A cracking good Cambooya Campdraft

The weather was warm and the crowd was hot last weekend for the Cambooya Campdraft, where community spirit was high and a good time was had by all. Cambooya Campdraft Association President Dane Bateman said it was a very successful weekend. “It was really good,” Mr Bateman said. “Two of our committee people won drafts. “Andrew Pocock won the Novice Campdraft, his first win in fifteen years of doing it.” On Saturday night, an auction was held to help raise funds to cover the cost of having licensed paramedics for the event. The canteen also raised money for the community, with volunteers helping to fundraise for Back Plains State School. Mr Bateman said he wanted to thank all the volunteers and sponsors for making the Cambooya Sam Campbell of Goomburra (on the right most horse) took out the Frank Allport Memorial Campdraft possible. Local win in photography competition

Westbrook’s Margaret Kebble has taken out the Alwyn Kucks Memorial Award at the 2021 Heritage Bank Photographic Awards for “I will get it right.” This award is only open to entrants residing within a 50km radius of Toowoomba. Now in their 33rd year, the Heritage Bank Photographic Awards are a renowned competition in Australian photography circles. They are open to all Australian residents, with no experience or qualification restrictions in place. Mrs Kebble said the idea for the photo formed with her five-years-old grey ringneck Enza, who has a black and white collar, and her husband Robin. “It was an idea we got when our bird really liked our Rubik’s Cube,” Mrs Kebble said. She said Enza was infatuated with picking at the Rubik’s Cube, so for the photo she made a cube for her husband’s head and used Photoshop to turn his face into segments of a cube. Mrs Kebble said it was “quite a surprise to win” and she almost did not even realise it. “The email went to junk mail so I didn’t see it,” Mrs Kebble said. “I got a second email which said the opening night had been cancelled due to COVID with social distancing and so on but right at the end it said congratulations again for winning.” For winning the Alwyn Kucks Memorial Award, Mrs Kebble Margaret Kebble, Westbrook - “I will get it right” received $2,000, a $100 voucher for Owen Camera House and a subscription to Australian Photography magazine. Get outside and walk Car thefts up steeply this September For Queensland Walks Month, Cr Melissa Taylor from Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) is encouraging residents to get out and be active.

How about a walk in Lions Park Hodgson Vale (above) or Sister Kenny Park (below) in Nobby?

“The mornings are slowly warming up and with more daylight each day, now is the perfect time to get those steps up,” Cr Taylor said. “In our regional areas we continue to invest in footpath upgrades and maintenance through our annual programs and ‘The Change Project’ has many activities available to residents of all abilities. Or if you prefer bike, there are trails and paths which continue to be extended each year.” Cr Taylor is the TRC chair of the Regional Active and Public Transport Advisory Committee, of which Queensland Walks Executive Officer Anna Campbell is also a member. Ms Campbell said Queensland Walks Month is a free, online celebration of walking, running, rolling and strolling. “The 2021 Queensland Walks Month theme ‘Celebrate Walking: Every Body, Every Place’ is designed to focus on walking for all ages, abilities, and in all places in Queensland,” she said. “You can participate individually, or you can enter as a team, or get your workplace involved to help motivate each other to walk more. “Once you’ve registered, we want you to share your walking adventures on the Queensland Walks website, by posting photos, videos, or your walking stories, to go into the draw to win a range of great prizes. Other local government areas (LGAs) in Queensland have also had sharp increases over the same period quarterly period comparison, with Ipswich recording a 55.3 per cent increase, Cairns an 88.3 per cent increase and Townsville a 124.5 per cent increase. In other LGAs, the difference has been smaller, with Brisbane recording an increase of 19.7 per cent, Gold Coast an increase of 16.4 per cent and the amount in Logan decreasing by seven per cent. Opposition Leader David Crisafulli attributes the rise to the State Government’s handling of young criminals. “Youth crime is ripping apart communities,” Mr Crisafulli said. “The Opposition has consistently called for the state government to restore breach of bail as an offence for young criminals. “Repeat offenders should not be allowed to put the safety of Queenslanders at risk. Shadow Police Minister Dale Last said youth crime has increased 183 per cent in Queensland since 2015. In Queensland, the most commonly stolen vehicle is the Holden Commodore 2006-13 followed by Ford Ranger PX 2011+ and Toyota HiLux 2005-11 and 2015+. New vaccination hub at Clifford Gardens

