H
ello all. I have been told off by many for not putting my letter in last month so I’m back, albeit in a smaller and different place due to my having had to donate my space once again. I hope you find this month’s issue full of interesting matter. My favourite time of year is looming, CHRISTMAS, and at the time of writing, according to my Santa Countdown Clock, it is exactly 63 sleeps, 4 hours, 17 minutes and 32 seconds. For those of you who send in the dates of forthcoming events please note that there will be no January issue so any ‘goings on’ during the month of January need to be sent in by the 19th of November, at the very latest, to
be included in the December issue. And to my ‘Advertisees’, I’ll be coming round for your Christmas messages so get your thinking caps on. Finally in the remaining bit of space left … thanks to the contributors of photos, articles, dos and news. Special thanks to Ian and Petter for yet again capturing so many of the events featured. Until next month ... Tracey PAGE 3

The latest of which ... InternetCallshop in Los Gallardos now has its Christmas stock available. From individual Christmas cards for family and friends to packs of cards which range from special hand-made ones to bumper value boxes. There’s also Christmas wrap and tags and a variety of Christmas crackers for the special day. Also available, a selection of 2011 diaries in A5, slim and pocket sizes and calendars for the New Year. Tel: 950 398 896 for info or directions. Iron Art, El Real, Antas have just had in some new greeting cards and modern design rugs from the UK. They have some good ideas for Christmas presents with their range of candles, flowers, windchimes, novelty plant holders and ornaments. It’s actually a bit of an Aladdin’s Cave – I can spend quite a lot of time in there and money! Rumour has it that the unit behind Iron Art and next to Caldera Spas is going to be a designer clothes unit. Not sure how true that is but if it is, you read it here first! Regular quiz goers will never believe this, but I saw it with my own eyes. Roger's crack team of experts are used to getting prizes, but their recent prize in the Lemon Lounge was for being last!
Do you ever have a problem with a PC running windows? If you don't really know your way around them then you find yourself at the mercy of those who do. One such "whiz" is the above mentioned Mark, whom I have never known to be greedy or to try to talk you into something you don't need. He's a bit difficult to track down unless you play pool or have his phone number, so here is the latter option: 659 363 223.
Bea will be occupying part of her time playing for a new team in the local pool league, Sinaloa Fanny. The team comprises six women and two blokes, and their major objective is to enjoy the winter Thursday nights. Sinaloa thoroughly lost their second match of the season, being beaten by Bar Valery 4 points to none. On the way home the girls stopped off at Pachamama, who had lost 3-1 to Esencial, to commiserate with them and cheer everyone up. When I came across them, still there into the wee small hours, they were having a whale of a time! Also having a whale of a time were the Bar Esencial players celebrating their result against Pachamama, with their "camp followers" - especially Russian Irene. I don't know what time the free and easy festivities ended, but it was certainly after 2.30 am! The team is being coached by Mark and I reckon

Petter has been pitter pattering about. Here are his petty pennings …
Bea tells me that El Patio beach bar will close for this season, the day after Hallowe'en or just as this issue appears on the streets. It will also coincide with the clocks being put back. Bea also told me that next year Easter occurs quite late, so she will be re-opening El Patio a few weeks before Easter, probably to coincide with the clocks going forward! I will miss the really good "medio tostado con tomate y aceite" that is on offer at breakfast time.

If you live anywhere near the Cueva del Lobo area (Lemon, Gaviota, Arias riding school, etc.) and you sometimes hear loud bangs, it is because Patxi, an avid fan of Real Madrid, likes to fire off an explosive rocket each time they score a goal, and a few more for luck if his favourite team wins!

From the 28th October Tony Randall, an addicted golfer and regular visitor, will be visiting Mojácar with his wife, Christine, for four weeks. Friends will almost certainly be able to catch them at Mi Taberna in the evenings. Christine tells me, via Skype, that she has visited Rose - a slim lady who normally lives in Garrucha - and that Rose is having a scan performed on the first of November. We wish her a happy outcome. Major Tom tells me that the Bald Eagle has another medical check-up scheduled for late November. He will remain in UK until then, and quite possibly will not return to Mojácar until after Christmas. I found Gb's have some "specially selected" teas, including English breakfast, which is composed mainly of tea from Kenya blended with tea from Malawi. I find it to be a good, strong tea - and I should know! They also have some poisonous tasting tea labelled "Earl Grey". Ciao, Petter PAGE

"Brian Dee was on hand this year to entertain, and entertain he did, much to the appreciation and delight of the members and their guests at the latest ROYAL BRITISH LEGION ANNUAL POPPY DINNER DANCE. The Mojácar Branch of the Legion held this year’s dinner dance at the Hotel Continental who provided all those present with a spendid dinner. Everyone present, the gentlemen in their DJs and the ladies in their lovely gowns danced the night away before retiring for the night. The tombola provided much light hearted banter. The Committee were as grateful as ever to those very generous sponsors and those who provided prizes. Although a very good time was had by all there did not appear to be too many sore heads at breakfast the following morning!" James Tudor-Pole

