From the Editor Welcome to May. At the time of writing, Easter is almost over and the wedding is yet to come but by the time you read this, that too will be over and May Day almost done. Some things you expect to come to an end, others not and this month marks the end of an era. GB Stores have fallen victim to the economic climate and are closing after 10 years. I’m sure you will all join me in wishing them well in whatever it is they do next. Apologies to those who struggled with the themed crossword last month. There were some unfortunate errors which Shea of La Parata pointed out. I think the worst must have been 18 down errm … since when has egg nog been a fruit punch!? This month’s has been vetted so any discrepencies , blame Val!! Lots going on in this issue. Ian’s camera has been positively smoking! I’ve had to put four more pages in to get it all in. There is some very useful information from the Navigator - did you know you

And some time relevant advice from Cool- Air vehicle air conditioning on page 13. I thank all those who sent in their own photos but when you do, can you please send them as a jpg attachment and not within the body of a Word document. I can deal with them but the quality will not be as good. And of course, thanks to the contributors of other items of interest. And finally, thank you to Julian of Hair Design … I’ve been rejulianed, it’s fantastic and I love it!! Until next month, Tracey PS... My mum’s going to kill me when she sees her photo above!!

has sent in this warning … Some people at La Parata have already been conned out of 70€. The false gas controller is back in town. If somebody asks to enter your house to check your gas installation, don’t let them in. Just say that your personal ‘técnico’ is in charge of that job. If you find them inside your premises call the local police or guardia civil. Cabrera Open Gardens Day is being held on Sunday 8th May, 2.30pm - 6.30pm. Lee and Nicki Wakeman are the driving force behind Almeria Angels, this region’s best known nursing agency and 24hr support service, based in Mojácar. Q: What area of the UK are you both from? Nicki … We were both born in London, in fact, just two streets away from one another but a couple of years apart. Later, as children, both our families moved to Peterborough, but strangely, even though we had always lived in the same areas as one another growing up, we had never met. Q: When you left school did you know which career path you wanted to follow? Nicki … It was only when I left school that I decided to train to be a nurse, before that I didn't really know what I wanted to do. I enrolled in nursing college and got accepted to start in 1992. So, while I was waiting, I completed a YTS training programme caring for the mentally and physically disabled in the community. I was 19 when I was accepted and trained for 3 years in Leicester. When I qualified I stayed and worked in Leicester for another year. I then went travelling for 18 months to South America and Malaysia. When I came back I worked for two more years before going travelling again for another 18 months, this time to North America, Australia, Thailand, India, and Hong Kong. When I came back this time I moved to Stevenage, where I worked on an intensive care unit for 8 years. This is where my heart really lies and I do miss it now and again. After that I was promoted to duty manager of Peterborough Hospital, charged with running the whole hospital on a day to day basis, over three sites, totalling around 800 beds. This was my move into management and meant trying to hit targets, which goes a little against the grain, as I believe the healthcare system should be all about the patient and the care provided. Lee … Well not really, when I left school, I took over running the family business. It was quite a steep learning curve at the time but I had obviously been involved in some form or another, even when I was still at school it's just the way a family business works. It taught me a lot about sales and it was this grounding that took me into the estate agency business. I started working for a local company and ended up opening new offices for them around the region, dealing with every aspect of a start up business. After that I purchased a small company in the catering sector and over a period of a couple of years increased its turnover and profitability several fold. It was the sale of that company that gave us the platform to start our new life here in Spain. Q: How did you eventually meet? Nicki … I'm afraid it's not very exciting really. I was planning on going to Australia for a year, to work, when we happened to meet one day in a bar in Peterborough. He was out with his flatmate who had arranged to meet my friend in town. We saw each other across the bar and the rest is history!
If you would like to know more about that Almeria Angels can offer you, website at: www.almeriaangels.com 902 02 64 68 or Email:
Lee … How could she resist!!! I had her at hello!! Q: Nicki, you're obviously well travelled and have visited some fantastic places so why settle in Spain? I suppose I am fairly well travelled, but I must admit although a lot of the countries I've had the good fortune to visit would have been so much easier to nurse in or start a business in, I've always loved Spain and I've always wanted to work here. Lee … I've always liked Spain and spent the whole of 1997 living in Majorca. After that I knew the lifestyle in Spain was the one I wanted. We also knew there was an opportunity for us to build a life here, we understood it would be hard but with Nicki leading the way and the situation we found a lot of the ex-pats in, we knew there was something we could do to help. Q: So did you have a plan when you moved out here? Lee … Did we have a plan? No, not really, it was going to be an adventure! We came out a couple of times to visit different areas and eventually settled in the Almanzora Valley in 2007. We knew that only when we were living out here, would we work hard and make sure we survived, just like a lot of hard working, honest people living out here. Q: So how did Almeria Angels come about? Nicki … Well it started just by talking to people in the village and finding out a little bit more about the way the Spanish health system worked and what was available here to assist people at home or in the hospital. That's when we realised there was a small gap in the market. I thought I might be able to help out a few ex-pats who lacked family support close by in our village but had no idea it would grow into what it has become today. So in 2008 with my nursing experience and Lee's business background we started Almeria Angels. Originally with just myself looking after a few clients but within no time at all we had started to get so much work we had to take on more nursing staff. We now offer bespoke Home or Hospital care packages, depending on the individual’s needs. Our clinical lead nurse will meet with the client and their family to discuss a package designed to meet all their requirements. This may be for as little as 1 hour a week, to full 24 hour care. Our Angels assist with care functions either at the client home or in hospital. We also offer a pre-booked translation service for those who wish to take a fluent Spanish speaking translator to the doctors or hospital. Continued next month ...

