Meet Allora’s New Pharmacist
On Monday Jeff Mahomedy walked into the Allora Pharmacy to take up his new posting. Customers and staff immediately enjoyed his crazy sense of humour. Fully qualified and previously working at Eidsvold, Childers and Hervey Bay Jeff is very excited to be part of Allora he feels that he’ll fit right in! Since arriving from South Africa on Boxing Day 2012 all Jeff wanted to be was a Bus Driver so that’s what he did in Brisbane while studying to be a Pharmacist. As you can see by his first-day outfit Jeff enjoys horse riding and is hoping that he can find a tame, large horse he can ride on his day off.

Have your say on the ‘blueprint’ that guides the region’s vibrant arts scene
Southern Downs Regional Council is calling on the local arts community and interested residents to provide feedback on the 2021 draft Public Art Policy and its supporting Public Art Procedure. Southern Downs Councillor Marco Gliori is an avid supporter of the arts and believes that the place making benefits of public art contributes greatly to a community’s mental health. “Cultural development is an integral part of a community’s identity which contributes to its growth, wellbeing and cohesion,” Councillor Gliori said. “We are living in extraordinary times and people long to find joy and belonging closer to home where they feel safe and celebrated. “Public art enriches our built and natural environments, creates a sense of place and offers the opportunity to gather knowledge of our cultural heritage. “And what a bonus for visitors to our region to gain an enhanced understanding of our local history and culture through well-placed interpreted public art!”
Councillor Marco Gliori.
The 2021 draft Public Art Policy aims to establish Council’s role in arts and cultural development and will provide a vision and framework through which to identify key opportunities and strategies to drive public art installation on the Southern Downs. “This policy will be the blueprint that guides Council’s decision-making on the selection of public art and the strategic allocation of resources and we need the community’s feedback,” Councillor Gliori said. Feedback can be directed to Belinda Armstrong, SDRC Community Services Coordinator at Belinda. Armstrong@sdrc.qld.gov. au. Submissions close 5pm Friday 30 July 2021.

Visitors Impressed With The Clifton Museum
Local motoring enthusiast Doug Partington seen here with his 1912 Model T Ford.
Clifton Museum was visited by members of Model T Owners Queensland last week. The 1912 and 1913 Model T Fords came from near and far, with members hailing from Allora, Toowoomba and Brisbane. According to Hagerty, an insurance agency that specialises in covering vintage cars, the value of 1912 and 1913 Ford Model
T cars ranges from $8,100 for one in fair condition to $46,900 for one in ‘concours’ condition. Model T Owners Queensland was formed in 2004 by a small group of Queensland Model T Ford enthusiasts. It has a large and active membership base, which is open to all persons with a passion for the venerable Ford Model T.

Frostbite Rally Rides Into Allora
This weekend will see at least 120 motorcycles converge on the town. Coming from all across southern Queensland and beyond, the Rally gets underway on Saturday at the Allora Showgrounds. Conducted by the Historical Motor Cycle Club of Queensland the rally is quite a spectacle. A mystery ride will depart at 1.30pm on Saturday with Sunday’s rally departing from 9am. Long and short routes are planned with the short
routes for motorcycles from the 1915 to 1930 era. It’s hoped that a route may take in a trip to Clifton. Spectaculars are more than welcome and Covid rules will be in place so be sure to check in first. The better viewing times are Saturday from 9am and Sunday from about 10 to 10.30 when the riders are together for morning tea. However locals may hear the roar of the bikes around Allora this Thursday and Friday for riders arriving early.

Faulty water meters to be replaced
The phased Water Meter Renewal Program will be rolled out in the Southern Downs Regional Council region between now and early August. More than 700 faulty and dated water meters will be replaced in many areas including Allora, Killarney, Yangan, Pratten, Leyburn and Warwick. A Council spokesperson encouraged residents to play their part in reducing the disruption to their property during the program by ensuring meters are safely and easily accessible. Water meters are placed on individual property boundaries and Council advises that meters should be free from debris, grass, garden mulch, soil and other obstacles. “A quick review and tidy up of meter locations will ensure the contractors can quickly and efficiently install new meters with minimal disruption to the property’s occupants,” the spokesperson said. “A number of meters
across the region are reaching the end of their useful life, so replacing them is necessary to ensure accurate meter readings and water consumption charges. “Residents affected by the works will be notified via a letter box drop and Council will endeavour to complete the upgrades with as little disruption as possible to normal water supply.” Works will be conducted during business hours.