The picture quality is superb and it has a low light setting specifically for creatures of the dark. Because this Cam can be accessed so easily (with a password) it also serves well for worried parents wanting to keep an eye on their kids or the babysitter. I think it would be a good thing to put up in a bar as well so that the landlord could monitor and indeed advertise the goings on in his establishment. Of course if you have an I-Phone or similar product you can keep an eye on things from pretty much anywhere. about people in Mojácar being assaulted and robbed in their own homes. This is, I’m sure you will agree, a rather worrying development and one that could affect any one of us. Fortunately I have been approached by a local resident that may well have an answer to this problem. This fella is about to start supplying and installing a new type of web-cam. I have been to see the device working and it is fantastic. It works wirelessly and can be moved anywhere around a house if you have wifi or secured by cable if you don’t have that facility. The beauty of this gadget is many fold. It can be set to movement-activate, sound-activate, to run constantly or record with a strobe effect. It has a built in alarm that can be supplanted with a recording of your choice and is remote controlled as well. The lens can be manipulated from any computer anywhere in the world and can be wired directly into an external hard drive. I can see that this device may not

ome of us may not like it, but that event that so mercilessly reminds us of the passing of another year is upon us. Like war, one can only prepare and hope to survive it. Yes it’s nearly Christmas. So, as your Navigator I am duty bound to remind you that if you intend to requisition supplies online for the up coming skirmish then you should do so before supply lines are shut. The cut off dates for most international websites is generally around the 1st of December, you have been warned! I want also to remind you all about a site I’ve written about before. This site has a cut off date, the 1st of December. So if you like the idea of what is to follow, act soon. The site is: www.fatherchristmasletters.co.uk I think the name is fairly self explanatory. This site has some lovely features and all designed for the “little ones” which is what a
good Christmas is all about. The best part of Christmas, for me, the last couple of years has been dressing up as the man himself and sweeping the “littlun” off her tiny feet. That’s superlative fun but you can’t do it for all the children, that’s what distinguishes the real Father Christmas from your average Joe in the street. Anyway for £5.99 you can have any one of a range of personalised letters sent by the real Father Christmas to any child anywhere in the world (if you order before December 1st or December 14th for the UK). The letter even mentions one of the child’s friends, adding to its authenticity. Father Christmas writes several different styles of letter to make them more appropriate for different ages. These variations can all be read on-line, before ordering, in their draft and final versions. Seeing how a child’s face lights up as they open a letter from the actual Father Christmas himself is a heart warming feeling and makes all the stress associated with the event worthwhile. I think the price is competitive if compared with buying and posting a normal card so there is no real reason not to, is there? On a more somber note; I’ve heard some blood curdling stories lately

THE BALANCE OF LIFE
HOW REIKI GAVE ME A KICK START

I suppose my real kick start into the spiritual world was after my first Reiki attunement. It was a beautiful autumn day and the location of the reiki lesson was situated on a canal bank. There were 10 of us in the class, and I felt quite out of place as everyone was talking of chakras, auras and energies. Although I had heard of these things I wasn’t sure what they were. Fortunately for me it was all made clear to me during the next couple of days. We were told about chakras and how they were energy centres which I will talk more about throughout the course of my articles but firstly, I am often asked the question “What is Reiki?” What is Reiki? It is very difficult for me to describe in words as it is essentially an experience. The word “reiki” is Japanese and is made up from two words “ray” meaning “universal” and “ki” meaning “life force”. It is the energy that creates everything around and within us. Reiki is an ancient, simple and practical technique for deep relaxation handson healing. Why Reiki? The main reason for my choosing to learn reiki was for myself. I hoped that it could help me to overcome my fears and low self esteem, which was due to my abusive childhood. My low self esteem caused me to make decisions that had been detrimental to my life and I wanted to regain my confidence and my voice. The different degrees of Reiki There are four levels of Reiki, Reiki one, two, masters and advanced masters, the latter enabling you to go on and teach others. Reiki has a tremendous ability to balance the body’s chakras, relieve stress, and heal the body in general. It's a very balancing energy which removes what needs to be taken away and inserts when something needs to be added. With each level you will receive an attunement. In the case of Reiki one, a 21 day cleansing and balancing process takes place and the person who has received the attunement will notice change in their well-being and sense of self worth. In each case it is an individual experience. What is an attunement? During the attunement process, a series of energies represented by symbols are sealed into your energy field. It is often said that the ability to heal with Reiki increases with use. In other words, the more you use it, the more energy you can support flowing through you. The reasons for this are many fold, however, most agree that this is because of a process called, "Growing into Attunements". Simply put, the more you use the energy, the more you become attuned to it. One of the most important things to ask a master you are considering taking training from is if they have a healing practice, or simply teach. Their energetic make-up and experience level with the energy will be quite different if they do not practice regularly in healing sessions How do you feel after an attunement? Personally I felt elated as though a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders. Immediately afterwards I felt the need to take a stroll outside and be at one with nature. My husband noticed a difference in my persona straight away and from then on I have never looked back. I believe that Reiki has changed my life and even though my initial idea was to do only the first degree, I felt the need to go on to complete my advanced masters so that I could go on and teach others.