his issue we underestimate the costs of premium rate phone numbers, catch up with an old friend, make an appointment and moan about what stuff costs! Just recently I needed to book an ITV for one of my vehicles. I got myself a bit riled in doing so. It all started when I used my “pay as you go” phone and during the phone call, as I approached the end of the booking process, I ran out of credit. As many of our readers are well bred and possibly offended by foul language I am prevented from telling you how I reacted to this imbuggerance. I marched down the street to my local store and bought some new phone-cred (like street-cred but cheaper). I put 5 Euros on my phone and began the whole
process of booking the ITV again. I was even closer to the end of making my appointment with fate when my phone call was interrupted by the nice young robot lady from HITS mobile telling me that my credit had once again expired. Now! I know how cheap Hits mobile calls are, that’s why I’m with them, so how can this be? Well the number for making your ITV appointment is a “902” number, somewhat like the “0898” numbers I’ve heard about in the U.K. This means premium rate, and you don’t even get some floozy asking you what you’re wearing. The crux of all this is that it costs over a fiver to book the appointment. Not anymore! Your Navigator has come to the rescue. Simply sit at your computer and type www.itvcita.com and you will find that you can very easily book your appointment online for free. You don’t even need a credit card to do it. You pay when you get there. You will need the car’s green card and some personal information to book but nothing

more intrusive than your name and postcode. They certainly don’t need to know what you are wearing. It’s not only cheaper to do it this way but also easier and quicker. Once you have selected which ITV centre you want, you simply give a few details about your car and you are then presented with a selection of dates and times to choose from. It really is done rather well and I would not be at all surprised if a booking could be managed without the need to be good at reading Spanish. The way things are around here lately, with random police stops all along the playa, an ITV is something you cannot afford to be without and 5 minutes at www.itvcita.com will keep you safe and out of the loving arms of the law. I’m going to indulge myself here a little by telling you about a website that none of you will ever use but I’m sure a great many of you will want to have a look at. It’s based in New Zealand and is the website of one of Mojacar’s old-school inhabitants. I’m sure many of you will remember South-African Lewis. Lewis got

here about 20 years ago and was a regular at many of Mojacar’s party scenes. Famed for his ravishing blonde hair, his inability to wear shoes and his enormous appetite for Mahou, Lewis was a good friend to so many of us. He left a couple of years ago to live in New Zealand with his mother. Since then he has got himself a woman that seems to be under the impression she can cope with him and he is now engaged to be married. He has started a landscape gardening business which he runs with his bride-tobe. The company is called Lewgen Solutions and the website addy is ... www.lewgen.co.nz Any of you that knew him will enjoy seeing what he is up to. It’s a well laid out site with some awful spelling errors in it and best of all it’s a portal into the new life of an old friend. Good luck Lewis. If you want your website shouted about or know of any interesting sites that would benefit our readers please let me know by dropping me a line at advertisernavigator@msn.com El Navegador.

Ric Polansky received a recognition award at the recent ACEM Ceremony & Dinner where he was referred to as a pioneer in Mojácar’s Real Estate sector. To Ric’s amusement local newspaper Voz de Almeria referred to him as ‘El Historico’, “as if I was a national monument,” said Ric. “Ric came to Mojácar in © bluwater web design September 1969. He was an immigrant, second generation Czechoslovakian. It was a bad time in America and he decided it wouldn’t be a bad time to leave before he got drafted. He arrived with wife Karen, and son Joby, and started working for his brother Paul, who had the unusual idea of selling homes to American ex-pats from the embassy who didn’t want to go back to the States to live. He remembers going to the village and being laughed at, ‘Who would want to buy a home on the beach? There is nothing there!’ And so it started … selling, building and working, and little by little the beach grew. During that time he taught himself photography, got interested in bullfighting and spent months reading special fields of interest. In 1974, when he had nothing to do, he read all the Russian writers and took in 50 corridas de toros (bullfights). Times have always been tough, this has been the worst, but together we can make it all happen again.” Ric “one of the longest surviving dinosaurs around” was honoured to receive his award.

Vehicle Air-Conditioning KEEPING COOL IN YOUR CAR NEED NOT COST YOU A FORTUNE!
I
t’s that time of year again whenyou need to be thinking about a service on your car’s air-con system. Air-conditioning problems tend to be noticed at the start of summer as the weather hots up. In the climate that we live in, the last thing you need is to switch on your air-con and get blasted with warm air. An air-con service by COOL - AIR can prevent this! A lot of people are under the impression that using your aircon uses a lot more petrol or diesel, this, in fact, is minimal. Years ago the compressor on a car was huge and it did affect fuel consumption quite dramatically, now, nearly all compressors are Japanese and are very small so barely affect fuel consumption at all, actually less than 2%, so the benefits you get from using your air-con far outweigh the minimal cost.
Although air-conditioning represents less than 4% of all mechanical failure on a modern car it is the third most expensive to repair after the engine and the gearbox. It is advisable to use your air-con for at least 10 minutes a week and get it serviced every 12 to 18 months. Really it is all about preventative maintenance, if you did not put oil in your car’s engine you would expect it to run dry and seize up. It is just the same with your aircon. The main component is the compressor and this needs to be kept lubricated with a special kind of oil that mixes with the refrigerant. If this is not done then your compressor WILL seize up. If your air-con is regularly serviced the compressor should last the life of the car. The U.K.’s leading warranty repairer Warranty Direct Ltd
have released figures to show how expensive compressors can be. • A new compressor on a Vauxhall Astra would cost 704 pounds for the part and 196 pounds for labour. • A Ford Mondeo compressor would cost 489 pounds and 198 pounds to fit. AND ALL PLUS RE-GAS AND VAT. Warranty Direct LTD manager Gordon Rose said, “We are thinking of introducing a waiver in our warranty policies that insists that you have your air-con serviced or your warranty will be void if your compressor needs replacing.” He also said, “We
spend tens of thousands of pounds every year replacing compressors that in our opinion would not need replacing had the air-con system been serviced on a yearly basis.” COOL - AIR provide a complete service, including regas, diagnostics, repairs and parts all carried out by a fully qualified vehicle air-con engineer. COOL - AIR is a mobile service based in Mojácar and covers all surrounding areas.

