In the individual 3 kilometre race, Kyrna finished in fifth place line, but as athletes disabilities are factored into the final result, after the percentages were calculated she finished sixth. Her medals came in the team event, where she secured a gold, and in the time trial, where she finished third. Tomas finished in third place in his age group, then finished fifth overall. Shadow Health Minister Ros Bates put the blame on the Queensland Government rather than the hospital staff.
The new Toowoomba Hospital is expected to open in the second half of 2027. For some, the opening of the new hospital cannot come quickly enough as the emergency department of the current hospital struggles to see to patients in a timely manner.
“Increasing connectivity and bridging the digital divide is a core focus of the Albanese Government and we will continue to work closely with industry partners to improve access to communications for all Australians,” Ms Rowlands said.

“These dedicated men and women are working double shifts week-in-week-out,” Ms Bates said.
Federal Minister for Communications Michelle Rowlands said the change should increase digital access for vulnerable Australians and builds on Telstra’s decision last year to make all local and national calls from all payphones free of charge.
“The new Toowoomba Hospital will greatly enhance the local health network for local residents,” Ms D’Ath said.

TMR Director-General Neil Scales said the cameras were different for roadworks sites and school zones.
“Research has demonstrated a clear link between camera enforcement and reductions in speed-related fatalities and serious injuries,” Mr Scales said. “We asked the contractor to design and build the solarpowered roadworks speed cameras to sit on top of a mobile platform to allow for manoeuvrability around a work site. “At school zones, the cameras will be installed in specially designed, stationary school zone signs but can be moved around as needed.”
“Thousands more road users are seriously injured in crashes.“Speed kills and there is no apology for enforcing speed limits in school zones and roadworks sites.”
“During 2021 there were 74 fatalities as the result of crashes involving speeding motorists, representing almost 27 per cent of Queensland road fatalities,” Superintendent Andrews said.

Acting Executive Lead, Health Emergency Operation Centre Michelle Forrest said the testing sites had been a success in detecting and suppressing COVID-19 in the community for so long, but the response to the virus was now changing.
Darling Downs Health Acting Chief Executive Shirley-Anne Gardiner praised the efforts of staff to keep the community safe and informed throughout the height of the pandemic.
While the testing sites will close, Chris Pearse, the COVID-19 Testing Coordinator said there was still time for the community to visit a site and receive a test.
From Saturday, members of the community who need access to a COVID-19 test should conduct a rapid antigen test (RAT), visit a Commonwealth Respiratory Clinic or contact their GP to arrange a referral to a private pathology provider.
After providing COVID-19 testing services for over two years, Darling Downs Health COVID-19 testing sites will close at 4pm tomorrow, 2nd September. Operating since 16th March 2020, the COVID-19 testing site at Baillie Henderson Hospital has conducted over 170,699 tests.Together, regional testing locations across Darling Downs Health facilities processed over 247,321 over the same period.

COVID testing site closing on Friday
“The community will continue to be greeted by our friendly staff until 2 September and receive the test most suitable to them, in line with Government guidelines,” Mr Pearse said. “It really has been an incredible achievement and the staff that have worked at all of our testing sites should be proud of their efforts in protecting the community.”
Eligible concession card holders can access free RAT kits at Queensland Health distribution points.
“To look back now and see the speed at which we developed this testing capability is really a testament to the hard work and selflessness of our staff,” Ms Gardiner said “We were dealing with a new virus and amidst the uncertainties of the last two years, these testing sites were able to provide accurate and timely information to our Public Health teams and residents about COVID-19 within the community.”

