Get ready for Battle of the Bands

Jam sessions have amped up across the Region as home-grown musicians get ready to fight it out in August’s Battle of the Bands as part of Live and Local Toowoomba. Hosted by Council’s Toowoomba Regional Youth Leaders, Battle of the Bands will be a standout opportunity for musicians and bands aged 12 to 25 to showcase their talents, make industry connections and kick-start their musical careers by entering this year’s competition. Entries are now open and there’s more than $7000 in prizes up for grabs with prizes for the top three acts in each category. The Regional Council’s Environment and Community Committee Chair Cr James O’Shea said Battle of the Bands is the perfect opportunity for the Region’s emerging talent to blaze a trail in the local music scene. “Battle of the Bands will promote local youth bands and acoustic artists across our region,” Cr O’Shea said. “We already know there are a number of incredibly talented young artists in our region but we want to create more opportunities for these emerging artists as well as bring them to new and bigger audiences. “The majority of these musicians have been attending the QMusic Connect workshops held throughout June and applying those learnings to their practice, so we are expecting

some first class performances. Cr O’Shea said Battle of the Bands will build on the work done to date as part of the Live and Local Strategic Initiative to foster industry skills and collaboration and encourage more live music events for the community. “There has been a long history of our youth committees hosting live music festivals showcasing our region’s talents and we [sic] excited for the 2021 competition bringing diverse artists from a wide range of musical backgrounds.” For entry details and criteria or for more information on Live and Local Toowoomba, visit council’s website or call 131 782. Battle of the Bands and the Toowoomba Live and Local program are part of the Regional Arts Development Fund partnership with Toowoomba Regional Council, South West Queensland Regional Arts, Q Music, The Live Music Office and APRA AMCOS.

Letters To the Editor

ROUGH ROAD To the Editor, I am extremely concerned, as are the users of this road, that Cr. Carol Taylor states that maintenance and drainage has been completed on Rosenberger Road. Rosenberger Road is on the door-step of Toowoomba, just south of Wyreema. The maintenance gang were working on the road for about a week before they arrived to clear the causeway that had

caused the road to be half closed for one month. Again we have got a band-aid job of grade the dirt off and on the road, water and roll. We asked for pipes for the causeway, but were told we would get some gravel. We got neither. If Cr Carol Taylor thinks this is completed maintenance, ratepayers are saying this has been a complete waste of funds with pot holes and slush returning after two weeks. The engineer was requested to inspect the completed job. This road has 95 vehicles a day on the unsealed eastern section, 20 residences and is approximately 8 kilometres from Wyreema to the Umbiram Road. This band-aiding has gone on for 20 plus years, never improving the road. Another classic example of this is Newman Road, where huge corrugated iron pipes were put in the gully and after some years it has become a massive roadworks. This road is just not built to take the traffic of horse trucks etc. It continues to get worse every time it rains - it took three weeks to complete this unacceptable maintenance. This type of work would not be acceptable in Toowoomba or Highfields and nor is it acceptable here. Buying trucks for $13.6 million gives the impression that the Infrastructure Budget has a surplus, but where is it? When are we going to get our FAIR share of the budget for country roads? Visitors to the area ask, Do you people not pay your rates? This explains how disgusting this road is. The refusal to seal this section of approximately 6 kilometres is unbelievable, considering other roads that have been given preference over this one. Absolutely, nobody in this area is happy and may be Cr. Carol Taylor may like to meet with the irate users of this road in Wyreema? Rate Payer Wyreema (Name Supplied)

New cameras to monitor driving habits

Roadside cameras that can catch drivers using their phones behind the wheel or not wearing a seatbelt will be permanently rolled out on Queensland roads, including regional highways, from 26 July. Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey warned drivers that the locations of the cameras will not be publicly revealed. “Some of the cameras will be mobile, and we won’t be telling people where they are either,” Minister Bailey said. “Drivers should expect to be caught anywhere, anytime, whether they’re driving in the city or on a regional highway.” There will be a three month grace period for drivers, meaning those caught on camera using their phone between 26 July and 31 October this year will be notified and made aware they had been caught, but not fined. From 1 November, any driver caught by the cameras can expect to receive a $1033 fine and lose four demerit points. The cameras will also be able to detect drivers and their front seat passengers not wearing their seatbelts. The current penalty for not wearing a seatbelt is $413 and three demerit points. Mr Bailey said distracted driving was a silent killer on the state’s roads, likening it to drink driving. “Our message has always been direct and very simple: just put your phone away. “Using a mobile phone while driving has the same impact as getting behind the wheel with a blood alcohol reading between 0.07 and 0.10. “We successfully trialled these cameras last year, and have been talking about them coming to Queensland roads for two years,” Mr Bailey said. Last year, 43 people who died in crashes in Queensland weren’t wearing a seatbelt, 14 more than in 2019 and 15 more than the previous five-year average. Mr Bailey said the penalties were necessary to stamp out driver distraction. “So far in 2021, 136 people have died on Queensland roads – 12 more than at the same time last year,” he said. “The numbers are shocking, particularly when you consider that for every life lost, another 27 people are treated in hospital,” he said. Driver distraction contributes to almost 20 per cent of serious injuries and 12 per cent of all lives lost on Queensland roads. RACQ spokesperson Renee Smith said RACQ welcomed the introduction of mobile phone and seatbelt detection cameras across Queensland to improve road safety. “We know on average around 29 people are killed and more than a thousand others are seriously injured every year on Queensland roads as a result of crashes where driver distraction played a part,” Ms Smith said. “More detailed rules around mobile phone use by drivers, along with greater enforcement of the road rules through these

first-of-a-kind cameras, will help to reduce driver distraction and improve road safety in Queensland. “Sadly, we’re still seeing drivers refusing to wear a seatbelt. Seatbelts save lives – it’s as simple as that.” Ms Smith also warned new regulations were being proposed around the use of a mobile phone while driving in Queensland. “If these rules are passed later this month, it will be illegal for motorists to have a mobile phone on any part of their body while driving including on your lap or wedged between your body and the seatbelt – regardless of whether the phone is in use or not,” she said. “There’ll be some exceptions, for example, if you’re using your phone to pay for goods and services at a drive through while the vehicle is stationary, if you’re using your phone under police direction such as showing a border pass or if the phone is in your pocket.” Two-thirds of Queenslanders admit to using their mobile phones illegally while driving.

