From the Editor

W

elcome to the first issue of the second year under my editorship. Yes folks, a year has passed since my first solo edition and what a year it has been! A time full of learning and endurance testing - deadline versus sleep!! This month I’ve set the puzzle fiends amongst you some new challenges. You have a Killer Sudoku and a Wordoku to solve. You also have a new themed crossword, some more quiz questions and a mini picture quiz. This month also has an exciting new article by Ian Farlow entitled Searching for Tigers. Alkemi Holistic Centre introduce you to Phytotherapy and Moonstone talk you through a simple but effective meditation technique. There’s also Tai Ji, Sol-aero, Movieland, the Navigator and a couple or three by yours truly to keep you entertained. Jos Biggs took up Petter’s ‘P’ challenge, see page 24 and

Mojácar Community Library have advised of their new selection of books now in. Thanks as always to those who have sent in their own news of events and photos. Remember if you need a photographer Ian is available for weddings, christenings or birthday parties – see inside back cover for contact details. Before I go … When you’ve all recovered from ‘Augustitis’ better brush the cobwebs off those Halloween outfits cos next month I’ll be able to tell you where you can go to wear them. Until then, Tracey

Z-8 Mojacar Playa (opp. Ferreteria Lopez) Thursday 12th August was not only the ‘Glorious 12th’ for the start of the Grouse shooting season, it was also the 3rd birthday for the Club Taurino de Mojácar. A good time was had by all at one of the Club’s favourite venues, Restaurante Osteria where over 70 members were joined by Angel Medina - Mojacar’s Councillor for Culture and Tourism. Mike reminded them of all the fabulous short breaks, day trips, lunches and guest speakers that the membership have enjoyed during the last year and it was confirmed that it had been a very busy and exciting year. At the time they were looking forward to their next short break - a large group were to descend on Cordoba to enjoy 3 days of culture and fun. The Club Taurino de Mojácar hosts many outings and trips for its members, not all concerning the Feria Nacional, and acts as a social club to enable its members to learn more of the Spanish way of life and culture. They are a non-profit making club, membership is free and they welcome people who are on their own for whatever reason. Anyone interested in further details contact Mike or Audrey on 950 475 261 or visit their website at www. club-taurino-mojacar.com PAGE 4

AND all diners receive a raffle ticket for a weekly draw to win a Sunday Roast main course – see their ad on the inside front cover. • At 22 you can win a table for 4 at the Sunday Supper Club or a lunchtime Menu del Día. All you have to do is enjoy lunch or dinner in the restaurant or coffee and cake on their pavement patio, answer the question and fill in your details on the voucher and hand it in. You can either cut out the voucher on page 21 or collect one from 22. For the record, the 22 desserts really are to die for. There are over 18 (YES 18!) on their menu which makes choosing just one a real problem. But not for the recent table of four who decided that even though they had ordered the white choc cheesecake, the apple pie, sticky toffee pudding and the meringue they were also going to have to order the baileys cheesecake and the mars bar ice cream pie to share. Not a scrap was left …now that's some going!! Zak’s Plaice in Garrucha have added another tempting special to their menu ... “Cheesy Chips”. Originally for the kids but is now proving extremely popular with the grown-ups! News is just in of the Rose Singers Autumn Concert. They will be performing the usual mix of lovely music at TWO venues this time – Miraflores, Camping Los Gallardos on November 5th (which affords disabled access) and the Kimrick, Mojácar Playa on November 6th. More info will be available in the next issue. And finally … Club Taurino Mojacar are organising a trip to Sevilla on 22nd November for 4 days/3 nights staying at a hotel in the historical city centre within easy walking distance of the shops. where I have to label a website essential. Everything about www.first-school.ws is interactive. For example, if you choose the "fables" or "fairy tales" section you are presented with a wide range of stories that come with advice on how to immerse the child completely. This includes printer friendly pictures of the story's characters to colour-in and direction on acting out certain scenes with an emphasis on exercise and stretching. Having a printer is an important part of the way www.first-school.ws do things, but not essential, you can always read from the screen. They have a page that lists all of the materials you will need to complete all of the activities they have and thankfully the list of stuff needed does not extend much further than the list of things they are going to need for school anyway. The themes for play include such vitals as alphabet, character education, colours, environmental education, fairy tales and legends, health and nutrition, countries and cultures, numbers and maths and so on and so on. These guys have really been doing their homework and seem to have cut no corners in their great work.

he summer madness is drawing to an end and it is nearly time to relax "after" our holidays, oh the irony of it! The kids will soon be back at school and maybe, just maybe, we'll get a chance to put our feet up and take a deep sigh just before half term begins. Of course many kids are happy to entertain themselves with their computers but an undisciplined approach to this is widely considered to be seriously unadvisable. With this in mind I went hunting for appropriate websites that would safely entertain and inform and I found a couple of gems. If you google "kids games" you'll find a plethora of websites that are set up with the "littlun" in mind. www.jumpstart.com being one popular example (they claim 30 million users). It is a place where the emphasis is on 3d-gaming. Many of the sites on offer are free

