the UK Fire Service now charge you for the pleasure of doing their work for them. On Easter Sunday we drifted down to the Gaviota for our tea and coffee. We had two café americanos, one tea, a tapa of salmon on toast and a tapa of lomo de cerdo on toast, both substantial. When we came to

Reading La Voz de Almería recently I saw that SEPRONA, the environment arm of the Guardía Civil, caught four people who had illegally fished 120 kilos of carp from the dam at Cuevas del Almanzora. Seprona also confiscated two inflatable boats which were used to drag a "professional" fishing net through the water in order to capture the carp, most of which were now dead. As is customary, the few that were still living were returned to the water by the Guardia. I also read that plans have taken one step further in the creation of an industrial area for Garrucha, which will be near the exit from the town in the direction of Turre. Meanwhile, Morocco is planning to make an area of Tangiers into a duty-free port, which will decidedly change the economics of this area. The government will be offering almost free land in these The pitter patter of petty pennings continues on page 26

DA YBREAKERS DAYBREAKERS The film starts off where the human race is essentially wiped out and replaced by vampires. Daybreakers has little more on its mind than presenting a neo-noir, semi-sci-fi future in which the blood supply has been sucked almost literally bone dry. Vampires everywhere, living a life not so dissimilar from that which we humans currently enjoy, are on the verge of starvation. The government has determined that the remaining blood supply will only last the population another thirty days. Some vamps have started feeding on themselves, transforming into horrific mutants with little semblance of self-control. Meanwhile, the efforts to finance the engineering of a biologically acceptable blood substitute are producing less-than-acceptable results. Enter Edward Dalton (Ethan Hawke), a reluctant vampire and haematologist employed by the shadowy company controlled by the tremendously successful and greedily vampiric entrepreneur, Charles Bromley (Sam Neil). On what must certainly be the most eventful night of his life, Dalton oversees a failed test of the blood substitute, crashes into a band of rogue humans, lets them go, returns home to be attacked by one of the mutant, cannibal vampires and is summarily saved by the appearance of his vampire-to-the-core brother, just recently returned home from military service. All of which set in motion the events which will find Dalton teaming up with the humans – including a mysterious figure played byWillem Dafoe – in order to indentify a cure for the vampiric disease and return everybody to their original human state.

continued duty-free areas with financial advantages, such as fiscal exemptions, for people taking up the offers. Salaries are about 70 percent lower than those of Spain. As the papers rather aptly put it, Morocco is "creating an Andorra at the other end of Spain." Estate agents buy and sell property. But I've just come across an agent who doesn't have a single brick or pat of mortar in sight. He's in the business of selling businesses, usually to folk in Granada. If you'd like to retire or perhaps leave the area but need to sell your business first, see if this number can help – 0034 667 846 132. Let him know where you got the number and he might even buy me a cuppa and take out an advert in your favourite magazine!! The wife wanted a new pair of elegant navy blue shoes, specially for our son's forthcoming wedding. Having drawn a blank in all the shops in Mojácar, Garrucha and Vera, she was considering a shopping trip to Almería city. However, we decided to check out Lorca first, had a wonderful time, and returned with exactly what she wanted - for a bargain price. The moral to this story? Go shopping in Lorca. You can usually park in the underground public car park just behind the theatre, but there are other parking spots as well. Then PAGE 26
stroll up and down the main street where there are some excellent shops with excellent items in them. There are also plenty of refreshment parlours dotted around! When you're ready to return, take the road from Lorca signposted for Aguilas. In five minutes you will reach a huge shopping centre, on your right, which is reminiscent of a whole collection of English high streets, all joined together. There are many well-known names whilst the shop assistants seem so much more friendly than many of our local ones. Also, the clothing ranges are far less "boutique-like" and, instead, have pleasantly elegant designs. Most of the complex is sort of outdoors, which helps to get round the no smoking indoors ban. One word of advice though. Since it is not covered, if the weather looks changeable take a brolly or parasol. There is also a cinema here and you can look for forthcoming movies at www.acecalmenara.com In February of this year house sales rose by 5.6 percent, when compared with February of last year. Government spokesmen will happily quote this statistic. In actual fact, most of the increase is in house resales, often by desperate sellers willing to accept any offer, rather than in sales of new properties. Current figures show that every day an average of 10 people in Almería province lose their home from not being able to keep up with their mortgage payments. In 2009 alone 3,500 families lost their homes. Opposition spokesmen prefer to quote this latter statistic.
Unlike the so called bankers responsible for the present crisis, who tend to operate by speculation, Cajamar is very much a "go getting" banking group. One of Cajamar's recent projects is to encourage the reintroduction of table grapes in interior areas of Almería province. Many years ago Almería had 6,500 hectares of land under cultivation for table grapes but this has gradually dropped until today there are only a "symbolic" 300 hectares still under such cultivation. This, Cajamar has announced, it intends to change and is busy persuading farmers to expand production! Cajamar makes much of its money by financing well thought out projects and ensuring that they really are successful. It also absorbs other savings banks and, on the 15th of February this year, absorbed Caja Rural, Caja Campo, Caja Rural de Casinos and Caixa Albalat. As far as I can gather, the new grouping has something like 28 billion euros of assets and made a yearly gross operating margin of 714 billion. Not bad for what was a tiny Almerian savings bank in 1987 when we first arrived in Mojácar. Do you wish to learn "get by" Spanish? In other words, rather than having the finer points of Spanish grammar drilled into you, do you wish to be able to survive in shops and restaurants. After all, you can always hire an interpreter for tricky dealings with officialdom. (In other words, would you prefer to decline any invitation to decline?) Well, there is a basic Spanish conversation group which meets every Monday in the Cave Bar, hosted by a fluently
bi-lingual lady. The sessions start just before 5.30 and cost only 5 euros. The Cave Bar serves good tea and coffee for only 1euro, as well as tapas, snacks and alcoholic "bevvies". It has also started a "killer pool" evening every Thursday, from 8pm. Fed up with the frustrations of your day? Do what we did one Wednesday in mid April, when we introduced some long-standing friends to Katie's outstanding "chefery" at the Ramo del Limon, and once again enjoyed a superbly presented and cooked "two for 22 euros" dinner in pleasant surroundings with easy on the ear background music. Afterwards, all four of us wandered across the terrace into the Lemon Lounge, and listened in on the quiz that Chris was conducting. Another wonderfully enjoyable evening was had by all. Here's a parting question for you. How can you tell if somebody in Mojácar is still "overly English"? The answer is that they say "Por favor" too often and "Gracias" too seldom. In the Spanish mindset a waiter's job is to serve you your drinks - so you don't "beg" to be served. However, in Spanish culture it is extremely poor manners not to acknowledge such service. Cheers, Petter Three old guys are out walking. First one says, 'Windy, isn't it?' Second one says, 'No, it's Thursday!' Third one says, 'So am I. Let's go get a beer.'

