Felton District Histories is out now
Continued from page 2 Mr Whan said the first chapter was his favourite to write, including explaining what squatters are and exploring closer settlement on the Darling Downs. “I really did enjoy researching how settlers came to the area,” he said. The journey of James Tyson was equally interesting to him. “It is a fascinating story about one man’s determination to accumulate land and wealth,” he said. Mr Whan first became attached to the Felton community in 1992 when he bought a 100 acre property. Although he worked in Brisbane until ten years ago, Mr Whan said he maintained his Felton property to visit on the weekend. “I feel a strong attachment to the land and country people,” Mr Whan said. Since his book was printed a few weeks ago, Mr Whan said
he has already received a lot of positive feedback from the public. “People seem to be enjoying it a lot. “They have said it gave them a sense of how Felton opened up,” he said. Felton District Histories is available to be purchased for $20 from the offices of The Clifton Courier and The Pittsworth Sentinel. An official book launch is to be held at Rudd’s Pub in Nobby on Friday 25 June at midday.

The Genesis IEX Water Softening System
(9 Systems to choose from)
‘Bruce owner of AquaGuard knew exactly the quality of water out here and recommended/sold us an IEX or Ion Exchange Water Softening System for the whole house. The System removes the hard minerals totally making it impossible for them to build up in pipes and appliances. He said that breaking them down is simply shifting the problem from one place in a home to another. I’ve heard many complaints about the water quality here and about replacing appliances annually including hot water systems

With our system we have not had any calcium build up in the bathrooms, kitchen, laundry etc. While a lot of companies are recommending a particular system for our area, Bruce at AquaGuard is the only one who knew the quality of the water and the right system to use. We could not be happier with our choice and highly recommend AquaGuard’

Hodgsonvale Community Sports Club
GENERAL MEETING The June general meeting is on this Thursday the 10th of June at 7pm, the hall is heated and will be turned on for the comfort of attendees. TENNIS There is no club social tennis at night at the moment, but the tennis courts are now available for hire as long as all users follow the social distancing rules. The key to the courts is now back at the Spar shop. There is only one key for the courts themselves, the toilet key has been removed and hirers and patrons are asked to use the toilets at the Lions Park, as they are cleaned and serviced regularly at the moment for the Coronavirus. Members are charged $4 an hour and for non-members it is $8 an hour. There is an extra $2 an hour charge for the lights if they are used. The padlock is to be cleaned at the tennis courts on
departure and the key and tag is to be cleaned on return from the tennis courts to the shop -there are disinfection wipes freely available at the Spar for this purpose, ask at the counter. The nice sunny days in winter are just right for playing tennis so if you can get a group together come along and enjoy the facilities. HALL HIRE The club is open for private functions, so to do an inspection and make a booking please contact Terry on 0431 014 618, also you can check our website to see what facilities are available etc. or you can send an email to hcsc8315@gmail.com Any bookings will be subject to Covid restrictions and may have to be cancelled at short notice if government Covid rules require this. MEMBERSHIP Memberships for 2021/2022 can now be paid and remain at $25 for a family. - Ted Cavanagh

Bunker’s Hill State School A TASTY WINTER WARMER On Tuesday 1st June, Bunker’s Hill State School Project Club held a hot chocolate day to celebrate the first day of winter. The committee sold 220 cups of delicious hot chocolate and raised $494. We would like to thank Pittsworth Woolworths for donating most of the ingredients, they saved us a lot of money! The Project Club Committee was very happy with the profits raised and is now considering what to spend the money on. Ideas so far are a net to place behind the football posts to catch the balls, a cubby house for our younger students and an extra playground. We’d like to thank the staff for helping organise the day,