Tito’s Complex

T

but they mostly require registration and rightly so. Any sites that you find for your kids should always be scrutinised properly before you set those young and easily influenced minds free on them. Apart from the obvious dangers of children running wild across the web there are more subtle threats, such as marketing men and religious groups that have set up websites with their own specific agenda in mind, albeit dressed as some sort of contribution to your child's growth and well being. The internet is crammed with stalking obsessives that have no regard for anyone but themselves. I feel that computer gaming should be kept at a minimum in young children, especially when it requires no human interaction and with this in mind I searched for something that draws the child out … not in. www.first-school.ws is a wonderful website. I stopped here and had a good look round. This site has an impressive array of activities and games for sproggs aged 2 to 6. The emphasis is on education and fun, always a winning combination and it is professionally laid out by people who must have very good teaching credentials. This is one of the rare occasions

Another feature of his wonderful site and it is perhaps the jewel in the crown is that with one click the whole site including all the stories can be translated into Spanish. I see here an opportunity for some parents to learn with the children, you can’t get much more interactive than that .... can you? On the same thread I have a link for you … www.cs.cmu.edu/~spok/grimmtmp/ This will take you to a list of 209 Grimm brother’s fairy tales. If you click on any one of them you will get a very printer friendly text for those all important bed-time stories - printing them out is a lot better than reading from an illuminated screen when trying to get them down and its a lot cheaper than buying books. I suppose I should apologise for not getting this information to you before the school holidays started, but then again every day is a good day for playing and learning. During the months of June and July there was a total of 8854 physical consultations, 5202 at the main office in the village and 3652 at the office located on the Playa, 815 telephone calls and 8523 emails. To this must be added daily visits to their website www.mojacar.es and their presence on social networking sites – the tourist office presently has more than 1,500 friends registered on Facebook. This summer two display screens were installed, one in the Plaza Nueva and one in the Parque Comercial for 24 hours a day broadcasting of information of interest to both residents and visitors such as cultural and recreational activities, public transport schedules and taxi, radio and weather information, etc. The origin of the tourists has been: National - 54.04% Madrid, 36.07% Andalucía, 22.04% Valencia, 14.18% Castilla La Mancha, 5.83% Cataluña, 14.25% Castilla y León, 7.76% Residents. International - June saw 71.95% British consultations and July saw 50.73% plus 24.93% French. During the summer both offices have been open 7 days a week. Since the 7th July the village office moved to a new location next to the church in the Plaza del Frontón. It seems the statistics support the success of this new site since it has exceeded the record number of visitors on Sundays. The demand for information about Mojácar mainly included the old town, beaches, hotel facilities, restaurants, transport, etc. as well as places of interest, leisure and sport activities. Of the province mainly Cabo de Gata national park, Nijar and the Tabernas desert. In comparison, winter 2010 – January, February and March saw 5004 physical consultations of which 1118 were international and 767 telephone calls including 14 international. Spring 2010 - April and May, a total of 5787 physical consultations of which 1900 were international and 680 telephone calls – 6 international. Oficina Municipal de Turismo de Mojácar 9 Agosto 2010

Herbert Finch Colonel TD, known in Mojácar rather less formally as Bertie Finch, will be celebrating his 95th birthday on September 18th with a special buffet lunch in a secret location in the countryside with family and friends. ‘Family’, of course, can mean quite a crew when you are 95 and Bertie’s clan is large and comes from Canada, Monte Carlo, Holland, Tenerife and the Channel Islands as well as his beloved England. His dear companion Inga will be with him and (behind the scenes) organising the special day. Bertie was born in Parbold, Lancashire in 1915 and was part of the D Day landing force in Normandy where he was promoted in the field to captain. He was active in Antwerp, Cuxhaven and many other areas with his small specialist group as an ‘Enemy Ammunition Disposal Group’ which were later known as Bomb Disposal Units’. Bertie was demobilised in 1946 and later he rejoined the Territorial Army and in 1947 was promoted to Major and later in 1967 retired as Deputy Inspector of Ordnance Services Western Command with the Rank of Colonel. He moved to Mojácar in 1980 after the death of his wife and famously registered the first local Bowling Club, located in Cabrera. In 1996 he was given the task to form the first Branch of the Royal British Legion which he did with 15 members. Later he helped with the formation of two more branches. Inga helped tremendously, as always. Bertie will soon be 95, and all his many friends in Mojácar will join me in wishing him ‘Congratulations’ and a ‘Happy Birthday’.

