Investing support for local manufacture Rubicon, and Campbell’s Soups and the up-and-coming manufacturers such a Frontline Trays and Trailers, just to name a few. “While there is demand for these products across the globe, it is important that the community also supports Australian made products, especially those produced locally. “Australian made products are not just our big brands but also the small entrepreneurial businesses popping up in our region. They often offer an easy way to purchase their products online. “The Goulburn Valley has always prided itself on manufacturing the best quality products, and with our support, we will continue to do so for generations. “Buying locally is an investment in jobs and our future,” she concluded.

By Suzanna Sheed SHEPPARTON is home to any number of small Australia made manufacturers, often working in industries we might never notice. In looking towards Australia Made Week, local Member for Shepparton District, Suzanna Sheed, took some time out to call in on Frontline Trays and Trailers, a relatively new manufacturer in Mitchell Street, Shepparton. “The Goulburn Valley is the heartland of manufacturing in Northern Victoria,” said Ms Sheed. “ We p r o du c e p r o du c t s t h at a r e internationally renowned and of the highest quality. “Just look at our clean and green manufacturers such as SPC, Bega, Furphy’s,

GLOBAL travel restrictions and the prolonged closure of international boarders are said to be a few of the key factors driving the continued rising interest in and support of Australianmade goods. With new consumer research, a recent report, by Roy Morgan showing that the consumer preference for Australian Made products continued to rise throughout the course of 2020, with a total increase of six percent growth show against the year prior, and 93 percent of Australians, now stating they are inclined to buy Australian made products. Roy Morgan Chief Executive Officer, Michele Levine, noted Australian-made goods have seen huge growth in terms of domestic support. “A large majority of (93 percent) of Australians say they are more likely to buy a product that is made in Australia. While less than one percent say they are less likely to buy a product that is made in Australia,” she said. The preference for Australian Made goods is very high across all age groups, however it is the 96 percent of Baby Boomers and 94 percent of Generation X, who are most likely to prefer Australian made products over other generations. Australian Made Chief Executive, Ben Lazzaro, said Roy Morgan’s latest research comes as no surprise, with more and more Australians looking to the green and gold

Australian made logo, to ensure they are purchasing quality, Australian made products. “Australia’s over-reliance on imported products has been highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic. “This research shows Australians are placing priority on onshore manufacturing and job creation, along with a renewed appetite to address the imbalance between locally made and imported products to ensure Australia’s long-term prosperity. “W hen you buy Australian Made, Australian Grown products, you know what you are getting - products made to the highest of manufacturing standards and grown in our clean, green environment. At the same time, you are helping to support our manufacturing industry, create Aussie jobs and give back to local communities.” Almost all Australians, 99 percent in fact, are aware of the Australian Made logo, with the vast majority (92 percent) saying they feel confident that the products displaying the logo are made here in Australia. 97% of Australians also associate the iconic kangaroo logo with the support of local jobs and employment opportunities, 95% with safe and high-quality products, 89% with the use of ethical labour and 78% with sustainability. Freedom Foods Group makes ‘Pink Gold’ PUREnFERRIN™ Lactoferrin right here in Shepparton FREEDOM Foods Group is well known for its Australia’s Own, MILKLAB and other UHT milk and cream brands, which remain a cornerstone of its strategic direction and ongoing success. But Freedom Foods Group has also quietly become one of the world’s biggest producers of lactoferrin, an ironbinding immune system protein extracted directly from fresh cow’s milk that is so valuable it has earned the name ‘Pink Gold’. PUREnFERRIN™ Lactoferrin, produced at their Shepparton facility, is a key part of Freedom Foods Group’s future and its vision to provide leading, innovative nutritional products with real benefits to consumers. While lactoferrin’s health benefits are well known,

interest in lactoferrin’s ability to help combat various viruses has been gathering momentum around the world, and especially since the COVID-19 pandemic hit. In a world-first, Australian researchers at The University of Newcastle are now investigating if PUREnFERRIN™ Lactoferrin can manage or stop coronaviruses in their tracks, as well as other common cold causing viruses. Freedom Foods Group is recognised as one of Australia’s leading investors in state-of-the-art nutritional, food and beverage manufacturing capabilities. At their Shepparton facility, Freedom Foods is leading the way in developing innovative, best-in-class consumer products using PUREnFERRIN™ and other premium dairy protein ingredients.

