Detectives have charged 24-years-old Lachlan Mark Freund of Cambooya in relation to the alleged murder of 25-years-old Thor Morgan in March. At approximately 2.50am on March 15, Mr Morgan was driving a vehicle on Ruthven Street in Harlaxton when a firearm was discharged from a stolen Dual Cab. Mr Morgan was subsequently located at a Coonan Street address, with a gunshot wound to his head.

Following an extensive investigation as part of Operation Uniform Tyne, police dive squad officers recovered a firearm from a northern branch of the Condamine River on July 26, which police will allege was the weapon used in the incident.

The work as part of the master plan for the Lions Park to Sports Club area are all but complete. The driveway from Lions Park is open but please stick to the 10km/hr speed limit as the road is very windy and only wide enough for one vehicle in one direction. Please do not use the alternate route via Carinya Drive as trucks may still need to use this entry to drop off and take materials and after Saturday’s rain is very wet. Our annual general meeting will be held on Sunday 28th August at 11am followed by a barbecue lunch. A good crowd would be good so we can go forward in Spring and get some functions happening. Robbie Sefton believes that while there is no overnight solution to this situation greater community understanding of the importance of agriculture will benefit the whole industry from helping to protect our current biosecurity status to encouraging consumption of more Australian grown products.Onthe topic of leadership, Ms Sefton believed that empowering people was the key to great leadership.

A poll of three hundred guests at a Farming Futures Dinner at the University of New England in Armidale identified biosecurity as the major concern for farming communities.

Other major concerns highlighted in the poll were climate change 38 per cent, workforce labour challenges 36 per cent and water availability, cost and policy 30 per cent.

“You can’t have all the knowledge so we need to surround ourself with people who do have the knowledge,” she said.“Agriculture’s push to be a $100 billion industry by 2030 is very achievable but to do it we need to have the right people in the driver’s seat and from what I saw and heard from the students I met in Armidale, I feel we’re in safe hands.”

Managing Director of communications company Sefton’s, Robbie Sefton said the question was based around research from the National Farmers Federation that found 83 per cent of Australians described their connection with agriculture as “distant or non existent.”

Members of the audience were also asked for their thoughts on the awareness and understanding of all Australians of the agriculture industry and how important that was if the industry was to maintain its current economic trajectory.Anoverwhelming 95 per cent of respondents agreed it was vital to increase the awareness of Australians from non farming communities as to the importance of agriculture to all Australians and the economy as a whole.

Fifty-six percent of responders gave biosecurity as the top priority which, given the recent concern over Foot and Mouth disease and the varroa mite crisis facing the bee industry, was not an unexpected outcome.

AUSVEG, Australia’s peak industry body for vegetable and potato growers, has welcomed the announcement from Federal Agriculture Minister Senator Murray Watt of Australia’s first National Biosecurity Strategy. The strategy, which comes after a National Biosecurity Statement was agreed to in 2018, has been agreed to by federal, state and territory ministers and will help ensure that governments and industry work together to protect Australia from the threat of harmful pests and diseases.AUSVEG CEO Michael Coote (pictured right) said that industry has been calling for a long-term, ongoing support for the nation’s biosecurity system, with recent biosecurity threats and incursions proof that biosecurity is too important to be left to chance. “As we have seen recently, ensuring Australia has a strong and well-resourced biosecurity system is vital for Australia’s agriculture industry and important for the health and safety of every Australian,” Mr Coote said. ““AUSVEG has been a vocal supporter of a coordinated, long-term, ongoing funding model that ensures the nation’s biosecurity system is well-resourced and effective.”

“The HL Reservoir is undersized and does not provide sufficient pressure to all areas in Wyreema,” the report said. “Replacing the HL Reservoir with a booster pump station resolves minimum pressure issues in the network.

The report notes that there are currently pressure concerns in parts of the town. The existing maximum pressure is less than ideal in many parts of the north-east and north (Karara Gardens). The existing minimum pressure is even less ideal, affecting the same areas as well as the western part of town.

The estimated cost for the works in $470,000. The standpipe on Cambooya Wyreema Road.

“The existing network does not meet non-residential fireflow requirements.