Tai Ji ... HOW COULD IT FIT INTO MY WORLD? by Steve Burton - Mojácar based Tai Ji Instructor

T

iming is critical in most aspects of life and dependent upon your personal beliefs may be everything happens for a reason or happens when it is meant to. I remember receiving some information a few years ago that said things come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime. This was very impacting to me at the time and over the many years that have passed since reading it, has proven to be very accurate in my life experience. Tai Ji came into my life at the perfect time and is now here for

the rest of my lifetime, could that be true for you also? Firstly to begin something new or start something again after a previous experience then several factors may be required for you to act upon. We have already discussed one of those elements to be timing or may be being in the correct place at the correct time also helps. Do you have enough information or understanding of what it is, to be clear if it could be worth investing your time and energy? What would you have to let go of to be able to start? What are the potential benefits, could I do it, and do I really want to? Do I have the attitude of mind to

be able to make changes? Am I looking for a gentle form of exercise that could assist me in being less stressed and more free in my physical body? Questions, Questions ........ So here are a few answers that may assist you in being clearer if now is a good time to allow Tai Ji into your world. You will be introduced to an art that has been taught by an existing traditional lineage since 1800, that is 210 years of knowhow and experience. The system we use has been proven and stood the test of time.

Your teacher will support you in a non-judgement, caring, understanding way because he too has already walked the path. We believe new students bring an important quality to the experience - their unique physical body and a beginner’s mind. The gentle exercise you undertake will teach you how to relax, improve your balance, move your energy and assist you in improving your awareness, your concentration and your patience. With regular practice you will begin to see for yourself the improvements you have made and with time and application these will impact on, and in, your life in many positive ways.

Winging it! ... A view from the pilot’s seat ... by Chris Pickles Sol-aero Flyers

If you are considering serious touring, in larger aircraft, or perhaps flying as a career, then you will need the full PPL, it is accepted more or less worldwide, and you can add ratings to it, from a simple night visual to a full instrument qualification. Be warned though, you will need a stash of cash behind you, especially if you aim to own your own aircraft. Another area where the microlight has, and will always have, the advantage!! Until next time, Chocks away!!

instruments anyway. Also, a radiotelephony licence, not mandatory with the microlight licence, is with the full PPL. The course is a minimum of forty five hours, BUT … if you already have a microlight licence the CAA will credit you with twenty five of those hours, one of the most sensible decisions made by the CAA. It means you could do over half your course in a microlight with all the cost advantages that go with it. Although this option is realistically only open to those under 15 stone, as you need to consider your instructors weight.

into the thing in the first place!! Sometimes, bigger is better, and I do, occasionally, like splashing out and renting a four seater. Flying the family to the Balearics, sharing ATC with Captain Ryanair at international airports makes me feel important!! So, how much harder is the full PPL, and can you do it locally. Not much, and yes is the answer to the above, under the guidance of Ian Ramsey, a friend of mine with a lifetime of flying experience in aircraft ranging from microlights to airliners, with a lot of aerobatics thrown in! Ian instructs on a Piper Warrier from Almeria airport. He is qualified to teach the PPL, including the night and aerobatic ratings, as well as the written exams. The syllabus is pretty much the same as the microlight one, but with greater instrument appreciation due to the greater number of instruments!! The navigation training is more intensive but this is the function of nearly all of the additional

nybody who reads this column regularly will no doubt be tired of me banging on about the advantages of microlight aircraft over the more traditional Cessnas, Pipers, Robins, etc, favoured for decades by flying schools. Cheaper, faster, more involving, etc, etc, are phrases that are in danger of making me sound like a stuck record, and I still stand by them. But … there are some things that you cannot do in a microlight, either by law or design. Aerobatics are forbidden, even spinning. Night and instrument flying are a no no, and the only ratings you can add to your licence are instructor / examiner. Max. number of seats … two. Forget taking the wife and kids to Ibiza for the weekend! Ever wondered what a cicada looks like? Often heard but seldom seen this one was captured with photographer Ian’s new camera. Ian’s guests think they have noisy high tension electricity cables! Here’s some facts ... • Type: Bug of which there are some 3,000 species • Diet: Herbivore • Average life span in the wild: Up to 17 years • Size: 2.2cm to 5.5 cm • Group name: Cloud or Plague Cicadas are probably best known for their buzzing and clicking noises, which can be amplified by multitudes of insects into an overpowering hum. Some cicadas produce loud, noisy calls that can be heard up to 1.5 km away. Males produce this species-specific noise with vibrating membranes on their abdomens. The sounds vary widely and some species are more musical than others and although they may sound alike to humans, the insects use different calls to express alarm or attract mates. Several cultures, such as the ancient Chinese, regarded these insects as powerful symbols of rebirth.

I remember the day that we were sitting in the bedroom of my husband-to-be and packing the suitcase ready for him to move out, when to my surprise his Mum walked in the room with a bag full of medication ... I was astounded. He must have some terrible illness that he has not told me about I thought. It took me a while, but I finally plucked up the courage to ask what the medication was for. Well she started, this one is for when he has a cold, this one is for when he has a tummy ache, the blue ones are for when he has a headache, and so on. I am sorry I said, but he won’t be needing pills when he moves in with me. In my house we treat ourselves the natural way ... I am a true believer of natural medicine and since studying phytotherapy I am able to offer advice to my clients on which herbs can improve their well-being. Over the next few months I will be writing about some of the most popular vital herbs, their origins and benefits. At a time when there is a major concern over the ecological impact of antibiotics and synthesised chemical drugs, herbal medicine offers a chance to treat disease and encourage the return of good health in a way that is in accord with the needs of our environment, both internal and external. Moreover clinical trials into herbs such as Ginger, Gingko, Peppermint and St John’s Wort indicate that while their effect as medicines is directly comparable to conventional drugs, the herbal medicines have a very significantly lower incidence of side effects.