ACCORDING to Roy Morgan Research, if every household across the country, spent an additional $10 a week on purchasing Australian made products, it would generate an extra $5 Billion into the local economy annually; and potentially, the creation of up to 11,000 additional, new jobs. The same research says that 93 percent of Australians prefer buying products made in Australia, and that nine out of ten Aussies believe we should be producing more products locally, following the COVID pandemic. T he newly introduced, Australian Made Week provides Australians with the oppor tunit y to take a moment, to consciously reassess their choices, to reevaluate their shopping habits and make the decision to prioritise purchasing Australian made products.

Australian Made Chief Executive Ben Lazzaro echoed the sentiment, saying Australian Made Week was a great time to focus on the benefits of buying local. "When you buy Australian Made, not only are you getting products made to some of the highest standards in the world, you create jobs, now and into the future, and support thousands of Australians throughout the supply chain. "Manufacturing is an essential part of our economy. Every Australian Made product purchased is directly supporting a sector of 900,000 people and thousands of businesses across the supply chain. One job in manufacturing produces three to four jobs in other parts of the economy," he said. Learn more about Australian Made Week and find genuine Aussie products at www.australianmadeweek.com.au.

Manufacturing medical grade face masks against increasing overseas competition, the pandemic highlighted the fault of us living with a dependency on global supply. Shepparton company Medcon were manufacturing around 2 million masks a year at that stage and within the next twelve months, had ramped up their manufacture capability to produce 90 million masks, largely at the behest of the Federal Government. Pental: Not just an Australian manufacturer, a global brands distribution specialist THERE is something comforting in learning many Australian household brand-name products are manufactured and distributed from a global brands distribution specialist right here in the Goulburn Valley. From its manufacturing plant and distribution centre in Shepparton, products such as White King, Jiffy, Huggie, Softly, Lux Flakes, Aim, Sunlight dishwashing liquid and Velvet, to name a few of their portfolio of iconic brand names, are shipped all over Australia and abroad. Pental also distribute the famous Duracell battery brand all over the nation right here from Shepparton. During the COVID period the Pental team have been busy supplying the nation with much needed hygiene and sanitation products from soap, antibacterial handwash, disinfectants, bleach and now, hand sanitizer. A new state-of-the-art hand sanitizer plant is the most recent capital works project for the Shepparton site with the plant able to produce 30,000 litres every shift. The sanitizer has been developed to cater for all market categories from 60ml to 20 litre formats available across White King, Country Life and Aim brands. Pental’s Shepparton plant is the only site in Australia that manufactures, from scratch, hand sanitiser, bar soap and antibacterial hand wash, all from the one site. The need

for these products has strengthened during the course of the pandemic, giving Pental an opportunity to support the nation with much-needed new products across the household cleaning and personal wash markets. The sentiment from the Pental team is

that any products produced in Shepparton can be relied upon by all consumers to meet their household and personal hygiene and sanitation needs through their robust innovation research and development pipeline and ISO accredited practices. Carmine Conte, Pental site manager,

added, “No one wants to see a pandemic in any form, all we hope for here at Pental is that the nation’s hygiene and sanitation behaviors and habits continue and the nation sees the value in supporting Australian made quality products like Pental’s.”

Locally made and designed FROM small beginnings as a local builder to establishing PJ’s Concrete Pumping and then onto PJ’s 4×4, Peter Don, a name synonymous with business acumen in our region, is also the brains behind Donway Caravans along with son Keelan. In 2018, Peter bought himself a 1956 DON Caravan as a collector’s item and was overwhelmed with memories of camping and caravanning with his family over the years. Peter and his son, Keelan wanted to bring the joy and ability to travel around Australia to everyone, and thus with their extensive business knowledge Donway Caravans began. Donway Caravans is now officially a new MILLARD caravan dealership in the Goulburn region and we are proud to present our new range of caravans. Our trusted brand