A report commissioned by Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) has several recommendations aimed at improving Wyreema’s water supply as the town expands. The Wyreema water supply network services a population of approximately 1,950 with 680 current active water connections.Completed by Paul Quinlan, Principal Engineer Network Planning, the ‘Wyreema Water Supply Study’ was presented to TRC’s Waste and Water Committee last week. The report notes the most recent study of the Wyreema water supply network was completed in August 2013. Since then, Wyreema has been connected to the Toowoomba Bulk Water Supply via a connection to Westbrook. The report says Wyreema’s water supply scheme was previously supplied by three bores located on Love Road, Newman Road and Hartvigsen Road. “These bores fed directly into a 2 ML Ground Level (GL) reservoir on Newman Road, which was then pumped to a High Level (HL) reservoir that services the reticulation network. “Due to quality and quantity issues these bores were decommissioned and a connection to the TBWS at Westbrook was completed in 2016,” the report said. There are currently two standpipes in the Wyreema network located on Love Road and Wyreema Cambooya Road. The Love Road standpipe utilises the old supply main from the Love Road bore to the reservoir and is used by the public. The second standpipe, located near the railway on Cambooya Wyreema Road, is a dedicated standpipe for council use for water carting to southern towns such as Clifton.

Member for Groom Garth Hamilton has been appointed Deputy Chair of the House Standing Committee on Economics. Mr Hamilton said Toowoomba Region will have its voice heard in one of parliament’s most powerful institutions as the Committee can directly question the nation’s key financial institutions and regulators, including the Reserve Bank. The Committee also has the power to conduct far reaching policy inquiries. Mr Hamilton said it was a great honour to have been appointed to the role and looked forward to working with Chair Dr Daniel Mulino. “This is a crucial time for economic policy in this country with the rubber hitting the road in terms of rising interest rates and inflation,” he said. “Toowoomba Region’s businesses, industry and households will have a unique take on the impact of these national issues, and I’m here to listen. “I will be reaching out to key stakeholders in our local area, and I’d also encourage the community to get involved.”

Members of the Task Force said they were excited about the opportunities that would flow from the Games. Some of the opportunities may include infrastructure projects, upgrades to sporting facilities, and the chance to create a legacy for regional Queensland. “During the games there will be millions of visitors coming to this part of the world and we want to harness every opportunity to promote our region both before they come and while they are here.” Ali Davenport said. Task force member Kylie Bourne said, ”I am always excited to see opportunities for our region and the Olympic games has so much potential before, during and after the event. “What an incredible legacy it would be if people decided to stay on here after the games are over”. Whatever infrastructure benefits come to the region as a result of the 2032 Olympic Games, there is no doubt the construction of a fast rail connection to Brisbane would be a gold medal prize for the region.

Olympic Gold for Toowoomba Region

The 2032 Olympic Games may seem to be a long way off but a task force of regional leaders has already been formed with the objective of identifying how the Toowoomba region can benefit from the vast capital expenditure needed to host the Games. One exciting piece of infrastructure being floated by Toowoomba Regional Council Mayor Paul Antonio is the prospect of the long awaited fast train connection from Toowoomba to Brisbane. Mayor Antonio believes there are many ancillary benefits to come from the 2032 games for the Toowoomba region with the fast rail being one such project. Members of the inaugural taskforce include Toowoomba and Surat Basin Enterprise Chief Executive Officer Ali Davenport, TSBE colleague Mark Mason, Toowoomba Mayor Paul Antonio, Western Downs Regional Councillor Kylie Bourne, Todd Rohl (Toowoomba Chamber of Commerce), Peter Holman (Southern Queensland Country Tourism), TAFE South West Queensland Michele Berkhout, Damien Bell (Wagner Corporation), Willows Health Group’s Troy Morgan, and Mark McErvale (Aspect Group).

Johnathon is acting Principal Flute of the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra, Sydney. He will be performing along with several members of the Brisbane Philharmonic Orchestra.

Harpist Emily Granger and flautist Johnathon Henderson will be joined by members of the Brisbane Philharmonic Orchestra at St. Luke’s Hall in Toowoomba on Sunday week to perform works by Mozart, Vaughan-Williams, Faure and Schoeberg.