by Diana Dudás m.f.h.t. m.i.c.h.t. Herbal medicines therefore are not just useful substitutes for conventional medicines – they can be better medicines too. This does not mean that natural medicines are always the appropriate ones to use, though it does mean that when used carefully and sensibly they can bring real therapeutic benefits. Recent studies show that emotional state and immune function are interlinked, and there is a suggestion that under extreme stress – physical, mental or emotional, that herbal medicines work to support the body and strengthen our vital capacity to meet whatever challenges life throws at us – illness, bereavement, depression or simple exhaustion. Well known and well loved herbs like Elder, Rosemary, Sage and Yarrow have been used in herbal medicine for centuries. Other herbs such as Gingko are very recent arrivals in western herbal medicine, having been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years. And some herbs e.g. Garlic have now been so well researched that they are scientifically validated as medicines in their own right. So look forward to learning more about natural medicines such as Aloe Vera, Black Cohosh, Devils Claw, Ginkgo and Willow Bark. I am more than happy to accept emails with any health care concerns that you may have and advise you on holistic treatments and natural medicines that will be beneficial for your well-being. SEARCHING FOR TIGERS by Ian Farlow

Early morning April 2008, I am standing on the station in Delhi waiting for a train called The Golden Temple to take me to Sawai Madhopur in Rajasthan to find and film tigers in the wild. The station is completely packed, not with people who will catch the train, but by many people who live on the station - they prepare food and drinks which will be sold to people who are on the train. I am approached by an old lady who is begging, I don’t have Indian Rupees so give her a five dollar note, she takes it, thanks me and leaves. She comes back a few minutes later and starts to rant at me in a language I don’t understand, the man who is with me to make sure I get the correct train starts to laugh, I ask him what the problem is, he explains that the lady cannot use the money I have given her as she is not able to go into a bank to change it. I ask him to give her some Indian Rupees, which he does with great reluctance, and she goes away with a big smile on her face. The train pulls in and everyone who was on the tracks gets onto the platform which makes it more packed. I am hustled to a carriage, my baggage is brought to me and the door shuts. There is a knock on the door and the guard who has known me for some time from previous visits makes his acquaintance and offers me any help I might need - the first time I met him I asked how many stops to Sawai Madhopur, he said six. After the first stop he knocked on the door and held up five fingers, after the next stop he knocked on the door and held up four fingers and so on until we reached our destination. If I was to get the train tomorrow we would go through the same procedure. At the station I am met by my guide, Raj. I think he is the best tiger guide in the world. My driver, Rias and sons insist on meeting me as they do not trust the hotel to do things properly. The hotel jeep is allowed to carry my bags providing he follows our jeep. I am then given the news that we are in a great hurry as Raj knows of a tiger that is sleeping in a ravine and we need to get there as soon as possible. We go to the hotel, drop my bags off, quick change and we are off. We approach the ravine, when the tiger walks towards us we stop, the tiger walks within ten yards of us, it doesn’t even look up. It is a female with striking View of the Park colour and muscles - wherever you see a tiger in captivity it does not compare to a wild tiger. We drove around the tiger as Raj felt he knew where it was going, we parked and waited and ten minutes later it appeared on the top of a hill, it was creeping forward on all fours obviously hunting, it was hoping to catch a deer feeding about a hundred yards away. The tiger used our jeep to cover its approach as it crept towards the deer, they were startled by something and ran off, the tigress then gave up and walked into some reeds and was gone. The next morning we were out before the sun was up and travelled over some very rough terrain. We approached the entrance to a valley and Rias, who has the best eyes I have ever known a human to have, said he could see a tiger in the valley. I eventually focused on it as she started to walk towards us which we had not expected, she stopped about thirty yards from us and picked up a sambar deer which she had probably killed during the night. She then dragged it back to the top of the valley and was joined by two cubs which were about six months old, fortunately I was filming this and we were able to determine that one of the cubs Sambar Deer was a male which is important because he will be needed for the gene pool. The tigress held up the sambar carcass to let the cubs attack it, the male cub really did go for it and tried to bite the throat as he would have seen his mother do, she then let him have the carcass whilst she lay to the side and watched us watching her and her family. We stayed a few minutes and then left her alone, the pressure of us being there might have been too great for a young mother, these were her first cubs. I do believe that tigers in the wild now have to put up with human intrusion in their lives or they will disappear very quickly. Should you wish to see tigers then go soon or they could be gone forever. PAGE 16

