Top Camp man gets top honour

Long-time Lions Club member in Toowoomba Noel Saal has received an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for his service to the community of South East Queensland.

Mr Saal, who is now aged 91, is a resident of Top Camp these days. He said he was surprised when he found out about the honour. “It is something entirely out of the blue,” he said. “I wouldn’t have imagined it in my wildest dreams.” Across more than 50 years in the Lions organisation, Mr Saal held a variety of positions at both club and district level. He began as a charter member of the Clifton Lions Club in 1967 before becoming its president in 1968-69. Mr Saal moved to Toowoomba West Lions Club in 1972, where he was Secretary in 1976-1978, 1984-1985, 1993-1994, 1995-1996, 2001-2002, 2003-2004 and 2007-2010, President in 1983-1984 and 2006-2007 and Membership Chairman in 20092017. In Lions District 201Q1, he held the roles of Zone Chairman, Deputy District Governor, District Secretary, Re-Districting Chairman, Lioness Chairman, Leo Clubs Chairman and Deputy District Governor. In Lions District 201Q3, he held the roles of District Governor, Deputy District Governor, District Secretary and Administration Officer. In addition to being club President of Clifton, Mr Saal was a charter member in 1967 and the inaugural Vice-President from 1967 to 1968, as well as the Membership Chairman from 1969 to 1970 and Secretary from 1971 to 1972. Continued funding greatly appreciated by local groups

The decision by Toowoomba Region Councillors to continue to cover insurance costs for local community groups, including halls, has been warmly received by those groups who have benefited from it.

Local groups include the Cambooya Public Hall Association, Wyreema Public Hall Committee, Hodgson Vale Community Sports Club, Felton Hall Association, Greenmount Returned Soldiers Memorial Hall Association, Nobby Heritage and Development Association and Westbrook Hall Committee. Halls and historical societies were the main recipients. Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) $1,745.24 has allocated to every community group involved in the funding for 2021/22 and 2022/23, up from $1,645.24. The funding covers two types of organisations: historical societies and halls, which can either be owned by TRC or not. Clare Coughlan, Secretary of the Cambooya Public Hall Association, said the funding by TRC allows for money that the hall raises itself to be spent elsewhere. “Without it we may not be able to keep up with upgrades as required, Mrs Coughlan said. “We have to do all our own fundraising to keep the hall maintained.” Mrs Coughlan said she was happy with TRC’s continued investment in her organisation. “On behalf of the committee, we’d like to thank Toowoomba Regional Council,” she said. Halls get $100 boost to cover insurance

Continued from page 2 Ted Cavanagh, Secretary of Hodgsonvale Community Sports Club, said the insurance funding benefitted the general community and members alike. “They do not have to pay extra when hiring the facility which keeps the costs down for all those who use the facility, he said. “Getting this rebate each year means we don’t have to go out and run extra events to help pay for it, which is always difficult with a purely voluntary organisation like ours.” Sarah Howell, who is Secretary of Wyreema Public Hall Committee, said it was “quite nice” that the funding had been increased by $100. “Especially with COVID, we don’t hire the hall out as much as usual so it’s been really good. “Without funding we wouldn’t be able to protect our volunteers,” Mrs Howell said. The funding covers public liability, volunteer and professional cover insurance. Organisations need to have all three types of insurance in order to be eligible to receive funding. Mrs Howell said the $100 boost will be beneficial as she

suspects insurance costs will increase this year. The insurance funding is part of the 2021/22 to 2022/23 Core Community Support Program. The Program is separate to TRC’s Community Grants Policy. Core Community Support includes providing less than the commercial rate for internal council payments, for consistent payments and for insurance support. The motion to approve the funding, by Cr Carol Taylor and seconded by Cr Bill Cahill, was carried unanimously.

Multiple charges for Greenmount man

Last Wednesday, a Greenmount male in his 30s was intercepted by police whilst he was driving his motor vehicle on Felton Clifton Road in Nobby and now faces multiple traffic-related charges. When the man was intercepted, he was found to be driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle that was being driven with false plates. The vehicle itself was also subject to an immobolisation order, meaning that it was not legally allowed to be driven by anyone. The matter will be dealt with at the Warwick Magistrates Court on 9 August 2021. The Felton Clifton Road runs to the south and west of Nobby.

Queensland Day funding available

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has invited applications for funding of up to $15,000 for events and initiatives dedicated to celebrating Queensland’s birthday on 6 June, 2022.

Ms Palaszczuk said Queensland Day is a great occasion and community groups make the most of it by bringing Queenslanders together in celebration. “So for non-profit organisations, residents’ groups, Parents and Citizens’ Associations, Local Government Authorities or any other community group, now is the time to start thinking about 2022 Queensland Day events and applying for funding.” Applications for up to $15,000 for Queensland Day events held 4-12 June 2022 can be made through the 2022 Queensland Day Sponsorship Program. “Events or initiatives may include hosting a family fun day, a community festival, markets or an art display, to showcase our great state and support Queenslanders to gather safely to mark the day in 1859 that Queensland became separate,” Ms Palaszczuk said. “I look forward to seeing plans develop for next year’s Queensland Day, and our people, places, produce and culture celebrated in honour of 6 June 2022.” For more information on the Queensland Day Sponsorship Program, download the 2022 Queensland Day Sponsorship Program guidelines at qld.gov.au/queenslandday or phone 07 3003 9200. GAB bore water funds now available