An event not to be missed for next year is the Valencia Fallas, a week long event, similar to fiestas, but much, much more. Words fail to describe this event other than spectacular! Eileen & Pete, from Iron Art, Antas went along to Valencia with a trip organised by Club Taurino of Mojácar recently. Effigies are constructed throughout the year, to then be displayed throughout the Valencia streets, up to 350 of them. They are not small statues, but of an amazing height, construction and detail that it is very hard to describe. They are judged and only one is kept to be on display in a museum, the rest are burnt on the final Saturday of the Fallas!! Eileen and Pete were told that 2 years ago the most expensive one cost 900,000 Euros!!! The effigies (statues) are built by the various neighbourhoods of Valencia and there is fierce competition to produce the best. Not only do you have all these to marvel at but also the parade of the ladies, children and men of Valencia in traditional costume, wending their way through the streets to the Plaza de la Virgen with bouquets of flowers. Once here, they hand the flowers over (many very emotional and in tears) to handlers who then take the greenage off and throw them up to men who are then placing these flowers onto a gigantic statue of the Virgin Mary with Jesus - absolutely amazing. Many thanks to Club Taurino and Angel Medina for this tremendous trip and we shall definitely be returning next year.

Crystal healing: The Atlanteans also used crystals to balance their chakras and also to aid in healing. Theories about Atlantis mention the extensive use of crystals by Atlanteans. Crystals varied in patterns or grid - sizes - colour combinations - and tones. Crystals follow harmonic frequencies and could be used with an instrument that looks like a tuning fork. They received power from a variety of sources, including the Sun, the Earth's energy grid system, or from each other. All healing was done in a healing chamber that housed large clear quartz crystals. In addition to using crystals for healing and balancing the chakras, Atlanteans used crystals for the following: Healing, childbirth, crossing over Meditation, awakening, increasing psychic abilities Increasing mental capacity and clarity of thought Science and technology Dematerialization - teleportation – telekinesis Magnetic force fields Libraries - storing records and other knowledge, much like a computer Botany and agriculture Weather Control Communication The original Atlanta crystal was a Clear Quartz. I have a real affinity to this crystal and it is the crystal that I use most in healing. In my next article I will write about which crystals you can use at home to balance your chakras.

In addition to the seven chakras we are most familiar with, in the golden years of Atlantis, there were twelve fully-operational main chakras. Working with twelve chakras has had a dramatic influence on my healing work and of course my own spiritual path. As with all chakras, each of the twelve chakras has a corresponding colour, that changes as the chakra rises in frequency. For those of us who wish to bring back the energy of the twelve chakras it is appropriate to use the colours given below. So what are the new chakras and their new corresponding colours? Let's start from the top and work our way down … 1. Stellar gateway - Gold. The energy of gold represents completion. 2. Soul star - Magenta. The colour magenta indicates an intense spiritual awareness. 3. Casual chakra - White. This is the colour of purity, clarity and perfection. 4. Crown chakra - Violet. The high spiritual frequency of violet indicates devotion to spirit. 5. Third eye chakra - Indigo. This deep blue holds the powers of mental healing and higher psychic development. 6. Throat chakra - Turquoise. This is the colour of expressing what you truly feel; speaking your truth. 7. Heart chakra - Green. The colour of nature which represents balance and harmony. Pink is also appropriate for the heart chakra. 8. Solar plexus chakra - Yellow. This is the mind colour, which enables clarity of thought. 9. Navel chakra - Orange. This colour indicates sociability and friendliness as well as emotional harmony.
10. Sacral chakra - Delicate pink. This is the colour of tenderness which represents the spirit of sexuality. It soothes and calms, encouraging feelings of love and tenderness. 11. Base or root chakra - Red. This gives us the energy to get our survival needs met. 12. Earth star – Black. This colour represents revival and renewal, and holds the potential of what we can be. Black encourages us to be still; to wait with trust in that stillness.

Try the Brazilian Blow Dry for Frizz-Free Hair this Summer time
summer holiday as you won't need to worry about your hair at all, you can go from the pool, to the beach, or to a bar with completely easy, glossy hair and no straightening iron in sight! The Brazilian Blow Dry treatment is a favourite amongst a-list celebrities such as Lindsay Lohan, Nicole Richie and Elizabeth Hurley. You only need to take a look at pictures of them on the red carpet to determine that this treatment truly does work! The Brazilian Blow Dry works by using a keratin-rich product which is applied straight onto your locks. The process takes anywhere from 1 hour 30 minutes to 4 hours depending on the length and type of hair you have. It is then sealed with a hot iron and styled however you like it. The following 3 days after the treatment has been applied, it is crucial that you do not get your hair moist, tie it up, or use any hair grips or head bands, as this will cause the hair to set with kinks or marks in it. After that, you are totally free to do whatever you like and enjoy your new easily manageable, silky, beautiful hair. The very best bit about the therapy is the fact that for the first time ever, girls who suffer from unruly curls or frizz will be able to wash their hair and go! Even when your hair is naturally very curly, you wont need to spend hours straightening and styling it. This really is a godsend for all who encounter a daily styling battle with their unruly locks. And, all this using a therapy that doesn’t damage your hair but can actually improve the condition of it! The keratin in the product is a protein that's naturally found in hair, skin and nails and this product boosts the reduced levels caused by other traditional straightening or smoothing techniques.

Top 5 Health Benefits of a Daily Walk I have just enjoyed a couple of weeks R & R, and feel much more relaxed, revitalized and rejuvenated. However the size of my backside has certainly expanded. Summer weather is nigh and it is time to expose my less but toned tummy and I have no intention of buying a new bikini. Therefore I need to get moving again, I love my daily swims and do this six months of the year, which keeps me toned up. However if I want to burn off extra calories, walking, for me, is the answer. I have had numerous emails recently, from those that have stopped smoking and a large pat on the back for you all. That is a huge step in improving your health. However some of you are concerned that you have put on weight. This is common on giving up smoking for a couple of reasons. One is that you have replaced your habit with food. And the other is that your body is now not having to work so hard to take in oxygen so your metabolism will have slowed down. A daily walk will help your body to achieve homeostasis and your weight will sort it self out. Here are some other benefits of a daily walk. If exercise is not your thing and you need a little extra motivation to get active, consider the following five health benefits of a daily walk or other exercise: Strengthens and protects your heart and lungs. Exercise provides numerous benefits to the heart. It lowers levels of cholesterol, and also reduces high blood pressure. Regular workouts also help build your lung capacity, this helps you feel a higher level of energy.

