An Olympic visit

Recently out of quarantine on his way home from Tokyo, Olympic runner Patrick Tiernan paid a visit to Bunker’s Hill State School, where his father Jim Tiernan is the Principal. Tiernan finished 19th in the 10,000 metres in Tokyo with a time of 28:35:06 and received global news coverage when he collapsed 150 metres before the finish line. Tiernan stumbled and crawled his way to the finish line, determined to do the best he could. He is now a dual Olympian, having previously competed at the 2016 Rio Olympics, as well as the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, multiple world championships and the 2011 Oceania Youth Championships where he won silver. Born in Longreach, Tiernan’s passion for long distance running started at a young age. His family moved to the Toowoomba Region, where he enjoyed a lot of success in cross country and track and field in his school years. After finishing school, Tiernan was offered a scholarship to Villanova University in the USA. After a successful college career, he became a professional athlete and has represented Australia at multiple World Championships. He is the current Australian record holder for the 10000m. Tiernan’s visit to Bunker’s Hill was well received, as the students were awe-struck by his presence. He will be returning to his training base in the USA next week to begin preparations for the next Olympic Games in Paris which are three years away.

Plenty of help for National Tree Day at Westbrook

There were plenty of hands on deck for National Tree Day at Westbrook Park and nearby Centenary Park on Saturday.

The volunteers - some of whom are pictured above - included locals, a contingent from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at Toowoomba, Warwick, Marburg and Ipswich, Councillors Megan O’Hara Sullivan and Melissa Taylor and a team of Toowoomba Regional Council parks and gardens staff. Below, Samuel Wong, Samuel Gilkes and Sarah Wong are working with Cr O’Hara Sullivan.

We also had an awesome Poetry Competition as well as a Colouring Competition. Our students also took the opportunity to share their books with their peers and we loved hearing our children read to their peers or share the ‘best bits’ of their books with us. Our aim was to inspire someone to pick up a book and to read, and we are sure we have achieved this goal.

Councillors not happy with new branch

The move to create a new ‘Business Transformation and Strategy Branch’ of Toowoomba Regional Council has come under fire from Councillor Nancy Sommerfield. Cr Sommerfield was one of three Councillors, along with Crs Melissa Taylor and Rebecca Vonhoff who voted against the proposal. The deliberations on the formation of new branch were confidential with minimal information able to be released to the public including the anticipated cost of additional staff and resources. Cr Sommerfield came out after the vote, publicly voicing her opposition to the proposal. She said the new branch would sit directly under the Chief Executive Officer‘s (CEO) office and could bring with it a high level of power and wages. “The debate was held in confidential session and therefore I am limited to what I can say about the debate other than to say that I spoke passionately against it,” Cr Sommerfield said. “What I will say is I feel that Council’s decision to make the organisation more top heavy at more cost, to ironically find cost saving efficiencies, has potential to reduce services on the ground for our residents.” Cr Sommerfield said she believed the decision to establish a new branch was done without proper consultation with staff members which could potentially be impacted by the decision. “I also feel that staff weren’t given a safe avenue to be heard. “I believe there was a cheaper alternative way to find effective efficiencies,” she said. It is still not clear exactly what the duties of new branch will be, with staff expected to take on roles reviewing the current service delivery. The idea to create a new branch was discussed by Council earlier in the year under the name, “Service Delivery and Sustainability Branch”. Finance and Business Strategy Committee Chair Cr Geoff McDonald said the branch will work alongside and assist all functional areas of Council to provide strategic assistance, analysis and support.

Grain storage success starts now

Now that spring is here, storage specialists from Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) say there is no time to lose to ensure grain storage facilities are prepared and ready. GRDC Grain Storage Extension project co-ordinator Chris downtime in winter to Warrick is encouraging growers to start maintenance and maintain storages, especially check on storage facilities to help set up for a successful when it comes to hygiene harvest. and structural treatments. Weather conditions are indicating a strong chance of mice “Preventing issues is always better than dealing with them,” activity being rampant in spring and into summer. Mr Warrick said. Minister for Agriculture and Northern Australia David GRDC’s key tips for grain storage include using aeration Littleproud said there were several options for farmers cooling with the aim of having two to four litres of air per impacted by the mouse infestation. second per tonne of grain storage capacity, as well as using “We’ve had good rain and are looking at a bumper harvest, and unfortunately these conditions are perfect for mice,” Mr Littleproud said. “Taking action early will be important to keep mouse numbers down. “It’s important that farmers get out into the paddocks to look for damage or other signs of mice such as active burrows, and to act at the first signs of activity.” The Minister suggested primary producers may be able to claim an immediate deduction for capital expenditure on fodder storage assets, such as silos and hay sheds. Spring is here