A recent international research project, saw a total of 4,404 participants surveyed across six, uniquely diverse, export markets in an effort to gain insight into the personal impression and subsequent opinion, of the Australian Made ‘brand’. The research piece, conducted by Horizon Consumer Science, was carried out with the help of contributors from Canada, China, France, United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom as well as the USA. The findings showed that more than two thirds of consumers were easily able to recognise Australia, as the country of origin for products carrying the iconic green and gold Australian Made logo. Of the collective, 97 percent of the international consumers reported a positive first impression of our

national logo, with a further 85 percent of consumers saying they were confident to place trust in the Australian Made brand. Horizon Consumer Science CEO, Ian Cesa, said, “The presence of the Australian Made logo arouses consumers curiosity. In a shopping environment that is well stocked with products from other countries the presence of the Australian Made logo makes Australian brands and products stand out.” Australian Made, chief executive, Ben Lazzaro, further stated that the new research findings were very encouraging as the Australian Made logo has provided an effective way for shoppers around the world to identify genuine Australian products for more than 34 years.

“The Australian Made logo makes a clear and instant connection to Australia. As Australia’s only registered country of origin certification trademark, the logo is the true mark of Aussie authenticity and is central to the export strategies of Aussie brands. We hope to further build on the logo’s strong overseas presence and reinforce Australia’s reputation for high-quality, clean, green products,” said Mr Lazzaro. Horizon Consumer Science’s new international findings build on the already strong domestic presence of the logo, with a recent Roy Morgan study finding 99 percent of Australians recognise the Australian branding and 92 percent feel confident that products displaying the logo are genuinely made in Australia.

AUSTRALIAN MADE WEEK | 24-30 MAY 2021

Beyond the orchard: reimagining agribusiness in Australia By Robert Giles, SPC CEO THE Goulburn Valley has a rich history as the food bowl of Australia and is the heartland for manufacturing and agribusiness, it’s where SPC got its start over 100 years ago. Today, we’re focused on making Australian-made products but bringing them to the global stage. Last year highlighted Australian consumers are voting with their feet and buying Australian grown and that demand is only continuing to grow. Our sector has the opportunity to continue to be a key driver when it comes to Australia’s post-covid economic recovery, by collaborating to create new products that will appeal to customers locally and globally. Australia’s food and agriculture sector is the envy of the world and we need to ensure it keeps going from strength to strength. After all food supplies one in three Australian manufacturing jobs and value-added food exports have grown from an $18B industry to $28B since 2013. At SPC, we are taking full advantage of this opportunity to bring more high quality and value-added products from Australia to the world. We have made a deliberate decision to disrupt our own thinking when it comes to agribusiness. For a long time, we focused on traditional products like fruit, baked beans and spaghetti. We are moving beyond the orchard because with disruption comes innovation. We have spent a lot of time identifying complementary businesses and sectors of growth that support the work we are doing. Our product line already looks very different, we have already introduced:

TAKING A NEW VISION IN THEIR STRIDE... CEO of SPC, Robert Giles. Photo: Steve Hutcheson

• Ready-made meals: through our Kuisine acquisition • Beverages: through our Helping humans acquisition • New and exciting products like pomegranates: though our Pomlife acquisition • Plant-based meat alternatives: through our Jackfruit product launch • New Australian made flavours: with our joint venturepartner Döhler Food companies around the world know that the demand for value-added products is growing at a phenomenal rate. In Australia, due to the richness of our soil, our agribusiness sector is the envy of the world because we have the ability to produce a vast array of value-added products whether that’s meat, dairy or plant-based. If we can grow it, we will make it. In particular, the Goulburn Valley is in the enviable position to continue to be a key driver, based on our location, our people and the land. Today, we are producing everything from food and beverage to health care products. Additional investment in our region has a significant flow effect on our community from our local restaurants to our sporting clubs, it’s good news for our region. It means that our young people will be enticed to stay here and we will

