Tom Campbell from Mt Rascal and goalkeeper Dan Burge from Vale View, along with Oliver Harding and Will Ready (Toowoomba) were selected in addition to Savanah Trapp (Toowoomba) as members of the squad. Australian National pathway selectors were present in Cairns and from the 10 male and 10 female teams (approximately 320 athletes), they selected an Australian

Hockey Australia says the pick of Australian male and female hockey Under 18 talent who will be at their peak to succeed at the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games have been selected in the 2022 Men’s and Women’s Futures Squads. The national identification scholarship pathway for which they were chosen is a performance-based, twelve month opportunity for those selected to be coached, mentored and guided by staff and athletes involved and appointed by Hockey Australia. This will culminate in a week-long invitational camp at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra. The selection of five players from the local region is an unprecedented representation of Toowoomba Hockey Junior talent, identified as potential future Australian players.

Affordable Housing Initiative Independent candidate for Groom Kirstie Smolenski says
some ‘outside the box’ thinking could revolutionise how Australians look at home ownership. Ms Smolenski says with younger generations in particular facing difficult if not impossible odds in attaining the ‘Australian Dream’ of home ownership, with rental rates high and available rental housing stock as low as 0.3 per cent in regions like Toowoomba, Australians may have reached a point where a new model will need to be adopted to maintain social cohesion. She said before superannuation, purchasing a family home was one of the safest ways to ensure we held financial security in the form of a profitable asset when reaching retirement. However, history demonstrates that bubbles can burst when there is simply no one left to push the price of the family home any higher and even if demand is high, costs can become prohibitive which can lead to many social issues that arise through mortgage or rent stress in family lives. “We are potentially facing such a reality right now, as rising interest rates threaten to take their toll on mortgages across the country.” Ms Smolenski says to reduce the entry cost of home ownership will require a two pronged approach. The first step is to provide land via a leasehold arrangement with the security of a long term lease, wherein ultimate ownership is retained by the Crown, but tenants have the security of tenure to be able to build with confidence. The second prong is to dramatically lower building costs by developing factory built homes to stringent environmental standards and conditions. Homes pre-manufactured in a factory then assembled onsite are far less prone to building defects or sudden price spikes that existing building models often attract, putting private builders under financial stress even before Bigger their house is fully built. Only nominal site works Better and connection to services are required with the model, Variety and the use of screwed auger foundations deployed to facilitate speed and cost reduction. The turnkey cost of a new home using this approach should approximately halve the current cost of a new home build, and greatly reduce the time frame. Drayton 0405 617 837 Ms Smolenski said with its unique access to suitable Oakey 0415 331 969 land in the district, the Northpoint 0404 778 729 inland rail almost a reality, and a vibrant industrial Highfields 0406 001 839 sector, Groom can become Dalby 0405 861 923 the pilot centre for such an innovative concept.

Stolen, burnt vehicles more prevalent
The number of stolen vehicles which are being set on fire is causing concern for authorities. Across the district, isolated, and in some cases not so isolated, roads are becoming the site for offenders to dump vehicles that have been stolen. Before the offenders decamp, they set fire to the vehicle in an effort to destroy any evidence which may lead to the identification of the thieves. In a recent case, Police were called to reports of a vehicle on fire near East Drews Road at Westbrook just after 5.30am last Friday morning. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found no one inside the utility or anyone needing medical attention. Further investigations revealed that the vehicle had been stolen from a Harristown address overnight. The vehicle’s owner was notified and the vehicle has been recovered. Investigations are ongoing. Local police continue to issue warnings to owners to ensure that vehicles are locked and that keys are not easily accessible for would-be thieves.

Heritage Weekend off
The Allora Heritage Weekend for 2022 has been cancelled. Due to the soggy conditions at the Allora Showgrounds and the forecast of more heavy rain, the President, Graeme McMillan and the organising committee have cancelled the Heritage Weekend which was to have been held this Saturday and Sunday, 14th and 15th May. The call had to be made early so that exhibitors could be contacted before they travelled to Allora. The event is normally held in January but this year it was postponed due to Covid. However the President said it will definitely go ahead on 28th and 29th January 2023 as the work has already been done in readiness for next year.