oes anyone remember that childhood experience of learning to ride a bicycle? Our parents or tutor furiously shouting “Balance, just balance.” Well if you have never experienced it, how do you know what to feel or what it is like. Then all of a sudden for one fleeting moment you got it “balance”, then after picking yourself off the floor having fallen off, you got back on your bike and continued to search for that single moment again. Maybe another half a dozen attempts and that elusive feeling, that new experience became a constant and you were happily riding your bike consistently in balance. Well maybe Life is a little like that too!! Continually looking for the perfect balance, if there is such a thing. I remember some years ago reading a quote and it has stayed with me for years, “To be in balance you have to be out of balance first,” if we were to apply that to our own lives right now, what would that look like? How would it feel? Where do we begin and what parts of life are we referring to? One exercise that we could take on is to look at our own personal life as it is right now and identify the important and different parts to it. If we were to break our life into between 6 and 10 parts and possibly finish up with 8 different areas. Draw a large circle on a piece of A4 paper and divide the circle into 8 equal segments then put the name of each part of our life in each segment. For example we could select from the following: Relationships (family, friends, social, partner), Career, Business, Job, Financial, Spiritual, Emotional, Health (nutrition, exercise, fitness), Personal development, Education and Hobbies - this list is by no means complete it is just a guide, an example of some of the areas of our lives we may choose to add to our wheel of life. Having identified our own personal list and entered them into our circle, we mark each spoke of the wheel from 1 to 10 dividing it equally - 1 on the inside to 10 on the outside. We then give each area of our life a mark, 1 being poor, 10 being excellent. For example you may feel that in the area of health you are a 6 and in your career or job you are a 3 or an 8 (dependant upon how much you enjoy your work). Having marked each area of your life with a dot on the spoke of each wheel you then go around the wheel and join the dots. You will be left with a shape, subject to how uniform or not your wheel appears will indicate how balanced you are in your life at present. No one is suggesting that achieving perfect balance is easy or even attainable; however it gives us awareness to where we may be out of balance and areas where we can improve plus confirms the areas of our lives that are working well. In the modern world we live in today we have so many choices and stimulations, that sometimes we can be caught up in the pace and pressures of living. This can lead us to develop stress and tension both physically and emotionally. From a personal perspective this is one of the main reasons I have continued to practice and now teach Tai Ji. It has assisted me in increasing my own personal awareness to the stress and tension that I used to hold both physically and emotionally. By firstly becoming aware, it can then lead to the option of choosing what to do next. One of my favourite authors is Dan Millman and in his book “The laws of Spirit” he says the following: “The Law of Balance – Finding the middle way If gravity is glue that holds the universe together, balance is the key that unlocks its secrets. Balance applies to our body, mind and emotions, to all levels of our being. It reminds us that anything we do, we can overdo or underdo, and that if the pendulum of our lives or habits swings too far to one side, it will inevitably swing to the other.”

Tai Ji ... Your Best Friend by Steve Burton Mojácar based Tai Ji Instructor
T
hree years into my Tai Ji journey in 2003 I was participating as a student in a one day Tai Ji workshop. Most of the days content was to focus and work on the actual practical side or the doing part of the art. However, towards the end of the day we all sat down together (about 40 students) to write some notes and to discuss some of the theory. It was at that point that our SIFU (master/teacher of the art) explained his view and perception of how Tai Ji had become his best friend over his 40 plus years of taking part in his daily practice. Before I share some of the points he made and a few of my own that have been developed over the last 10 years of practising the art, let us first take a look at possible points that many of us would agree makes a best friend. Spending time together, trusting each other, always there when needed, being understanding and supportive, prepared to sit and listen without judgement, being open and honest with each other, stick together through good and bad times; remain consistent and reliable over a period of time. Well our SIFU said that whenever he needed his best friend (Tai Ji) it was always there when he called upon it, it would always show him something he needed to learn or know, regardless of the weather it was always there, the more he practiced and gave it time the closer and better it became and finally and most importantly he said, with a big smile, “it never argued with him.” In my own experience all of the above are true and to add just a couple of extra points; whenever my energy has felt a little low it has picked me up, it has helped me relax and become more understanding and patient and is always showing me something new. So if you are looking for a close relationship with yourself at first that over time can become your best friend you may have to look no further than the art of Tai Ji.
One Saturday each month we will be holding free talks, open to all, covering Osteopathy, Acupuncture, Reflexology, Nutrition and How to Look 10 Years Younger. Call now to secure your place.

www.advertisermojacar.com On Saturday 6th November, the annual Wacky Races event in aid of Asprodalba will take place in the small pueblo of Villaricos. As in previous years, the organisers will transform this normally tranquil village into a racetrack for hand-pushed go-carts which will compete to win one of the coveted prizes fabricated in the workshops of Asprodalba - a local centre for people with learning difficulties in nearby Vera, for whom the event is organised. This year Asprodalba will be entering their cart with the intention to actually win – not just as a token or symbolic entry as before. Latest news is that, in addition to the races, side stalls, line dancing, and general festive goings-on, there will be some superb items in the auction and raffle … both of which will be held midway into the event. Auction items include: * 2010 Ryder Cup golf package including commemorative book, T-shirt, cap, watch, neck pass, etc. * An England football shirt signed by Jamie Redknapp, Teddy Sherringham and Alan Shearer, donated by Soccer Aid * "The Tattoo" - an original painting by Melanie of Indalo Art * Voucher for free car hire for a whole week between November and April Raffle prizes include an array of vouchers for free meals at various local restaurants, many bottles of wine and spirits, hairdressing vouchers, a hamper, and a special, lucky charm gift featuring the famous Indalo of Almería. All proceeds from the event go to Asprodalba. Anyone wanting last minute information, or wishing to participate in some way, is advised to contact the organisers at the Taberna Cristina bar on 693743791.