Bore drilling and pumping tests in Cunningham Alluvieum
Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) is investigating an alternative water supply for the local region. Residents whose properties adjoin public roadways proposed for bore drilling and pumping tests are advised that work will be carried out for test drilling and pumping tests through July and August. One of the areas of investigation is to determine the feasibility of accessing Council’s 100ML/a groundwater entitlement in the Cunningham Alluvium and identify additional availability of groundwater sources to supplement region’s water supply. To date investigations undertaken by Council have identified five sites including WheatvalePlains Road, Toolburra Plains Road, Condamine River Road (Pratten) as well as decommissioned SDRC bore sites at Lyndhurst Lane
and Gray Lane. The results of the drilling and testing program will confirm the extent to which the bores could possibly contribute to the Warwick water supply system. Bore drilling will comprise a pilot bore and possibly a monitoring bore to a depth of approximately 20m below ground level, terminating at the base of the alluvium. Should final investigations indicate that a viable and sustainable bore supply system can be developed, works would likely be progressed to construct and commission these bores. All the affected residents will be contacted individually prior to commencement of work at each site. Council thanks the community for their patience whilst this valuable body of work is carried out as part of Council’s ongoing work to ensure water security for our region.

Defibrillator kit for St Marks Church in Warwick
Maranoa MP David Littleproud has announced the Anglican Parish of Warwick will make use of a $2,500 grant under the Stronger Communities Programme to purchase a defibrillator. “This is great news for the Warwick community and the parishioners who are working hard behind the scenes to provide affordable facilities to the community,” Mr Littleproud said. “The funding will support the purchase of a defibrillator kit for use by the many parish and community groups who utilise the facilities, as well as church services, baptisms, weddings and funerals held within the
historically significant St Mark’s Church. “The kit may help save a life and will contribute to a vibrant and viable community in Warwick. “Regional communities are the heart of this country and I want to make sure that small capital projects are funded and the community gets exactly what it needs.” Round 6 of the Stronger Communities Programme has seen $150,000 in Federal Government funding made available to Maranoa community groups. 14 projects were funded across Maranoa in this round. Project grants range from $2500 to $20,000 to help bolster rural communities.

Road works on North Branch Road, Goomburra
Upcoming works in Goomburra will address drainage and flooding issues along North Branch Road to make the road more accessible and safer for users during wet weather events. Southern Downs Regional Council expects to start the two-week construction project during August 2021, however this is subject to change and weather dependent. To ensure public safety during works, a Council spokesperson said local traffic will operate under controlled arrangements and restricted speed limits. “At the forefront of our mind is the safety of
road users and our staff during construction,” the spokesperson said. “Council wants to remind road users and the community that following the directions of on-site officers and signage will ensure works can be completed within achievable timeframes. “We also want to assure local residents in the area that we will do our best to minimise the delays and disruptions to their daily lives and they will still have access to and from their properties. Standard construction hours will be between 6.30am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.

