Regional economy booming

Despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Toowoomba Region’s economy is in good shape, with the unemployment rate at a near-record low and key economic indicators showing positive signs. Toowoomba Region Mayor Paul Antonio (pictured) said employment figures were looking promising as the Region’s unemployment rate had fallen to a Queensland low of 3.6 per cent, which was down from 4.3 per cent in May, 4.4 per cent from the April 2021 figure and the lowest since December 2010. “The latest figures are most welcome, but as we near ‘full employment’, there are challenges for employers who are looking for skilled staff across many business and industry sectors,” the Mayor said. “Council is undertaking strategic planning on a Regional Growth Plan that will establish a coordinated and sustainable long-term population and employment growth strategy for the Region, as part of our wider Planning Scheme review under the Toowoomba Region Futures banner. “This will address future workforce needs and plan for servicing new growth areas that will support population increases and new employment opportunities.” The average Queensland unemployment rate for June 2021 was 6.8 per cent. Mayor Antonio said there was continuing good news on the youth unemployment front, with the region’s June 2021 youth unemployment rate dropping to 7.6 per cent, a drop of 17.8 per cent over the year and the largest drop among 19 Queensland statistical divisions. He said ongoing private sector investment would underpin a return to pre-pandemic growth and drive future jobs growth.

“Despite drought and unfavourable conditions, a projected $200 million rebound in our Region’s crop production, compared with 2020 figures, is forecast to see the gross value of crop production total $352 million in 2021,” the Mayor said. “The total gross value of agricultural production is tipped to reach $995 million in 2021, which is 3.2 per cent lower than the previous peak of $1.027 billion in 2018.” Mayor Antonio said the Region’s diverse economy had generated $11.6 billion in Gross Regional Product (GRP) in 2019-20, which equated to 3.1 per cent of the Queensland economy and supports an estimated 82,413 jobs.

Grant a welcome boost for Landcare

Cambooya Landcare Association has received a grant of $3,760 from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund (GCBF) to purchase a new laptop computer. Secretary Glenn Knight said the success of the grant application was good news to hear. “The laptop’s main use will be to replace the outdated laptop used by our Treasurer to manage our grant funds. “We bid successfully for government (Local, State and Federal) funding grants worth tens of thousands of dollars to undertake various landcare projects on behalf of the community. “It is important that our accounts are managed diligently and are fully audited each year,” Mr Knight said. Cambooya Landcare Association is one of 466 recipients that received a share of close to $11 million of GCBF grant funding. Mr Knight said the grant was only a partial success as the Association had also applied to receive funding for updated accounting software. “This will make it much easier to provide reporting information to our accountant/auditor,” he said. Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Shannon Fentiman said the successful a not-for-profit and community groups do fantastic work across Queensland keeping the economy strong by supporting locals. “And now more than ever, it’s so important to spend locally and support small businesses and community groups as they face even tougher restrictions due to the pandemic,” Ms Fentiman said. The GCBF is Queensland’s largest one-off grant funding program that has received more than 62,000 applications since its inception. Currently, the fund provides grants of up to $35,000 for community organisations, not-for-profits and local governments to fund local projects that benefit their communities. Round 111, which is currently open, will close at midnight on 31 August. For more information and to apply, visit justice.qld.gov.au/ initiatives/community-grants/guidelines/about

Concerts a victim of COVID

Fans of country artist Tracy Coster will be disappointed to hear that concerts scheduled for Nobby and Gowrie-Little Plain Hall have been cancelled. Organisers made the call after the COVID-19 situation in New South Wales continued on a worsening trend late last week. Although Tracy remained optimistic, there was considerable doubt that she would have been able to come across the state border. The concerts, part of her Southerly Change Tour had been scheduled to take place at Nobby this Saturday and GowrieLittle Plain Hall this Sunday.

Toowoomba Embroiderers’ Guild exhibition

The Toowoomba Embroiderers’ Guild is hosting its biennial exhibition of embroidery, the “Colourful Threads of Spring” on Friday and Saturday 3rd and 4th September 2021. This will coincide with the first week of the Carnival of Flowers. Many different styles of embroidery will be on display including whitework, blackwork, needle painting, goldwork, sashiko, beadwork, crewel and others. Not only is there a display of fine embroidery but also an Embroidery Shoppe (where items can be purchased), demonstration of stitchery, Second Hand Rose items, raffles and a coffee van. Members will be on hand to talk about the various forms of embroidery and what facilities the guild has to offer members. The exhibition is being held at St David’s Presbyterian Church Hall at 46 Mary Street, Mt Lofty. Doors open at 10am and close at 3pm on both days, 3 and 4 September. All visitors must log in using the QR app or sign in upon entry. - Helen Smith Publicity Officer

Collision at Cambooya

A vehicle collided with a horse late on Monday night on the New England Highway at Cambooya. Paramedics came across the single-vehicle crash into the horse on the New England Highway at 11.03pm, approximately 500m south of the intersection with Drayton Connection Road. A female in her 60s was transported to Toowoomba Hospital in a stable condition with head and shoulder injuries. Two Queensland Fire and Emergency Services crews attended the incident, one fire service rescue and one rural crew, for around 20 minutes from 11.20pm to 11.40pm.

Sprints postponed

The 25th Historic Leyburn Sprints have been postponed by three weeks until 11-12 September due to COVID-19. Sprints President Tricia Chant said that although the State Government had lifted the Brisbane lockdown, the Premier had asked people from those 11 affected Local Government Areas to refrain from visiting regional areas. This meant many competitors and spectators from greater Brisbane would not be able to attend the event on the original date of 21-22 August. “We are very mindful of running not only a successful event, but also a safe one, and we feel that this is the best solution for all involved,” Mrs Chant said. “We are working as fast as we can to advise our competitors, suppliers, sponsors, supporters and others involved in the Sprints.” “With less than two weeks to go to the original date we were already almost fully prepared and expect the re-scheduled event will offer all the same great features and attractions.”