National Servicemen’s Association Toowoomba Branch

We are asking those Nashos born in 1941 to contact the secretary as the OBE luncheon will be held on Sunday 8th August at the Irish Club hotel, Russell St. This is a great opportunity to catch up with Nasho mates and reminisce about the years spent at Wacol and other training places. If you know of a Nasho in that age bracket please let them know about this day. Of course, all Nashos no matter their age, are most welcome to attend this lunch and make it a special day for the Over Bloomin’ Eighties. Recently the Toowoomba branch of the National Servicemen’s Association hosted a luncheon honouring the widows of National Servicemen. About 50 Nashos, wives, widows and supporters enjoy a delightful lunch at the Irish Club Hotel as well as lucky draws in the raffle. Due to the uncertainty regarding COVID we had badge stalls at only one venue for Anzac day this year. Our thanks goes to all who willingly assisted and to those who purchased items from our stall. We hope to have stalls for Remembrance day in November.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. We have a Social ‘get together’ lunch at the City Golf Club, South Street 3rd Friday of every month. The next lunch is 16th July, a table is booked so just come along and enjoy a chat with your fellow Nashos. Meetings are held monthly at the Irish Club Hotel. For information regarding these activities phone Joan on 4633 2564. A few of our members have spent some time in hospital recently. We wish all a speedy return to good health. A few dates to put in your diary: •Sunday 8th August OBE at Irish Club Hotel noon •3rd Friday of every month Social get together lunch at the City Golf Club •State Conference Wacol 11th September •Christmas Party Saturday 4th December 12 noon at the Irish Club Hotel, Russell St We look forward to seeing many Nashos at some or all of these functions. Joan Sullivan Assistant Secretary, NSAA (Qld) Inc. Toowoomba Branch

Matt Duggan Stars in Wattles Eleven Try Blitz

Wattles borrowed a leaf out of the NRL one-sided results book on Sunday handing out an eleven try to one walloping of the Dalby Diehards to win 70-4 in front of a much-deflated Dalby home crowd. Half-back Matt Duggan was in superb form as Wattles’ playHis performance included a try and eleven goals from making general around the park, rewarded with being named twelve attempts for a 26-point personal tally against the Player of the Round. dismal Diehards. The result saw Wattles move to second place on the A Grade competition ladder with 18 premiership points, ahead of Highfields on for and against. The points floodgates opened when green and gold hooker Kai Williamson-Duggan touched down after just eight minutes, followed five minutes later by Matt Duggan for the Warriors to ease ahead 12–0. Dalby showed some spark to reply with a four-pointer by AFFORDABLE PRECISION AERIAL APPLICATION winger Ryan Welsh, for what would be his side’s only points of the game. The Warriors methodically added another 58 points at regular intervals in a more than convincing victory. In what was Wattles’ sixth successive win coach Travis Burns felt it was his side’s best performance of the season. The Warriors’ forward pack proved relentless against the Diehards, who are always a tough hurdle on their home track. dc@dronecommander.com.au Call us for a quote Wattles’ big four of Dale Perkins, Brendan McBryde, www.dronecommander.com.au Michael Pearson and Mitch Duff certainly earned their spurs 0400 283 319 Facebook.com/dronecommander rolling over the home side, McBryde fast building a reputation as one of the competition’s best forwards. Wattles’ overall fitness is particularly evident as the season rolls on, and they are showing the results of their improved speed around the ruck that reaped dividends against Dalby. The match was a far cry from when the two teams met back in Round 1, when a stubborn Diehards outfit clawed their way back from a 14–0 deficit to win 32–14 and reclaim the Rod Frahm Memorial Trophy at Platz Oval. Pre-match press suggestions ranked Dalby as Wattles’ bogie side, a comment that lost all credibility on Sunday. Wattles need to step up this Sunday in what is always a challenging contest at Gatton’s Cahill Park against the Hawks who are perched in sixth place on the ladder. Wattles out-gunned Gatton when they met back in Round 2 in a one-sided 52–12 result at Platz Oval. Wattles 70 (Jackson Green 2, Steve Eliott 2, Matt Christensen, Braydon Wilson, Matt Duggan, Kai Williamson-Duggan, Michael Pearson, Joe Mua, Brendan McBride tries; Matt Duggan 11 goals) defeated Dalby 4 (Ryan Welsh try). RESERVE GRADE Wattles 26 (Brenden Wilson, Joe Morris, Tom Morris, Jordan Henry tries; Tom Morris 5 goals) defeated Dalby 6 UNDER 18 Dalby 72 defeated Wattles 10 (Jacob Meddleton, Lucas Torrisi tries; Jacob Meddleton goal). THIS WEEKEND Program for this Sunday 18th July: Wattles vs. Gatton, Cahill Park, Gatton - 11.30am, Under 18; 1pm, Reserve Grade; 2.30pm A Grade - Glyn Rees