attract talent to our city and the way of life that we have worked so hard to cultivate here in Shepparton. I’ve worked in agribusiness my entire career and in that time, I’ve keenly watched and been part of companies as they work to diversify and innovate. It’s also why I joined SPC because I wanted to help redefine what the agribusiness model looks like. We are making great strides towards our vision by bringing in a team of people with the expertise and the passion to help us achieve our goals. We’ve recently made several new appointments in our senior leadership team, including our new chief operations officer, Matt McMichael, and chief commercial officer, Bree Vidovich, who bring a wealth of international experience in the FMCG space with brands like Heinz, Nestle and Ferrero. We need to keep working and to keep challenging ourselves to redefine what being an agribusiness means. Whether that’s new and exciting food and beverage products or health and beauty or something else, anything that comes out of the soil, including from the Goulburn Valley, has the potential to help redefine what SPC produces.

Grants of up to $500,000 now available There are plenty of established businesses in our district that are helping our manufacturing sector to grow and I would love to see them apply for the State Government’s Competitiveness Program. The program aims to help small and medium manufacturers with an existing presence in Victoria to expand their operations and implement new manufacturing technologies and processes that provide a critical foundation for generating sustainable new local jobs. Grants of up to $500,000 are available for eligible projects to be completed within 18 months of receiving the grant. Projects can be purchasing and commissioning capital equipment, manufacturing product and process improvements, prototyping, evaluation and testing of new products and processes, and supply chain capability development. Applications for the first funding round are now open, with a second round due to open in August and September.

Australia’s largest manufacturer of infant formula cans OTHER than closely associated people to Jamestrong Kyabram, many of us in the Goulburn Valley wouldn't realise that it's Australia's largest manufacturer of infant formula cans. The Kyabram firm, continues to thrive despite COVID. Founded in the early 1950s, Jamestrong continues to invest in new and advanced machinery and technology for quality and efficiencies for its many corporate clients. "We are the leading supplier of infant formula cans within the Australian market, supplying many of the well-known brands seen in Australian supermarkets and pharmacy chains. Our overall business makes over 500 million cans each year in the Australasian market, underpinned by a robust Food Safety Management Program and independent external certification of ISO22000, ISO9001 and HACCP," said Jamestrong's Andrew Buchan, General Manager of Technical and Research & Development. "We focus strongly on food security and quality with our personnel well-trained in good manufacturing practices along with a very strong safety culture. Our business has been making and supplying cans to Australian customers since the early 1950s and we have long and proud relationships with well-known brands such as Kraft-Heinz and a2. Our focus is on best practices in producing

sustainable and infinitely recyclable products in an environmentally friendly manner. Food security and quality is paramount as can integrity is the major concern for the customer and end user. The company uses Statistical Process Control, which focuses on process capability to drive quality and maintaining the strictest quality control standards." Key products for the broader Jamestrong business include: • Dry Powder (eg. infant formula, milk powder, adult nutrition) • Food (eg. soup, fruit and vegetables, meals) • Pet food (eg. wet dog and cat food) • Personal care aerosols (eg deodorants) • Other aerosols (eg. air fresheners, insecticides) Jamestrong-Kyabram focuses on the manufacture of cans for the nutritional manufacturing industry. With a strategic location in the heart of the Victorian food belt at Kyabram, we service both local and interstate customers. We are specialists in infant formula packaging and have been supplying well-known brands in this category for more than 30 years and have built a strong track record in food safety. In this special Adviser Australian Made… local manufacturing feature, we salute Jamestrong as a resilient and successful manufacturer.

BUDGET 2021 OUR PLAN TO SECURE THE FUTURE OF REGIONAL COMMUNITIES Our plan will help boost our economic recovery, create local jobs and keep our local communities safe. We’ve fought hard to secure extra support for the Goulburn Valley in this Budget because we know that now is the time to create jobs, back manufacturing, stimulate growth and provide a better quality of life for people in the regions. We’re building more roads, delivering more telehealth services and supporting more regional Australians with their small businesses.

And we’re investing in manufacturing, science and research in regional Australia with our $1.5 billion Modern Manufacturing Strategy. We know that more and more Australians are moving to regional Australia and that is why we are investing record amounts in local infrastructure.