Queensland reported the highest average loss of any state of territory, with 3,864 reports with loss averaging $8,329.26. The national top three scams in 2020, by the amount lost, were investment, dating and romance and false billing scams. Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Shannon Fentiman wants Queenslanders to protect themselves from scammers who do not discriminate in who they target, or how they operate. “Scamming is big business and our best defence against these con artists is to understand their modus operandi and be alert to spotting new scam trends,” Ms Fentiman said. “In 2020, the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) noted an increase in reports of scams during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly fake online stores, phone calls by scammers pretending to be from trusted organisations or government agencies, scams via email and text, and itinerant trader scams.” Scammers are always finding new ways to take people’s money, with losses by Queenslanders up from $27.3 million in 2019 to $32.1 million in 2020. “While the report revealed that Queenslanders reported more than 39,000 scams to Scamwatch, research shows that 33 percent of people who lose money to a scam will not report it – so figures in this report underestimate the extent of the loss,” Ms Fentiman said. For every scam reported by Queenslanders that involved a financial loss, the average loss was almost $8,330, which makes Queensland the state with the highest average loss. Scam numbers continue to rise and scammers are always refining their tactics and techniques to get consumers to fall for their ploys. “If something seems not right with a phone call, an email, text or a pop-up, the take time to consider who you dealing with,” Ms Fentiman said.. Despite the best efforts of the Pittsworth Danes in the dying minutes of the match, the Wattles Warriors defence held strong to secure a 34-32 victory. It was a day of celebration at Platz Oval on Sunday, the Warriors hosting their 2021 Ladies Day as a fundraiser for the club’s Ambassador Louisa Christensen, as well as an event to recognise the club’s many female volunteers and club supporters. There were a few furrowed brows on Warriors supporters faces when centre Harry Cooke blazed avenues through the Wattles’ defence racking up an impressive hat trick of tries to have Pittsworth ahead 14–0 of the green and gold outfit that out-gunned Valleys last week 25 – 12. Considering the country cousin Danes have just two wins from eight outings this season, they were looking very slick on the Warriors home turf. Not to be outdone the Warriors played a couple of aces that led to touchdowns by front-rower Michael (Bugsy) Pearson and winger Braydon Wilson to trail 12-14 before a Jackson Green try allowed Wattles an 18-14 advantage by half time. After it appeared in the early stages as though the Danes were going to rain on Wattles’ party, they returned for the second stanza in a similar frame of mind. Front-rower James Quinn found an opening to score allowing the Danes to edge back to be 20–18 leaders. Wattles’ front rower Mitch Duff added a try to his season total for his side to rebound back to a 24–20 lead, but the Danes weren’t tossing the towel in just yet, a Brett Wilson fourpointer seeing the lead swing back Club Pittsworth way. A couple of tries by last line Green and finisher Wilson finally saw Wattles grab an upper hand on the scoreboard, even if it appeared flimsy, to snatch the game helm 34–26. While no hefty people sang, the game certainly wasn’t over until it was over as Pittsworth ran in a final converted try in the dying moments, running second in a nail-biting contest. Danes in form fullback Chris Woodbridge maintained his shining consistency of late with another polished performance. While a courageous performance by Michael Pearson secured him Player of the Match honours, the experience of aging warhorse and player/coach Travis Burns was a vital. His influence against high rollers Valleys last week, his first match back from a three-match suspension, again surfaced against the Danes as he rallied his troops to collect the premiership points. The hard-earned win has seen Wattles hurdle into the top five, their season so far, while scratchy, appears now in focus. Wattles 34 (Braydon Wilson 2, Jackson Green 2, Michael Pearson, Mitch Duff, tries: Travis Burns 5 goals) defeated Pittsworth 32 (Harry Cooke 3, Brett Wilson 2, James Quinn tries Chris Woodbridge 2, Tom O’Sullivan 2 goals) RESERVE GRADE Wattles 44 (Lachlan Henry 2, Alex Morris, Brenden Wilson, Darby Peardon, Joe Morris, Tom Duggan, Ben Duff tries; Tom Morris 6 goals) defeated Pittsworth 12. UNDER 18 Pittsworth 36 defeated Wattles 24 (Jake Meddleton 3, Lachlan Stroud tries; Jake Meddleton 4 goals). - Glyn Rees
