A ripping good time at Tallebudgera
Students in the 2022 Year 6 cohort at Cambooya State School recently embarked on their annual journey to Tallebudgera Camp.
Their experiences contributed to their own personal and social development and allowed each of them to gain a better understanding of their own skills and capabilities. Students took part in a variety of water activities, a tree tops high ropes course, a hike up a mountain, many different team building activities and an escape room challenge. A fantastic time was had by all students and staff.
It occurred between days of rain and flooding and road closures, but our adventurers were lucky enough to arrive safely and have sunshine for all five days of camp. The Year 6s participated in a five day adventure which aimed at taking them out of their comfort zone to work with as part of a team, explore natural environments, solve problems and overcome fears.
High ropes, kayaking and much more, the Cambooya State School’s Year 6 camp at Tallebudgera was a blast.

Greenmount State School
On Friday the 13th May the Prep – 2 class went on an exciting excursion to the Cobb and Co Museum to check out the olden days display. While at the museum the children were fortunate enough to speak with some volunteers who explained their crafts. They had the pleasure of speaking to a lady who was using a loom to weave a tartan cloth. She also showed the children how wool was spun using a drop spindle. The children then talked to some lovely gentlemen who were making wooden pens and a rocking horse. They showed the children some olden days tools and explained how the tools were used. After the children had spoken to the volunteers they set off to explore the rest of the museum. The students had a great time and spent a fair amount of time playing with the old irons and phones and having conversations with each other. Overall it was a great day with lots of fun and learning taking place. Greenmount students played with old phones (above) and learned about wooden rocking horses (below).

More work on Newman Road next year
After completing work on one culvert on Newman Road at Wyreema recently, Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) will be back next year to work on the road’s other culvert. Greenmount Etonvale Road work starting soon
Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) plans to begin works on Greenmount Etonvale Road soon, that work having been originally scheduled for late February. TRC Infrastructure Portfolio Chair Councillor Carol Taylor said the pavement rehabilitation works for the road have been delayed due to the constant wet weather the Region has experienced since November 2021. “The wet weather has not only affected this project but many other road projects as well,” Cr Taylor said. She said TRC hopes to have finished the work in July, subject to weather conditions. “Further wet weather may push the completion date back. “The flood crossing at Emu Creek will be rehabilitated as part of the works, however as this is a floodway, the road levels will not change,” she said.
The culvert on Newman Road closer to Wyreema township was replaced recently and the road surface improved.

Livestock slaughter and production figures out
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has released its official livestock slaughter and production figures for the first quarter of 2022. In the three months to March, average cattle carcase weights increase can be attributed to three key factors: reached 324.4kg/head. •High cattle prices, which are providing an economic This was 10.8kg heavier than at the same time last year. incentive to producers and feedlots to grow cattle out to According to Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA), this heavier weights. •Improved seasonal conditions in southern Queensland and New South Wales, which have provided producers with abundant feed. •Increased proportion of slaughter being sourced from the feedlot sector. In Q1 55% of slaughtered cattle came from feedlots. Notably, Queensland cattle averaged 336kg/head in the first quarter of 2022, the highest of any state and 12kg higher than the national average. Conversely, Western Australian cattle were the lightest at 293.4kg/head, however, this is still considered a high weight for the state. According to Stephen Bignell, Manager of Market Information at MLA, these high carcase weights are offsetting a drop in slaughter. “The ABS results show that Australian cattle slaughter in Q1 was 1,335,400 head, a 5.8% drop on the same quarter last year. Despite this nearly 6% drop in slaughter number, Australian beef production dropped only 2.5% due to the heavier cattle weights,” Mr Bignell said. “Encouragingly cattle slaughter for Q1 2022 in NSW was 3% higher than Q1 2021, rising to 297,000 head. “The Female Slaughter Rate (FSR) which is technical indicator of whether we are in a rebuild, currently sits at 41%, the lowest rate since Q4 2011. This indicates that the national herd is still within a strong rebuilding phase.” The lamb industry also showed results, with 124,600 tonnes more lamb meat produced compared to Q1 2021 on the back of higher carcass weights. Mr Bignell said overall, the figures demonstrate that despite the herd rebuild and supply-chain disruptions shown in the first quarter of 2022, the red meat sector can produce more high-quality meat from fewer animals.

