Facelift for Cambooya Hall
After decades of gradual decline into a worsening condition, Cambooya Public Hall is currently receiving a $200,000 renewal of its exterior as part of the 2021/22 Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) Annual Budget. The work, which started a few weeks ago, is scheduled to be completed in July. TRC said the refurbishment includes exterior painting and the replacement of roof sheeting, which are both in poor condition and where necessary the roofing structure will also be replaced, as will damaged external wood boards on the fascia of the building. Clare Coughlan, Secretary of Cambooya Public Hall Association, which operates Cambooya Hall, said the repairs came as a much welcomed surprise. “It exceeded our expectations,” Mrs Coughlan said. “We knew nothing about it. “Over a ten-year period we’ve had no contact with Council about it other than having expressed in surveys as a committee that we can’t afford the repairs the hall needs.” The high cost of repainting the hall is due to the existing paint being lead-based, which Mrs Coughlan said is a very expensive procedure. The poor condition of the roofing structure has required it all to be replaced. Mrs Coughlan said TRC’s goal that the renewal work will maintain the historic features of the building is very important. Joan England, Treasurer of Association, said it was “wonderful” that the repairs are underway. “We could never have done it as a committee,” Mrs England said. “We had a grant once but the repairs went way beyond anything the hall committee could ever contemplate doing.” Mrs England said she believed the roof structure was original to the building, which dates back to 1908. “It is original as far as I’m aware,” she said. Mrs England has been Treasurer for twelve years and on the committee for over twenty years. The lead paint job on the building’s exterior is also believed to be at least 30 years old. Mrs England said now that work on the exterior of the

Cambooya Hall is owned by Toowoomba Regional Council. INSIDE THIS ISSUE INSIDE THIS ISSUE

QFF: Not enough substance in Budget
The 2021-22 Queensland State Budget has received mixed feelings from the Queensland Farmers’ Federation, which believes it appears to be all style and not enough substance. The Queensland Government’s list of key agricultural seasonal employment gaps in regional areas highlights of the 2021-22 budget include: •$52.3 million in electricity rebates is available for regional •Continued support for producers and communities affected farmers, businesses and manufacturers through the Electricity by the ongoing drought with funding of up to $71.4 million Tariff Adjustment Scheme (ETAS) over four years for the Drought Assistance and Reform The Queensland Farmers’ Federation (QFF) and industry Package – assisting producers to prepare for, manage, and members are underwhelmed by the 2021-22 State Budget recover from future droughts which appears to be all style and not enough substance. •Increased investment in Biosecurity Operations of $8.8 QFF CEO Dr Georgina Davis said QFF commends the million over four years state government for investing $71.4 million over four years •An additional $2.6 million in 2021-22 to enhance in the Queensland Drought Assistance and Reform Package implementation of the Australian Government’s Pacific to support farmers experiencing the impacts of drought on Labour Scheme and Seasonal Worker Programme to fill their properties and ensuring this assistance is more equitable across the state’s various agricultural commodities. “However, the Budget failed to abolish stamp duty on agricultural insurance and establish a Discretionary Mutual Fund to provide a flexible option for crop insurance and empower farmers with a long-term industry owned tool for managing risk for when the rain does fall,” she said. Dr Davis said the state government needed to demonstrate a more strategic intent towards agriculture and long term, targeted stimulus-type investment if the sector was to take the next step change forward. “Our sector is the only one that can deliver food security, environmental sustainability and economic opportunity for relatively low risk,” she said. Dr Davis said the QFF has welcomed the ETAS rebate announced by the state government to assist farmers transitioning to new retail tariffs but noted the funding would do little to address existing energy affordability issues. “The electricity rebate is a positive step forward to providing some relief to these farmers but locks them into minimum 5 per cent annual bill increases for the next nine years,” she said. There are still over 20,000 electricity users in regional Queensland on obsolete and transitional tariffs, of which more Keeping it Local than half were for farming and irrigation purposes. Letters To the Editor COUNTRY ROADS To the Editor, Cr Carol Taylor has spent 13.6 million on trucks from the Infrastructure Budget to transport water to surrounding districts, but, how does she justify this when we have country roads which are no more than dusty tracks or muddy pot holes where cars become bogged. Then we wait one month for the road to be cleared passing large trucks where the road is reduced to one track. The water situation comes down to not listen to country people in the past. There is a new budget but what is new, no fair distribution of funds, monies going to Toowoomba, Highfields and parks and gardens? Country residents are continually told no funds for upgrades, (we are all over that story). We wait one month and we eventually get the band-aid maintenance of grade the dirt off and on again, roll and water which lasts a few weeks depending on the weather. An excavator had to be used to clear the road. Cr Carol Taylor is reflecting on Infrastructure for games in 2032, but, what a about our right to have a decent road to properties. Residents in this area have been paying rates since settlement and we still have only dirt track for our rates. We need more new blood in Infrastructure to rid the out the old culture of band-aiding is good enough for country people. Country folk have been through years of drought with limited incomes. These roads are damaging the 4x4 vehicles we require to drive these roads, to say nothing of the health concerns from the dust, and of the state of the vehicles we drive from mud or the continual dust. The previously undefeated and first-place Goondiwindi Boars took their first loss this season in arguably the competition’s best match so far against the Travis Burns-led Wattles side which won 30-22. The Boars’ parochial supporters cheered on a full-strength outfit against coach Travis Burns’ Warriors line-up that was dented with the absence of key forwards Dale Perkins and Ty Gardner away on representative duty. With player/coach Burns calling the green & gold shots his Wattles outfit did what no other side had over the current season, beating the Boars, and on their home track. From the outset Wattles showed their opponents they had come to play, snatching an early lead after Player of the Match Burns set up the first try when he ran to the line and sent imposing forward Cooper Tate-Roche on a sprint to the try line. With fifteen minutes until half time Wattles capitalised on a glut of possession and winger Matt Christensen scored off the end of a classy team play. Five minutes later with the score locked at 10 all, a Wattles loose pass tumbled to the ground and the pill there for the taking. While possession was there for either side, Wattles’ centre Steve Eliott scooped up the ball and scored out wide on the cusp of half time. Play restarted with Wattles ahead 16–10, and after a few minutes Malcolm McGrady, touched down for the locals to again lock the scoreboard, this time at 16–16. In the 52nd minute, Wattles’ Matt Christensen scored his second try out wide to have his side leading again 20–16. Ten minutes later Eliott set up a brilliant try, outclassing the defence breaking away just inside his own half. With the Boars’ sprinters gaining, he offloaded to supporting Matt Duggan to score and have Wattles ease ahead 24-16. Soon after, David Armstrong scored off a bomb to have the home side trailing 24–22 setting up a blistering final ten minutes. Wattles were hanging on to the narrow lead and as the fulltime siren was set to sound, Eliott leapt high to catch a Travis Burns bomb, scoring and sealing an amazing green and gold win. Wattles take on the Oakey Bears this weekend at Clifton, in the last round before the TRL mid-season finals. Wattles 30 (Matthew Christensen 2, Steven Elliott 2, Matt Duggan, Cooper Tate-Roche tries Matt Duggan 2 goals) defeated Goondiwindi 22 RESERVE GRADE Goondiwindi 24 drew with Wattles 24 Ben Duff, Brendan Wilson, and then Lachlan Henry, Tom Morris kicked all goals. UNDER 18 Goondiwindi 50 defeated Wattles 10 (Jacob Meddleton, Eli McKinney tries; Ethan Le Sueur goals). - Glyn Rees