Black Cohosh Once I hit my forties, my body seemed to go into crisis. I actually thought I had something seriously wrong with me. The thought of going to the doctors and maybe having my fears confirmed didn’t thrill me so I decided, first of all, to surf the net and see if I could find out for myself what was causing me to feel so unwell. After inputting some of my symptoms into keyword searches, lots of information came up. Most of what I found was hormone related. I was hairdressing at the time and I learned that the inhalation of the hair chemicals was part of the problem as these chemicals would sit in my digestive tract and create an imbalance of my hormones and that, long term, this could cause serious health problems. This was one of the key notes that led me to giving up hairdressing. Further research led me to find out that I was in the early days of menopause. What Joy!!!! (NOT). I felt out of sorts most of the time, I ached all over, I felt debilitated and depressed. I can’t have this I thought, “I need to feel better and regain the energy and zest for life that I felt in my thirties.” So once again I researched on the internet and found out about a herb called “Black Cohosh”. Where does it come from? Native to eastern USA and Canada, this herb grows in shaded woods and hedgerows. It is the root that is harvested and dried, once the rest of the plant has died down in the autumn. It is now also cultivated in Europe. PAGE 14
“Your health is my passion” by Diana Dudás m.f.h
.t. m.i.c.h.t.
Who should take it? Black Cohosh is useful for cramps, sciatic pains, painful periods and pre-menstrual tension, menopausal hot flushing, tinnitus and rheumatic disorders. Native American Indians used this plant for menstrual and menopausal problems. It was used foremost for the above symptoms and problems where oestrogen production is too low, and can be extremely helpful for debility and depression. Aches and Pains! Black Cohosh is equally useful for rheumatic problems including rheumatoid arthritis and for inflammatory arthritis. It is useful for headaches and a herb to think of in cases of osteoporosis. Its sedative activity makes it of value in high blood pressure, tinnitus (great combined with Gingko), whooping cough and asthma. Combinations: Similar to aromatherapy, natural medicine can be enhanced when combining more than one herb. Some useful combinations for Black Cohosh are: With Wild Yam for menopausal problems and for inflammatory arthritis e.g. rheumatoid arthritis. With St John’s Wort for hot flushing With Gingko for tinnitus Cautions: Do not take during pregnancy or while breast feeding. Next month I will write about how you can help your digestive problems, including flatulence. I am more than happy to accept emails with any health care concerns that you may have and advise you on holistic treatments and natural medicines that will be beneficial for your well-being. www.advertisermojacar.com Tuesday 19th October was Spanish National Breast Cancer Awareness Day, Día Contra el Cáncer de Mama. Throughout Spain a great effort was made to raise the awareness of Breast Cancer. FACE (Fundraising in Arboleas, Caring for Everyone) Committee Members along with the Arboleas Mayor, Angel Garcia Martínez, travelled to the Regional Headquarters of the AECC (Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer) in Almeria. Upon arrival the Mayor and the FACE Committee Members were met by the Presidente de la Junta Provincial, Francisco Balcázar Linares. FACE aided by the Arboleas Mayor, presented the AECC Presidente with a cheque for 2,500€ from money raised by the Arboleas Fun Run organised by the Sophia Wellness Centre and FACE. After the cheque presentation, the mayor and the FACE Committee were taken to a local Plaza where they were shown one of the Breast Cancer Awareness Stalls set up in the city for the day and which were being run entirely by volunteers. A sea of pink weaved its way down the rose-lined path from Mojacar Pueblo to the Hotel Puntazo on the playa. Over 400 took part in the campaign, organised by the AECC, the message “HAVE A MAMMOGRAM”. If detected early there is a good chance it can be treated successfully.

