STATE SCHOOL

VALE VIEW FETE Vale View State School P&C is excited to announce its inaugural fete on the 10th September, 2022. The event will be held at the school from 11am to 3pm. There will be market stalls, face painting, chocolate toss, sno cones, fairy floss, fashion parade, raffles, entertainment, mini golf, bungee run, a giant slide, and lots more. It’s a great time for potential new families to attend, as we will also be having guided tours with our principal Mark Hooson as the tour guide. We are also appreciative of the Emergency Services who will also be present on the day. The Wilsonton Lions Club will be on the barbecue and our fabulous tuckshop convenor is working on a delicious fete day menu. This is the P&C’s major fundraiser for the year. If anyone is interested in having a market stall at the fete, please email scoot7@eq.edu.au for an EOI form. All proceeds from our fete will go towards supporting the children at Vale View State School, whether it be subsidising the bus for the school camp and for swimming lessons, presenting each child with a book at the conclusion of the year,

Help reduce vehicle theft

Police are appealing to the local community to ensure their houses and properties are secure. Across the Darling Downs District, offenders are breaking into houses, stealing vehicle keys and taking off in the vehicles located at the address. Offenders have been known to return to the address at a later date to steal vehicles. Many of these offences have involved unlocked or unsecured doors and windows that the offender has taken advantage of, and this is why police are urging people to make sure their properties are secure. Ensure doors and windows are locked even when you are at home, and keep sought-after items such as vehicle keys, phones and wallets, out of sight. Remove your vehicle keys from the ignition and lock your vehicle, even if parked or unattended for only a few minutes.

Collision claims life

A man lost his life on Friday after his utility collided with a semi trailer filled with cargo at Cambooya. The crash occurred at the junction of the New England Highway and Cambooya Connection Road at around 11.30am, near the United Etonvale service station. Emergency crews attempted to revive the driver and sole occupant of the utility however he passed away at the scene. A helicopter had been tasked to the incident but was not required. Initial investigations indicate the ute, travelling southbound, was about to turn right onto Cambooya Connection Road when it entered the northbound lane. The semi trailer, travelling northbound, collided with the ute at speed. A third vehicle also received minor damage. The driver of the semi trailer was assessed by paramedics on the scene and transported to Toowoomba Base Hospital. For the rest of the day and into the evening vehicles travelling southbound were diverted through Ramsay and vehicles travelling northbound through Cambooya and Wyreema. The Police Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.

Young hockey player Feast of polo coming Tom Campbell is Perth-bound

Mount Rascal resident Tom Campbell is off to Perth this weekend as part of the Queensland Under 21 team to contest the National Under 21 Hockey Tournament.

It’s a great feat for any local player to be included in a State team, but Tom’s selection is even more impressive when you consider that he is just 16 years of age. He is the youngest member of the Queensland team. Toowoomba Hockey’s Matt Cook said Tom, a Year 11 student at Centenary Heights State High School, has had a huge pre-season and made the Queensland Under 18 team earlier this year and was identified in the Australian Futures Under 18 squad. Tom also was named “Player of the Tournament” at the recent Queensland Under 18 hockey tournament held on the Gold Coast over the first weekend of the current school holidays, where the Toowoomba men’s Under 18 team placed second, after losing the grand final 3-4 to the Gold Coast. Matt Cook described Tom as “a very talented young boy”. He said the ten-day event in Perth will test Tom’s ability against some of the best young players in the country. “He’s very fortunate to have the opportunity,” Cook said. Tom’s parents Grant and Nicole Campbell are proud of their son’s effort. “He’ll learn a lot over there,” Nicole said.

Aboriginal art highlighted, celebrated

The University of Southern Queensland’s new art gallery will feature the winners in the inaugural Southern Queensland Landscapes First Nations Art Competition. Overall Grand Prize and 25+ Years Category winner has gone to Melinda Luscombe for her piece ‘Lemon Myrtle Bloom’. “This piece is very personal to me and has been an emotional journey to create,” Ms Luscombe said. “The large circles represent the lineage of the Gomeroi women in our family - my great grandmother, my grandmother and myself.” SQ Landscapes Board Chair, Bruce Scott AM said more than 12 months of planning has gone into the event. “It’s just truly a wonderful thing to see these amazing artists recognized for their talent,” Mr Scott said. Expressions of Interest are now being accepted from Aboriginal artists identifying as one of the 28 First Nations in the Southern Queensland catchment, for the 2022/23 First Nations Art Competition. Green Vehicle Guide driving better choices

The Australian Government has launched the new Green Vehicle Guide website, Australia’s official national guide to vehicle fuel consumption and environmental performance. The redeveloped website makes it easier to quickly compare and understand a vehicle’s fuel efficiency, running costs and environmental performance. The guide has a range of information, data and tools to help guide vehicle buyers’ choices. Using the guide, Australians can calculate and compare total annual fuel costs and carbon dioxide emissions, estimate electric vehicle charging time and costs, find out a vehicle’s life cycle emissions, and discover Australia’s top green vehicles. Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King said green vehicles, including electric and fuel-efficient cars, are overall cheaper to run and maintain. “If you want to save money on fuel and reduce your impact on the environment, I encourage you to use the Green Vehicle Guide when buying your next car – it can help you drive cheaper and greener,” Ms King said. Cambooya State School MAD SCIENTIST DAY The students at Cambooya State School finished Term 2 with a bang. Literally! There was lots of fizzing, oozing, bubbling and slime in any direction you looked as the students celebrated the final day of Semester One with a Mad Scientist Day. Each classroom had at least two different science experiments running as all children went from space to space to complete the hands-on activities.

Thursday, July 14, 2022

At the end of each term, Cambooya State School students celebrate the final day with a themed celebration day. Term 2 saw a Mad Scientists Day. The students chose which experiments in which to participate over a 90-minute period. Many of the students visited a large number of the experiments on offer, while some students chose to spend quite a bit of time repeating their favourite ones. A great time was had by all (and we even learned a few things as well).

ALL PHOTOS: Mad Scientist Day was loads of fun.