Promotes weight loss. Exercise burns calories. Even people who are not overweight will better maintain their healthy weight level even as they age and their metabolism begins to slow. Maintaining a healthy body weight is crucial to reducing the risk of many illnesses and conditions, including heart disease and diabetes. In addition, a slimmer body frame reduces the pressure on bones and joints and reduces the risk of osteoarthritis. Improves mood and reduces stress. Improves self esteem. Exercise also boosts your emotional health in other ways. For example, a person who becomes fit is likely to have a stronger self-image. Therefore, it is important to view exercise as an ongoing, longterm investment in better health. I love my daily walks and know even though it is mainly to reduce the size of my derriere it will also improve my quality of life. Increases muscular strength and joint flexibility. Walking builds and strengthens bones. This can help ward off osteoporosis, a thinning of the bones that occurs in many women after menopause and in some men as they age. Weight-bearing such as walking, running or jogging; skiing; weight-lifting; and dancing, help to build bone mass.

Albox Branch of the Royal British Legion enjoyed their monthly meeting at La Parilla Restaurant in Albox main square. The meeting was well attended with numerous members and joining members enjoying the usual stalls for the Poppy Fund, English books and cakes for sale. They also enjoyed the opportunity to buy tickets for upcoming events such as the Treasure Hunt on the 15th May (see details below) and the trip to Barcelona and Catalonia for 5 days starting on the 2nd October. The crowd were treated to a talk by Jim Baulf on his experiences in postwar Japan, especially Hiroshima and Mt. Fuji. They were reduced to tears of laughter by the lack of coordination between Jim and Chris Pearce who was operating the projector, resulting in slides being out of sync with the speaker’s topic, but it was all light-hearted fun. Sandra Evans took the microphone to provide details of the Treasure Hunt. It takes place on the 15th May starting in the car park next to La Parrilla at 2 pm. Tickets are available

Gardening club go undercover to learn secrets After years of living in the land of “plastico” the members of the Almanzora Valley Gardening Club eventually got to investigate the methods used for intense salad cultivation, on a fascinating visit to the Clisol greenhouses near El Ejido. Following on from her parents, Lola, our guide, had worked in the farming community since childhood, and has been at the forefront of modernising the industry over the years. Her passion shone through as she explained how insects and bumble bees are used in lieu of chemicals, how plants are grown in coir and rock wool, how water is recycled and how their weather station is linked to a computer that operates irrigation, shade and air flow. Afterwards we were able to taste many of their products which include; Melon, Peppers, Aubergine, Courgette, Cucumber and Tomatoes. The Almanzora Valley Gardening Club meet on the first Friday of every month (with the exception of January). Starting at 10:30 am in the Pedro Gilabert Museum, Arboleas.

www.advertisermojacar.com 28 members of the Albox Branch of The Royal British Legion (pictured right) joined the 90th Anniversary celebrations at the Auditorio de la Deputacion de Alicante on Saturday 2nd April for the evening performance. The programme was a fantastic celebration of the work of the Royal British Legion over the past 90 years. The programme was a blend of Spanish and British introductions and performances including massed voice choirs, brass bands and pipes and drums. Vocal performances were also provided by The All Angels girl group and Ruth Lorenzo.
The audience was honoured by the presence of members of the Chelsea Pensioners and existing servicemen who had recently returned from Afghanistan. These marched in to rapturous applause. Most of the Branches from Northern Spain were represented by their Standard Bearers who marched in displaying their Standards. (pictured far left is Pete of Iron Art, Antas, Standard Bearer for the Albox branch) The performance ended with a Drumhead Service led by Bishop David Hamid Suffragan, Bishop in the Diocese in Europe. The entire programme was enjoyed by all those that attended. The Group remained in Alicante overnight and enjoyed a stop off in Mazarron on the return journey.
The Luvvies next performance is the well known comedy ‘California Suite’. Playwright Neil Simon's bittersweet comedy follows four separate stories of guests who've just checked into the swanky Beverly Hills Hotel over the weekend of the Academy Awards gala. The four-part story line runs the gamut from touching introspection to outright slapstick. The play follows the format he used so successfully in his earlier Plaza Suite, set in New York – and also used for a third time in his later London Suite (performed by the Luvvies three years ago). Neil Simon is rightly celebrated for a huge string of comedy hits, many turned into films with top stars – and winning many awards for both the films and plays.
Walkers & Talkers Charity Walk The Grapevine of Piedra Amarilla Walkers & Talkers group held a charity walk on the 10th April in aid of MACS (Mojacar Area Cancer Support). A total of 36 humans and 5 dogs paid to walk a circular route of about 8 km in La Hoya, covering roads, tracks, ramblas and even a small stream. The weather was beautiful and the group enjoyed a brief pit-stop at Bar Los Pedreros before completing the walk and returning to The Grapevine. A raffle was held in The Grapevine in aid of the charity with a large number of prizes donated for the event. There were also cakes for sale made by Sue Taylor and Diane Gill. Everyone enjoyed the welcome liquid refreshments available. The whole event was well organised by Sue Taylor and Michael Gill who both gave a considerable amount of their time in planning and executing the day’s events. A huge thank you goes to everyone who took part and to Issy and Helen for opening The Grapevine on their day off. A total of 406.55€ was raised for the charity.
The Luvvies have been in existence for six years, based in the Albox area, and have contributed many successful productions to the cultural life of the area. Pet Stop
PERIODONTAL DISEASE is the most common disease seen in small animals and has very serious consequences. If the signs are not recognised it can lead to all the teeth being infected and other serious conditions can arise such as blocked arteries, heart disease and kidney problems which can shorten your pet’s life but will most certainly cause a great deal of pain and suffering. Periodontal disease can start quite early on, a high percentage of dogs and cats around the age of 2 years show some signs. It starts with food remaining on the teeth which forms plaque, this continuously builds up and forms calculus above the gum line, this is very painful and progressive. Warning signs are bad breath, loose teeth, inflammation of the gums, chattering, drooling, lack of appetite and bleeding gums. Your vet can of course carry out a dental exam, then under anaesthetic, clean the teeth and remove any that cannot be saved. This will not be a cure, it will only be a base to work on. The only sure way is to clean the teeth yourselves at least 3 times a week, it need only take 30 seconds each time. Always use a special toothpaste with a toothbrush which is best suited to the size of your pet. (Never use human toothpaste as it
PAGE 26
contains soap which is why it foams, nor baking soda). Anaesthetics become more dangerous as pets get older which is why cleaning the teeth yourselves is a much safer option. A diet which is not based just on canned or soft foods will be a start, then there are special treats for healthy teeth and treats such as crunchy dog biscuits. 'Greenies' come in different sizes and there are specials for cats as well. An example of good strong toys are the "Kong" toys, they were established in 1976 and are famous for their durability, they cost a bit more than the average toy but last so much longer, especially if you have a strong jawed pet, they have a dental toy for dogs and a special for cats too. ALWAYS MAKE SURE ANY TOY YOU BUY IS TOO BIG FOR THE DOG TO SWALLOW. The younger a pet is when you start cleaning the teeth the easier it is going to be but it is never to late to get into the habit. There are rubber brushes which fit over your finger and wipes and washes if brushing it definitely a no go. A newish product called "PetzLife" is widely advertised in the professional weekly dog papers in the UK claiming to "Eliminate Plaque and Tartar the Natural Way - Benefits for dogs and cats - No brushing required, very affordable, quickly reduces bacteria that can cause bad breath and gum disease.” It comes in 4oz bottles either as a gel with wild salmon oil or peppermint flavour or a spray also flavoured with peppermint. Web site www.petzlife.co.uk, Email jay@petlife.co.uk or telephone 00 44 (0)208 4242701.
P.S. IN LAST MONTH’S ISSUE - THE PREVENTION OF TICKS BY THE USE OF THE SCALIBOR COLLAR - I said this collar was not effective against ticks. This statement has been challenged. I was told last year by a local vet the collar was no longer a preventative for ticks and found substantiating comments on a web site. This year the same vet says its efficacy depends on the dog. In an effort to obtain the actual truth I contacted "Intervet" and received the following advices from their technical manager in Spain - Scalibor is still indicated for the treatment and prevention of tick infestation and is very effective and useful. In many cases, especially in the countryside, where there are many of these insects in the environment it is very hard to get 100% protection. The effectiveness of Scalibor is very high but as with some other forms of prevention, it is possible for some ticks to stay on the animal. They go on to say - what is really important is that the tick dies on contact with the active ingredient in the collar and that many vets are recommending the use of a compatible anti-tick product to use along with the Scalibor collar. Intervet point out that, "Deltamethrin is highly toxic to cats," though it is no problem if cats are living with collared dogs as the active principle of the collar is distributed only in the dog's skin and not in the environment. Apparently according to the technical manager the “Sand” fly is so called because of its colour being similar to sand not because of where it lives. Hope that clears everything up. NOTE - the above is for advice only and is not intended to replace the expert diagnosis and specialist treatment of your veterinarian whose advice is always the best.

