Toowoomba Region RADF allocation not impressive

The Queensland Government has announced details of Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) grants for 2021-22 and the Toowoomba Region has not fared well. In fact the total allocated to the Toowoomba Region is the equal sixth lowest of 59 grants made to local government. For 2021-22, the Regional Council will get $18,000, similar to a grant made to the Banana Shire Council. The five councils receiving lower grants are Balonne, Boulia, Croydon, Richmond and South Burnett. The largest slice of the RADF action has been allocated to the Sunshine Coast Regional Council which will have $115,000 to distribute among its arts community. Total RADF funding across the State for the coming year is $4.38 million, made up of $2.08 million contributed by the State Government and $2.3 million from the 59 local government councils. Minister for the Arts Leeanne Enoch said RADF is a great example of working together to deliver our COVID-19 economic recovery plan, supporting employment opportunities and creating new arts and cultural experiences in local and regional communities. “Our investment complements the Palaszczuk Government’s wider commitment to regional arts, including continued support of $6 million over four years for the Regional Arts Services Network (RASN),” Ms Enoch said. “The arts, cultural and creative sectors are key to delivering our plan for economic recovery from COVID-19, each year injecting $8.5 billion into the state’s economy and supporting more than 92,000 jobs for Queenslanders.” The Minister said despite the impact and challenges of COVID-19, the innovative RADF arts and cultural experiences developed and presented throughout Queensland demonstrate the creativity, resilience and adaptability within the arts sector.

Motorcycle crash claims life of Wyreema woman

A motorcycle crash in the South Burnett on Sunday afternoon claimed the life of a Wyreema woman and put her daughter in hospital. The forty-years-old mother was riding her motorcycle on Kumbia Road at Ellesmere when it left the roadway, crashed through a fence and struck a tree. Emergency services were called to the scene shortly before 2.30pm. Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics reported the woman’s condition as critical upon arrival, but she was pronounced deceased a short time later. Her ten-years-old daughter had been a pillion passenger at the time of the incident and sustained a serious injury to her arm. After treatment at the scene, the girl was in a stable condition when loaded onto a helicopter and airlifted to the Toowoomba Hospital. Officers from the Queensland Police Forensic Crash Unit are investigating the incident. Police are hoping that someone may have dashcam images of the motorcycle prior to the time of the crash and have called on anyone who can assist to make contact through Policelink on 131 444. There have been more than 40 motorbike fatalities on Queensland roads since the start of this year, which is in excess of a third more than occurred in 2020.

Are you bogged mate?

Places are still available for the free event ‘Bogged in Clifton,’ which is a barbecue lunch followed by a discussion on overcoming mental health challenges. The event, to be held at Clifton Senior Citizens Centre on Saturday 14th August, will be led by Mary O’Brien (right). Ms O’Brien visits regional communities across Australia which are ‘bogged’ mentally, as depression in the bush is a lot like getting bogged in the mud. ‘Are you bogged mate?’ is based around four fence posts: 1. Engaging directly with rural men – letting country blokes know that they matter by speaking their language and meeting them in their comfort zone. 2. Changing the landscape – breaking down the stigma around mental health and bringing this crucial topic into the spotlight. We do this through spreading awareness, as well as straight-talking speaking engagements and education events that challenge, enlighten and empower. 3. Bridging the gap – connecting rural men to the resources available, supporting and directing them to the right places while bringing the conversation to rural communities. 4. Being a voice for rural men – speaking up for those who often won’t, we want to light the path to understanding and be a strong advocate for all. To RSVP for catering purposes, contact Kate Flynn on 0400 173 315. The event is supported by the Clifton Show Society. Ekka cancelled for second year

The Brisbane Ekka has been cancelled for the second year in succession as South East Queensland battles the latest COVID-19 outbreak. Deputy Premier Steven Miles announced the cancellation of Brisbane’s annual show as the lockdown of eleven local government areas was extended until 4pm on Sunday. Mr Miles said hce realised that cancelling the Ekka would be sad and disappointing for many people. “We just can’t afford to have an event like that where people travel into town, circulate in large numbers - the risk is just too great,” he said. The Ekka, had been scheduled to begin this weekend and run until August 15. The associated Stud Beef Cattle Show, known as “Ekka Beef Week” had been cancelled earlier. Following the cancellation of the 2021 Ekka by Queensland Health all of the Queensland Ag Shows State Competition Finals that were to be held in conjunction with Ekka have had to be postponed. These include: Showgirl Rural Ambassador Stud Beef Young Judges and Paraders Dairy Young Judges and Paraders Prime Beef Young Judges Dark Rich Fruit Cake Ute Muster. The General Manager of Queensland Ag Shows, Trevor Beckingham said planning is underway to reinstate these features. “All of these competitions have been postponed and we are currently working through the rescheduled dates and venues and will advise these as soon as possible,” Mr Beckingham said. “Ekka was one of only four Shows that we have lost this year as a direct result of COVID. “Our thoughts and best wishes are with Ekka organisers who have been dealt this severe blow and we will continue to support Ekka and all of our Agricultural Shows throughout Queensland during these interesting times.”

