Rain, storms coming this way

Those who have plans to spend the upcoming weekend outdoors may need to reconsider as the Bureau of Meteorology is predicting significant rain and storms affecting the Darling Downs.

Senior Meteorologist Jonathan How said across eastern Australia, storm activity is expected to decrease today (Thursday) compared to the widespread showers and storms peaking in the afternoon and evening on Wednesday, which was expected to cause moderate to major flooding in already flooded rivers in NSW, Victoria, and possibly Tasmania and southern Queensland.

The storm is expected reinvigorate tomorrow (Friday) over southern Queensland, spreading east into the Darling Downs and inland New South Wales on Saturday.

“Many communities that recently experienced flooding or are currently in flood will likely see rivers rise in the coming week including inland and western areas of New South Wales,” Mr How said.

“The ground remains saturated, and any additional rainfall will cause streams and rivers to rise.”

Communities should stay up to date with the latest forecasts and warnings via the Bureau’s website bom.gov.au and the BOM Weather app and follow advice of emergency services.

Toowoomba Regional Council operates a Disaster Dashboard, which includes useful information such as closed roads, river heights and emergency contacts.

It can be accessed at disaster.tr.qld.gov.au

The Bureau of Meteorology has also recently released a new national heatwave warning service.

It provides an alert through the BOM Weather app and Bureau website that a heat hazard is forecast within the coming four days, helping Australians to prepare for and lessen the impacts of a heatwave events.

The alerts will include heatwave warnings issued by the Bureau along with five sets of action statements aligned to heatwave severity, agreed with by partner health and

emergency service agencies across Australia.

In the event of a heatwave, heatwave warnings will be issued by the Bureau through the BOM Weather app and Bureau website, as well as media and social media, with health messages relating to heat provided by state and territory agencies.

A heatwave occurs when the maximum and the minimum temperatures are unusually hot over a three-day period at a location.

This is considered in relation to the local climate and past weather at the location.

Pittsworth craft, food event to highlight town

The 17th Pittsworth Craft & Fine Food Spectacular

Friday, October 7 and Saturday, October 8, promises to shine a light on the town and surrounding district.

Almost 50 stall holders will set up a colourful array of displays in the town hall for both days, with still more outside in Centenary Park.

The Spectacular was started as a fundraising initiative of the St Andrew’s Anglican Parish and most members of the inaugural committee are still involved including coordinator Brenda Prentice, Ros Scotney, Leonie Lee-Archer, Judy Krieg and Heather Hanlon.

As well as showcasing the work of local artisans and food producers, the event showcases local business and community organisations.

“It’s a very pleasant day out with lots of local artisans offering craft and food and lots of organisations having stalls including Crafty Quilters,” Brenda said.

“Pittsworth Confectionery on Mallard Road will have the factory open to the public and many other businesses will also be involved.

“It’s really an invitation for people to come to Pittsworth and see what we have here.”

People searching for a special gift might look to Barbary Lane Bears, Rhonda’s Rag Trade, Deez Creations, Just Add Confetti or numerous other specialised stalls.

For visitors looking for something to eat they can choose from stalls such as Old Style Russian Fudge and Coconut Ice, Amy’s Sweet Treats, Jim’s Jerky or Lucille’s Kitchen.

For those who may like to sample some local wines, Riversands Vineyards or Springdell Fruit Wine, will be available.

Whether you’re looking for jewellery, women’s clothing, leather goods, homewares or soaps and skin care it will all be available at the Pittsworth Craft and Fine Foods Spectacular.

Exhibition celebrates natural world

As well as the Craft & Fine Food Spectacular, Pittsworth is hosting an exhibition of paintings by Cliff Bauer titled A Time for Change, this weekend.

The exhibition will be hosted at the Sondrio on 67 Gallery, 67 Yandilla Street, from today (Thursday, October 6) until Sunday, October 9.

Opening times will be from 10am to 3pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday; and from 10am to noon on Sunday with free admission.