An undercover carpark vaccination clinic at Clifford Gardens Shopping Centre is now open, giving residents greater access to the COVID-19 vaccine. Health Minister Yvette D’Ath said the new centre in a converted undercover carpark at Clifford Gardens Shopping Centre will offer increased capacity in response to growing demand for vaccinations across the state. “As more Queenslanders come forward for vaccination and supply increases, we’re able to move to larger venues,” Minister D’Ath said. “Many of our current vaccination sites are scalable, meaning they are able to ramp up daily capacity as more supply becomes available and we’re able to administer more and more vaccines.” The new vaccination centre opened on Monday of this week and replaced the clinic at Baillie Henderson Hospital for community vaccinations. “We’re excited to be able to enhance access to the free COVID-19 vaccine in our regional communities such as Toowoomba, as well as Rockhampton, Gladstone, Cairns, Townsville and Mackay,” Minister D’Ath said. “The new site will offer 22 vaccination bays, increasing from the eight vaccination bays currently available at Baillie Henderson Hospital.” Darling Down Health spokesperson Annette Scott said it was important people continued to register their interest to receive the vaccine. “This new centre will initially cater for existing bookings and will progressively ramp up as vaccine supply increases to administer up to 1,500 doses a day,” Ms Scott said. Beware of Madagascan Fireweed

The invasive plant Madagascan Fireweed (Senecio madagascariensis) has been spotted from Westbrook to Nobby, causing concern for primary producers as it competes with pasture and is toxic to livestock. Fireweed is a restricted invasive plant under the under the Queensland Government’s Biosecurity Act 2014. This means landholders have a General Biosecurity Obligation (GBO) to manage the biosecurity risks associated with invasive plants and animals that are under their control and that they know about or should reasonably be expected to know about. Fireweed generally begins to become visible in the landscape in around August. It has been burnt into the mind of many farmers for a few years now. It is usually a weed of beef and dairy pasture and even light infestations can produce one million seeds per hectare. Wild turnip can also be mistaken for Madagascan Fireweed, as it grows as a yellow flowering field. All senecio plants have a similar ability to set seed and produce pyrrolizidine alkaloids which are toxic to livestock, particularly cattle and horses, causing chronic liver damage. The damage to the liver is cumulative over the life of the animal, it is irrerversible and no treatment is available. Fireweed is preferentially avoided by livestock, therefore poisoning is more likely to occur if there is a shortage of other feed on offer. Hutchinson clinches fourth Leyburn title

A desperate last effort clinched a fourth outright win for Warwick Hutchinson at the Historic Leyburn Sprints on Sunday. After duelling all weekend, Hutchinson trailed rival Brett Bull until he crossed the line on his ninth and last run around the 1.0 kilometre Leyburn street course. Bull, driving a Van Dieman single-seater, booked his best time of 42.365 seconds on the ninth run and with a margin of 0.189s looked set to win his first Col Furness Memorial Trophy. But Hutchinson, next in line for the start, flung his Mazda rotary-powered OMS28 around the track in 42.271s to claim his first Sprints victory since 2013. “This trophy is close to my heart. I’ve been up here several times and it’s good to be back,” he said. “Brett was in front most of the weekend and it was a really close battle. That was very satisfying to beat him on the very last run.” In the Historic classes, Brad Stratton set the fastest time of 55.225s in a 1962 Elfin Mallala sports car. Thomas Rath, driving a Suzuki Swift, won the Ann Collins Memorial Junior Award for setting the most consistent times among drivers aged between 14 and 17.