“Baza Barry” fished the River Castril and although there was a lot of water coming downstream he managed to find an eddy and tempted a couple of small trout with a spinner. See photo of the River Castril as it comes out of the dam at Castril. “Gary the Jet” and his son Jake went out on their 16 foot seadoo for a spot of fishing and caught a nice red snapper. Jake also caught something big and it was thought to be either an octopus or big ray. Gary lost a big dentex, thought to be 20 to 30lbs because his tackle was under gunned. He has luckily told me and Brian (CC) where they hang out at Villaricos, guess where Brian’s heading next trip out. (I’m not out for a while because of a bad back grrr!) “Captain (Graham) Gnome” fished with three mates and caught 82 fish of 10 different species. It was good to hear the catch included cleaver wrasse, although they are not big they are one of the best eating fish in the sea. I deep fry them whole
with batter and when this is peeled off it takes with it the skin leaving pure white flesh and the bone is similar to a Dover sole so the two fillets just fall off. One of the Villaricos fish farm net pens broke loose last week and was nearly on the beach with its contents of which it was believed to be either swordfish or tuna to 100 kilos. A boat of some sort hooked up a line and was last seen by “Captain (Brian) Cuba” heading back out to sea. That was lucky for them and possibly unlucky for the rest of us eh? “London Bill” had a great day on Sunday when the waves were massive but rolling in slowly. He fished a 3” popper between the waves to tempt some good sea bass to 3lbs, palometes to 4lbs and scad to 2lbs. As was to be expected fish took the lure at the last minute just before the wave crashed. I remember the day clearly but had to work, I had a discussion with

“Ham radio Kevin” about what a good day it was for lure fishing. Kevin should have his beach fishing license by the time you read this and I look forward to his reports each week from now on. “Albox Ken” fished Garruc ha Marina without any joy but confirms the Guardia are now stopping everyone’s fun and fishing there is not allowed. Brian (CC) confirms it too. My grandson "Beachcomber H" got lost in IKEA when we were shopping in Murcia before he left for the UK. He approached a uniformed security guard and said, "I've lost my granddad." STOP PRESS
CLEO IS STILL MISSING Although she has been sighted, the last time in Turre / Los Gallardos area, by the time the owners got there she was nowhere to be found, they do however thank all those who have taken the time to call.
Cleo, a female Galgo Español wearing a red collar, has been missing from the Bédar area since Sunday 17th January. She is a much loved pet and we desperately want her back home. Cleo, is microchipped and neutered (so no use to anyone for breeding purposes). Cleo also has a very noticeable scar running the entire length of her right back leg. IN SEARCHING FOR CLEO THEY HAVE RESCUED FOUR DOGS THAT NEEDED HELP - PAWS HAS TWO OF THEM IN NOW - THIS FOLLOWED PEOPLE PHONING TO SAY THAT THEY HAD SEEN CLEO.
THEY ARE NOT GIVING UP HOPE IF YOU SEE HER, OR EVEN THINK YOU’VE SEEN HER, PLEASE CALL 687 792 655 - 667 252 644 - 600 268 064 A reward is offered for information leading to her safe return
MICHAEL'S REGENCY SNOOKER CLUB AT ARBOLEAS is coming on very well, and will probably open on a "proving" basis during May. That is why the first year's membership will actually last for 13 months. To avoid distraction for the players, the games hall of the club is properly separated from the other areas and only the tables and score boards are lit. It holds seven full size snooker tables as well as three English style pool tables and one American style pool table. Elsewhere there is a well equipped kitchen, of a size larger than that in many full blown restaurants. Elsewhere there is a large bar area with comfortable, plush seating and four television sets, leading on to an entertainment room with a legal capacity for well over a hundred people. Here there is movable seating, a massive screen for showing live, televised sports events and a stage where the Regency Snooker Club will host those fantastic, live shows we used to get in the Basement Cafe. Except for special show nights, when non-members may enter for an appropriate fee, the club is strictly for members and their guests. To control access, in the entrance hall there is a check-in window, where members present a card. The doors are then electronically released to allow entry. There will be a wide choice of beers including Stella and even draught bitter from an old fashioned hand pump. It sounds as though it will be a remarkably "civilised" venue, and it is certainly well furnished.