Region fails to rate in top tourism awards
The Toowoomba Region has failed to score a jersey among areas competing for top honours in the 2022 Queensland Top Tourism Town Awards. There have been 23 tourism towns short-listed for the final judging, but none from this neck of the woods. The closest nominees to this region are Marburg and Kalbar in the category for tourism towns with a population of less than 1500, Boonah for towns with a population of between 1500 and 5000, and Tamborine Mountain for towns with a population in excess of 5000. Presented by the Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC), the Awards program recognises and celebrates Queensland’s outstanding regional destinations, honoring communities across the state who demonstrate a commitment to visitor excellence. After an exhaustive judging process by an expert panel, QTIC CEO Brett Fraser says that the Top Tourism Town Award winners will now be decided by the public. With public voting now open and closing on Monday 23rd May, Queensland’s top tourism destinations will be announced on 13th June at an awards ceremony in Brisbane. Holidaymakers and weekend warriors can vote for their favourite destinations at https://www.qtic.com.au/top-tourismaward/top-town-voting/ All Queensland Award winners will gain automatic entry to the national Top Tourism Town Awards held later in the year, where they will have the chance to be crowned the best holiday destinations in Australia. THERE’S NO JOY ON BUSINESS ADVISORY COUNCIL EITHER The Toowoomba Region also fails to rate when it comes to membership of the State Government’s new Small Business Advisory Council. Minister for Employment and Small Business Di Farmer claims the ten-member Advisory Council reflects the breadth and depth of the sector throughout the state. Four of the members are from the Brisbane metropolitan area, five are from coastal centres stretching from the Gold Coast to Cairns and just one is from inland Queensland.

Dairy farmers need a least a 10c/L increase
Co CEO of eastAUSmilk, Eric Danzi has called for an increase of at least ten cents a litre for east coast dairy farmers from 1st July. In eastAUSmilk’s regular newsletter to farmers and “Large increases in the cost of fertiliser, fuel, chemicals and industry players, Mr Danzi said there have been massive labour has had a substantial effect on the cost of producing increases in costs in the dairy industry over the past year as milk both for farmers and processors,” he said. there have been across the broader economy. “On top of this, many dairy farmers, and processors, have been very badly affected by flooding and continual wet weather putting further pressure on profitability.” Mr Danzi said from a farmer perspective, this means that for the majority of farmers costs have probably gone up by between 10 and 15 cents a litre. “There continues to be farmer exodus from the industry on a weekly basis and there are no signs of this slowing down without a major shift in price,” he said. “Production across Australia is down by 3 per cent so far this financial year and processors are desperately short of milk. “Dairy farmers are not whinging for more money knowing that they will still continue to produce milk. “Dairy farmers on mass are waiting to see what price increases will be offered before deciding whether to continue producing milk. “There are plenty of attractive options for dairy farmers now besides just continuing to produce milk for little or no margin. “The returns from beef are extremely strong and there is the opportunity to grow and sell crops rather than feed them to cows.” Mr Danzi said options to sell or lease farms are also attractive. “It is very positive to see some processors paying additional money to farmers in May and June this year in light of the Cars-Boats-Caravans-Lounges substantial financial pressures on farmers, however a five -Antique Furniture cents a litre increase on 1 July would not even come close to what is required,” he said. “The bottom line is that if farmers don’t receive at least another 10 cents a litre, it is very likely that the shortage of 80 Hampton St Toowoomba milk will increase.” Ph: 4633 1654 | M: 0431 144 822 Mr Danzi said it is much harder and more expensive to www.gardencityautotrimming.com.au attract farmers back into the industry than to keep them there Stephen by offering an attractive price to stay. Police urge caution
With severe weather with intense rainfall and potential flash flooding in many parts of Queensland police are urging the community against complacency and are advising people to stay up to date and stay informed. Tragically, severe weather and flooding has seen motorists, pedestrians and boaties loose their lives this year with police pleading with the public to heed the warnings and advice of authorities and to re-think their need to travel during intense, heavy or persistent rainfall. Intense rain, damaging winds and embedded severe thunderstorm activity can result in extremely hazardous conditions on roadways. Trying to navigate these hazards, either in vehicles or on foot, is extremely dangerous, as we have sadly already witnessed, as water levels rise and fall quickly. Members of the public are urged to avoid roads, creeks and bridges likely to be impacted by rapidly rising water, storm debris and flood damage. Motorists are also reminded that road closures and road conditions can and do change rapidly, often within minutes. If driving travel with extreme caution and drive to the prevailing weather and road conditions – plan your trip, allow additional travel time, incorporating travelling at lower speeds, delays and diversions and remember: If It’s Flooded: Forget It and just Back it Up. Importantly, re-think your need to be on the roads as flash flooding can and does occur without warning, washing away roads, bridges and vehicles. Motorists can easily, and unintentionally, find themselves swept away. Parents are also reminded to ensure their children are not playing in flood prone waterways, watercourses and drains. Stay up to date with the latest Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) warnings including flood warnings and river levels – and Know your weather: Know your risk It is also important to monitor the Toowoomba Regional Council dashboard and local media.