The Entertainer Online is a locally written website with news, comment, opinion and essays about life here and is updated daily. The site also has local weather and the acid humour of Rambeau’s blog, together with three hundred useful links about Spain. For people who live here. www.theentertaineronline.com The news according to The Entertainer Online - Most of the following is true!
Creamfields Moves On The Creamfields concerts - lots of bands (that no one over 25 has heard of) and lots of sand, has moved from Villaricos to El Ejido... and now onwards and, ah, upwards to Jerez de la Frontera. 13th and 14th August with The Prodigy (who? Ed.) On a happier note (?), the Columbian sensation Shakira will offer a concert in Almería on June 1st. Meanwhile, for those who like their music a bit more... tuneful... there's always Radio Costa on 105.6FM. No talk, no squawk. Zapatero 'Will Not be a Candidate in 2012' President Rodriguez Zapatero has thrown in the towel - finally - and announced that he will not seek re-election in the 2012 national elections, where, after eight years of rampant and inept Patacerísmo, the PSOE is sure to take a massive and most welcome bath. Zapatero made the much anticipated announcement today and hopes, he said , that a new candidate will be found by September 1st. The leading choices are currently Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba (he of the residence permits and green A4 papers) and Carmen Chacón, the radical Minister of Defense. The Government has nevertheless ruled out early elections, probably because the PP leads by a massive 16 points. Meanwhile, an 'anti-sistema' group of anarchists have switched all the bus stop adverts in Madrid to read 'Everything is Fine. Keep Shopping'. How to Destroy a Palm Tree There is a flyer from the Town Hall that deals with the Picudo Rojo, the palm-tree weevil which is killing our palm trees. The large white grubs and thumb-sized red beetles will not only kill a palm tree, apparently in days, but will then launch an attack on other palms, until none are left in the municipality. This could occur, according to biologists, as early as by the end of this year. The Town Hall has printed up the leaflet which sets out the various prices for having your palms treated or removed. It falls short of an order to property owners to clear their land of infected trees (which is why we will no doubt have no palms at all by Christmas), but asks owners to contact Urbaser on 950 460 206 who will remove and pulp your easy to access trees at the special price of 413€ a tree, IVA included; harder to reach trees to cost a bit more. Wildlife watcher Phil didn’t have to search too far for this lizard ... “This critter was sunning itself on our pool-side. It’s big, about 18”-20”, and quite timid taking refuge in a hole in the flowerbed if we approached too closely. It’s a male having many blue spots on its side, the female having only a few. It's Timon lepidus, a species of wall lizard known as the Ocellated Lizard and this guy is of the sub-species “nevadensis” & unique to South-Eastern Spain. They eat mainly insects but are known to eat small mammals, frogs, reptiles and fruit.” Source; Wikipedia PAGE 28

