Emu Creek P&C readies students for 2023
Throughout the year, the P&C has held many successful fundraisers including the school’s Colour Fun Run.
The funds raised have been used to pay for school excursions, reduce the cost of school camp, purchase a book from Book Fair for every student and provide all the books and stationery resources for every child for next school year.
Each year, the P&C donation to purchase the books and stationery for every child is very much appreciated by all families of the students as it reduces the financial pressure and ‘back to school shop’ on families over the Christmas holidays.

After
The popular local parish priest is no stranger to change with a lifetime serving the Catholic Church not just in Australia but also overseas.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/221214012226-0aab2270fd15a946a9fd3bef3b468fbb/v1/6b843b024c93307f441bf606e685a496.jpeg)
During his time on the Downs Fr Rod has been based at Clifton and has covered parish work at St James’ and St John’s Church in Clifton as well as the Allora, Leyburn, Greenmount and Cambooya areas.
Fr Rod grew up in the local area, having been born in his parents’ home on their dairy farm at West Haldon, where he was the youngest of eight children.
He was ordained to the priesthood on 9th August 1972 and his first appointment was to St Anthony’s Parish in Toowoomba after which he served in Cairns, Oakey, Pittsworth and Cunnamulla.
He left Australia for two stints in Chile where for a time he worked as a prison chaplain to 1200 high security prisoners before returning to Australia in 1992.
In 1993 he was appointed to the Pittsworth Parish before another stint of 18 months in Chile.

In 2010 he returned to his childhood district with his appointment as parish priest at Clifton and priest director to the parishes of Allora and Cambooya.
As he prepares to leave the Clifton district, he reflects on the fact that returning here has made his life much more
meaningful and pays tribute to the “lovely, kind, generous people “ in the area.

At 75, Fr Rod has no plans to retire.
He accepts that he is coming to an age where “ I change one tyre and the other one goes flat,” and prays that he will have the courage to accept the coming years gracefully.

When his time to part this life does come, he wants to be laid to rest in the Greenmount Cemetery where many of his family members have been laid to rest.
There is no doubt Fr Rod will be missed by the people of Cambooya and Greenmount and wherever Fr Rod has served on the Darling Downs.

Toowoomba in Top 10 of RACQ home break-in claims
Figures released by RACQ Insurance show that the urban areas in and around Toowoomba figure in the top ten areas of the state when it comes to insurance claims following home break-ins.
Toowoomba ranks number 7 on a list of 19 problem areas.
Inner-city Brisbane is the worst area.
RACQ and the Queensland Police Service are urging residents to safeguard their homes against theft this festive season with more than $13 million worth of property stolen from homes in the past three years.
RACQ Group Executive Insurance Trent Sayers said the insurer had received more than 3,400 reported claims for theft from homes in Queensland since November 2019, despite the pandemic forcing more people to spend more time at home.
“Our research shows three quarters of Queenslanders are concerned about being broken into while away on holidays, with most (67%) taking extra home security measures.”
No upgrade for dangerous junction
Despite its danger, there are no plans to fix the site of many road vehicle crashes, the junction of the Gore Highway (Toowoomba - Athol Road) and Old Wyreema Road.
Safety concerns surround the junction of the Old Wyreema Road and the former Gore Highway.
Member for Condamine Pat Weir recently received a response in Parliament from the Minister for Transport and Main Roads (TMR) Mike Bailey.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/221214012226-0aab2270fd15a946a9fd3bef3b468fbb/v1/ee784b902ce5fda59b1d7590e7f7d1e4.jpeg)

Mr Weir had asked if there will be any future funding allocated to improve the safety of this intersection, given its location on an incline and a bend, making a right hand turn dangerous with the large volume of traffic on the highway.
Mr Bailey said the Gore Highway (now Toowoomba–Athol Road) and Old Wyreema Road intersection was assessed for safety upgrades as part of a 2021 planning project.

“TMR’s planning did not recommend treatments to this intersection,” Mr Bailey said.
“TMR will continue to monitor the operation and safety of the Gore Highway and Old Wyreema Road intersection, however, has no plans to upgrade the intersection at this time.”
The most recent serious crash at the intersection occurred in July this year, which saw four people transported to Toowoomba Hospital following a twovehicle crash, including two in a serious condition.

