From Greenmount to the world

Local producers across Queensland, such as Greenmount’s Kialla Pure Foods, have been connected to international retailers through a virtual trade fair run by the Queensland Government.

The virtual trade fair connects over 60 Queensland companies with importers and distributors in twelve major Asian markets. It is part of Trade & Investment Queensland’s Taste of Queensland promotion. A wide range of food and beverage products was sent to the potential buyers to sample. Stuart Maher, Commercial Manager of Kialla Pure Foods, said the virtual trade fair is a great opportunity to expand the company into new markets.

A locally owned and operated business

WELCOME TO WINTER

“Given we can’t travel due to COVID, it is a great opportunity to build relationships in international markets with retailers,” Mr Maher said. Kialla Pure Foods, located on Greenmount Eton Vale Road at Greenmount, processed a wide range of organic grains, pulses and seeds into premium bulk ingredients for retailers and manufacturers. It sells everything from flours and minimally processed wholefoods to pancake mixes and protein smoothie blends. After having past success expanding into the Japanese and South Korean markets with its waffle and pancake mixes, Mr Maher said Kialla Pure Foods was hoping this opportunity would help the company expand into the Taiwanese market. Mr Maher said growth in international markets thanks to the virtual trade fair could lead to growth in the company’s operations. “Every time we grow, it allows us to employ more local people. “It helps us up-skill, train staff and hire more millers, administration staff and so on,” he said. Mr Maher said the advantages to be acquired from the virtual trade fair were more than just about gaining new customers. “It’s about getting feedback too,” he said. “We make assumptions about what the market might want and this gives us an opportunity to find out.” Queensland Premier and Minister for Trade Annastacia Palaszczuk said the virtual trade push reinforces in key Asian markets that Queensland is open and keen for more business which is vital for our economic recovery. “This novel, month long promotion has already generated very keen interest in our Asian markets with so many potential buyers already signed up for on-line meetings,” the Premier said. In the last two years, Taste of Queensland events have resulted in more than $10 million in sales for Queensland exporters.

Region remains drought stricken

Despite improved rainfall across the Toowoomba Region, the entire area remains officially drought declared.

A review of the State’s drought situation has led drought declarations being revoked in five local government areas, bringing the drought-declared area of Queensland down from 67.4 per cent to 65 per cent. Areas removed from the drought list include Goondiwindi Regional Council and Logan, Redland and Gold Coast City Councils. The fifth area is the drought-declared part of the Charters Towers Regional Council. Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries and Minister for Rural Communities Mark Furner said he remaining drought-declared local government areas, including the Toowoomba Region, did not receive enough rainfall for a revocation. “Outside the south east, pasture quality and quantity, crop production, water reserves, animal welfare and breeder conception rates have all been negatively impacted by the lack of significant rainfall and high temperatures in spring and early summer, and there are still ongoing rainfall deficits,”Mr Furner said. “This can be seen on the prototype Combined Drought Index (CDI), tailored for Australia based on a mix of drought indicators. “The CDI avoids relying too heavily on rainfall measurement alone, which after isolated events can give a short-term impression a drought is over.” “The CDI is being developed by the Northern Australia Climate Program with funding from University of Southern Queensland, the Queensland Government’s Drought and Climate Adaptation Program and Meat and Livestock Australia’s Donor Company. Mr Furner said Local Drought Committees (LDCs) meet at least once a year, generally at the end of the summer rainfall period, to discuss the impact of seasonal conditions and make recommendations about the drought status of their area. The Minister said producers in any drought-declared area who believe their property conditions are improved enough to allow restocking can have their property individually revoked. “If their drought declaration is revoked, producers can access returning from agistment and restocking freight

subsidies through the Drought Relief Assistance Scheme (DRAS) for up to two years after the end of the drought declaration,” he said. “To be eligible for these subsidies producers must ensure their property’s drought declaration is first revoked before introducing any livestock.” The drought declaration map can be viewed at longpaddock. qld.gov.au and more information on the prototype CDI can be viewed at nacp.org.au/drought_monitor