www.osteria-mojacar.com product which may extend the life of the palm tree, but we await some more useful solution - a chemical or biological trap. Perhaps the next government will be more concerned. The Best Bang Bang, I Shot You Down Mexican Food Spain is a major arms manufacturer South of the and, according to Defensa.com, Border ! now sells arms worth a whopping South four million euros a day making the American Cocktails country one of the ten largest arms & Mexican Beers exporters in the world. Sales have Open Every Day risen steeply since Zapatero came except Mondays to power in 2004, in contradiction to 950 478 841 Z-3 his ideology of peace and underMojacar Playa, Tito's Complex standing. In 2008, Spain sold Gaddafi 1,500 million Euros worth of equipment and has also sold to Iran 'technology of double uses' (so called peaceful equipment that can be used for military ends, including here, nuclear equipment). China, according to a map on the Defensa.com website, is Spain's biggest customer.
Property Rulz OK If there is one thing we all agree, it is that property sales need to pick up. However, with Spain's reputation for honesty and fairness in property rules still in the crapper, as many tens of thousands of Europeans will tell you, there needs to be some major overhaul of the system before sales start to rise again. The AUAN is now back from Brussels, where they presented a paper on Thursday against the treatment of foreign property owners in Spain and the 'illegal houses' that those property owners found that they were the proprietor of once the final cheque cleared. Meanwhile, the Secretary for Housing for the Junta de Andalucía, Josefina Cruz, blathers on about illegal aliens. So José Blanco, a minister in Zapatero's govt, is off to London to try and shift some of the banking sector's massive stock in dwellings (mostly city apartments, which the Brits, retired or not, have no wish to acquire). Blanco says his Road Show intends to ‘promote the strength of our economy and judicial security’ ('Typically Spanish'). Party Lists - Lots of Brits Party lists from Almería are published in the Boletín Oficial Provincial. In Mojácar, the PP has a token Brit, one Emily Clark, at Nº 9, the PSOE has none, the UM has Lucas Mayo at Nº6, MPM has Kay McGrath at Nº 5. Astrid the Vet is Nº 5 on the Izquierda Unida. Rather more significant, The PA has Claire Robinson at Nº 2. Albert Schroter heads the UPyD and there are several other 'Europeans' on the list; Mojácar Positiva se Mueve leads with Jessica Simpson and various other 'Brits' and our own Ciudadanos Europeos has 'Europeans' at Nºs 2, 3 and 5 (Lenox Napier, Jana Geyer and Audrey Hathaway) plus some further down. Olé Francia! The French Ministry of Culture has recognised bull-fighting (the unfortunate translation of 'corrida de toros') as a cultural institution. Oddly, Spain has yet to do so, with some parts of the country, notably Catalonia, having banned the spectacle. This sensible and moral undertaking of the French Culture Ministry, given at a bullfight at the Feria de Arles, may, however, be seen to be tossing le petit chat amongst les pigeons internationally.

BLA CK SW AN BLACK SWAN Nina (Natalie Portman) is a ballerina in a New York City ballet company whose life, like all those in her profession, is completely consumed with dance. She lives with her obsessive former ballerina mother Erica (Barbara Hershey) who exerts a suffocating control over her. When artistic director Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassel) decides to replace prima ballerina Beth Macintyre (Winona Ryder) for the opening production of their new season, Swan Lake, Nina is first choice. But Nina has competition: a new dancer, Lilly (Mila Kunis), who impresses Leroy as well. Swan Lake requires a dancer that plays both the White Swan with innocence and grace, and the Black Swan, who represents guile and sensuality. Nina fits the White Swan role perfectly but Lilly is the personification of the Black Swan. As the two young dancers expand their rivalry into a twisted friendship, Nina begins to get more in touch with her dark side – a recklessness that threatens to destroy her.

PEPE: Originally a PAWS pup, Pepe had a home but was later abandoned by his owner and was left to wander the streets. He is a super nice dog and is very friendly to people and dogs alike. ODIN is a happy and friendly dog and he loves to come and cuddle with you. He enjoys the company of his kennelmates and is very playful with them. He just loves to run and go for walks and we always let him have a good run in the large play area before taking him for a walk to let him burn off steam. He’s just born to run! Odin enjoys life and loves to explore his surroundings by sniffing and checking everything out. It has been observed that he chased a cat when he saw one. Odin is a super friendly guy.

ISIS is good with other dogs though she is sensitive and can easily be upset. She would do best in a quiet and relaxed environment. She is a very nice dog, generally a quiet type, though we have noticed that she had been behaving with some stress responses when some of the dogs had been moved around (barking, kennel jumping/hanging). Now that she is in a quiet kennel area she is calm again. She likes to go out for walks. She is a nice dog and easy to handle. It would be nice to get her homed.
ROLY came into our care last year with his 3 siblings, they were frightened kits at the time, but have grown in both size and confidence. A placid boy, Roly has the temperament of an older cat, preferring to sit quietly and enjoy strokes. Neutered, fully vaccinated and micro-chipped. For further information, please contact Diane on 950 617 643.

SPUD - is a bearded collie, D.O.B: 01.11.2007. He is fully vaccinated and neutered, is a loveable character, gets on well with other dogs and is very friendly with people. Would make an excellent family pet.
For more details contact The Dog House Foundation.
SPENCER: Of all the dogs in the shelter, Spencer is one of the most people friendly. He adores human company. However, this friendliness does not always extend to other dogs so he is best homed as an only dog. Though he is an older dog, Spencer loves to play, especially with toys, and of course would love you to play with him, too.

PAWS still under threat but more optimistic about sur vival. PAWS, the beleaguered animal rescue charity, looks set to continue – at least for the time being. It had announced mid-March that it would have to close for lack of money, but reversed the decision four weeks later. A ‘Save PAWS’ campaign, started in the immediate wake of the announcement, raised €10,000 in donations and pledges. It revealed a real concern among the population in Mojacar and surrounding area for an organisation that is very well-known but often taken for granted. But a statement announcing the change of heart warned that PAWS is definitely not out of the woods yet. “We are spending at least €7,000 a month to look after all the animals we still have in our care,” said treasurer Janet Franklin. “We urgently need to find some continuing source of funds to replace the major donor we lost earlier this year” said Mrs. Franklin. The local fund-raising push is not over yet. At least a dozen more events are in the pipeline between now and World Animal Awareness Day in October – and more may well be added to the list. A multiple Sky Dive (organised by Sol Times), a repeat of Spectrum FM’s highly successful Gig-a-Crawl and a concert featuring possibly a major UK headline act, are just three which catch the eye. Above all, PAWS wants more people to actually join the society. “We clearly have many hundreds of strong supporters in the area,” said PAWS spokesman Mike Dornan, “yet our membership remains relatively small. If we can enlarge our declared support base it will give us more clout in approaching charitable trusts and local town halls to get support from them.” But for the foreseeable future emergency restrictions will remain in place, with no new animals taken into the rescue shelter. You can follow PAWS progress, and see a full list of the various events taking place at www.paws-patas.org
www.advertisermojacar.com For a while the weather was more than a little touch and go but the sun finally shone at Mesa Bar & Grill as it hosted a charity event for 100 people. Mesa reduced the bar prices on the day for the charity. Organised by Matt Delaney in aid of the Haven's Hospice in Essex for children suffering with cancer, the generosity of the attending friends and supporters from Los Gallardos enabled Matt to raise around 800d from the event’s ticket receipts, raffles and bingo. Matt is a well known charity event organiser in the area and has been fundraising in the UK and Spain for 30 years. Hospices in England are run entirely on funds raised by charities without support from the government.