Emily Granger said that as a harpist she was incredibly passionate about promoting the instrument to audiences to showcase its capabilities. “People often associate the harp as an ‘angelic’ and ‘beautiful’ instrument, which it is, but it’s also an incredibly diverse instrument and our program really demonstrates this,” Emily said. The program of music is diverse and designed to showcase the versatility of the harp in both classical and modern settings. The concert will also feature acclaimed flautist Johnathon Henderson.

The Jones family won first place with their detailed red Massey-Ferguson.

The tractor memorial run, organised by Des from the Lockyer area, travelled from Gatton, through Helidon, the back of Haldon and on to Greenmount, stopping for lunch at Emu Creek State School. In support of the event, our families held a ‘Make a tractor’ competition with families building a tractor at home from different recycled or re-purposed materials. There was a variety of tractors on the day - both in the trek and hand-made. Our thanks to Des, John Deere and the P&C for donating prizes for all the entries.

It was a Matthew Christensen try fifteen minutes from full time that put the game up for the taking. Boars’ finishers Luke Buckle and Woodbridge ran in tries to have the scoreboard locked at 22-all with 73 minutes gone on the Platz Oval clock, but the result was sealed five minutes later when Duggan broke the deadlock with a classic right foot drop goal from just under twenty metres out. Aside from Duggan and full-back Jackson Green, backrower Tyson Stevens’ run of superb form continues. In a courageous effort carrying injury, Wattles skipper/coach Travis Burns took the field against one of the competition’s top line-ups.Thementor’s determination is fuelled by a hunger for a Wattles top grade premiership, and Burns first in the senior ranks at any level. The Warriors will aim up for their ninth straight win when they run on to Father Ranger Oval this Saturday evening in the local derby against the Warwick Cowboys.

The green and gold line-up to take on Warwick will be less injured quality forwards Jordan Crocker and Mitch Koina who will return for the final’s series. Wattles 23 (Jackson Green, Aaron Hooper, Brendon McBryde, Matthew Christensen tries; Matt Duggan 3 goals & field goal) defeated Goondiwindi 22

Clive Berghofer Land Sales Reserve Grade premiership front-runners the Tony Morris Tiling Wattles Warriors had no problems accounting for Goondiwindi eventually running in seven tries to three in a dominant 38 to 16 success. Wattles 38 (Josh Henry, Alex Morris, Lachlan Henry, Darby Peardon, Joe Morris, Mitchell Duff, Tim Hentschel tries; Tom Morris 5 goals) defeated Goondiwindi 16

On the other hand, Wattles sharp shooter Duggan was on target with three goals from four shots before sealing the win with the vital field goal that locked his side into second place on the TRL A Grade Premiership ladder.

The Boars rolled up to play and had the Warriors measure, crossing for five touchdowns to the home side’s four, the visitors’ fullback Chris Woodbridge on fire with a try double. But the Boars’ normally reliable kicker, half-back Trae Bennetto, struggled to find the black dot, successful with a single conversion from five attempts.

Recently, two students from Bunker’s Hill State School competed in the State Cross Country titles held at Yatala. The two competitors, Sam and Luke, both put in gusty efforts and ran extremely well in their age groups. Sam was first reserve in his age group, just missing out on being selected for the Queensland team and Luke came second in his race, gaining selection in the Queensland team for the Multiclass competition. That means Luke is off to Adelaide at the end of August to compete at the National Cross Country Competition. We wish Luke all the best and we hope he has a great time representing Queensland!

Wattles win by a point Wattles got home on the boot of star playmaker Matt Duggan in a colossal tussle at Platz Oval on Sunday, just a 77-minute field goal the difference to allow the Stillwater Pastoral Company Warriors a 23-22 victory over the Goondiwindi Boars, the reigning TRL Premiers.

Tries by Boars winger Geoff Prince and captain/coach and lock Travis Waddell had Wattles on the back foot trailing 10-0 after ten minutes of play. But the Warriors levelled up through Jackson Green and Aaron Hooper, before forward pack giant Brendon McBryde slipped through the defence to allow Wattles a 16-10 half time advantage.Whilethe home team finished on the upside of the first stanza, three Goondiwindi second half touchdowns had Wattles back peddling by the later stages.