Funds to cap and pipe bores can now be applied for by landholders in the Great Artesian Basin. Queensland Minister for Water Glenn Butcher said landholders can apply to cover up to 90 per cent of costs for projects that contribute to water savings in Queensland’s Great Artesian Basin. “Right now, we are losing around 80,000 megalitres of water each year from free flowing bores, most with open bore drains”, Mr Butcher said. “Over the past 30 years, this water-saving program has returned an estimated 213,000 megalitres of water back into the basin every year by capping more than 717 bores to control water flow and replacing 14,600 kilometres of open bore drain with pipes.” This latest funding will go towards on-property projects that involve managing water flow by rehabilitating or replacing bores, and replacing open bore drains with pipes, tanks and troughs. Landholders can apply for funding of up-to 90 per cent of the total project cost. Under round 1, landholders have until 16 July 2021 to apply for project funds with a second round opening from 16 August to 19 November 2021. The funding – provided by the Commonwealth and Queensland Governments and private investors – is part of The Great Artesian Basin Rehabilitation Program (GABRP) that supports water saving projects in Queensland’s section of the Great Artesian Basin. GABRP aligns with the Commonwealth’s Improving Great Artesian Basin Drought Resilience program. Landholders can access further information online by visiting https://www.business.qld.gov.au/industries/miningenergy-water/water or by emailing GABPMO@rdmw.qld.gov.au

Green fingers as well at Greenmount

Greenmount State School received a grant through the 2021 Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants to help improve its gardens by providing the capability to repurpose waste into compost. Emu Creek State School had also received a grant through the program to construct a working food garden and for a bee bonus. The submission by Greenmount State School to apply for the grant said the project would help students “learn different processes of recycling waste and turning it into a useful resource... help eliminate waste that ends up in the local landfill waste facility,” and make “a natural and organic

product to enhance healthy growth of their produce.” Across Australia, 1,609 primary schools and early learning centres received grants, joining the 2,724 schools that were successful in the first two rounds of grants. The grant was provided through a partnership between Landcare Australia and Woolworths.

Member for Maranoa David Littleproud confirmed that Federal Ministers are not exempt from impact when it comes to the mouse plague. Discussing the current situation in New South Wales during an interview with Chris Smith on Sky News, Mr Littleproud revealed that he has had experience with the little blighters at his own home on the Darling Downs. “I’ve had them through my own bed and chewed through my own jammies, so I know what these people are going through. “We’ve just got to continue to be vigilant, to bait, and we’ve got people from the CSIRO on the ground, talking to farmers, also helping them, making sure that when they are baiting, they’re doing it effectively to get the results we need,” Mr Littleproud said.

We offer the full range of motorcycle, ATV and SSV plus Yamaha Waverunner. We have the best team of highly trained technicians, to service and repair all makes of motorcycles and farm bikes. We can assist with pickup and delivery also! We stock a huge range of parts and accessories, backed up by experienced staff that know the products. OAM for local Lions Club member

Continued from page 1 Since his retirement, in addition to his Lions’ work Noel Saal has taken great interest in researching his family history and has written six books about it. Honours are not unusual for Mr Saal, as after his more than 50 years of work he has received many signs of recognition. He has received some of the highest honours that Lions members can receive, including the Melvin Jones Fellowship, which recognises humanitarian work, life membership to Lions International and was 2009-2010 Lion of the Year. He has attended 53 Lions conventions held locally,

Living with Multiple Sclerosis

On Thursday 1 July, Toowoomba’s MS Group is having a Chill & Chat at Gardens Galore in Warwick. This is an opportunity for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) sufferers, their families and anyone interested to attend the luncheon to ask questions and learn about the support and services offered by the MS Society. One person who has gained a lot out of Toowoomba’s MS Group is Glen Miller. Mr. Miller is a quietly spoken gentlemen who has had an interesting and full life, being a carpenter and joiner, including building his own beautiful home with a full verandah in 1995. In 1997, he was diagnosed with MS, his first symptoms appearing ten years earlier. Before moving to Deuchar, just outside Allora, Mr Miller and his wife packed up the four kids and headed north out of Penrith, in Sydney’s west, after selling his joinery business. They found their dream property where they have now lived for 25 years, creating a garden filled with lots of trees and flowers. After being diagnosed with MS, Mr Miller used his knowledge and skills to teach his trade for seven years at the Killarney School. There was a combined MS Group comprised of Warwick, Allora and Clifton but it folded, so now Mr Miller attends the Toowoomba MS group that meets once a month at the MS Hall in the University of Southern Queensland Grounds. For more information, contact Sue Berghofer on 4564 7813.

nationally and internationally. Bob Free, a member of the Clifton Lions Club for over fifty years and resident of Felton, contributed to the process of writing the submission that led to Mr Saal being recognised. Mr Free said a letter was received by the Clifton Lions Club which was then passed on to himself due to his longevity in the organisation. “I had a fair idea of everything he had done with Lions,” Mr Free said. “I joined when Noel was president and I watched what he did. “He is a very dedicated man to his service.” Mr Free said he was thrilled that his friend had been rewarded with such a prestigious award. “It is a great honour,” Mr Free said. The Order of Australia recognises Australians who have demonstrated outstanding service or exceptional achievement, with OAM awarded for service worthy of particular recognition. Mr Saal was one of over 1000 people to receive an award across Australia. The Governor-General, David Hurley said each reward recipient is unique and their story deserves to be shared widely and celebrated. “Collectively, they speak to who we are as a nation. “There are countless examples of selflessness, commitment and dedication. “There is diversity and there are examples of exceptional achievement in almost every field imaginable,” His Excellency said.

WYREEMA STATE SCHOOL

LITTLE COOKS At Wyreema State School, students who participated in the extension program ‘Lightbulb Hour’ put their cooking skills to the test last Friday. Over the past couple of weeks, students researched a range of recipes, selected a recipe to cook and budgeted using an online grocery website to calculate the total cost to cook their recipe. The recipes ranged from pizzas to pies, milo balls and apple crumble. Students enjoyed cooking and sharing their creations with each other for lunch.
