Give the gift of charity this Christmas
By David Lee AS Christmas fast approaches there is one place you can purchase a gift that will go toward helping the many charity organisations across Australia, the Shepparton Charity Christmas Card and Gift Shop. Running from their new location at 245 Wyndham Street in Shepparton, the Charity Christmas Card and Gift Shop offers the Goulburn Valley community a great selection of handmade and professionally made items from various charity organisations including cards, calendars, baskets made by the visually impaired, coat hangers, aprons, bags and the Shepparton Lions Club’s Christmas cakes and puddings. Hospice Volunteer for the Shepparton Charity Christmas Card and Gift Shop, Henk Van Ryn said, “We have a couple of new items this year. We have gift memberships, cards and framed pressed flowers from the Friends of Australian Botanical Gardens Shepparton and memberships for Kaiela Art Gallery. “Of course we still have the great range of items we had last year,” Henk said. Secretary of the Shepparton Lions Club, Terry Collison said, “Traditional Lions Christmas cakes and puddings are now available at the Charity Christmas Card and Gift Shop until mid-December. “Only Australian fruit goes into these deliciously moist and tasty cakes. “All proceeds go to support local Lions Club projects and home or business delivery can be arranged by calling 0439 468 786,” Terry said. The Shepparton Charity Christmas Card and Gift Shop is open during the rest of November and until December 21 from Monday to Friday, 9:30am to 4:30pm and includes Saturdays from 9:30am to 12pm.
Assist those in need this Christmas CHRISTMAS is meant to be a time of celebration, but with one in eight Australian people living in poverty, one in six of whom are children, it is shaping up to be the most stressful time of the year for thousands of families. Leading community service provider UnitingCare Cutting Edge and Target Australia are calling on all Australians to spread the festive spirit by participating in Operation Santa. Running until Monday, December 23 Operation Santa helps to ensure that children in families doing it tough do not miss out on the joy of opening a Christmas present by generously donating gifts at their local Target or Target Country store. UnitingCare Cutting Edge Local Coordinator, Dominique Cosgriff said, “Imagine not being able to provide Christmas presents for your children. This is the bleak prospect facing thousands of families this Christmas. “All you need to do to help is look for the Operation Santa tree at any Target or Target Country store, take a gift tag from the tree and donate a gift for someone in need. You can also donate a gift card by selecting a dollar amount tag from the tree and taking it to any Target store register, where a team member will organise the donation. “All gifts are given to people in the local community where they were donated,” Dominique said.

Open your hearts and give THE season of giving is here and while most people are rushing around starting or finishing their Christmas preparations, The Salvation Army are calling on the community to open their hearts and help give to those less fortunate through their Christmas Appeal. Through the appeal last year, The Salvation Army helped to put smiles on the faces of 7,500 people and 300 families in the Goulburn Valley alone through 2,500 toys being generously donated by the community and 180 food hampers provided to families in need. The Salvation Army Corps Officer, Lieutenant Andrew Stringer said, “We are again looking for people to donate toys or other goods as well as make donations to help us help those in need around the region. “We are hoping to raise $15,000 this year, which all goes back toward helping people locally. “We are also calling on people to volunteer for our toy distribution centre as well as for collecting at local shopping centres leading up to Christmas,” Lt Stringer said. For further information or to register your interest in being a volunteer, contact Andrew Stringer on 5821 2666.

Season for giving arrives THE season of giving is upon us and in the spirit of giving to those less fortunate, Kmart together with The Salvation Army have launched this year’s Wishing Tree appeal. Running for 26 years, the appeal has seen more than 6 million gifts collected and last year brought smiles to the faces of more than 300 local children. The Salvation Army Corps Officer, Lieutenant Andrew Stringer said, “We are hoping the appeal will go further this year so we can help more children. “We find that younger kids are well catered for so we’d like to see some gifts for older kids and
teenagers such as gift cards. “To see smiles on children’s faces and helping those families out there who are doing it tough makes my job all worth while,” Andrew said. Kmart Shepparton Store Manager, Nathan Battle said, “This is Australia’s largest gift giving appeal at Christmas time. “The tree is for everyone; kids, teenagers, adults and babies. “Customers simply come in and grab a tag from the tree, fill it in, attach it to the gift and put it in the collection box.
“The gifts don’t have to be purchased form Kmart to make a donation. “It’s all about making sure underprivileged kids get a fair chance at Christmas,” Nathan said. Greater Shepparton City Council, Cr Fern Summer said, “We are proud that the appeal is now a Christmas tradition, not only for Kmart and The Salvation Army, but for thousands of Australians who donate each year,” Fern said. The 2013 Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal will run throughout November until Christmas Eve and this year aims to collect more than 500,000 gifts nationally.

AVOID POST CHRISTMAS PRESSURE… Make planning for Christmas even easier with a Christmas Club account at your local GMCU. Pictured, GMCU Compliance Manager, Brett Elgar. Photo: Alicia Niglia.
Make your next Christmas debt free ARE you worried about the cost of Christmas? Are you anxious about your credit card bill in January? Are you left wondering how you can afford Christmas in the future? If you are, don’t worry because with a little planning there is an answer. According to GMCU Compliance Manager, Brett Elgar, a Christmas Club account can put an end to those post-Christmas financial blues. “Christmas can be an extremely expensive time of year and can leave people financially exhausted and/or with the burden of credit card debt which isn’t interest free. It’s not only the presents that you don’t want to deny your family and friends that you love and care for. Ask the person in charge of the grocery purchases around Christmas time to find out the expense of one or two Christmas family meals. We sit down to a meal with turkey, ham and pudding and do not consider how our mum, wife or partner squeezed it out of a normal household budget.” A Christmas Club account allows you to start saving now, so that by the time Christmas comes around next year, you will be well prepared. Christmas Club accounts are also a great way of saving for those who normally find saving difficult. “Our Christmas Club account is an easy way to save because you can automate a direct credit and in mid November it is transferred into your normal savings account for spending.” “You will be amazed at how quick the funds accumulate even with just small weekly or monthly contributions, and these are contributions of your choice.” Mr Elgar added that with a Christmas Club account you can set yourself an achievable savings target and the target does not only have to be for Christmas expenses, it may be for educational costs that turn up early in the next year. Costs of books, uniforms and school fees all seem to turn up at a time when your household budget is under post-Christmas pressure. To find out more about opening a Christmas Club account contact a local branch of your GMCU. GMCU has branches throughout central Victoria, each with experienced lenders who can help home buyers with their choices, including branches in Shepparton, Mooroopna, Numurkah, Kyabram, Echuca.
