The early morning nip in the air did not deter anyone from making sure it was going to be a great event. With fairy lights and Christmas carols, the market was soon buzzing. Thanks go to the following for their fabulous raffle prize donations; Connexions, Home Sweet Home, Elegance by Katie, Alice’s Bar, Etticut, Alison’s Keep Fit, Peter McCardle, Avalon Funeral Plan and Pascal Chevalier Coiffeur - really did appreciate your generosity. The total raised by all the Dames stalls was a staggering 3721.58€. A big thanks goes to the general public for their support, all monies raised will be distributed among local charities in 2015.
On Tuesday December 9th, 58 members and friends of Turre Dames enjoyed a wonderful lunch cooked by Maria and José at El Pago in Turre. A free raffle was held for everyone and a donated Christmas Hamper raffled off to buy sweets and chocolates for the underprivileged children in Turre for Christmas. Val Carrington told some amusing anecdotes about Christmas and the afternoon was rounded off by Doreen Woolton who had everyone in stitches with her hilarious jokes.

useful Citizen’s Advice ureau Spain sends out the B following: ‘The Spanish Tax Agency has sent out letters to owners of properties in over a 1,000 towns in Spain, informing them of the start of proceedings (‘expediente’), regarding non-declared alterations to the c onstruction of their property. This could either be an amplification of the square meters, or a reform that changed the registered use of the property (former shed or stable converted into living quarters for example)...’ Meanwhile, some properties are paying too much IBI. A report in Hoy on some properties in Extremadura who had been paying 100 times over the odds on their rates. After everything else has been said about the justice system in

The article notes that ‘opinion polls on bullfighting are rare in Spain. The last time the government’s CIS public opinion research body asked about the practice was in 1995, when 45.5% said they were in favour and 39.9% against...’. A study on the Spanish public administrations, compared with other European countries, shows that things are not going too badly. The Spanish health system, for example, is the best in Europe and our life expectancy is the highest. Allergens in our food? making, but the Almería to Málaga A7 coastal motorway will finally be finished next year. It hasn’t been an easy motorway to build, the sharp cliffs and unstable terrain has made the motorway a slow and costly a ffair to build. At the time of going to press the Castillo de Baños (Polopos) – Albuñol bit was set to open at the end of December in a lavish ceremony, the 15 kilometre stretch has cost a whopping 270 million euros. The 6km bit between La Gorgoracha (A-44) – P untalón (Motril), is due to open in April 2015 at a cost of 120 million euros. The 10.5km road between Carchuna – Castell de Ferro, is due to open in September 2015 at a cost of 125 million euros. Garrucha townhall has announced that it intends to repave and update the paseo marítimo after it presented a budget for 2015. The seafront promenade will have over €200,000 spent on it, mainly tarmac and repainting all the parking bays. The money is coming from the Diputación, county council. Officially known as the Paseo del Malecón, most of the work will be concentrated at the port end where

recent works have left the area in a lamentable state of patchwork. The intention is to tidy it all up and seamlessly integrate the new bits into the old. As usual, the town hall plenary session was another farce with the leader of the opposition being thrown out over a q uestion about the “missing millions” the Mayor is alleged to have lost, misappropriated or kept (a Judge is looking into the affair) and the rest of his party stiffly marching out in protest of their leaders fate. There’s a photo of the paseo marítimo in the late 30s on David’s blog http://www.davidjackson.info/ blog/2014/12/18/garrucha-to-update-its-paseo-maritimo/. Some of those old buildings are still there! The government has confirmed that it has no plans any more to build a large AVE station at Vera, as was the original plan, and although the station is still “probably” going to be built, it will be a simple platform affair rather than a full blown train station as was originally planned. The announcement came during a series of meetings with industry leaders in the province held in the middle of December by Manuel Niño, Sec Gen of Infrastructures. The original articles of surrender by the Moorish r esidents of A lmería to the Christian armies in the 15th century have been found (they were lost? Stuck in a box somewhere it seems) by Ideal newspaper and restored by them. The Capitulaciones as they are known, were negotiated between the Islamic ruler of the city of Almería and the Catholic Kings Isabel & Fernando and signed by all parties on the 26th of D ecember 1489. The treaty handed over the city and all its lands to the Catholics in exchange for a promise that those Muslims who so wanted to could continue living there, a promise that was originally honoured until Isabel decided to stamp down on the moriscos, as they were known, and force their conversion. Ideal newspaper released a series of articles on these fascinating documents ahead of the annual boxing day c ommemoration in the city. A medical helipad has opened in Tabernas, the eighth in the province at a cost of €46,874. The idea b ehind these helipads is ambulances attending critical accidents can radio for a medical helicopter to transport the patient to the main hospital in Almeria, then meet the helicopter at the helipad and transfer the patient, saving at least a half hour v ehicle trip to Almería. During the early part of 2015, three new mini helipads are due to be completed, at Albox, Ohanes & Nijar. All are being financed by the Junta de Andalucía.

The Mojacar branch of the RBL in Spain are pleased to announce that the 2014 Poppy Appeal raised €5,549.75, which is €161.43 more than the previous year. The branch wishes to thank all the businesses and collectors for their support which allows the RBL to carry out welfare work here in Spain. The photo shows the management team of Iceland store in Vera being presented with a certificate on behalf of all their staff and customers for raising the magnificent sum of €2,586.47 at the store by Andrew Richardson, Poppy Appeal Organiser and branch Chairman. The Mojacar branch would also like to thank the management, staff and customers of Bar Oasis in Palomares for raising €388 by holding a table top sale. MACS Shop Grand Opening in Huercal Overa The much anticipated grand opening of the MACS shop in H uercal Overa took place on December 15, 2014. Dignitaries in attendance included the Mayor of Huercal Overa, Domingo Fernández Z urano, and Alejandro Guerrero Salvador, the Honorary British Consul of Almería. Huercal Overa was the first ayuntamiento to provide a free opening license and administration for a MACS shop. A dditional support was graciously provided by FACE Arboleas, Mojácar Masons, Voss Estates, Dames in Turre and architect Juan Antonio Garcia. Lorraine Cundy and Sue Pearce from FACE (Fundraising in Arboleas Caring for Everyone) were at the opening to present MACS with a check for 500€. MACS, the Mojácar Area Support Group, is an all volunteer organisation designed to provide support for cancer patients and their loved ones. The shop has a relaxation room to provide private Patient Survivor and Care Giver meetings. In addition to p roviding much needed emotional support for patients and their loved ones, MACS also offers a free loan of hospital aids and other n eeded supplies such as wigs and bras. MACS can provide help with translators and transportation. Grief counselling is also available. The shop offers sales of clothing and goods and is open from 10am until 2pm, Monday to Friday. The shop is located at 151A Carretera Estación, Huercal Overa, across the street from the bus station. The new office is staffed by 18 community volunteers. Kim Chatland is the local manager. Those interested in volunteering should call 634 328 334. Those seeking cancer support should call 634 656 555. Because of the o pening ceremonies, the shop was only opened for 90 minutes instead of the usual four hours. N evertheless, MACS raised 347.73€ and would like to thank all those who made the opening a great success.