Fire danger amplified by mouse plague

As winters rolls around, residents in areas affected by mice infestation are being warned to check their electric heating to minimise the potential for fires. Although most residents in the On Our Selection News area have given their heaters a good workout this year as temperatures have already dropped below zero, heaters that have already been used as well those that have not should still be checked. RACQ spokesperson Kirsty Clinton said the organisation had received almost 1,000 claims for fire damage in the last three years. “This year, in particular, those living in regions affected by the current mice plagues should be extra vigilant to check for damage to appliances that have been in storage. “Rodents as well as insects can chew cords causing serious damage which could lead to a fire.” New research by RACQ found that just 42 per cent of Queenslanders checked their electric heater for wear and tear each winter before using the appliance. Further research revealed 22 per cent of Queenslanders had never replaced heating appliances and a another 20 per cent admitted they only did so every six to ten years. “In storage, these appliances can get dusty, rusty and damaged so it’s important you have a quick look over them before plugging them in this winter,” Ms Clinton said.

“Check for excessive dust build up, rust spots and loose or frayed cords. “Faulty and damaged heating appliances are a serious fire risk.” Ms Clinton said it wasn’t just heating appliances that could lead to a fire. “During winter and throughout the whole year, remember not to leave an oven, barbecue or cooktop unattended, regularly clean your clothes dryer filter, and make sure all smoke alarms are in good working order.”

Queensland lowest for workers’ comp premiums

Average premiums for workers’ compensation insurance will remain unchanged this year, leaving Queensland with still the lowest average compensation in Australia. Industrial Relations Minister Grace Grace told Parliament last week that the average WorkCover premium would be maintained at $1.20 per $100 of wages paid for 2021-2022. “WorkCover will also maintain the 5 per cent discount for early payment, as well as the apprentice incentive, where apprentice wages are excluded from premium calculations,” Ms Grace said. She said sound financial management and investment decisions in recent years had made Queensland’s workers’ compensation scheme one of the country’s most efficient.

The Networks to Build Drought Resilience program is offering successful first round applicants a share of $2.3 million through the first of two rounds of grants. The program will support the community organisations, networks and infrastructure that help people and communities prepare for, and live through, times of drought. The Networks to Build Drought Resilience program is part of the Federal Government’s $5 billion Future Drought Fund with program partner the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR), which is bringing $1.125 million in philanthropic funding to the program. Minister for Agriculture, Drought and Emergency Management and Member for Maranoa David Littleproud said strong rural and regional networks are critical for the drought resilience of Australian agriculture-dependent communities. “It is the community leaders, mentors, local organisations and networks in farming communities that drive change and offer the support when needed,” Mr Littleproud said. FRRR CEO Natalie Egleton said local community networks are the foundation of resilient communities. “Through this program we’re helping to invest in the future of agriculture-dependent regions by enabling them to prepare now for periods of ongoing dryness,” Ms Egleton said. “A key element of this program will be to build stronger networks, and to encourage greater sharing of learnings and more collaboration within and across networks.” This is the first of two funding rounds, with a second to open later in 2021. Interested organisations are encouraged to apply directly to FRRR by visiting frrr.org.au/networks

AquaGuard fixed Derek’s Greenmount hard water problems! This is what Derek had to say.

The Genesis IEX Water Softening System

(9 Systems to choose from)

‘Bruce owner of AquaGuard knew exactly the quality of water out here and recommended/sold us an IEX or Ion Exchange Water Softening System for the whole house. The system breaks down the hard minerals so they don’t build up in the pipes and appliances. I’ve heard many complaints about the water quality here and about replacing appliances annually including hot water systems in spite of those homes having sediment water filters. I’ve also seen

pictures of pipes blocked with calcium. With our system we have not had any calcium build up in the bathrooms, kitchen, laundry etc. While a lot of companies are recommending a particular system for our area, Bruce at AquaGuard is the only one who knew the quality of the water and the right system to use. We could not be happier with our choice and highly recommend AquaGuard’

(Pictured Right) After 1 year. Right pipe town water into softener, discoloured. Left pipe clean after water softener.