WENDY LESTER HAS JOINED THE SPANISH PROPERTY CHOICE TEAM Wendy, a well known face in Mojácar has worked within the rental and property management industry for many years. Recently she was offered a new and exciting opportunity within the rental division of Spanish Property Choice and now looks forward to moving SPC Rentals forward with her professionalism, passion, commitment and abundance of energy.
Q: You are obviously very excited about your new venture, what is your background Wendy and what is your objective? A: Yes, I am elated, I feel I have joined not only a “true family run business” but a very “professional and well respected” one as well, they have made me feel very much part of the family. I have been working within the rental industry for many years and was happy in my previous position, however this was an opportunity not to be missed - it allows me the freedom to manage and develop SPC Rentals, a challenge I have gripped with both hands. My objective is to deliver what I promise! You will always get an honest opinion (whether you like it or not!). Now I am in my forties I am much more willing to say my piece and stand my ground if I believe it is for the good of my clients and the property. We now offer competitive rates on all rental packages and are flexible and adaptable to all client’s needs and requirements. I want to shed a positive light and inspiration and I aim to offer our combined valid experience to all our customers, past, present and future, as well as presenting ourselves as informative, (not invasive), private, (but not communal), professional but personal and think outside the box “this is my objective”. Q: Where are you now based Wendy? A: We are located in a lovely prime, frontline position opposite the Parque Comercial, next to the Cajamar bank, oh, and not to rub it in too much (lol) we overlook the beautiful beach & Mediterranean sea.
Q: What is the rental market like at the moment? A: The rental market in Spain is booming. There is a significant increased demand for long term property rentals, in all areas of our “Corner of Enchantment” and I have clients now looking for villas and apartments here in Mojácar as well as the surrounding areas for both holiday lets & long term rentals. So far the response has been tremendous, so what I will say is, if you have a property you are looking to put with a professional agent, who delivers a total property management package at a preferred rate! and who offers one of the highest profile marketing packages within the province! then please pop in to see me.
Q: Do you see the business structure of the rental industry as being a predominantly male market?
A: Absolutely not! I believe that a female leader in the work place can lead the way in a positive and constructive manner, you know women are known to be able to multi task, balancing the work place and the kids. One of my mentors was Margaret Thatcher who had a great sense and timing and was strong and graceful. She entered the territory of male domination and set the stage for women to follow and learn the art of push and pull. I believe that cleaning out the old to make way for the new is a wonderful practice, especially in this industry, and it’s now my time to prove to myself what many people tell me I am capable of; this is why I have grasped the opportunity to work with such a strong, pro-active company which also, as a matter of interest, has a very strong female managerial presence!! A warm welcome awaits you at SPC Rentals. Call Wendy on 950 475 823, E-mail: rentals@spanishpropertychoice.com or visit their website at: www.spanishpropertychoice.com Spanish Property Choice. is producing a pantomime, Snow White, to be performed in January. At the auditions they had more adult applicants than they had parts, which was fantastic. Members of The Luvvies, The Independent Theatre, The Almanzora singers and people who just wanted to have a go from the community all have kindly offered their help and expertise. 20 children went along and are now working with Stacy at the gym club at Girosol on a Saturday morning and Jay at his theatre and dance group at Rumores, also Saturday mornings. They are looking for more children as they still need some dwarfs! English or Spanish. If you have a child who would love to be in the panto, whatever their abilities, including children with learning disabilities, they can accommodate them. (It is an ideal situation for children to gain valuable experience of learning to work as a team; it also helps to improve their concentration levels and boost their confidence and self esteem.) They have also had offers of scenery painters and assemblers and backstage help and a ‘wardrobe mistress’ has kindly offered to make up most of the costumes. And interpreter, Cathryn Jones will be narrating, so that the Spanish audience can enjoy the production as much as they will. They still need some spare pots of paint for scenery, white emulsion and bright coloured wool and are looking for sponsors for program, printing and ticket costs. Any company wishing to support them will be entitled to adverts in their program and sponsors names will be printed on the posters which will be put up in many of the surrounding villages. If you are interested in anything at all please contact Chris at villafreestone@hotmail.co.uk The Mayor of Arboleas, Angel Garcia, has formed a NEW Help Desk operating from the Town Hall. The NEW Help Desk which replaces the previous operation is organized with the cooperation of Maria Luisa from the Police Local, along with Stuart and Lara. The aim of this operation is to help and support ALL residents in Arboleas with their queries and problems and

it can also arrange appointments for Residencia at the Almeria office of Extranjeros. The Help Desk will operate on Wednesdays from 9am to midday, upstairs in the Town Hall. If you have a question that needs answering go along and see them and they will do their best to assist you. Puppy Rescue desperately need dog walkers to help exercise the many dogs in their care. Please consider giving up just an hour or two once a week to walk with one of their abandoned puppies and dogs. Lifts can be arranged and you can enjoy a brisk stroll with others and keep fit while helping a needy animal. If you would like further details please telephone Chris on 600 287 726 - she will be so grateful. APSA animal charity is in desperate need of dog beds, old bedding and blankets to keep their many homeless dogs warm over the coming months. Please, as you are getting out your winter bedding, look for any items you can donate that are clean but that you no longer need. Take them to the APSA shop, open between 10am and 2pm, in Calle Ancha, opposite San Francisco Square in Albox or ring Di 663 762 642. Your old blankets and bedding will be gratefully received. APSA has over 100 dogs in their care.