Warriors Chasing Sixth Successive Win
The 102nd Toowoomba Rugby League premiership emerges from its mid-season hiatus this weekend with all teams on deck to contest Round 12, the 2021 Indigenous Round, with the competition now turning towards the finals series that commences on August 28th. With just seven matches to go until the fanfare of finals fever the likes of Highfields, Goondiwindi, Valleys, Warwick & Wattles appear on course to feature in the business end of the season, Dalby and Gatton also laying claims. Last Sunday saw the Highfields Eagles emerge as commanding 34 – 18 victors from the A Grade midseason Madsen-Rasmussen Final against the Goondiwindi Boars at Toowoomba’s Herb Steinohrt Oval. The Boars have paraded as the glamour line-up of the first Round of the Hutchinson Builders A Grade competition, undefeated for their initial nine season fixtures until halted by Travis Burns’ Wattles Warriors 30 – 22 in Round
10 at Goondiwindi in a titanic clash. It was a tremendous effort by the Warriors, and while the Boars were full strength Wattles without Ty Gardner and Dale Perkins on representative duty. While the Eagles may be celebrating the significant silverware addition to their trophy cabinet, the Boars are still standing tall on the top rung of the premiership ladder with 19 competition points, ahead of Highfields and Wattles on 16 points. Local league heroes the ‘Railway Hotel, Allora’ Wattles Warriors top graders have a challenge on their hands this Sunday as they regroup after a weekend off to step up to the plate against the Dalby Diehards on Dalby sacred turf. Dalby can boast plenty of talent, two being Toowoomba representatives, halfback Dylan Tayler and skipper/front-rower Xavier Manley who’s a former

Player coach Travis Burns is certainly not expecting any easy accomplishments at the Diehards den, but Wattles’ form of late has impressed with five consecutive successes in recent weeks to be unlucky to have missed a place on the Madsen-Rasmussen starting grid. Wattles conquests among those five scalps include competition front runners Goondiwindi and Valleys, so they have shown the ability to claim a starting place in the season decider. After a week’s spell Wattles will be at full strength and will start favourites but punters will be aware of what the gritty Diehards are capable of, especially at home. Have your say on the Dairy Code of Conduct
The public submission period for the first review of the Dairy Industry Code of Conduct is now open. Member for Maranoa and Minister for Agriculture David Littleproud said the Australian Government was seeking input from dairy farmers, processors, industry representative bodies, government agencies and consumer organisations. “The Dairy Code of Conduct was introduced on 1 January 2020 to address market imbalances in the dairy industry,” Minister Littleproud said. “In this first review, feedback is required to make sure the code is operating as intended. “The code is an important part of the dairy industry, and
we want to make sure it is working positively for Australian farmers and businesses. “The idea of the code was to address serious imbalances in bargaining power at each level of the dairy supply chain. “It’s important that we do our bit as a government to ensure a fair go for dairy farmers. “Creating a stronger business environment, healthier market competition and more competitive supply chains means fairer prices for farmers.” Public submissions can be lodged from now until 15 August 2021 at the Have Your Say website.
Fast Facts: • The Dairy Code Review Reference Group (the Reference Group) will support the first review of the Dairy Code of Conduct. • The Reference Group is comprised of farmer and processors representatives from across the eight dairy regions. • The establishment of a
mandatory code was a recommendation of the ACCC’s 2018 Dairy Inquiry Final Report. • The code and its requirements can be viewed on the Federal Register of Legislation at www. legislation.gov.au/Details/ F2019L01610

SOLUTIONS Mum’s birthday party
On Saturday Mum had a birthday party for her 40th birthday at Jamworks. There were lots of people there and it was very hard to find Mum because of that. Grandpa and Nana T came down from Hervey Bay and Nana and Papa Kev came from Townsville. They stayed at our property in their caravan. They all drove the long way round to avoid Brisbane. Nana did all the decorations including a lollie bar and old photos of Mum hung up on fairy lights. Mum and Dad had a special announcement that Mum is going to have another baby. We don’t know if it is a boy or girl yet but I hope it has autism just like me. When we got back from the party we were very tired and went straight to sleep. When we woke up the next day we had to go to Toowoomba for our friend Jake’s birthday party. And also for William’s appointment with the orthopaedic surgeon. We got there at about 12 noon which was just enough time to get Jake a present at Rebel sport and also to get life jackets for William and I so we can go kayaking. Jake’s party was the best party ever because we got to go ten pin bowling, play laser tag and arcade games. William’s doctor appointment went really well and his broken arm is now all better. CROSSWORD
One morning three country kids were riding to school when a motorist drove past and was surprised to see the kids all riding the one horse. “Hey there!” he yelled. “Any room for me up there?” The kid at the back lifted up the horse’s tail and yelled back “You can hop in the boot if you like!”