Cambooya man facing seven charges
Police charged a 25-years-old Cambooya man last week following an incident in Wilsonton involving the alleged unlawful use of a motor vehicle and serious obstruct of police at a fast food outlet. At around 11.30pm on Monday, 23 May, police and emergency services were called to the drive-through of a McDonald’s on Bridge Street, Wilsonton where it will be alleged a man inside a stolen Nissan Qashqai was blocking the laneway. Police attempted to engage with the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, who verbally abused them before becoming aggressive. It will be further alleged that the man tried to accelerate and reverse the vehicle, ramming an ambulance and an unmarked police vehicle in the process. Officers deployed a taser and the man was taken into custody without further incident. The man was denied police bail and faces seven charges, including one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, unlawful possession of weapons, unlawful possession of suspected stolen property, serious assault police officer (obstruct), possess dangerous drugs, possess anything used in the commission of a crime, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and three charges relating to unlicensed driving.
$175 off next power bill
Queenslanders will receive a $175 Cost of Living Rebate on their next power bill. It February it was announced Queensland households would receive $50 off their power bills later in the year. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said this has been raised to $175 because of wholesale prices going up due to global instability. Electricity providers will automatically apply the credit, so there is no need to apply. The Australian Energy Regulator forecasts an increase in power bills of over 11 per cent due to a combination of high peak demand and the impact of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on gas prices.

Mushrooms in Cambooya?
Local tour guide Ken Davies would like to learn more about mushroom farming in the Cambooya area. The works happening as part of the master plan for the Lions Park to Sports Club area are progressing very slowly as this area will take some time to dry out properly. The alternate route via Carinya Drive has very deep ruts in it from trucks using it to drop off and take materials, so I would strongly advise not to use it at the moment. The next general meeting will be held on Thursday the 2nd of June at 7pm at the heated Sports Club. The heated Sports Club is open for private functions so please contact Mark our booking officer. The mobile contact is 0431 014 618 for further details, inspections and future bookings. - Ted Cavanagh

The Ragh Family Trophy stays put
Southern Suburbs Tigers were no match for Wattles last Saturday evening at Clifton’s Platz Oval falling 66 to 6 on the back of a stellar performance by Nick Van Der Poel. Van Der Poel ran in three tries in his side’s dozen try total on the way to a big loss for the Tigers. Captain/coach Travis Burns was happy to nail the win but somewhat frustrated with his side’s error count. “We can play a lot better, but the win over Souths was important after our loss to Goondiwindi last week, and keeps us among those at the top of the ladder,” he said. The Warriors victory along with reserve grade success saw the Ragh Family Trophy retained at Platz Oval. Souths impressed in the opening stages, front-rower Luke Maiden scoring the opening try but when Van Der Poel scored minutes later it opened the gate for a five try bundle to have Wattles 26–6 at half time. Austin Jennings added to the score in the opening minute of the second stanza scoring after a 50 metre run down the touch line, the initial 10 minutes reaping 24 points off four tries to Wattles Warriors A Graders celebrate the club’s Ragh have Wattles ahead 50–6. Family Trophy success with family members at Platz Oval Among classy touchdowns winger Aaron Hooper’s 44th on Saturday night. minute effort thrilled the crowd - a Tigers penalty kick for touch was falling centimetres short of the line and Hooper powerful influence on the result, while hooker Jack Duggan took the ball on his chest and sprinted 45 metres to score. shone in a solid all-round performance. A second Jennings try on full time lowered the curtain on a Wattles 34 (Mitch Duff 3, Tim Hentschel, Dale McAntee, confidence enhancing game for the Warriors as they prepare Lachlan Henry tries; Tom Morris 5 goals) Souths 6 (Heath Tisdell to face fellow top of the table team the Dalby Diehards on tries; Matt Gainey goals) Saturday. UNDER 19 Along with Van Der Poel, front-rower Jordan Crocker was Wattles’ 26–10 loss to the Redbank Plains Bears was one that instrumental in the result as were Matt Duggan and Travis got away. Burns. Coach Cameron Hamblin thought his Warriors let Wattles 66 (Nick Van Der Poel 3, Austin Jennings 2, Jordan themselves down in a number of aspects, and the fact that the Crocker, Kai Williamson-Duggan, Tyson Stevens, Aaron Hooper, Bears were susceptible through the middle, but Wattles failed Ryan Duggan, Travis Burns, Mitchell Bourke tries; Matt Duggan 8, to take advantage. Michael Pearson goals) Souths 6 (Luke Maiden tries; Matt Gainey Along with skipper Hamilton, Matthew Wilson was goals) impressive for the home side, his kicking in particular RESERVE GRADE continually turning his opponents around, and full-back Gus Wattles line-up boasted two happy coaches in Garth Hutchinson was another to shine. Lonergan and Nick Morris after a gutsy 34–6 win over Tigers Under 17 qualified Rueben Sullivan debuted in the senior and playing a role in the Wattles’ club retaining the Ragh ranks. Family Trophy. Redbank Plains 26 (Dustin Maugatai 2, Brown Loane, Nivatial Going into Saturday Wattles and Souths were level pegging, Faafua, Clarence Fesolai tries; Khan Fowler 3 goals), Wattles 10 each having won the award on eight occasions since it was (Matthew Wilson, Jamie Hamilton tries; Matthew Wilson goal) introduced in 2005. THIS WEEKEND Lonergan praised his troops for what “a really good win”, Wattles meet Dalby Diehards at Platz Oval, this Saturday but insisted the score line didn’t reflect how tough Souths with the A Grade match contesting the annual Rod Frahm were.