I popped into Mo’s Bar in La Alfoquía for a quiet drink only to find that Mo had invited a couple of his musician friends in for a bit of a last minute jam session. Somehow word had gotten around and before you knew it the place was full. It is often said that ‘ad hoc’ dos turn out to be the best, and what a night this turned out to be. The night kicked off with Jake Bourke’s last performance in Spain before setting off to travel across the globe for the next year. Jake, an accomplished guitarist and vocalist performed some classic numbers followed up by some of his own compositions. Jake was then joined on stage by members of the bands LewMoLew and Fast Eddy, featuring Mellow Mo (Rhythm Guitar & Banjo), Lew Aldridge (Harmonica) Bongo Bob Neale (Drums) and Lewis Morrey, aka Lewcanoe (Bass Guitar). The entertainment didn’t stop there because also taking to the stage was the Dog House Band with Doggy Dog fronting the ensemble to belt out some fantastic rock numbers. Sitting quietly in the audience watching dad perform was Lewcanoe’s daughter Sarah. Sarah aka “Squishy Woo” an accomplished solo singer, and who is hoping to form her own band in the UK when she returns, was persuaded to take to the stage, although by now it was getting a little crowded. Sarah thrilled the audience with her beautiful clear voice. Late in the evening Saxophonist “Hot Lips” Hillary made an appearance and for the next hour we were treated to some great Jazz. You had to be there to appreciate Jazz musicians being accompanied by rock vocalists and the classic voice of Squishy Woo, all performing at the same time. Great music and great fun and all for free. If you play an instrument, and would like to join in the fun, or want to go along just to be entertained then contact Mo on 950 449 635 or email mosbar@live.co.uk Review by Pit Ball PS Don’t blame me for the names, apparently that’s what they call each other

APSA, the animal charity of Albox, recently held its AGM at La Parrilla Restaurant. Members and guests enjoyed an evening of celebrating success as well as the business items of the meeting. Christine, fundraising coordinator, spoke about her past experiences in voluntary work and stressed how the future will be challenging for fundraisers and the importance of working as a team. She also spoke of the organisation for the charity’s first pantomime to be performed for three nights in January. The first award of the night went to Kathy, Albox shop manageress and regular fundraiser, the shop raises a reliable income each year and Kathy thanked her team of shop ladies. Sally received a prize in recognition of her hard work in running the monthly meal raffles. Sue was thanked for her hard work as fashion show organiser, Laura for setting up the APSA website, Pat for her sterling efforts in running the raffles, Sue Lancaster for having the ideas and then running the hugely successful May Fayre and sponsored walks. The most popular prize though was a Lifetime Achievement Award presented to Vera, (pictured left) an inspiration and constant supporter of APSA over the years. Later, Di gave her report, as Acting Chair and Homing Officer, including financial details and plans for the future. She reported that by the end of 2009, APSA had 44 dogs in kennels and 40 in foster homes. She had also homed 92 dogs, 1 pig and 10 cats and 9 dogs had been reunited with their owners. She receives 6 calls a day on average as homing officer and she described some heartwarming examples of rescues and foster care. The APSA shop in Tijola is desperately in need of donations to sell and of volunteers to help the small group who work in the shop. APSA can only keep going with fundraising. If you would like to know more about the charity or would like to get involved in any way please ring 663 762 642 or go to www.apsa.org.es, we always welcome new members and new ideas, please help if you can.

Suzie
A gathering was held in the Los Arcos beach bar on Sunday, October 17th, in remembrance of the late Bob Fowler, who died during August this year. The meeting was arranged by Bob's companion of many years, Margaret. It was very well attended by many "old-timers" as well as Bob's twin brother, Bill, and indeed gave me the impression of being a flash-back to the eighties. During the seventies Bob opened Mojácar's very first English run grocery, in the Gaviota-2 complex, called "Arco Iris". This later gained fame as "Arthur’s Supermarket" after Bob sold it to Arthur Cox. Meanwhile, just across the road, next to what are nowadays D.Match Digital and Ric Polansky's property office, Bob founded two companies, both still running, namely Mo-Car car rental and Mojacar Property Management. In common with many of Mojacar's old timers - for instance the late Arthur Danahar was a British boxing champion and took part in the very first boxing match ever to appear on TV - Bob too gained glory in his younger days. I gather from Bill that Bob was the 1958 British "cyclo-cross"champion (see medal). To the very end of his days Bob retained a keen interest in the sport, and possessed a profound knowledge of its tactics. Many were the times when Bob would fire up the engine of his "tin tent" and disappear into the mountains, in order to follow major cycling events such as the Tours of France, Spain and Italy. The local standing joke was that Bob could still have been a champion cyclist if he hadn't insisted on stopping every time he encountered a tapas bar! Yes indeed! There were many fond memories recounted of Bob. PAGE 24
“Miss me, but let me go” Now I’ve come to the end of the way And the sun has set for me, I want no rites in a gloom-filled room Don’t cry for a soul set free. Miss me a little, but not for long, And not with your head bowed low. Remember the love we’ve all shared, Miss me, but let me go. So while you are grieving, and sick at heart, Go to the friends we know And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds; Miss me, but let me go. On Sunday 3rd October Suzie Tapper celebrated her 65th birthday at Bar La Montaña with all her friends! It was a wonderful day, Matt and Carole the new owners made everyone very welcome! However, just before midnight the following day, Suzie was suddenly taken from them as her car left the road not far from where she had lived, for many years, in Bedar! She will be sadly missed, by all who knew her. As one resident said, after hearing the news of Suzie's passing, "Bedar will not be the same with out Sue Tapper.” On Sunday 10th October there was a Memorial Service held in Bar La Montaña, over 200 people attended. As Suzie loved music, many local artists arrived. There was a short service, presided over by Pastor Sarah Dixon and Marcus read a short poem by Henry Scott Holland, ‘Death Is Nothing At All’.
A song for Susie by Steve ‘Bish’ Bourke Oct 5 2010 She was like a mountain flower, that sparkles with the morning dew. She gave to us all a coloured waterfall, when her smile was shining through. If I ever had a sister, someone I could trust and share my views. I'd like to think she'd be the perfect one for me. My friend Susie!! We recall your moments of madness, funny hats and dancing with the broom. Singing with the band, always there to lend a hand. Our friend Susie. Chorus ... Susie Q our Susie Q we're all in the next room missing you. Although now we're apart your smile stays in our hearts. Forever Susie Q. Our loss is God’s gain things will never be the same without you our Susie Q.