The 500€ will pay to get the next 6 puppies vaccinated, chipped and passported for Holland. Puppy Rescue thank them very, very much! After featuring in the press Puppy Rescue’s ‘Dotty’ has been re-homed. APSA raised 540€ from the stalls and popular fashion show at the Arts and Craft Fair at the Almanzora Palace. They would like to thank all the helpers and stall holders and everyone who supported the event on Sunday 8th August and wish good luck to the organisers of the Palace Restoration Group who invited APSA to the event. For those without, demos will be given via the large screen and written handouts will be available for you to use at home. It will be in the first instance a 5 to 6 week short course. Sessions will start at 10am sharp – please be early. Afterwards there will be a coffee break, and the regular club meeting will be from around 11:15am. They would like some idea of how many are interested in attending so in the first instance please contact Fred Sheriff by e-mail: fj.sheriff@gmail.com or call David on 950 064 311. For non - members there is a small charge of 2€ per session, for which you will be welcome to stay for the regular club session afterwards. If you wish to have the benefits of full membership, the sessions are less. Those who have enrolled already will be kept up-to-date of any changes which might occur due to air travel problems for the course leader, for example. More details about the Club in general at www.alboxcc.com or by email alboxcc@gmail.com or call David as above.

On Saturday 24th July 2010 Bar La Union held an excellent music event, organised by Peter Dell and hosted by Paul and Brian Foster, Bar La Union owners. The bar was full to capacity. The host of entertainers gave their time free in aid of MACS and the standard and quality of the music was excellent. The entertainers were: Dave & Martin Sharp (multi talented twins who played several instruments), Brian Dee (singer), Doghouse (4 piece band) and Lew Mo Lew Trio (band). Several raffles and a "Pick Your Key" game took place. All who attended this event had a great time, their appreciation shown in the purchasing of many raffle tickets. Even the bar staff donated their wages for that night to MACS making the total amount raised a fantastic 595€. MACS would like to thank Peter Dell, Paul & Brian Foster and everyone who helped and participated in this event which helped raise these much needed funds for their cancer charity.

PUPPY RESCUE in SPAIN ... Dogs To Holland Appeal We currently have 134 dogs in our care and many of those are adults (over six months old). The vast majority of these are dogs who were not lucky enough to find homes as pups and therefore have spent their whole lives, so far, in our kennels. A few are the mums of the pups, abandoned along with them. The sad truth is that for a lot of these adult dogs, their chances of finding a home here are slim. They deserve so much more as they are all great dogs and desperate for somebody to love them. In February we managed to raise the funds to send 24 dogs to ‘Stichting Poor Animal’ a charity in Holland that specialises in re-homing dogs from other countries in Europe. This has been a very successful operation and to date 20 of the 24 dogs have already found permanent homes. Getting the dogs ready to go to Holland is costly as each one is required to have blood tests and vaccinations, etc. Plus, of course, the transporting costs. In all we will need to raise around 3,000 euros for each 24 dogs we send. Although this may not sound like a fortune, we still need to find it from somewhere. You can help by making a donation through our website, by bringing unwanted items into our shop or by attending one of our Fund Raising events. No matter how small your donation, it all counts. We thank you for your support. The Puppy Rescue Team.

BOB FOWLER Mojácar has lost another one of its old guard in the sudden and accidental death of long time resident Bob Fowler. Bob was a giant of a man in that he lived his life and dream by being in Spain. He had spent years looking after an invalid mother and following her death he gave up his very good job in England and came to Spain to start all over again. Each day he lived his dream. Bob started business here some 3 decades ago. In a note for history he created the first supermarket here which was later sold to Arthur Cox. Then Bob later moved into the car hire business (Mo Car) wherein he built up the largest car rental agency in the area with over 150 cars. You could go to a party and not notice him, Bob just avoided the limelight. He kept his life pared to essentials; a few facts, some good friends and a few glasses of “whi-key” each night. These quiet and unobtrusive friends are missed most because they never asked nor pestered anyone for anything but were always there like pillars of society, which he very much was … by his own quiet demeanour. ALL ABOUT CUCUMBERS Natural ways to solve some of life’s everyday problems.

Sinaloa

• Cucumbers contain most of the vitamins you need every day, just one cucumber contains Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium and Zinc.

• Feeling tired in the afternoon, pick up a cucumber. Cucumbers are a good

source of B Vitamins and Carbohydrates that can provide that quick pickme-up that can last for hours.

• Tired of your bathroom mirror fogging up after a shower? Try rubbing a cucumber slice along the mirror, it will eliminate the fog and provide a soothing, spa-like fragrance.

• Are grubs and slugs ruining your planting beds? Place a few slices in a small pie tin and your garden will be free of pests all season long. The chemicals in the cucumber react with the aluminium to give off a scent undetectable to humans but drive garden pests crazy and make them flee the area.

Celebrations & Hooping Sensations

• Looking for a fast and easy way to remove cellulite before going out or to the pool? Try rubbing a slice or two of cucumber along your problem area for a few minutes, the phytochemicals in the cucumber causes the collagen in your skin to tighten, firming up the outer layer and reducing the visibility of cellulite. Works great on wrinkles too!!!