The focus of this exhibition will be Mr Bauer’s love and appreciation for the Australian landscape and his desire for its preservation.

He has fond memories of growing up in Pittsworth and was a member of the Pittsworth Art Society in the mid 1960s.

A stronger GP workforce for our region

Darling Downs and West Moreton Public Health Network (PHN) will play a key role in the future distribution of the GP workforce after being awarded a grant through the Australian Government’s Health Workforce Program.

Darling Downs and West Moreton is one of seven Queensland PHNs that will provide analysis and advice on the priority locations for GP training placements to meet current and future GP workforce needs, through the Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) Program GP Workforce Planning and Prioritisation grant.

This work will make a vital contribution to the future of GP training within the upcoming transition to a college-led model of training from 1 February 2023.

Announced by the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care, the AGPT Program will be delivered by the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) and the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) to build a training model that is focused on training doctors in the areas that them most.

“Like many regions across Australia, our region is facing significant GP workforce shortages, with a particular impact being experienced within our region communities,” Darling Downs and West Moreton PHN CEO, Lucille Chalmers said.

“Our advice will help inform the distribution of the GP trainee workforce and build a stronger workforce presence across our region.”

The distribution approach under the college-led model will provide flexibility to meet demand across Australia, while also providing flexibility to ensure positive registrar experiences.

The AGPT Program provides full-time, on-the-job training for doctors who want to specialise in general practice and/ or rural and remote medicine who can then work as GPs anywhere in Australia.

The three-to-four-year training program offers 1,500 training places each year under a competitive merit-based process.

“We’ve partnered with our primary care workforce and established strong stakeholder relationships across the health system since 2015,” Ms Chalmers said.

“These relationships, along with our comprehensive

Health Needs Assessment, means we are well-placed to advise on the health and service needs of our region.”

Building a strong and sustainable GP workforce requires the ongoing support and engagement of many stakeholders, which is why Darling Downs and West Moreton PHN will continue to work broadly to attract and support GPs across the region served by the local network.

Lactalis found breaching Dairy Code of Conduct

The Federal Court has found Lactalis Australia Pty Ltd (Lactalis) breached the Dairy Code of Conduct by failing to meet some of its obligations in relation to the 2020-21 milk season, in court proceedings brought by the ACCC. Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) Deputy Chair Mick Keogh described the decision as a win for dairy farmers, who generally have limited bargaining power in their dealings with much larger processors.

“This is an important case for the ACCC as these are the first proceedings we have instituted under the Dairy Code of Conduct,” Mr Keogh said.

The Code commenced in 2020 to address systemic

transparency issues and bargaining power imbalances between dairy farmers and processors.

The Court found that Lactalis breached the Code when it failed to publish its milk supply agreements on its website by the Code’s deadline of 2pm on 1 June 2020, and instead required dairy farmers to sign-up through a web portal to receive them by email.

The Court also found that Lactalis breached the Code by publishing and entering into agreements that allowed them to unilaterally terminate the agreement in circumstances that did not amount to a material breach.

In particular, Lactalis was permitted to unilaterally terminate the agreement when, in their opinion, the farmer had engaged in “public denigration” of processors, key customers or other stakeholders.

A hearing on relief, including penalties, will be held at a later date.

Veg industry growing

A report from ABAREAS shows the Australian vegetable industry has grown significantly by taking advantage of changes in consumer incomes and tastes.

ABARES Executive Director, Dr Jared Greenville said the report shows vegetable industry growth has significantly outpaced the overall ag sector over the past five decades.

“The vegetable sector has seen growth through a shift toward higher value products and improvements in the quality and convenience of what is provided,” he said.

Over the period from 1969-70 to 2020-21, the nominal value of vegetable production increased by $4.7 billion.

“Improvements in product mix and quality contributed nearly 60 per cent of that growth while general vegetable price inflation contributed 35 per cent and increased volumes 5 per cent, “Dr Greenville said.

“We are not eating greater quantities of vegetables, rather we are eating a wider range of higher quality vegetables.”