Page 9

There’s no time like springtime

Spring is here and that means it is time to get outdoors during the warm sunny days and give some tender loving care to the garden. As we should hopefully be seeing the end of early morning frosts for this year, this a good opportunity to start getting your lawn looking picture perfect for summer. To aerate your lawn, garden forks are essential. A weed killer should be used in early spring, followed by a lawn fertiliser a few weeks down the track to ensure grass continues on its upward trajectory and weeds are kept at bay. If you are planting grass from seed to fill in patches or a whole new section, it is best to establish grass in late spring, once the soil has warmed up but before the scorching hot summer days. If any dying or dead winter leaves are left on your trees and shrubs, make sure to remove them to encourage new growth. The same principle applies to hedges. Trimming should be started on shrubs that flower in summer, hydrangea and hibiscus for example, to maximise the chance of perfect blooms. If left too late, buds might be cut off accidentally. Sungrown Nursery in Toowoomba will be able to provide for you across a wide variety of gardening needs. Their product range is vast, including fruit trees and vines, seedlings and vegetables, ornamental trees, roses, indoor plants and succulents. Apart from flora itself, they sell pots, mulch, potting mix and giftware, so you can cover your gardening needs in one trip.

Past entrants in the Iris and Rose Show.

With a bit of time and effort, a colourful garden like this one in Ramsay in achievable.

Time to Rose The perennially popular rose will be featuring in many gardens throughout the district this spring. Although some keen gardeners spend many hours perfecting the conditions for their roses, especially those entering the upcoming Iris and Rose Show and others featuring in the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers, growing a beautiful looking rose is not as hard as you may think. Whether you are looking at planting roses for the first time or need just a tip or two to perfect your roses, Sungrown Nursery will be able to help you out. They have well over 100 varieties of roses available from Newer Hybrid Teas and David Austin Roses to French Roses and Heritage Roses. Their team will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have about growing roses, including what fertilisers to use, how to manage pests and diseases and sucker growth.

Age no barrier

Beryl Muller at 100-years-old has broken the record for the oldest passenger on a trike for local company, Darling Downs Trike Tours. Beryl was one of over 20 Yukana residents who jumped at the opportunity to go for a joyride on the motorised tricycle. Residents take in the sights on a scenic tour, winding their way around Rangeville streets and back again. Family members were also invited to share the experience with their loved one. Beryl was clearly delighted to go for a spin. “This is a first for both of us,” she said when boarding the trike with daughter-inlaw, Helen (both pictured). Tour company co-owner Terry Gilchrist was thrilled to have the centenarian and other residents aboard. The company has put a raft of measures in place to cater for riders of all ages and abilities. “Previously the record for our oldest passenger was held by a 90-year-old,” he said. “At 100 years of age, Beryl just goes to show that age is no barrier.”

Wattles’ season over

Despite finishing second on the ladder after the home and away season and two finals played at home, the Wattles Warriors A-Grade side has bowed out of the 2021 TRL competition following a 32-25 defeat to Highfields. A packed Platz Oval witnessed one of the games of the season as the match went down to the wire, with extra time needed to split the teams.. The match was not without some administrative concern that has led the Wattles Club to make a complaint to Toowoomba Rugby League (TRL) relating to extra time-frames. While ten minutes each way was played with the scores locked at the 80 minute mark, Wattles hierarchy maintain the season standard and rule for the finals series states that extra time is to be five minutes each way. As of Tuesday morning, the matter was still under consideration with the Warriors complaint possibly advancing further up the Queensland Rugby League dispute chain. The match had it all and more, a semi-final by any standard, and when full time sounded the scoreboard was locked at 24-all. The score remained locked for the initial ten minutes of extra time, but soon after the resumption Matt Duggan found the sweet spot with his boot to post a 91st minute field goal to have Wattles in front for the first time since the 6th minute. Soon after, Highfields sealed victory though when fullback Jarrod Lee scrambled over to score. Highfields 32 defeated Wattles 25 (Matt Christensen 2, Brendon McBryde, Matt Duggan, Steve Elliott tries Matt Duggan 2 goals and a field goal) RESERVE GRADE Wattles’ reserve grade team kept its Clive Berghofer Land Sales Reserve Grade premiership finals aspirations alive with a convincing 32-12 win over the Highfields Eagles, the Warriors defence was superb throughout. In front of a home crowd Wattles led 18-0 at half time and then 26-0 before Highfields scored two tries to threaten at 26-12. Co–Coach/skipper Garth Lonergan led by example while centre Darby Peardon, running forward Jordan Henry and two try winger Mitch Bourke also shone. Wattles 32 (Mitchell Bourke 2, Brendan Wilson, Joe Morris, Garth Lonergan, Jordan Henry tries Thomas Morris 4 goals) defeated Highfields 12 THIS WEEK Preliminary Final – This Sunday, 12th September Venue - Clive Berghofer Stadium, Toowoomba Reserve Grade - Valleys vs. Wattles 1pm A Grade - Valleys vs. Highfields 2.30pm - Glyn Rees