• Want to avoid a hangover or terrible headache? Eat a few cucumber

slices before going to bed and wake up refreshed and headache free. Cucumbers contain enough sugar, B vitamins and electrolytes to replenish essential nutrients the body lost, keeping everything in equilibrium, avoiding both a hangover and headache!!

• Looking to fight off that afternoon or evening snacking binge? Cucumbers have been used for centuries and often used by European trappers, traders and explorers for quick meals to thwart off starvation.

• Don't have enough time to polish your shoes? Rub a freshly cut cucumber

over the shoe, its chemicals will provide a quick and durable shine that not only looks great but also repels water.

Tequila ... makes everybody more attractive!!!

• Out of WD40 and need to fix a squeaky hinge? Take a cucumber slice and rub it along the problematic hinge, and voilá, the squeak is gone!

• Stressed out and don't have time for massage, facial or visit to the spa? Cut up an entire cucumber and place it in a boiling pot of water, the chemicals and nutrients from the cucumber with react with the boiling water and be released in the steam, creating a soothing, relaxing aroma that has been shown to reduce stress in new mothers and college students during final exams.

• A slice of cucumber pressed to the roof of your mouth with your tongue for 30 seconds will eliminate bad breath, the phytochemcials will kill the bacteria in your mouth responsible for causing bad breath.

• Looking for a 'green' way to clean your taps, sinks or stainless steel? Take a slice of cucumber and rub it on the surface you want to clean, not only will it remove years of tarnish and bring back the shine, but it won't leave streaks and won't harm your fingers or fingernails while you clean.

• Using a pen and made a mistake? Take the outside of the cucumber and

slowly use it to erase the pen writing, also works great on crayons and markers that the kids have used to decorate the walls!!

Letter to the Editor Hi Tracey Just for a bit of fun I've replied to Petter's challenge in last month's issue. Here it is: I patiently perused the petty pennings of that prophet of the plume, Petter (perhaps a pseudonym?) and am pleased to partake of his pollicitation to pursue the precious P. Perhaps plumping for P is perspicacious, or possibly perverse and pervicacious, even pandering to prevarication, but pre-disposes pleasantly towards a piquant and pleasing piece of piffle. There, that 's enough Ps to keep even Batchelor's happy for a while! Hope he likes it, Well Done, Jos. Anybody else Regards, Jos Biggs going to have a go! - Ed

Pets of the Moment GENERAL ENQUIRIES 678 490 235 ODIN - is a happy and friendly dog and he loves to come and cuddle with you. He enjoys the company of his kennel mates and is very playful with them. He just loves to run and go for walks and we always let him have a good run in the large play area before taking him for walks to let him burn off steam. He’s just born to run! Odin enjoys life and loves to explore his surroundings by sniffing and checking everything out. It has been observed that he chased a cat when he saw one. Odin is a super friendly guy! TAIGA - is a very dear, shy dog with people and lacks confidence with them. However, she is very sociable with other dogs and we have no problem putting her in a variety of kennel and play groups. She needs a home that is quiet and with someone who would be patient with her. Though she can be frightened she has not shown any aggressive or threatening behaviour towards any of her caretakers. We hope that Taiga will be adopted by a loving person to give her the home she deserves. FREEWAY - is a young and active dog who really adores to be with people. Like his buddy Odin he enjoys his walks and a good run. He plays well with the other dogs in his playgroup and while generally on good terms with the others, he objects to dogs that are very pushy with him. Freeway is reported to be clean with regard to his toilet and generally well behaved in the home. At times Freeway shows some reaction towards other dogs when on the leash though the behaviour has not been noted when loose. He enjoys playing with people and dogs alike.

REDI - is of a terrier type nature: very active, attentive and intelligent. She is a bundle of energy and likes to be involved with all that is going on. She likes attention, is playful with both her canine friends as well as her caretakers. At time she may bark for attention. She is a bit wriggly when she doesn’t want to be held, but with a little guidance this lovely young girl will come along nicely. She will remain small.

WHY … WHY … WHY …

LUCAS - This endearing little fellow is a great favourite with many staff members. He is of a gentle nature, is friendly, enjoys everybody and everything, and gets along nicely with all his puppy playmates. Usually the little one of the bunch, it is so sweet to watch his little short legs pumping fast as he runs to catch up with the gang: “hey, wait for me!” Lucas is easy to handle and cuddly and would make a very nice pet. He will remain a small dog.