Rising incomes and changing tastes have shifted consumer demand towards higher quality, wider variety and improved convenience, with only a moderate increase in volumes.

Dr Greenville said the improvement in quality has come from a variety of sources, including improved packaging, greater consistency, more ready to eat products and greater year-round availability.

“An important experience of the vegetable sector has been the on-farm value created by effectively responding to changes in consumer preferences and the role that close relationships along supply chains have played.”

Solar panel power proving popular

Over 722,000 homes in

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said together, Queensland’s homes account to over 3.5 GW capacity, more generation capacity than the state’s two largest power stations combined, Gladstone and Stanwell.

Deputy Premier Steven Miles said a new solar system is connected every 11 minutes in Queensland.

“While rooftop solar supplied 8.9 per cent of Queensland’s total energy needs last financial year, in the middle of the day it can represent more than 40 per cent of generation,” Mr Miles said.

The number of homes with solar photovoltaic (PV) installations in the local area is divided by postcode.

In the 4350 postcode covering Toowoomba and Westbrook, there are 12,256 installations (the fourth most in Queensland) from 50,441 private dwellings, or 24.3 per cent.

In the 4352 postcode covering Wyreema, Hodgson Vale,

Council sells carpark to affordable housing project

Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) will work with notfor-profit community housing provider Brisbane Housing Company to deliver a 75 unit development in the CBD.

The new social and affordable multi-storey housing accommodation is planned for Station Street, Toowoomba.

The decision was made at last Wednesday’s (28th September) confidential Special Meeting of Council.

“Council has been devising ways to address the acute shortage of rental accommodation, especially for the social and affordable housing sector, that is representative of the tight housing and rental market across Australia,” TRC Planning and Development Committee chair Cr Megan O’Hara Sullivan said.

“Council will look for ways to re-invest the proceeds from the sale of the Station Street land into car parking or similar improvements across the CBD. The Station Street car park is rarely above 60 per cent capacity on most days.”

Highfields and other areas, there are 5,585 installations from 11,509 private dwellings, or 48.52 per cent.

In the 4358 postcode covering Cambooya, there are 386 installations from 1,230 private dwellings, or 31.39 per cent.

In the 4359 postcode covering Greenmount, there are 242 installations from 573 private dwellings, or 42.23 per cent.

In the 4360 postcode covering Nobby, there are 133 installations from 255 private dwellings, or 52.16 per cent.

TRC to explore tree planting programs

Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) will examine ways in which it can partner with the community to plant more trees in rural and urban locations.

Council endorsed a motion calling for a report into tree planting options, subject to budgetary considerations, at its September Ordinary meeting.

Planning and Development Committee chair Cr Megan O’Hara Sullivan said she envisaged a community partnership where Council and interested parties, including private landholders, would work to plant more trees across the Region.

“It is worthy to aim for an ambitious tree planting program in response to recent and past vegetation loss as a result of our expanding urban footprint,” Cr O’Hara Sullivan said.

“Landowners may clear vegetation on their property without seeking approval from Council, so long as they comply with any relevant State or Federal legislation.

“Council is looking at provisions in the new Planning Scheme to provide closer scrutiny on vegetation removal and potential complementary planting.

“There are many opportunities for tree planting programs to be positive community-building exercises.”

Cr O’Hara Sullivan said aside from the aesthetic benefits of planting appropriate species in suitable urban and district locations, there are many other positive effects that can be realised.

“Council can continue to play its part in reducing loose

TGA provisionally approves Pfizer for kids

Pfizer has announced that the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has approved provisionally the Pfizer-BioNtech Covid vaccine (COMIRNATY) for use with children aged from six months to under five years.

While children who experience Covid 19 are less likely to develop severe illness compared to adults, they are still at risk of developing severe illness and complications from Covid 19, including Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome and long Covid.

Children under 5 years also have a higher risk of diseases that overlap with Covid 19 such as pneumonia and other viral upper respiratory tract infections.