Forums to help growers reduce grain losses

Using the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Science (ABARES) estimates of crop area and Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) research, the average farm growing 324 hectares of canola experiences harvest losses of about $24,300 each year. To assist growers to reduce losses and improve operations at harvest, the GRDC is running a series of half-day forums across Queensland and New South Wales. GRDC Grower Relations Manager – North, Richard Holzknecht said the forums had been developed in response to industry needs. “Growers have been asking us for more information about best practice harvester set up at the critical time,” Mr Holzknecht said. “Research has shown that in some instances significant amounts of grain are being left on the ground during harvest. In canola crops this can equate to income losses of about $75/ ha, while losses in winter chickpeas have been observed at about $52/ha.” The half-day forums led by industry experts will provide information and discussion around preventable harvester losses, improvements in efficiency and output, calibrating harvester technology, reducing the risk of harvester fires and methods of harvest weed seed control (HWSC). Mr Holzknecht said while not all grain losses could be prevented, losses associated with machinery settings and configuration could be minimised, and these forums could give growers and operators the confidence to make changes to maximise their returns. “Measuring harvest losses every day or multiple times a day can seem tedious to operators, but the payoff from adjusting the machine to minimise the loss is worth the hassle. You can’t manage what you don’t measure,” he said. “We will also have experts from different harvest support services speaking at the forums and offering practical demonstrations because it is important to acknowledge that there are differences in machinery set up depending on the environment.” On the Darling Downs, the nearest forum to this region will be held at Dalby on Wednesday September 8 from 9am to 1pm. Country singer set to star

Singer/Songwriter Tracy Coster is to perform some tracks from her latest album alongside some classics at the School of Arts Hall in Nobby on Saturday 14 August. Clermont, Mark Oats, Michel Rose, Pete Denahy, Garry Steel and Steve Newton and backing vocalists Shanley Del, Johanna Hemara, Lynette Guest, Patti Morgan, Allison Forbes, James Gillard, Steve Newton and Pete Denahy. The concert starts at 2pm and is a COVID-safe event, with ticket prices ranging from $10 for children to $20 for adults. To book, call Nola on 4697 3570.

Darling Downs COVID figures

Southerly Change is the name of the new album by Tracy Coster (above) and it features guest performances by some big names in Australian country music. Daughter of the legendary Stan Coster, born Tracy Leann, she grew up performing as a vital part of her father’s travelling show since 1979. Coster released her debut album From the Heart in 1987 and in 1994 was inducted into the Hands of Fame in Tamworth, the youngest ever at the time to be honoured. She has either written or co-written seven of the album’s 13 songs. Some of the new tunes that Coster might roll out in Nobby include Patti’s Place, penned by herself and her producer Steve Newton, and it paints a real picture of some very prominent Tamworth characters at play, while the poignancy of Dreams Don’t Come True is all Tracy’s own work. Tracy said the new album has all the ingredients any lover of traditional country music looks for in a new record. Pete Denahy, who penned the ballad, I’m Always Here, duets with Tracy on An Eastbound Train, the song in which she shares writing credits with her late father, Stan Coster. Coster’s new album was conceived in lockdown, when she was unable to tour to places like Nobby and Gowrie Little Plain, with each of the session musicians creating their own tracks locally. Contributors to the album include musicians Scott Hills, James Gillard, Brendan Radford, Lawrie Minson, Andrew

F.A.S.T. action saves lives

During National Stroke Week, which started on Monday and ends on Sunday, Queenslanders are being urged to learn and share the most common signs of stroke, F.A.S.T. save a life – possibly your own,” Ms Sanders said. Think of the word F.A.S.T and ask these questions if you “It’s simple. Acting F.A.S.T. can save lives. suspect a stroke: Time saved equals brain saved. •Face – Check their face. Has their mouth drooped? •Arms – Can they lift both arms? We can have the best health professionals and treatments, but you must get to hospital first to access them. Time saved •Speech – Is their speech slurred? Do they understand you? equals brain saved.” •Time – Time is critical. If you see any of these signs, call triple zero (000) straight away. In the Division of Groom, which covers everywhere between Westbrook and Nobby and beyond, 184 people had a stroke for the first time in 2020 and there are 3026 survivors of stroke are living in the community. or Stroke Foundation Queensland State Manager Andrea Sanders said lives can be saved and disability from stroke can be reduced if people know what to do in a stroke emergency. “This National Stroke Week, I want to thank every person who plays a role in a stroke emergency,” Ms Sanders said. “That includes the person who recognises a stroke and calls & triple zero (000), to the call taker, the paramedics, the doctors and nurses who treat the patient and the dedicated health professionals who support their recovery. “These individuals are all “United by Stroke”, which is the theme of National Stroke Week. “They all make an incredible difference to lives and See www.tfbksupplies.com.au improve outcomes for the future.” 347 Taylor St Toowoomba Stroke attacks the brain, the human control centre. T 4633 0222 It is estimated more than 5,300 people in Queensland will Mon-Fri 8.30am - 5pm | Sat 9am-Noon experience a stroke for the first time this year. When a stroke happens, more than 1.9 million brain cells die each minute, but time-critical treatment can stop this damage. Queensland residents are being urged to learn and share AGRICULTURAL the most common signs of stroke, F.A.S.T., this National Stroke Week. Stroke Foundation wants at least one person in every household and workplace in Australia to know the F.A.S.T. signs of stroke and understand they need to call triple zero (000) at the first sign – no matter how long it lasts. “This National Stroke Week be united by stroke by sharing the F.A.S.T message with your family and friends. Hodgsonvale Community Sports Club