www.advertisermojacar.com STAN DEAN 1917-2011 Stan Dean was born in October 1917 at St Pancras, London. He was fifth in a family of seven children and led a varied and active life. He joined the army in 1940 and in 1941 was sent to Scotland for training, here he met and married Lena in the same year. After serving in North Africa and Sicily he was awarded the DCM for gallantry and became a Company Sergeant Major. He then joined the Parachute Regiment and was promoted to Lieutenant. Stan was captured at the Battle of Arnhem in 1944 and became a prisoner of war. In 1946 he was demobbed and returned to civilian life as a postmaster until he retired at the age of 57. During this time he was a member of the Conservative Party and a local councillor for 42 years; he was also a Justice of the Peace. His wife died in 1996. Stan then came to Spain for a holiday and enjoyed it so much he decided to move here permanently. He was a member of Cabrera Lawn Bowling Club where he was a familiar figure on the bowling greens. He was passionate about his bowling and an assertive character when playing, he continued playing until about 18 months before he died. Stan passed away in his sleep in the early hours of Sunday 20th March. The funeral service took place at Turre Catholic Church on Wednesday 23rd March.
Aysha, 5 year old grand daughter of local resident Les Hayes, has cerebral palsy; affected in both her arm and her leg on her left side. Aysha had a specialised pram that she would use on a daily basis to help her get about however, as she got older decided she would feel more comfortable using a wheelchair, as this is what big girls use. Unfortunately Aysha’s health professionals said that as the pram was still suitable she would have to wait. Plus there wasn’t enough money in the budget to provide a chair. Naturally Aysha’s family were concerned that this might make her feel upset about her disability. This is when the people of Mojácar stepped in to do all they could to raise the money to pay for a wheelchair. Aysha and her family cannot thank everybody enough for all their generosity however there are a few people who made this happen. First of all, Lisa Harris, who's idea it was to raise the money and did many things to raise it including not drinking alcohol for months to raise sponsors. DJ Ian for offering his services for free on the charity night that was held in honour of Aysha, Richard and Lynn of The Loft and of course a huge thank you to everyone who donated any money. Aysha now has her wheelchair she loves it and even got to pick the colour, she chose purple. There was an amount of money left over and this was donated to the centre where Aysha goes on a weekly basis with other children with cerebral palsy for therapy sessions which they offer for free despite not receiving any government funding. Aysha is looking forward to coming over to Mojácar to thank people face to face.

MAY Birth Flower: The May Birth Flower is the Lily
of the Valley, a low-growing perennial plant having usually two large oblong lanceolate leaves and small fragrant nodding bell-shaped white flowers. Its name is derived from the Latin word maius meaning 'May', and anthemon meaning 'flower' referring to the flowering time of these plants. Meaning: Sweetness and Humility. Hidden message: favoured during the Victorian era was "You've Made My Life Complete".
Birthstone: The word Emerald is derived from
the Greek word "Smaragdos" which means "green stone". By weight the emerald is the most valuable gemstone in the world. Emeralds come in a wide range of natural colours and shades of green. Colour is mainly caused by the gemstones’ selective absorption of certain wavelengths of light called the body colour. In gemstones, colour consists of three components: Hue - the first impression of the colour; Tone - the lightness or darkness of colour ranging from light to medium to dark; Saturation - the intensity of a gemstone's colour which is measured from dull to strong to vivid. Emeralds are graded according to colour, clarity and shape. The grades are usually referred to as Commercial, Good, Fine, and Extra Fine. Each grade represents a range of qualities. The Emerald is a member of the Beryl (beryllium aluminium silicate) family. Its crystal structure, hexagonal. Elements of chromium in the crystal produce the colour, whilst inclusions in the stone create what is called the jardin, or garden, of the emerald. The Emerald is found in Colombia, Brazil, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

By The Other Half In the winter I happily slouch on the sofa. In the summer I happily plonk myself on the patio. In between seasons I will mix and match, according to current weather conditions. At any time of year I will sit placidly and allow the Higher Authority to conduct her life around me. She bustles about, chivvying the house into order, daring the dust to settle, and rendering homeless no end of unfortunate insects, whose antecedents had doubtless lived in the space now occupied by our house for more generations than I can count. But Spring seems to bring on a kind of frenzy of cleanliness. She seems to feel the need to uproot every piece of furniture, and ‘get underneath it’ with the vacuum cleaner, to mop every inch of floor, even the bits which you can’t see because they are under the furniture, and burden the washing machine with every stitch of fabric in the entire house, even the bath mats. Having cleaned everything to within an inch of its life, she then puts it all back somewhere else. Nothing goes back exactly where it was. Take the sofa, for instance. There are only so many places that a sofa will fit in the average living room, and our sofa has been in all of them. Currently it is about two foot to the right of where it has been for the last year. This means that, if I want to sit immediately in front of the telly, I will have to sit on the opposite side of the sofa. This state of affairs is unsatisfactory, not to say unsettling. It means that my leaning elbow is unsupported while my non-leaning elbow is restricted by the arm of the sofa. My drink is on the wrong side, and I have to use my wrong hand to lift it. And worst of all, the remote is not in its usual place, it is, yes, on the wrong side. I was plaintively enumerating these problems when the Higher Authority enquired sweetly whether I would like the sofa put back in its original place. Ah! I thought, she feels my pain, she cares! I was touched, and immediately volunteered to push it back into situ while enquiring why she had moved it in the first place. ‘I moved it so that nobody could see the big black mark on the wall where you squashed that spider.’ She replied. ‘Of course, if it goes back, then the wall will need painting, and you can’t paint only one wall, so the whole room will need doing.’ So here’s the deal – I sit on the wrong side of the sofa, or I paint the living room. I’d better go and put on my overalls…….. PAGE 35