“UNTIL THERE ARE NONE ... RESCUE ONE”

The Battle of Britain In the summer and autumn of 1940, a battle for national survival was waged in the skies over Britain. Not only would this struggle, the first to be fought primarily in the air, decide the fate of the United Kingdom, but on it also rested the freedom of Europe and the outcome of the Second World War. By the end of June, 1940, the United Kingdom stood alone. The forces of Nazi Germany and her allies had conquered or dominated the rest of Europe from Norway to Sicily and the British Expeditionary Force and its allies had undergone a humiliating retreat back across the Channel under Operation Dynamo. In early July Adolf Hitler turned his attention to the British Isles, the last bastion of European democracy. His intention was to force the surrender of Britain through blockade, bombing, or, as a last resort, invasion. Victory in the Battle of Britain not only saved the United Kingdom from invasion, but also in the long-term saved Europe too. For the first time, Nazi Germany had been unable to impose its will on the rest of Europe through threat or military might, and its vaunted Luftwaffe had tasted defeat in battle. Britain would remain as a bastion of freedom and hope off the coast of occupied Europe. The cost of the Battle was high – of the nearly 3,000 aircrew who fought in the Battle of Britain 544 lost their lives and of the remainder a further 814 died before the end of the War. The Battle of Britain Monument on the Victoria Embankment, London, records the names of the 2,936 flyers from the 15 nations who flew for Britain in the Battle. Said Winston Churchill: "The gratitude of every home in our island, in our Empire and indeed throughout the world, except in the abodes of the guilty, goes out to the British airmen, who, undaunted by odds, unwearied in their constant challenge and mortal danger, are turning the tide of the world war by their prowess and devotion. "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few." 15 September is Battle of Britain Day and is marked by Services of Remembrance, including one at the Central Church of the RAF, St Clement Danes, in Strand, London and on an appropriate Sunday close to the date at Westminster Abbey.

WHY do we press harder on a remote control when we know the batteries are almost dead? WHY do banks charge a fee on 'insufficient funds' when they already know there is not enough money? WHY does someone believe you when you say there are four billion stars; but have to check when you say the paint is still wet? WHY doesn't Tarzan have a beard? WHY does Superman stop bullets with his chest, but ducks when you throw a revolver at him? WHOSE idea was it to put an 'S' in the word 'lisp'? IF people evolved from apes, why are there still apes? WHY is it that no matter what colour bubble bath you use the bubbles are always white? WHY is it that no plastic bag will open from the end on your first try? WHY do people constantly return to the refrigerator with hopes that something new to eat will have materialised? IN winter, why do we try to keep the house as warm as it was in summer when we complained about the heat?

Siobhan and Alan BAR LA MONTAÑA are leaving Bar La Montaña. They have had some really great times up there in the ‘sky’ and have certainly put El Campico on the map. They started the Farmer’s Market for which new stall holders are always welcome. They breathed new life into Jam Sessions with the help of their dear friend Jesse Alonso. These are going to carry on with the new owners who take over on the 1st of September. Siobhan says they are a lovely couple and she just knows they will do really well. They are set to take Bar la Montaña, one of the most beautiful locations in Almeria, to the next level. They want to thank all the friends they have made along the way and all the wonderful and talented musicians they have met. Ellen and Jim from Arriba Arriba, Pony Tail John, Tony Justice, Brendan O’Dee, Sean Grew, Mel Jay, The Blues Brothers, Driftwood, Terry Stevens, Dave the Sax, Graham Steele, Laurence, Fantastic Joint Session from England (Bish’s son’s band), New Life, More than Two, JC, Funky Pete and Folky Pete, Rich Lucas, Tom and Emily Lee, German Denis, Bob the Drums, Esteban from Bedar, Phil Hadleigh, Kay Francis who did the debut gig at the Bar, Young Danny, Kayleigh, Mario from the Zambra in Turre, Furniture Roy, Bruce Sax, Banjo John, Mandolin John ... phew the list goes on for miles. Also great big thank yous to Mal who worked with them like one of the family, to Lauren, Siobhan’s side kick and whom she misses terribly and a great big hug and a kiss to Suzie, Siobhan’s ‘new sister’ who has worked alongside them from the beginning and is loved to pieces. So what is their next venture to be? Could it be a bar on the playa or in the countryside again? We are to watch this space!

AND WHY … WHY do people keep running over a string a dozen times with their vacuum cleaner, then reach down, pick it up, examine it, then put it down to give the vacuum one more chance? IS there ever a day that mattresses are not on sale? WHY is it that whenever you attempt to catch something that's falling off the table you always manage to knock something else over? HOW come you never hear father-in-law jokes?

The statistics on sanity is that one out of every four persons is suffering from some sort of mental illness. Think of your three best friends - if they're okay, then it's you!