Tel: 950 475 110 PREDATORS BAHIA and CALA This sweet mother/daughter family have lived their whole life together on a farm, but were going to be destroyed because they had killed some chickens. Fortunately they were surrendered to PAWS, frightened and as it turned out, pregnant. Initially they were in foster care where they did extremely well but they are now in the shelter and they are absolutely miserable in this environment, which causes them to be sad and confused and they prefer to hide away. PAWS staff are very concerned about these little ladies and we know that they would make nice pets. We hope that both dogs can be homed together as they find much comfort in each other. Bahia especially likes to cuddle. Once the dogs can be in a quiet and relaxed environment we know that they will come out of their shells, just as they did in their foster home.
It's been more than two decades since the original Predator hit the big screen, and the ugly mo-fo has had a tough time of it in the intervening years. First up there was Predator 2, an unhinged sequel that replaced Arnold Schwarzenegger with Danny Glover and the jungle setting with a futuristic cityscape. However, while not a patch on the original, it was nevertheless far superior to the Alien vs Predator movies, tame knock-offs that messed with the heritage of both franchises and yet satisfied the fans of neither. Which brings us to Predators, Robert Rodriguez and Nimrod Antal's big-budget action flick which is less a reboot and more a direct sequel to the 1987 original, ignoring everything that has come between, scaling back the story to its bare bones and returning the franchise to its natural habitat the jungle. All in all, a welcome return to a film that had me on the edge of my seat over 20 years ago and hasn't failed to deliver this time round.
Also coming in November ... BREEZE and DRAUGHTY Abandoned by their owner, Breeze is the most loving and easy-going cat, she adores being cuddled and stroked but would be lost without her sister. Draughty is playful and affectionate, small but with a big heart. Both cats are happy playing outside all day. Fully vaccinated, blood tested, passports – everything except a home to call their own. If you would like further information on Breeze & Draughty, please contact Diane 664 246 728.

NOVEMBER Birth Flower: Chrysanthemum. Cultivated for
the last 2000 years, the name "Chrysanthemum" is derived from the Greek words "chrysos" meaning gold and "anthos" meaning flower. It is also called the 'mum'. Colours include pink, red, white, yellow, mauve and orange. According to the beliefs of Feng Shui, chrysanthemums are believed to bring laughter and happiness to the home. An ancient Chinese city was named Chu-Hsien, meaning "chrysanthemum city". Meaning: With Love and Cheerfulness. Hidden message: favoured during the Victorian era "You're a Wonderful Friend". Birthstone: Topaz The word Topaz is derived from Topazos, a small island in the Red Sea, where the Romans obtained a stone which they called by this name. A mineral occurring in rhombic prisms, generally yellowish and pellucid is also colourless and of greenish, bluish or brownish shades. Topaz with orangered and pink colours are rare and most valuable. Topaz can be found in Brazil, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and China. Topaz was once considered to protect its wearer against perils and dangers in travelling and to avert all complaints of the chest and bowels and associated with constancy, loyalty, faithfulness and friendship. The traditional metaphysical properties are strength, releasing tension and balancing emotions. Its healing properties are reputed to be effective for health problems relating to sanity, asthma, gout, blood disorders, tuberculosis and insomnia. The Topaz is also used to enhance spiritual rejuvenation and feelings of happiness. Sign of the Zodiac: Scorpio October 24 - November 21 Characteristics: Focused, Determined, Emotional, Hypnotic & Complex Ruling Planet: Pluto Ruling Element: Water

Killer Sudoku
Solution on page 34
A popular variation of Sudoku is to add some arithmetic on top of the basic rules. In Killer Sudoku the standard grid is divided up into collections, in the top left square of the collection is the sum of the numbers that go in the squares making up the group. This lets you solve squares in new ways, in the simplest case you could have a collection of only two squares, if the sum is 3 then you know one square is 1 and the other 2, or if the sum was 17 then they must be 8 and 9. So the sum is giving extra information about the numbers in the squares quite apart from the standard 'number unique to a group' coming from Sudoku. A key starting point is to look for collections with a low average (e.g. a total of 6 for 3 squares, average 2, means can only be {1, 2, 3}) or a high average (e.g. a total of 30 for 4 squares, average 7.5 means can only be {6,7,8,9}) Usually the extra information from these additions is sufficient to start off with an empty grid and yet still be able to solve it.