Celebrating National Wattle Day Today, 1 September, is the start of Spring and is also National Wattle Day as it has been since 1992. There are 1,070 Acacia species native to Australia. The Golden Wattle (Acacia pycnantha) was officially gazetted as Australia’s national floral emblem in 1988. These evergreen, hardy, resilient, native plants with their abundant blossoms, enrich the soil with nitrogen and reward the birds and bees in your garden with food and shelter.
Get out of the house and into the garden Spring is here and after months of perhaps not getting the attention it deserves, your garden could do with some tender love and care.
Obviously, if you wish to plant one, check that the size is suitable for your garden, and that the species can grow in your locality, as some are not frost hardy: wattles-for-the-garden-and-back-yardwattleday.asn.au/about-wattles/ Acacia is a good source of pollen; for help with bee populations, and the seeds are a food source for different bird species. So, if this has germinated an interest in our national floral emblem, what are you ‘Wattling’ for! Get your trees to a tee After all the rainfall we’ve had, trees have been growing out in every direction and without proper care and attention will dominate your garden. To talk of people, neighbours, pollies dull or quite bright.
MDA National President Dr Michael Gannon said some junior doctors are instant converts and go on to have a rewarding career as a rural doctor.
- Wesley Paul Daniells
On occasions our neighbour drops in for a chat.
“A common practice in all my rural placements has been the warm welcome I have experienced... and Gundy did not disappoint,” she said.
Strike me pink, Crikey (like Steve), Is that so? or “Appalling”
Talking with
When you find the time, and have a good story to tell You’re welcome to join us for an afternoon so swell. It’s cheaper than having the Foxtel man installing, And you can end each story with any word except “Appalling!”
The experience of young doctor Alexandra Radke (pictured below) provides food for thought on the problem of attracting health care workers to rural towns.
Will bursaries attract rural health workers?
Authorised
A cup of tea as we sit and talk of this and that. Of things exciting, or morose or silly or galling. But always her favourite word we hear, “Appalling.”
Dr Radke was born and raised in Brisbane but now has a passion for rural medicine after receiving a bursary to attend a ten week clinical placement in the iconic rural town of Goondiwindi.
A couple of hours drift away in deep conversation
“My ten weeks in Goondiwindi were amazing,” Dr Radke said.“I really enjoyed working as a supervised doctor in the local community, managing my own patients and being able to build relationships with them over multiple appointments, while also honing my consultation skills with oversight provided by senior clinicians.”
When offered the chance to spend ten weeks with local doctors in Goondiwindi she jumped at the chance.
Although we’re mostly honest, some of the stories are a fable.
Words of wit we employ to cap off our brainstorming,
“The generous spirit of doctors and wider community shoneAlexthrough.”iscurrently working at Toowoomba Base hospital where she is continuing her training. It would appear the $1500 bursary offered by the MDA National and the Rural Doctors Association has been rewarded with Dr Alex Radke now fully supportive of maintaining her link with rural communities.
Dr Radke had previously spent a year long rural clinical placement at Stanthorpe Hospital in 2020, followed by a rural General Practice placement in the town of Warwick in 2021.
Of council, politicians, water, parking, movies and fashion.
Towns on the Darling Downs are no different to rural towns across Australia in finding ways to entice doctors, nurses and allied health workers to take up positions in rural locations.
Sometimes we laugh from stories, or end up bawling, We always manage to hear the singular expletive, “Appalling” We sit on the veranda, the lounge or at the table.
I’m sure you can tell these are times of sheer delight
The need to return to our own worlds we keep forestalling Another good yarn, followed by the irrepressible “Appalling.”