THE MARCH VOLUNTEERS OF THE MONTH ARE
Ted Cavanagh This month we recognise the work of Hodgson Vale resident Ted Cavanagh for his role as secretary of the Hodgsonvale Community Sports Club (HCSC).
established a great link with club members and the community through a regular column in On Our Selection News.
Coming from a community-minded family brought up in the Allora district, volunteering is probably second nature to Ted. As anyone who has filled a similar role would know, being secretary of an organisation is one of the busiest volunteer jobs around.
It’s a job usually taken up by a publicity officer, but Ted handles it well, aiming to maintain and increase the local interest in this very valuable facility at Hodgson Vale.
Apart from the bookwork such a keeping minutes and correspondence up to date, Ted Cavanagh has also

MAYORAL MORNING TEA I want to acknowledge our outstanding school leaders, Ashlee and Noah for representing our school with such distinction during this year’s Mayoral Morning Tea held on the 17th of March. Both leaders enjoyed the experience, and I was impressed by how well they communicated their leadership messages back to our school community. The occasion is always a valued event on the school calendar and one I enjoy attending with the students. - Joel Fogwell, Principal

Last year Westbrook photographer Margaret Kebble was named winner for ‘I will get it right’ (above) which was inspired by seeing her pet parrot playing with a Rubik’s cube. The competition’s top two main prizes of $15,000 each, the Open Category and the Theme Category, which this year has the theme ‘Belonging’. Photographers from the Toowoomba Region have further incentive to enter the competition, with the Alwyn Kucks Memorial Award on offer for entrants residing within a 50 kilometre radius of Toowoomba. Other sections include three youth categories: 9 years or younger; 10-13; and 14-17 years. Entries in this year’s awards close on 24th June. Winners will be advised in July and finalist images will feature in an exhibition from the 12th of September. Details are at heritage.com.

Wattles Warriors outperform Eagles
Wattles’ top grade players confirmed on Sunday that they are well in the running to be considered a genuine force to be reckoned with as they rolled fellow premiership threats the Highfields Eagles 20 to 13 in at the Eagles nest in Highfields. The first stanza on Sunday saw a try apiece scored through the Warriors speedster Aaron Hooper and home side star Nick Bainbridge, but it was a field goal by Eagles’ half Cory McGrady that saw the home side head to the dressing room ahead 7-6 at half time. Full-back Campbell Stewart touched down for Highfields five minutes into the second stanza to allow the Eagles a 13-6 lead. While Highfields looked to go on with their advantage, it was the Warriors that lifted courtesy of a Matt Duggan try after a superb Burns kick. Trailing 12-13 Wattles were successful with a penalty goal before Crocker touched down running off Duggan in the dying moments of the match. While captain/coach Burns pulled up a touch sore, “We finished with no injuries, but Austin Jennings has a way to go to be back to his incisive best,” he said. “Pittsworth are always tough, and while we’re winning, we can play a lot better.” The focus at training this week is ball control and finishing sets, “simple but vital” suggests the mentor. RESERVE GRADE Forwards Tim Duggan and Ben Duff took the charge to the Eagles in what resulted in a disappointing loss for the Tony Morris Tiling Wattles reserve graders after an inspiring start to the 2022 season. Wattles went down to the tune of 24 to 14. UNDER 19 Wattles Under 19 team was no match for Highfields who snatched a 30-6 winning result on the back of a six try to one advantage. THIS WEEKEND This Saturday at Platz Oval the action will be kicking off at 3.30pm with the Under 19s, Reserve Grade at 5pm and A Grade at 6.30pm. - Glyn Rees

Crash at Cambooya
Emergency services were called to a crash south of Cambooya on Monday morning. A car had rolled into an embankment on a sweeping curve along Cudmore Road. Queensland Fire and Emergency Services sent two vehicles to the scene after the initial call was received at around 8.15am, however only one unit was required to assist. The driver was not trapped in his vehicle. Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics were also sent to the crash site. The driver, a man in his thirties, was treated for minor injuries and back pain. It is believed he was the only occupant of the vehicle. The incident occurred during wet weather. Police have urged motorists to be wary of road conditions during the present variable weather pattern.

Cambooya State School
Mother’s Day came a little early for many mums and grandmas at Cambooya State School. The school hosted a Mother’s Day stall set up by the P&C to allow students to purchase gifts and cards for their Mum’s special day. There was great excitement and plenty of decisions to be made by students as a beautiful selection of gifts was on offer. A greater challenge awaited the students, as shortly after purchasing their gifts, mothers and grandmothers joined them for a Mother’s Day Morning tea. Students found it quite difficult to keep their recent purchases a secret from Mum while they were enjoying morning tea together. The school tuckshop provided a beautiful platter for mums, grandmas and students to share. It was lovely to see so many families enjoying the time together.