TIGER - long-haired grey-mix female, 9 yrs of age, spayed. Tiger’s chip/passport tells us her date of birth is 15.5.2001 however her owner cannot be traced and she was brought into the shelter. We cannot be sure what has happened to Tiger, she was naturally anxious at first of her new surroundings, and would put us in our place if we tried to coax her. But she is obviously feeling more settled now and will permit us the odd stroke, be it on her terms! We feel sure under that stern exterior lies a mellow pussycat waiting to reveal her softer side. Tiger requires a forever home that offers her patience and stability, in a quiet household without other pets and without children. If you would like further information on TIGER please contact: Diane 664 246 728, Ruth 637 817 982 or Tracy 649 237 582. POPPY - tabby/white shorthaired female, spayed. D.O.B: 2004 Poppy’s owners had her from a kitten, she is now 6 years old. Fairly recently they sold up and moved on, however Poppy obviously didn’t picture in their new plans, and they left her behind. She was in an area of holiday-homes, where people come and go, no permanent residents, so was surviving on occasional scraps from holiday-makers as they came and went. There is lot of campo in the surrounding area, where territorial ferals would give Poppy a hard time. One couple, who had known Poppy’s owners, were absolutely dismayed when they came out for two weeks holiday, to discover she had been abandoned and was looking a shadow of her former self; consequently poor Poppy came into our care. A girl who, despite her ordeal, remains affectionate and enjoys human company. If you would like further information on POPPY please contact: Diane 664 246 728, Ruth 637 817 982 or Tracy 649 237 582. Tel: 950 475 110 ROBIN HOOD This film excellently portrayed by Russell Crowe starring in the lead role and directed by Ridley Scott follows the story of how an archer in the service of King Richard the Lionheart came to be known as Robin Hood, the famous archer and outlaw of English folklore. Beginning after the death of King Richard at the siege of Chalus Chabrol, the film follows Robin on his rise to infamy among the English barons and the newly crowned King John featuring historically accurate characters such as Sir William Marshall and grounded in reality (in a similar way to Gladiator, also a Ridley Scott film), this is not Robin Hood as you have ever seen him before, rather the making of the legend we have come to know him as now.

A popular variation of Sudoku is to add some arithmetic on top of the basic rules. In Killer Sudoku the standard grid is divided up into collections, in the top left square of the collection is the sum of the numbers that go in the squares making up the group. This lets you solve squares in new ways, in the simplest case you could have a collection of only two squares, if the sum is 3 then you know one square is 1 and the other 2, or if the sum was 17 then they must be 8 and 9. So the sum is giving extra information about the numbers in the squares quite apart from the standard 'number unique to a group' coming from Sudoku. A key starting point is to look for collections with a low average (e.g. a total of 6 for 3 squares, average 2, means can only be {1, 2, 3}) or a high average (e.g. a total of 30 for 4 squares, average 7.5 means can only be {6,7,8,9}). 32

“Baza Barry” says the Negratin lake is still fishing well with carp to 5lbs and barbell to 2lbs. “David P” has fished the Cortijo Grande lake a couple of times recently without being spotted by ‘him with his council hat on’ and caught quite a few small carp to 1lb. David says there are bigger beasts in there that must go to at least 5lbs. Lake Argos, near Calasparra is fishing well with bags over 120lbs coming out. Smaller bags are being caught at Lake Blanca also in Murcia but the sizes of the fish are bigger. The River Segura in Murcia town is fishing well with a recent club match angler winning with about 60lbs. Bread seems to be the winning bait with paste coming second. Some concrete pegs are becoming unfishable with reeds taking over. I have details of a good spot on the River Segura in Murcia, close to Calasparra which holds some big fish. See me for more details. Even with all the rain we’ve had this past year and many million litres of water imported from

Negratin, the Cuevas de Almanzora lake is still less than 5% full, where does all that water disappear to? I’ve had a report from “Big Steve” about some 35lb carp coming out of a lake called Bandulara or Bandolero whic h is new and situated somewhere between Motril and Granada. Apparently the lake was filled and stocked from the dam at Lake Beznar which still has some 35lb carp in it. These were seen spawning only a few weeks ago by “Motril Barry”. Big carp are taking 20mm halibut pellets. If you live anywhere near Mazarron a new fishing club has started in the area and I hear it’s not about match fishing but putting like minded people in touc h. Contact Alan at: anglerstogether@gonuts4free.com or phone 968 570 876. The next meetings will be held on Friday 10th September at 12.00pm at Mary’s Bar in Campoverde (north of Pilar de la Horadada) and on Saturday 11th September at 12.00pm at Los Galayos Bar, opposite the beach front at Puerto de Mazarron. or a boat in Spain. (2) Or a similar license from any Spanish region, i.e. with an Andalucian beach or boat license you can fish from any beach or a boat in Spain. I am happy to give a copy of the law in Spanish and English to anyone as it is my opinion that a percentage of local police and Guardia Civil will not know about the rule. It’s best to be able to stick the rules under their noses rather than receive a fine and have to fight against the decision. This r uling does not affect Andalucian coarse fishing licenses and nothing has changed in that respect, i.e. you have to do the 24 hour course or see me. Things to take note of when coarse fishing in Murcia. Like Andalucia, the police are getting stricter and now require your insurance and photographic evidence of your identity - passport or driving license. Some anglers fishing on the Blanca lake were recently checked for the type of hook being used and a barbless hook is apparently required. I don’t know if this is at Blanca only or if the rule covers the whole of Murcia. I have made enquiries and will let you know when, or if, I find the answer. As far as I know none of the ‘Capitanos’ have been out in the recent choppy seas we’ve been getting. “London Bill” has been targeting dorada this week and he’s had a few to 2lbs. Most have come from the Mojácar’s rocks just before Garrucha. Scott and brother Alex are here

on a three week holiday from the UK and are hoping to get out and do some fishing. (see photo below).

Alex ... when he was here last time caught a few fish including these pandora and comber.
