A tractor ride to celebrate a milestone

Continued from page 1 Rex and Maria Gretton from Vale View, alongside their friends Murray and Vickie Walker from Warwick, visited the Clifton Jam Factory for lunch last Thursday to celebrate PTY LTD Mrs Gretton’s birthday which, funnily enough, coincides Trading as DJL Building Group with the same day they bought their tractor almost ten years ago. QBSA LIC NO: 150 29085 The group jokingly said these little trips have become somewhat of a disease and they’re certainly not going to get New Homes & Renovations tired of them any time soon. “The best part of this is you actually get in touch with the Insurance Work countryside more,” Mrs Walker said. Office: 4696 3156 MOBILE: 0408 480 334 PO Box 7380 “You get to smell the air, people wave to you and you’re Mobile: 0408 480 334 just more in tune with your community. DAILY LIVING SKILLS “Neither of us have gone thousands of kilometres at once just yet because the tractors don’t have suspension,” Mrs INDIVIDUAL COUNSELLING Walker said. + PSYCHOSOCIAL RECOVERY “When we went down to Kyogle you’d hit your head on COACHING [FOR SELF-MANAGED the roof every time you hit a big pot hole. PARTICIPANTS] “They’re good though because they originally made them Contact Alison to discuss your needs or to make an appointment: so you could take your woman to church on Sunday and 0405 179 479 plough the paddock on the Monday so that was why Servicing Toowomba, Chamberlain originally made them with the bench seat so Warwick & towns inbetween both of you could fit in there.” The Walkers and Grettons are part of The Grainshed Machinery Group which operates out of the historic rail grain shed at Freestone. The group will be holding a two-day Tractor Trek on May 22 and 23. Day one will consist of travelling from the Freestone Grain Shed through to the scenic Goomburra Valley with camping Keeping it Local overnight at the Allora Showgrounds. FAMILY OWNED AND OPERATED On day two the group will head off to view two private JUSTIN AND GRETTA BARTON STOCKIST car collections before returning to the grainshed via Warwick. Council tackling staff abuse

Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) has launched an education campaign to increase respect for its workforce and to help minimise threats made to staff by members of the public. In 2020, Council reported an increase in the frequency and severity of staff being threatened or abused while doing their job throughout the community. The campaign, ‘Our People – your friends, family and neighbours’ aims to humanise TRC’s workforce and help members of the public understand that while they work for Council, they’re also people and members of the Region. Mayor Paul Antonio said it was disappointing that some staff had been threatened for doing their job but he hoped the ‘Our People’ campaign would showcase how staff deserved the same respect as everyone else. “Everything our people do is for our community,” he said. “Our people are our greatest asset and they have a right to do their work free from intimidation, abuse and threats, regardless of what job they’re performing.” “I’m excited that we’re launching a campaign to not only showcase the great work of our staff but also to highlight that they’re just people, like everyone else.” TRC Chief Executive Officer Brian Pidgeon said the ‘Our People’ campaign was a great initiative that had the joint support from Council’s Leadership Team and the Unions that represent Council’s employees. “This is a campaign which recognises the dedication of our workforce and creates greater understanding of the person behind the uniform,” he said. “It’s important to our organisation that we ensure we’re doing whatever we can to make our staff feel safe and supported while they’re working.” To find out more about the ‘Our People’ campaign, visit www.tr.qld.gov.au/ourpeople

Farm technology developed by the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) will soon be in use on John Deere machinery. It is the result of a research collaboration focused largely on developing technologies for smart precision agriculture. The latest John Deere See & Spray line-up will include the University of Southern Queensland-developed technology including real time machine vision-based plant detection techniques for spraying weeds. The partnership is enabling USQ research to help lift farm productivity and develop the next generation of agricultural technologies – including machine automation and smart farm equipment. The weed spray technology, originally funded through a combination of industry research projects between Sugar Research Australia, Cotton Research and Development Corporation, Hort Innovation and USQ, has informed the latest product offering from John Deere. The USQ Centre for Agricultural Engineering Director, Professor Craig Baillie, said the technology development was an excellent example of Australian research and innovation having global application and impact while also enabling Australian farmers to be at the forefront of agtech developments around the world. “The University of Southern Queensland has a long history of focusing research on local farming issues that have relevance to Australian farmers and connecting this with large overseas markets and equipment manufacturers,” Professor Baillie said. “This collaboration is a prime example of working with both growers and manufacturers to create outcomes that will benefit the agricultural industry both here and internationally. “We work with industry and focus on solving problems through engineering solutions that will transform farming practices. “Our research is outcome-driven. “This is the heart of what our team does.” The weed spray technology will save growers herbicide costs while minimising environmental impacts due to a reduction in chemical application. Typical herbicide savings through this technology are greater than 70 per cent.

The function on Friday night saw a good crowd attending on another beautiful evening. The members’ draw worth $20 saw member No.18 come out, belonging to Gavin Dunlop who was not there so the jackpot goes up to $40 this week. Colin’s own special chicken dish was great and enjoyed by all. This week it will be Helen and Terry’s Irish Stew for $10. We will be having an Irish night this Friday the 12th of March in anticipation of St Patrick’s Day. There will be Guinness, Killkenny, Father O’Learys and a bit of the Bailey’s and there might even be a couple of Irish tunes played, so keep an eye out for that. There will be prizes for the best dressed male and female Irish outfits, so get in the mode and wear your best Irish outfit with plenty of green. The tennis courts are open on a Friday night and are free to use for patrons while the function is on. Wednesday night social tennis has returned starting at 6pm under the lights. Contact Deb on 0409 781 925 for further details. There is now a ladies keep fit session available at the sports club starting at 5.30am to 6.30am on Tuesday mornings. Please contact Keleigh on mobile 0419 967 707 or on email info@ konnectfit.com.au for more details. Cost is $10 a session. The tennis courts are now available for hire as long as all users follow the social distancing rules. The key to the courts is now back at the Spar shop. There is only one key for the courts themselves, the toilet key has been removed and hirers and patrons are asked to use the toilets at the Lions Park, as they are cleaned and serviced regularly at the moment for the Corona virus. Members are charged $4 an hour and for non members it is $8 an hour. The padlock is to be cleaned at the tennis courts on departure and the key and tag is to be cleaned on return from the tennis courts to the shop. There are disinfection wipes freely available at the Spar for this purpose - ask at the counter. The club is now open for private functions so to do an inspection and make a booking please contact Terry on 0431 014 618, also you can check out our website to see what facilities are available etc. or you can send an email to hcsc8315@ gmail.com Any bookings will be subject to restrictions and may have to be cancelled at short notice if government Covid rules require this. - Ted Cavanagh

Wattles ready to run

This Saturday at Clifton’s Platz Oval the two Southern Downs teams, Wattles and Cowboys, meet for the first time since last year in the pre-season Barrett Family Shield contest won by Warwick. It is unusual that the two neighbouring clubs face up twice in a pre-season, but with a Wattles trial against Gympie cancelled and Moree becoming unavailable for an arranged trial against Warwick, coaches Matt Grew and Wattles’ Travis Burns considered a second Warwick/Wattles trial a better alternative than no second trial. This Saturday’s local derby will herald the opening of the Toowoomba Rugby League season for Warwick and Wattles. The first Round of the official season fixtures kicks off on April 10th and 11th with the top four teams of 2019, the last officially completed TRL season, pitched against each other. Aside from the trials against Warwick, Saturday is Wattles initial fundraiser of the year with the league program followed by Wattles Annual Pig Races. Match kick-off times: midday - Under 18; 1.30pm - Reserve Grade; 3pm - First Grade.