The annual general meeting was held on Sunday at the Sports club, with no changes to the executive and our finances remaining solid despite the restrictions Covid caused the club during the year. For those that attended the barbecue lunch afterwards it was great to be able to catch up and discuss the latest Olympic happenings including how unlucky Allora’s Matt Denny was, but great to see that he threw a personal best. Terry our booking officer has stood down from his position of booking officer for next year. We are still looking for someone or perhaps two persons to possibly share the role, so if you would like to be part of the community and do a rewarding job, this could be your chance. Contact John on 0428 763 231 for further details. It is hoped that improvements this year to the sports club will include getting a new refreshments area and the purchase of a new freezer as the old one has reached its used by date. The nice sunny days in winter are just right for playing tennis so if you can get a group together come along and enjoy the facilities. Members are charged $4 an hour and for non-members it is $8 an hour. There is an extra $2 an hour charge for the lights if they are used. The key to the courts is now back at the Spar shop. There is only one key for the courts themselves, the toilet key has been removed and hirers and patrons are asked to use the toilets at the Lions Park, as they are cleaned and serviced regularly at the moment for the Corona virus. The padlock is to be cleaned at the tennis courts on departure and the key and tag are to be cleaned on return from the tennis courts to the shop. There are disinfection wipes freely available at the Spar for this purpose - ask at the counter. Conditions could change at short notice if Government covid rules require this. It is planned for the club to re-open for Friday night functions on the 8th of October. The club is open for private functions and is fully heated, so to do an inspection and make a booking please call 0431 014 618. Also you can check out our website to see what facilities are available or you can send an email to hcsc8315@ gmail.com Any bookings will be subject to covid restrictions and may have to be cancelled at short notice if government Covid rules require this. Discounts apply for financial members who hire the facility. Memberships for the 2021/22 financial year can now be paid. The cost stays at $25 for the family and deposits can be made at the Westpac Bank or on line to our bank account: BSB 034 142, Account number 158 247, or by post to PO Box 8315 Toowoomba South 4350. - Ted Cavanagh

New RACQ LifeFlight Rescue doctors on the Downs

Two new RACQ LifeFlight Rescue Critical Care Doctors are jumping on board Toowoomba’s rescue choppers, ready to bring advanced medical care to sick or injured patients, often in some of the state’s most challenging locations. Having worked in both a rural hospital and Toowoomba Hospital’s emergency department, one of the new recruits, Dr Gabriel See, has already seen the difference LifeFlight doctors make, firsthand. “From a rural doctor’s point of view, it’s always a relief when the LifeFlight doctor comes and takes your patient to a facility with better care,” Dr See said. “Then from the receiving point of view, the LifeFlight doctor always has everything done well and tied together and gives a good handover.” Dr See was inspired to take on the retrieval challenge, after hearing other RACQ LifeFlight Rescue doctors talk about the unique experiences of the job and how they manage critical scenarios. “One of my consultants talked about how he managed to Dr Gabriel See and Dr Steve McElroy undertaking a bring a patient from the brink of death, back to life and she training exercise. came back to thank him after the rehab, he said that was a moment in life that no one could take away,” Dr See said. Toowoomba Rugby League (TRL) officials were forced to make the unfortunate but necessary decision to cancel last weekend’s Round 15 matches due to the ongoing COVID-19 lockdown in South East Queensland.

Although the vast majority of teams, including Wattles, are not based in local government areas affected by the lockdown, the Gatton Hawks are as the Lockyer Valley Region is included in the lockdown, as well as some players from multiple teams who had been in the lockdown areas. Round 15 has been declared null and void, meaning it will not be rescheduled and the ladder will remain the same.

Wattles were set to face off against the ladder leading Goondiwindi Boars at home. At the time of going to print, a decision has not been made by TRL officials on the fate of Round 16 will go ahead. The extension of the lockdown to at least 4pm on Sunday will likely have an influence on their decision. Wattles are scheduled to play against the second placed Highfields Eagles at Platz Oval in Clifton on Saturday. Whatever happens, the result of the match will have significant implications for determining the composition of the ladder come finals time. - Glyn Rees

ART SHOW SPECTACULAR! Last Friday afternoon, Bunker’s Hill State School held an Art Show to showcase the students’ artwork. All the students in the school got to show off their artistic talents and got to contribute to painting a community mural. The mural was designed by a past student Connor Byrd and it highlights all the important memories of being a student at Bunker’s Hill State School. The Art Show is a great way to display the students’ artwork to an audience and gives the parents and the school community the opportunity to see some amazing art creations.