Thoroughbred breeding season draws to a close on the Darling Downs
The Darling Downs is arguably the centre of the Queensland thoroughbred
small horse studs scattered around the region from Cambooya to
is ideal for growing good horse pasture.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/221214012226-0aab2270fd15a946a9fd3bef3b468fbb/v1/aa48cce497d6c7aabcb7818a91c36cea.jpeg)

![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/221214012226-0aab2270fd15a946a9fd3bef3b468fbb/v1/38f95a8d349611dcad3696a61c77d9cc.jpeg)
The breeding season starts in August and continues through till December with the first foals born in August and mares begin to be served by stallions in September.
Unlike other horse breeds, where artificial insemination of mares is common practice, thoroughbred mares must be physically served by a stallion if the foal is to be prepared for a racing career.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/221214012226-0aab2270fd15a946a9fd3bef3b468fbb/v1/aeabb0721af978a42bead839396b7570.jpeg)
This requirement means that many of the thoroughbred horse studs on the Downs stand stallions who will serve dozens of Queensland mares and mares from interstate.
The Darling Downs boasts many of the best stallions not just in Queensland, but Australia, with Cambooya’s Eureka Stud standing one of Australia’s premier stallions in Spirit of Boom.
The breeding of thoroughbred horses on the Darling Downs goes back over a hundred years with several of today’s major studs being family owned businesses going back four generations.
Raheen Stud at Gladfield is a four generation family business which transitioned from dairy production to horses well over fifty years ago.
The Nolan family is well known and much respected across the thoroughbred industry with Basil Nolan Senior holding the position of President of the Queensland Owners and Breeders Association for twelve years.
Basil said the thoroughbred industry on the Downs employs over 2000 people directly on horse studs with possibly another 2000 people, such as farriers, veterinarians, hay producers, and equine food and equipment suppliers being indirectly employed.
The Nolan’s Raheen Stud had a busy breeding season with close to one hundred foals born during the six month season and their stallion Heroic Valour serving over eighty mares.
Basil felt the current breeding season was a difficult one, as prolonged rainfall made it difficult to get mares into foal.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/221214012226-0aab2270fd15a946a9fd3bef3b468fbb/v1/024fd3205ce75d24ef3bf46add9124c4.jpeg)
This belief was echoed by Scott McAlpine of Eureka Stud who also believed environmental factors had affected many mare’s ability to get into foal or late foaling down.
As the breeding season finishes studs begin preparing their yearlings for sales such as the Magic Millions auction on the Gold Coast.
Scott McAlpine said top trainers from down south such as Gai Waterhouse had already visited his stud to inspect the new crop of yearlings bound for the auctions.
Naturally it is the hope of all breeders that their yearlings will attract plenty of attention that translates into top prices.
Greenmount’s Clear Mountain Fairview Stud is another of the top Queensland Studs where the Frappell family has just completed one of its busiest breeding seasons.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/221214012226-0aab2270fd15a946a9fd3bef3b468fbb/v1/6c01ed9795bb8d3797043e07c0a8f2ad.jpeg)
Bob Frappell and son Mick stand three of Queensland’s top stallions and are especially excited by the success of their stallion, Worthy Cause, who has already sired a Group One winner despite being only a young stallion.
Wives Maree and Lisa Frappell are also heavily involved in the stud’s operation as are the young Frappell children making the stud another three generation family business.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/221214012226-0aab2270fd15a946a9fd3bef3b468fbb/v1/d05a7acc3f4a91412c20fd6f712ce2ba.jpeg)
There are numerous small studs scattered across the Downs such as Ashmore Downs at East Greenmount where cattle grazier Spencer Morgan of Condamine has purchased exciting young stallion, Sensei.
Stud master Ashley Milne has been busy with Sensei serving 60 mares this season
There is no such thing as a quiet time on a horse stud but with the end of the breeding season there at least comes an end to mares foaling at 2am, and those on foal watch can return to normal sleep patterns, at least until next breeding season.
Cr Geoff and wife Lisa McDonald would like to send a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all. Keep safe over the festive season.Toowoomba

Labour use has decreased on Australian horticulture and dairy farms and increased on broadacre farms over the last few years, according to the latest ABARES survey results.
ABARES Executive Director, Dr Jared Greenville said despite the decline in labour use, agricultural production has increased over the same period, indicating that farms have adapted to constrained labour supply.
“The total number of workers used by Australian

horticulture farms decreased by around 20 per cent (29,300 workers) over the last three years, mainly due to a decrease in overseas working holiday makers,” Dr Greenville said.
“When we look at changes to peak labour use, we have seen a reduction of close to 35,000 workers on horticulture farms compared to three years ago.
“Over the same period, horticulture production has increased by around three per cent, with farms adapting to constrained labour supply by finding ways to improve productivity, making greater use of capital equipment in the place of labour, along with increasing hours worked by employees.”
Dr Greenville said farmers have looked to non-labour means of bringing the harvest in.

“Around 40 per cent of horticulture farmers have used machinery, like fruit picking machines, to help with the harvest. Others have altered crop plantings for a longer peak harvest,” he said.

“Large farms accounted for the almost all of the decrease in horticulture labour use over the last three years, and the largest farms also had the most difficulty recruiting.
“Labour use increased on Australian broadacre farms between 2018–19 and 2020–21, driven by improved seasonal conditions and higher production.
“Labour use declined on dairy farms over the same period, mainly due to decreases in the number of operating farms and the number of domestic and overseas workers per farm.”