‘Baza Barry’ fished the River Segura in Murcia Town, where he caught some good carp to 12lbs. He tells me that although he hasn’t fished his local lake much (Baza’s Lake Negratin) there are some big fish showing and he will start to concentrate more of his time there later this month. Water levels are perfect he says and he expects a successful spawning season from the lake’s fish. Last week’s Rods and Reels match venue was changed from Blanca to the River Segura, Eden canal stretch. Although the river was at its full level and flowing slightly faster than normal, it fished well. Nearly every angler on the day lost several big fish, and some a lot more than a couple. That is the joys of fishing, even more so when you fish this stretch of river which has a lot of new reed growth close to the banks. Also, considering that there was a match on this stretch the day before, the river did produce, in comparison to several weeks ago
when anglers were struggling for a bite. 1st - Dave (Yours Truly) Hoare fishing the pole using corn with 24.1/2lbs. 2 - Doug (Welsh Goldminer) Hornblow fishing the pole using pellet with 18.1/2lbs. 3rd - Mick (The Arsenal) Hill fishing the pole using pellet and corn with 15lbs. The Abbey Angling match this week was at the Eden Stretch of the River Segura. The river has now coloured up with the sun causing the algae growth, and the fish starting to feed on the bottom. 1st - Stan (The Man) Roberts with 41lbs on the pole with corn and pellet. 2nd - Lenny (Ex Cultural Attache) Bolton with 19lbs on the pole with corn and paste. 3rd - Paul (The Fryer) Baxter with 17.1/2lbs on the pole with paste and pellet. The fishing is starting to improve with the warmer weather, and this week there were no dry nets. ‘London Bill’ was fishing alongside Spanish fishermen down on the Macenas southern rocks where he says they were all catching lots of small sea bass and palometes. ‘Spanish Pete’ went out with his son in law ‘Kote’ and they suffered the big waves to catch just a few fish. A 1lb red snapper, small

weavers, combers, pandoras and pickerel. The British Capitanos haven’t been out this week but I heard some Spanish boats have been catching loads of little cleaver wrasse which for me is one of the best eating fish in the sea. If fresh I don’t even bother to gut them and fry them in a beer batter. As you pick off the batter the skin comes with it leaving a beautiful white fleshed fish with a similar bone structure to a Dover sole except the wrasse has two good eating sides to it. Anglers Together was formed to introduce and encourage anglers of all abilities to meet up and get together to fish, either sea or freshwater. The next meeting will be held at The New Royal Bar and Restaurant at El Alamillo, on Saturday 14th of May at 12 o’clock, opposite the sea-front between Isla Plana and the Port. For further details ring Alan Roscoe 968 570 876 or email: anglerstogether@gonuts4free.com There will be a fishing meeting in the Beachcomber on 10th May, 7pm til 9pm where like minded people meet for a chat about guess what? Yep, fishing! I wonder if the fly tying boys will turn up to give us some tips and demonstrations. Checkout Mojacar’s weather and sea conditions here on the Beachcomber’s webcam. You must have downloaded the latest version from www.java.com to see it. www.almeriafreeads.com/webcam For further information on any of the above or to find out about beach, boat or coarse fishing licenses, see John at the

www.advertisermojacar.com Local Elections in Mojácar: 22nd May 2011
POSTAL VOTES … Q: I am unavoidably absent on Voting Day so I will have to be a postal voter. What do I do? A: This is a complex process so please do try to be in Mojácar to vote on May 22nd in person if at all possible. If you know you cannot attend in person, you will need to vote by post. The forms for postal voting are now available at the Post Offices (Voto por Correo - Solicitud de Certificacion). You do not need ID at this stage although it is always wise to take some! You can collect more than one at a time. However, once completed, they will have to be returned individually, in person, to the Post Office, with ID (NIE or Passport or Certificate of Residence - whichever you ticked on your form ). You will also need some form of ID with your photo on it, like your Passport or Spanish Driving License. You may want to use your Passport as ID anyway. They will need your signature to match to the original one on the form. The Post Office will post the form on for you in an envelope which they provide. Once the form is submitted, you will not be able to vote in person in the 2011 Local Elections. This is only the start of the process. You will receive by certified post (in your apartado, if you have one) the voting papers for all the parties standing in the election with the different candidates listed, an instruction sheet, the electoral envelopes, a certificate of inscription and an envelope with the address of the polling station sheet. This will be between May 2nd- 12th. Again, you will need to sign a notice of receipt and provide proof of identity at the post office. Noone else can collect the papers on your behalf - you must do this in person. This process has to be completed no later than 10 days before Voting Day on May 22nd: in other words, before 12th May. When you have collected the papers, you will then have to select the one voting slip of the party of your choice which must not be written on. You must put this into the voting envelope which must be sealed. This envelope, together with the certificate, must be placed in the envelope addressed to the polling station and sent by registered post (no stamps needed) before May 18th (but it would be foolish to leave it this late, given the vagaries of the Spanish postal system). Again, you will need to provide proof of identity This all takes time (this is Spain, after all!) so it is vital you get your postal voting application form(s) right now to avoid missing the deadline.

Q: What happens if someone is too sick or disabled to be able to vote in person? A: The postal voting form has a section on the second half of the page which covers those who cannot vote in such circumstances. In this situation, sick or disabled persons can nominate someone else as a representative to vote on their behalf. The sick or disabled person needs to have a medical certificate, and the application has to be authorised by a Notary or Consul. A representative has to be named who will need to fill in and sign the form in order to vote on his/her behalf. Travel by a notary to the home of a sick or disabled person is free of charge. Individual forms must be filled out if there is more than one sick or disabled person involved. A representative can only act for one voter. Braille documentation is available. For those of you who will be away on May 22nd, this is the only alternative to physically voting - however, as can be seen, you will need to be in Spain to send your voto por correos.