Ideal for Bore and Town Water

Bruce says ‘Our system removes water hardness plus calcium, magnesium, iron and manganese. Saves electricity, prolongs hot water systems and dishwasher units and dechlorinates. No more calcium build up. Great for your health. All this from just $790.00.

NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORY TIME On Wednesday, our students went to space! Well….almost. We were read to from space! Yes, that’s right… We had a real astronaut read to our students via a live stream from the International Space Station. In a first for Greenmount State School we crossed live to space as part of the National Simultaneous Story Time initiative where the picture book ‘Give Me Some Space’ by Phillip Bunting was read encouraging more than 1 million Australian children to be reading the same book at the same time. Morrison said, “I liked the National Story Time because it was reading from a real astronaut from space. The astronaut made the book really interesting.” Emily said, “I liked the astronauts reading of the book because she used great expression. “It was cool that it was from space and we are learning about space.” It sure was an out of this world experience. GALA DAY We participated in our first Gala day of the year with students in the 3 to 6 class learning new skills and meeting new friends at Allora on Friday 14th. Students played netball, soccer and rugby league whilst demonstrating Greenmount team spirit and great sportsmanship. We are looking forward to our next Gala Day this Friday and using our new skills. PCYC BIKE EDUCATION SUCCESS The Bicycle Safety program involves theory and practice for students to learn road rules and signs, how to ride, control and maintain a bike safely, and how to scan the environment to identify potential hazards. Our 3 to 6 class participated in this program earlier in the year but this week were awarded their certificates of achievement with two students receiving Excellence across all areas. Congratulations Taylah and Siennce!

Bunker’s Hill State School

SPEAKING COMPETITION WINNERS On Sunday, students from Bunker’s Hill State School competed in the Year 6 Speaking Competition at the Languages and Cultures Festival. We had to perform a speech in Indonesian, in front of a panel of judges and a small audience. Our speeches were about ourselves and our lives. It was a bit nerve racking before we spoke and we had to use a small microphone to help project our voices. It was fun representing our school, Bunker’s Hill State School, and we placed, 1st, 2nd and 3rd. - By Jasper and Payton

From left: Chase placed 2nd, Payton 1st, and Jasper 3rd. Distributed by Mojo Motorcycles

Wattles down Valleys

Competition heavyweights Valleys Roosters were no match for Wattles on Saturday as the travelling team prevailed 25 to 12 at Herb Steinohrt Oval. Nineteen-years-old hooker Kai Williamson-Duggan, a nephew of Wattles top graders Matt & Ryan Duggan, spearheaded the victory and was rewarded with overall player of the match honours after a sterling performance against class opposition. After serving a three-match suspension Wattles player/ coach Travis Burns donned his favoured number ‘6’ jersey to run on and certainly made his presence felt in the green and gold halves. For the opening couple of months of the Toowoomba Rugby League A Grade Premiership Valleys have demonstrated awesome ability earning them kudos as leading contenders for the end of season silverware in their quest to retain their premier’s title. On paper, the Warriors line-up made great reading heading in to Saturday’s Round 7 clash, regardless of a 24–16 armwrestle loss last week in the Southern Downs local derby with Warwick. The Roosters may have approached the match nonchalantly given Wattles less than average form of late, and if so, they learnt a valuable lesson. Aside from some outstanding attacking play and the enthusiasm generated by the return of Burns, defence was the recipe to Wattles’ win. Both Ryan Duggan and nephew Kai Williamson-Duggan dominated Wattle’s tackle count, while the big men in green and gold kept the highly rated Roosters on the back foot. With Burns back in the nerve centre along with half-back Matt Duggan, Wattles had an evening where everything seemed to go right. Wattles 25 (Matt Duggan, Steve Elliott, Kai Duggan, Brenden McBride tries Matt Duggan 2, Travis Burns 2 goals Matt Duggan field goal) defeated Valleys 12 (Alex Hinch, Dwayne Duncan tries Dwayne Duncan 2 goals) RESERVE GRADE Valleys 16 d. Wattles 4 (Brenden Wilson try) UNDER 18 Valleys 54 d. Wattles 4 (Rylan Saville try) - Glyn Rees