100% Australian made since 1864 Aussie made

OVER the past 157 years, Furphy Foundry has grown from an agricultural implement maker, to a diversified foundry and manufacturing company who specialise in 100% Australian made Urban Design Products, Street and Park Furniture and Outdoor Structures. The Furphy Foundry team manufacture and sell highly durable picnic settings, benches, litter receptacles, bike racks, drinking fountains, park shelters and customised solutions. Their Shepparton operations have grown to include 5 distinct production centres including cast aluminium, steel and stainlesssteel fabrication, timber production and product coatings. Putting Shepparton on the map for 157 years SYMBOLIC of Shepparton, the Furphy brand epitomises Australian made. J. Furphy & Sons has played a significant part in shaping our town’s history. Throughout the decades, thousands of this region’s inhabitants have been engaged by or been impacted by its continuum. J Furphy & Sons is an engineering and manufacturing business established in 1864 and is based right here in Shepparton. The J Furphy & Sons team specialise in stainless steel tank and vessel design, manufacturing, inspection and repair services and maintenance with customers spread right across Australia. J Furphy & Sons are also our nation’s only manufacturer of laser welded pillowplate heat exchangers. THIS situation and others in food supplies and other essentials made it abundantly clear that Australia had let the ball drop in our manufacturing capacity and self-reliance. The rebound has seen Australian companies take up the challenge and forge ahead in rebuilding our manufacturing capability. It now needs the Australian public to continue that support, to buy Australian Made to ensure the shortages we experienced last year are lessened the next time a pandemic takes hold. Made in Australia is an ambiguous term however. Many people shop and look for that label to indicate that the money they are spending is going towards local suppliers so the local economy grows, jobs are created here and we all reap the benefits those things bring. But the rules around what gets the “Made in Australia” label allow quite a bit of wiggle room. The sole criterion for making a ‘Made in Australia’ claim is that the good must have undergone its last substantial transformation in Australia. Somethings will always be imported, due to scale and the availability of basic technology or resources, but we are capable people. The challenge we face is to bring many of the jobs that have moved off shore due to cheap labour costs back and reinvigorate ‘Australian Made’. We have become a large exporter of raw materials and perhaps have lost sight of the potential for value adding here through our own manufacturing capabilities. Governments will need to invest more in Australian manufacture if we are not to experience the same pain we felt last year, and the general public will need to look more to buying Australian made in support.

COMMITTED TO SUPPORTING AUSTRALIAN MANUFACTURING... Dahlsens Shepparton, supporting local jobs. Photo: Steve Hutcheson

YOU might be pleased to know that most building materials used in Australian construction are made right here in Australia. Dahlsens, one of Australia’s largest truss and frame manufacturers and building material suppliers, is com mit ted to supporting Australian manufacturing, and local jobs, through its network of largely regional locations across Victoria and New South Wales – including its prefabricated manufacturing plant in Shepparton. As a business, Dahlsens has deep roots in regional communities with its own story starting 140 years ago in Bairnsdale, East Gippsland. Now fifth generation family owned, Dahlsens remains focused on supporting the communities in which it operates – with the family continually reinvesting in the business each year to ensure jobs remain local. Da h ls en s Sheppa r ton , wh ich h as operated since 2006 after taking the reins from former long-standing business SpanTruss, was recently awarded the Manufacturing Plant of the Year 2020

by the Dahlsens family and management team. At their Drummond Road workshop, a team of 40 plus hardworking employees work shifts every weekday from 5am to 9:30pm, manufacturing pre-fabricated wall frames, roof trusses and floor joists. Their innovative framing solutions are trusted by builders across the region, enabling an efficient build time and speeding up the all-important lock-up phase in the home building process. Truss and frame from Dahlsens is made from largely Australian grown and locally processed timber. When it's made and supplied locally, you're supporting the local economy and employment, and reducing the strains of such global shipping challenges as those we're encountering mid-pandemic. Along with prefabricated framing, Dahlsens also supplies the Shepparton region with whole-of-house building solutions from its Echuca trade store. The bulk of these building materials are also Australian made, and available for delivery direct to your building site.
