The facility includes a 30 metre monopole, nine panel antennas, ancillary equipment and an equipment shelter contained within a solid fence, with a retaining wall to be established on the eastern boundary of the compound. Amplitel identified the need to install a telecommunications facility on the site to improve both voice and data services within the surrounding area. There were 13 other sites considered for the location of the tower, which were decided against for various reasons. These reasons included being too close to houses, future plans for the surrounding land, needing to negotiate with the local council, not being able to contact landholders, landholders who were not interested and landholders with whom Amplitel was unable to come to an agreement. After the application was first submitted, the Council planner sought clarification on a few minor areas including the design of the retaining wall and stormwater runoff concerns.

Grain growers will hear about the latest in grains research and innovation. GRDC Senior Regional Manager Gillian Meppem said GRDC’s Research Updates are the perfect opportunity for growers and advisers to network with industry and learn about the ways in which the grains industry is evolving. “These regional events aim to deliver the latest in news, research and technology through presentations tailored to each region, to ensure that growers and advisers can apply the research presented to their farm businesses,” she said. GRDC National Grain Storage Extension Project Coordinator Chris Warrick will be presenting at all three events, with timely information on managing chickpea and cereal quality in on farm storage. NSW Department of Primary Industries Cereal Plant Pathologist Dr Steven Simpfendorfer will be providing an update on crown rot management, with growers urged to be cautious of the disease this year due to high occurrences last year and ongoing wet conditions. GRDC Grower Relations Manager – North Graeme Sandral said the northern region had a challenging start to the 2022 season, with untimely rainfall causing implications for sowing windows, crop protection and logistics. “Now that most growers have crops in the ground, we wanted to ensure they have access to the latest information that could help them increase their productivity and capitalise on good soil moisture,” he said.

GOODBYE MRS HIGTON Our much-loved teacher aide at Vale View State School since 2008, Maureen Higton announced her retirement at the end of last term. Over the years Mrs Higton has offered support and kindness to many of our students, parents and staff. “Mrs Higton has been a massive asset to Vale View, for as long as I remember and has been a tremendous support and friend to my children,” commented P&C president Amanda Ruhle. As well as supporting our Prep students during her time with us, Mrs Higton has been a constant participant at our school camps where she has cared for our students and supported them so that they can enjoy the whole camp experience. Reading is a real strength at Vale View which has been encouraged through Mrs Higton’s work in the library and organisation of Book Fairs. Each year Mrs Higton has personally sought out a book for every student to present to them as a memento of their year at Vale View. New rules protect against SMS scams
The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has registered new rules that will protect Australians against SMS scams. The rules require all telecommunications providers to identify, trace and block SMS scams. They also require providers to publish information to assist their customers to proactively manage and report SMS scams, to share information about scam messages with other mobile providers and report identified scams to authorities. Minister for Communications Michelle Rowland said these new rules aim to disrupt scammers’ business models, which will help to protect vulnerable Australians against scammers accessing their bank account, social media and online businesses. It takes scammers an average of 7 days from the initial theft of personal and account information for criminals to commit multiple identity crimes with that information. According to the ACCC, Australians lost more than $2 billion to scams in 2021. These rules follow separate new anti-scam rules that came into force on 30 June 2022, requiring telecommunication providers to use multi-factor authentification before approving high-risk customer transactions, including SIM swap. Providers will face penalties of up to $250,000 for breaching ACMA directions to comply with the rules.

Cambooya State School YEAR 3/4/5 SCIENCE FUN First week back at school has been a full of hands-on fun for the Year 3/4/5 class at Cambooya State School. Students have been carrying out a variety of fun science experiments, from making ooblek to investigating temperature and light. The students in this classroom have had a fun filled week. Did you know that there is a solid that can behave like a liquid or that even in iced water there is some form of heat? These are the types of conversations the students have been having this week. The year 3/4/5s have had some fun, but they have certainly learnt some great science as well.

LEARNING TO SEW Our 3-6 class has enjoyed working on a sewing project to create a cushion or a neck guard for bike riding. Throughout the project, students have learned how to trace and cut a pattern, prepare material for sewing and use a sewing machine. Our students were surprised at how long it took to sew something and at how hard it was to operate a sewing machine. RIGHT: Issy sewed her cushion and included a horse silhouette.
ABOVE: Carter and Harry with the neck guards that they designed and sewed.