Covid remains an everyday part of our lives and the continued spread of Covid 19 in childcare and preschools also remains.

“Today’s provisional approval is an important reminder to parents to speak to their healthcare professional about Covid 19 vaccination,” Pfizer Australia and New Zealand’s Medical Director, Dr Krishan Thiru, said.

For children 6 months to 5 years old, a primary vaccination course consists of three doses of the COMIRNATY vaccine.

carbon in the atmosphere through a growing program such as this proposal,” she said.

“Tree planting can help stabilise areas, such as cleared sites along our eastern escarpment, as well as adjacent to waterways and lineal parklands that also function as stormwater conduits.

“Targeted planting programs also could help restore natural water courses that have been denuded due to various activities over the years.

“A million trees only represents five trees per man, woman and child in our population, which is currently around 190,000 people, across our growing Region.”

Cambooya State School

THE COUNTDOWN IS ON

With less than two weeks until our school’s big celebration to commemorate our 140th birthday, preparation is full steam ahead!

The Big Birthday Bash is being held at the school on Sunday 16th October 2022 from 10am to 3pm.

Cambooya State School P&C Association President Claire Fogarty said it’s going to be a fantastic day.

“We have 25 market stalls, a couple of coffee vans, and several food vans confirmed,” she said.

The P&C is running its own food van selling chips, chicken chips, burgers and of course, dagwood dogs!

“There will be heaps to keep the kids happy including mini golf, laser skirmish, giant slide, jumping castles, face painting and balloon twisting.

“And loads of soccer and handball to play too!

“People can pre-purchase unlimited ride tickets online – just go eventbrite.com.au and search for Cambooya State School.”

Cambooya State School Principal David Wilson said each of the school’s classes is running its own fun stall, organised by the teachers and students.

“You’ll be able to enjoy lolly guess, lucky dip, lob a choc, lucky squares, bottle stall, stress balls and heaps more.

“We have an amazing crew of teachers at our school and I can’t wait to see everyone from the community come along and take part in the day,” he said.

We’ve had wonderful support from our community to help make this event happen –thank you to Toowoomba Regional Council and Westbrook Family Medical Centre for sponsoring the event, and Homestyle Bakeries for supplying bread rolls for the P&C food van.

Sunday breakfast with jazz on the menu

If you like the idea of a leisurely Sunday breakfast with live jazz music set in an historic railway carriage then Toowoomba Hospice has a fund raising event that might whet your appetite.

The Hospice is holding its Annual Charity Jazz Breakfast on Sunday 30th October commencing 9am at the DownStream Railway Museum on the corner of Bell and Cambooya Streets, Drayton.

Tickets are $40 and this provides a cooked breakfast with either tea or coffee, juice and fruit with entertaining jazz music while providing the opportunity for a tour of the historic railway carriages.

Proceeds of the event will help Toowoomba Hospice continue to provide safe quality care for those with a terminal illness while also providing palliative and respite care based on mutual respect, trust and individual needs to a variety of clients and their loved ones.

For further information or to book tickets phone Amy or Mark on 4659 8500.

Spooky sweet for Halloween

Halloween is popularly celebrated locally, particularly at Wyreema, where the locals get right into it!

In the face of a challenging season for a fruit that takes 18 months to harvest, Queensland pineapple growers are urging Aussies to carve a pineapple for Halloween this year.

Pure Gold Pineapples says Australians wanting to support their local industry should pick a pineapple instead of a pumpkin to carve as their Australian Halloween tradition.

Anthony Dobson, General Manager of Tropical Pines, said the Spooky Pines custom, introduced six years ago, had grown in popularity.

“Last year we saw a great take up of Spooky Pines and we’re thrilled that the community is really starting to embrace this new Halloween tradition,” he said.

Carving a pineapple doesn’t leave any waste - you can eat the flesh of the pine straight away, refrigerate it to use in your favourite recipe, or freeze it for smoothies.

Pure Gold Pineapples has released a limited edition Spooky Pines with a QR code for carving instructions.