The Beachcomber will have a fishing meeting on Tuesday November 30th from 7pm until 9pm, just a get-together because we haven’t had one during the summer. By all means bring tackle along if you want to sell some. “John the Fly” has agreed to bring along his fly tying stuff again and show his skills. I expect if “Luxemburg Roland” is back from his travels he too will come along and show us his tying methods and again maybe bring his squid lures and tell us how to catch the critters. We hope all our Capitanos will attend for you to organise a boat fishing trip or ask their advice. As always I’ll be here to answer any questions including up-to-date fishing license news. The Anglers Together Club I have mentioned before is having its next meeting on Saturday November 13th at 12 o’clock at Los Galayos Bar, opposite beach front at Puerto de Mazarron. The club is not about match fishing, it is for sea and coarse anglers and was formed to put like-minded people together; I am hoping to make this meeting myself. Two new fishing clubs have got under way, firstly Abbey Angling Club in the area of Playa Flamenca just south of Torrevieja and a bit far for most of us. The Club however, is joining the Murcia Federation and will be fishing some of their
matches in Murcia. Contact Mick on 965 327 858 or Terry on 965 328 368. The second is much closer, in Albox. Launched in the middle of October it is a sea fishing club but I have no further details and will let you know when I find out more. “Captain Brian Cuba” has been out three times this week on his Garrucha moored boat. The first and second of these trips with his first mate “Farmer Rory” and they were joined over the two trips by “Spanish Peter”, “Chippy Pete”, Yorkshire Phil”, “Yorkshire Mike”, “Essex Mike”, “Scottish Andrew” and his mate Ian. They all caught fish with some worth mentioning, Pete (Spanish) a big triggerfish, Pete (Chippy) a good comber and Phil, a 10lb sunfish. Other fish caught included lots of scabbard fish, pandoras, combers, pickerels, weavers and blue mouths. Brian’s third trip out last week included yours truly and “Chippy Pete”, “Snapper John” and “Moray Jeremy”. What a great day we had, caught lots of different species including, an amberjack, red snappers, scabbard fish, pandoras, Spanish mackerel, combers, pickerels, banded bream and weavers (most of which were shook off the hooks instead of boating the dangerous little monsters) and a couple of others I can’t remember. See photo above right of Jeremy and a red snapper or common bream, no moray eels for him today. Two of us had hooks bitten off including me. I was reeling in what I thought was two or three small fish when I was hit mid water by a bigger one and I played it very slowly on purpose. Suddenly my rod bent over and the fighting stopped and there was little bend in the rod. Something bigger had nicked my big fish off the bottom hook as it turned out and
bitten the trace off from this point down, including my weight. That was a decent fish and I don’t expect it will have too much trouble getting rid of my 3oz lead hanging from its mouth. Oh and what eventually came up was three combers probably feeling scared as they had a lucky escape and all went back down after we pricked their swim bladders. We fished in front of Garrucha Marina and drifted over areas from 130 feet to in excess of 600. When the wind, due to change direction but as often happens, stopped, we moved over my favourite mark - two big holes ranging between 250 and 300 feet. Normally drifting here at any speed is a bit dangerous due to tackle loss and we usually catch well from this mark. Just before we moved I dropped my speed jigging lure to the bottom in about 350 feet and lifted it just off the bottom as the boat moved off. Over the next 500 metres I suspect the jig would have come up to about mid water. Just before we were in the right spot I felt what I thought was a hit but didn’t know for sure if it was a fish or one or both single hooks attached to its head had spun round and caught the line as sometimes happens when jigging. Anyway I reeled in an amberjack weighing about 3 or 4lbs. I’ve not heard anything from the other Capitanos and the beach fishing lads had nothing exciting to report to me. “Baza Barry” is still suffering from a back problem and hasn’t been out. I have no more news about “Casa Verde Barry” so I’m hoping no news is good news. The Rods and Reels Club last week fished a match on the Rio Segura at Murcia. There was concern the match might have to be moved due to heavy rain forecast, but luckily it held off with only the towpath being a quagmire. Results on the day were
mixed as the river was still low. On saying that, some of the more noted pegs failed to produce like normal, and some of the other pegs not always included produced very well. Top anglers on the day: 1st Doug (“Welsh Goldminer”) Hornblow fishing the pole using corn with 34.02 kilo’s. 2nd Ian (“Irish Wizard”) Dalzell same method with 27.72 kilo’s 3rd Bill (“The Master”) Reade same method with 25.74 kilo’s. Checkout Mojacar’s weather and sea conditions here on the Beachcomber’s webcam. www.almeriafreeads.com/ webcam For further information on any of the above or to find out about beach, boat or coarse fishing licenses, see John at the Beachcomber Bar Restaurant on Mojácar Playa or tel 950 473 099. In case of difficulty reaching me (Probably out fishing) ask staff for my mobile number. See more about the Beachcomber at www.beachcomber-restaurant.com Tight Lines, Beachcomber John.