Renewed push for vaccination as COVID-19 cases rise
Queensland’s Chief Health Officer, Dr John Gerrard is renewing his push for people to get up to date with their vaccinations due to ongoing and widespread transmission of COVID-19 in the community.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/221214012226-0aab2270fd15a946a9fd3bef3b468fbb/v1/3acbfdb9ae0e9823870b57fc67e116b6.jpeg)
Dr Gerrard said the number of positive cases had risen in the preceding week and were expected to keep trending upward until the fourth wave peaked.
“Reported positive cases between 30 November and 7 December reached 13,632, which is an increase of 21 per cent compared to the week prior, while the number of hospitalisations remained the same,” Dr Gerrard said.
“It is encouraging to see the number of hospitalisations remain low in comparison to previous waves, but a large number of people aged over 60 not up-to-date with their vaccinations are being infected.
“People in this group are at significant risk of severe illness if they contract COVID-19, so it is vital they receive four doses of the vaccine.

Dr Gerrard said Queensland Health continued to track infections to inform its response to COVID-19 and assist in determining what impact future waves may have on the community.
“More than 80 per cent of people reporting positive results in this wave are still first infections,” he said.

“As time goes on, it is natural that people who have not yet had COVID-19 will become infected.

Dr Gerrard said antiviral treatments were also an effective response to COVID-19, particularly for people over the age of 70.
“Queenslanders over the age of 70 should have a plan to obtain antiviral treatments if they do get infected,” he said.
“There has been an increase in the use of antiviral treatments during this fourth wave, and I am hopeful this will continue.”
Dr Gerrard said the rate of COVID-19 infections meant Queensland’s COVID-19 traffic light system would remain on amber, which meant people were advised to wear a mask in healthcare settings, indoors if they could not socially distance, and on public transport.
In the Toowoomba Region, 123 cases had been reported on Friday of last week, when Dr Gerrard made his call for more people to complete their vaccination course.
Across the Region, 95 per cent of those eligible for a first vaccination had acquired one.

A second vaccination had been acquired by 94.2 per cent.
However when it comes to booster shots, the figures a less impressive.
Just 67.4 per cent have had their third shot, whilst only 49.4 p[er cent have taken things seriously enough to have a fourth vaccination.

END OF YEAR CELEBRATIONS
Week 9 at Cambooya State School was a colourful experience for both students and adults.
The P&C at Cambooya ran a colour run to celebrate the end of the year for the students.
It was an explosion of colour on the oval as students, teachers and parents made their way around the obstacle course and became covered in vibrant colours mixed with water, bubbles and suds.

Despite the cool conditions, everyone had a great afternoon and enjoyed becoming bright, colourful and wet.
Thanks to all the parent helpers who set up the obstacle course and then spent the afternoon spraying colour and water on the participants.

5 Tips To Drink Less this Festive Season
Christmas is just around the corner and our diaries are quickly filling up with social events.
It’s easy to let our alcohol consumption increase by up to double at this time of year, which impacts our energy, liver, mood and anxiety.
Grey Area Drinking Coach Sarah Rusbatch says we can still enjoy the fun but without all the side effects.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/221214012226-0aab2270fd15a946a9fd3bef3b468fbb/v1/9cc578f3d0f3352dc18d81eb44482b89.jpeg)
Here’s how...
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/221214012226-0aab2270fd15a946a9fd3bef3b468fbb/v1/43eb9c548e72eed69bb561c38821a461.jpeg)
1) Don’t plan every Christmas catch up around alcoholinclude walks, breakfasts, picnics and outdoor activities that create connection but without the pressure to drink.
2) Get familiar with alcohol-free drinks and take them along to social events. It stops people questioning what you’re drinking and most people don’t even notice it’s alcohol-free.
3) Make sure you have a few alcohol-free days each week.
4) Say No! Get comfortable with saying No to invites that don’t excite you - that means you will enjoy the ones you do attend even more.
5) Focus on the positives of not feeling hungover every day - a morning run, being patient and present with your children and enjoying all the other positives this festive season - time with loved ones, time off work and a real opportunity to rest and recharge.