The tennis courts are available for hire, the keys are available at the Hodgson Vale shop. Hire costs are $4 an hour for financial members and $8 an hour for non financial members. Government Covid rules must be adhered to at all times while the tennis courts are being used.
Classes are preparing artwork to exhibit, the program has been launched and it looks like it’s going to be a beautiful day on the 10th. So come along one and all to the Vale View State School Fete!
Wyreema State School is lucky enough to have access to its own Story Dog, Lady, on a weekly basis and the students love reading to her. Lady is directly sponsored by the Toowoomba West Lions Club but the program itself is run by the charity, Story Dog Australia, which covers the training and insurance of the dog.
There are a couple of changes to the executive, John Mills our president has stepped down and Gavin Smith has taken on the role as president.
The new Friday night functions kick off on Friday the 7th of October at 6pm.
The Police, Fire and Ambulance will also be in attendance which is always a hit with the kids. We have the giant slide, putt putt golf and the bungee run to name a few of the awesome activities in which one can participate at the Vale View Fete. This is not a day to miss!
VALE VIEW STATE SCHOOL
The heated Sports Club is open for private functions so contact Mark our booking officer. The mobile contact is 0431 014 618 for further details,
The volunteers who have made these goodies are worth their weight in gold - we have sampled some of the goodies that will be on offer and they are splendid!
It’s almost fete week and at Vale View State School we are getting things “fete ready.”
We have two highly skilled baristas on the coffee machine making coffee and hot chocolate. The Wilsonton Lions Club will be on the tools, ensuring that the barbecue is tip top!
Our annual general meeting was held on Sunday and was followed by a barbecue lunch with was a good roll up of members in attendance.
OUR VERY OWN STORY DOG
Greg Thompson has also stepped down as vice-president and Maureen Newman has taken his place. Thanks to both John and Greg for their hard work and support over the last few years, it has been greatly appreciated.
The toilets at the Sports Club are also available for tennis hires whilst the upgrade of the access to the Lions Park is continuing. Memberships for 2022/23 financial year can now be paid and will cover the rest of this financial year if you are a new member. The costs stays at $25 for the family and deposits can be made at the Westpac Bank or online to our bank account, BSB 034 142, Account number 158 247, or post to PO Box 8315 Toowoomba South 4350. It is hoped to have a market day at the Sports Club grounds on Saturday the 8th of October - there will be more news about this proposal coming up soon so keep a look out.
WYREEMASTATESCHOOL
Joyclyn Mauger remains the treasurer and Ted Cavanagh remains as secretary while Mark remains in the booking officer role.

Highfields had looked threatening throughout the opening stages with only desperate defence by Wattles holding them at bay. But when centre Austin Jennings touched down on the end of set move close to the Highfields try line to have the scoreboard draw level at 6-all, the mood of the game changed significantly in favour of Wattles. With the breeze at their backs, Wattles ran in six tries in the 22 minutes leading into the break to boast a healthy 34-6 advantage at the half-way mark.
Wattles forwards dominated throughout with Brenden McBryde and Jordan Crocker along with Michael Pearson and Mitch Koina advancing the cause at every opportunity. It was a significant step towards a possible fifth A Grade premiership by the Warriors, totally dominating the midseason Madsen-Rassmussen Trophy champions, Highfields.
Wattles 52 (Jackson Green 3, Austin Jennings, Travis Burns, Matt Christensen, Ryan Duggan, Tyson Stevens, Jordan Crocker tries; Travis Burns 6, Tyson Stevens, Kai WilliamsonDuggan goals) defeated Highfields 14.
Leading 46-10 with ten minutes remaining in the game, the closing stages were all Wattles’ way.
Wattles A and Reserve grade teams have the opportunity to book grand final berths with both up against Gatton.
Wattles now advance to the major semi-final to match up against top grade minor premiers the Gatton Hawks this coming Sunday, the winner earning an early seat in the 2022 grand final.
A penalty to the Eagles in the opening minutes of the second stanza laid the foundation for a much needed try to centre Matthew Waites. Highfields failed to use the breeze advantage, while the Warriors lifted the momentum through touchdowns by backrowers Ryan Duggan and Tyson Stevens.
However, the match was shut out when rampaging frontrower Jordon Crocker was rewarded with a try after a more than impressive return to the team after a lengthy injury spell.
Wattles one step closer
Wattles full-back Jackson Green was in superb form finishing with a hat trick of tries, while captain/coach Travis Burns was at his organisational best on top of a class kicking game. Kai Williamson-Duggan was ever busy with his inspirational work around the ruck.
The first round of the 2022 Toowoomba Rugby League finals series saw home side Wattles Warriors rise to the occasion with a mighty 52-14 win over the Highfields Eagles.
A win to each would see the teams step into their respective season deciders on September 18th.

Coach Burns was more than enthusiastic with his side’s performance on Sunday, “But we’ll need to do it all again against competition pacesetters Gatton,” he said. Despite the final score, it was the Eagles that drew first blood when front-rower Carl Clemment ran onto a pass to post initial match points and a 6-0 lead after fifteen minutes.