Increase in dog attacks on Posties
Australia Post is urging dog owners to safely secure their pets after a sharp rise in dog attacks on its workers.
Nearly 1,000 Australia Post workers have been attacked by household dogs over the past five months, sparking the urgent plea.
The number of dogrelated incidents recorded by Australia Post has increased more than 55 per cent, with an average of almost seven incidents reported each day since July 2022, compared to an average of just over four per day in the 2021/22 financial year.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/221214012226-0aab2270fd15a946a9fd3bef3b468fbb/v1/3e47ec3a48bdf00a0a7595c1ba5c17eb.jpeg)
In the last five months alone, 986 incidents have been reported, compared to 1587 for the full 2021/22 financial year.
Some of these attacks can lead to severe and debilitating injuries with many requiring medical treatment.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/221214012226-0aab2270fd15a946a9fd3bef3b468fbb/v1/90c582b389171dee43739b138e484ffe.jpeg)
NSW recorded the highest number of dogrelated incidents with 351 since 1 July, followed by QLD with 281.
Australia Post Executive General Manager People and Culture Susan Davies said the data shows an alarming upwards trend in the number of dog-related incidents as well as an increase in the severity of injuries sustained.
“As we head into the busiest delivery time of the year, we want to ensure that our Posties are protected,” she said.

As last week drew to a close, Police made a call to the state’s motorists to make safe decisions on Queensland roads as Queensland Police Service’s (QPS) annual road safety enforcement operation commenced at midnight on Friday last, December 9.
Acting Chief Superintendent Chris Stream said the statewide operation would involve a significant number of highly visible and covert police across the state.
“We want each person who travels on our roads over the Christmas and New Year period to arrive to their loved ones safely,” Acting Chief Superintendent Stream said.
“This year we have lost 279 lives on our roads.
“These are 279 families with an empty seat at Christmas lunch this year.
“Our message to road users is clear – your presence is by far the best gift you can give your family this Christmas.”
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/221214012226-0aab2270fd15a946a9fd3bef3b468fbb/v1/6790e3b9378079b63a826dc3415a080b.jpeg)
Operation Charger will run through to midnight, January 27.
The operation will focus on drink and drug driving, speeding and restraints.
“If you decide to drink over the Christmas period, never drive – it’s that simple,” Acting Chief Superintendent Stream said.
“During last year’s enforcement operation, more than 174,000 breath tests were conducted with more than 2,000 drunk drivers detected on Queensland roads.
“This year, we’re expecting to conduct more breath tests and we have a simple ask for road users – don’t drive if you’ve been drinking.
“If you make the decision to get behind the wheel after drinking, you can expect to see us.”

Acting Chief Superintendent Stream praised the thousands of drivers who drive responsibly every day.
“We are committed to reducing dangerous behaviours on our roads whether it be through our enforcement operations, education programs or speed camera sites.
“The mindset you get in the car with often determines the decisions you make on your journey.
“While we will be out there, doing our part to keep our roads safe, the decision to drive safely ultimately starts with you.”
Between January 1 and last Friday, 280 lives had been lost on our roads, 11 more than the same period last year.

Go Christmas shopping at Oakey
When planning a Christmas shopping trip, people from this area probably reckon a trip into town (Toowoomba) is the go, but for those who prefer to avoid the inevitable city traffic and crowds at this time of the year, Oakey is worth thinking about.
On page 7 of this week’s On Our Selection News readers would note a selection of Christmas gift ideas from the big range that has been brought into Bi Rite Electrical Oakey.
The long-standing business has been part of the Langton family for many years and is currently operated by Andrew and Nicole Langton and their team of very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable staff.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/221214012226-0aab2270fd15a946a9fd3bef3b468fbb/v1/45aa953251c2b1321812576f694303da.jpeg)
Apart from the Bi Rite franchise, the store includes a big collection of Jaycar products.
This week’s advertisement promoting the store is no accident - the Langtons are keen to attract customers from this part of the world so that they can demonstrate the benefits of shopping with a family owned store in a less hurried country town.
Andrew Langton has long been an advocate for Oakey businesses and has a strong link to many community organisations including the local Chamber of Commerce, where his terms as president have always proved to be successful.
At On Our Selection News we congratulate the Langtons on their initiative in advertising with us to promote the town of Oakey.

Woodford Folk Festival takes it up a notch
The large number of Darling Downs locals who help make up the throng at Woodfordia
Festival will notice a touch of luxury has been added for a lucky few this year.
Twenty luxury glamping tents with ensuite bathrooms and kitchens have been launched with the help of $1.2 million from the Queensland Government Growing Tourism Infrastructure fund.
Woodfordia Inc. General Manager Amanda Jackes said the beautifully furnished glamping tents were located in the shady camping grounds of Woodfordia around Lake Gkula and close to the General Store.
“The glamping tents will be booked for events ranging from the iconic Woodford Folk Festival to the two-week Lake Gkula Camping period in Easter 2023,” Ms Jackes said.

“Ultimately, these gorgeous glamping tents will be available for bookings year-round during either festivals and events, or for private functions or shortterm holiday stays.
“This project would not have been possible without the support of the Queensland Government and its vital funding of new tourism infrastructure.
“Accommodation has always been an issue at Woodfordia with the most recent festival selling out all our 120 premium luxury bell tents along with the 250 tent city tent motels.
“These luxury glamping units will bring a new level of indulgent offering for our patrons.”
